On October 29, 2015 students from Thornton District 205 will compete in the congressional district level hearings of the We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution program.

The students have studied for months to prepare for their role as experts testifying on selected constitutional issues in a simulated congressional hearing. The class that wins the congressional district level competition, will then compete at the state finals on December 11, 2015 at the Dirksen Federal Building in Chicago for the opportunity to represent Illinois at the national finals, April 29–May 3, in Washington, D.C. The We the People program is the most extensive education program in the country on the principles and values of the Constitution and Bill of Rights that embodies, and aims to give students a thorough understanding of their rights and responsibilities as American citizens. A panel of judges will test the expertise of the classes in various areas based on the We the People text. Students will address topics such as the history and philosophical ideas underlying the Constitution; the development and expansion of the Bill of Rights; and the role of citizens in American democracy. The program forces students to analyze constitutional principles and apply them to day-to-day life.

Implemented nationwide in upper elementary, middle, and high schools, We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution has reached more than 30 million students and 90,000 teachers since its inception in 1987. The program is funded by the U.S. Department of Education under the Education for Democracy Act approved by Congress and directed by the Illinois Center for Civic Education through the Center for Civic Education.

Athlete’s feet is caused by a fungus which is commonly found associated with the feet. It is characterized by a burning or itching of the sole of the foot or between two toes. Many times the skin appears very moist but can also appear dry with peeling skin. It usually begins as small brown blisters with clear yellowish liquid inside. Christians aren’t perfect sin-free people, they’re imperfect forgiven people. We struggle with temptation, and at times we fail miserably. But because of our relationship with Christ, we experience f or g i v e n e s s a nd v ic t or y ov e r ou r weaknesses (sin) when we come to Him with a repentant heart. Below is a short devotional that illustrates this truth.

HID IN CHRIST “For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden w ith Christ in God.” – Colossians 3:3 W hen I read the above scripture I caught a glimpse of myself peering out from behind Jesus who stood firmly in front of me with His arms shielding me as if something or someone was coming toward us in an attempt to hurt me.

As I continued to think on this, I realized there was someone approaching; an archenemy, the accuser of the children

of God, the adversary, Satan. Whenever I’m at my weakest moment he rushes in with accusations, condemnation, guilt, insecurity, fear, and doubt.

“Gui lt y! ” he shouts. “You’re not worthy of God, why should He bless you?

You’re a sinner; you’re no different than I. Fraud, that’s what you are. I saw you yell at your child, I heard the ugly things you thought about your neighbor. Ha, ha, ha!

You’re going to hell with me, ha, ha.”

Satan reaches out to grab me, but Jesus stands fiercely between us. “You can’t touch her Satan,” Jesus states with authority. “She is hid in me! She is no longer imprisoned w it h you. I have dressed her in my righteousness; she has been cleared of her sin and has been declared not guilty by my blood! You can’t touch her; you can’t separate her from the love of God. She is safe in my arms.”

Another way of preventing this from happening is ask your Realtor to put in the agent to agent private remarks in the MLS report of your home, to ask the buyers to remove their shoes or use the provided shoe covers and to please keep their children with them at all times.

That is sloppy, irresponsible advertising.

The ads should specif y that October 15 to De c ember 7 i s t he open enrollment period for on ly Medica re Pa r t C (Medicare Advantage pla n s) a nd Med ic a re Part D (prescription drug plans). A senior can review a nd sw itch a Medica re Supplement pla n A N Y TIME OF THE YEAR. Many times when our agents suggests reviewing Me d ic a r e Supple me nt pla n s du r i ng t he re st of t he yea r, our senior citizen clients tell us that they thought they could do that only during the “open enrollment” period.

The federal government’s bad adver t ising causes t h is con f usion. Ou r insurance agency ex per iences a not her problem because of the f e d e r a l g o v e r n m e n t ’s sloppy advertising, too. Fourth, ask what t he client’s decision is.

Fifth, help the client to complete an application if t he client decides to switch from one plan to another. Sixth, fax and/ or mail the application for t he client. Sevent h, wait and help the client to respond to any questions from t he company offering the plan.

Maybe t he federa l gover nment a nd its ad agencies don’t know how to com mu n icate t he facts in clear and concise m a n ner b e c au s e t he y don’t really understand the details of the Medicare system themselves.

Pennies on the Dollar MIKE BUDER T here have been so many myths throughout the years: There’s a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, there’s a fountain of yout h in Florida, a n apple a day keeps t he doctor away, a nt iv i r us software is 100% effective.

To d a y ’s c u r r ent my t h seems to be that you can buy homes for pennies on the dollar. This past week, I had a buyer that wanted to offer 50% less than the current list price because t he home was a “shor t sa le”. The buyer sa id, “we want to offer $50,000 CASH and we know that C ASH w ill be accepted over buyers who need to finance.” Okay, but the home is listed at $100,000, it is a short sale, there are already 6 contracts into the bank all at or OVER the list price and the bank has to approve the short sale. Every week I educate potential buyers about the rea l estate market here in the south suburbs of Chicago. Yes, there are a few REO’s, cor porate owned, foreclosures and pr ivate sa les out t here that you might pick up for pennies on the dollar.

But, you need to look at the total cost and time of bringing that home up to livable condition because t he homes t hat sell for “pennies on the dollar” are just that – tota l f i x ups!!!

And you’ll need to prepare for many of these changes – including the financial ones, because adoption can be expensive.

T h e a v e r a g e U. S . adoption costs between $8,000 and $40,000, while the range for international adoptions is $15,000 to $30,000, according to the Child Welfare Information Gateway.

However, you can get some financial help in the form of tax benefits, which include both a tax credit for qua l i f ied adopt ion expenses and an exclusion (f rom your ta xable i nc ome ) of employerprov ided adoption assistance. In 2015, the maximum tax benefit you can claim is $13,400; this amount is reduced if your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) exceeds $201,010 and is completely phased out if your MAGI is $241,010 or more. The adopt ion ta x cred it is non ref u nda ble, w h ich means it’s limited to your tax liability for the year.

Her e’s a n e x a mple of t he ta x benef its : Suppose you pay $13,400 i n qu a l i f ie d adopt ion expenses in 2015 and your employer rei mbu rses you for $3,400 of those expenses. Assuming you meet the MAGI guidelines, you can exclude $3,400 from your gross income for 2015 and can claim $10,000 ($13,400 minus $3,400) for the adoption tax credit.

(Tax credits reduce your income tax liability on a $-for-$ basis.)

Of course, whi le t hese ta x benef its ca n reduce your overall cost of adopt ion, you st i l l have to come up with the money – which, as we’ve seen, can amount to many thousands of dollars – in the first place. How will you do it?

Your first step is to plan as far ahead as possible.

Since the adoption process

can often take a year or more, you will generally have some time to prepare.

W hen you f ind t he adoption agency that best meets your needs, get an estimate of the total costs i nvolved. Once you’ve got this figure, you can determine how you’ll meet these costs.

You might be tempted to take out a loan from y ou r 4 01( k ) , b u t y ou should try to avoid this move – a 401(k) loan will likely reduce the growth potential of this account, w h ich i s desig ned for ret i rement. You m ig ht also consider a loan from a bank – but debt is debt, even if it’s for the purpose of expanding your family, and it’s always a good idea to keep one’s debt level down.

If you k new you wouldn’t need the money for, say, two years, you cou ld consider putt ing away a certain amount each month in a special “a d opt ion f u nd” i n a n i n v e s t m e n t t h a t ’s highly liquid and offers significant preservation of pr incipa l.
