Are You Smarter Than Your Neighbor Trivia Challenge Do you know someone that claims to be smarter than their neighbor? This would be a great event for those who sit at home and answer questions from Jeopardy, critique TV commercials and enjoy sharing their knowledge and wisdom among friends and relatives. Trivia questions range from anatomy, science, health, historical places and events, commercials, movies, performers, fun facts, headliners and more. Your neighbor can be on the block or in Dolton, Calumet City, South Holland, Harvey and Chicago. There’s already teams registered stating they are smarter than Dolton. What do you say? Interested people form a four member team and if a winner, teams receive (4) $25 gift cards. Additionally we are collecting non-perishable food items that will be donated to a Dolton food pantry and donators will receive a free gift while supplies last. The reward is two-fold, bragging rights and supporting the less fortunate. It’s a win-win for all! The date is Saturday, October 24th at the Dolton Library 14037 Lincoln Avenue in Dolton. Trivia Challenge 12:00-3:00 p.m. The event is hosted by Educational Institute w w w. educationalinstitute752.com and supported by private businesses, service agencies and individuals. Competitor team member and spectators fee is $12 and both must preregister by October 17th with a non-refundable registration fee of $12 per person which includes food. Please contact Jenice for questions and additional details at (708) 522-1166.

Seton Academy recently along with the Museum of Science & Industry took the school on an in-house field trip – live! – to the operating room at Advocate Christ Medical Center. While the surgical team performed an open heart bypass procedure, Seton Academy and Christ Our Savior Catholic School students asked questions about the surgery, which included a heart valve replacement, and the roles of each surgical team member. Students learned about the patient’s risk factors, diagnosis and treatment. The medical professionals also provided tips on keeping their hearts healthy and learned of career options in the OR. In addition, students were given a Live from the Heart Investigation Journal as a guide throughout the surgery to take notes and sketch details of the procedure. Easley Painting & Staining. There will also be a closing reception for t he artist on Tuesday, October 20th at 1:00 p.m. The Dorothea Thiel Gallery is located on the 4th Floor of SSC’s Main Campus. Samples of Songero’s work may be v iewed at w w w.songero.com. T he paintings and drawings are inspired by and reflect abstract expressionism and stain painting. The work reflects upon the relationship between viewer and the material essence of the painted image without need for second person. A native born Chicago “southsider,” Songero also attended Northern Illinois University where he studied as a teacher and painter, and earned both Bachelor’s and Master’s of Fine Arts Degrees. He subsequently studied and

Songero made a life changing move leaving the art world disenchanted with the “hype and faddish world that art had become.” Songero descended into seclusion for almost thirty years only to return when prompted by friends, and a dealer and art promoter persuaded him to begin exhibiting his work once again. He has held a studio and continued to paint in his signature style in Chicago. He has taken elements of the New York school to move his individual vision a nd ex pression of act ion pa int ing t h roug h a pou red tech n ique a nd signature style. Natural Treatment and Prevention for Common Cold ANNA CONIGLIO, ND Thaddeus Jones Illinois State Rep. 29th District
“I am excited about the direction of the 29th district,” Jones said. “Local businesses, residents and community leaders have shown an amazing desire to share input on how we can work together to improve our neighborhoods. Although, I am not satisfied with the stalemate in Springfield, I am willing to work diligently with leaders at the capitol to bring back the resources we need.” As the vice-chairman of the Labor and Commerce Committee, chairman of the Community College Affordability Committee and a member the Appropriation Committees’ for Public Safety and Higher Education, Jones has worked to bring back nearly $38 million in state resources to local schools, municipalities and businesses. In Springfield, Jones has worked to implement fiscally responsible practices in the budget making process, support policies that help local employers create and retain good paying jobs, ensure that our schools receive the funding they need to meet children’s academic and extracurricular needs, and promote legislation that will effectively combat gang violence and keep communities safe. “What’s happening right now in our communities and across the state requires a unified response from legislators, community leaders and every day residents,” said Jones. “I have hosted several events to gather input from the community and I am committed to being a strong voice for the issues we decide as a community are important.” The upcoming primary election will be held on Tuesday, March 15, 2016. Jones has represented the 29th representative district since 2011. He is the founder and executive officer of the Jones Foundation and a member of the Calumet City Library Board. He received a B.A. from Loyola University Chicago and lives in Calumet City with his family.

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: I have owned my present house for just about one year but found another that I really like. I can’t afford both, and I don’t know how fast I can sell my house or if I even can due to only owning for such a short time. What should I do? Answer: Rea l estate is a commodit y best held for several years. The odds are overwhelming that you will take a beating on the first house because it has only been owned for “about one year.” Home sa les have slowed in many markets. If you’re in a slowing market you may not be able to get any more than what you originally paid for the property. However, you paid more than the original sale price, because you also paid money to close. Also, when you sell you will have expenses to market and close your home. If you get less than your purchase price the situation will be even worse. T he new house may sou nd ver y attractive to you, but the economics are unlikely to be in your favor. Can you accept a loss? How much? Call your broker to help get these questions answered. Question: My boyfriend and I are selling his house. We had a couple come and look at it and they were very interested. They Calumet City 2 bdrm. Apt. Stove & refrigerator, $650/ mo + $650 Dep. started the whole process and were preapproved for our asking price. A purchase agreement was signed and everything was on a fast pace go ahead. Then the deal was canceled. We called the couple interested in our house and the women stated they broke up. Can they just back out with a purchase agreement signed? I mean we almost put a down payment on an apartment. Answer: That the buyers broke up is not a contractual issue. The issue instead is whether they can withdraw from the agreement w ithout penalt y based on some clause or contingency within the contract. It’s possible that you may be entitled to retain their deposit, depending on how the agreement is worded and the reason for the withdrawal. The concept behind The Towle Youth Theater Ensemble is to allow the youth participation in theater production, but not necessarily a role in each show presented. With the diverse range of talent selected to be in TYTE, the Ensemble is cast from on-stage, technical, administrative and marketing duties as appropriate. The overall mission is to build a team of theater artists and leaders, not just actors. It is the goal of this program to encourage participation in the overall process of creating theater, not just being in a particular show. The Towle staff believes that this process will bring more value to the participants, to their creative process and ultimately to each production. The Towle holds auditions twice a year and will be seeking enthusiastic students with the most drive, dedication and commitment to the Ensemble as a whole. The Towle Theater is located in historic dow ntow n Ha mmond at 5205 Hohma n Avenue. Free, well-lit, secured parking is available off of Fayette Street only steps away from the back entrance or in the parking lot directly across the street from the theater on Hohman Avenue.

The Center is a lso celebrating its 20t h anniversary, and is pleased to welcome this iconic tribute to the stage. PHILADANCO is premiering three new programs. The company will perform its signature work “Enemy Behind the Gates,” by the explosive dance stylist and former Ailey dancer Christopher Huggins. This is a work that was inspired by enemies that live within our midst. They look like you…They act like you…They live like you, but they are not one of you. The program will also include the musical genius of Nina Simone in Matthew. Known as the ‘High Priestess of Soul,’ Simone’s seductive and hypnotic style will be reflected in the dance. The second half of the show includes excerpts from the Apollo Theater’s 2013 production honoring the “king of funk”
“Choices” 2 ANNA M. CAISON I’ve gotten a few disappointed remarks about the article “Choices” I wrote a few weeks ago regarding the county clerk in Kentucky. One friend even accused me of writing my opinion instead of God’s Word. From Genesis to Revelation, God has always given man the choice to obey Him or reject Him. God desires relationship w ith us. He doesn’t want puppets or robots that He can control and make them comply to His will. He wants it to be our choice to either serve him or not. Romans 13:1-7; Titus 3:1; 1Peter 2:1314; and Matt. 22:15-22 (key verse 21) commands us to obey civil authority. All civil authorities are God ordained and functions as His minister. And although Acts 4:18-29 and Acts 5:29 are regarding religious laws, the point is when the law forces us to sin against God we are to obey God rather than man. The dilemma with the Kentucky Clerk Kim Davis is that the law is not forcing her to sin against God. The law has even granted her exemption from issuing same sex license because of her faith in God. Kim Davis went to jail and will more than likely return to jail because she wants to take away the lawful right of same sex couples to marry. She wants the law to protect her right to live as she believes, but deny the right of those who believe different from her.

Romans 1:18-31 clearly states that same sex relationships are outside of God’s plan for humanity. It also states that because men (and women) chose sexual perversion over God, He (God) “gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men leaving the natural use of the women, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due. And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased (reprobate) mind, to do those things which are not fitting;” (verses 26-28). Since God has allowed those who reject Him to live as they choose to live, who are we to deny them that right? Are we greater than God? Instead of trying to take away their freedom of choice that has been granted by both God and the law, we should be proclaiming the Gospel of Christ which is the power of God to salvation and deliverance from same sex lifestyles and every other vice of the flesh. Humane Society Calumet Area to Host National Feral Cat Day Humane Society Calumet Area will host a free event where participants can construct a feral cat shelter on October 16. The event is one of hundreds taking place across the country in honor of National Feral Cat Day, a day to call for an end to the killing of cats in animal control pounds and shelters, the leading documented cause of death for cats in the United States. The event will be held at Paws Resale Shoppe, 8149 Ken nedy Ave, Hig h la nd, Ind. beginning at 5:30 p.m. HSCA will be providing instructions on how to build a feral cat shelter, as well as information about feral cats and Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR). Attendees can bring their own supplies and create a feral cat shelter to take home. HSCA also w ill have supplies on hand, donated by Home Depot in Schererville, Ind. Attendees can use these supplies to create and donate a shelter to be distributed to HSCA’s feral cat caretaker partners. Supplies needed include an 18-gallon Rubbermaid tote, a Styrofoam cooler, straw (not hay), duct tape and a utility knife. Instructions can be downloaded at www.
hscalumet.org/App_downloads/catshelter. pdf. Supplies are limited and so attendees are encouraged to register by emailing HSCA at info@hscalumet.org. Alley Cat Allies, the national advocate for feral and stray cats and the foremost authority on Trap-Neuter-Return, launched National Feral Cat Day in 2001. This year, thousands of people will celebrate National Feral Cat Day by calling for their local animal shelters to reform their policies and adopt Trap-Neuter-Return programs to save feral cats. Through Trap-Neuter-Return, outdoor cats a re huma nely t rapped, spayed or neutered, vaccinated, a nd returned to their outdoor home. Hundreds of loca l gover n ment s now have ord i na nces endorsi ng Trap-Neuter-Ret u r n, wh ich is rapid ly becom i ng t he predom i na nt approach to feral cats. WOODROW WILCOX On September 21, 2015, I worked on a medical bill problem for a client from Valparaiso, Indiana. She sent me a copy of a bill and asked me if she should pay the bill. She bought a ver y good Me d i c a r e s u pp l e m e nt insurance policy through our insurance agency. I investigated why she was getting a bill and learned t hat she shou ld not be getting a bill. Her insurance company had attempted to pay t he bill – t w ice. The billing service is not ser v i ng its cl ient wel l. Its client is t he doctor who gave services to our client. I wrote a letter to both the billing ser vice and the director of billing at the hospital where the ser vices were rendered. Here is part of that letter. ### T he ser v ices were rendered on 04/01/2015 T he cl ient ’s Me d ic a re supplement i n su r a nc e compa ny t ried t he pay the balance on 06/15/15 with a VIRTUAL CREDIT C A R D pay ment w it h the confirmation token nu mber of X X X X X X . THE BILLING SERV ICE N E V E R C A SH E D T H IS PAYMENT. The payment attempt expired on August 31. Then, on September 15, the client’s Medicare supplement i n su r a nc e compa ny issued a nd sent check number X X X X X X X X X to pay the balance. As of the date of this letter, that check had
not yet been cashed. A l l t he t ime t hat ou r cl ient ’s i n su r a nce company has attempted to pay the balance of the bi l l, our senior cit i zen cl ient ha s been bi l led repeatedly. There is no reason to make an elderly per son wor r y about a bill when her insurance company has attempted to pay. Someone who is responsible for receiving and crediting payment has made a mistake. Alerting ma nagement to t hat problem is the purpose of this letter. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter. Let’s avoid this problem in the future and not make seniors worr y needlessly. That is unfair to them. ### The help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agenc y d ist ing u ishes itself by “going the extra mile” to help our clients in such matters. Does your insurance agent or agency give this high standard of service to senior citizen clients? If not, why not? Note : Woodrow Wi lcox is the senior medical bill c a se worker at Sen ior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of t hat i nsu ra nce agenc y over one million dollars by correcting medical bill mistakes in the Medicare system. He wrote the book S O LV I N G M E D I C A R E PROBLEM$.

Any time a citizen has an opportunity to meet with a police officer on more of a personal level, it is a success for the community. Residents find Police Officers as being approachable and not just someone to call when there is an emergency or call for service. The idea of the Coffee with a Cop event is that people have a chance to ask questions, voice concerns, and get to know the officers who work and serve the community. Some of the concerns that were brought up in pervious coffee with a cop events were a Handicapped sign request, a traffic complaint, and a Landlord having a problem with an eviction. Several people signed up for the Village Code Red notification system, and several others wished to be added to the Neighbor Watch Group for their area. Our next event will be on Saturday, November 7, between 8 and 10 am at McDonalds located at 17810 Torrence Ave. Residents will be able to sign up for Code Red and Neighborhood Watch groups. No agenda or speeches, just a chance to ask questions, voice concerns, and get to know the officers in your neighborhood! Please feel free to call Sgt. R. Hoving if you have any ot her questions at 895-7130. There is a lso a website, w w w.coffeewithacop.com that may provide additional information.

T h e r e a r e u nscr upu lous people ever y where who w i l l do whatever it ta kes to separate you from your money. You need not even leave the relative safety of your own home to fall prey to t hese v u ltures. In t he computer age scammers have many new tools at t heir disposa l. These crimina ls a re not all the stereotypical sl ick sc u mbag look i ng scoundrels of t he past. To d a y ’s s u c c e s s f u l s c a m m e r s a r e sma r t, educated a nd sophisticated. They need not even be on the same side of the world to rob you blindly while you rela x unsuspectingly within the docile dwelling of your own domain. I have a friend who was recently deceived into one such scam, known as the “Tech Support Scam or the Call for Support Scam”. It works like this: You are using your computer when suddenly a message pops up i n for m i ng you t hat you have a virus on your computer. A voice may say, “Your computer has been infected by a Trojan Horse v ir us. Ca ll t he number on you r screen before you make any purchases on-l i ne. You r persona l information is at risk.” Or it may say something similar. W H ATEV ER YOU DO….DON’T CALL THAT NUMBER. If you do, you’l l be talking to a scam artist. They w ill conv ince you t hat you need t hei r ser v ices to remove t he v i r us a nd f i x you r computer immediately. Of course they can fix it. They are the ones who put the pop-up on your computer i n t he f i rst place. sea rch engine you use. You r computer doesn’t really have a virus, just a malware pop-up telling you it does. The scammers conv i nce you t hat you need their help. You then pay them using a credit or debit card (hopefully, rather than giving them you r check ing accou nt information). They have just taken some of your money fraudulently…but they’re not done. Ne x t t he y t e l l y ou t hat you have a bigger problem t han expected a nd conv i nce you to a l low t hem to cont rol your computer remotely. Once in, they have access to any and all personal information you have on the computer. They can also plant something in your computer so t hey can get back in whenever they choose to. They will also attempt to sell you more “security” products bec au se w hat you a re currently using is inferior. T hese people a re ex t remely c onv i nc i ng , after all this is what they do for a living. I had a hard time explaining this to my friend. He was convinced that the person he was dealing with was helping him. I persisted to show him more evidence and he eventua lly relented, ta k i ng my adv ice to contact his bank, change his debit account, change all passwords, and even brought his computer in to a reputable place and had the hidden programs installed by the scammers removed. To d ay ’s t e c h nolog y can be usef ul and entertaining, but utilizing it also puts you at risk for deception by unscrupulous scoundrels i n ever y cor ner of t he world. Beware.

Chicago’s Mark Hood goes from SSC studio to Team Pharrell
South Suburban College is proud to announce alumnus Mark Hood will be appearing this season on NBC’s “The Voice.” After choosing to join Pharrell’s team during the Blind Auditions, Mark has moved into the Battle Rounds. During the “blinds,” the auditioning singers select the team he or she wants to join if more than one of the celebrity mentors hits the buzzer to turn their chair because they like what they are hearing. Hood received the full fourchair turn for his rendition of Bill Withers “Use Me.” He chose to join Team Pharrell after stating his sound is “kind of like John Legend meets Pharrell.” Hood, 24 years old, was born, raised and currently lives in Chicago, Illinois. He recently graduated from SSC in May of 2015 after studying Radio/TV Communications and participating in the college’s studio programs and talent shows. “Being a communications student
at SSC, I was exposed to so many facets of TV production, which helped my love for entertainment grow,” said Hood. “Lea r n ing t he beh ind t he scenes, believe it or not, helped me in front of the camera.” Hood added, “As a freshman at SSC, I participated in the school talent show one cold November night, and I sang the wrong song! It was there that I learned to trust my gut, and don’t try songs you’ve never sang before. I also

Absorption Rate MIKE BUDER What is absorption rate and why is it important? The simplest definition of absorption rate is the rate at which properties are sold in a given area. For exa mple, t here a re c u r r e nt l y 2 49 s i n g l e family homes for sale in Lansing, Illinois. During the month of September (the most recent month of closed data), 37 homes closed in Lansing. If you take the current inventory of 249 homes and divide that by last month’s closed sales (249/37), you get 6.7 months. That means if the current inventory stayed the same and the rate of closed sa les rema i ned the same, it would take 6.7 months to deplete or sell the existing homes. A normal market would be considered bet ween 5-6 months of inventory. If there is 1-4 months of inventory, it is considered a seller’s market. If there is more t han 7 mont hs of inventor y, t hen it is c o n s i d e r e d a b u y e r ’s market. Remember, absorption rate is constantly changing as new homes come on the market and existing homes sell. Why is it important to know the absorption rate? If you are look ing for a quick sale, the absorption rate will help you determine where you should price the home. For example, s a y y ou a r e t h i n k i n g about pricing your home Easley Painting & Staining. Interior-Exterior, drywall, taping, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, water damage, window glazing, pressure washing, deck refinishing. Q u a l i t y w o r k m a n s h i p, s e n i o r d i s c o u n t s. Fre e estimates. 708-758-3241
a t $ 13 0 , 0 0 0 a n d y o u calculate the absorption r ate for homes pr iced bet ween $130,000$140,000 was 14.3 months. But homes priced between $120,0 0 0 - $130,0 0 0 had a n a bs or pt ion r ate of 5.3 months. If you were looking for a quick sale, you m ig ht pr ice u nder $129,000. However, if you weren’t in a hurr y a nd were prepa red to wa it, y ou m i g ht pr ic e ov er $130,000. Absorption rate is an important indicator of what is going on in your market and should not be overlooked. Keep in mind the absorption rate can and w ill var y from cit y to city, neighborhood to neighborhood and even from one price range to another. If you are looking to sell a home, feel free to contact me for the most recent absorption rate to aid you in the sale of your home. BOB KRYGSHELD Nat iona l Save for Re t i r ement We e k i s observed Oct. 18 – 24 this year. The event is even recognized by t he U.S. Senate for its importance in encouraging Americans to prepa re t hemselves financially for retirement. Are you doing all you can? Many of your peers aren’t. About a third of working adults have no retirement sav ings or pension, according to a survey by the Federal Reserve. And more than half of workers report that the total value o f t h e i r h o u s e h o l d ’s savings and investments, excluding t he va lue of their primary home and any defined benefit plan (such a s a t rad it iona l pen sion), i s less t ha n $25,000, according to the Employee Benefit Research Institute’s 2015 Retirement Confidence Survey. Such f ig u res help explain why many people are unsure if they’ll ever be able to retire. Nearly 40% of the respondents in the Federal Reser ve’s study either have no intention to retire or plan to keep work ing for as long as possible. Of course, if you enjoy your career, or just simply like to work, you may be in no hurry to retire. But you may want to put yourself i n a posit ion someday when work is optional – not mandatory. To reach that point, consider taking these steps: • Estimate your cost of retirement. At what age do you pla n to ret i re ? In ret irement w i l l you stay home a nd pu rsue your hobbies, or will you t ravel t he world ? W i l l you do some consulting or other part-time paid work, or volunteer? By answering these and other questions, you can at least estimate your costs during retirement.
• Contribute to your 401(k). Contribute as much as you can afford each year to your employer-sponsored retirement plan, such as a 401(k). At a minimum, put in enoug h to ea r n your employer’s matching cont r ibut ion, i f one is offered. This is a great way to put money away for retirement, because your earnings can grow on a tax-deferred basis. Us e y o u r i n v e s t m e n t choices within your 401(k) to build a portfolio that’s appropriate for your goals and risk tolerance. In 2015, you can contribute up to $18,000 to your 401(k), or $24,000 if you’re 50 or older. • Fu lly f und your IR A. Even if you participate in a 401(k) or other employers p on s or e d r e t i r e me nt plan, you’re probably still eligible to contribute to an IR A as well. In 2015, you can contribute up to $5,500 – or $6,500, if you’re 50 or older – to an IRA. A traditional IRA offers taxdeferred earnings, while Rot h IR A earnings can grow ta x free, provided you don’t sta r t ta k i ng withdrawals until you’re 59½ and you’ve had your account at least five years. Plus, you can fund your IRA with virtually any type of investment you choose. Try to “max out” your IRA every year. • C ont rol you r debt s. Every dollar that doesn’t go into a debt payment could be invested for your retirement. T he s e a r en’t t he only steps that can help you move towa rd a comfortable retirement – but they can certainly help get you on the right path.
