NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet September 10 The Dynasty Banquet Hall, located at 4141 Calumet Avenue, Hammond, Indiana, is set to come a live on Saturday, September 10, 2016, from 12-3 PM, as t he Hammond branch of the NAACP hosts its annual Freedom Fund Banquet. The guest speaker will be Indiana State Senator Lonnie M. Randolph. Senator Randolph was first elected to the Indiana Senate Democratic Caucus in 1994. After the completion of his first term, he became a judge for the East Chicago City Court in 1998. Randolph was re-elected to serve the 2nd Senate District in November of 2008. Senator Randolph represents Senate District 2, which encompasses portions of Lake County. District 2 communities include East Chicago, Whiting, and portions of Gary, Griffith, Hammond, Hobart, and Merrillville. Senator Randolph advocates for legislation on behalf of all citizens of Lake County and Indiana, including women’s rights, union rights, job creation, and assistance for small businesses. Senator Randolph also extensively worked on health care legislation by examining HMO mental health policies at the Lilly Symposium. Senator Randolph graduated with a BS degree from Northern Illinois University and received his Law Degree from John Marshall Law School in Chicago. He serves on the Gary Chamber of Commerce and Lakeshore Chamber of Commerce. The Hammond NAACP Branch continues to work with every segment of the community to remove barriers for a better quality of life for all. Its success has continued because of existing partnerships with business, education, religious, civic, and community organizations. Music entertainment throughout this event will be rendered by local area singing sensation Ms. Rhoelle Blackmon and her trio. Tickets are $50.00 in advance and $60.00 at the door. Carts & Cocktails Honors Tony Tasset The Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park is once again hosting its premier annual fundraising event that offers an afternoon of fun, food, and fine art. Carts & Cocktails, an experience unparalleled in the Chicago region, will be held on September 10, from 2 – 5 p.m. on the patio and in E-Lounge at Governors State University, and will include cock ta i ls, hors d’oeuv res, sweets, and a park tour. This year’s event will be hosted by Marley Kayden of NBC5 Chicago and honors special guest Tony Tasset, the sculptor of Paul in the park collection. The Chicago Tribune’s Lori Waxman recent ly w rote, “Ta sset … is t he Midwest a r t world’s chief sat irist, a conceptual artist who lives to level hierarchies as much as he loves to enjoy their luster.” Paul accomplishes both goals. To purchase tickets for the event online, visit govst.edu/nmspdonation. For more i n for mat ion about sponsorship opportunities, purchasing seats, or the event in general, contact Gina Ragland at 708.235.7559.

In the spring of this year, Karen Pender, Administrator of Calvar y Academy, was looking into the possibility of rebranding the school. After attending a conference that spoke on the topic of the most efficient ways to market your school, Mrs. Pender returned with a renewed excitement for the school and all its possibilities. B e g i n n i n g i n J u l y o f t h i s y e a r, preparations began for a new website, logo and tagline. After weeks of research, pla nning a nd redesig ning of t he logo, C a l v a r y A c a d e m y ’s r e br a n d i n g w a s complete. The school feels the new logo better represents what Calvary Academy sta nds for: a qua l it y a nd fa it h-ba sed educat ion. T he book i n t he new logo symbolizes the challenging and high quality education Calvary is known for and the cross is placed in the center, supporting their uncompromising beliefs that Christ is the center of the education and student

life at Calvary Academy. After the new logo was finished, the tagline fell into place: Academ ic E xcel lence. Ch r ist-Centered Education. The teachers, staff and families are excited to see what God has in store for Calvary this school year. Many changes have taken place but one thing will remain the same: their mission to challenge students to know Christ as Lord, teaching them to know and apply biblical truth, and train them to pursue academic excellence in order that they may engage and transform their world for Jesus Christ. About Calvary Academy. Ca lva r y Academy opened it s door on September 8, 1970, a s a K-9t h g rade Christian school operating out of Calvary Reformed Church in South Holland. The founder was Rev. Ronald Brown, then the pastor of Calvary Reformed Church.

Make the Most of Gifts to Grandchildren BOB KRYGSHELD National Grandparents Day is less than a week away! W hile this “Day” is not as widely known as Mother’s or Father’s Day, it is nonetheless important, as it recognizes the key role t hat gra ndpa rents p l a y. I f y o u a r e a g r a ndpa rent you r sel f, you might expect some cards or phone calls or ema i ls f rom your ow n grandchildren – but you will probably experience even greater enjoyment in the gifts you can give them. If you’re thinking of making a financial gift, consider you r opt ions carefully. To begin with, don’t forget about your ow n needs. As much as you love your grandchildren, you can’t afford to provide significant financial gifts to them at the expense of your own retirement savings or the resources you might need for health care or long-term care. So, review your budget to determine what you can afford to give. This amount may change year by yea r, depending on your circumstances, so you may want to review gifts annually. However, a ssu m i ng you ca n a f ford to g ive reg u la rly to you r g ra ndchildren, how s hou ld y ou go a b out it? Here a re a few possibilities: • Establish a 529 plan. A college degree is a very good investment in your g ra ndch i ld ren’s f ut u re – but higher education comes with high costs. If you want to help your grandkids go to college, you could establish a 529 plan. Earnings in a 529 plan can grow federal taxfree and will not be taxed when the money is taken out to pay for college. Plus, you may receive state tax incentives if you invest in your home state’s 529 plan. (However, if withdrawals are not used for higher education expenses, the earnings portion is fully taxable and will incur a

W h i le a 529 pla n ow ned by a grandparents generally w on’t b e rep or te d a s an asset under the Free Application for Federal St udent A id ( FA F S A), w it hd r aw a l s u s e d for school w i l l be t reated a s st udent i ncome on t he next year’s FA FSA, and so could lower their financial aid package. So you could wait for your grandchild’s f ina l year of college, when he or she won’t be applying for future financial aid, before you a llow w it hdrawa ls from the 529 plan. (You may want to discuss a 529 plan’s potential financial aid impact with a financial aid professional.) • Contribute to a custodia l account. You can give money to your grandchildren through a custodial account, known as UGMA or UTMA. These are irrevocable gifts that minors gain control of at the age of majority. Be aware, t hen, t hat once they get the money, they can do w it h it as t hey choose, and their choices may be far different from what you had intended. • Pay college bills directly. You can simply write a check to the college to help pay for your grandchild’s expenses. B y m a k i n g a n y of these gifts, you can help your grandchildren move forward through life — a nd t heir jou r ney ca n provide you with the gifts of pride and joy. T here’s a not her i nterest i ng a nd profound aspect to God that is often overlooked. Luke 9:51-55 illustrates an example of this forgotten side of the Lord. Jesus is in route to Jerusalem where He will be arrested, tried, and crucified. His travel to Jerusalem will take Him through a Samaritan Village. He sends at least 2 of His disciples ahead of him to secure lodging for the night. However, the Samaritans refuse to service Jesus and His followers. (Jews and Samaritans sha red a hat red for each ot her t hat stemmed from a history of religious and cultural differences) In anger James and John suggest they call down fire from heaven and destroy the entire Samaritan village. Jesus rebukes them and reiterates His mission: “The Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives but to save them.” W hen our zeal in proclaiming and upholding the truth of God’s Word causes us to become bias and hateful (refusing medical treatment and other services) toward people who do not agree with our Christian beliefs, we have stepped outside of Christ’s command that His followers emulate His love for all of humanity (John

3:16-17; Gal. 6:10). As I’ve stated in previous articles, God allows us to choose whom we will follow. Christ, Buda, Muhammad, Self, etc., it’s our choice! Individuals who choose not to follow Christ, God doesn’t blast them off the face of the earth or sends a lightning bolt to strike them dead. He allows them all the days of their life on the earth the opportunity to learn of Him and come to Him. In fact, scripture says God patiently delays His return to judge the world and unrepentant humanity to give man ample time to change his heart and be saved (2 Peter 3:9). We join God in His desire toward lost humanity when we demonstrate His love through acts of kindness, respect, and service to people whose religious and cultural beliefs are different from ours. Who knows, our act of kindness and respect to one who does not share our beliefs, may be a leading factor in drawing him or her to faith in Christ. Back to School: Red Cross Shares Steps to Help Keep Kids Safe safely. Arrange for the kids to walk to school with a friend or classmate.

It’s time for the school bells to ring again and the American Red Cross has steps everyone can follow to help make the trip back to the classroom a safe one. “Safety should be the top priority for all students, especially younger children and those heading to school for the first time,” said Celena Roldán, Chief Executive Officer, American Red Cross of Chicago & Northern Illinois. “W hether riding, biking or walking to school, we want everyone to arrive and then return home safely.” SCHOOL BUS SAFETY If children ride a bus to school, they should plan to get to their bus stop early and stand back from the curb while waiting for the bus to arrive. Other safety steps include: · Wait to board the bus until it has come to a complete stop and the driver or attendant has signaled to get on. · Tell children they should only board their bus - never an alternate one. · Always stay in clear view of the bus driver and never walk behind the bus. · Cross the street at the corner, obey traffic signals and stay in the crosswalk. · Never dart out into the street, or cross between parked cars. GET TO SCHOOL SAFELY If children ride in a car to get to school, they should always wear a seat belt. · Younger children should use car seats or booster seats

until the lap-shoulder belt fits properly (typically for children ages 8-12 and over 4’9”) and ride in the back seat until they are at least 13 years old. · If a teenager is driving to school, parents should mandate that he or she use seat belts. Drivers should not use their cell phone to text or make calls, and should avoid eating or drinking while driving. · Some students ride their bike to school. They should always wear a helmet and ride on the right in the same direction as the traffic is going. · When students are walking to school, they should only cross the street at an intersection. If possible, use a route with crossing guards. · Parents should walk young children to school, along with children taking new routes or attending new schools, at least for the first week to ensure they know how to get there

WHAT DRIVERS SHOULD KNOW Drivers should know what the yellow and red bus signals mean and be aware that children are out walking or biking to school and slow down - especially in residential areas and school zones. Yellow flashing lights indicate the bus is getting ready to stop and motorists should slow down and be prepared to stop. Red flashing lights and an extended stop sign indicate the bus is stopped and children are getting on or off. Drivers in both directions must stop their vehicles and wait until the lights go off, the stop sign is back in place and the bus is moving before they can start driving again. Parents should also make sure the child knows their phone number, address, how to get in touch with their parents at work, how to get in touch with another trusted adult and how to dial 9-1-1. They should also teach children not to talk to strangers or accept rides from someone they don’t know. TAKE A FIRST AID CLASS Red Cross training can give someone the confidence and skills to help with everyday emergencies from paper cuts to school sports injuries. A variety of online and in-class courses are available at redcross.org/takeaclass. People can download the free Red Cross First Aid App (redcross. org/apps) for instant access to expert advice whenever and wherever needed. J.E.M. Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: My husband decided to sell our home after I spent a year moving my Mom next door. She is 85-years-old and needs to have someone looking out for her. He got mad at me and threatened divorce me if I didn’t sign papers to sell. So I did. Under duress. We received an offer and then we counter-offered. I again did not want to sign. But I did. The buyer accepted and had a home inspection. I refuse to sign the final sale. I was pushed into doing the signing not by my free will. I love my husband and I don’t want to be divorced. But I also have to care for my mother. What happens now with me not signing? Can we be sued or worse? Answer: The buyer has a contract to purchase the home. He or she expects to close within a given time. On the basis of the sale agreement the buyer may have undertaken significant moving expenses, sold a home and had other costs. So yes, if you do not go through with the transaction you can expect the buyer to seek damages and to even try and force the sale of the home. But whether the home sells or not, you and your husband need to work out the disputes which threaten your marriage. Also, before closing you need an attorney to review the contract concerns you face.

**************** Question: Is it the seller’s responsibility to pay the broker a commission if the seller decides at the last minute not to sell? Answer: When you enter into a listing agreement with a broker it is expected that the broker will have certain costs to promote the sale and a given time period to complete the transaction. By ending a listing early you limit the ability of the broker to sell the property and you may be sticking the broker with costs. In such circumstances, it’s often best to offer to compensate the broker for reasonable costs so that the matter can be settled in a way that works for everyone. Matters change if the broker has found a ready, willing and able buyer who meets all the terms and requirements of the listing agreement. At this point the broker has completed the assigned task and has good reason to seek a commission.
