The wreaths are fresh and custom-made from Scotch pine by Kingma Christmas Tree Farm in Demotte, Ind. Stanzi, who renamed herself after Moza r t’s w i fe, wea rs a lab coat daily. She loves dissecting animals, particularly frogs. Her parents take her on family vacations to locations of shootings and other acts of violence. Stanzi loves Gustav and will go with h i m on h i s hel ic opter voyage, even though she can only see the helicopter on Tuesdays. King delivers a surrealist interpretation of four teens dealing with speci f ic issues. I w i l l admit, this is not the most accessible or easy book to read, but the power behind her words is real. Days after finishing it, I’m still contemplating different aspects of the book. It was a challenge to read, but worth it. I want to read it again see what else I can discover.

Jones to Help Seniors and Caregivers Learn to Prevent Identity Theft State Rep. Thaddeus Jones, D-Dolton, and t he Illinois attorney genera l’s office are hosting a Fraud Prevention Seminar for seniors and caregivers on Friday, Oct. 30 from 10 a.m. to noon at Bernadine Manor, located at 1700 Memorial Dr. in Calumet City. “With news of data breaches and credit card scams, I want to make sure seniors in our community aren’t being taken advantage of,” Jones said. “It’s important for seniors to know how to protect themselves, which is why I a m connecting t hem w it h experts who offer tips and updates on ways to safeguard their money and identity.” Jones will be welcoming staff from the Illinois attorney general’s office to give a seminar on ma k ing w ise consumer decisions in order to avoid

COPS Awards for Dyer and Griffith Police Departments Congressman Pete Visclosky announced today that the Dyer Police Department and the Griffith Police Department will each receive $125,000 from the Department of Just ice Com mu n it y Or iented Pol ici ng Services (COPS) Hiring Program. The COPS Hiring Program grants provide up to 75 percent of the entry-level salary and benefits for a full-time officer for a 36-month period. Dyer Chief of Police Dav id W. Hein indicated that this grant would allow Dyer to dedicate a full-time officer to a new community policing division. Chief Hein stated, “We are very excited about this new opportunity. Their relationship with Him was as critical to them as the air they breathed. They did not want to check their faith at the door. They wanted the freedom to live out what they believed. A genuine faith cannot be removed from everyday life any more than a heart can be removed from a living person. Taste of First

W hen e x p er ienc i n g u n f or e s e en circumsta nces in life we of ten seek advice from our pastor or close friends. We strain to hear God’s voice of direction through a sermon, or a song. We’ll pull out our Topical Bible looking for passages that mirror our situation to explain or ma ke sense out of what we’re going through. And many times God will speak to us through others and through specific examples from the Bible. But there are also times when God will speak through the still quiet moments of a seemingly mundane task. One of the easiest to grow houseplants for me is the philodendra. I like the fact that it can be grown in water or potting soil, and it produces lush green cascading vines. I had notice that for some time one of my plants appeared to be dying. One by one its long lush vines withered, turning yellow and then brown before falling off the main branch. Yet there was new growth shooting up near the base of the plant. In an attempt to save the last of its dying vines I clipped it and placed it in a separate container of water with a few drops of plant food. The next morning, the clipped vine had made a miraculous recovery! The leaves were no longer

It was here, in this unexpected moment of serene a ma zement t hat God spoke peace to me in the midst of the bewildering situation I was going through. There are seasons of growth when it becomes necessary for God to “clip” us, setting us apart from the group in order to prepare us to bear more fruit, either in a different position or in a new location for His purposes. If we cling to where God desires to remove us from, like my vine, we will wither and become unproductive. This past summer I was introduced to a book titled, “Lord, I’m Listening” by One Listener (aka Marianne Hartmann). The author shares her insight from scriptures written in meditation format from God to the reader. Topics include, “Be Still,” “Comfort,” “Come to Me,” “Be Open,” “Doubts and Fears,” and other topics relevant to the individual seeking a closer walk with the Lord. BOB KRYGSHELD Daylight Savings Time ends November 1st and we’ll set our clocks back an hour. The change in seasons reminds us that time is passing – and it’s important to use that time wisely. When used well, in fact, time can be your greatest gift in many walks of life – and that’s certainly true when you invest. To i l l u s t r a t e t h e i mpor ta nce of t i me, let’s look at a scenario. Suppose you start saving for ret i rement when you are 25. If you invest $3,000 per year in a taxdefer red veh icle, such as a traditional IRA, and you hypothetically earn a 7% annual return, you w i l l have accumu lated more than $640,000 after 40 years, when you reach 65 and are ready to retire. (Keep in mind that you will be taxed on withdrawals.) Suppose you wait until y ou’r e 5 5 b e f or e y ou start saving seriously for retirement. If you put that same $3,000 per year in that same IR A, earning that same hy pothetical 7% ret u r n, you’d on ly end up with slightly more t ha n $ 4 4,0 0 0 a f ter 10 years, when you reach 65. A nd to accumulate the $640,000 you would have gotten after 40 years by contributing just $3,000 per year, you would have had to put in about $43,500 per year for the 10 years between ages 55 and 65. Clearly, it’s a lot easier to come up with $3,000 per year than $43,500. So, to accumulate the resources you need for a comfortable retirement, you’ll help your cause greatly by saving and investing as early in your working life as possible – and then continue to save and invest right up to, and even during, your retirement years.

Hammond was the last stop of the 2015 national tour. The original train passed through Northwest Indiana, including Hammond on its way to Chicago then on to Springfield, Illinois in My 1865.
