Take Action To Protect Ground Water T he Ind ia na Depa r t ment of Environmental Management (IDEM) i s te a m i ng up w it h t he I nd ia na Depa r t ment of Nat ura l Resources (DNR) and the United States Geological Survey (USGS) to remind Hoosiers how to prevent ground water contamination and conserve ground water supplies. Ninety-seven percent of the public water systems in Indiana draw all or part of their supply from ground water, and many residents rely on private wells for water to drink, cook with and bathe in. That adds up to about one million Hoosiers who rely on individual household water wells, and another 2.9 million residents who rely on public water supplies that draw all or part of their supplies from ground water. Preventing pollution and conserving ground water Pollution can result from careless or accidental chemical or petroleum spills, as well as careless and illegal dumping. Once contamination gets into ground water, it is very difficult to clean up. Data on ground water in Indiana shows the quality is good overall, and that supplies are generally adequate at this time. To keep supplies plentiful and clean, follow these tips. • Follow the label when using and storing cleaners, fertilizer, pesticides, a nd herbic ides, a s wel l a s w hen

Statewide Ground Water Monitoring Network Since 2008, the IDEM has conducted sampling of the Statew ide Ground Water Monitoring Network (GWMN). The overall goals of the project are to determine: 1) What is the general ground water quality across the state, 2) How source water and drinking water supplies can best be protected by ut i l i z i ng dat a der ived f rom a comprehensive approach to assessment and monitoring, 3) How ground water may affect the quality of surface waters, and 4) T he recha rge/d ischa rge relat ionsh ips of g rou nd water including surface water/ground water interaction. I DE M ha s col lec ted hu nd red s of well water samples this year for Indiana’s 2014 GWMN sampling effort. The study will help “tell the stor y” about ground water quality in different regions of Indiana, based on factors such as geology, depth to water, depth of the well, and land use. I got a l l this media attention and everything the world has to offer, but no peace, no joy, just emptiness inside. T he Bible descr ibes it i n t he f i rst chapter of Ecclesiastes as chasing

I tried to by myself somet hing to ma ke me happy a nd I wa s even empt ier t ha n before, because I could see that not hing cou ld possibly satisfy the hunger that was deep down inside of me. I tried throwing myself i n t o m y c a r e e r, i n t o sports, trying to see how far I could go, and when I achieved ever y goa l I could think of, I was right back w here I st a r te d . Empty, empty, empty and nothing I did could touch that deep loneliness inside of me. I was just running, I couldn’t stop. I was struggling with ju st a bout e ver y t h i ng in my life. My attorney (Eugene) could see what I was going through and he tried to help as much as he cou ld, but I was so d isappoi nted a nd disturbed about the way things were falling apart that I wouldn’t listen to his advice most of the time. He talked about his faith, how Jesus gave his life purpose, and things like that, but I wasn’t ready to receive any of that. (Later) I started asking Eugene w hat it mea nt to be a believer in Jesus Christ and he was telling me about being saved, and about this time I got a call from a guy I used to play with on the 49ers, Marc Logan. He was playing for the Washington Redskins and he was planning on being in Cincinnati that night and would like to meet w it h me. GSU Chorale Announces Season T he 130-voice Gover nors State Universit y Concert Chora le, under the direction of Albert M. Jackson, has announced their 2014 2015 season. The group, which operated for the past 16 seasons under the name South Suburban Chorale, recently moved to GSU. “We are very glad and excited to be at GSU,” said Jackson. “We look forward to continuing and expanding our musica l activ ities through the University, and want to reach out to the entire Chicago Southland area with our singing.” The Chorale has previously performed throughout the Chicago south suburban and Northwest Indiana region, and toured Europe. Ever t a ke a Te st ? ” Sm i l i ng , I be ga n to reminisce about my high school days. If it weren’t for prayer I would have flunked the 9th grade. With the exception of English, I made straight “Fs” during the first 3 marking periods of my freshman year. At the start of the 4th marking period, I came across Daniel 1:17 in the Bible. It reads, “As for these four young men [Daniel, Hanania h, Mishael, & A zaria h], God gave them knowledge and skill in all literature and wisdom; and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.” With childlike faith I reasoned, if God gave Daniel and his friends the ability to learn and understand the teachings of the Chaldeans; surely He could do the same for me! After all, He is the same yesterday, today and forever. On my knees, I began to pray that God would help me u ndersta nd ever y t h i ng my teachers taught. At the start of each class, I’d close my eyes, and whisper, “Lord Jesus, help me understand what is being taught.” And in each class, the subjects that were once difficult for me to comprehend, now seemed so simple! My test scores soared from 68% & 70% to 80%, 90%, and 95%. At the end of the final marking

period I passed my freshmen year with straight Ds. I cont i nued to seek God for His help. I finished my sophomore year with a B average, and my Junior and Senior year with an A average. And throughout college I maintained an A average. When I became a mother of school age children I taught them to pray before each class, asking the Lord to give them wisdom and understanding. I have shared this testimony with friends, my students, co-workers, and anyone who shares with me their struggle in passing a class. My g r a ndch i ld ren a re my most recent pa r ta kers of t he message of Da n iel 1:17. W hen t he 3 you ngest granddaughters came to me, two were having problems understanding math and one was failing in every subject. After ex pla i n i ng t he scr ipt u re to t hem, I had them memorize it, and pray every morning before school. Two of the three became honor students, and the other passed and is at grade level. They in turn, taught the scripture to their younger brother and now he’s a B average student. So, in the words of Lansing Presbyterian Church I ask, “No Prayer in School? Demolition on Shepard Ave in Dolton a Reality On the 144th Block of Shepard in Dolton sat a burned out hulk that was once a stately single family home. This home suffered a fire and it sat abandoned and vacant for years. When Mayor Riley Rogers was running for Mayor last year, he promised to start demolishing vacant and abandoned homes in the village. Demolishing a house does not come cheap and every village and town on the Southside is stretching their dollars. Mayor Rogers reached out to Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart, and together they found a solution— ’Neighborhood Restoration Initiative’ was born. This programs mission is fighting blight one house at a times.

This abandoned house has been vacant for years as a neighborhood eyesore.

The benefits of this program are several. The Cook County Sheriff provides the manpower to demolish vacant houses, and the Village of Dolton saved over $30,000 in expenses. Friends of Frank Picnic at Green Lake The biggest picnic of the year was hosted Sunday at Green Lake by Democrat Committeeman Frank M. Zuccarelli. The ‘Friends of Frank’ came out and renewed old friendships—and made new ones. The Cook County Forest Preserve was filled with crowds that enjoyed entertainment—and delicious food and drink. The lamb and sweet corn was roasting over coals, the cheeseburgers and brats were cooking on the grill and plenty of sides kept the main dishes company. Many statewide elected officials came including Illinois US Senator Dick Durbin, Lieutenant Governor Elect Paul Vallas, and State Rep Al Riley. Judges, Mayors and Aldermen and Trustees all came together on a beautiful day to celebrate what it means to be a Democrat in Illinois. Bulls star Craig Hodges was a popular crowd favorite as he told stories about the glory days of the Chicago Bulls playing next to Michael Jordan. Petitions were passed for signatures to raise the minimum wage in Illinois and everyone wanted to get on board. The highlight of the entertainment was the pint-sized Michael Jackson Impersonator who wowed the crowd with his moonwalk and rendition of ’Billy Jean.’ Everyone went home with good memories and promises to see each other again next year.

CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: I made an offer on a property t hat was $4,000 below ma rket va lue because the home has a water problem that the seller is not willing to fix. We called around and found a contractor who would fix the water problem for $3,000. I submitted an offer indicating that I will fix the problem myself. The next thing I know, the broker says he received another offer on the property. I had several of my friends call that broker’s office and inquire on the home. They were able to schedule appointments to see the home. They were told that there was an offer on the home with a 48-hour clause. One friend was told to put a bid on the house and it would automatically kick that other offer out. I called my broker and explained what I had found out. We submitted another offer, now only $2,000 below market value and again indicated that we would fix the water problem ourselves. Now that seller’s broker has counter offered indicating that we must agree to waive our right to a full house inspection. The problem is I really want this home. What can I do? Answer: It’s understandable that you feel strongly about the house. That said, let’s look at what you’ve seen. • Your original bid on the house was $4,000 less t han “market va lue.” Plainly “market value” is a debatable number. The seller has no obligation to accept such a bid. • The seller’s broker has disclosed that the property has water damage. That is the proper thing to do. • The seller’s asking price may well already reflect a perceived discount because of the water damage.

• There is a contingent offer on the property w ith a 48-hour kick-out clause. This means the property has not been sold because there might be a contingency of some sort which has not been satisfied. The contingent agreement likely says that if another of fer comes i n, t he f i rst bidder w ill have 48 hours to remove all contingencies and go through with the purchase, otherwise the seller can accept a back-up offer. • Because the property has not been finally sold, it will be marketed to other prospective buyers, which is what your friends discovered. • You made a second of fer on t he property. Like the first, the seller is not obligated to accept. You could make other offers. As much as you like this property, you have to wonder if it’s worth buying at the seller’s asking price and whether it’s in your favor to waive a home inspection. Sellers have a right to make their demands -- a nd so do buyers. To purchase a home without a structural inspection satisfactory to you when there has been a water problem may mean big repair bills in the future -- with little opportunity for recourse against the seller. The Village of Thornton honored and presented resident Richard Yavenue with a Proclamation of Appreciation at the Board Meeting September 2, 2014. T he P rocla mat ion i ncluded poi nt s about Richard Yavenue’s life. He has lived in Thornton with his wife Beatrice and family for the past 51 years. They have been married for 53 years and have 3 children (Tom, Rich and Amy) and 2 Grandchildren. Mr. Yavenue is a graduate of Thornton High School and proudly enlisted in the United States Marine Corps after high school during World War II.

He was injured during the invasion of Saipan in the South Pacific and was awarded the Purple Heart and has been an active member of the Thornton American Legion Post #1070 for 50 years. The 8th grade students along with their teachers created a class banner which was reflective their own class and school which was carried in an opening procession at the Mass. After the liturgy, students gathered together in the COS Gym to enjoy a pizza luncheon.

Weeds-t hey crop up unexpectedly then grow rapidly. If they are allowed to continue, they will overpower, to the point that one is unable to see anything beyond the weeds. In addition, these weeds will spring up again, unless they are pulled out by the roots. Our thoughts are similar to the above, thoughts come out of nowhere, then with the speed of lightening we determine if we are going to discard them or dwell upon them. If we dwell upon negative thoughts they can be likened to weeds that need to be pulled out quickly, or we can allow them to grow to the point that we are unable to see anything beyond the negative thoughts. Thoughts a f fect our behav ior a nd in turn our relationships. We process ever y t h i ng t hat is happen i ng to us t h roug h ou r t houg ht s. Ou r t houg ht grid plays a significant part in shaping our response. How are you responding? A re you easily angered, frustrated or anxious? Are you quick to take offense? Does strife seem to dog your footsteps? How would you define your daily life, is it characterized by drama and chaos? Here is a newsf lash, one that hit me recently, we do choose what we dwell

upon and our thoughts do create our environment for better or worse. Often we feel that it is beyond our control, yet we do have a choice in how we respond to all the stimuli around us. We don’t have to try to second guess the intention or motivation of others in fact; this is where misundersta nding a nd of fense of ten occurs. The truth is, only God knows what in the hearts of others… Here is another point worth noting w hen w e d w el l on t he ne g at i ve it actually effects the wiring in our brain which effects our perception in a way that perpetuates the negative. Yet, the good news is t hat our w iring can be restructured by good thoughts (thoughts that benefit us and others). Personally I have noticed how much more smoothly life goes when I adhere to tried and proven biblical principles. Thereto, I can quickly see when I begin to deviate from those principals! Love believes the best of others, hopes the best, is not easily angered or offended, it is not self- seeking (not focused on self yet wants what is best for others). 1st Corinthians 13 I don’t believe there is any greater lesson that can be learned, nor is there any lesson that can have as great an impact.
