Congress has dedicated the third week of October as Nationa l Save for Retirement Week. Clearly, the government feels t he need to urge people to do a better job of preparing for retirement. A re you doi ng a l l you can? Many of your peers arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t â&#x20AC;&#x201C; or at least they t hink t hey arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t. In a recent survey conducted by Bankrate.com, r e s p ondent s r ep or t e d t h a t â&#x20AC;&#x153;n o t s a v i n g f o r retirement early enoughâ&#x20AC;? was their biggest financial reg ret. Ot her ev idence seems to show they have good cause for remorse: 52 % of households 55 and older havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t saved anything for retirement, according to a report from t he U. S . G ov er n ment Accou nt abi l it y Of f ice, although half of this group reported having a pension. Obv iously, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;l l wa nt to avoid hav ing eit her f i na ncia l reg rets or major shortfalls in your retirement savings. And that means you may need to consider making moves such as these: â&#x20AC;˘ Take advantage of all your opportunities. You may wel l have access to more t ha n one ta xadva ntaged ret irement p l a n . Yo u r e m p l o y e r may of fer a 401( k) or similar plan, and even if you participate in your employerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s plan, you are probably still eligible to contribute to an IRA. You may not be able to afford to â&#x20AC;&#x153;ma x outâ&#x20AC;? on bot h plans, but try to contribute as much as you can afford. At the very least, put in enough to your employerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s plan to earn a matching cont r ibut ion, if one is offered, and boost your a n nu a l c ont r i but ion s every year in which your salary goes up. â&#x20AC;˘ Create an appropriate investment mix. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not enoug h ju st to i nvest regularly through your I R A , 4 01( k ) o r ot h e r retirement plan â&#x20AC;&#x201C; you also need to invest wisely. You can fund your IRA with virtually any investments you choose, while your

One suggestion: Build an emergency fund containing three to six monthsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; worth of living expenses, kept in a liquid, low-risk vehicle outside your IRA or 401(k). We do not have to take an endless assortment of aptitude tests to determine or carve out our niche. When we are young we do not study the demographics to consider whether our skill set is a viable alternative. We do not calculate whether it is a worthwhile investment of our time to develop our gift or skill set. Yet, we don’t have to throw the baby out with the bath water. We can still enjoy the pastimes we enjoyed or gravitated to when we were younger and thereby become more energized and in turn more productive. God wants us to live an abundant life. When we shelve a gift He has given us we are in a sense rejecting a part of ourselves, with this mindset we are operating on a counterproductive level. God has designed us in a way where we find fulfillment and wholeness in operating in the way that He designed. We do not have to justify or rationalize the time we spend baking, painting, writing or singing or anything else that enables us to ‘feel Gods’ pleasure,’ as one Olympian once stated. We have a responsibility to our Creator to develop the gifts that He has bestowed. Perhaps you will get to share your gifts on a large platform, perhaps not...Ultimately, what is important is that you hone your abilities and let God use them as He sees fit. It is a privilege to develop the gifts that our Creator has given us, which is our part to play; the rest is in His hands…

God Revealed Through Scripture ANNA M. CAISON I began this column a little more than 5 years ago with the purpose of showing the many ways God reveals Himself to us. I began my faith walk with the Lord at age 13. Today, at age 61 I’ve never ceased to be amazed at His work in, through and around me. I’ve been betrayed by Judas, chased by Saul, and found comfort in Jonathan. Through Judas I discovered God had a plan in the midst of betrayal. And from Saul I’ve learned to trust the promises of God no matter how bad things appear. I’ve w a l ke d w it h A br a h a m a nd journeyed with his son Isaac. I’ve stood next to Isaiah when he saw a vision of God’s throne. I fell on my face beside him as we both saw the wretchedness

When cancer invaded my body I encountered the love of a Heavenly Father who walked with me through the fear of surgery, and recovery. When my husband abandoned me, His love remained steadfast. As the Apostle John said at the end of his account of the gospel, there is so much more I can say of my experience with the Lord that if I were to try to write it down it wouldn’t be enough room in this column or this newspaper for the next 60 years to contain it. Not a good idea to have your kid playing piano for “mood music” or to have your “show dogs” running a rou nd n ippi ng hea ls. Every so often we run into a listing that simply has us walking away shaking ou r heads – Is it t hat sellers don’t listen or that they just want to do things their way? PI A NO BOY: A nyone t hat attempts to tack le any musical instrument gets a sa lute f rom me, but t here’s a t ime a nd a place for ever y t hing. Walking through a home w it h interested buyers is not that time. Despite my repeated suggestions t h at l it t le T i m my ic e dow n h i s f i nger s, w e were subject to “over the rainbow” for what seemed li ke a 30 m inute loop. Timmy was into it; perfect posture, hand and head positions and he missed that same note every time he came to it. We started at f labbergasted, moved to a little annoyed and left laughing. Not at Timmy, but at his stage mom who for some reason felt that w e w er e a n aud ienc e instead of buyers looking at the house. ANKLE BITERS: I know P recious a nd Spa rk y a re g reat dogs, but not ever yone wa nts to be ac c oste d by t hem. Show i n g a home one day we were peppered t he entire time by t wo Ma ltese dogs t hat kept nipping at the buyer’s feet and pant cuff. Dogs sense v ulnerability and these t wo were enjoy ing t he adventure – not so for the buyers.

Owners should be proud of their home, but be confident that agents and buyers com i ng t h roug h w i l l recognize that and figure out which room is which. I know that experienced agents and focused buyers have a systematic approach to recognizing if a home is appealing and is going to work. I know that within m i nutes of get t i ng on site, a decision has been made as to whet her or not a pa r t icu la r home “strikes a nerve”. Serious buyers know what they wa nt. Sellers shouldn’t complicate t hings…it’s best to leave and let the agent and buyer evaluate your home alone. At the very least, take Precious and Sparky for a walk. If I had not helped our senior citizen client, she would have been hounded to pay a bill that she really did not owe. Our client did nothing wrong. The ow ners of t he surg ica l center made ser ious mistakes after the passing of the original owner. All I did was protect our client by insisting that Medicare rules be followed. The help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency rea lly ca res about our senior citizen clients and we prove it by helping them in such matters when something goes w rong in t he Medicare system.
