The Purdue University Northwest Fall 2016 painting class at the Hammond locat ion w i l l be t he f irst class to organize their own art show at the CHESS Art Gallery December 8 from 6-8 p.m. on 6725 Kennedy Ave. in Hammond. This also marks the first time the university has offered a painting class that features many different stylistic techniques for painting such as Sumi painting, fresco painting and other modernist types. Shari LeMonnier, the professor of the class who has taught art for over 20 years while traveling around the world, said it was exciting as a teacher to watch students who may have had some insecurities about their skill level develop into working artists. “What we would like to do is present [the work] in the gallery so that the rest of the school can get an insight on the things that we’re studying in the class, and also the really great quality of the painting that the students have been producing,” LeMonnier said. T he s how w i l l fe at u r e a l a r ge mural on the back wall of the gallery that highlights a collaborative effort from all of the students in the class combined. LeMonnier said that the idea for the mural came from student Haley Smith and deals with global warming and environmental issues. “It lend s it sel f to d i f ferent interpretations on the same surface plane so that as different students are working on the same piece, the styles will blend naturally because they’re w or k i ng w it h t he s a me t heme,” LeMonnier said. “Since we don’t know

Give A Gift Of Scholarship This Holiday Season The South Suburban College Foundation (SSCF) is seeking year-end gifts from those who wish to help make a difference in the lives of local college students in need of financial assistance. The SSCF Scholarship Donor Drive will continue through the end of the year, providing both a charitable gift opportunity and tax-deduction for all donors. The SSCF support provides scholarship assistance each year to many students who otherwise would be unlikely to begin or complete their college education. Onehundred percent (100%) of Donor Drive donations benefit scholarship and student assistance funds. Whether in support of a hig h school g raduate, a n unemployed resident looking for a career change, or a single parent pursuing their college degree

for the first time, the SSCF offers scholarship assistance to all students in need. Helping students achieve their college dream can give them the tools to improve their lives and their communities. All scholarship contributions to the SSCF are 100% tax-deductible (TIN: 23-7191738). The SSCF staff works cooperatively with individuals and organizations to develop a donor plan of any level. New scholarships c a n a l so be est abl i shed w it h a $750 donation. The SSCF has set a fundraising goal of $200,000 for Fiscal Year 2016-17 to support student success. GOD WITH US

A Celebration of Love ANNA M. CAISON I once read an interesting article about a cancelled wedding dinner that reminded me of a parable Jesus told about a Great Supper. The article spoke of a couple who had planned an elaborate wedding and dinner for their daughter. Forty days before the ceremony, the wedding was called off. The parents were upset to hear that the lavish gathering they had planned and paid for at the Villa Christian Catering Hall was not going to happen. Then, according to t he article, they had a “genius and generous idea.” They inv ited 200 of the cit y’s homeless to enjoy the 4-course meal that would have been part of their daughter’s wedd i ng recept ion ; rena m i ng it, a “Celebration of Love.” In Jesus’ parable of the Great Supper, a certain man had planned a dinner for a large number of guests who had RSVP that they were coming. However, when the supper was ready none of the invited ca me ; each ma k i ng a n excuse t hat something suddenly came up and they wouldn’t be able to make it. So the man

sent his servants to invite the poor, the sick, the socially dispossessed and others to attend the supper, filling every seat at the table. A lthough the circumstances of the cancelled wedding and the parable of the Great Supper are different, the outcome of both demonstrates God’s love for all of humanity. As a nation, and as the church, we need to be very careful how we treat those who are less fortunate than we are. One of the charges God brought against Israel that resulted in His judgment against His chosen people was their injustice and oppression of the poor. Every person has a story. And if we’re not careful, God may allow one of their stories to become our story to humble us and to show us that all that we have is because of His grace and mercy, and not because we are better or are more worthy. For questions and/or comments send an email to anna.a62@yahoo.com . Or you can write me at: Anna Caison, P.O. Box 529, Lansing, IL 60438.

Local Caterer/Restaurant Owner Still In Business After Thirty Years! I asked Jim, owner of Jimbooos, why he thinks his business has been such a success for so long? He jokingly replied, “LUCK and being very blessed!”, but then he quickly gave credit to his father and grandmother who urged him to “keep up with the service and quality of his business.” Along with the service and quality, I noticed that his prices are very reasonable. When I asked how they are able to keep the prices so low he said that the volume they produce is massive. If you have ever visited one of Jim’s restaurants you know it is not uncommon to see him sitting at his desk with more than one phone line going. “My job has evolved over the years into more of an administrative roll. I am the only one who books all the catering, with that being said I am so busy booking catering jobs all day that I don’t have time for much else.” When talking

to Jim I noticed how much he talked about his staff. “This is by far the best crew I’ve ever had! I have passed on all my recipes to my cooks who, if anything, have only improved the quality of our products.” It appears that the staff at Jimbooos is more than JUST staff; they work together more like a big family. As a long time customer, they make you feel right at home, as if you were also a part of the family. When I finally asked Jim if he ever thinks about retirement, he told me, “I absolutely love what I do. It is a thought that rarely ever comes to mind.” He jokingly went on to say, “Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to hit the Lotto and be able to retire.” I’ve grown up on Jimbooos food for as long as I can remember and I truly hope he is around for another thirty years so I can continue to enjoy it with my family.

Question: We accepted an offer on our home. We feel the buyer got the best of the deal. Now, after the home inspection, they are asking for us to repair a light switch, repair an outlet with reverse polarity and replace a cracked ceramic tile piece in the kitchen. We feel we have come down enough in price and we do not want to do anything. What is your opinion?

Answer: Back when it was a sel ler’s market, buyers wouldn’t dare ask ing for minor issues in fear the seller would move on to the next buyer. Unfortunately, in most areas, it is a buyer’s market and most buyers feel they are in control of the situation. There are no perfect homes, but many buyers are not aware of this, so they feel that many, if not all of the inspection issues should be fixed. Most real estate contracts state that only safety and major issues are part of the home inspection contingency. If this inspection request

really bothers you, then consult with your attorney on your options or just tell the buyer’s no and your reason. If the buyers want the home badly enough they will agree and drop their request. You asked my opinion. I’d fix the reverse polarity since it is a safety issue. I would also fix the other minor items and be thankful nothing more costly was found in the home inspection. The objective was to sell your home and move on to the next part of your life. Fix the minor items and the objective will be accomplished. On December 8t h, just one day later the United States Congress declared w a r a n d t h e Un i t e d States wa s of f icia l ly a combatant in World War 2. Many families would be separated from their loved ones for years at a time and many of their fathers, sons and husbands would never ret u r n. He’s Got Our Back I am a small and precious child, my dad is being sent to fight... The only place I’ll see his face, is in my dreams at night. He will be gone too many days for my young mind to keep track. I may be sad, but I am proud. My daddy’s got your back... I am a caring mother. My son is going to war... My mind is f illed w it h

worries that I have never known before. Everyday I try to keep my t houghts f rom turning black. I may be scared, but I am proud...My son has got your back... I am a strong and loving wife, with a husband soon to go. T h e r e a r e t i m e s I ’m terrified in a way most never know. I bite my lip, and force a smi le as I watch my husband pack... My heart may break, but I am proud...My husband’s got your back... I am a soldier...ser v ing proudly, standing tall. I fight for freedom, yours and mine, by answering this call. I do my job while knowing the thanks it sometimes lacks. Say a prayer that I’ll come home. It’s me who’s got your back... - Author Unknown Sincerely, Arlo Kallemeyn Publisher P.S. Speaking Of Seniors

Saved Hobart Man $3,710 WOODROW WILCOX On November 29, 2016, I helped an 84 year old client save $ 3,710. The cl ient is f rom Hoba r t, Indiana. He brought a bill that he had received from a local medical clinic. The bill said that he owed $3,710 – now. I checked w it h h is Me d ic a r e s upplement insu ra nce compa ny to learn what it knew of the bi l l. It repor ted t hat a claim for $4,049 was filed but that Medicare refused to cover $ 3,710 of t he claim. So, I had ou r cl ient join me in my office so t h at w e c ou ld phone Medicare together. I told the client that I suspected that we would learn that the local medical clinic had filed the claim for $ 3,710 incorrect ly. If a claim is filed incorrectly, Medicare automatically refuses to cover it. I n ou r c onver s at ion w it h t he Medica re representative, we learned that I was correct. T he cla i m was f i led incorrectly. I asked for the written proof of that to be sent to our client. He will bring that to me to copy when he gets it. I wrote a letter to the loca l med ica l clin ic to in for m t hem of t he m ista ke a nd tel l t hem w h a t t he y ne e de d t o do to fix the problem so that the claim could be accepted and processed by Med ica re. I helped our client, but in a way, I helped the medical clinic,

too. This k ind of mista ke h a pp en s a l l ov er t he country on a daily basis. If no one helps the senior cit i zen to f ind a nd f i x the problem, the senior cit i zen on Medica re is hounded until a bill that is not really owed is paid by t he innocent senior citizen. How sad. In past articles, I have given my estimate t hat mista kes in the Medicare system cost sen ior cit i zens throughout our country over one billion dollars a year in false medical bills. Fortunately, I was able to protect our client from the $3,710 mistake. All the help that I gave this client was FREE OF CH A RGE. T he ow ners, ma nagers, a nd sta f f of ou r i n su r a nc e agenc y really do care about our sen ior cit i z en cl ient s. We “go the extra mile” to protect our senior clients from such problems. Does your insurance agent or agency give this high level of service to senior citizen clients? If not, why not? Note: Woodrow Wilcox i s t he sen ior me d ic a l bi l l case worker at Sen ior Ca re Insu ra nce Services in Merrillville, India na. He has saved clients of that insurance agency over one million dol la rs by f ig ht ing m ista kes a nd f raud i n the Medicare system. He wrote the book SOLVING MEDIC A RE PROBLEM$ and posts articles at www. WoodrowWilcox.com.

Time for a Yearend Investment Review BOB KRYGSHELD With the holiday season upon us, you may well be busier t ha n usua l. However, by spend i ng a few minutes reviewing your investment scenario of this past year, you can see where you’ve been, where you might be going, and what you need to do to keep moving forward towa rd your long-term financial goals. Pay close attention to these elements of your investment picture: • Performance – Reviewing your investment performance over time is important in helping you determine if you’re on t rack to ach ieve y ou r f i n a nc i a l go a l s . Ask yourself some key questions: How did your investments do relative to their performance in past years? If there was a big difference, what might have accounted for it? Were your returns relevant to your long-term goals? In ot her words, if you have already established a return rate you’ll need to reach your goals – and you should indeed set such a rate – were your actual returns “on track” to help you make progress toward you r objec t ives ? A nd, just as importantly, were your return expectations realistic? • Investment mix – If you a re a di ligent investor following a well-designed st rateg y, you probably started out in 2016 with a n invest ment mi x t hat ref lects you r r isk tolerance, time horizon, and short- and long-term goa l s. But over t i me, your investment mix can cha nge. If you ow ned a certain percentage of an asset, such as growth stocks, and those stocks appreciated i n pr ice substantially, they could take up a larger percentage of your por t folio t ha n

you had intended, thereby exposing you to a higher risk level than that with which you are c om f or t a b l e . S o n o w that the year is coming to a close, examine your investment mix to see if it needs “rebalancing.” • C ont r i but ion le v el s – A re you t a k i ng f u l l advantage of your 401(k) o r o t h e r e m p l o y e rs p on s or e d r et i r ement p l a n ? S p e c i f ic a l l y, i f you got a raise this past year, did you boost your cont r ibut ion s to you r plan? The more you invest now, the less likely it will be that you have to play “catch up” in the years immediately preceding your retirement. • Mistakes – We all make mistakes in every walk of life – including the way we invest. In looking back over 2016, can you spot some investment mistakes you might have made? Did you temporarily “bail out” on investing immediately after the “Brex it” vote, only to find, a few weeks later, that the markets had soared to record highs? Did you act on impulse and buy a so-called “hot” stock that turned out to be inappropriate for your needs and risk level? While mistakes like these might be costly in the short term, they can ultimately prove invaluable – if you learn from them. We’re just about ready to turn the page on the 2016 calendar. So, as you review your investment decisions for the past year, try to determine what worked, what didn’t – and what you can do to improve your results in 2017. Personal Trainer to the Real Estate Consumer

‘Tis The Season For Serious Buyers MIKE BUDER This week I was on a listing appointment and the client asked, “Should I w a it u nt i l a f ter t he holidays to list my home”? I have a l so had some sellers in the past call and say “no more show ings until after the holidays”. T he hol idays cou ld be the best time of the year to have you r home on the market! People who look for homes this time of the year are SERIOUS BU Y E R S a nd not ju st out there to wear down your carpets. W ho else wou ld ta ke t hei r t i me to come look at a home i n t h is hect ic t i me of year, A SERIOUS BUYER OF COU RSE . A nd… what better time to let t h e m s e e y ou r h om e b e aut i f u l l y de c or at e d for the holidays. Buyers a re more emot iona l during the holidays and you r coz y wa r m home ca n cause emot ions in a buyer you c a n’t get other times of the year. Serious buyers also have fewer homes to choose from during the holiday season, which means less competition for you and possibly a higher offering price. Starting in January there will be more homes com i ng to t he ma rket every day. Keep in mind t h e i n c r e a s e d s u pp l y heading into the spring

market without an equal increase in demand can cause pr ices to ta ke a dip again. Buyers have more time to look for a home with time off work during the holidays and winter vacation breaks. People stay home more i n colder weat her a nd online searches go way up. Traditiona lly many people have job transfers at the end of the year and t hey need to f ind new homes and won’t be able to wa it unt i l spring to buy. Some people want to buy before the end of the year for tax reasons. If you a re pla nning to purchase another home, by selling now you could be a non-contingent buyer in the spring when many more homes are available for possibly less money. Maybe you will be able to enjoy the rest of the season knowing you sold your house because you didn’t put of f show ing you r home du r i ng t he more hectic time of the year! EIHINGER VFW POST 8141 DISHES UP PASTA DINNERS FOR ALL : Veterans and their guests turned out in droves for a wonderful pasta dinner catered by John’s Pizza in Munster Wednesday November 30, 2016 at the post banquet hall, Hirsch Avenue in Calumet City. Pictured here are some of the guests who enjoyed the all you can eat pasta: Attorney George Petrich of Burnham and his wife Rose, and Coach Gerr y Munda and his w ife Lori, t heir son Patrick, along with now retired Thornton Fractional North teachers, Margaret and Warren Housinger of Lansing. Coach Munda is a celebrated icon and sports figure in and around the south suburbs, having coached many sports for many years at the Ca lumet Cit y High School. Lori Munda is a published author and beauty consultant and is active with the Calumet City Historical Society. The Petrich’s are also active with the Historical Society. Festivities livened up when Post Member and pasta coordinator Tom Maszuski came into the hall from the kitchen wearing a Santa hat and red suspenders, very much the ‘jolly old elf,’ and greeted the diners present. In addition to the delicious pasta dinners, Marilyn Schultz of t he Auxiliary made her special cruellers for the occasion. The Post plans to have a pasta dinner like this on the months that have 5 Wednesdays. The next dinner will be on Wednesday March 29th, 2017. *** HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO GLENN TRILLER AND SPENCER MINTON: The birthday boys have close bir t hdays--Glenn’s is December 5t h a nd Spencer’s is December 6th and this year both plan to spend their special days with family and friends at the farm. Glenn is this reporter’s youngest brother and Spencer is my beloved son. Also in on the fun for the birthdays will be Spencer’s four daughters, 20 year old twins, Alex and Christina, 18 year old Julie Anna and 11 year old Jennifer Danielle. Everyone loves to cook so there will be one big pot luck dinner made of personal favorites and of course an ice cream cake and the special Holland Crème cake from Walt’s Y UM! Christmas is only a few weeks away so there will be hints given as to who is getting what for the holiday. For me, their presence is my present! Love them all! *** CHR IST M A S IN C A LUMET CIT Y STARTS WITH TREE LIGHTING AND REINDEER: On Friday December 2nd, 2016, starting at 6 p.m. the annual Tree lighting took place, with carolers and candy canes, Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus and hot chocolate at Veteran’s Park. This

is a favorite with Calumet City Mayor Michel le Ma rk iew icz Qua l k inbush especially given that her reindeer will be on hand for cookies, petting and photos. The reindeer come from a farm in Southern Illinois and are in much demand this holiday season. They are smaller than one would imagine and not like those seen on screen and in kid’s story books. But, they are lovable creatures that make you want to take one home. The Mayor says each year that she wants one for her Calumet City back yard. “I’ll build a little barn just for him,” she teases. City ordinances would prevent this, but it’s fun to think about! *** C A LUMET CIT Y CH A MBER OF COMMERCE HOLIDAY LUNCHEON A N D I NSTA L L AT ION : T he a n nua l event ta kes place t h is Wed nesday December 7,th 2016 at American Legion Post 330, 950 Legion Drive in Calumet City starting at 11:30 a.m. Dinner of delicious fried chicken, sausage and peppers, potatoes, green beans, salad and home made pazki for dessert all by Julie, cash bar, and fun and games all with a Christmas theme precede the installation of officers by Mayor Michelle.
