GSU Hosts Freshman Friday Admission to a four-year university for highly qualified students has been streamlined at Governors State University with a program called Freshman Fridays. Attending the session, providing the appropriate documentation and meeting the qualifications enables graduating seniors to apply to GSU and receive an instant admissions decision on-the-spot. The future GSU students can meet w ith academic and financial aid advisors, take a tour of the university and see what residence hall life is like.

To qualify for direct admissions on Freshman Fridays, graduating seniors must meet the following criteria: have an unweighted GPA of 3.0 on 4.0 scale, have a minimum composite ACT score of 20 with at least a 20 in the English and math components and provide their official high school transcripts and official ACT scores (scores may be posted on the official transcript). Additionally, GSU will waive the application fee for qualified applicants attending Freshman Fridays.

The next Freshman Friday will be held on November 13 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Governors State University is located at 1 University Parkway, University Park, Illinois.

Prairie State College Speech Team The Prairie State College (PSC) Speech Team placed third in the community college division and earned several individual honors during the recent tournament hosted by Moraine Valley Community College.

Pat rick Shea rd of Dolton was na med tourna ment champion in persuasive speaking and received third place in prose. Kelly Crescenzo of Steger was named tournament champion for informative speaking. Daniel Blewitt of Crete received third place for inter-squad improvisational scene. Shania Johnson of Park Forest received fifth place for persuasive speaking.

Also competing were Rachel Brooks of Matteson, Caleb D’Amico of Country Club Hills and Anfernee Gray of Sauk Village. The team was coached by PSC Professors Ed Schwarz and Joshua Green. “Overall, our first timers said they learned a lot and are excited to continue competing throughout the year,� Green said.

Peace Church Celebrates Jubilee Year For 50 years, Peace Christian Reformed Church has been part of the South Holland community. From its earliest beginnings, as an “extension” of other local churches, Peace Church has planted deep roots into the soil of South Holland.

Organized in November, 1965, with 25 charter families, the congregation first met in a classroom at Calvin Christian School. Weekly attendance usually varied from 25 to 100, as guest pastors competed with the colorful kindergarten displays. Several months later they were able to rent a white frame church building on 164th Street, using it for four years of services and other meetings until their present building at 833 E. 168th Street was built and dedicated Easter week, March, 1970.

Three years later a German-built tracker organ was installed to support congregational singing, and the original part of the building was complete.

We are looking to purchase a home that needs some work, but it’s amazing how many homes are past the “needs work” and into the “disgusting” category. Bad odors, torn carpeting and walls with holes…the list goes on. We can’t find anything. Any suggestions?

Answer: Let’s rev iew t his…. You a re looking for a good deal, but you don’t want a home with odors, or a home that needs some work? I don’t think the distressed property market is for you. If you want a good deal on a home, you are going to have to find something that needs a lot of work. A home with odors, torn carpeting and holes in the walls and more. If the home doesn’t need work, the homeowner can sell it at fair market value which is usually always higher than what they would get in an investors market.

Finding a super deal in real estate is not easy. The overwhelming majority of homes sold would be categorized in the “fair deal” category. Fair, because Realtors price the homes correctly and appraisers ensure the buyer is not overpaying for a home in an effort to protect the lender.

Fair would also mean that both the buyer and seller are satisfied with the sale terms.

If you are looking for a deal, then you need to look at homes that need work, do the math, and hope that you can make a profit by selling it for more than what you paid for it plus expenses to fix it up and sell. There is tough competition in the investor market. Everyone wants to make money selling homes.

Sometimes you can get a deal if you are a cash buyer and find a seller who does not want to deal with a buyers financing and wants a quick close.

Discuss your ideas with a Real estate Broker to see if this is really something you want and can do.

The District 205 Board of Education is embarking on a major Fiscal Strategic Planning Process to address major financial threats facing the district. “This is a Challenge, not a Crisis.” In order to prevent this fiscal challenge from becoming a financial crisis, as in1998-2004, the Board of Education is acting proactively vs. reactively and needs you to be a part of the process.

To ensure strong, long-term fiscal stability the Board will use Board Goal #5, Demonstrate and communicate effective and efficient school district operations to ensure excellent stewardship of public resources. The Board has two (2) objectives for the process: 1) Develop a Five-Year Financial Plan and 2) Determine an annual strategy of either balanced budget or manageable debt. The Board believes in a District that is Bigger (expanding input from the entire school community}, Better (using all resources to support the curriculum that leads to student success) and Stronger (the course offerings to ensure that students are competitive) School District 205. You are critical to the process.

Throughout the next five months (November-March), the Board of Education will conduct Fiscal Strategic Planning meetings by school community, as well as meetings with village officials, school boards, churches and community groups to ensure that our students’ needs are met. The meetings will provide information about each high school as well as the school district’s resources and academic programming. To that end, District 205 has a College and Career Resources center located at each school. These resource centers provide great support and assistance to you, as well as your child. Students receive information on the millions of dollars in scholarships, various universities, colleges, trade schools, military programs and careers that are available for them.

Prairie State College Celebrating Veterans Prairie State College (PSC) has several events planned on campus in recognition of Veterans Day. Most events are taking place on the college’s main campus at 202 S. Halsted St. in Chicago Heights.

The first event is at 8:30 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 11, with the introduction of the Missing Man Table. The table will remain displayed in the college’s atrium through Wednesday, Nov. 25.

The Vetera ns Day ceremony w ill be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., on Wednesday, Nov. 11, in the Barnes & Noble College Auditorium. After a posting of colors by the Bloom High School ROTC Color Guard, PSC student Lance Joseph will sing the National A nt hem. Rev. Brian Thornton w ill give the Benediction, followed by a welcome from PSC President Dr. Terri L. Winfree.

The keynote address will be given by Rick Reinbold, mayor of Richton Park. After an awards presentation, Joseph will close the ceremony by singing God Bless America. A reception immediately follows.

The November Christopher Art Gallery exhibit, “Action/Reaction,” features works from a collective of veteran artists who

I fear that as a nation we are loosing our sense of identity. The United States of America was founded upon liberty and honesty and courage. There was a place for genuine debate, for honest inquiry, and the freedom of expression that made our nation distinct.

Calumet City Firefighters Join the Fight Against Breast Cancer In recent years, fire departments across the country have joined together to recognize and promote October as “Breast Cancer Awareness Month”. This year marked the first time that the Calumet City Fire Department began wearing a new duty shirt containing a pink ribbon. The goal of the new shirts, designed by several firefighters, was to raise awareness as well as raise funds for a local cancer outreach.

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death in women after lung cancer. It is estimated that 3 million women are living with breast cancer and one third of them do not even know it.

One in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their lives. (Source American Cancer society).

Employees of the Fire Department, City Hall and various other city departments could be seen wearing pink throughout the month of October. “Early detection and treatment is key The shirts are just one way we hope to bring awareness to our community.” said Firefighter Kelley Pactwa. “Our hope is to continue raising awareness and continuing the fight against Breast

Cancer in years to come” commented Firefighter Cheryl Mayer.

Calumet City’s Mayor Michelle was very supportive of the various Departments participating in this year’s Awareness Campaign. For years she has recognized the importance of Breast Cancer Awareness and in 2013 had the color of one of the iconic Smiley Towers changed from yellow to pink. The inaugural year for the awareness campaign proved to be a huge success. Captain Pam Eanes stated: “Personally, I’m proud the department decided to join the fight against breast cancer. It affects so many women and hurts so many families. This year we were able to donate over $800.00 to the Cancer Resource Center and next year we hope to triple that amount and bring even more awareness.”

The Cancer Resource Center located in Munster, Indiana is a not-for-profit organization, which promotes the well being of all people whose lives have been touched by cancer, by offering support, education and encouragement.

Well, you do the obvious t o m a k e bu y er s w a nt it-have it looking great, no bad kitty litter boxes, a nd a reasonable price tag. But you a lso have to ma ke it compet it ive from the vantage point of the buyers’ agents, or t he buyers who wou ld love the place may never see it. You want to make your home the one every agent w it h a buyer i n your price range wants to show. You want agents, not only to show it, but to want your house to be the one their clients choose.

How do you do this? 1.

Ma ke you r home ea s y to show. If you only let people in on Wednesday at noon when the moon is full, that doesn’t work for agents, even if they h a v e bu y e r s f or y ou r home. 2. Hammer toes are actually a curling of the toes. Sometimes these are flexible and can be straightened with manipulation, or fixed which means they are always curled with arthritic changes that don’t allow straightening. Dr. John Richy. A bittersweet event, the church, in existence since 1919 has been a constant in the ever changing demog raphics of t he communit y founded years ago by German settlers straight from ‘the old country.’ As parishioners moved away and were not replaced by newer souls, t he church parish family dwindled to a few old timers who had been in the pews, got married there, baptized and educated their children there.

Fina l ly, t he huge cat hedra l- li ke brick structure w ith the amazing spectacular pipe organ became too expensive to operate. For the past few years, the church basement and kitchen was home to Gloria Hafer and her CPS After School Matters Culinary Class which helped keep t he beautif ul place r unning. But eventually even that was not enough and so the church had to have a final service. The church itself is for sale and the parsonage next door has been sold.
