Werner Grabs Third Senior Amateur Championship Title Heading into the final round of the IGA Senior Amateur Championship, Dyer’s Terry Werner led by three. Werner added a 72 to yesterday’s 67 for a 36-hole total of 1-under-par, 139 at Delaware CC. He defeated Sam Till Jr. by two strokes to grab his third Senior Amateur victory. “I won our Briar Ridge Club Championship this past weekend and everything has been clicking for me lately,” Werner said. “Anytime you can win a senior event in Indiana, you’ve done something right.” Werner is a Senior Open Champion (‘14) and now a threetime Senior Amateur Champion (‘09, ‘12, ‘16). His win today also earned him points for the IGA Senior Player of the Year Title, and he officially will be receiving this award in the Spring of 2017. Werner has hoped for a Player of the Year title for years now, and is excited to finally cross this off his bucket list. “This has been a goal of mine for as long as I remember,” Werner said. “It’s what we all work towards and I am very proud!” In the Super-Senior Division, Jim Anthony Franklin grabbed the title in a playoff against Mike Thompson, New Palestine. Both players carded 36-hole totals of 2-over-par, 142. This is Anthony’s first IGA Super-Senior Title. He is also an IGA Senior Amateur Champion with previous wins coming in ‘03 and ‘11.

Befriending Judas ANNA M. CAISON At this stage in my life I seem to be doi ng a lot of ref lect i ng. L i nger i ng over coffee after breakfast I said aloud to myself, “You’ve certainly done some stupid things, Ann! Why?” The “stupid t h i ngs” bei ng, I k now i ng ly a l lowed people into my life who would cause me heartbreak. As I began to chide myself I was reminded (divinely, I’m sure) of Jesus’ relationship with Judas. On severa l occasions Jesus acknowledged that He had chosen each of His disciples and one of them was a devil. When Jesus met Judas He knew the pain Judas would cause Him. Yet, He welcomed Him to the group. He treated Judas as He did the others, like a brother. He loved him, instructed him, included him in ministry events, and even gave him a position among the disciples as the ministry team’s treasurer. Why? Aside from the role Judas would play in ushering in God’s plan of redemption for us, Jesus was compelled to share His life with Judas so that when Judas became confronted with the sin of his betrayal of Jesus, he would know that he could be forgiven. Unfortunately, he became so overwhelmed with grief and agony at what he did, he took his own life. I realize now that it was God who compelled me to extend my hand in fellowship to my Judases, to befriend September 15, 16, 17, 9-3  10700 S. them, and to allow them access to my hea rt. Even t hough I saw t heir tr ue intentions, I knew the risk and invited them in. And then it happened, betrayal, . . . slander . . . oust. L i ke Juda s, t hey have t he sa me opportunity to be forgiven. Two of my Judases repented and fellowship was restored. Another two, I saw at separate times in the grocer y store. Upon eye contact they rushed off. One of them I caug ht up w it h a nd embraced her. W it h ner vousness i n her voice a nd trembling hands she responded to my “How are you?” She then asked about my granddaughter. After replying, she hurried off. And then there are those whose hearts are so hardened that when I run into them they remark how surprised they are that I look so well and rested. “Bye,” they say as they curtly turn and walk away. Swallowing the last sip of my now cold coffee, I understand God used those painful relationships to produce in me His genuine love, forgiveness, grace and mercy to others as He continues to mold me into the image of His Son. Lower Falls located in Yellowstone Park _____________________________________________

Sometimes our children pull down the window blinds so they can better play their v ideo games. For many in our younger generations their primary window into the world is through a computer or television screen. It is possible that one never pulls up the blinds to gaze on the wonder of things beyond human invention. So on this 100th anniversar y of the national parks my family spent a week in Yellowstone. We witnessed a true Buffalo herd. We saw Old Faithful being faithful. We walked among towering waterfalls and colorful hot springs . . . falling in would have spelled certain death. The smell of sulfur reminded us Yellowstone is the world’s largest volcanic crater, and we were in it; the geysers and acidic hot springs a sign of the molten lava below. A hike up Mt. Washburn, above the tree line at elevation 10,243 feet, gave us a great view of the park, but our best

view was at night, after the ranger’s talk, on the empty and quiet shores of Yellowstone Lake, looking up at the stars on a cloudless, moonless night. In all my years and many journeys into the wilderness, I had never seen the stars so brilliantly present. The Psalmist was right. “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard.” Psalm 19:1-3 We are told the national parks belong to us; I would add: they are God’s country. They are windows, with greater resolution than the most advanced computer or television screen, if we will only pull open the blinds. - Rev. Tom Archer Thorn Creek Reformed Church

Half Price for Vendors for a limited time!

Question: I’m trying to buy a home for the first time, did the usual contract, had the inspection done and found out the roof had four layers of shingles. The inspection report came out and stated the roof was not leaking, but structurally it was dangerous. The sellers came back and said they will fix the roof, but increase the price of the house. That was a verbal, and we stated no because we did not expect to pay more for the house. To make a long story short, the sellers are two attorneys and they are now threatening us with legal action because they said nothing is wrong with the roof and they agreed to fix it anyway. A nswer : You need to get you r ow n attorney and have him or her look at the purchase agreement and all disclosure statements. Most likely the building code requires that no more than two layers of roofing material can be used. The reason for this is to limit weight on the roof. Too much weight could cause structural problems. As to the seller’s offer, it’s a counter offer to fix the roof at your cost in the form of a higher price to which you have not

agreed. What, exactly, is attractive about that? Question: How can I be sure that now is the time to sell and buy? Answer: You can’t. There’s no way to time the market, to buy at the low point and to sell at the high. What you can do is buy or sell in response to your needs and preferences. If you think about the most-successful real estate “investors” it often turns out that they’re simply people who needed shelter, lived in their home for many years, paid down their mortgage and then had significant equity when they sold. It’s an old formula -- and one which has largely worked for most owners, most of the time and in most markets. Moving Evaluation Forward at School District 205 by Arlo Kallemeyn

School District 205 is made up of Thornwood High School in South Holland, Thornridge High School in Dolton, and Thornton High School in Harvey. District 205 proudly serves over 5,000 students in the 9th through 12th grade. Teacher evaluators from District 205 recently spent the day with experts from The Consortium for Educational Change (CEC). The goal was to enhance and streamline the district’s teacher evaluation process. The evaluators work focused on the following points:

School District 205 staff attending evaluation seminar conducted by Consortium for Education Change

What evaluators are doing to ensure the district is effectively meeting the requirements for teacher evaluation.

Strategies needed for evaluators to sustain the fair and consistent evaluation of teachers.

Create a prioritized plan targeting identified needs.

How the team will work together to sustain effective evaluation practices.

How the evaluators will be accountable to each other.

The board of education and the administration of School District 205 continue to implement the Strategic Plan that was recently created with the help of community leaders, faculty and other district stakeholders. District 205 continues to create high expectations for teachers, and also to equip them with the resources they need to create success in the classroom for each student. Calumet City’s Annual Labor Day Parade

From The Publisher

www.myshopper.biz/columnists/

Changes ARLO KALLEMEYN If there is one thing that is certain it is change. These days change happens much faster than in our parents’ generation. Just chat with someone over the age 70 and ask t hem about t he ma ny changes in society that have happened in their lifetime. A v a l u a b l e change model was f irst int roduced by Sw iss-A merica n Ps ych iat r i st E l i s a bet h K ü b l e r- R o s s i n 1 9 6 9 and was inspired by her w or k w it h t er m i n a l l y ill patients. T h e K u b l e r-R o s s Mo de l, i s a s e r ie s of emotional stages experienced when faced w it h a signif icant loss. The f ive stages a re denia l, a nger, ba rga ini n g , d e p r e s s i o n a n d acceptance. The stages include: Denial — As the reality of loss is hard to face, one of the first reactions to follow the loss is Denial. W hat t his mea ns is that the person is trying to shut out t he rea lit y or mag n it ude of t hei r situation, and begin to develop a false, preferable reality. Anger — “W hy me? It’s not fair!”; “How can this happen to me? ”; ‘”W ho is to bla me ? ” Once i n t he se c ond st a ge, t he individual recognizes that denial cannot continue. Bec au se of a nger, t he person is very difficult to care for due to misplaced feelings of rage and envy. Ba r ga i n i ng — “I’l l do anything for a few more years.”; “I w ill give my l i fe s av i ng s i f…” T he third stage involves the hope that the individual ca n somehow undo or avoid t he c au se of c h a n ge. Pe ople goi n g t h roug h cha nge s m ay try to bargain or seek to negotiate a compromise.

For example “Can we still be friends?” when facing a brea k-up. Bargaining rarely provides a sustainable solution. Depression — “I’m so s ad, w hy bot her w it h anything?” An individual may become silent and refuse visitors. It is natural to feel sadness, regret, fe a r, a nd u nc er t a i nt y when goi ng t h roug h this stage. Feeling these e m ot i o n s s h o w s t h a t t he person ha s beg u n to accept the situation. Often times, this is the ideal path to take, to find closure and make their ways to the fifth step Acceptance. Acceptance — “It’s going to be okay.”; “I can’t fight it, I may as well prepare for it.” In this last stage, individuals begin to come to terms with the change around them. This stage varies according to the person’s situation. This t y pica lly comes w it h a calm, retrospective view for the individual, and a stable mindset. Kubler-Ross originally de velope d t h i s model based on her observations of people suf fer ing f rom ter m i na l i l l ness. She later expanded her t heor y wou ld apply to any form of catastrophic personal loss, such as the death of a loved one, the loss of a job or income, major reject ion, t he end of a relationship or divorce, drug addiction, incarceration, the onset of a disease or chronic i l l ne s s , a n i n f e r t i l it y diagnosis, as well as many tragedies and disasters (and even minor losses). As we all go through changes during the years a head, the Kubler Ross model might help dea l with the uncertainties of life. Financial Advice Column

Consider All Aspects of College Savings Options BOB KRYGSHELD It ’s b a c k-t o -s c ho ol time. If you have young children going to public s c ho ol s, y ou r big ge st expenditures may be on pencils and notebooks. But i f you wa nt t hose same kids to go to college someday, you’ll eventually face considerably larger costs – so you may want to start preparing soon. College is costly. For the 2015-16 school year, t he average ex pense (including tuition, fees room a nd boa rd) wa s nearly $20,000 at a public, four-year school, and more than twice that amount at a four-year private school, according to the College Board. Of course, cheaper alternatives are available – your children could go to a loca l com mu n it y college for two years at a very reasonable cost, and then transfer to a four-year school. Still, if your child does go on to get a bachelor’s degree, those big bills will eventually arrive. As you consider how you can best deal with these costs, ask yourself these questions: • How much can I afford to contribute? As much a s you’d l i ke to help you r ch i ld ren pay for college, you also have to t h i n k about you r ow n needs – specifically your retirement. Think ver y carefully before reducing cont r ibut ion s to you r retirement pla ns, such as your IR A and 401(k), to help f und a college sav ings plan. A fter a ll, your children may be able to get scholarships and grants, and even if they have to take out loans, they’ll have many years in which to repay them – but you can’t postpone saving for ret irement w it hout jeopardizing your ability to enjoy a comfortable lifestyle. • W hat college sav ings plan should you consider? A nu m b e r of c ol le g e sav i ngs opt ions a re available. For example,

you could contribute to a 529 plan which offers potential tax advantages a nd h ig h cont r ibut ion limits. You mig ht a lso consider a c ustod ia l account, such as an UGMA or UTMA, although when your children reach the age of majority, they are free to do whatever they want with the money – and their plans may not include college. • What will be the effect of a college savings plan on financial aid? W hen colleges determine financial aid packages, they will evaluate your child’s assets differently t han your assets. Your child typically would be expected to contribute 20 percent of his or her assets, while you are only expected to contribute up to 5.6 percent of your a s s et s. C on s e quent l y, you may be better of f s av i ng for c ol le ge i n your name, rather than your chi ldren’s. Under the federal financial aid g uidelines, a n UTM A/ UGM A account is classif ied as a student asset, whi le 529 pla ns are counted as parental assets if parents are the accou nt ow ners. ( T he r u les on f i na ncia l a id are not always so clearcut, however, so it might be worth your while to contact a financia l aid officer at a local college or university to ensure that your chosen method of saving will still allow for the greatest possible assistance.) As you can see, you’ve got several factors to think about when it comes to helping your kids meet t heir higher education goals. Study up on these options, so you can find the right answers for your family’s needs. Are You A Serious Seller? MIKE BUDER Recent ly we have beg un to show a lot of h om e s . Ho w e v e r, n ot a day goes by t hat we don’t get responses from our request to show that “Today isn’t a good day for t he seller. Ca n you come tomorrow?” or “The seller has a dog and can’t get over there to get it” or “The seller said you can come after 5 or one day next week”. My favorite was a second showing on a property that had been on the market for over 400 days and we could not get in on Saturday afternoon because that was when their child took her nap. The ma rket has not changed overnight a nd be c ome a s el ler s market. It’s still a buyers ma rket ! Some of t hese responses are for Saturday s how i ng s . O f t en t he y come when we’re calling the day before. Really, in today’s market can you afford to skip showings? SELLERS, PLEASE L IST E N U P. “Re a ltor s work by appointment.” If Susie Rea ltor has an appointment with buyer X o n Tu e s d a y, t h a t ’s the day they need to see your home. Wednesday

s h e ’s e i t h e r w i t h a different buyer – with a different house criteria requirement – or that’s the day she’s taking off to be with her own family. If buyer X doesn’t see your house and likes one of the homes he does get into, you may have lost a sale! Do you want to move! Saturday is the biggest showing day of the week. If you’re leav ing home, leave the house ready to show. W hen you leave for work everyday, leave the house ready to show. Don’t ask the buyers agent to come some other day. It doesn’t work that way. If you don’t want showings, save everyone’s time and just take your house off the market. Overcoming Your Credit Card Crisis The battle with credit card debt can be a constant struggle against high interest rates and monthly payments that never seem to make a dent in what you owe. How is it possible to make monthly credit card payments and never get anywhere? This problem is caused by high interest rates that eats up most of your payments. Even though you make your minimum payment, you don’t make much headway eliminating the debt. Luckily, there’s a way to find debt relief without incurring more debts. Using certified credit counseling like Consolidated Credit, you can get

professional advice to identify the right solution for your needs. A certified credit counselor can review your options to see which solution is best for you. You can qualify for lower interest rates or even eliminate them, while consolidating your credit card debt into one easy payment to get you out of debt faster. Every financial institution differs, but most people see a reduction of total payments by up to 30-50% as they pay off debt faster. Freedom from debt can become a reality!

The Doctor Did Not Know

WOODROW WILCOX On Aug ust 19, 2016, after less than a week of bit by bit work, I wrote a letter to a doctor to tell h i m t h at t he bi l l i ng/ bookkeeping service that he was using was either dishonest or sloppy. The doctor did not know that until I told him. With editing to protect the personal information of ou r cl ient a nd t he identity of the innocent doctor, here is the body of my letter to the doctor. ### Dear Doctor, On your behalf, (your bi l ling/book keeping service) sent a bill to our client which was dated 08/08/16 which sought a balance of $139.46 for s e r v ic e s r e nde r e d on 09/28/15, 10/01/15, and 01/ 0 4 /16 o n A c c o u n t Number X X X X X X X. The bill is false. The client a nd I phone d h i s Me d ic a r e supplement i nsu ra nce compa ny to ask about the pay ments from the insurance company after Medicare approved the charges and paid its share. The insurance company reported that it ha s pa id t he ent i re balance of $139.46. But, your bookkeeping service h a s not c r e d it e d t he payments to our client’s

accou nt. Here a re t he facts of the checks that were sent to your f irm AND CASHED. paid Chk Cut Cleared $15.48 10/28/15 02/22/16 $12.30 10/28/15 02/22/16 $111.68 02/03/16 06/13/16 Please, correct your records of ou r cl ient’s account and start investigating why your bi l l i ng / book keepi ng service cashed the checks but never credited our client’s account. ### All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency distinguishes itself from others by “going the extra mile” for our clients to prote c t t hem f rom false bills that could hurt t hem f ina ncia lly. Does your insurance agent or agency give this high level of service to senior citizen clients? If not, why not? Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill ca se worker at Sen ior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana.
