Saved Dyer Woman $500

WOODROW WILCOX On October 18, 2016, I wrote a letter to a medical firm in northwest Indiana to help a cl ient f rom Dyer, Indiana. With some ed it i ng to protect ou r client’s privacy, here is the letter that I sent. ### Our client sent to our office a bill from your firm for our review. The bill seeks a balance of $500 on Account Number XXX for services rendered on 07/25/2016. I checked with t he c l ient ’s Me d ic a r e supplement i nsu ra nce company on what it knew of this bill. It reported that Medicare denied and zeroed the claim on this. The client and I requested a Medicare review form a bout t h i s cla i m . It arrived and I compared it with your bill. The Medicare review for m shou ld conta i n exactly the same i n for mat ion t hat you r f ir m received f rom M e d i c a r e . Yo u r b i l l to t he cl ient for $ 50 0 is for ser v ices t hat Medicare ruled you are not entitled to payment f rom Med ic a re or t he patient. See footnote “D” of Cla im #X X X . If you caught this problem and ref i led t he cla i m w it h

corrected coding, realize that Medicare does not send rev ised Medica re review forms to Medicare supplement i nsu ra nce companies. So, if that is t he c a se, plea se send both the original billing information and the new Med ic a re i n for mat ion directly to the insurance c om p a n y. O t h e r w i s e , accept t he r u l i ng of Medicare and do not bill our client for the $500. ### The help t hat I gave our client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agenc y d ist i ng u ishes it s el f f r om ot her s b y helping our senior citizen clients with such billing problems for free. Does your insurance agent or agency give this high level of service to senior citizen clients? If not, why not? Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill ca se worker at Sen ior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of t h at a genc y over one million dollars by fighting m ista kes a nd f raud i n the Medicare system. He wrote the book SOLVING MEDIC A RE PROBLEM$ and posts articles at www. PNW Graduate Students Focus On Performance Arts

University, said that working with students who have an enormous respect for each other and their craft has been an absolute pleasure. “My goal is to encourage and promote original thinking so that students create performances that are meaningful and insightful to an audience,” Carilli said. C h r i st ia n Lute s, a c om mu n ic at ion graduate student at Purdue Universit y Northwest Calumet campus, said since joining the class last year, she was able to go beyond her comfort zone. Before the class, she had never performed. She was not alone as about half of the class admitted to never performing as well. “I think it’s an excellent experience,” Lutes said. “It helps to you shape as a person and a scholar – it gives you an idea of the application of the things you are learning.” Lutes sa id t hat t he teach i ng st yle of Professor Carilli pushes students without t hem bei ng f u l ly conscious t hat it is happening. Kathryn Furlan, another graduate student of the Communication and Creative Arts department, said the course emphasizes several points such as performing through mundane choices such as choosing where to eat or picking an outfit to wear. “Another point is learning how to embody our own or someone else’s experiences in order to communicate and relate with the universal whole,” Furlan said. The compilation is titled “Performances of Women’s Mental Health and Wellness” dealt with personal experiences each individual performer had in their life.

Reformation Day or Halloween? ARLO KALLEMEYN na i led 95 statements onto a chu rch door i n Wit tenberg Ger ma ny. T hese statements were t he cata lyst of The Reformation. While it made a large impact on the political, economic, social, and artistic aspects of life in those days, the Reformation was at its heart a religious movement. The Reformation was the great rediscovery of the good news of salvation by grace through faith for Christ’s sake. Since Halloween and Reformation Day happened on the same day, it was even more unlikely that little Dutch kids would be going trick or treating on October 31. Any way, back to the story. This past Reformation Day/Halloween, a young deer in Grand Rapids did not listen to his parents. He went trick or treating a ny way. He must have been using a plastic pumpkin for all his candy. How do we know this? Because he was spotted r unning t hrough t he forest w it h t he pumpkin stuck on his head. Since deer do not have fingers he must have stuck h is head i nto t he pu mpk i n a nd t he black plastic carry handle slipped over his horns. He was spotted numerous times by local residents, one who called the Michigan DNR. They never got close enough to tranquilize the deer to remove the pumpkin. He ran around for a week with the pumpkin on his head before he was able to wiggle out of it last weekend. He is a very lucky deer since next weekend hunting season starts in Michigan. A local hunter was quoted, “He will be pretty easy to spot, jumping through the woods with an orange pumpkin on his head.” Next October 31, this young deer will be one year older and hopefully one year wiser. He may just have a family of his own. I can picture him telling his young son. “Son, you shou ldn’t go t r ick or treating. Get a cup of hot cider, come over by the fire and I’ll tell you a story about my adventure with a plastic pumpkin.”

A you ng deer nea r Gra nd Rapid s Michigan will be celebrating October 31 differently next year I would venture to guess. First, a little history for those of you who did not grow up in a Dutch Reformed community: The Dutch Reformed tradition of years past frowned upon the day of Halloween. Our parents taught us that witches, ghosts and goblins were not a healthy thing to be celebrating. Halloween origins are traced back to the Celts many years ago. The Celts believed that in the season between fall and winter, the veil between this life and the next was at its smallest. They feared that evil spirits could come back into this world in the form of animals to get back at them for the sins they committed. So they got a group of their neighbor’s together, dressed in scary costumes and lit fires to keep the spirits away. I guess that one bright guy decided that since they were all getting together anyway, someone should bring food. No one volunteered, so they all decided to bring a hot dish - and the potluck was born. (Now the pot luck is a tradition that’s still going strong in these parts, but that a story for another day.) So it turns out that some of the Celts were sneaking into the potluck to partake of all the good food, but they didn’t bring a ‘dish’. So next year the organizers of the potluck went house to house to gather food items instead of trusting everyone to bring something. That’s where the trick or treating tradition started. (A good potluck is built on trust – it just won’t last long if too many moochers show up.) Our Dutch ancestors did not want any part of those traditions and so Halloween was not celebrated in the Dutch Reformed circles. In their eyes, the only benefit of Halloween was that the candy was free. Even that did not convince our parents to allow us to go trick or treating. Besides all that candy would rot our teeth. It just so happens that Reformation Day is on the same day as Halloween. Reformation Day is a day that is celebrated by most of the Protestant churches in this country. His work f lies in the face of the flattening elements of Pop Art & Minimalism, transcending stylistic impulses into the realm of the sculptor’s true passion for the framing of the real space of his world. Joe once said, “To be a sculptor, one must have a good sense of humor. An artist takes a lot of ribbing...from those who do not understand the work.” The public is welcome to visit this art exhibition and reception at no charge. The Thiel Gallery is on the fourth floor in the Art & Design hallway and is open Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., and Fridays from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. SSC is located at 15800 South State Street, South Holland, Illinois. A Realtor Is Not An Expense MIKE BUDER I wou ld n’t t h i n k of going mountain climbing without some professional g uida nce. I remove splinters but I wouldn’t feel comfor table about taking out an appendix or spleen. I can clean my ow n teet h, but f i l lings a nd crow ns go beyond my u nder st a nd i ng. I n time, I could learn to do most anything but, some t h i ng s a re bet ter lef t to professiona l ca reerminded people who do t hem con st a nt ly. Rea l estate is one of t hose things. Anyone can buy, sel l, t rade or i nvest. I am not challenging the capability of a person and what they can do if they put their mind to it. But I am saying that there are times where the prudent, most sensible thing to do is to spend your money correctly to accomplish a need or want. A real estate agent is a tool that when w ielded cor rect ly does what it is supposed to do. In a transaction that involves a large amount of money, a team should be formed to accomplish the necessar y moves to either get in or out of a transaction. I might add, real estate is not a do over activity. $10,000 to Bridge Technology Gap for Individuals with Disabilities On Tuesday, October 25th, representatives f rom Comcast NBCUniversa l w ill v isit New Star in Chicago Heights to observe how a recent grant of $10,000 is changing the lives of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: How do home inspections work and how do they work into the sales contract?

However, through the years, it has become common practice for the buyers to ask the seller to do repairs or give credit to the buyer at closing so they can fix the items. Most sellers will have safety issues fixed as these issues are a concern for them. But, over the years, we have seen the buyers ask for everything to be repaired, including minor issues. Buyers need to be careful here. What most buyers who are purchasing a home may not understand is that once you ask the seller to do something as a result of the home inspection, you are renegotiating the contract, and the seller could decide not to sell anymore. The request for repair, rejects the original offer, and introduces a new offer. The seller does not have to accept the new offer, and further more does not have to sell to the buyer anymore.

A nswer: W hen buy ing a home, it is common practice and encouraged for the buyer to have a home inspection on a house, once you have agreed on price, terms and conditions, and have a signed offer to purchase. The inspector will check the structure, t he mecha n ic a l s y stem, plu mbi ng , electrical and more. They will come up with a report which often highlights areas that have concern, and may need to be corrected. This list may be quite extensive. The list could include anything as minor as a small rip in the kitchen floor vinyl, to as extensive as a failing foundation or major safety issues. The practice of home inspection was intended to let the buyer know what they were buying during the discovery period, and allow them the opportunity to continue forward to purchase, or give notice that they no longer want to buy. In most cases, it allows them to get out of the contract without bias, and allows them the return of their earnest money deposit.

Nontraditional Student Fulfills Lifelong Dreams Through Community College For a s long a s Ma r sh nei l Gay ca n remember, she had t wo goa ls she wanted to accomplish with the pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters she deposited in cof fee ca ns over the years. Now, at the age of 70, the Riverdale resident has fulfilled both of her dreams of achieving her college degree and visiting Paris, France. “Getting a college degree has always been a sense of pride that I wanted to experience,” said Marshneil, a recent 2016 g raduate of Sout h Subu rba n College (SSC) in South Holland, Illinois. “My parents completed high school and provided me and my siblings with a good education, but high school was as far as they could see.” W henever Ma rsh nei l had t he time and money, she would enroll in a class at whatever college was most convenient to her employment situation. For 47 years she worked to support her family that included five children, while putting her own goals on hold and changing plans many times along the way. As she prepared for her retirement, she decided to make good on a promise she made to herself many years before and enrolled in college. “I knew right away that I belonged at Sout h Subu rba n Col lege,” sa id Marshneil. “With the advantage of so many programs and so many people who wanted to help me, there was no reason for me to fail. My goal was to study hard, ask questions, and earn good grades. I am proud to say that in May I graduated from SSC with honors and as acting president of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.” W hat Marshneil didn’t know was that her hard work in the classroom and as a peer leader would help her to

achieve another lifelong dream. One day while study ing in the Honor’s Lounge at SSC, she noticed a flyer for Study Abroad Scholarship Programs w ith one of the destinations being France. “I immediately began completing the necessary application and essay, obtained references, and prepared for the inter v iew,” said Marshneil. “To my su r pr ise a nd del ig ht, t he program coordinator ca lled me to say, ‘Marshneil, you can stop saving

change, you will be going to France this summer.’ Being awarded a scholarship to study abroad was an opportunity of great magnitude, and I was humbled.” Traveling among a cohort of students some 50 years younger, Marshneil immersed herself in all aspects of the program with her peers. “I learned firsthand the traditions, the culture and the hospitality of a great people. I saw famous works of art and places I have only viewed in textbooks or online. It was truly the adventure of a lifetime.” Ma rshneil sa id she spea ks constant ly to her children, g ra ndch i ld ren a nd ot hers “you ng a nd old” about t he importa nce of education. You see, Marshneil has always believed in giving back to her community. She currently serves as the Civil Service Chairperson to the Village of Riverdale among many other community roles. Ma rsh nei l added, “It feels s o e m p o w e r i n g w h e n y ou h a v e education – it opens your mind to the possibilities.” Ma rshnei l Gay received her Associate’s Deg ree in Communit y Health Sciences and hopes to help seniors with her knowledge. She is already making plans to further her education through the Community Health Worker certification program. DEE COLLINS Dear Dee: I am a 23 years of age trying to balance relationships, school, work, etc. Is there any given time when you can forget about those things and just focus on YOU without hearing the opinions of ot hers? If so, how do you ma ke t his accomplishment?

work or school hours. However, you can communicate in your relationship when you need your ME-TIME. If it is a healthy relat ionship, please be assured t hat you will not get any negative feedback. Dee Speaks…You Think! – About Life & Relationships

Dear Millennial: First and foremost, I commend you for endeavor i ng to reach you r l i fe-long dreams and goals in various domains in life, especially at a young age. You are in the prime of your life to think big and go after whatever your heart desires. In doing so, the biggest task for anyone, of any age, is to rid your ear from the opinion of others. In order to do so, you must become more confident via not trying to please others. Balancing life is difficult within itself. Having others opinions only wears you down, when you are striving to take your life to the next level. The key ingredient is not forgetting about YOU! Self-care is vital. So, please take time for “ME-TIME!” You can’t avoid

GOD WITH US

If... ANNA M. CAISON If (cer ta in) Ch r ist ia ns were as passionate about proclaiming and living the Gospel as they are about promoting political agendas we’d see a dramatic drop in the social ills plaguing our nation. Ever y elect ion yea r socia l med ia is f looded w it h posters t hat insinuate the party you choose to give your vote to will determine whether you are a real Christian or not. The measuring stick used to determine which party is Christlike is the issue of abortion. However, a careful study of the history of abortion in the US reveals abortion to be a bipartisan law. The claim of being a pro-life party is a cover to obtain votes from unsuspecting Christians to gain control of congress, that would guarantee unrestrained power and control over the nation’s economy to corporations who fund the party. The determining factor of being a Chr ist ia n is one’s relat ionship w it h Christ, and not the party one chooses to vote for. For many, this is a very heated and stressful election. Neither candidate is an ideal candidate which makes the decision of who to vote for extremely difficult. Perhaps t he fol low i ng suggest ion might help you in making a decision. Do a pro and con list on both candidates. List what has been proven true about both, the good and the bad. After gathering your facts, ask yourself the following quest ions : W hich ca nd idate do you believe would seek counsel before making a decision that could jeopardize national security, foreign policy, and relationships w ith allies? W hich candidate do you believe best exercises self-control under pressure and criticism? Which candidate do you believe would seek to better the economy for a l l A mer ica ns a nd not just for big Corporations? Ask God to help you see through all the rhetoric of both candidates so you can make the best possible decision between the two choices. And when making your decision, keep in mind that your choice must not be based on what’s best for any one group of Americans, but what’s best for all Americans.
