Jim Kijewski is as much a fixture in the Village of Lansing as the clock tower that stands downtown on Ridge Road or the spirit rock that sits in front of T.F. South High School. W hen you ask someone about memories of Lansing, Kijewski’s name often comes up. The retired educator and coach made an impact on Lansing in many ways, from helping kids learn to swim in the many years he managed the Lan-Oak Pool or by seeing them on the little league fields as an umpire or teaching them about history or consumer economics in a classroom at Thornton Fractional South High School. In more recent years, he’s volunteered his time with the Golden K Kiwanis organization and the Lansing Historical Society. “When anyone asks me about my favorite teachers, I always say it was my history teachers and Mr. K was one of them,” said Chris Paliga, a member of T.F. South’s class of 1980 who owns Bohemian Joe’s restaurant in Lansing. “He and my grandpa were friends. He was an umpire when I was in little league. He’s just an icon in Lansing and has always been there for the kids.” Upon learning that Kijewski had a milestone birthday coming up, Paliga decided to open up his restaurant so that those in the community who know and love Kijewski would have a chance to celebrate with him and wish him well. Kijewski turned 80 on September 2. The Paliga family welcomed those in the community who knew “Coach K,” to come by for the open house on Sunday, September 11. Food was provided and in lieu of guests donating toward the food, Pa liga encouraged others to donate to a Go Fund Me page aimed at collecting contributions toward an improvement at a Lansing park. Paliga is working with the Lan-Oak Park District, which will accept contributions to be put toward a pavilion with a plaque honoring Kijewski or something else significant, depending on the amount of money raised, the needs of the park district and the wishes of Coach K. Kijewski also celebrated his birthday with his family (which includes his w ife Joann, four children, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren) in Maryland. Donations for the park district can be made at https://www. gofundme.com/2njku8kk.

Athlete’s Feet

Athlete’s feet is caused by a fungus which is commonly found associated with the feet. It is characterized by a burning or itching of the sole of the foot or between two toes. Many times the skin appears very moist but can also appear dry with peeling skin. It usually begins as small brown blisters with clear yellowish liquid inside. These usually turn darker when peeled to reveal red, sometimes raw skin. Prescription medications are many times needed to control the disease. If you have any questions concerning athlete’s feet or any other foot problems, please stop by or call my office during office hours.

The Musical of Musicals, The Musical Since 2010, the Towle Youth Theater Ensemble, or TYTE, has been entertaining audiences with productions such as the Northwest Indiana Premiere of Jason Robert Brown’s 13, Anne of Green Gables, Laughing Stock, Clue the Musical, Do Black Patent Leather Shoes Really Reflect Up?, Runaways and the World Premiere of Mental. The basic plot: June is an ingénue who can’t pay the rent and is threatened by her evil landlord. Will the handsome leading man come to the rescue? What is a Portable Fuel Container? ARLO KALLEMEYN You may never have hea rd of t he Portable Fuel Container, but you may have one in your ga rage. A Por table Fuel Container (or PFC for short) is not someone’s attempt at a joke. It comes to us from our government that can’t resist royally screwing something up. Before I tell you what a PFC is, think back with me for a moment. Remember when toilets actually worked the first time instead of repeated flushes? Remember when dish soap actually cleaned dishes until they sparkled? Remember when a 60 watt light bulb actually lit up a room? Remember when you didn’t have to hack your lawn mower so it doesn’t shut off when you take your hand off the handle? Or am I the only guy who does that? Good old American ingenuity has been slowly been strangled by the government bureaucrats. These are the people who sit behind a desk in the federal government and dream up ways to make life difficult for the rest of us. Oh they don’t do it all at once – they aren’t stupid. They pass a little regulation and then sit back to see the results. If it doesn’t result in a full blown revolution, they congratulate themselves - and know their next regulation can be even more annoying. One tactic they use is the give something simple a complicated new name. In this case, they chose the complicated ‘Portable Fuel Container’ to replace the simple gas can. They didn’t just rename it though. They made the new gas can so complicated that some people can’t even get one open. I guess that is one way to force us to conserve energy. Once you figure out how to open one of these new gas cans, your fun really starts. Filling your lawn mower or boat motor is a comedy of errors. First you will realize that the fancy new spout doesn’t work. It flat refuses to pour gas out of the spout. After closer inspection you realize that this spout is no ordinary spout. It has moving parts – with a spring inside it, and a little red tab. So now it is a 3 step process to fill the tank. 1. Twist end of spout to align with slot that allows spring to compress.

2. Engage red tab on spout with gas tank. 3. Press down with moderate pressure to engage spring and tab simultaneously. If you align the spring on the spout, and engage the tab correctly, and push down so the tab and spring work together, a small trickle of gas will finally come out. Now your arms are burning from holding 5 gallons of gas suspended in mid-air so you relax a moment. The new gas can senses its opportunity and the red tab slips off the rim. Gas splashes out and you have to start all over again. Once you have everything back in place you realize this new gas can has no vent. Your language takes a decided turn south. Who in the world will design a gas can where the gas and air has to travel through the same passage way – in opposite directions? I would venture to guess that these new gas cans are responsible for more gas spills onto lawns and into waterways than ever before. However, it may be so aggravating to actually use these new gas cans that we give up using gas altogether. Maybe that is their ultimate motive. Solar powered lawn mower anyone? Can you guess where many of these new regulations start? If you guessed California you would be correct. I’m not sure why California comes up with so many ideas, but they just don’t work here in the Midwest. Donald Trump wants to build a wall and make Mexico pay for it. I suggest there is a better way to protect ourselves. Build a virtual wall (they are much easier to build than a physical wall) and keep California bureaucrats from passing rules that mess up the rest of our country. Any rule that California passes should be confined to that state, and not allowed entry past the virtual wall. Let’s take it one step further. Let’s send back all these undocumented Portable Fuel C ont a i ner s a nd de cla re t hem unconstitutional. After all – on any given weekend, they are a serious threat to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. Arlo Kallemeyn Shopper Publisher - big fan of immigrants and old gas cans.

Adult Education Programs Provide Economic Opportunity Nat iona l Adu lt Educat ion a nd Literacy Week, September 26 – October 1, underscores the continued demand for programs and services for adult students who need to improve basic skills in reading, w r it i ng, a nd mat h a nd obta i n a h ig h school equivalency certificate. More than 36 million adults nationwide, including 1.2 million in Illinois, lack basic literacy skills that limit their ability to advance in education and at work. South Suburban College (SSC) is one of more than 84 adult education providers of fer i ng prog ra ms f u nded t h roug h t he Illinois Communit y College Boa rd (ICCB) that improves and expands the nation’s available pipeline of workers by assisting those who lack the educational requ i rements to ach ieve gainful employment in today’s increasingly hightech, global job market. Adult education provides a path from low-income jobs and limited opportunities to the middle class wages and family sustainability. Full-time workers with a high school diploma earn almost $10,000 more per year than those without a diploma.

SSC’s adult education programs serve over 600 students every year in the areas of Adult Basic Education, Adult Secondary Educ at ion, H ig h School Equ iv a lenc y, English as a Second Language, and Adult Literacy. Free Classes are offered at several convenient locations throughout the district including South Holland, Riverdale, Harvey, and Oak Forest. “Nearly 90 percent of the fastest growing jobs of the future require education or training beyond high school,” said Dr. Karen Hunter Anderson, ICCB Executive Director. “Illinois has taken the lead in creating pa r t nerships bet ween adu lt educat ion prov iders a nd employers to ensu re a seamless pathway for students to higher education and employment in high growth occupations.” For more i n for mat ion about adu lt education programs and services at South Suburban College v isit http://w w w.ssc. edu/adu lt-cont i nu i ng-educat ion/. True Perspective

DEE COLLINS

ANNA M. CAISON Perspective is a funny thing. There’s a tree outside my apartment window. When I’m sitting at my desk, the tree appears to be to the right side of the window. When I lay at the foot of my bed the tree looks like it’s in the middle of the window and its outstretched branches fill the entire window. And when I lay at the head of my bed, the tree seems to have moved to the far left side of the window and only the ends of its outstretched branches are visible. Curious, I decided to go outside to get a true perspective of the tree in front of my window. Once outside I discover that the tree isn’t in front of my window, it’s to the right of the building. The tree’s outstretched branches are above the roof of the building and is not visible to me from inside my first f loor apartment. The outstretched branches that filled my window are actually from the tree that’s positioned directly behind the tree that’s to the right side of the building! What appeared to be from 3 different views from inside my apartment was a distorted view of the actual position of the tree when seen from outside my apartment. This little exercise reminded me of a passage of scripture from Isaiah when God told the prophet, “My thoughts are

not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways. . . For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:8-9) One of the reasons our thoughts are inferior to God’s thoughts is because we can’t see past the view from our personal w indow. Our t houghts about race is formed by what’s been handed down to us through the personal window view of our parents, our culture, and bias news reporting. But God’s thoughts are encompassing. It covers the past and extends well into the future. He sees the whole story (good and bad, right and wrong) of every individual, family, and ethnic group where as we only see what we’ve been told. When we judge others based on our personal window view we get a distorted perspective of what truly is. The only way to resolve our race issue is to see each other through the creator’s eyes and live out His command to love all of humanity. For questions and/or comments, send an email to anna.a62@yahoo.com . Or you can write me at: Anna Caison, P.O. Box 529, Lansing, IL 60438.

Dear Dee, Lately I’ve been trying to date more. Most guys that I meet are at the gym where I work out, a few have asked me out, but due to my inexperience I usually turn them down. Because I have never been in a relationship and I know that makes me an easy target for men to try and take advantage of me. How do I separate a guy who only wants sex vs. a guy who is truly interested in me?

it’s not. Flattery will get you hurt if you don’t understand and stand for your selfworth. Be confident that you can wean out men that will waste your time by knowing “who” you are and “what” you want, and not settling for less. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known unto God. (Philippians 4:6) Dee Speaks…You Think! – About Life & Relationships

Dear Dunamis Woman, Out the gate, please let me affirm you as a Woman of Power; Dunamis Woman. Also, I want to inform you that majority of men approach you, because they are visually stimulated. If you are meeting these men at the gym, then I can speculate that your physic is attractive. If not to a certain degree, then you are working on it at the g ym. In other words, your efforts are very apparent, and that can be attractive alone. Now to answer your question, you have to remain powerful by discovering his interest; why and what is it about you that deems him worthy of his attraction. If a man can’t communicate his “Why” and “What” then you have to assist him in discovering it by a nswering your questions strictly applicable to you. Please don’t make dating complicated, because

CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: My son has a home for sale with a broker. The property was advertised on the Internet and a prospect from overseas contacted my son -- not the broker -- with an offer to purchase. The buyer claimed to be a U.S. citizen and in both the real estate and securities businesses. Should my son cancel the listing and sell to this overseas buyer?

900-1800 Retail or office space on Halsted St. Close to Ford and I-57 Express, plenty of parking. Secure building. Call Christina 773233-6778 or Ade 773-5173096

Answer: What buyer? Does anyone know if the buyer is qualified to make the purchase? Does the buyer exist? To cancel a listing because the broker’s ad ver t i s ement broug ht a re spon s e penalizes the broker for achieving exactly what he or she was asked to do, find a buyer. That’s unfair and not grounds to cancel a listing. Your son should instead have the buyer contact the broker. If the buyer wants the property then working through the broker should not be a problem. The broker will be able to provide a proper contract form, hold deposit money in an escrow account, arrange required inspections, etc. •••••••••••• Question : We recent ly boug ht what seemed to be a well maintained house. We didn’t get a home inspection and after being in the home two weeks, noticed that the ceiling sagged in the living room & was poorly patched. After having heavy rain fall for two days we noticed two leaky areas in the roof. Are the sellers liable

Falling Kingdoms by Morgan Rhodes

A nswer : Super ma rket s sel l eg gs i n plastic holders. If you look at & inspect the cartons you can see if the eggs are okay. If you don’t look, you can’t blame the supermarket. If the ceilings were badly patched, you could plainly see that there had been problems. The repairs were not hidden. In effect, you were on notice that questions should be asked. As a buyer you should have obtained a professional home inspection to find problems, including those that you might not see. As to the responsibility of the sellers, it depends on the jurisdiction where t he home wa s sold, what disclosures were made, and whet her or not the property was sold in “as is” condition. Also, in the past couple of seasons, some areas have experienced levels of rain not seen in decades -- and thus leaks and flooding not seen in years. Sellers are not responsible for freak future storms or the leaks they might cause.

*Dollar amount paid for tune-up will be applied as a credit towards repairs performed by Community Heating & Cooling Inc.

Cash buyers and real estate deals – facts and f ict ion. Somet imes t he t r ut h i s not w hat t he buyer of real estate wants to hear. Student Artists Win Best Group Project Award Eight South Suburban College (SSC) Art & Design students were presented with a municipal award from Tinley Park recently for their artistic bench entered in Tinley Park’s 13th annual Benches on the Avenue contest. Narita Sharma, Devin Walker, Kathleen De Jong, Shelby O’Hara, Natasha Swindle, Alexis Jannotta, Samantha Bynum and Nicholas Wyatt received the award for Best Group Project for their entry “The Marauder’s Bench.” Being part of a group project and sharing their love of the Harry Potter stories was the primar y motivation behind the students’ choice. The front depicts a well-known scene, while the back was designed to allow for different artists’ styles by using a gallery theme. The average American retires at about age 63, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau. If you enjoy your work, of course, you may want to go well beyond that age. But what if you don’t want to wait? Can you afford to retire early? Possibly – if you follow these suggestions: • Re s e a r c h t he c o s t s involved. What will you do during your retirement yea rs ? W i l l you t ravel the world or stay close to home? Will you downsize from your current home? How w i l l you pay for health care until you’re old enough for Medicare? You will need to answer these and other questions to determine how much you will need to sustain a comfortable lifestyle. • Invest more – and invest for g row t h. One big advantage in retiring at the usual age, or even later, is that it gives you more time to invest. But if you’re determined to retire early, you will almost certainly need to accelerate your investment rate – which, in practical terms, means y ou’ l l l i k e l y h a v e t o contribute more each year to your IR A and 401(k) or s i m i l a r e m p l o y e rsponsored retirement plan than if you were going to retire later on. Plus, you may have to “ratchet up” the growth potential of your investment portfolio. However, because growthor ie nt e d i nv e s t m e nt s typically are more volatile than other investments, you w i l l be ta k i ng on more risk than you might otherwise.

• Cut down your debt load. • Know the rules g ov e r n i n g r e t i r e me nt plan withdrawals. If you want to retire before age 59½ a nd beg i n ta k i ng distributions from your IRA or 401(k) plan, you w i l l gener a l ly be subject to a 10 % ea rly d i s t r i b u t i o n p e n a l t y, plus nor ma l i ncome taxes. (To withdraw your ea r n i ngs f rom a Rot h IRA tax and penalty free, you generally must have ow ned the account for at least f ive yea rs a nd have reached age 59½. You can withdraw your contributions at any time ta x a nd pena lt y f ree.) However, you may be able to avoid the 10% penalty if you take “substantially equal periodic payments,” w h ic h a r e c a lc u l at e d based upon your age and other factors. Once these distributions begin, they must continue for f ive years or until you reach age 59½, wh ichever is longer. Other rules apply to these distributions, so before ta k ing any, you will want to consult with your ta x and f inancia l professionals. Most importantly, do ever y t h ing ea rly: Pla n early, invest early (and don’t stop), a nd lower you r debt load e a rl y. Getting a jump on all these activities can go a long way toward turning your early retirement dreams into reality. Overcoming Your Credit Card Crisis The battle with credit card debt can be a constant struggle against high interest rates and monthly payments that never seem to make a dent in what you owe. How is it possible to make monthly credit card payments and never get anywhere? This problem is caused by high interest rates that eats up most of your payments. Even though you make your minimum payment, you don’t make much headway eliminating the debt. Luckily, there’s a way to find debt relief without incurring more debts. Using certified credit counseling like Consolidated Credit, you can get

professional advice to identify the right solution for your needs. A certified credit counselor can review your options to see which solution is best for you. You can qualify for lower interest rates or even eliminate them, while consolidating your credit card debt into one easy payment to get you out of debt faster. Every financial institution differs, but most people see a reduction of total payments by up to 30-50% as they pay off debt faster. Freedom from debt can become a reality!
