St. Ann School Food Drive

7th Grade Student Council members Dami Ogunyoye and Alejandra Vasquez carry donations out for delivery to the Lansing Food Pantry. ___________________________________

Every year, the students of St. Ann School rally together for a Thanksgiving Food Drive to benefit the Lansing Food Pantry. Each grade is assigned a different category so that the school can donate a broad variety of items: Pre-K brings in baby food; Kindergarten canned fruits and veggies; 1st grade, pancake mix and cereals; 2nd, soups; 3rd, granola bars and crackers; 4th, stews and chili; 5th, peanut butter and jelly; 6th, coffee, tea, or powdered milk; 7th, pasta or rice; and 8th grade donates pasta sauces. “It’s nice to t hin k t hat toget her we a re prov iding everything that might be on a family’s shopping list,” says Laurie Glowacki, whose sons are in PreK and Kindergarten. “And the kids are so happy to pick out their own donations-it’s important that they’re learning to think about others, especially at this time of year when we are teaching them to be thankful for what they have.” St. Ann’s is a PreK through 8th grade parochial school that has been educating children in Lansing and surrounding areas since 1950. FMI, or to schedule a tour or shadow day for your child, please call 708.895.1661.

License Plate Replacement Program Secretary of State Jesse White today announced his office will launch a cost-efficient passenger license plate replacement program beginning in January to replace the oldest license plates with newly designed plates at no additional cost to Illinois taxpayers. B-truck license plate replacement is expected to begin in 2018. The purpose of the program is to ensure – now and in the future – that older license plates on Illinois roads are replaced. License plates’ reflectivity diminishes with age, which impacts law enforcement’s ability to quickly and accurately identify license plate numbers. “This is a forward-thinking, longterm solution that does not require a complete replating overhaul, which would cost around $60 million,” said White. “This plan removes older plates and replaces them with newly designed plates within our current budget. This will ensure that plates are appropriately

replaced with the ultimate goal being no license plate on the road will be more than 10-years-old.” Under t he prog r a m, t he oldest license plates will be replaced first. In 2017, passenger plates that were manufactured in 2000 and 2001 will be replaced. In 2018, passenger plates that were manufactured in 2002 and 2003 will be replaced. Each year the office will continue to replace older license plates with the newly issued plate. The process will start again in 2027, replacing the plates issued in 2017. Vehicle owners will be notified by mail if they qualify for the new license plates. When they renew their vehicle registration, they will be provided with a yellow sticker with a “T’ on it to affix to the rear license plate of their vehicle. Within 60 days they will receive their newly designed license plates in the mail with a new registration sticker already affixed to the rear license plate. Owners are encouraged to recycle

Even if you save and invest d i l igent l y t h r ou g hout your working years, you could still be vulnerable to financial dependency if you need an extensive period of long-term care, such as a nursing home stay. These costs can be enormous, and Medicare typically pays only a small percentage, and usually for just a limited time. CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: We are selling our home by owner. The time to sell is getting critical for us. We think it is worth what we are asking, but it is not selling. What is your opinion on this? Answer: First of all, no buyer cares what you think your home is worth, nor do they care how much you owe on it. You have to understand that the home is only worth what a buyer is willing to pay based on the recent sales, current competition & market conditions. And, in most cases, the lender will require an appraisal, which brings us back to recent sales. Appraisers use recent sales of similar properties in determining the value of the home. If your Home appraises lower than the sales price, and you are not willing to sell at the appraised price, then the buyer will not get the loan and your deal is dead. Did you say “then I’ll wait for another buyer?” Well that’s fine except chances are the next appraisal will probably come in the same as the last appraisal, maybe even lower, depending on the market and you’ve just lost all that market time. If you want to sell your home by owner, that’s fine, but you need to figure in the large amount of extra time it is going to take to sell your home, because you are reaching such a limited buyer group. Real estate companies reach a much larger pool of

Thanksgiving Day MIKE BUDER O n O c t ob e r 3, 178 9 President George Wa sh i ng ton made a proclamation of a nationa l day of T ha n k sg iv i ng. I won’t quote h i s de cl a r at ion in its entirety but this is what I felt was important to share as well as a little about the context for this declaration. “Whereas it is the duty of all nations to ack nowledge t he providence of Almighty God, to obey His w i l l, to be g ratef u l for H is b enef it s, a nd hu mbl y implore His protection and favor; and whereas both houses of congress have by t heir joint com m it tee requested me to r e c om mend to the people of the United States a day of publ ic thanksgiving and prayer to be obser ved by ack nowledging w ith gratef ul hearts t he ma ny sig na l favors of Almighty God, especially by a f ford i ng t hem a n oppor t u n it y peaceably to establ ish a for m of g ov e r n m e nt f or t he i r sa fet y a nd happi ness. Now t herefore, I do recommend and assign T hu rsday, t he t went ysi xt h day of November nex t, to be devoted by t he People of t hese Un i t e d S t a t e s t o t h e service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficial author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may t hen in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble t ha n ks for His kind care and protection, for t he peaceable a nd

rational manner in which we have been enabled to establish const itut ions of gover n ment for ou r safety and happiness, and particularly the national One a nd now lately instituted, for the civ il and religious liberty with which we are blessed…..” When President Wa sh i ng ton st ated “particularly the national One now lately instituted” he was referring to the f irst a mend ment to t he constitution. Some people believe that the first amendment means that religious expression in public place shou ld not be allowed. The men w ho gave u s t he f i r st amendment obviously did not intend to impose such restrictions. It was these same men, the day after they (congress) adopted t he f i r s t a mend ment , who a sked President G e or ge Wa sh i ng ton to de c l a re a n at ion a l day of T ha n k sg iv i ng t o G o d . T h i n k a b ou t Wa s h i n g t o n’s w o r d s . W hat do t hey mea n to you? May God bless you and your family…Happy Thanksgiving. Thornton Fractional South Receives Grant Thornton Fractional South High School has received a $500 grant from the ExxonMobil Educational Alliance Program, in conjunction with Ridgeway Petroleum of Lansing, Illinois, to support the school’s Math Department. Ridgeway Petroleum worked with school officials to secure the grant, which is one of 4,000 available to schools across the country served by Exxon or Mobil stations. A representative of ExxonMobil stated, “We are proud to be a part of the efforts by T.F. South High School to continue to provide outstanding educational opportunities to the young people of Lansing.” The ExxonMobil Educational Alliance Program is designed to provide Exxon and Mobil retailers with an opportunity to invest in the future of their communities through educational grants to neighborhood schools. ExxonMobil believes that, as members of the community, local retailers are best qualified to work with local educators to help identify schools and programs most in need of their support.

WOODROW WILCOX On October 31, 2016, a c l i e nt f r om C r o w n Point brought me copies of let ters t hat he had received rega rd i ng a n insurance billing problem that I had helped him to correct. About a month earlier, I spent a few hours with the client to learn why he was being billed for two Medicare related health i n s u r a nc e p ol ic ie s at the same time from one insurance company. Let me ma ke it clea r t hat ou r i n su r a nc e agenc y did not make a mistake and cause the problem. The insurance company made t he mista ke a nd caused the problem. The client was paying for both a Medicare supplement i n s u r a nc e p ol ic y a nd a Med ica re adva ntage pol ic y. You ca n’t have both at the same time. When we complained to the insurance company directly, it did not want to ad m it t he m ista ke. So, I helped our client file a complaint with the C on s u m e r P r ot e c t ion Division of the Indiana Attorney Genera l. That got results. The client had to decide wh ich pol ic y he wanted to keep. We ex pla i ned h i s opt ion s and let him decide. There was no perfect solution. He made his choice and got a ref u nd f rom t he i nsu ra nce compa ny of Permobil M300 power wheel chair, good battery, used very little, cost was approx. $10,000, will sell for reasonable price. 708-5965318

$5,944.74. O n H a l l o w e e n D a y, the client stopped by my office to give me copies of the letters showing that he was getting a big refund. He thanked me and our agenc y for work i ng so hard to make sure that he was treated fairly. He told me that after he left my office, he was going to f ly to Mississippi to stay there for about a month. Why can’t I have his kind of luck? All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agenc y d ist i ng u ishes itself by “going the extra mile” to help our clients whenever the Medicare related insurance system brea k s dow n and threatens to cause f ina ncia l problems for our clients. Does your insurance agent or agency g ive t h is h ig h level of service to senior citizen clients? If not, why not? Note: Woodrow Wilcox i s t he sen ior me d ic a l bi l l case worker at Sen ior Ca re Insu ra nce Services in Merrillville, India na. He has saved clients of that insurance agency over one million dol la rs by f ig ht ing m ista kes a nd f raud i n the Medicare system. Prayer to the Blessed Virgin

(Never known to fail.) Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in Eternal Glory. Thank you for your mercy toward me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days. After 3 days, the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. KAW

I Know My Name ANNA M. CAISON While reading the biography of “Barack & Michelle” by Christopher Andersen, I was reminded of the one thing President Obama has that I and most Blacks born in America don’t have; he knows his name. And because he knows his name, he knows his place of origin, his ancestors, their village, their language and their culture----his heritage, his identity. I don’t know my name. The surname of my father is not my father’s name, nor is it his father’s name or his father’s, father’s name. My ancestors were ripped from their place of origin and stripped of their language, heritage, culture and their name. They were forced into slavery and given the name of their owner as a form of identification. That name is the name that has been passed down from one generation to the next. Whenever the question would come up, “Why can’t you people forget the past?” I’d reply, “How can we forget the past when our name is an identifying mark of the past? That was the anguish I grew up with in the 60s and early 70s that led me on a quest to know “Who Am I?” This is what I discovered. The day I gave my life to the Lord I became a new creation. The personal stigma of my past was erased and I was

given a new surname: Child of God. Although the world still classifies me by my old slave name, I don’t respond in that name. I live, work and do business in my new name. My new name is connected to my new identity which is secure in Jesus. In His name, I continue to thrive in a society that is marred by injustice, racism and discrimination. Seeing myself through the eyes of God and believing w hat H is Word say s about me ha s changed my life! As a child of God, my list of ancestors has expanded to include the patriarchs of the Old Testament, King David, Abigail, Joseph, Da n iel, Apost le Pau l, Peter, Dorcas, Lydia, and all the other named and unnamed peoples of the Bible. Also included are the children of God who’ve nurtured my walk in the Lord--- Rev. Melvin UpChurch, Rev. Arthur Griffin, Shirley Gilbert, Guy Travis, Linda Abrams, Ja mes Scates, Joh n Dow ner, Em ma Dow ner and so many others. This is my heritage; this is who I am. And my purpose is to help other know who they can become through Christ. For questions and/or comments, send an email to anna.a62@yahoo.com . Or you can write me at: Anna Caison, P.O. ARLO KALLEMEYN If you are driv ing on Sibley Blvd. in Calumet City you may want to pay more attention than you usua lly do. In the past you had two choices – the left lane or the right lane. Each lane has its unique but familiar challenges. The left lane has drivers stoppi ng a nd m a k i ng left hand turns so extra at tent ion need s to be paid to the brake lights in front of you. The right lane had drivers turning right to clea r t he way; however ot her d r ivers would also enter the road f rom t he side st reet s. Throw pedestrians, bikes and sta lled cars in the mix and it gets to be quite interesting. Keeping your head on a swivel is good advice. Now howe ver, t here i s a new t w i st to t he bu s y Sibley Blvd. Out of nowhere you w i l l encou nter a new t y pe of lane like you’ve never seen before. Someone had the bright idea to create left hand turn lanes at practically every traffic light. Now, left turn lanes are indeed a ver y good idea since it moves the left turn drivers out of the 2 main traffic lanes. When there is a left turn arrow at the traffic light it works even bet ter. However, the left turn idea needs an actual left turn lane t o w or k t h e w a y i t ’s supposed to. That usually means a road widening project to create a turning For sale: 2014 Chevy Cruze 1LT Auto black granite, $12,339. lane. On Sibley Blvd. i n Calumet City a left turn lane suddenly jumps up out of nowhere. Without wa r n i ng, t he lef t la ne suddenly becomes a left turn only lane. You can be driving along minding the brake lights in front of you and all of a sudden you notice yellow markings in your lane that you are now in a left turn only lane. I’ve seen startled drivers swer ve into the right lane since they did not want to turn left onto that particular side street. Other drivers will slam on their brakes and come to a dead stop to try and figure out what to do next. Most drivers barrel right t hrough t he light even though they are clearly in the lane that requires a left turn. It sure seems like a short cut to create a left turn lane without actually making the road wider. Just borrowing the left lane for a few hundred yards at random intervals for a turning lane looks like an accident waiting to h appen . Hopef u l l y someone will do a study and see if these phantom left turn lanes are really an efficient way to move traffic. In the meantime when driving on Sibley Blvd, keep your head on a swivel.

I don’t know about you but when the holidays come around I automatically think of Wa lt’s Foods ! My memor y goes back to the ‘real’ Walt, the late Walt Legastee whose family founded t he g rocer y store, f i rst a s a fa r m stand in South Holland and then to the f lagship store on 162nd and State Street and then to all the modern Walt’s in Illinois and Indiana. When he was little My son Spencer would come with me and sit in the shopping cart while we piled it high with holiday goodies-turkey, ham, cranberries, produce, fresh home made bread and rolls and delicious freshly baked pies and cakes. He used to say when we came closer to the store....”Here is W Walt’s Mom,” he would beam proudly from his car seat. His daughters (he is about- to- be 47) now tease him about the “W Walts” too when we all have a Walt’s shopping trip! Shopping for Thanksgiving and Christmas at Walt’s is as meaningful for our family-- as the actual holiday is because our memories are built around getting the special items that make our family dinners uniquely ours. I guess we should be thankful to dear Walt for creating an old fashioned grocery store with a family friendly vibe that stands the test of time. Thanks Walt and Family for OUR holiday and everyday shopping!
