Can’t Pay Your Phone Bill? Staying connected to local resources and emergency services can improve and possibly save many lives, says Commissioner Miguel del Valle of the Illinois Commerce Commission. Access to local emergency services and community resources is vital to our low-income and elderly residents. Commissioner del Valle wants residents to “stay connected” and is reaching out to those who need phone service but can’t afford it. During “Lifeline Awareness Week,” September 14-20, the Federa l Communications Commission, the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners, and various state utility regulating agencies across the country will promote the Lifeline Assistance Program which offers discounts to help residents have access to basic local telephone service. Lifeline helps low income consumers connect to the nation’s communications networks, find jobs, access health care services, connect with family, and call for help in an emergency. Under the federal Lifeline program, telephone customers who participate in or are eligible for certain public assistance programs are entitled to receive a basic telephone service discount of at least $9.25 per month. More information on program eligibility, rules and key messages is available at http://www.fcc.gov/lifeline/outreach. To check eligibility and apply for benefits, contact your local telephone company.

exploration of loss, family and the question of whether we can escape the past, The House of Mirrors and Hearts focuses on three complex but strong women and a young academic who inadvertently finds himself tangled in their story. This musical runs July 8-10, 15-17, 21-24, 2016. The final show of the 2016 season is the raucous comedy, Secrets of a Soccer Mom by Kathleen Clark. Three engaging women reluctantly take the field in a mothers vs. sons soccer game. They intend to let the children win, but as the game unfolds they become intent on scoring. The competition ignites a fierce desire to recapture their youthful good-humor, independence and sexiness, paving the way toward a better understanding of themselves, their families and changes they need to make in their lives. The performances are September 9-11, 16-18, 22-25, 2016. Don’t miss out on all four shows at the low price of only $55. That’s only $13.75 per ticket. This early bird price is only good until December 5th. So order your Season Tickets today. Indiana Bicentennial Celebration Indiana has seen abundant change since Dec. 11, 1816, when it was admitted as the 19th state in the union. Back then, mountain lions roamed our thick forests and elk grazed our prairies. The majestic bison, so legendary among both Native Americans and European settlers, already was nearly gone, but a few still roamed Indiana’s western edge. Indiana’s population in those days -- about 65,000 -- was roughly equal to that of modern Terre Haute. The capital was Corydon, having been moved from Vincennes in 1813. Since becoming a state, Indiana has steadily advanced into the modern age, building legacies in health, medicine and technology; agriculture, business and industry; art, music and literature. Hoosiers have taken strides in civil rights and helped defend America’s liberties both at home and abroad. As the Bicentennial approaches, we celebrate all that histor y and more. We look for ward with anticipation, purpose and collective determination at ways to leave a lasting legacy for our descendants. As co-chairs of the Indiana Bicentennial Commission, we want all Hoosiers to be engaged and all communities celebrated. Governor Mike Pence and First Lady Karen Pence will join us when the Bicentennial year kicks off on Statehood Day -- Dec. 11, 2015. Across the state, citizens are creating unique ways to mark the occasion. The Bicentennial Commission has endorsed more than 500 projects fitting into one of four categories – historical celebration; youth and education;
community involvement; and nature conservation. W h i le t hese Bicenten n ia l Legac y Projects over whelmingly celebrate loca l communities, ot hers promote a statewide perspective. As approved by the Indiana General Assembly, a new state archives facility will provide much-needed protection and security for Indiana’s historic documents and artifacts. Such cherished treasures as our original 1816 and 1851 state constitutions will be housed in accommodations built to modern standards and easily available to view. Recognizing children are the future of Indiana and its communities, legislators also have approved the planned Statehouse Education and Welcome Center, to be housed in the Indiana State Library. The venue will provide the more than 40,000 students who visit each year with a place to learn about laws, government and the Statehouse. T h roug h t he Bicenten n ia l Nat u re Tr ust, we a re conserving natural space across Indiana -- with 83 land acquisition projects completed since the Trust’s 2012 inception. These projects represent more than 7,800 acres of recreational trails, parks and quiet spaces set aside for future generations to use and enjoy. These investments in our future have been a long time in the making. It’s fitting that we undertake them in conjunction with our Bicentennial. This fall, we will release a commemorative book, “Indiana at 200: A Celebration of the Hoosier State.” When we asked for photos depicting the essence of Indiana, Hoosiers
submitted 6,300 in 30 days from every county in Indiana. That’s a lot of Hoosier pride! Next year, the Bicentennial Torch Relay will travel through all 92 Indiana counties – starting at Cor ydon and traveling approximately 2,300 miles over a five-week period before finishing at a new Bicentennial Plaza on the Statehouse grounds. Recently, Lt. Gov. Sue Ellspermann announced another exciting statewide initiative – a “visioning project” in which Hoosier experts will discuss change and set sights for Indiana over the next 50 years in such areas as agriculture, education, business, civic engagement, philanthropy, arts and health. First Lady Karen Pence, as our official ambassador, is traveling the state visiting Legacy Projects and helping get Hoosiers excited about contributing their own inventiveness and civic spirit to the celebration. W herever you live, gett ing involved is as easy as contacting a volunteer county coordinator. Our website, www.indiana2016.org, has a complete listing by county. Or, you can call (317) 234-8686 to get more information. The Indiana Bicentennial Commission has shifted into high gear. We hope you will consider ways you and your community might celebrate the Bicentennial and, in doing so, create an even better future for Hoosiers. Former U.S. Rep. Lee Hamilton and former Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman are co-chairs of the Indiana Bicentennial Commission.

Neuromas
Neuromas are a scarring of a sheath surrounding the nerve. They usually occur between the 3rd and 4th toes but can be found elsewhere as well. Symptoms include feeling a click in the ball of the foot, or electrical shocks shooting to the ends of the affected toes. Surgery is nearly always needed to alleviate the symptoms although injections, padding or physical therapy can help. If you have any questions concerning neuromas or any other foot problems, please stop by or call my office during office hours.

We’re THAT Good!
GOD WITH US
www.myshopper.biz/columnists/
Choices ANNA M. CAISON Although God created all things for His purposes, He has granted His highest form of creation the right to exercise free will; the right to choose. We can choose to live for Him or choose to live unto ourselves. It’s our choice! There’s been a lot of debate over the actions of a county clerk in Kentucky who refused to issue a marriage license to a same sex couple because it violated her Christian beliefs. Was she right or wrong? The Bible teaches that Christians are to obey civil authorities because they are ordained by God to keep order and for punishing wrong doers. Since our government is not a theocracy, some of our laws will be in conflict with our faith. Christians who are elected to serve as an official in government are required to uphold t he law. The only time a Christian, official or private citizen, can refuse to obey the law is when it infringes on the personal relationship between the individual and God. The clerk refused to issue the marriage license to the same sex couple because the Bible teaches that homosexual unions go against God’s plan for humanity. Was the clerk’s religious right being violated? No. Were her personal beliefs being violated? No. Issuing the license to a
couple who chose to live outside of God’s plan did not violate the clerk’s right to believe and live within God’s plan. The clerk may have felt that in issuing the license she would become a partaker in the couple’s sin against God. If that is the case, she should seek religious exemption that would relieve her from the duty of issuing same sex marriage licenses. If exemption is denied, then she should resign from her position and seek another area of employment that doesn’t require her to do things that are in conflict with her faith. We ca n not force gover n ment or unbelievers to live according to God’s plan. Since God gives every individual t he opt ion to choose, we must g ive everyone we encounter the same option. The only thing we can do is share the Gospel message in love. Those who reject the Gospel will face the consequences of their decision when they stand before the Lord in judgment. Those who receive the Gospel and repent, turning their lives over to Christ, will be a crown of life to the one who shared the Gospel with them. For questions and/or comments, send an email to acaison@sbcglobal.net . Or you can write me at: Anna Caison, P.O. Box 529, Lansing, IL 60438.

in the long run and the new equipment will be a welcome change for our members”. The Y hopes to receive the rest of their new equipment by the end of the week and has invited Mayor Thomas McDermott out next Monday, September 14th, to see the new facility. W h i le not necessa r i ly a new face, Gonzales took over as the Executive Director in back in May. Before that he served as the Program Director. The Y is also in the process of hiring a new Child Care Director. Gonzales added, “With me coming into this position we currently have an opening for a Program Director.” Anyone who may be interested in the position should email him at jgonzales@crymca.org.
The Hammond Y MCA is seeing some big changes lately in many different areas. When members walk through the door in the near future, they will notice some new faces and an updated fitness center. The Hammond Y recently re-opened after their 2-week maintenance shutdown. During the shutdown, much of the focus was on the 4,500 member branch’s fitness center. A lot of aging, outdated equipment was removed to make room for new, state of the art cardio and weight equipment. The lighting was also updated to brighten the room. “The old lighting gave the space a dark, basement feel,” says Jimmy Gonzales, the branch’s Executive Director. “Not only does it brighten the place up, the new energy efficient L.E.D. lighting will save us money

CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: I need some sound adv ice about the current market because I think I’m going crazy. Just when I t hought prices in my a rea were a l ready double what t he average income qualifies for in mortgage payments, I’m now even more shocked to see new listings that are $50,000 or more overpriced in desirable areas according to online valuations. Why are seller’s agents overpricing the houses, according to fair market values from recently sold homes? How do they just if y such prices? W hy do brokers encourage buyers to invest at these prices, when common sense tells me, if rates go up, and people are shut out of the market, there will be even fewer qualified buyers, so prices have to go down! Do brokers have any code of ethics for the crisis they’re creating in this market? Please tell me something to ease my misery about the current market! Answer: You’re not cra z y. There a re several answers. Fi r st, w hy do you t h i n k on l i ne valuations are accurate? Do online sites have appraisers in your neighborhood who reported to them recently, or do they work by statistics which may be out-ofdate, inaccurate and not ref lective of individual properties? Online sites work on averages assuming all homes are alike.
They even compare regular homes to foreclosed homes, which is ridiculous. Second, imagine if you were a seller. Wou ld you hire a broker to sel l t he property for less than market value? If brokers are over-pricing properties then buyers won’t buy. Asking prices will soon fall if buyers just say no. Third, home values are not based on a multiple of average incomes. They are based on what the market will bear. In effect, buyers are self-selected by their willingness to purchase at a given price and their financial ability to do so. Seen another way, homes are not universally affordable. As a buyer you must use your own judgment. If prices make no sense to you, vote with your dollars and don’t buy now. Use the services of a Realtor, someone obligated to work in your best interest as a purchaser, to better understand local trends and to spot properties that meet your requirements. State Rep. Thaddeus Jones Fighting to Restore Child Care Assistance St ate Rep. T haddeu s Jones, D-Dolton, is fighting to protect childcare assistance for working families by voting to reverse Gov. Bruce Rauner’s rule changes that will make thousands of working people and their children ineligible. “The families in my district are working day and night to put food on the table and keep a roof over their children’s heads,” Jones said. “I am appalled that the governor would strip them of the services they need without allowing them to have a say.” Jones voted for Senate Bill 570, which would restore the governor’s restrictive new eligibility rules for the state’s Child Care Assistance Program. This past July, Rauner unilatera lly imposed strict rule changes limiting the eligibility for applicants leaving 90 percent of previous recipients unable to receive child care assistance. Rauner made the changes without consulting the Legislature or allowing any public
comment. The Illinois Department of Human Services has reports that at least 1,150 applicants have already

been denied under t he new r ules. Jones’ legislation would restore the el ig ibi l it y re qu i rement s to t hei r previous levels, protecting services for the thousands of working families and single parents who would lose assistance from the governor’s changes. It also provides these unilateral rule changes from happening again by requ i r i ng t he gover nor to sol icit feedback from families, advocates and lawmakers before changing eligibility requirements for services. “Across my district, parents are picking up extra shifts and part-time jobs to make sure their bills are paid and they’re children can go to school with lunch money. In an effort to make a better life and earn a higher wage, many of these parents are also trying to fit classes into their schedules,” Jones said. “I will keep continuing to fight for the working families in Illinois because t he t ireless pa rents a nd innocent children deserve better.”

Like A “Keystone Cops” Claims System WOODROW WILCOX On September 9, 2015, I helped a client resolve problems with $1,375.93 of unpaid medical bills. The total was a combination of t h ree bi l ls on t h ree dates from one hospital in Chicago. The client is from Cedar Lake, Indiana. Re ga rd i ng t he f i r st date of service and bill, Medicare denied the claim at f irst. But, Medicare cha nged it s m i nd a nd approved t he claim for med ica l ser v ices a f ter an appeal of the denial. But, Med ica re never even bothered to inform ou r cl ient ’s i n su r a nce company that the claim w a s approve d so t hat the insurance company could pay its share. Do y ou u nder s t a nd t h at ? Me d i c a r e n e v e r e v e n bothered to tell our client’s insurance company about its reconsideration and approval of the medical services. The second claim was reported to the insurance company as being denied. But, Medica re told t he client a nd me t hat t he second cla i m was approved. But, the hospital was never paid and wanted money from our client. So, I asked for proof of approval to be sent to our client so that we could forward it to his i nsu ra nce compa ny so that bill can be processed and paid. The third claim was mixed up, too. According to t he hospita l, it f iled Boat for sale: 17 foot fiberglass boat w/trailer, 140 HP Mercruiser I/O. good condition $1750. 708-8623889
the claim with Medicare. According to the Medicare representative, Medicare never received a claim from the hospita l. According to the insurance company, it received a report that Me d i c a r e d e n i e d t h e claim. So, I wrote to the hospital and asked that the claim be sent again t o Me d i c a r e b e c a u s e Medicare said it never got the claim the first time. I believe that the letter that I wrote to the hospital and t he forms t hat t he cl ient w i l l get f rom Medicare will resolve all the medical bill problems a nd get t he bi l ls pa id. A ll the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agenc y d ist ing u ishes itself by “going the extra mile” to help our senior citizen clients with such Medicare related medical bill problems. Does your insurance agent or agency g ive t h is h ig h level of service to seniors? If not, why not? Note : Woodrow Wi lcox is the senior medical bill c a se worker at Sen ior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of t hat i nsu ra nce agenc y over one million dollars by correcting medical bill er rors in t he Medica re system. He wrote the book S O LV I N G M E D I C A R E PROBLEM$.

On Geese and Friends ARLO KALLEMEYN W hen you see geese head i ng sout h for t he w i nter f ly i ng i n a “V ” formation, you might be i nterested i n k now i ng what scient ist s have d i sc overe d about w hy they f ly that way. It has been learned that: …as each bird flaps its wings, it creates a n uplif t for t he bi r d i m me d i a t e l y following. By f lying in a “V” formation, the whole f lock adds at least 71% more flying range than if each bird flew on its own. Tr ut h #1: Pe ople w ho sh a re a c om mon d irect ion a nd sense of community can get where t hey a re going quicker and easier because they a re t ravel i ng on t he t h r ust of one a not her. …w h e n e v e r a g o o s e falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to go it alone and quickly gets back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird immediately in front. Tr ut h # 2 : T her e i s strength and power and safety in numbers when t r avel i ng i n t he s a me direction as others with whom we share a common
goa l. …w hen t he lead goose gets tired, he/she rotates back in the wing and another goose f lies point. Truth #3: It pays to take t u r ns doing ha rd jobs. …t he geese hon k f rom behind to encourage those up front to keep up their speed. Truth #4: We all need to be remembered w ith active support and praise. …fina lly, when a goose gets sick or is wounded and falls out, two geese fall out of formation and follow him/her down to help a nd protect. They st ay w it h t he dow ned goos e u nt i l t he c r i si s resolves, and then they launch out on their own or with another formation to catch up with their group. Truth #5: We must stand by each other in times of need. We are fortunate that there are more geese in life than turkeys. Let’s remember to uphold each other in friendship and in work each day – and to give each other a big “HONK” now and then. Arlo Kallemeyn Shopper Publisher a nd big fan of lessons from a goose.

MIKE BUDER I a m mot i v ate d b y commission and I won’t deny it! I get calls several times a month to evaluate expired listings that other broker s f a i le d to sel l. Besides exa m i n i ng t he pr ice a nd cond it ion of the home, I will always examine the commission structure of the previous listing agent. Very often the broker compensation was not adequate enough to motivate agents to bring their buyers through the front door. Realtors are not a ny d i f ferent t ha n ot her professiona ls. W hy do consu mers go to work ever yday? W hy do t he y del i v er m a i l, operate companies, drill for oi l a nd teach litt le children how to count? T hey probably chose their profession because t he y l i ke d it . Perhaps they developed a passion for t he i ndust r y wh i le i n school. But I wou ld venture to say not many of them would continue to show up to the office everyday if they weren’t getting paid. In fact, they work ha rder, cont i nue t hei r educat ion a nd usually do everything in their power to climb the pay scale. Realtors today like to help buyers find new homes a nd sel lers to get t hei r proper t ies

There’s a reason why 75% of all new real estate agents fail. . .it’s because this business is ver y difficult today and very expensive to play in. So ever y penny counts. Personally, if I were a seller today, I would rather hire a n a g g re s si v e (mone y motivated) agent versus anyone else. They’ll work that much harder to sell my house. I would know t hat at t he end of t he day…. I and only I w ill make the decision as to how much I will sell my house for. . .not the agent! Prayer to the Blessed Virgin
(Never known to fail.) Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in Eternal Glory. Thank you for your mercy toward me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days. After 3 days, the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. MTM

What Can You Learn from the “Oracle of Omaha”? BOB KRYGSHELD Wa r ren Bu f fet , t he “Oracle f rom Oma ha,” is considered one of the most successful investors in history. Yet while the i nvest ment world may seem complex, his advice is actually pretty simple. Here a re a few Bu f fet quotes, along with some suggestions on putting them to use: “Whether we’re talking about sock s or stock s, I l i k e bu y i n g q u a l it y merchandise when it is marked down.” Essentially, this means you should look for good invest ment vehicles whose pr ice may have dropped. A “bear” market tends to drag down many stocks — even those with strong fundamentals and favorable prospects. These stock s m ig ht t hen be considered “bargains.” Be prepared to ow n qua l it y stock s for t he long ter m ; over t i me, your confidence may be rewarded. On the other hand, if an investment is not of high quality, its flaws will be revealed over the years. “I f i nv e stor s i n si st on tr y ing to time their participation in equities, t hey shou ld t r y to be fearful when others are greedy and greedy only when others are fearful.” Tr y i n g t o “t i me” t he ma rket — t hat is, attempting to buy when prices are low and sell when prices are high — is a dif f icu lt task. Too many people do just the opposite: They try to “cut t heir losses” by selling when the market is down and then go after the “hot” investment whose price may already be as high as it’s going to go. Mr. Buffet clearly is not in favor of a
market timing approach, and those who try to do it, he says, are probably better off by going against the crowd. Keep in mind, though, that even when hold i ng i nvest ments rather than trying to time the market, investing in equities does involve risk, including potential loss of principal. “ W h e n w e own portions of outstanding businesses with outstanding managements, our favorite holding period is forever.” When should you sell good investments? Never, according to Mr. Buffet. A nd while t his endless holding period may not be possible for all of us, you get the idea: the longer you keep a good investment, the better off you may be when you do sell. “The line separating investment and speculation, which is never bright and clear, becomes blurred still further when most market participants have recent ly enjoyed triumphs. Nothing sedates rationality like large doses of effortless money.” The lesson here? Be an investor, not a speculator. A long r u n-up i n t he market can increase your wealth, but it may also make you prone to risky behavior if you think that all your investments will rise indefinitely. As an investor, you may well want to consider Mr. Buffet’s ideas— after all, they’ve sure worked well for him. The front steps, railing, and brickwork are getting some TLC thanks to Lil and Kayla who tend to all 7 of Family Dental Care offices in and around the area. And, if you notice the lovely landscaping, that is courtesy of Lil and Kayla too! For more information on Lil’s fine work call her at 260-403-2544 or 260-403-8574. ***
SOUTH HOLLAND HERITAGE FEST BRINGS OUT THE LOCALS FOR A LOVELY LABOR DAY AFTERNOON. The Historic Paarlberg Farm in South Holland is the setting for the annual event which brings out crafters, book dealers, ice cream and candy confectioners, Ollie bollen pastries and barbeque among the many vendors. A history of South Holland and the Paarlberg Farm was a highlight of the event along with local bands and musicians and a bit of a museum of antique artifacts native to the far south suburb. Pictured here in the shade of the ancient trees are picnickers. Also pictured are Calumet City Author Cynthia Ogorek and Bee Kirchgatterer who are consultants with Usborne Books, a leading provider of all types of children’s books, “making reading fun!” ***

in Calumet City starting at about 9:30 a.m. set up your lawn chair, set up the umbrella if a sunny day, set your water bottle in the cup holder and wait for the show to begin. The parade starts at Michigan City Road and proceeds down Wentworth Avenue past the reviewing stand set up along side Calumet Memorial Park District Veteran’s Park. Pictured here are some of the dignitaries on that stand-Thornton Township Supervisor Frank Zuccarelli, 2nd Ward Alderman Leni Wosczynski, and her grandson, State Senator Donne Trotter, Judge Anthony Simpkins to name just a few. ***
