Patti’s All-American Raised $4,000 For Cancer Society
CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: I put my house up for sale. My broker used a lockbox. Another broker brought by some buyers with an interest in the house. One of the buyers climbed on the roof to inspect it. W hat would happen if he fell? Can he sue me? Answer: Anyone can sue anyone else. That said, there would hopefully have to be some merit to the climber’s claim and you certainly have arguments in your favor. The idea of showing a house means that a prospective purchaser has the oppor tunit y to v iew rooms, peek in closets, check basements and attics, look in cabinets and wander outside. The actions of the visiting buyer does not extend to behavior outside the realm of either reason or common sense. For example, if the buyer had a sudden desire to carefully examine the innards of an
electrical service box with his hand and screwdriver, that’s not a problem which a reasonable and sensible person could anticipate. Check with your insurance agent and attorney concerning coverage and legal matters about your concerns. If the buyer has concerns about the roof, they can be addressed with a written purchase offer that requires an inspection by a licensed and insured professional home inspector or roofing specialist. The week of September 25 t hrough October 1, Patt i’s A l l-A mer ica n ra ised $4,000.00 to help with the fight against ca ncer. Gy m nasts or da ncers had t he oppor tunit y to per for m for wa rd rol ls, cartwheels, back handsprings, or turns. Their teachers recorded how many they did and family and friends donated based on the number of skills they were able to perform or they could donate a flat rate. Additional donations were collected at the front desk through a “drop box” on the front counter. In the past, Patti’s All-American students and staff raised over $10,000 for the blind for the Lake County Cooperative and over $55,000 was raised by gymnastics schools all
over the country for breast cancer research, organized by Patti Komara, President of Patti’s All-American. They have also raised add it iona l f u nds for ot her non-prof it organizations throughout the years. Patti’s A ll-American celebrates their 47th business anniversary this year. Hammer toes are actually a curling of the toes. Sometimes these are flexible and can be straightened with manipulation, or fixed which means they are always curled with arthritic changes that don’t allow straightening. Many times corns are found on the tops of these toes. Surgery can be performed to straighten these toes or occasional trimming of the corns can alleviate some of the pain. If you have any questions concerning hammer toes or any other problems, please stop by or call my office during office hours.

When then, Senator Barack Obama ran for the office of President of the United States, he didn’t run as an AfricanAmerican with a Pro-Black Agenda. He ran as an American with an American Agenda. However, a large segment of congress didn’t see him as an American or their Commander in Chief. They saw him as a black boy sitting in the seat of power and authority that belong to white men only. On the night Obama gave his acceptance speech after winning the 2008 election, this segment of congress gat hered a nd took a vow t hat t hey would not participate in any bipartisan legislation and would use their power to block everything this new president would try to accomplish even if doing so led to a wea ken economy a nd a government shutdown. There’s a double reason why the party of Donald Trump is silent about his racist rants against American Minorities. (1) It diverts attention from the real reason for America’s domestic problems; Political and Corporate Corruption, and (2) they’re hoping his bigoted speeches will create enough racial tension among Americans that will never again allow a Black person or any other minority to be elected to the office of United States President. roots stem from southern retaliation against former slaves after slavery was abolished. Its goal was to prevent Blacks from integrating into American Society as equa l citizens. Today, t he school to prison pipeline, and the diverting of local, state and federal dollars away from Black communities have replaced the fire bombings and massacres of the past (Atlanta, GA 1906; Greenwood-Tulsa, OK 1921; Rosewood, Florida 1923). America needs to examine its heart. Do we want to continue on this path of destruction by dividing ourselves along racial lines? Or do we want to be made whole by promoting healing through dismantling institutional racism and removing politicians who practice white supremacy? The Apostle Paul issued a warning regarding the racial and religious tension between the Jews and Gentiles of his day. “If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other” (Galatians 5:15/NIV). The point is this; if we continue to divide and discriminate, we will end up destroying ourselves. For questions and/or comments, send an email to anna.a62@yahoo.com . In Illinois, October is College Changes Ever ything® (CCE) Month, a campaign launched by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) to address the change to “early FAFSA” and assist students who will be completing college applications at the same time they are filing financial aid forms. The Free Application for Federal Student A id (FA FSA) is t he for m used to apply for a ll federa l and some state financial aid; filing it is an important first step to maximizing financial aid. This year, students will be able to file their 2017-18 beginning October 1, 2016, instead of having to wait until January, as in previous years. Because some financial aid programs— i nclud i ng t he state’s Moneta r y Awa rd Progra m (M A P gra nt) –a re awa rded on a f irst-come f irst-ser ved basis, eligible students should file their FAFSAs as soon as possible after October 1st in order to have the best chance of receiving funding. Students should check with their college for all school-specific deadlines. During CCE Month, ISAC will partner w it h schools and communities to help students navigate these changes, and will offer support for students and families with both college application and FAFSA completion.

“The college application and financial a id process ca n be over whel m i ng, particularly for first-generation students who don’t have a n i m med iate fa m i ly member who attended college,” said Eric Zarnikow, ISAC executive director. “Now that all of these activ ities are ta k ing place in the fa ll, it’s even more important that students have access to free services that will help them apply to colleges that fit their needs and goals, and access all the financial aid for which they are eligible. Providing students with the information and assistance they need to make more informed choices about college and financial aid can help minimize their student debt, and maximize their chances for completing a degree or certificate program.” M a n y of t h e c o l l e g e a p p l i c a t i on activities and FAFSA completion workshops a re s upp or te d a nd /or c onduc te d by the ISACorps, a group of recent college g raduates work i ng statew ide who a re extensively trained in assisting students with planning, applying, and paying for college. Overcoming Your Credit Card Crisis The battle with credit card debt can be a constant struggle against high interest rates and monthly payments that never seem to make a dent in what you owe. How is it possible to make monthly credit card payments and never get anywhere? This problem is caused by high interest rates that eats up most of your payments. Even though you make your minimum payment, you don’t make much headway eliminating the debt. Luckily, there’s a way to find debt relief without incurring more debts. Using certified credit counseling like Consolidated Credit, you can get
professional advice to identify the right solution for your needs. A certified credit counselor can review your options to see which solution is best for you. You can qualify for lower interest rates or even eliminate them, while consolidating your credit card debt into one easy payment to get you out of debt faster. Every financial institution differs, but most people see a reduction of total payments by up to 30-50% as they pay off debt faster. Freedom from debt can become a reality!

Financial Advice Column
Are You On Track to Meet Your Financial Goals? BOB KRYGSHELD October is Financial Pla n n i ng Mont h. A nd now that you know it’s Financial Planning Month (just in case you didn’t k now before), why not take the opportunity to determine if you’re on the right path toward meeting your financial goals? Consider taking these steps: • Identify your goals. To k now if you’re ma k ing prog re s s tow a rd you r go a l s , y ou f i r s t h av e t o id e nt i f y t h e m . O f c ou r s e, you’l l h ave a variety of goals in life, such as helping pay for your children’s college educations. More t ha n likely, though, your most i mpor t a nt long-ter m financial goal is to build enough resources to enjoy the retirement lifestyle you’ve envisioned. But we all have different ideas for how we want to spend our retirement years. Some of us may want to stay close to home, volunteering and pu rsu i ng ou r hobbies, while others want to visit the vineyards of Bordeaux or explore the pyramids of Egypt. So, name your goa ls a nd, as much as possible, put a price tag on them. Once you know about how much you r ret i rement is goi ng to cost, you can create an investment strategy that may ultimately provide you with the income you will need. • Don’t u nderest i mate your cost of living. Even a f ter you’ve ident if ied some of your retirement goals, and estimated their costs, you still haven’t developed a complete picture of your future cost of living. You also need to take into account other potential major expenses, s uc h a s he a lt h c a r e . Once you’re 65, you’ll get Medicare, but that won’t cover a ll your medica l costs – and it might cover on ly a t iny por t ion of those expenses connected w it h l on g-t e r m c a r e , such as a nursing home stay or services provided by a home health aide. A
financial professional can help you explore specific methods of dealing with these types of long-term care costs. • Locate “gaps” – and work to fill them. After you’ve h a d y ou r i nv e s t m e nt strateg y in place for a while, you may see that some “gaps” exist. Is your portfolio not growing as fast as it should to help you reach your goals? If not, you may need to review your asset allocation to make sure it is aligned with your risk tolerance and portfolio objective. Do you find that you own too ma ny of t he sa me t y pes of i nvest ment s ? This overconcentration could be harmful to you if a downturn affects one particular asset class, and you own too much of that asset. To help prevent t h i s f rom happen i ng , be sure to diversify your dol la rs across a ra nge of investment vehicles. Keep in mind, though, that diversification can’t g ua r a nte e a prof it or protect against all losses. • Protect yourself – and your family. Saving for your ideal retirement is certainly a worthy goal, but you have other ones – such as providing for your family in case you aren’t around, or if you become ill or incapacitated and can’t work for a while. That’s why you will need adequate life insurance, and possibly disabilit y i n s u r a n c e , t o o. You r employer may of fer you both these types of coverage as an employee benefit, but it might not be enough – so you may want to explore private coverage as well. Fi na nc ia l Pla n n i ng Month will come and go. But by following the above s u g ge s t ion s , y ou c a n create some strategies that will bring you a lifetime of benefits. MIKE BUDER Real estate and politics just don’t mix. With the ver y exc it i ng ele c t ion season upon us, t hose sel lers a nd soon-to-be sellers out there need to take a moment to think it over before they put or allow to be put a political sign in their front yard next to t heir “for sa le” sign. I ca n spea k from experience – real estate and politics don’t mix! No w d on’t g e t m e w rong…do exerc i se your right to support the c a nd idate or pol it ic a l part y t hat you want to w i n t he elec t ion. Ju st don’t do it in the front yard of the house you are tr y ing to sell. This has nothing to do with whom you support, why or for how long. This has to do with: do you want to do everything you can to sell your home? This is not a tirade about political correctness, or who is left, right or wrong. It has to do with looking at the basic political leanings of the U.S. voting public in 2012. In 2012 65,455,010 voted democrat and 60,771,703 voted republica n. That breaks down as roughly 54% one way a nd 47% t he ot her way. So a sk

yourself t his quest ion: do you rea l ly wa nt to alienate roughly half of the voting public, and lets take an assumptive leap here, buying population w hen t he y pu l l up to see your home? (Or very possibly not see it) True stor y : I have l iter a l l y h a d a C h ic a g o B e a r s fan walk out of a Packer Fa ns home because of the f lags, pennants and contraband. Silly right? People a re passionate. Don’t give them a reason to be passionate against your home before t hey even set foot in it. As a sel ler, you wa nt to t r y to appe a l to 10 0 % of the buyers in your price range. While 100% is not realistic, do not give any one person (it only takes one) a rea son to wa l k away without giving your property a fair shake.
