School District 151 Veterans Day Ceremonies

You are invited to attend our 1st annual School District 151 Veterans Day Ceremonies on Monday, November 10, 2014. The program will be presented at five sites, with each ceremony lasting approx imately t went y minutes. The tentative schedule for the morning is as follows: 9:00 a.m. - Ceremony at Holland Home Retirement Home, 16300 Louis Ave., South Holland 9:45 a.m. - Ceremony at Taft School, 393 E. 163rd St., Harvey 10:30 a.m. - Ceremony at Coolidge Middle School, 155th & 7th Ave., Phoenix 11:00 a.m. - Ceremony at Eisenhower School, 16001 Minerva Ave., South Holland 11:30 a.m. - Ceremony at Madison School, 15700 Orchid Dr., South Holland Included in each program will be a presentation of colors, a patriotic number performed by the school band, an invocation, a brief address by a student on the importance and meaning of Veterans Day and an introduction of guests. Among those invited to participate as honored guests are: Congresswoman Robin Kelly, Mayor Don DeGraff, Mayor Eric Kellogg, and Mayor Terry Wells. Several local area veterans as well as currently active officers from the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps may be on hand to represent the military at the Veterans service. Greek Step Tribute Dolton Park District is having a fundraiser to benefit the “Steven R. Agee II Foundation”. Steven R. Agee II was the College Student that was murdered at Northern University in November, 2011. This was his senior year; he was the President of his Kappa Chapter. His parents have started a scholarship foundation in his name. The Mission of the foundation is: The foundation awards scholarships to deserving students in pursuit of higher education. What Are You Passionate About? ANNA M. CAISON I was recently asked, “What are you passionate about?” Given the gathering I was in, the question was unexpected and caught me by surprise. So I shared an old desire (recently re-kindled) for ministry to young moms. As I reflect on the answer I gave that evening, I wonder if my desired ministry reflects what I’m really passionate about. What am I passionate about? I have a passionate desire that every Christian comes into an experiential knowledge of Christ. I long for every believer who names the name of Jesus as their Savior a nd L ord to ex per ience a persona l relationship with Him. I yearn for every child of God to know Him beyond the stories they read in the Bible of Him (as a healer, provider, deliverer, comforter, etc.), to knowing Him as such in their own life. We, the visible church, have become so institutionalized that Christ is often viewed as living in heaven, far removed from the affairs of the church and the culture we live in. But the Lord is not far removed from us or the culture we live in. He is still the head of His church and He is alive and relevant to our modern day struggles and crisis. Through the Holy Spirit we can

Calumet City Fire Training Center Calumet City officials broke ground recently for the construction of a regional Fire Training Facility located on State St. between State Line and Wentworth Ave. This facility will feature a state of the art fire simulation rooms, interactive computer generated fire scenario models, traditional continuing education in fire fighting techniques and equipment operation. Calumet City Fire Fighters will be able to learn and improve their knowledge and skills at this facility and we will be able to lease the use of the facility to surrounding Fire Departments in Illinois and Indiana. “Advancements in equipment and technology for both fighting fires and protecting our Fire Fighters requires additional training and instruction throughout a Fire Fighters career. Most people think they just show up and squirt water on a fire, but it is much more complicated,” said Mayor Michelle. “Our Fire Department knows the layout of every large building in town as well as the basic floor plans of every type of residence. They need to know construction materials used, location of hazardous chemicals, methods of identifying people trapped in a burning or exploding structure, and how to protect our safety while getting themselves out alive and unharmed.” The project is being funded in part by a $813,465 legal settlement arising from a class action lawsuit opposing the collection of an amusement tax on ticket sales from 1982 through 2000. After 12 years of litigation, the funds were released to Calumet City on the condition that the money be used for a court approved public works project. Genesius Guild Brings Back “A Picasso” The Genesius Guild of First United Methodist Church Hammond will once more explore the question of “What is Art, and why do we make it?” as they re-mount their awardwinning production of Jeffrey Hatcher‘s play “A Picasso” November 7-16. The setting is Paris, 1941. Pablo Picasso (Larry Hinken) has been summoned from his favorite café by German occupation forces to a storage vault across the city for an interrogation. His questioner: Miss Fischer (Maggie ReisterWalters), a beautiful “cultural attaché” from Berlin. Her assignment: discover which of the three Picasso paintings recently “confiscated” by the Nazis from their Jewish owners are real. The ministry of propaganda has planned an exhibit, and only the great artist himself can attest to their authenticity. At first Picasso agrees to her request, confirming that the three pictures are indeed his own. But when Miss Fischer reveals that the “exhibition” is actually a burning of “degenerate art,” Picasso becomes desperate to save his work and engages in a pressurized negotiation with the equally determined and wily Miss Fischer to hold on to two of his precious “children” while consigning the third to the flames. The play is a cat-and-mouse drama about art, politics, sex and truth, with a twist at its climax. CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: I had a verbal agreement for the purchase of a home. Both parties had filled in the real estate contract including purchase price and earnest money amounts. All we had to do was to get together again to SIGN the contract and give the earnest money. The seller called me tonight and said the deal was off. Didn’t we have a deal? Answer: Nope. In real estate contracts must be in writing. There must be an “offer” and “acceptance” and there must be “consideration” such as a deposit. “Acceptance” in this case did not occur because there is no signature. In your case what you had was a friendly chat and a bunch of paper. What you heard may not have been what the seller heard. Without signatures on a piece of paper there is no way to know what was accepted and what was not. W hile the purchase price and the

How did the term “American Dream” come to be?

ARTHUR V. VEAL IV The American Dream has long been a say ing that people associate with buying a home in America and living the good life. T he wh ite picket fence and suburban liv ing all go along with this phrase to emphasize that as an American, the dream is to own a home in a nice, safe neighborhood. Do you know where the phrase American dream came from? The term was originally coined back in the early thirties and was me a nt for i m m ig r a nt s to f ully understand t he freedom that they could ac h ie v e b y c om i ng to A mer ic a a nd pu r su i ng their dreams. Later in the 60’s and 70’s after the wars the term was adopted by Fa nnie Mae to encou rage wa r veterans to return home and get a mortgage to buy a home. Prior to that time, most Americans didn’t buy a home with a mortgage. They saved their money and paid for homes cash! (Go figure!) I think that Americans may be starting to lose t r u st i n t he A mer ic a n Drea m. Not because fa milies don’t have t he desire to own a home, but now the actual way young families begin is changing. Ma ny young adu lts a re now living with parents until they get older which slows dow n how ma ny people are looking for a new home. The economy has

also changed drastically because now many college graduates don’t see long term job opportunities. Most new jobs h i re temporarily or contract work and that may make p ot e nt i a l h om e bu y e r s nervous about their future. A s a home sel ler or potent ia l home bu yer, this equation of unstable long term job growth will hold down the real estate ma rket s i nto t he nea r future. T h e g o v e r n m e nt i s trying to help by loosening the credit criteria of loans but there is a much bigger issue than credit because of t he cha ng i ng job market. W hat I bel ieve w i l l end up happening is we a re now seei ng a tota l shift in how A mericans op e r a t e f i n a n c i a l l y. I think eventually financial responsibilit y w ill become more important for you nger A mer ica ns and housing overall will i ncrementa l ly i ncrea se or not at all. This means that if you are selling your home don’t expect prices to jump up anytime soon. You may also want to look i nto a lter nat ive sel l i ng programs. Not a good idea to have your kids playing piano for “mood music” or to have your “show dogs” running a rou nd n ippi ng hea ls. Every so often we run into a listing that simply has us walking away shaking our heads – Is it that sellers don’t listen or that they just want to do things their way? PIANO BOY: Anyone that attempts to tack le a ny musical instrument gets a sa lute f rom me, but there’s a time and a place for everything. Walking t h r ou g h a home w it h interested buyers is not t hat t ime. Despite my repeated suggestions that little Timmy ice down his fingers, we were subject to “over the rainbow” for what seemed l i ke a 30 minute loop. Timmy was into it; perfect posture, hand and head positions a nd he m issed t hat same note every time he came to it. We started at f labbergasted, moved to a little annoyed and left laughing. Not at Timmy, but at his stage mom who for some reason felt that w e w er e a n aud ienc e instead of buyers looking at the house. ANKLE BITTERS: I know Precious a nd Spa rk y a re g reat dogs, but not ever yone wa nts to be ac c oste d by t hem . Showing a home one day we were peppered t he entire time by two Maltese dogs t hat kept nipping at t he buyer’s feet a nd pa nt cuf f. Dogs sense v ulnerabilit y and these t wo were enjoy i ng t he adventure – not so for the buyers. THANKS, WE’LL FIGURE IT OUT: Does a nyone need a tour guide for a

home? Maybe the White House or t he Vatican… but i s one needed for a 1, 2 0 0 s q u a r e f o o t bungalow? And ridiculous as hearing “…and here’s the kitchen…” is having to stop e ver y t h i ng to hear ever y painf ul and excruciating detail of w hat a mou nt s to a standard sink, faucet, or l ig ht f i x t u re. O w ner s should be proud of their home, but be confident t hat agents a nd buyers com i ng t h roug h w i l l recognize that and figure out which room is which. Fa c t s h e e t s a r e f i n e , tour g uides (especia l ly owners and/or their kids) a r e not . Wor k i ng f u l l time in real estate since 1981 I’ve been in several thousand homes. I know that experienced agents and focused buyers have a systematic approach to recognizing if a home is appealing and is going to work. I know that within m i nutes of get t i ng on site, a decision has been made as to whet her or not a pa r t icu la r home “strikes a nerve”. Serious buyers k now what they want. Sellers shouldn’t compl icate t h i ngs...it’s best to leave and let the agent and buyer evaluate your home alone. At the very least, take Precious and Sparky for a walk. And the more you k now about t hese ex penses, t he better prepared you will be to deal with them. To begin with, just how ex pensive is long-ter m care? Consider this: The average cost for a private room in a nursing home is more than $87,000 per yea r, accord i ng to t he 2014 Cost of Care Survey produced by Genworth, a f i na ncia l-ser v ices company. And the average cost of a n a s s i s t e d l i v i n g facility, which provides a level of care that is not as extensive as that offered by a nursing home, is $42,000 per year, according to the same Genworth study. All long-term care costs have risen steadi ly over t he past several years, with no indication that they will level off. Ma ny people, when t hey t hink about longterm care at all, believe t hat Medicare w ill pay these costs — but that’s just not the case. Typically, Me d ic a re on l y c ov er s a sma l l percent age of long-term care expenses, wh ich mea ns you w i l l have to take responsibility. O f c ou r s e, i f you a re for t u nate, you may go through life without ever needing to enter a nursing home or an assisted living facility, or even needing help from a home healthcare aide. But given the costs involved, can you afford to jeopardize your financial independence — or, even worse, impose a potential burden on your grown children? To p r e v e n t t h e s e events, you will need to create a strategy to pay for long-term care expenses — even if you never incur them. Basically, you have two options: You could

self-insure or you could “transfer the risk” to an insurer. If you were going to sel f-i nsu re, you wou ld need to set aside a considerable su m of money, as indicated by the costs mentioned above. And you would likely need to i nvest a reasonably high percentage of this money in growth-oriented investments. If you chose this self-insurance route, b u t y ou n e v e r r e a l l y needed a sig n i f ica nt amount of long-term care, you could simply use the bulk of the money for your normal liv ing expenses du r i ng ret i rement a nd earmark the remainder for your estate. However, if did need many years of nu rsi ng home ca re, you could end up going through all your money. As an alternative, you could transfer the risk of paying for long-term care to an insurance company. Many plans are available these days, so, to find the choice that is appropriate for your needs, you will want to consult w ith a profe s siona l f i na nc ia l adv isor. Here’s a word of caution, though: The premiums for this ty pe of protection rise pretty rapidly as you get older, so, if you are considering adding this coverage, you may be better off by acting sooner, rather than later. None of us can know with certainty what the future holds for us. Ideally, you will always remain in good shape, both mentally and physically, with the abi l it y to ta ke ca re of yourself. But, as you’ve heard, it’s best to “hope for the best, but plan for the worst.” So, take the le s s on s of L on g-Ter m Care Awareness Month to heart and start preparing yourself for every scenario. You will need to determine and implement your sales, marketing, and advertising strategies as well as distribution. If you have the most amazing product in the world, it won’t sell if no-one knows about it, or t hey ca n’t purchase it. L icensi ng out t he r ig ht s to ma nu fac t u re and sell your invention to a not her compa ny decreases your cont rol over it, but relieves you of many of the duties and headaches associated with starting a business from scratch as well, and can it also be very lucrative.
