Question: Am I legally entitled to a written estimate before a body shop can start repairs on my car? Answer: According to the law, you are entitled to a written estimate for any repairs over $100, preferably before the work begins. Two types of estimates are possible: parts and labor, plus or minus ten percent, or a maximum price. When you get the estimate, the law says you can approve the estimate in writing, or ask for your car back “in a disassembled state.”

SALES EVENT!

Question: What happens if I can’t pay my student loans after I leave school? Answer: If you fail to make loan payments, you may be reported to credit reporting agencies as “delinquent.” If you have not paid on your loans for nine months, your student loan will go from being delinquent to being in “default.” You may be granted a “deferment” in the nine months before you default on your loan. After that, your only option will be “forbearance,” when your lender reduces the amount of your payments or allows you to stop making payments for a short time. Student loans cannot be discharged in bankruptcy, as a general rule, unless you can show that making payments creates an “undue hardship.”

EMPLOYEE PRICING!

Question: What types of questions can legally be asked about drug use during a job interview? Answer: An interviewer can ask what kind of medication you are taking that would cause positive results in a drug test. The interviewer can also ask if you use illegal drugs now or have done so within the past two years, and if you have ever been arrested or convicted of illegal drug use.

Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White announced today that victims of Sunday’s tornadoes w ill be offered the follow ing services over the next 30 days at no charge: duplicate certificate of title, duplicate vehicle registration, duplicate driver’s license and duplicate state ID card. White initiated a law effective in July 2012 that gives his office authority to waive such fees for residents impacted by natural disasters and living in counties that have been declared disaster areas by the governor. The 13 counties proclaimed disaster areas include: Cha mpa ign, Douglas, Gr undy, Jasper, LaSalle, Massac, Pope, Tazewell, Wabash, Washing ton, Way ne, Will a nd Woodford counties. In addition, White said his office will be offering priority title service on titles, duplicate titles and corrected titles. The fees for these services will also be waived. Motorists may apply in person at their nearest Driver Services facility. “I am pleased to be able to offer duplicate state IDs and driver’s licenses as well as this special priority service to people as a way to help those who have had their vehicles

destroyed by Sunday’s tornadoes,” said W h ite. “Frequent ly, in subm itt ing a n automobile claim to an insurance company, the owner of the vehicle must be able to present the proper title. Priority title service will offer residents who need their title immediately a way to obtain it in an easy, fast and convenient manner.” W hite noted that the priority service a llows his of f ice to process t hese tit le requests within just two days. “I am pleased to be able to offer these ser v ices to people who have su f fered from the terrible destruction of Sunday’s tornadoes,” said White. “Expediting services and waiv ing these fees may be a sma ll measure, but it is one I am glad to do for those people who are suffering in the wake of these devastating storms.” For more information on applying for a duplicate driver’s license, duplicate state ID card, or duplicate vehicle registration, motorists may contact the Secretar y of State’s general hotline number at 800-2528980. Motorists with questions about the priority title service may call 217-524-7889.

Hammer Toes

Hammer toes are actually a curling of the toes. Sometimes these are flexible and can be straightened with manipulation, or fixed which means they are always curled with arthritic changes that don’t allow straightening. Many times corns are found on the tops of these toes. Surgery can be performed to straighten these toes or occasional trimming of the corns can alleviate some of the pain. If you have any questions concerning hammer toes or any other problems, please stop by or call my office during office hours.

Thanksgiving Day MIKE BUDER On October 3, 1789 P resident G eorge Wash i ng ton made a proclamation of a nationa l day of Tha n k sg iv ing. I won’t quot e h i s de c l a r at ion in its entirety but this is what I felt was important to share as well as a little about the context for this declaration. “Whereas it is the duty of all nations to ack nowledge t he prov idence of A lmight y God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly implore His protection and favor; and whereas both houses of cong ress have by t heir joint committee requested me t o r e c om me nd t o the people of the United States a day of publ ic thanksgiving and prayer to be obser ved by ack nowledging w it h gratef ul hearts the ma ny sig na l favor s of Almighty God, especially by a f ford i ng t hem a n oppor t u n it y peaceably to establ ish a for m of g o v e r n m e nt f or t h e i r s a fet y a nd happi ne s s. Now t herefore, I do recommend and assign T hu r sday, t he t went ysi x t h day of November next, to be devoted by the People of t hese United States to the service of that great and glorious Being, w ho i s t he b enef ic i a l aut hor of a l l t he good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care a nd protection, for t he peaceable a nd rat iona l ma n ner i n wh ich we have be en ena ble d to

Hi my name is Bruce. I’m an approximately 2 year old black lab mix. I’m a sweet and good boy. I like the kids and dogs I live with. I like to go for walks but my foster mom says I need some leash manners (I think it’s because she doesn’t walk fast enough). I love to snuggle and give kisses and ride shot gun in the car. I’m potty trained and like to sleep in my crate. My foster mom says I’m ready to meet my forever family, are you them? I am fully vetted and ready to join your family. Red Cross Urges Winter Blood Donations The holidays bring families and friends together to share in celebrations and special times of giving. But for families dealing with a cancer diagnosis or other major illness, the holidays can be difficult. The American Red Cross’ Give Something that Means Something winter campaign runs through Jan. 6, 2014, and encourages eligible donors to give something meaningful this holiday season by donating blood or platelets for hospital patients in need. “Historically, during the winter months of November, December and January, fewer donors make the time to give blood due to competing seasonal activities, celebrations and holiday shopping,” said Sharyn Whitman, CEO of the Red Cross Indiana-Ohio Blood Services Region. “By doing something that doesn’t cost a thing, you can give an amazing gift – you can offer hope to a patient in need.” Blood donations can help fathers like Larry. Larry’s premature twins needed blood to survive. Thanks to the Red Cross, it was there. Larry has been a blood donor for more than 20 years and every time he donates, he’s reminded of the opportunity he has to give something that means something. Blood donors are encouraged to invite a loved one to follow in their footsteps and donate blood this holiday sea son. V isit ht t p ://rcblood.org/Hol idayPostca rd to

“When I think of the GOODNESS of Jesus, And ALL He has done for me----My soul cries out, HALLELUJAH! I praise God for SAVING me.” Besides t he above song , t here’s another one we use to sing in church that says, “If He (God) doesn’t do anything else for me, He’s done enough already” which leads me to another song from back in the day that says, “Anyway You bless me Lord, I’ll be satisfied!” Our culture does such a good job at showing us what THINGS we don’t have that will make our lives better that we forget about the priceless things that we do have. Despite the poor economy, financial hardships and living paycheck to paycheck, we have so much to be thankful for. Lately I’ve been so focused on what I don’t have that I had forgotten just how blessed I am! So, with a thankful heart I’d like to share some of the things I’m grateful to God for. First of all, I’m glad I KNOW Jesus as Savior and Lord. He is the glue that holds me together in every crisis. I’m grateful that my only son serving in the armed forces survived front line duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. I’m grateful that my youngest daughter, a f ter severa l Home for rent: Sauk Village. I’m gratef ul for my 4 children, their spouses and a total of 9 grandchildren who fill my life with love, laughter and good times. I’m grateful for the relationship I have with my siblings, extended family and friends. I praise God that my legs still work having been broken when run over by a bus at age 19. I praise Him that when treatment for breast cancer caused severe damage to my heart and the doctor said he couldn’t promise I’d live to see my 40th birthday, 19 years later I’m still here and cancer free. I thank God that after being unemployed for 2 years he blessed me with the job I now have and the ability to meet the demands required of me. And this is my short, short list of thing I’m grateful for. Oh, I’m a lso gratef ul that my old analog TV, non-smart cell phone and laptop can still get the job done making it unnecessary to go into debt purchasing newer gadgets that do the same thing. For questions and/or comments send an email to acaison@sbcglobal.net . Or you can write me at: Anna Caison, P.O. Box 529, Lansing, IL 60438.

Specials Ways to Celebrate the Holidays

Internet Edition

Seton Academy hosts Chamber Business After Hours

RILEY ROGERS During this Christmas season there are special ways to celebrate. I hope these ideas may help create special memories with your family. 1. Choose ritual and tradition over g if t g iv i ng. Establ ish fa m i ly r it ua ls a nd t radit ions t hat honor t he spirit of Christ mas a nd involve a ll fa mily members. It might be attending church as a whole family, it might be giving a meal preparation task to each member of the family, however young or old, or it might be writing heartfelt letters to one another describing how their acts of kindness have helped you through the year. Whatever your ritual, place more emphasis on caring and sharing than trying to outdo one another with gift giving. 2. Avoid spending money you don’t have. Don’t go into debt for the sake of one holiday. You don’t have to give expensive purchased gifts; instead, you can make a gift. Many people feel a homemade gift is better because it shows thought a nd considerat ion for t he recipient. Give w ithin your means, people w ill understand and you set an excellent example that liberates others from the

consumer treadmill. 3. Lea r n some of t he noncommercialized Christmas songs. There are some beautiful carols that you can sing together––maybe someone in your family or circle of friends can play the piano or guitar; if so, encourage them to play, and have a sing-along. Consider carols like “O Come All Ye Faithful,” “Joy to the World,” and “The First Noel.” You can find the lyrics online if you don’t know them. 4. Mute the ads! Seriously, stop the “buy this, buy that for Christmas” ads f rom i nvad i ng you r home l i fe. T he consumer economy has its place but it’s not in your living room during a sacred season. Teach kids to mute the ads and do it yourself. Or, record your favorite shows and fast forward your way through them. Everyone will feel greatly more at peace for it and there is less incitement to go shop till you drop. Avoid blindly obeying the encouragement of retailers to make Christmas all about consumerism, as that is far from the true meaning, regardless of whether you’re religious or not. Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas from Mayor Riley Rogers

Purdue Calumet Gets Approval For $1.3 Million Water Project State Rep. Linda Lawson (D-Hammond) said the State Budget Committee approved a $1,303,788 project that will initiate the first step in a multi-phase replacement of Purdue Calumet campus’ chilled water line. The committee voted to approve the project during a meeting in Indianapolis Nov. 20. The project will replace the chilled water distribution line between the Student Union Librar y and Lawshe Hall. Much of that piping is more than 40 years old and in bad condition. “Purdue Calumet is losing around 5,000 gallons of water each day because of leaks Roper washer and gas dryer for sale older model white asking 160.00 or best offer asis sale 708-205-6342

It is a good investment that will save the university a considerable amount of money. I appreciate the State Budget Committee’s support of Purdue Calumet’s Repair and Rehabilitation (R&R) Program.” The project will be funded through the university’s R&R appropriation, which was in the 2013 biennial state budget.

Random Reads BRANDI SMITS September Girls By Bennett Madison One day Sam’s parents decide to separate. More accu rately, Sa m’s mom decided to leave and go to some women’s camp that prohibits communication with men. Sam’s father opts to leave as well, only he isn’t going alone. With litt le wa r ning, t he t r io has packed the car and is on their way to North Carolina for the summer o r, a s S a m f e a r f u l l y ex pects, forever. He hides away from any remaining reminder of his runaway w ife and roams around the beach w ith a meta l detector hoping for a big score. Jeff views this trip as an opportunity to find a girl. Sam regards this trip as an unsolved mystery. He doesn’t know what he is going to do at the beach, but he is determined to make the most of it. When they first arrive, Jeff and Sam go down to the beach at night with a bottle of vodka and chat about things. Soon they s e e a m y s t e r iou s g i r l crawling out of the ocean ont o s h or e w h o s o on vanishes into the night. This starts the beginning

of the weird encounters with the girls in this town. A ll a re about t he sa me age with similar blonde ha i r, body bu i lds, a nd untraceable accents. They appear to be related, but their number is so great that it is unfeasible. Two girls in particular show interest in the brothers. Kristle and DeeDee. As the boys spend more time with the girls, they soon learn that there is more than meets the eye around here. T he g i rl s, w hatever t he y m a y b e, a r e not f r om Nor t h C a r ol i n a . Annual Thanksgiving Dinner Unites The Community Residents from throughout Thornton Township and the surrounding area gathered in the spirit of fellowship at Thornton Township’s annual Community Dinner. The event that began as a Thanksgiving dinner for the homeless in 2000 has become an event that unites all segments of the south suburban community. The annual event held before Thanksgiving is co-sponsored by Thornton Township and South Suburban College. Those in attendance enjoyed a traditional dinner prepared by Jimboo’s Catering and served by volunteers from the township, SSC, area churches, community organizations, local businesspeople and elected officials. While this year’s event didn’t draw as large a crowd due to the inclement weather the spirit of Thanksgiving abounded. Walgreen’s will provide a $7,000 scholarship to a Family Nurse Practitioner in his/her last year of study at GSU. In total, the company has set aside $250,000 in scholarships for FNP students across the country. According to Cathy Moynihan, DNP, FNP-BC, CDE, Market Manager for Walgreen’s Healthcare Clinic/Chicago South, the Family Nurse Practitioner is “the heart and soul of our Nurse Practitioner-based company, a healthcare model committed to promoting patient-centered communication and care. We’re expanding our scope of practice, and opening up a pipeline through which we intend to hire the best and the brightest FNPs from area universities.” Moynihan, herself, is a May 2013 graduate of Governors State University, where she received her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from the College of Health and Human Services. Those f irst pi lg r ims were cer ta in ly thankful simply to have survived, but they were t hank f ul for more t han food and shelter. They recognized God’s providence. In the Bible, the story of Esau and Jacob starts with a meal: a bowl of red soup. Esau was famished and only concerned about sur v iva l. Jacob was look ing for deeper significance. He wanted God’s providence and blessing. It seems that Esau cared little for God’s promises. His grandfather Abraham might have believed God’s promises, but to him they were just words. He ate his red soup, perhaps thankful to have survived; yet the Bible says he despised his birthright. Today, many might identify with Esau. They hear of God’s Ten Commandments or Jesus’ summary of the Law and his promise of life, both abundant and eternal and they say, “It’s just an old story.” And so Paul w rites: “Do not quench

According to Moynihan, the Walgreen’s Healthcare Clinics have a strong network support for new employees and specifically have a “new grad program” in place where employees a re super v ised a nd nurtured by certif ied preceptors. Ongoing clinical satisfaction and progress is assessed using clinical quality measures such as Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS), evidence based guidelines, monthly peer rev iews and ongoing collaborating physician reviews. “There is a tremendous future in retail healthcare and the Walgreen’s family wants to ensure that future FNPs will consider a career with us,” Moynihan said. “With the help of our clinical affiliates, our goal is to provide a wellcoordinated system of more affordable and accessible patient care – with the bottom line goal of improved overall patient outcomes,” Moynihan said. Why you should never walk away from your home

the Spirit; do not despise prophecies” (1 Thessalonians 5:19-20). This Thanksgiving . . . and Christmas, I want to give thanks for both survival and the deeper meaning I find in my faith. Let us give thanks for simple things: employment, paid bills, a warm home, and our family gathered for a meal. But don’t forget to give thanks for deeper things. Psalm 103 says, “Praise the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits – who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagles.” Those first pilgrims gave thanks for more than mere survival. Let us also recognize God’s providence and seek his blessing. Pastor Tom Archer Thorn Creek Reformed Church

ARTHUR V. VEAL IV Even though the media out lets a re say i ng t hat the housing markets have began to improve, I still talk to families that are facing harsh realities when trying to sell their home in todays market. Many families are still forced to look at completing a short sale or some other ty pe of creative sale to get rid of their old home. Most families have all but given up trying to get equity out of their home and many are just happy to sale and get rid of the note. T h is br i ngs me to a point about walking away f rom your home. Ma ny home ow ner s h ave felt that they don’t have any opt ions a nd t hey need to just walk away from a house. You may have tried a short sale and still not been able to sale. Walking away may sometimes seem like the only step left to do. I mean if someone won’t buy your home at a large discount then what other choice do you have. Well I am here to tell you t hat you st i l l have other options. If you walk away f rom you r house t hen you w i l l probably pay a lot more than just the mortgage. You w ill get hit w it h f ines f rom your city or village along w it h ta x consequences. Instead of walking away, consider a deed in lieu to the mortgage company. Or you can consider allowing

a company like We Buy Houses Home Ser v ices to complete a mortgage takeover (shameless plug). A mortgage takeover will avoid a foreclosure on your credit in most cases and it will get you out of that mortgage payment. Banks are doing more to help fa milies, but at the same time they are in business to make money so they only have a limited interest in helping you, the homeowner. If you are not sure about what to do, then get good advice. Don’t ask the bank; ask a qualified professional or an attorney for adv ice. W hatever you do, don’t walk away f rom t hat house. I ca n guarantee you that move will hurt you the most. In today’s market most of the houses that are selling are either owned by a bank or so greatly reduced in price that an investor is i nterested. T hat leaves regular home sellers still holding the bag for a lot of debt and the worst part is t hat you didn’t have to be a n i r respon sible homeowner to have lost equit y. You are litera lly paying for everyone else’s greed. Till next week, Good luck and God Bless and remember… If you want to sell your house on terms check out our informative website at w w w. sellonterms.com for more information.

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: What should I do if I get a very good or full price offer within a few days after I put my home up for sale? Also, Should I try to sell my house at a high price just to “test the waters” and see if I can get it? Answer: Be thankful you just got a full price offer! Most of the time, no one gets an offer that soon, much less a full price offer. Any time you sell real estate and get such a good response, you’re tempted to think that your house is underpriced. This is usually not the case. More than likely, the buyer was already looking for a home like yours, so when it became available, they jumped on it. I am aware of situations where the seller refused such a quick offer, because they thought they must have priced the home too low. In those instances, they waited months before receiv ing another offer. Many

of my colleagues have seen this same situation. Secondly, if you get an offer at or close to your asking price, will you really sell your home? Or will you then think you can get more? I’ve never seen a real estate transaction take place where only one party was motivated. If you’re not really serious about selling your home, don’t put it up for sale. Invariably, you will only waste your own time, your Realtor’s time, and the time of the serious buyer. E-mail us your Real estate questions at: Cathyah@aol.com. Treasured Letters From The Past MARJORIE ALICE DEVRIES My youngest son recent ly made a homemade geography test for my husband and I to take. Apparently, I need to go back to grade school, because I totally failed. So did my husband. “Russia is NOT a continent, Mom!” My son informed me. He reminds me of this fact daily. I w a s r em i nde d of t hat when read ing t he f ol lo w i n g le t t e r f r om Sgt. Robert Buetow. He “informs” his wife that the movie they saw together was not “Cra z y House” like she thought. Oh, the power of being right! Sg t. Rober t Buetow s er v e d w it h t he 5 4t h Armored Field Artiller y Batta lion, stat ioned in F r a n c e d u r i n g 19 4 4 . Here’s a letter he wrote to his wife: July 2, 1944 My only sweetheart, Another lonely Sunday away from you is slowly g o i n g b y, b u t it w a s brightened quite a bit by your two air-mail letters which I received today. It wa s certainly thought f ul of you to remember to get something for Dad for Father’s Day. I’m sure he appreciated it. Your fears are groundless, honey, ‘cause I definitely am not the wounded Yank you saw in the picture in the paper. The only wound I have is a cut finger I got opening a

can, and that’s practically healed up by now! T he picture (movie) you mentioned in your l et t er w a sn’t “C ra z y House.” It was the picture you and I saw when we were in Pittsburgh. I don’t recall the name of it, but I remember the part you mentioned. Don’t worry, mommy, I’ll be f ully capable of handling all the love you have stored up for me when I get home. You’re really a darling for taking such good care of my clothes for me. I consider myself the luckiest guy in the world because I have you for my wife. Midge told Eddie her folks both liked you a lot, so I’m proud of you for that. Honey, how about sending me a couple of cans of orange juice in your next package, or would they be too heavy? T hat ’s about all for today, sweetheart. I’ll close now with all my love and a million kisses. Future of a Turkey RENEE N. HALE, DSL You r T h a n k s g i v i n g Day turkey took a journey to get to your table! Many pe ople a long t he w ay planned and implemented with the future in mind to make the turkey available for purchase—and then— cook s at home used st r ateg ic pla n n i ng for the advance organizing of the festive turkey meal without thinking twice ! Con sider t he fou r day weekend associated with Thanksgiv ing: travel to and from a destination, t he s p e c i a l me a l, t he footba l l ga mes, t he activities on the day after T ha n k sg iv i ng, a nd t he we ekend t hat fol low s. To top it off, travel for the Sunday after Thanksgiving is declared heaviest of the year by the Bureau of Transportation S t a t i s t i c s , w i t h 1 3 .7 m i l l ion lon g- d i s t a nc e t r ips. If one applies strategic foresight a n d e n d-v i s i o n i n g t o t he prepa rat ion of t he T h a n k s g i v i n g t u r k e y, it’s sure to be a success. Furthermore, one can use this process of planning for any other aspect of the Thanksgiving festivities. Ta ke adva ntage of t his ent husia st ic hol iday

pla n n i ng approach to cata lyze your ever yday work and leadership, too! First, v isua lize in your mind the finished turkey just the way you want it to be. Perfectly browned, rest i ng on a beaut i f u l plat ter— fol lowe d by “o o h s a n d a a h h s” o f satisfied guests. This final outcome, or end-vision, is what you aim for and must be cr ystal clear in your mind. Next, plan backwards from this ideal end-vision! What is necessary to reach the step right before the turkey is done and served? Certainly it will have been in the oven baking, and you will have prepared the platter for serving. What details need to be in place for t hat step to occur? What about the step right before t hat? W hat k ind of preparation must take place t hen? Neighbor 2 Neighbor JANICE MINTON-KUTZ is now a Brownie Scout. Jen loves animals and fondly tends to her two ducks and her Bishon Frisze puppy. Some of her favorite things to do include playing with her American Girl Doll and video games with her sisters and Daddy, Spencer L Minton Jr. Like her sisters, she wants to be a veterinarian when she grows up! Happy Birthday darling Jennifer. *** HAPPY RETIREMENT TO FRED FATA OF THE ILLINOIS SECRETARY OF STATE’S OFFICE: Fred has been with the SS office for many years and spent much time in the Bridgeview office. He will be feted at 115 Bourbon Street in Alsip, Il on December 27th, 2013. Now with retirement on the horizon, Fred will have more time to spend with his charming wife Sheron and time for a round of golf with his son, Brian. Blessings and Happy Retirement Fred! ***

TIMOTHY TEGGE MAGIC SHOW COMES TO ST. COLUMBA: The St. Columba parish center was turned into a Big Top stage on Friday November 22nd, as Timothy Noel Tegge and his talented wife Barbara wowed the audience with sleight of hand illusions, puppetry and magic tricks. This is part of the parish’s new programming which brings in entertainment for all to enjoy and sample some of what St. Columba Church has to offer. Newer pastor Fr. Charles Watkins (he has been at the helm of St. Columba for a little more than a year now, taking over when Fr. Jim Nalen died) and the newly formed parish councils are seeking ways to entice more worshipers to come to St. Columba--that it is not all scripture and seriousness but also family entertainment and fun. The two hour show given by the Tegge’s was a huge hit with laughter and amazement all around. Tim Tegge was born into a show business atmosphere, first going on stage as a clown at age 5. His wife of many years, Barbara, is herself, a third generation performer. Together, their shared experiences in circus, theater, cabaret and night club entertainment all came to bear at St. Columba last week. St. Columba also plays host to Trivia nights, Advent Taize Prayer Service and is preparing for the upcoming holiday season with Advent Scripture Series, Community Thanksgiving Day Dinner, Christmas, New Year’s. For more information about St. Columba Church, 134th and Avenue O, in the Hegewisch neighborhood of Chicago, go to their web site at www.columba-chi.org or ‘like’ them on Facebook: www.facebook.com/ columbaparish. ***
