The day had finally come. Crowds of people were gathered at the outer gate of the Kingdom anticipating the arrival of the King. A flurry of questions filled the air, “When will the King arrive?” “How do I look?” “Am I presentable?” “Do you think He’ll be pleased with our service?” A trumpet sounds, and the crowd quiets as the King makes his way forward. He pauses and looks over the crowd. Then he with his attendants walk through the gathering of people. Some he directs to the left of the kingdom’s gate, and others he directs to the right of the gate. When he had divided the people into two groups, he returned to his place at the entrance gate to the kingdom. To the group on his right the King says, “When I was hungry you fed me, when I was thirsty you gave me something to drink, when I was an out of town visitor you showed me hospitality, when I was naked you gave me clothes, when I was sick you visited and cared for me until I recovered, and when I was incarcerated, you came to see me. Because of what you did for me, I give you my kingdom to live in forever.” They responded, “Lord, when did we see you hungry and fed you, thirsty and

gave you something to drink, an out of town visitor and showed you hospitality, naked and dressed you, sick and visited and cared for you till you recovered, and when were you incarcerated and we came to see you?” “Truly I tell you,” the King said, “When you did it to the ‘least’ of my brothers, you did it for me.” To the group to the King’s left he said, “Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels for you did not help me and care for me as those to my right did.” The ‘least’ important (insignificant) people are important to God. How many non-prominent struggling single moms and families, elderly shut-ins, terminal and/or chronic sick persons do you know within your community God is calling you to serve? When was the last time you showed hospitality to someone new to your church or place of employment, or gave shelter to the homeless? Have you ever volunteered with a prison ministry to share your faith with an inmate? What will the King say to you when He returns? Q. We asked a Realtor to come to our home and tell us what we needed to do to sell our home. He said so many negative things that we don’t know if anyone will buy it. What are your suggestions? A. Did your Realtor offer suggestions to improve the salability of your home? When a Realtor walks through your home, they should give you a list of things that you need to do to make your home more appealing to buyers. We know what buyers want and expect in a home because we receive feedback from buyers on all of our home listings. We pass on this list of buyer wants and desires to our clients. This information can be very helpful in the selling of the home. T hese sug gest ions ra nge f rom i nex pensive to more ex pensive. We recommend that the seller review the list to see what items fit their budget. If they cannot afford to do the upgrades, then this can usually be overcome by adjusting the sales price accordingly. By updates, we mean flooring, painting, Easley Painting & Staining. Interior-Exterior, drywall, taping, plumbing, electrical, carpentry, water damage, window glazing, pressure washing, deck refinishing. Q u a l i t y w o r k m a n s h i p, s e n i o r d i s c o u n t s. Fre e estimates. 708-758-3241

cleaning, decluttering, kitchen and bath improvements, etc. The roof, furnace and central air are expected to be in safe working order and NOT at the end of their life expectancy. Why? Because most buyers a re not going to spend over $10,000 within the first year or two to have all these components replaced. They cannot afford to do this so they will move on to the next home that has newer components. The objective is to get the home sold for the best possible price and in the least amount of time. Follow our list of suggestions, then objective accomplished! BOB KRYGSHELD Now t hat we a re i n the heart of the holiday sea son, you may be thinking about ways you can put your money where your heart is. Specifically, you might be pondering which groups you should support with charitable gifts. And as long as you choose groups that meet the right criteria, your generosit y can a lso be rewarding to you, in the form of tax benefits. To begin w it h, you’ll want to make sure you are giving to a reputable c h a r i t y. T h a t m e a n s you’ll need to ask some q u e s t ion s . Ho w d o e s a g r ou p m e a s u r e i t s ef fectiveness? Is it devoting as much of its contributions as possible to the actual work of the or ga n i z at ion, or i s it spending too much money on administrative costs? Generally, a worthwhile charity should spend at least 75% of its income on programs. You may be able to find this type of i n for mat ion on a charitable group’s annual report and its website. You can also go to the website of one of t he agencies that evaluates charitable groups. On these sites, you can get a lot of information dealing with a charity’s ef fect iveness, i ncome, spending and other topics. After you’ve identified a charity, or charities, you ca n decide how much you want to give and how you want to give it. If the charity has 501(c)(3) status (named after the section of the Internal Revenue Code that governs such g roups), you r g if t ca n offer you a tax deduction. So, for example, if you are in the 25% tax bracket, and you give $1,000 to a qualified charity, you can subtract the $1,000 f rom you r adjusted gross income, which will result in ta x savings of $250. Upon making your gift, make sure you get a receipt that lists the name

of the organization and the date and amount of your contribution. (Your maximum deduction will be limited to a percentage of your adjusted g ross income.) You can do more than si mply w r ite a check, howe ver. I f you h ave stocks that have grown sig n i f ica nt ly i n va lue, you may want to donate t hem to a c h a r it a ble group. You will be allowed a cha ritable deduction for the full fair market value of the gift on the date of the transfer, even if your original cost was only a fraction of today’s value. Furthermore, you w i l l avoid t he capita l gains taxes you’d have to pay if you sold the stock, provided you’ve held the stock for at least a year. If you do cont r ibute appreciated stocks, y ou w i l l w a nt t o b e cognizant of the effect of your donation on your portfolio. If you were to give a sizable amount of growth-oriented stocks, w ou l d i t a f f e c t y ou r overall growth potential? Conversely, i f you a re pr i ma r i ly g iv i ng away relatively conser vative, income-producing stocks, would it end up moving your portfolio in a riskier direction? When donating stocks, if at all possible try to do so in a way that does not harm your portfolio’s balance. In any case, whether you give cash or appreciated a sset s, you’l l need to make your gift by Dec. 31 if you’re going to deduct it on your 2016 taxes. So be as generous as you can afford, think about the effect of your gift on your own financial situation – and be prepared to act soon. JUDITH PADGETT achieve the above. Ultimately, we can take as our prime ex a mple Jesus, Jesus wa s a l l about building relationships. He never treated people like they were projects. He enjoyed people and lived in the moment He was fully present and available to whomever needed His attention. He also knew how to celebrate the milestone moments in people’s lives. (John 2: 1, 2) He also grieved with people who were grieving. He cried with Martha and Mary at Lazarus’s graveside. He understood the anguish of a widow burying her only son. (Luke 7: 11-15) He wanted a personal relationship with Martha and Mary more than He wanted their service. (Luke 10:3841) He met people at their point of need as He healed and fed the multitudes. (Matthew 14:14-18) He had no script to recite he listened to where people were at and asked probing questions to help them on their spiritual journey. He never gave people deadlines, or tried to force a decision upon them that they were not ready to make. He trusted that God would do a work in their heart, if their heart was open. We would do well to heed His example after all, it is His name that we are to proclaim and He was never intrusive or insensitive, may we follow in His footsteps. (Colossians 3:17)

We have an innate desire to share what is dearest to our heart. Yet, how we share will determine the outcome. Recently I came across a passage that made me consider the approach we sometimes take we are encouraged to gently and respectfully share our faith when asked. (1 Peter 3: 15, 16) We are also to respect the faith of others and to never try to force our faith on others who hold to a different belief system. Yet, I came across another passage that gave me pause to think. The book of Luke (14:15-24), encourages us to compel others to share our faith, compel is to urge or persuade, to share when asked, is a passive stance. However, to persuade is active, at first glance the two appear to be at odds with one another, yet I believe they build on each other. We are encouraged to go out into the highways and by ways and compel….I believe that we can do the above by living our ever yday life: teaching a Sunday school class, working in a food pantry, giving to Christian based organizations who a re building bridges of fa it h in developing countries, by meeting people at t heir point of need. Building a nd maintaining relationships that is not contingent upon a shared faith. Loving people where they are and being sensitive to their needs are a few ways that we can

Echoes of Pompeii Laser Light Show Theatre at the Center’s celebrates New Year’s Eve and the arrival of 2017 with a live performance by the popular Pink Floyd tribute band Echoes of Pompeii which will include a magnificent laser light show experience. Rock group Pink Floyd was always known for presenting high intensity visual effects along with its powerful music and intriguing sound effects. This evening with Echoes of Pompeii will recreate that incredible concert experience. Echoes of Pompeii will perform many great songs from the band’s repertoire, made famous by the original artists. The laser light show and video special effects will make it a full-on sensory experience. For anyone who loves classic rock music, there is no better way to ring in the New Year. “We wanted to kick it up a notch for New Year’s Eve, so we have added a more comprehensive laser light show than we have ever done before,” said Jeremy Andrews the group’s founder. “We want to give people the quintessential Pink Floyd concert experience that so many of us remember as being truly life-changing.” Echoes of Pompeii is considered by many to be one of the best Pink Floyd tribute groups in the country. Based in Gary, Indiana, the 10-piece band thrills audiences with

The band incorporates video projections, sound effects and other Floyd-like elements to take audience members on a mysterious journey through the five decade career of one of rock’s most beloved groups. The holiday season is a great time to sell your home! Ok, you need to sell your home. While this might be true, I am here to tell you some really great reasons you should make the effort to put (or keep) your home on the market during the most wonderful time of the year! 1. Bungling Bureaucracy WOODROW WILCOX November 15, 2016 was a special day. In addition to my normal administrative duties, I spent most of the day (over four hours) helping two clients with medical bill problems. I helped a client from Chicago who got a bill for $700. I checked and lea r ned t hat Med ica re never sent t he cla i m s informat ion to his i n s u r a n c e c o m p a n y. I t y ped a letter to t he Medical Service Provider to advise its staff of this and requested that it send certain essential claims information directly to t he cl ient ’s i n su ra nce company for processing the payment. When that is done, the client will owe nothing. Thus, I saved the client $700. I also helped a senior cit i zen woma n f rom Gary, Indiana. This was one of the most twisted cases t hat I have ever worked. T he Med ica re bureaucracy, the doctor, the insurance company, the Treasury Department, a nd a bill collector a ll made mistakes. But, here are the two main sources of t he pr oblem s t h at caused the chain reaction. First, for over a year and a half Medicare failed to enter into the record an i mpor ta nt docu ment that was fa xed to it by an insurance company. S e c o n d , t h e d o c t o r ’s office filed claims with both Medicare and the car accident insurance company and then did not reimburse Medicare for the conditional payments. T h e d o c t or c ol l e c t e d money f rom Medica re, the car insurance company for the medical claims, and the Medicare supplement i nsu ra nce compa ny for cla i ms related to a car accident. The doctor did not return money to Medicare which it paid conditionally, but kept bot h t hat money a nd t h e m one y f r om t he pr iv ate i n su r a nc e compa nies – FOR THE SAME CLAIMS. Medica re wa nted it s cond it iona l ly pa id cla ims money back a f ter it lea r ned t hat t he c a r a c c ident h a d been sett led. Medicare a nd t he U.S. Trea su r y Department went after the senior citizen from Gar y instead of ask ing the doctor to return the money that Medicare paid conditionally. Remember, the doctor got paid twice for certain claims. But, Me d ic a r e w a nt e d t he senior citizen to repay the money that the doctor’s office kept. I was so upset by how badly Medicare handled the case of the woman from Gary that the next day I applied for a job w it h t he newly elected President Donald Trump administration. I asked for a job in which I could teach bureaucrats how to reason logically and rationally. If you like that idea, contact the Trump transition team and tell t hem h i r i ng Wood row Wilcox would be a good idea. Note: Woodrow Wilcox i s t he sen ior me d ic a l bi l l case worker at Sen ior Ca re Insu ra nce Services in Merrillville, India na. He has saved clients of that insurance agency over one million dol la rs by f ig ht ing m ista kes a nd f raud i n the Medicare system. He wrote the book SOLVING MEDIC A RE PROBLEM$ and posts articles at www. WoodrowWilcox.com.

Overcoming Your Credit Card Crisis The battle with credit card debt can be a constant struggle against high interest rates and monthly payments that never seem to make a dent in what you owe. How is it possible to make monthly credit card payments and never get anywhere? This problem is caused by high interest rates that eats up most of your payments. Even though you make your minimum payment, you don’t make much headway eliminating the debt. Luckily, there’s a way to find debt relief without incurring more debts. Using certified credit counseling like Consolidated Credit, you can get

professional advice to identify the right solution for your needs. A certified credit counselor can review your options to see which solution is best for you. You can qualify for lower interest rates or even eliminate them, while consolidating your credit card debt into one easy payment to get you out of debt faster. Every financial institution differs, but most people see a reduction of total payments by up to 30-50% as they pay off debt faster. Freedom from debt can become a reality!

Hammer Toes Hammer toes are actually a curling of the toes. Sometimes these are flexible and can be straightened with manipulation, or fixed which means they are always curled with arthritic changes that don’t allow straightening. Many times corns are found on the tops of these toes. Surgery can be performed to straighten these toes or occasional trimming of the corns can alleviate some of the pain. If you have any questions concerning hammer toes or any other problems, please stop by or call my office during office hours.

SOU T H HOL L A ND R ESIDEN T C E L E BR AT E S 10 7 Y E A R S : Surrounded by many of her 2nd, 3rd and 4th generation relatives, 107 year old Annie Davis is pictured being feted here by some of those relatives and Brenda Johnson, the Director of the Among Friends Adult Day care in Glenwood. Born on November 23rd, 1909 in Johnstown, Mississippi. A n n ie i s at c enter w it h Brenda standing behind her and at left her Granddaughter Emma Powell with whom she lives in South Holland, her great granddaughter Sharon Gilmore of Chicago, Maude Green a family friend of Harvey and Germaine Powell, great grandson. Annie attributes her long life to having a bottle of Coors Lite once a day and of course to her great genes which allowed this long and wonderful life she has been living. Annie lives at home with her family in South Holland and during the day enjoys her time at Among Friends Adult Day Care, which picks her up each morning and brings her home each evening. In between she has 3 meals and all the company she wants. The play card games and Bingo and celebrate the seasons, getting ready for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Happy Birthday Annie Davis!! *** THE LI V ING CHRISTM AS TREE-HOME FOR CHRISTMAS : Pe r f or m a n c e s a t t h e Ne w L i f e C h r i st ia n C hu rch, 1829 C ent r a l Avenue, Whiting, Indiana. CHURCHES TOGETHER AT THANKSGIVING: Pictured here on the altar of Assumption Greek church in Hegewisch are the pastors of several local parishes: Rev. H. Frank Showers, Leba non Lut hera n Church-ELC A; Rev. Jim Galuhn, East Side United Methodist Church; Fr. James Doyle, Assumption Greek Orthodox Church; Fr. Charles Wat k ins, St. Columba Roman Catholic Church and George Papaioannou, President of Assumption Greek Orthodox Church. Following the Thanksgiving Worship ser vice on T ha n k sg iv i ng Eve, November 23rd, 2016 the assemblage went to the soci9al gathering room in the church basement for some delicious lovingly home made Greek pastries! One of the readings that evening came from a Thanksgiving Proclamation by President Abraham Lincoln on October 3rd, 1863 declaring a day (the last Thursday of November) to be devoted exclusively by the American people in Thanksgiving for the bounty of the land and as a peaceful solvent to the civil strife going on in the country at that time. Those who attended the event were thankful and happy to have been part of such a moving and topical service especially in light of our own struggles at present. Blessing to all on the altar and in the pews! ***

S T. C OLU M B A DI SH E S U P THANKSGIVING MEALS TO LOCAL RESIDENTS : If you were alone on Thanksgiving anywhere on the South East Side, you were invited to come and dine at the St. Columba Church table, 134th and Avenue O from Noon to 2 p.m. Church volunteers working with Pastor Fr. Charles Watkins fed well over 100 persons there and many via home delivered meals for those who could not get out and come to the church. Fr. Charles was assisted in prayer by Lebanon Lutheran Rev. H. Frank Showers before the meal. Pictured in one photo ser ving are Former 10th Ward A lderman John Pope and his daughter Maddie talking to one of t he Tha nksgiv ing tea m members Clara Gadzinski. In another, Frs. Watkins and Showers say pre meal prayers and tell a few Thanksgiving jokes. It was a wonderful experience for who attended, this reporter as well. Happy Thanksgiving to all and we in this great country have much to be Thankful for.
