Don’t Overlook Long-term Care Costs BOB KRYGSHELD How much money will you need in retirement? To arrive at an estimate, you should consider various factors, such as where you’ll live, how much you plan to travel, and so on. Not surprisingly, you’ll also need to think about health care costs, which almost always rise during retirement. But there’s one area you might overlook: long-term care. Should you be concerned about these costs? In a word, yes. Expenses for long-term care can be surprisingly expensive. Consider the follow ing statistics, taken from the 2016 Cost of Care Study issued by Genworth: • The average annual cost for a private room in a nursing home is more than $92,000. • The average annual cost for full-time services of an in-home health care aide is more than $46,000. These costs are certainly daunting. Of course, you might think that you won’t have to worry about them, because you won’t ever need any ty pe of longterm care, particularly if you’ve always been in good hea lt h a nd you r fa m i ly ha s no h istor y of later-in-life cognitive impairment. However, the odds may not always be in your favor, because almost 70% of people turning age 65 will need some kind of assistance or long-term care at some point in their lives, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Given t he cost s of long-term care, and the possibility that you might really need this care, how can you prepare for the costs? T h i n g s m a y c h a n ge i n t he f ut u re, but at t h i s poi nt, you rea l ly c a n’t c ou nt much on gover n ment prog ra m s to help pay for long-term care. Medicare typically

pay s for on ly a sma l l percentage of these costs, a nd, to be elig ible for Medicaid, you must have limited income and assets. In fact, you might need to “spend down” some of your assets to qualify for Medicaid long-term care services. Obviously, this is not an attractive choice, particularly if you’d like to someday “leave something behind” to your family or favorite charity. Consequently, you need to look at your options for paying for long-term care – just in case. You could earmark a certain percentage of your investment portfolio to cover long-term care costs; if you never need t his care, you can simply use the money to pay for other areas of your retirement or for ot her pur poses, such as charitable gifts or financial support to your grown children or grandchildren. Or, as an alternative, you might want to work with a financial professional, w ho c a n r e c om me nd a st rateg y speci f ica l ly de sig ne d to help you address long-term care costs. The marketplace in this area has evolved rapidly in recent years, so you should be able to find a solution that is both affordable and effective. Keep in mind, though, that the earlier you purchase a long-term care solution, the more economical it will likely be for you. In any case, don’t delay your planning for longterm care. Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: We have our home for sale here in Illinois and we are not getting any showing feedback from the buyers about their viewing of our home. Our Realtor said he requests it but the other agents do not reply. I think showing feedback would be a help in selling out home. Some don’t even leave a business card so I know they were inside my home. What are your thoughts? Answer: We understand the importance of good feedback to the seller. We always provide our fellow Realtors with feedback that may help the seller get their home sold. Realtors should give feedback if they are asked. Feedback is important to the seller because they want to know what buyers are thinking/saying about their property. Some agents fail to realize the true value in productive feedback. We use the feedback to back up our suggestion to the seller (especially if they don’t agree with us). Agent feedback is crucial in a buyer’s market. As far as no business cards, Realtors should always leave a business card in a home to let the seller know that, yes, we have been there. We have had calls from sellers telling us that they could not tell if the Realtor and buyer had been

there. Leaving a business card is simply a common courtesy that should always be followed in any occupied home, whether the showing instructions say so or not. We are professionals and should not have to be “told” to leave a card. This is also called common sense. The real estate business is no different than any other business. There are excellent agents and not so good agents. Of course, there are other problems. You should see some of the things that are posted in the MLS. No photos, pictures of cats drinking out of the toilet, incomplete information and a Realtor description of a property that makes a barn appear to be a castle. Make no mistake, using a good Realtor is by far the best way to sell or buy a home. But, be wise. Do some checking on the Realtor and their company before choosing. Veterans Event At SSC On Wednesday, November 09, 2016, South Suburban College presented their annual Veterans’ Day Celebration in the Performing Arts Center (PAC) with a “Presentation of Colors,” a guest speaker and a student/staff panel. The “Presentation of Colors” was presented by Sout h Hol la nd School Dist r ict 151’s CSWAP (Coolidge Students with Academic Pride). The students were dressed in full color, our f lag was presented, and the Pledge of Allegiance recited. Following their presentation, SSC Nursing student Aarin Adams performed a beautiful rendition of our National Anthem. The guest speaker was Bill Browne, Director of Cook Count y Vetera ns A f fa irs. Mr. Brow ne disseminated helpful information for veterans as well as spouses and children of veterans. His speech was insightful and students asked quest ions per ta ining to his presentation. Additionally, he brought along fact-filled brochures from the Cook County Veterans Affairs office that were made available to attendees. After a moment of silence for our fallen soldiers, the panel discussion began. Panelists gave recollections of t heir ser v ice experiences a long with what they learned. The majority

ANNA M. CAISON Just as I believe God allowed Obama to win the 2008 election, I also believe He has allowed Trump to win the 2016 election. His purpose, in part, is a wakeup call to His people. Have we become so entrenched in the ways of the world that we’ve lost sight of our purpose here on earth? The campaigning during this last election gave license to openly berate and bully one another because of differences in party affiliation. Though we participate in our civic responsibility to vote, we must never lose sight that our ultimate trust is in God and not man or any political party. Jeremiah prophesized during a time of

political and religious corruption within the nation of Israel. The United States is not a theocracy (God ruled) as Israel was. However, the church is, therefore the following words spoken by the prophet is applicable to Christians. It reads, “Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart departs from the Lord. . .... Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, and whose hope is the Lord. For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, which spreads out its roots by the river, and will not fear when heat comes; But its leaf will be green, and will not be anxious in the year of drought, nor will cease from yielding fruit” (Jer. 17:5, 7-8). Regardless of what the years ahead bring, the Christian will sur vive and thrive if he continues to trust in the Lord. And to thrive includes leading the lost to faith in Christ. Her medical bills are now in the millions and millions of dollars, and the going is pretty rough financially. Diane is pictured here at one of the fundraisers at JJ Kelley’s with her soul mate and boyfriend of many years, John Kawalec. John is Diane’s full time care giver and quit his job in middle management in order to be w ith her the 24/7 time needed for her care. Theirs is actually a classical love story. Both met in middle School in Lansing, went on with life, both got married and divorced and reconnected in 2006. Long story short they have been inseparable ever since. Unfortunately, there have been few resources available to them and money is very tight. A group of friends, dubbed the members of “Love Wins’ banded together and are creating fundraisers for Diane. 10TH ANNUAL ‘EVENING OF THANKS’ HONORS PETE MATRENEC: The annual event was held on Friday November 4th, 2016 at the Serbian Church Banquet Center in Lansing. A longtime member of the Lansing Veteran’s Memorial Ceremonial Honor Guard, Pete was badly hurt this past summer in a motorcycle accident in Munster. He was brought to Munster Communit y Hospital and then he was airlifted to Loyola where surgeons worked for many hours to save his leg which was almost severed. Pete is also a Lansing resident and has worked with the HG and other community organizations. His fellow veteran’s nominated him for this honor. He is pictured here at the event in his wheelchair which he vows he will ‘retire’ in a short time along with the honorees! The American Legion Post 697 Legion Riders will fly a special banner for him as they ride in and at Chuck’s request, his favorite Vietnam song, “We gotta Get Outa This Place,” by Eric Burdon and the A nima ls w ill be played. His cremated remains will be buried in Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood, Il. You fought the good fight Chuck--both in Vietnam and in life here at home. Rest in Peace.
