Sk in ca ncer is one of t he most common forms of cancer with more than 3.5 million cases diagnosed each year, according to the Skin Cancer Foundation. Fortunately, it’s also one of the easiest to cure if diagnosed and treated early. That’s why it’s so important to know what’s normal for your skin, and to know the ABCDEs of melanoma: • Asy mmet r y. If you draw a line through the mole, the halves don’t match. • Borders. The edges of the mole are uneven. • Color. The mole is different shades of brown, tan or black, or even red or blue. • Diameter. The mole is larger than a quarter inch. • Evolving. Any change in size, shape or color is a warning sign. A physician on staff at Community Hospital in Munster will provide free skin checks to look for indications of cancer or pre-cancerous conditions. Areas on the skin to be included in the screening exam are warts, birthmarks, moles, suspicious spots or growths, or areas that have had excessive exposure to the sun. The Heating & Appliance Repair Man. #1 Priority is servicing your A/C, Refrig., Washer, Dryer, Stove. Free Free Free service charge with same day repair, or $25 trip charge. Call Al. 708-9851623

Have you heard of Fenn’s Treasure? A few years ago Forest Fenn, now aged 84, placed somewhere in America’s great outdoors a small chest filled with gold coins and nuggets. He published a poem filled with clues, and for the past several years thousands of hikers and campers have been searching for his treasure. Now this summer I was exploring the Boundary Waters with my seventeen year old son. The Boundary Waters is a network of lakes that traverse the Superior National Forest in Minnesota and Quetico Provential Park in Ontario. On our first day we canoed past a bald eagle, eating a fish on a rock. On our last morning we witnessed a moose, with her calf in tow, swimming past our campsite. We also thought we spotted some gold. That day we had portaged and canoed into an especially remote lake. In the center of the lake was a very large solitary rock and at it’s water’s edge was a flash of copper colored stone. It was like a vein in the rock, yet far too straight and perfect to seem natural. It was a mystery. And then, as we canoed on, looking down into the clear water, we thought we saw the glint of gold nuggets. For a minute we were thinking of Fenn’s Treasure. Parts of his poem fit our location: “Begin it where warm waters halt . . . Not far, but too far to walk,”
and “If you’ve been wise and found the blaze, Look quickly down, your quest to cease.” Of course, it couldn’t possibly have been Fenn’s gold; Mr. Fenn’s treasure is hid somewhere near the Rockies. Alas, our gold was likely mineral deposits catching the sun. And yet, in fact, we were on a treasure hunt. The real treasure wasn’t glimmering gold; it was creation itself: trees and sky; clear water and wild nature. They are the real poetry filled with clues. The psalmist said, “The heavens declare the glory of God.” And here is a quest worthy of our souls. The prophet Jeremiah wrote, “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart . . . declares the Lord.” Yes, there is a part of us that longs for hidden treasure. We wish we were the ones, in the news last month, finding 300 year old Spanish gold on a shallow coral reef in Florida. So pay attention when Jesus says, “The kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field.” Indeed, we are made for seeking and finding. It’s built into our DNA. We are born explorers. “S e e k f i r s t h i s k i n g d om a nd h i s righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

GOD WITH US
Knowing God Through Fellowship ANNA M. CAISON What is fellowship, and how does one have fellowship with God? W hat does fellowship look like among Christians? Fellowship is a deep, intimate sharing of one another’s life. For the Christian it is sharing in God’s life as He has shared in our life through Christ. And it is through personal fellowship with God that we enter into corporate fellowship w ith other believers. Our fellowship with one another is seen when we emulate God’s personal fellowship with us. Often times we mistake “socializing” for fellowship. Socializing is a coming together under the guise of getting to know one another where the conversation centers on job tit les, marita l status, where one lives, how many children/ grandchildren one has, hobbies, sports, e t c . Su p e r f ic i a l r e l a t ion s h i p s a r e then formed based on these external similarities. Biblical Fellowship is deeper, much deeper---it looks beyond the external and sees the true person, a son (daughter) of God. Regardless of our inconsistencies, differences, faults and shortcomings, we see and relate to one another as God’s child, our brother (sister) whom Christ died for. As we continue to grow in grace
and in an experientia l k nowledge of Christ, our fellowship with the Father and His Son will be seen and felt in our fellowship with one another. We will be able to share in each other’s struggles, successes, pa in, g rief, a nd v ictories because of our connectedness to one a not her by God’s Spirit. It becomes impossible to offend a brother or sister and not feel the pain we’ve caused them, and the conviction that we need to make a mends. A s we lov ing ly ex hor t a nd admonish one another we become like “iron sharpening iron.” We will live out our calling as “Royal Priests” interceding for one another in prayer and having discernment of a need or situation in a member’s life without prior knowledge or conversation with the individual. It was the fellowship of the early church that caught the world’s attention draw ing hundreds and thousands of people to Jesus that resulted in changed lives that changed the culture they lived in. Are you walking in fellowship with God? For questions and/or comments, send an email to acaison@sbcglobal.net . Or you can write me at: Anna Caison, P.O. Box 529, Lansing, IL 60438.

Hammer toes are actually a curling of the toes. Sometimes these are flexible and can be straightened with manipulation, or fixed which means they are always curled with arthritic changes that don’t allow straightening. Many times corns are found on the tops of these toes. Surgery can be performed to straighten these toes or occasional trimming of the corns can alleviate some of the pain. If you have any questions concerning hammer toes or any other problems, please stop by or call my office during office hours.

Thornton Township High School District 205 Update
page
8
Dear Residents and Friends,
One of the commitments the Thornton Township High School District 205 Board of Education agreed on, was to create the best high schools in the state that exhibit an ongoing culture of excellence for each and every student entering District 205. As the third of a four part series outlining the Long-Term Visionary goals, we would like to highlight dedicated teachers bringing the Pharmacy Tech and other medical related programs to District 205. In 2008, district science teachers led by Calvin Stark, Brenda Wilson, Joyce Scaletta, Andy Chidester and area instructional leader Cindy Morris, designed, created, and implemented a program for students leading to careers in pharmacy and the medical field. This teacher led initiative has graduated over 180 students into career paths that the Department of Labor statistics gives an average salary of almost $120,000 annually for Pharmacists and over $280,000 for Physicians. District 205 teachers were empowered to develop this program, supported by administrators and the Board of Education in establishing partnerships with University of Illinois, University of Chicago, Chicago State University, and South Suburban College concentrating in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) advanced enrichment courses and programs. Developing a collaborative atmosphere among teachers, develops proficiency among students in the STEM areas, and produces students like Betty Allen. Betty, a 2008 graduate of Thornton High School, attended University of Chicago, graduating with her Bachelor of Science, and completed medical school at the University of Illinois. Betty is currently completing her cardiothoracic surgeon residency back in her home town at Ingalls Hospital in Harvey. What an amazing story! These amazing stories are the reasons this Board has set such high goals in recruiting, retaining, and training high quality teachers and staff that care about and support scores of students like Betty Allen. Preparing and equipping our students to reach their dreams and aspirations is our goal. District 205 students participating in the Pharmacy Tech program are pictured with teachers Mrs. Bernadette Lawrence Brenda Wilson and Andy Chidester (front). Back row includes Thornton Principal Tony Ratliff, President, District 205 Board of Education and teachers Joyce Scarletta and William Lawrence. became my studio space and taught me t he abi l it y to use pa i nt i ng to re-contextualize existing structures. The unexpected beauty and intention of murals have the power to change the perception of ignored neighborhoods and spaces. My work is an abstraction of traditional Graffiti letter-forms that create organic shapes and line work that integrate with preexisting lines of buildings or surfaces. Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: What should I do if I get a very good or full price offer within a few days after I put my home up for sale? Also, Should I try to sell my house at a high price just to “test the waters” and see if I can get it? Answer: Be thankful you just got a full price offer! Most of the time, no one gets an offer that soon, much less a full price offer. Any time you sell real estate and get such a good response, you’re tempted to think that your house is underpriced. This is usually not the case. More than likely, the buyer was already looking for a home like yours, so when it became available, they jumped on it. I am aware of situations where the seller refused such a quick offer, because they thought they must have priced the home too low. In those instances, they waited months before receiv ing another offer. Many

A definition: Fly dumping - the dumping of any wa ste mater ia l on publ ic or pr ivate property without a permit. The Kankakee River starts near South Bend Indiana and flows West into Illinois, about 60 miles south of Chicago. This area has a rich history however, even with heightened awareness of the importance of clean water and air, the Kankakee River is still threatened by greed and neglect. In the past, the Kankakee River area was so rich in natural resources that people could not fathom how the buffalo, deer, beaver, muskrat and other fur bearing animals could ever be diminished. The Kankakee was also home to migratory birds including ducks, pheasant, and ge ese t hat have be en desc r ibed a s ‘turning the sky black with their numbers.’ T he Potawatom i Ind ia ns were ea rly inhabitants of what became known as the ‘Grand Marsh.’ Back in t he ea rly 1900’s t he State of Indiana decided that the Kankakee R iver was a big nu isa nce. T he r iver f lowed through a vast marshland that people in power looked at with distain. The swamp had no value in their eyes. It didn’t matter that the marshland gave u nbel ievable resou rces to a my r iad of living creatures – man included. For centuries the Kankakee marshland gave abundant natural resources, but would soon be raped and pillaged in the name of progress. Underneath the slow moving water wa s black d i r t t hat had been undisturbed for centuries. This black soil was perfect for agriculture. Inf luential landowners persuaded Indiana politicians that the best use of the land was to grow corn, soybea ns, wheat a nd hay. This required the marsh to be drained - and so it began. The State of Indiana began cutting channels into the Kankakee River and draining the water. Indiana sold the soul of the Kankakee marsh. The drainage was not enough to satisfy the thirst for crops. The river was not only drained, but Indiana began to turn the curving and winding Kankakee River into one long, straight channel for miles and miles. Now crops could be planted right up to the channel - and every last square foot of land utilized in the name of progress – and profit. By 1923, the Kankakee River was 2-bdr m. apar tment o n Chicago Road in Dolton. In c l u d e s g a s , w a t e r & appliances. Tenant pays electric. 708-730-1428 or 708-206-1939 Calumet City unfurnished Apt: 2 bdrm. & 1 bath, appliances, laundry facility, no pets, $600/mo. + $600 security. 708-589-5720
an unrecognizable ditch. Gone were the curves and oxbows of a healthy river. Gone were the marshlands that served as home to wildlife and migratory birds. Since rivers do not recognize state lines, the Kankakee begins in Indiana but continues to flow into Illinois. If you look at Google maps and view the river east of Momence, you will clearly see the difference between the Indiana side of the river - and the Illinois side. In Illinois the river curves and bends like a healthy river should, while in Indiana the channel is as straight as when it was dug back in 1923. Man had tamed and trampled on the Grand Marsh with disastrous results. One of the biggest problems is one we cannot see. The Illinois side of the river looks healthy, but it is not. Due to the channelization of the river in Indiana, t here are tons of sand and sediment that are washed down the river channel from Indiana to Illinois every year. This sediment from Indiana has destroyed f ishing habitats, increased f looding, and is choking the Illinois portion of the Kankakee River. This fly dumping started a lmost a centur y ago a nd cont inues today. Even today Indiana dredges their portion of the river to remove the build up of sediment – and continues to call it improvements, just like they did 100 years ago. We can’t change the past, but Indiana is now doubling down on pouring silt and sediment into the Illinois portion of the Kankakee. There are plans to create a huge gravel quarry upstream of the Kankakee. This quarry has permits to pump millions of ga l lons of water ever y day into a tributary of the Kankakee River. Now I’m assuming that since this water will be coming out of a rock quarry, this water will contain, silt, sediment and solid particles – just what the Kankakee River does not need. We don’t need every last bushel of corn and beans, and we don’t need every last truckload of gravel – especially when it will cost us a river in exchange. The Kankakee River was created by an ‘Act of God’ - but it sure seems like Indiana is trying to wipe it off the map. Arlo Kallemeyn Shopper Publisher and big fan of leaving rivers to do what they do best.

Residents Enjoy Food & Festivities at Taste of Thornton Township Families and friends gathered together for a festive end of summer celebration at the annual Taste of Thornton Township last week. Presented by the township’s Human Relations Commission, the event offers a variety of food, and free entertainment and activities for all ages and showcases local restaurants and vendors. This year’s event was headlined by Harold Melvins Blue Notes. In addition to the food and music there were clowns, games and breakfast with super heroes and princesses. The children enjoyed free rides and face painting and visited with their favorite cartoon characters. The Thornton Township Youth Mexican Dance Group, Past Life Band, Chicago Boyz Acrobats, Michael Jackson impersonator Rico were among those also performing at this year’s event. The annual event is always a favorite with residents of all ages, vendors and the entertainers. “I really enjoy the great food, entertainment, children’s activities and the whole atmosphere of the event,” said Adrianna Bell, owner of Bracelet Hut in Oak Park. South Holland resident Karen McClinton, owner of Kozy Korner Katering has been participating in the event for several years. Her specialty is gourmet turkey hoagies with a twist. “I just love serving the nice, friendly people who come out every year,” she said. Past Life Band has been a fan favorite for years at the taste. Leader George Garcia said he loves performing for the crowd. “They generate such positive energy,” he said. The band has been together for 10 years and plays an assortment of R&B, Neo-Soul, and Latin. “We never do the same show twice. We always like to bring something a little different. The reception we receive from the township is incredible. It inspires us to play even better.” “This is a wonderful event for families. There is always great food, entertainment and activities for the children,” said Hazel Crest resident Yvonne Roberts who has been attending with her family for the past five years. Leland Sharkey of Calumet City agrees. He enjoys the entertainment and the great food, especially the ribs. “I rode by one year not knowing what it was and then read about it in the township newsletter and decided to check it out. I’ve been attending ever since,” he said. Thornton Township Supervisor Frank Zuccarelli told those in attendance that it is important to come out and make new friends and get to know each other. The familyfriendly event is designed to bring the community together emphasizing its importance in celebrating diversity. Turning to a more somber events – the church shooting in Charleston and recent shootings involving police and African American youth, Supervisor Zuccarelli said that rather than lashing out through violence it is time to show forgiveness and vow to work together to bring about unity. “We must turn the other cheek as did the members of Emanuel African Methodist Church and the City of Charleston,” he said. The township has decided to nominate the church and the City of Charleston for the Nobel Peace Prize. The
supervisor is asking township residents to visit http://www. nobelpeaceprizeforcharleston.com, read his letter and sign and share the petition for nomination with others. If awarded he is asking that the prize money be split between both and be used to work toward bringing unity in the area. Celebrating diversity and bringing people of various backgrounds toget her has a lways been importa nt to Supervisor Zuccarelli and events such as Taste of Thornton Township help to promote a spirit of unity throughout the south suburban area. Red Cross Offers Back to School Safety Tips Kids are heading back to school and the American Red Cross would like to remind parents of some simple measures they can take to keep children safe this fall on the bus, on a bike, or in a car. “Small details make a big difference, we want parents to be aware that talking to their kids can make a huge difference,” said Martha Carlos, Chief Communications Officer, American Red Cross of Chicago & Northern Illinois. “Now is an important time to refresh and go over some of the safety basics with your kids to make sure they have a fun, safe, first day of school.” Here are some safety tips from when traveling between school and home: Bus Safety · Plan to be at the bus stop early. · Stand away from the curb while waiting for the bus; line up facing the bus, not alongside it. · Board the bus only after it has come to a complete stop · Stay in clear view of the bus driver; never walk behind the bus and never play in the street. · Never reach under the school bus to get anything that has rolled or fallen beneath it. · After getting off the bus, move immediately onto the sidewalk and out of traffic. · Walk at least 10 steps away from the front of the bus so the driver can see you. · Wait for a signal from the bus driver before crossing the Like new an Apple Pink iPod touch 32GB. Always wear a helmet. · Have reflective gear on the bicycle and, if possible, wear reflective colors and material to be more visible. · Obey all traffic signs. · Ride on the right in the same direction as traffic. · Avoid loose clothing that could get caught in spokes or pedals or restrict movement. · Walk your bicycle across all intersections.
Disasters and emergencies can happen at any time. It’s important to be prepared in case one occurs while your child is in school. · When the new school year begins, talk to your child’s teacher about the school’s emergency plan. · Remind your child that the most important thing they can do if an emergency happens at school is to stay calm and listen to the direction of their teachers or principal. · Tape a copy of your family’s contact numbers and meeting place(s) to the inside of your child’s binder or homework notebook and in their book bag.
If your teenager drives to school, give them these tips. · Make sure you know what route they are taking to get to school; allow plenty of time so they won’t rush. · Remind them to watch for children and to be careful around school buses. · Wear a seatbelt and no phone while driving. More Tips for Parents · Talk with your children about safety before school starts. · Make sure your child knows his/her home phone number and address. · Visit your child’s bus stop before school starts to show him or her where to stand while waiting. · Teach your children not to talk to strangers or accept rides from someone they don’t know. · When walking your child to school, cross the street only at intersections and use a route along which the school has

BOB KRYGSHELD Labor Day is a celebration of t he men and women who roll up their sleeves and go to work each day. If you’re in the workforce yourself, you can appreciate this recognition of your efforts. As an investor, you can employ these attributes of the American worker: • Organization – Productive workers organize their time and efforts to maximize their productivity. W hen you invest, organization is also important. You might have trouble gaining traction toward your goals, such as a comfortable retirement, if you ow n a bunch of sc at tere d i nve st ment s that aren’t really working toget her to help you . Instead, t r y to bui ld a portfolio in which all your investments combine to provide the opportunities for growth and income you need to help reach your objectives. • Persevera nce – A s w or ker s, a l l of u s go through difficult times, but w e p er s e v er e. A s a n i nv e s t or, y ou w i l l e x p e r ie n c e bu m p s i n the road, in the form of market downturns. Yet, if you avoid making hasty a nd i l l-adv ised moves in response to potential short-term volatility, you can maintain your focus on your long-term needs and goals – and, as a result, you can help improve your chances of meeting those needs and attaining those goals. • Vision – Workers put in their time, year after year, because they have a v i sion of w hat t hey hope t heir ef for ts w i l l yield – a rewarding career and sufficient financial resources for t heir fa mi ly. what you hope to achieve. Be specif ic about what you want. Instead of ‘I’d like to retire comfortably someday,’ pi n you rsel f dow n a s to w hat t h i s really means. At what age? Travel the world or stay close to home to pursue your hobbies? How much money will you need to make these wishes come t r ue ? W here w i l l t h i s money come f rom? By answering these and other questions, you can define a vision for your financial f ut u re, lead i ng you to the next step – creating a strategy to help turn this vision into reality. • Diversity – The A mer ica n work force benef its f rom d raw i ng on the experiences and viewpoints of people from all different backgrounds. W hen you i nvest, you should also seek diversity. If you only owned one type of investment vehicle, such as growth stocks, and the market hit a downturn, y ou r p or t f ol i o w ou l d likely take a big hit. It’s a given that the va lue of investments will fluctuate, which means, under some circumstances, you could lose some or all of your principal. But if you spread your dollars among a range of vehicles – including stocks, bonds, government securities, CDs, and real estate – you can reduce the impact of volatilit y on your holdings. (Keep i n m i nd, t houg h, t hat diversification, by itself, does not guarantee a profit or protect against loss.) Labor Day will come and go quick ly. But by emu lat ing some of t he ch a r ac ter i st ic s of t he American workforce, you c a n c ont i nue m a k i ng progress toward your goals – without even having to work overtime.

Maybe I Should Run For Governor
WOODROW WILCOX On August 20, 2015, I helped a senior citizen cl ient f rom H ig h la nd, Indiana. It was another case of medica l billing fraud. First, I wrote a letter citing the documentation that the bill was already p a i d b y o u r c l i e n t ’s insurance company and told the medical service prov ider and its billing firm to stop bothering our client about a bill that was a lready pa id. I scolded them for sending a bill to our client after they had received payments from the insurance company months earlier. This billing of a senior citizen for a balance that was paid months earlier by the senior’s insurance compa ny is a g row i ng problem of medical billing fraud. It is a scheme to “s h a ke dow n” s en ior s for money t hat is NOT owed. Our client agreed w it h me t hat we cou ld do somet h i ng to help catch t he def rauders and protect other senior citizens. I typed and the client signed a letter of compla int to t he f raud i nvest igat ion u n it of Medicare.

W h i le helpi n g t h i s senior citizen, I got the idea that maybe I should r u n for gover nor. A s a ca ndidate, I cou ld ta lk about issues that affect senior citizens more freely. I could describe proposals to help protect both senior citizens and others from med ic a l bi l l i ng f r aud. Stopping just that would save Indiana citizens and gover n ment m i l l ions of dollars per year. I can m a ke ot her propos a l s to improve t he lives of Indiana citizens, too. Who knows? Maybe I could win. If not, maybe my ideas wou ld be adopted by a st ronger candidate who really cares about Ind ia na’s sen ior citizens. If that happens, I will feel like a winner. Note : Woodrow Wi lcox is the senior medical bill c a se worker at Sen ior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of t hat i nsu ra nce agenc y over one million dollars by correcting medical bill mistakes in the Medicare system. He wrote the book S O LV I N G M E D I C A R E PROBLEM$.

CALUMET MEMORIAL PARK DISTRICT HOSTS CALUMET CITY CHAMBER: Chamber members took a few swings in the batting cages and did a few rounds of miniature golf despite the cool, windy temperatures Wednesday August 26th, 2015, during the organization’s August Membership Meeting. Undaunted by the weather, members, guests and CMPD staff enjoyed the freshly grilled burgers and hot dogs provided by the park district. Eric Schneider, 1st Ward Alderman and CMPD Park District Representative, gave the assembled guests an overview of park district ongoing, locations, programs and events. The district takes in all of Calumet City, Burnham, and parts of Dolton and South Holland. One of their most popular locations is the Sandridge Fitness Center immediately behind Dirksen School, off Michigan City Road, which offers classes and programs for residents of all ages. A perk of Chamber membership includes use of park facilities at Sandridge for Chamber member employees. Pictured here are Gene Popa of CMPD and Chamber Member and Car Show Chairman Andy DeYoung discussing the upcoming Saturday September 19th, 2015 car show. *** ST JOHN’S WOMEN’S CLUB SEEKS UNWANTED TREASURES: For their Annual Rummage sale, set for September 10, 11, and 12. conversation sprinkled with stories and remembrances. Both Bud and Patty (she is the former Village Clerk and now a Trustee with Lansing) have roots that go back many years to that village. Both are former full time police officers (Patty was Lansing’s 1st full time woman police officer and paramedic and Bud is a retired Lansing Police officer and now still working part time in that capacity) and share their love of that charming village. Patty is also on the LACE board and active in many Lansing activities all year long. N 2 N would like to take this opportunity to thank Bud and Patty Eidam for their hospitality and kindness! ***

WEDDING GUESTS AT THE PEGGY NOTEBART MUSEUM: A gorgeous place for a wedding, the Peggy Notebart Museum featuring a butterfly aviary. The museum, across from the Lincoln Park Zoo is a romantic setting for a wedding. The accomodations include courtyards for the ceremony and both indoor and outdoor venues for guests to wander in between courses and toasts. Pictured here are wedding guests of the Hauptman/Montague nuptials in the aviary from left: Donny Spano, Victoria Hauptman, Glenn Triller and Spencer Minton Jr. The Peggy Notebart Museum is a wonderful place to visit and experience. Do try it soon! *** TIMOTHY TEGGE SHOW COMING TO ST. COLUMBA PARISH: “The Timothy Tegge Show: Clown Around” was such a hit last year, that Fr. Charles Watkins, pastor of St. Columba (Hegewisch) decided to invite them back as part of the annual fall events of raffles and entertainment for the longtime Chicago parish on the Southeast Side.
