South Holland Police Checkpoint
Hip and Knee Replacement
Monday, September 26, 2016, the South Holland Police Department conducted a safety checkpoint in the Village of South Holland. This is an initiative designed to protect and save lives. The checkpoint operated from 12:00 to 3:30 a.m. in the area of 162nd and Ellis Avenue. The purpose of the checkpoint was to detect vehicles with faulty equipment, occupants’ use of seat safety belts, and valid driver’s licenses. The checkpoint had minimal impact on traffic flow and was highly visible with use of signage, marked patrol vehicles, and uniformed officers. This initiative also provided an opportunity for the South Holland Police Department to remind motorists to always wear a seat belt while operating a motor vehicle, and don’t text and drive. For additional information regarding upcoming planned checkpoints, contact the South Holland Police Department at 708-331-3131, option 2.

“My advice? Don’t put it off another day.”
I have been a fitness instructor in our community for nearly 40 years. Over the years I’ve had the wonderful opportunity to work with several people with various backgrounds, abilities, and goals. Unfortunately, arthritis is a condition that many of us have in common. Exercise and Aquatic Fitness is one way to relieve pain and delay disability, however more invasive treatments such as joint replacement is the only option for some people. Illinois has over 2.3 million people with physician diagnosed arthritis and there are more than 13,000 children in Illinois with Juvenile Arthritis (JA). I have been involved with the Arthritis Foundation for over 14 years, serving as an instructor, fitness trainer and volunteer advocacy ambassador. I am writing to insure that the candidates for elected office are aware of the impact of the over 100 types of arthritis and know that arthritis is the number one reason for disability. One in five civilians and one in three military personal have arthritis. Please support legislation that will increase research dollars for this debilitating disease affecting so many Americans and that will help find a cure. Also please consider joining the Bicameral Arthritis Caucus. Thank You, Cindy Copenhaver, LMT

He Did Not Sound Like A Clown WOODROW WILCOX On September 9, I was in Washington DC for the annual Family Research Cou nci l’s Va lues Voter Summit. I attend as a repor ter a nd gat hered in for mat ion for f ut ure stor ies about sen ior citizen issues. W h i le at t he event, I hea rd Dona ld Tr ump speak. Some news commentators call him a clown. But, he did not sound like a clown to me. I recorded the speech and was going to write about it from the standpoint of senior citizen issues in the speech. But, I think that a better thing to do would be to let a nyone hea r the speech w ithout my commentary. So, I posted the audio of that speech a t m y w e b s i t e w w w. WoodrowWilcox.com. It is in the “other” section of
the “audio” page. It seems to me t hat sma r t c a nd idates a nd their staff would want to post several speeches by a candidate in order to let voters hear the speeches w i t h ou t t h e f i l t e r o f ne w s me d ia, pu nd it s, commentators, or comedians. That would bypass the main media and reach potential voters directly. A n i nterest i ng bit of news t hat I lea rned wh i le attend ing t he weekend event is that Dr. A lveda K ing, t he niece of D r. Ma r t i n L ut her K ing Jr., now suppor ts D on a l d Tr u m p. Circle of Life for Clothing ARLO KALLEMEYN You k now t hat t he depa r t ment stores li ke Kohl’s and JC Penney sell clothes right? And every so often they change out all the racks of clothes depending on the season. After all we can’t expect people to buy wool coats in August or sleeveless T’s in February. They don’t just change the clothing racks according to t he s e a s on t h ou g h . T h e y change the racks to stay up with what is in fashion also. Now, I don’t know who decided that flannel plaid is back in fashion but it sure is. Now I just have to dig into the back of my closet for t hose shirts I saved since the 1980’s. People do buy a lot of clothes compared to the old days. Maybe it’s because walk-in-closets were all the rage during the last housing boom. You ca n ha ng enoug h clothes and shoes in one of these closets to cloth a small village – or host poker n ig ht w it h you r buddies. The garage and basement have nothing on these huge closets. Now even the biggest closet gets f i l led to capacity sooner or later. Then, the clothes start the journey on the next stop in their circle of life. Many get donated to a thrift store. One of the most popular thrift stores
in the area is Restoration Minist ries Thrif t Store in South Holland. They h ave r ack s a nd r ack s of clot h i ng t hat a re pract ica l ly bra nd new. Most started their life in a local department store. The one big difference is the price. At Restoration Minist ries Thrif t Store both the qualit y of the clothes and the low prices w i l l m a ke y ou sm i le. They have clot hing for men, women a nd k ids. In October, t hey have somet h i ng specia l - A BOGO coupon. A ll you power shoppers out there know that BOGO stands for Buy-One-G et-OneFree. That’s right - clip the coupon in this week’s Shopper and take it over to Restoration Ministries T h r i f t Store. I’m su re you will find something you like – and you will get to pick out a clothing item for f ree for each one you buy. Restoration Minist ries Thrif t Store sel l s ma ny ot her f i ne produc t s t hat may be just what you are looking for. Don’t forget to check out the treasures on the second f loor – you will be glad you climbed the stairs. They are located at 351 W. 162nd St. in South Holland with hours M-F 10-6 and Sat 10-5. Thornton Township High School D205 Taps Dr. Doss
The Board of Education of District 205 School Board recently appointed Dr. Jerry B. Doss to the position of Assistant Superintendent. This position will include oversight of Human Relations, as well as Community Relations. District 205 includes Thornwood, Thornton and Thornridge High Schools. School Board President Bernadette Lawrence commented, “Dr. Doss has been a positive and stabilizing influence in District 205. I appreciate his servant-based philosophy, and the use of his talents to help those around him reach their full potential. We are indeed fortunate to have Dr. Doss in the district, and serving as Assistant Superintendent. We look forward to his leadership as District 205 reaches new heights in serving our students and community.” Previously Doss was the Director of Community Relations overseeing the public relations, marketing and communication from District 205 to the surrounding community. While in his community relations role, Doss was instrumental in raising awareness regarding the many positive aspects of our three local high schools. A popular method of communication is the ‘Your Schools’ magazine that informs the community about important district news such as student programs, faculty, finance, and capital improvements to the school campuses. Under Doss’ direction the District 205 website was completely revamped. The community is welcome to view the updated website at www. district205.net for late breaking news and district updates. An important development in District 205 is the formation of the Outlook Academy. District 205, together with the Continuing Education Department of Chicago State University, have formed a partnership to provide post-high school students ages 17-21 with a pathway to complete the requirements for a high school diploma. This partnership will provide students with “one stop” access to both a high school diploma with an option to continue their education at Chicago State or other colleges and universities. Realizing that not every student will continue on to higher education, this program also offers career and workforce development. Brett Fickes and Patricia Fortier of District 205 were instrumental in fast-tracking this program with Chicago State University, and also obtaining the necessary funding from the federal Government and the State of Illinois. There are close to 200 students already enrolled in the popular Outlook Academy. Doss has a history of getting involved in organizations that make a difference. Jerry serves on the South Regional Advisory Board of Catholic Charities - located in Seton High School in South Holland. This office of Catholic Charities serves those in need from 31 south suburban Chicagoland communities. This regional office provides food, clothing, counseling, emergency funding, and access to all Catholic Charities assistance programs. Jerry remarked, “Catholic Charities helps people in need from all faiths. It is rewarding to serve, and to provide assistance to those who are struggling on a day-to-day basis.” Dr. Doss serves as a South Holland Business Association Board (SHBA) member and said, “I appreciate partnering with the surrounding business community. A strong business district results in a healthy school district.” Doss also serves as Executive Director of the District 205 Academic Enrichment Foundation. The purpose of the Foundation is Jerry B. Doss - Assistant Superintendent, School District 205 to enhance educational opportunities for District 205 students. The Foundation provides grants to teachers at the 3 high schools to encourage teacher and staff creativity, and to promote the school district as a center for parent involvement and community learning. A popular program that the foundation supports is the United Nations Summer Leadership Academy. This one of a kind program was created to provide middle school students with a globally based experience that develops critical thinking skills; an understanding of current and past issues affecting the local community and the world; and develop leadership skills for instituting positive change within the community. This is a community program offering an amazing selection of eight themed enrichment courses for a summer experience like no other in the south suburban area. The academy structure of the program gives students from mixed communities opportunities to be exposed to some of the best cultural, ethnic and international activities the world has to offer. Through this program, District 205 is preparing elementary school students for a bright future in high school and beyond. These programs are being implemented by the dedicated individuals of District 205 who are entrusted with the education of our children. Please check the district website at www.district205.net for more information. Fo r s a l e : 1 9 9 6 C r ow n Victoria, 115K miles, aluminum wheels, special ignition lock when running. DEE COLLINS Dear Dee, I have a male friend who is a virgin. Recently, he asked me if I could be his first because he wanted to be intimate with someone he trusts. Though we have talked about being together we are not in a relationship. I know that finding a man who is a virgin is very rare and being that I am one myself; he is the only guy that I’ve ever thought about being intimate. The possibility of finding another man who’s a virgin is very slim. However, I’m not sure if I’m truly ready to have sex. Choosing to be intimate with someone is a big step and I don’t want to make the wrong decision. How should I go about handling this situation?

High School Chess Players Invited to Compete at Challenge Local K-12 student chess players gathered at Purdue University Northwest’s Hammond campus on Sept. 24 for the first annual PNW High School Chess Challenge. The event was sponsored by the university’s Communication & Creative Arts Department in collaboration with the School City of Hammond. Roach, who has been playing chess recreationally si nce he wa s i n t h i rd g rade, proposed host i ng t he tournament to introduce a younger generation of students to the local branch of Purdue. “The university should be a cultural center for the community,” Roach said. “We want to encourage young people to play chess as well as get local high schoolers interested in college. We hope t hey consider Purdue Northwest when deciding where they want to go.” Volunteer Cindy Murphy, who organized and ran the Chess Cha l lenge, ha nd les tou r na ment log ist ics a nd fundraising for Hammond schools in addition to mentoring coaches and their teams. “Ba se d on t he soc ioe c onom ic demog r aph ic s of Michael Jordan delux milk cap game, complete, new in box, $1 ea; Ron Santo bobble head, $10; Nascar bobbleheads, $2 ea; football bobblehead, $2. 708-8909234

Director of Talent Development & Special Programs for the School City of Hammond Mary Beth Nickolaou, who oversees Hammond schools’ academic teams and helps coordinate opportunities for high-ability students, was also in attendance. Nickolaou applauds Murphy for her contributions to the local chess community. “Hats off to Cindy Murphy for coordinating the event to help establish the connection between high school and college for our young chess players,” she said. “It shows students that college is something to start thinking about now,” she said. Butler University student David Vogel also volunteered at the event as a representative of the College Bound Scholarship program, which provides full-ride scholarships to select high school graduates. Vogel is a former member of Wilber Wright Middle School’s chess club. “I like coming back to volunteer,” said Vogel, who is now attending pharmacy school. “I get to play in the tournament, which gives me the opportunity to talk to young people about college life and helps get them thinking about higher education.”

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: Long story short, I came home from vacation to major water damage in my home. It seems that my second-floor toilet tank cracked and water ran for almost a week. When the demolition crew was taking out walls they discovered that there was a fire in our home, at one time. We have lived in our home since 1992 and during the selling process there was no mention of there being a fire in the house. There needs to be some insulation and drywall work that is not covered under the water damage. The previous owner of this house was the real estate agent. Do we have any recourse in this situation? Answer: The first questions an attorney for the former owners would probably ask would go like this: You have lived in this house for 15 years. How does anyone know that you did not have a fire at some point in your residency and that in making repairs you did not include insulation? How do you know the agent-owner was responsible? Did anyone else own the property? Could the fire have occurred while the home was under construction?
Do you know for a fact that there was insulation in place when the property was originally built? What if the broker hired a contractor to do repair work after the fire and the contractor -- without the owner’s knowledge -- did not install the insulation? How many of us, after all, break down walls to look for insulation? What, exactly, are the damages here? Were your heating and air conditioning bills higher than they should have been? How much higher? What were the disclosure requirements in your state 15 years ago? Given the time, cost and irritation of a lawsuit, why not just fix the damage and be grateful that much of the cost for a better wall is covered by insurance. GOD WITH US
www.myshopper.biz/columnists/
“God Is With Us” ANNA M. CAISON with Him. Just as my grandmother’s and mother’s faith in God nurtured in me a faith in God through their experiences; God is also nurturing faith in my siblings, children, and grandchildren through my experiences with Him. As I write this, I’m reminded of other heroes of faith with shared experiences similar to that of Abraham and Isaac. Elijah and Elisha. Elisha was Elijah’s protégé. God proved He was with Elisha as He was with Elijah through similar experiences. The same with Moses and Joshua. Joshua was Moses’ protégé. God appeared to Joshua as He did to Moses. He appeared to Moses in a burning bush and to Joshua as a warrior. But the call was the same, “Take off your shoes for the place where you stand is holy ground.” W hose shoes have you found yourself walking in? Could it be that God is reaching out to you, to initiate friendship with you? For questions and/or comments, send an email to anna.a62@yahoo.com . Or you can write me at: Anna Caison, P.O. Box 529, Lansing, IL 60438.
Sometimes the only way we know God is with us is when we find ourselves walking in the shoes of those who’ve gone before us. The first time I wrote on this subject I told how my daughter developed a personal faith in God when she found herself walking in my shoes, when she made the decision to move to New York to reunite with her estranged husband. I’ve come to realize that “walking in the shoes of those who’ve gone before us” is not confined to just children following pa rent s. It a l so i nclude s sibl i ngs following siblings. On December 28th I received this text from my baby sister. “We really are bookends, aren’t we…? oldest girl/ you ngest g i rl ; t wo daug hter s most like momma; identical breast cancer s u r v i v or s ; f a c e d w it h s a m e w or k challenge. Think God is trying to tell us something?” Yes! God is establishing a pattern of His Presence and His Faithfulness to our family that He is with us! He is preserving Him a present day circle of witnesses to encourage us in our walk

Overcoming Your Credit Card Crisis The battle with credit card debt can be a constant struggle against high interest rates and monthly payments that never seem to make a dent in what you owe. How is it possible to make monthly credit card payments and never get anywhere? This problem is caused by high interest rates that eats up most of your payments. Even though you make your minimum payment, you don’t make much headway eliminating the debt. Luckily, there’s a way to find debt relief without incurring more debts. Using certified credit counseling like Consolidated Credit, you can get
professional advice to identify the right solution for your needs. A certified credit counselor can review your options to see which solution is best for you. You can qualify for lower interest rates or even eliminate them, while consolidating your credit card debt into one easy payment to get you out of debt faster. Every financial institution differs, but most people see a reduction of total payments by up to 30-50% as they pay off debt faster. Freedom from debt can become a reality!

Thornton Township Hosted a Hispanic Heritage Month Event Juan Carlos Linares stood out looking at the crowd of adults and children empowering them to learn more about their rich Hispanic culture and become active in social issues and elections. “Our Hispanic population can do so much to better the quality of life for ourselves and our children,” said Linares, guest speaker at the annual Thornton Township Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration. “We have a great history and culture, and it’s important for us to take a larger role in the future. A nd Thornton Tow nship does a great job of community building and offering great programs and services to many people in the south suburbs.” The event, hosted by Thornton Township Supervisor Frank M. Zuccarelli and the Human Relations Commission, featured authentic food, culture, history, music and dancing at the township, 333 E. 162nd St. in South Holland. Linares, executive director of the Latin United Community Housi ng A ssociat ion, a nd h is w i fe, Mon ica Tor resLinares, spoke to the crowd about the importance of social justice, environmental health and affordable houses. His organization LUCHA serves more than 7,000 families each year helping them with housing, financing, legal questions and best practices for neighborhood development. “I have a passion for the quality of life issues that affect so many people,” said Linares. “This is a time where people are struggling and they need guidance and help from affordable housing to residents who have to deal with the environmental impact of power plants shutting down in their neighborhoods without companies cleaning up. It leaves residents open to poor water quality and pollution.” T he event a lso feat u red Mex ica n Fol k lore da ncers, magicians, the Holy Cross/Immaculate Heart of Mar y Marimba Ensemble and a special tribute to Lionel Valencia, a community advocate. Zuccarelli said the event was an opportunity for people to celebrate various cultures and bring people together for a family-friendly program. Creating a variety of diverse programs and celebrating cultures has been one of the man initiatives of the Human Relations Commission and Thornton Township. “We have to celebrate the many cultures we have in this country. We have to appreciate the variety of cultures that make our communities great,” said Zuccarelli. “Thornton Township strives to give our residents a variety of fun and educational program throughout the year.” Linares, whose father is Guatemalan and mother is from Peru, said he grew up seeing poverty in their countries as well as income inequality in the United States. He wanted to devote his future career to helping others. He chose to speak at the Thornton Township event because he believes information much be spread throughout the county about essential issues not just in Chicago. “Cook County is the second largest county in the United States and we often don’t focus on the areas that are outside of the city,” said Linares, who is also chairman of the Illinois Advisory Committee on the U.S. on Civil Rights. “That is why it’s important for these kinds of events to happen in the south suburbs and other surrounding municipalities.” Thornton Township is the largest township in Illinois and is made up of all or part of 17 south suburban communities. Chicago Dance Crash Makes GSU The First Stop of New National Tour Audiences in Chicago’s Sout h la nd w i l l be t he f i rst to ex per ience a contempora r y ta ke on t he classic struggle between right and w rong, this time depicted in the form of hip hop or street dance. GSU’s Center for Performing Arts will welcome Chicago Da nce Cra sh back to its stage to perform the dance theatre piece Evil and Good on October 22 at 8 p.m. “We’re excited to bring this Chicagobased company back to showcase their versatility, thanks to a partnership with the Chicago Community Trust. Gover nors State Un iversit y is t he per fec t place for C h ic ago Da nce Crash to start their national tour. We welcome the community to the stage all the time, and that’s really what they’re doing with this piece,” says the Center’s Executive Director Lana Rogachevskaya. Street dance originated outside of dance studios in public spaces such as block parties and at nightclubs, evolving into a sort of urban folk dance, with hip hop making its mark on pop culture through music and media. Fans of modern and contemporary styles will recognize and appreciate Chicago Dance Crash’s interpretations. Chicago Dance Crash Artistic Director Jessica Deahr teamed up with Culture Shock Chicago’s Christopher Courtney to conceptua lize and choreograph t he new work. Dea hr said, “We’ve been getting a lot of requests lately to feature the street dance portion of our aesthetic a little more. That, and I’ve been wanting to work on movement t h a t do e s n’t h a v e t o f or w a r d a particular plot point or device to keep choices more in the moment. So it should be fun.” The seven company dancers include D a v id I n g r a m , KC B e v i s , Br i a n Humpherys, Kaitlin Webster (Rehearsal

Financial Advice Column
Vote for Smart Investment Moves BOB KRYGSHELD i n November. Instead, follow these investment strategies: • Stay invested. If you stop investing when the market is down in an effort to cut your losses, you may miss the opportunity to participate in the next rally – and the early stages of a ra lly are t y pica lly when the biggest gains occur. • Diversify. By spreading your dolla rs a mong a n a r ray of i nv e s t ment s , s uc h a s stocks, bonds and other investments, you can help reduce the possibility of your portfolio taking a big hit if a market downturn primarily affected just one type of financial asset. Keep in m ind t houg h, that diversification can’t g ua ra ntee prof it s or protect against all losses. • Stay within your risk tolerance. Investing a l w a y s i nv ol v e s r i s k , but you’l l probably be more suc c e s sf u l (a nd less stressed out) if you don’t stray beyond your individual risk tolerance. At the same time, if you invest too conservatively, you might not achieve the growth potential you need to reach your goals. So you will need to strike an appropriate balance. • Forget about ch a si ng “hot ” stock s. Many so-called “experts” encourage people to invest in today’s “hot” stocks. But by the time you hear about them, these stocks – if they were ever “hot” to begin with – have probably already cooled off. More importantly, they might not have been suitable for your needs, any way. In any case, there’s really no “short cut” to investment success. Elections – and even presidents – come and go. But when you “vote” for solid investment moves, you ca n help you rsel f ma ke prog ress towa rd your financial goals.
The presidential election is little more than a month away. Like all elections, this one has generated considerable interest, and, as a citizen, you may well be following it closely. But as an investor, how much should you be concerned about the outcome? Probably not as much as you might think. Historically, the financial ma rkets have done well – and done poorly – under both Democratic and Republican ad m i n ist rat ions. A lso, ma ny factors a f fecting investment performance have little or nothing to do w it h t he occupa nt of t h e W h i t e Hou s e . Consequently, no one can claim, with any certainty, t hat one ca nd idate is going to be “better for the markets” t han anot her one. Still, this isn’t to say that any given presidential adm inist rat ion w i l l have no effect at all on investors. For example, a president could propose cha nges to t he laws governing investments, and if Congress passes those laws, investors could be affected. But in looking at the broader picture, there’s not much evidence that a pa r t icu la r president is goi ng to a f fect t he overa l l ret u r n of you r i nv e s t me nt p or t f ol io. A s ment ione d a b ov e, many factors – corporate earnings, interest rates, foreig n a f fa i rs, even natural disasters – can a nd w ill inf luence t he financial markets. But in evaluating a president’s potent ia l ef fect on you r i nvest ments, you a lso need to consider somet h i ng else : Ou r political system does not r e a d i l y ac c om mo d at e radical restructuring of any kind. So it’s difficult f or a n y p r e s i d e nt t o implement huge policy shifts – and that’s actually good for t he f ina ncia l ma rkets, which, by t hei r nat u re, d isl i ke uncertainty, chaos and big changes. *** CESAR MILLAN BRINGS HIS ‘DOG W HISPER ER’ TO CHIC AGO : T he hugely popular canine behaviorist,
T V’s “Dog W hisperer w it h Cesa r Millan” and “Cesar 911” is touring the country, (7 cities including Chicago) with his 22 year old son Andre, for his upcoming television series (February 2017) Nat Geo Wild, “Cesar Millan’s Dog Nation.” He landed in Calumet Park on Chicago’s East Side on Sunday, September 25th, 2016 and was greeted like a rock star! Cell phone cameras recorded his ever y move and word and securit y had to keep us from trying to get a ‘selfie’ and autograph. He came to Chicago thanks to the wonderful letter written to him by a founder of t he Sout heast Chicago Dog Pa rk C om m it te e, Rosema r y McNulty Hurley, who outlined what the group was trying to do (get the city and county to give them a plot of land in a forest preserve or Calumet Park for a dog park). Charmed by the letter, Cesar noted that “one time I heard that Chicago does a lot for the (dog) community and I wanted to be a part of it. I want my kids to be part of a movement helping the community. I think as a family we can offer our knowledge, or dedication, our passion, our love to dogs.” It was ‘love fest’ for sure. Come back anytime Cesar! *** WEST HAMMOND-EARLY HISTORY OF CALUMET CITY: This will be the topic of discussion at the next general meeting of the Calumet City Historical Society, Sunday, October 9th, 2016, at t he societ y headqua r ters, 760 Wentworth Avenue, Calumet City, Il Events start 2 p.m. with a general meeting and Guest speaker will be Professor Joseph Bigott, at 3 p.m.who is a n aut hor of “From Cottage to Bungalow,” and a Calumet City native. Many of the founding veterans have passed away but those who remain are ardent fans of the group and stay connected and in touch for every milestone, as this 30th anniversary party was. One of the most popular of the veterans is a man who ow ns a popular bar on Chicago’s East Side, “The Shed” on 106th street, which was (and still is) a hangout for returning Vietnam Vets from the beginning. His name is Rene’ Nawodylo and this reporter remembers writing about him in the late, great Daily Calumet back in the day. Pictured here are some of the veterans and their significant others during the party and Calumet City’s Rich Dominiak, (he, formerly “Elwood” of the Blues Brothers Tribute Band) singing the Vietnam Vet’s ‘national a nt hem’ “We gotta Get Outa This Place” by the Animals. Needless to say the evening was a blast! A good time was had by all. JoElleyn and JJ Kelley’s is a fabulous, fun place where all are welcome! Drop by and see for yourself!
