The Historic Ford Ha nga r located at t he La nsing Municipal Airport has been a Chicago Southland staple for 89 years, yet so many locals have not had the chance to experience the history and beauty of a building that happens to be in their own backyard. On September 11th & 12th the Hangar will open its doors to Fetching Market for the second year and to the nearly 3,000 expected guests. “Our concept is simple. Quality, vintage, handcrafted, antique and unique finds that people love,” says Pamela Dennis, owner of Fetching Market. “Having the opportunity to bring vendors and guests together in such a unique and historic venue that happens to be in my hometown….that’s extremely rewarding!” The 50+ vendors spanning 5 states will be on hand with items such as barn finds, glassware, antique & vintage jewelry, collectibles, handmade accessories, artisan soaps, repurposed furniture, home décor, locally made gourmet delicacies and more. From the unique treasures to the local fare and live music, this is a fantastic event that is not only exceptionally enjoyable but also benefits the Ford Hangar Foundation. exploration of loss, family and the question of whether we can escape the past, The House of Mirrors and Hearts focuses on three complex but strong women and a young academic who inadvertently finds himself tangled in their story. This musical runs July 8-10, 15-17, 21-24, 2016. The final show of the 2016 season is the raucous comedy, Secrets of a Soccer Mom by Kathleen Clark. Three engaging women reluctantly take the field in a mothers vs. sons soccer game. They intend to let the children win, but as the game unfolds they become intent on scoring. The competition ignites a fierce desire to recapture their youthful good-humor, independence and sexiness, paving the way toward a better understanding of themselves, their families and changes they need to make in their lives. The performances are September 9-11, 16-18, 22-25, 2016. Don’t miss out on all four shows at the low price of only $55. That’s only $13.75 per ticket. This early bird price is only good until December 5th. So order your Season Tickets today. For more information on purchasing season tickets, please visit www.towletheater. org or call the box office at 219-9378780.

Hammer Toes Hammer toes are actually a curling of the toes. Sometimes these are flexible and can be straightened with manipulation, or fixed which means they are always curled with arthritic changes that don’t allow straightening. Many times corns are found on the tops of these toes. Surgery can be performed to straighten these toes or occasional trimming of the corns can alleviate some of the pain. If you have any questions concerning hammer toes or any other problems, please stop by or call my office during office hours.

Question: What do I do if my dog bites someone? Answer: It’s a timely question. The insurance industry reports that insurer’s costs tied to dog bites surged last year, with the average claim jumping 12 percent or more on medical fees, legal settlements and jury awards. Indiana Premiere at the Towle Theater Robi n Howdon’s Br it i sh Fa rce Perfect Wedding is under the direction of Mark Baer, who is returning after his successful Towle directorial debut of The Nightmare Room last year. A n appa lling situat ion; a bridegroom wa kes on his wedding morning in his own bridal suite, with his bride-to-be about to arrive any moment, and finds a strange girl in bed beside him. What’s more, an extremely attractive girl whom, in the depths of his post stag-night hangover, he can’t remotel y remember e ven hav i ng been introduced to. Worse - during the ensuing panic to get the stranger dressed and out of the way, the bride arrives and the girl is trapped in the bathroom. The only way out of the dilemma is to persuade the best man to pretend that the hidden girl is his girl friend. Then the problem is that the best man’s real girl friend has to be kept ignorant of the fact. By the time the bride’s parents and half the hotel staff get in on the act, the chaos reaches nuclear proportions! The Towle welcomes back Ian Rigg (Orland Park, IL) as the Groom to Be a nd Lauren K nutson (Chicago) as the maid. Audiences may remember Ian and Lauren from last summer’s production of From Up Here. The Towle is please to have newcomers Jerico Bleu (Chicago) as the Best Man, Stephanie Rohr (Chicago) as the Bride to Be, Rachel Silvert (Chicago) as the Woman

Thornton Township High School District 205 Update Dear Residents and Friends, This article concludes a four part series updating and outlining Thornton Township High School District 205 Board of Education’s Long-Term Visionary Goals. District 205 Board of Education is fully committed to create the best high schools in the state of Illinois. Last year, both Swayne Roland and Habibat Oguntade of Thornwood received the Gates Scholarship. District 205 students have shown leadership, community service and academic proficiency, which help our district a attract numerous student scholarships. Preventing Suicide: Reaching Out and Saving Lives September 7th-13th is National Suicide Prevention Week. On average, one American completes suicide ever y 12.8 minutes. In Indiana, more people die by suicide than homicide. The Indiana Youth Institute recently released alarming statistics about teen suicide in Indiana: 19% of Indiana teens reported they had considered suicide in the past year, with 11% reporting a suicide attempt. According to Dr. Melissa Butler, psychologist at the IU School of Medicine, “Teen suicide is the second leading cause of death and remains a serious health concern. Yet, suicidal teens often are not getting the specialized mental health services they need.” In addition to teens, ot her groups at higher risk for suicide are the elderly, young adults, veterans, and those struggling with mental illness or substance abuse. Dr. Yelena Chernyak, a psychologist at the IU School of Medicine notes that, “Individuals who are most vulnerable to suicide may experience mental, physical, or substance use disorders. Effective prevention efforts to decrease suicide risk include providing effective clinical care for their medical conditions as well as family and community support.” Most suicidal individuals do not want to die; they just want to end the pain. Suicidal crises tend to be brief, so early detection of suicidal behaviors can save lives. The following are warning signs of a possible suicide: • Suicidal ideation or plan. This includes threatening to hurt or kill oneself, talking or writing about it, or looking for ways (e.g. seeking firearms). • Hopelessness. Feelings of hopelessness about the future are more predictive than feelings of sadness or depression. • Recklessness. Engaging in risky activities, seemingly without thinking. • Withdrawal. Withdrawing from family, friends, and society. Sept. 10-12, 9-3 909 Park Ave., Thornton Large selection of tools, housewares, furniture & Christmas collectibles
• Increased alcohol or drug use. Individuals who abuse alcohol or drugs are at a much higher risk for suicide. • Changes in sleep pattern. Being unable to sleep or sleeping all the time. • Access to guns. Those with access to guns are more likely to complete suicide. If you suspect someone you know may be at risk for suicide: · Do not be afraid to ask. Talking about suicide does not increase the risk of suicide. · Offer your support and guidance. Listen but don’t judge. · Offer hope that alternatives are available and provide resources. For example, go with the individual to a physician or mental health professional, or provide them with a crisis line phone number. · Take action! Get help from an individual or agency who specializes in crisis intervention and suicide prevention. Individuals who have attempted suicide in the past are statistically more likely to make another attempt. Indiana psychologist Dr. Carrie Cadwell notes the following: “According to the Center for Disease Control, for every 1 completed suicide there are 25 attempts. So in the United States, in Indiana, there are many more individuals with the lived experience of surviving suicide. We must ensure that the mental health workforce is sufficiently trained to treat suicidality and support those who have attempted in their recovery journey.” The following resources are available for help: 1-800-273-TALK (8255) – National Crisis Line 1-888-628-9454 – National Crisis Line (Spanish Language) 1800-273-8255 – Veterans Crisis Line To f ind out more about t he Ind ia na Ps ycholog ic a l A s s oc iat ion, v i sit w w w. indianapsychology.org

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Quest ion : Ou r home ju st sold a nd yesterday the buyer’s home inspector was at our home for about an hour. We did not tell our buyer, but we had our home inspected before we put it on the market, and our inspector was here for over three hours. He took our furnace apart, and spent a good 20 minutes inspecting it. His comment to us was that our furnace was in great shape for being 12 years old. We do have it cleaned every year. The buyer’s inspector didn’t even open our furnace. I saw on his report that he marked “rust, poor condition.” How can we handle this if the buyers come back with concerns about the furnace? Answer: The fact that the furnace is cleaned every year does not mean it is without rust. The fact that a furnace has rust may or may not mean anything. S o s u r e, s how t he bu y er s y ou r inspection report if the furnace becomes
an issue. Additionally, I bet if asked your inspector would be delighted to write a strong letter regarding what he did to examine the furnace and his conclusions. A word of caut ion: If you have a heating and air conditioning company check the system, be sure they understand that any required work will be done with another company. There’s an unavoidable conflict-of-interest in any field when an inspector says a system needs repairs -and such repairs also produce business for the inspector. On August 28, 2015, I wrote a letter to a client to explain why she may have to pay for a chest x-ray that Medicare refused to cover. On that day, I received a phone ca l l f rom a billing person who told me that Medicare usually does NOT pay for a preoper at ion che st x-r ay. That is a n x-ray which our client’s doctor a nd hospital wanted done in order to make sure that the patient had a heart that was healthy enough to withstand the stress of an operation. Med ica re d id not cover the service. With the client in my office, I compared the bill with the Medicare Summar y Notice and what our client remembered about t he matter. A few “red flags” appeared. The medical billing person understood the “red flags” that I noted in a letter to the medical ser v ice prov ider. But, neither the doctor nor the hospit a l cou ld cha nge a polic y of t he federa l government to push some medical service costs onto senior citizens in order to save money for the federal government. What Are You Passionate About? ANNA M. CAISON I was recently asked, “What are you passionate about?” Given the gathering I was in, the question was unexpected and caught me by surprise. So I shared an old desire (recently re-kindled) for ministry to young moms. As I reflect on the answer I gave that evening, I wonder if my desired ministry reflects what I’m really passionate about. What am I passionate about? I have a passionate desire that every Christian comes into an experiential knowledge of Christ. I long for every believer who names the name of Jesus as their Savior a nd L ord to ex per ience a persona l relationship with Him. I yearn for every child of God to know Him beyond the stories they read in the Bible of Him (as a healer, provider, deliverer, comforter, etc.), to knowing Him as such in their own life. We, the visible church, have become so institutionalized that Christ is often viewed as living in heaven, far removed from the affairs of the church and the culture we live in. But the Lord is not far removed from us or the culture we live in. He is still the head of His church and He is alive and relevant to our modern day struggles and crisis. Through the Holy Spirit we can
experience His presence. We can know His love for us. We can receive healing, direction and peace. No matter what life throws at us we can receive His power to live an overcoming life of victory. Does my desire to provide ministry to single young mothers line up with what I’m passionate about? Yes! I’ve met so many young mothers who gave up their life, their dreams, scholarships and other opportunities for what they thought was true love only to end up raising a child alone. They become hopeless, some end up homeless and/or being abused by their partners. Giving these mothers the opportunity to learn of Jesus’ love for t hem and to experience His love and forgiveness through His people is what’s needed to turn their life around. If they would take hold of Him and begin to see themselves through His eyes they too will experience His power that will enable them to make better life choices for themselves and their babies, breaking the cycle of abuse and hopelessness in the next generation. For questions and/or comments send an email to acaison@sbcglobal.net . Or you can write me at: Anna Caison, P.O. Box 529, Lansing, IL 60438.

Not many of their cla ssmates ag ree w it h their love of reading and are not excited about the choices or spending their summer reading books. One of the books is To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, a favorite of Lucy’s. It was also the book their former teacher, Fat Bob, would have assigned for summer reading had he not passed away. Knowing how much Fat Bob revered t he book, t he t r io a re d isappoi nted to f i nd that their classmates are grumbling about the title. W h i le browsi ng a book store i n t he loca l mall, an idea was born. The manager mentioned how importa nt it is for book s to be shelved correctly because ot her w ise customers would believe the store had run out. The three decided that one way for t heir classmates to get excited about To K i l l a Mockingbird would be to make them believe that they were banned from stores a nd d i f f ic u lt to find. Thus the “I Kill the Mockingbird” movement was created.

All activities were supervised by Patti and staff so moms and dads were able to take the time to get to meet the staff and ask questions about classes and special events. Owner Patti Komara said, “It was great to see such a turn out. I think the parents had just as much fun as the kids. You should have seen Spidey dancing with Elmo. That was funny!” Pat t i’s A l l-A mer ica n celebrates their 46th business anniversary this year. Patti’s All-American grew from a few classes in 1969 to 1300 students in gymnastics, dance, swim, Ninja Zone, and educational preschool. Best Response to Volatile Markets? Stay Calm BOB KRYGSHELD Recently, stocks have fallen sharply from their record highs, with one-day drops that can rightfully be called “dizzying.” As an investor, what are you to make of this volatility? Most ex per t s cite global fears about China’s econom ic slowdow n, f a l l i ng oi l pr ic e s a nd a nticipation of a move by the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates as the key factors behind t he stock market’s decline. On the other hand, the U.S. economy is still doing fairly well. Employers are adding jobs at a prett y good clip, wages are rising, home prices are up and overall economic growth has been reasonably solid. In other words, we are in a vastly better place than in the period before the Great Recession of 2008 and early 2009, when the financial markets bottomed out. Nonetheless, it’s only natura l that you might feel some trepidation over what’s been happening in the financial markets over the past few weeks. So, what should you do? Here are a few suggestions: • Expect more of the same. Be prepa red for more v ol a t i l i t y, p ot e nt i a l l y including big drops one day followed by big gains the next. Until the factors considered responsible for the current volatility have been fully absorbed i n t o t h e m a r k e t ’s pr ici ng mecha n isms, big pr ic e s w i ngs, one way or another, are to be expected. • Don’t panic. Volatility is nothing new, and the financial markets are more resilient t han you may think. • Look for opportunities. By definition, a downturn occu rs when i nvestors sell massive amounts of stocks, but it actually may be a good time to buy them, while their price is down. Look at the most s uc c e s s f u l bu si ne s s e s and their products and ser v ices. If you ca n envision these companies st i l l being a round a nd
thriving in ten years, why wouldn’t you want to buy their stocks at potentially lower prices? • Diversif y. During t he dow nt u r n, ju s t a b out everyone’s portfolio was a f fec ted. But i f you r s took a particularly large hit, it might be because your holdings are overconcentrated in stocks, especia lly t he t y pes of stocks that fared the worst. You may need to further diversif y your portfolio t h roug h a m i x t u re of domestic and international stocks, bonds, government secu r it ies, rea l estate, cer t i f icates of deposit (CDs) and other vehicles. Diversification, by itself, can’t guarantee a profit or prevent against all losses, but it c a n help blu nt t he ha rshest ef fects of volatility. • Review your investment st r ate g y. Re v ie w you r st rateg y at lea st once a y e a r, p o s s i b l y i n consu ltat ion w it h a f i na ncia l professiona l. You may need to ma ke smaller-scale adjustments in response to changes in the economy, interest r ate s, a nd so on, but don’t a b a ndon y ou r core principles, such as maintaining a portfolio that ref lects your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon. Investing w ill never b e eit her r i s k-f re e or predictable. But by taking the steps described above, you can relieve some of the stress associated with volatility and help yourself stay on track toward your financial objectives. Past performance does not guarantee future results. Investors should understand the risks involved of owning invest ments, including interest rate risk, credit risk and market risk. The value of investments f luctuates and investors can lose some or all of their principal. Special risks are inherent to international investing, in clu ding th os e rel at e d to currenc y f luctuations and foreign political and economic events.

Ma ny of t he people who list their homes with me already experienced failure with a prior broker. They often tell me that they were frustrated with the “lack of selling” they witnessed with the agents who showed their homes. “The agents who show the home just walk through and hardly say anything about t he house. W hy aren’t they pushing the sale? Don’t they want to make a sale?” Sel lers f irst need to understand the process t hat a 2015 buyer goes through in the selection of a home. They don’t want to be “sold”. This is not a home-o-matic that comes w it h f ree stea k k nives, if you act now. This is a six-figure decision in an unreliable economy that w ill house their family. Homeowners that follow them around peppering them with data about the storage under the stairs, a n a necdote about t he wall oven and dozens of other well meaning tidbits are viewed as a distraction and nuisance. Buyer agents are not ta l kat ive because t hey know their buyer clients. T hey k now t he buyers are studying it. They are soaking it in. They are seeing if it fits them. They are accessing how they look in it and that’s hard to do with someone in your space the whole time. If it feels like home, they’ll gladly take the data sheet

ARLO KALLEMEYN I read an article this week that wood does not decay under water. The decay of wood is caused by microorganisms, such as fungi and bacteria. When wood is submerged under water, it is not ex posed to oxygen, one of the elements needed by microorganisms to survive. Venice Italy is known as the ‘Floating City’. The wooden foundation of Venice are centuries old and are still doing a fine job of supporting the beautiful buildings above the waterline. In addition, the constant f low of salt water around and through the wood petrifies the wood over time, turning the wood into a hardened stone-like structure. This fact about wood underwater ma kes it diff icult to remove tree stumps and fallen trees out of rivers and lakes. One person was asking about removing tree stumps at the bottom of the la ke where he had bought property. Some of the stumps were a ha za rd to boats. He was wondering if this was a do-it-yourself project. Here is a response from a helpful gentleman comparing the simple method to the do-it-yourself method. As in many do-it-yourself projects the wife comes to the rescue. Simple Method – 3 steps 1. Call two or three companies on the lake who dredge or sink posts for docks, get competitive bids, select contractor and schedule day. 2. Meet said contractor at the lake, watch them start on the stumps, start a little bonfire, drink a cup of coffee. 3. 4 hours later, write a check and thank them for their service. Time spent: Selecting Contractor: 2 hours “Super v ising” Stump Remova l: 4 hours Earning that amount of money at regular job: 40 hours Do It Yourself Method – 35 steps 1. Sea rch Google for under water stump removal methods. Get offtopic and veer into decompositions durations for various tree varieties in different climates within the world at different times in the evolution of the planet. Try to unearth how long and why some trees become petrified. 2. Post message on the internet to find
what others have done. 3. Review initial responses to post. Hmmm. “I better grab a cold one from the fridge before I go on.” Arrgghhh. Out of beer. Run to the store. Discover all the space in the fridge is taken up. Go to garage to hook up auxiliary fridge. No outlet. Rewire the garage w ith an outlet where I’ve got the fridge. While putting the cover on the new outlet, discover an existing outlet right next to it – right behind the water skis stacked up in the corner. 4. Search Google. Dynamite. Plastic explosives. Dar win awards. There goes another evening. 5. Talk up the ideas with friends and family. See if they’ve got any great insight. 6. Acknowledge your brother-in-law’s idea to use a chain between each stump and a tractor. Quietly note to him that the tractor he calls his “small tractor” still has 300 more horsepower than what you’ve got on your “big tractor”. 7. Decide on your plan of action: (A) Buy a Poulan Tree Pruner from Lowe’s, (B) Anchor the pontoon boat next to each stump and cut the visible roots, and (C) Hook up a chain to fourwheel drive SUV on shore and yank the stumps out. 8. See if one of your buddies wants to help you on a weekday; you don’t want to try this out in front of all your neighbors who will be there on weekends, unt i l you’ve got it perfected. Three of your buddies agree to help. Kind of like watching a car wreck; while not pleasant to watch, they just can’t help themselves from witnessing firsthand how this is going to work out. 9. Head to the lake. Pack a case of the “Beast” (Milwaukee’s Best; they might be friends, but they’re not that close.) 10. Pick up the first buddy. He also has a cooler; I hope he has better stuff. 11. Second and third buddies also bring coolers. 12. Get to lake and unload. 13. Anchor pontoon. 14. Start Pruner. 15. Move pontoon boat to a different location to get the “right angle” on the next visible root. 16. Wait for the water to clear up a bit. 17. Move pontoon boat. Cha nge Pruner operator.
18. Wait for the water to clear up. 19. Back the SUV up to water’s edge. 20. Connect chain. 21. Theori ze why nobody on t he internet offered this suggestion. 22. Stand back. Here goes. Rock it back and forth. “Yep, the stump seems to be moving.” 23. Keep this up for the next half hour, at occasional intervals visually looking at the progress in pulling out the first stump. 24. Your buddy who was back tending t he f i re notes t hat when you’re rocking the SUV back and forth, it appears you’re only sinking into the sand and soil and not moving. 25. Decide he’s wrong, but that you could probably attack this from a better angle. 26. Unhook SUV from stump. 27. “Hey boys, I’m a little stuck. Please help push.” 2 8 . SU V i s s t uc k . Ni g ht i me i s approaching. 29. Sheepishly call wife. Very briefly explain the need for her to swing by your buddy’s house, drop off the kids and bring his SUV to the lake. 30. Sit a round t he ca mpf ire a nd discuss what went right – and wrong. 31. Wife shows up with buddy’s SUV. Thankfully, pulling out the stuck SUV took little time. 32. Endure quiet ride home. Buddies are smart enough to all ride in the other vehicle. 33. Call buddies the next afternoon (morning was a little rough). Get one buddy to do a repeat performance the following week. Repeat steps 12 – 28, but smart enough this time to bring along a second vehicle. 34. Now left with two stumps that are much bigger problems with cut roots than originally. 35. Wife decides there’s got to be a method that doesn’t require so much work. Calls two or three companies on the lake who dredge or sink posts for docks, get competitive bids, selects contractor. . Time spent: Surfing the Internet: 72 hours Attempting stump removal: 22 hours Missed work: 16 hours Arlo Kallemeyn Shopper Publisher and big fan of do-it-yourself projects.
