Question: I got behind in paying my debts, and now I’m being hounded by an aggressive, abusive debt collector. What are my rights? Answer: For the fourth consecutive year, consumer debt complaints in 2011 ranked No. 1 on the Illinois Attorney General’s annual top 10 list of complaints. Of the nearly 5,900 debt-related complaints, more than 1,100 were made against debt collectors who illegally threatened and harassed consumers. Consumers may be struggling to repay their debt, but they also have a right to be protected against harassment. It is illegal for a debt collector to front as a law firm and intimidate consumers with fake court case numbers. The debt collector may not reveal information about debts to people other than the consumer, nor can he/she debit more money from a consumer’s bank account than the consumer authorized. It is also unlawful for a collector to access a consumer’s credit report without authorization, as a way to coerce them to pay alleged debts. Question: With the holidays right around the corner, I’m thinking of buying some gifts at one of the online auction websites. What should I know? Answer: While many online auction sites offer excellent deals, they are ripe for scams. Even if an auction site is legitimate, a seller on the site could take your money and never deliver the goods. Before making any purchases, visit the sites and familiarize yourself with how they operate. Talk to friends about the experiences they’ve had with different online auction houses. Generally, the person who placed the highest bid for an item will be contacted by the seller to arrange payment and delivery. Most legitimate sellers will accept credit cards or use a thirdparty escrow agent for payment. Be cautious if a seller asks you to pay by check, money order or cash. Two Open Park Board Positions The Lan-Oak Park District will be accepting nominating petitions for the position of Park Commissioner for the consolidated election of April 9, 2013. Nominating petitions and supporting election documents from candidates must be filed with the Park District Board Secretary at the Administration Office, 17551 Chicago Avenue, Lansing, Illinois during the filing period of December 17 through December 24, 2012 during normal business hours of 8:00am to 4:30pm. On the last day of filing, December 24, the Administration Office will be open until 5:00pm. The Park District will have two park board positions expiring. Each position has a term of six years. Potential candidates should call the Cook County Clerk’s Office at 312603-1121 for information regarding the legal requirements for the elected position and the mandatory election forms that are required to be filed with the Park Board Secretary.

Christmas with the Animals

The animals at the Humane Society Calumet Area have made their Christmas wish list and are asking for your help in fulfilling their wishes. The shelter is currently accepting donations, such as toys, treats, blankets, and beds for the cats and dogs, for Christmas with the Animals. Christmas with the Animals will be held on Tuesday, December 17th at 4:30pm at the shelter. Everyone is invited to join as well as have the opportunity to hand toys and treats to some of the animals at the shelter. The HSCA has giving trees at the shelter and at Hearts in Motion Resale Shoppe, located at 1834 45th Street in Munster. The tree tags can be taken off and turned in to the shelter along with the donated item listed on the tag. The items do not need to be wrapped. The shelter is located at 421 45th Street in Munster. You can add a sharper memory to the long list of benefits of a brisk walk. A new study of older adults found that those who walked about 45 minutes three times per week for six months performed substantially better on several cognitive tasks than those who did stretching or strengthening exercises. And the best part? All of the 124 study subjects had been previously sedentary. ‘’The nice result of our study is that a person who has not been physically active during his or her younger years still can benefit from walking,’’ noted lead researcher Dr. Arthur F. Kramer of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Not only did the walkers perform better on tests that gauged their ability to plan, establish schedules and switch between tasks, they showed significant improvement in oxygen consumption as well.

Previous studies have shown a link between lifelong exercise and a lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. Some have theorized that this is because exercise enhances the production of certain hormones in the brain that provide a protective effect. Researchers are unclear as to why exercise improved the brain function of the walkers, but they speculate that the improved oxygenation of tissue afforded by increased cardiorespiratory fitness resulted in greater blood flow to the brain. As part of that mission, the Red Cross also provides about half of the nation’s blood supply through voluntary blood donations. Volunteers are always needed, Red Cross officials say, to work in areas related to disaster relief, health and safety, and providing emergency communications to military members and their families. Volunteers are also needed to coordinate and sponsor blood drives or simply roll up their sleeves and give blood or platelets. Hammer Toes

Hammer toes are actually a curling of the toes. Sometimes these are flexible and can be straightened with manipulation, or fixed which means they are always curled with arthritic changes that don’t allow straightening. Many times corns are found on the tops of these toes. Surgery can be performed to straighten these toes or occasional trimming of the corns can alleviate some of the pain. Helium Shortage The cost for helium is “ballooning”. Despite this gas being one of the most common elements in the universe, there is a global shortage. The shortage is due to production problems, among other things, but not a lack of this element. The Earth is not running out of helium. We in the balloon industry have been told that we should be back on track in 2013. That is to say, helium will be more readily available, unfortunately, we’ve also been told that the skyrocketing prices we have been paying for helium will not be coming down. The True Light

Every year as Christmas approaches, we see a great assortment of lights that are used for decoration and display. Some people set up elaborate illuminated Christmas scenes on their lawns, and use such a vast quantity of lights, that others are inspired to make long journeys just to view these spectacular ostentations. There is only one reason. They are attracted to light. Over 2000 years ago some men came from the East and followed a bright light which led them to the Savior. Their focus was on the star until they found the young child, and then they focused on him. He was the “True Light,” which lights every man that comes into the

world. Jesus said, “I am the light of the world; he that follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” Today, many people have set their gaze on other lights, not just at Christmas time but all year round. They are sometimes dazzled by the light this world has to offer. But the brightness that the world offers is not the “True Light.” It merely serves to distract us and divert our attention from the true light, Jesus Christ. He alone can shine within man and give him life and purpose. Worldly light, no matter how great, can never satisfy men’s hearts and fill them with lasting peace, joy and satisfaction. Only

South Suburban College to host Holiday Basketball and Baseball Camps The South Suburban College Basketball and Baseball Programs will return two Holiday Camps to SSC’s Main Campus in South Holland just before the New Year. First, Head Baseball Coach Steve Ruzich will be directing a two-day Catching Camp on Thursday, December 27th and Friday, December 28th from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Coach Ruzich has directed youth camps for the past 27 years and has taught baseball skills at many other baseball camps throughout the state. This clinic will provide catching instruction in the areas of blocking, calling a game, pick offs, pop throwing times, stance and footwork, drills for practice, pop ups, handling pitchers, and conditioning. In addition to Ruzich’s instruction, Bulldog baseball players will be on hand to help and develop skills. The players’ enthusiasm and expertise always adds to the camp’s success. The Catching Camp is open to Ages 8-18. All players should bring their glove and gear. All participants should wear baseball or sweat pants and gym shoes, and boys must wear cups. The cost of the Catching Camp is $100, and checks should be made payable to SSC Bulldog Baseball. Men’s Basketball Team will host their 7th annual Holiday Basketball Camp for boys and girls ages 7 to 17. Campers will learn from the highly experienced staff of the SSC Men’s

Basketball Team and current Bulldog players. The two-day camp will take place on Sunday, December 30th and Monday, December 31st from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. in the SSC Fitness Center. The cost of the camp is $60 per camper. Pizza, snacks, and refreshments will be on sale for lunch. REVIEW: When the nefarious Boogeyman returns after centuries in hiding, the Guardians - Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, the Sandman, and new member Jack Frost must team up to stop his reign of terror. Rise of the Guardians gets it right. It is a bold, wildly inventive, and extremely heartfelt love letter to the fantasy of childhood, made with passion, enthusiasm, and relentless creative energy. There is a strong, tangible soul behind each bold image of magic and darkness, or at the core of every vivid character, and I found myself quickly swept up in the spirit of the production. Guillermo del Toro served as creative consultant and executive producer on this project, and one can definitely sense his stylistic playfulness and eye for subverting iconography in the DNA of the film. Combine that with author William Joyce’s

distinctive source material, and it seems that Ramsey and his artists had plenty of encouragement to be bold with their imaginations. The film reinvents each of its central characters in the most clever and detailed ways imaginable, crafting whole sub-worlds for Santa, the Tooth Fairy, and the Easter Bunny that could easily stand on their own as the basis for individual films. The last decade has seen a lot of ‘reimaginings’ of Santa’s workshop, in films like The Santa Clause, The Polar Express, and Elf, but I am far more fascinated by how Rise of the Guardians handles the North Pole, and that is only one fraction of the film’s larger tapestry. The dramatic value the film gets out of a concept as silly as the tooth fairy, for instance, is absolutely remarkable. Rise of the Guardians is not quite the best animated feature of the year – that title still belongs to Wreck-It Ralph – but I commend DreamWorks for stepping outside their comfort zone, delivering top-notch children’s entertainment made with artistic clarity and genuine vision. This is the sort of film I can easily see kids falling in love with, and one that opens more discussion paths for parents than ‘wasn’t the zebra funny? This film largely nails a serious, high-fantasy tone, offers remarkably involving interpretations of the main characters, and is brought to life with gorgeous visuals and top-notch voice acting. Part 2 Can government effectively serve if it never steps down from its pedestal and walk among its people? Romney’s campaign proved him to be so far removed from the public that he doesn’t have a clue of how the average American lives. Recalling the relentless arguments of Evangelicals against the President’s belief that government can’t dictate individuals’ (immoral) choice to live outside of God’s design for them, I thought about Jesus’ statement to the scribes and Pharisees in Matt. 23:23. It is right to speak out against abortion and same sex marriages. These acts destroy the individuals who do those things. But what about the injustice and abuse of our tax laws that devastates the financial welfare and security of nonwealthy Americans; shouldn’t Evangelicals speak out against this also? God financed the entire nation of (ancient) Israel off 23.3% tax (2 & 1/3 tithes per year) from every citizen; rich, middle class and low wage earner. From this tax both spiritual and social needs of the country was met that also included provisions for the destitute, orphans and widows. Our lawmakers have created laws that shield the wealthiest citizens from paying their fair share of taxes by differentiating how and on what monies are taxed. This inequity of our tax law has become a

burden to the middle class by making them responsibility for the bulk of government expenses. Another question we should be asking is why GOP House Speaker John Boehner is so adamant that the wealthy remain exempt from paying an equal share of taxes? What would make Boehner willing to risk another recession by blocking tax increases on the rich? Certainly it’s not because they create jobs to keep the US economy afloat. One week before the election, Bain Capital closed its Sensata Technologies plant in Freeport, IL putting 170 employees out of work. The company is being moved to China because it will bring an increase in profits. Bain Capital is not the first company to put Americans out of work for the sake of increasing their profits and it won’t be the last. Greed doesn’t recognize or care about people, it sees only dollar signs. Since scripture instructs us to pray for our government officials, I urge all Christians to begin praying for our lawmakers, especially for Boehner and President Obama, to bring financial justice to all Americans. I have also had some sellers in the past call and say “no more showings until after the holidays”. The holidays could be the best time of the year to have your home on the market! People who look for homes this time of the year are SERIOUS BUYERS and not just out there to wear down your carpets. Who else would take their time to come look at a home in this hectic time of year, A SERIOUS BUYER OF COURSE. And… what better time to let them see your home beautifully decorated for the holidays. Treasured Letters From The Past MARJORIE alice DEVRIES Last Friday on December 7, we observed Pearl Harbor Day, in remembrance of the military strike by Japan on Pearl Harbor. 2,400 Americans were killed and 1,200 injured on that day. Flags were flown at halfstaff around the country, and a tweet from the U.S. Navy read “71 years ago at 0755 HST was the first attack on Pearl Harbor. Taking a moment of silence to remember those lost.” Here’s a letter from Sgt. Robert Buetow, of the 703rd Tank Destroyer Battalion during WWII, addressed to his wife on December 10, 1944: My Own Sweet Darling, Today I received your air-mail letter from the twenty-sixth, and also the one Helen wrote me. You mentioned a few things about your sore knee, but that’s the first I heard of it. Anyhow, I’m really sorry to hear about it honey. I hope it’s all healed up by now. Too bad I’m not there to carry you up and down the steps. Don’t tell me I couldn’t carry you because I’ve done it before. Remember? We had some snow during the night, and it stayed most of the day today, although by now it’s probably slushy. It’s been

pretty cold too, but all in all it hasn’t been so bad. If the ground would freeze and get rid of this mud I’d like it a lot better. You said in your letter that you were going to send me some toothpaste in one of the boxes you were getting ready to mail to me. You did send me some already, darling, but another tube will help keep me supplied for quite a while. Golly, I hope you don’t intend to make a habit of cleaning the pantry at night? I’d hate to get home and be all ready to go to bed for some sleep (?) and then have you decide to start cleaning the pantry! Oh well, I’m sure that would never happen and even if it did I bet I’d know exactly what to do to make you change your mind. Don’t you think I would, mommy dearest? While this is by far the cheapest way to repair your credit, it will require you to do some work and it is not something for the lazy. Part 2: Reading your credit profile and what you WANT it to say… Now that you have your credit report you need to make a list of any and all deragatory things on your credit. Write down all the collections and or judgements and put down which reports they are on. Once you have a list you will know what you have to work with. Also you want to make note of any positive credit you have. To get a strong credit score and appear good to a mortgage company here is what you need. You need to have at least 3 credit lines open (which can be car loans, mortgages, or credit cards) and these 3 lines need to be current and they need to be half way below the limit if they are credit cards. means if you have a credit card on your credit you need to keep your balance below half of the limit and still pay on it every month. Now as far as the negative items on your credit. The first thing you want to look at is how old they are. Here in Illinois, anything over 7 years old can easily be taken off your credit. Except IRS and government liens, the thing is that unless you ask the credit bureau to take it off your credit they won’t do it. You see the credit bureau is very good about reporting things to your credit from creditors but they don’t do anything to try and improve your credit. That is your responsibility. So if you have collections or chargeoff that were charged off 7 or more years ago then look at the bottom of each credit report there should be a phone number. Call that particular bureau and tell them to take that item off your credit. They will usually do this immediately. South Suburban College’s student literary art publication, The Scriblerian, was recognized in two national scholastic publishing competitions. First, The Scriblerian received a “First Place with Special Merit” award from the American Scholastic Press Association (ASPA) scoring 970 out of a possible 1000 points. Additionally, The Scriblerian was recognized with a “Second Class” rating by the Associated Collegiate Press (ACP) scoring 350 out of 500 points. The ASPA called the magazine “an excellent publication which deserves a First Place with Special Merit award” and stated The Scriblerian “shows the superior efforts of talented and creative editors, writers, artists, photographers, layout/graphic designers, staff members and advisor.” The magazine was judged in categories of content, organization, design, presentation, and creativity. Rick Jones is an SSC English instructor who has served as the faculty advisor to the student group responsible for The Scriblerian–The New Scriblerus Society–for the past 21 years. Jones said,

“I am very pleased with this award. Our students produced outstanding work, and they love having their written stories, essays, poems, and art published. Students feel so proud with this accomplishment.” The ACP praised the fiction in this year’s edition by stating that it was “lengthy, which is unusual in a lit mag. Well written and it reads easily.” Jones and Paul Braun, both responsible for the final editing, were pleased with the scoring for writing and editing, and the judge’s comment–“rules of grammar/ mechanics are followed. Excellent editing.” Student Orrin Chaplin’s oil painting “Self-Portrait” was also deemed as “gorgeous” and “an amazing piece” of art. Judging was based on concept, content, writing and editing, art, and layout/design. Overall, the critique stated that “the writing was very impressive” and “it is obvious that a lot of hard work and dedication went into the production of this magazine, and that is evident to your readers.” Jones added, “We have not had the

We have the most efficient post office “in the world”. They deliver “anywhere”. And the price is still a “bargain”. But during all the presidential campaigning, not a word was mentioned about them going bankrupt. We bailed out the auto industry and the banks, but not our post office. What a shame. And don’t complain about the price of stamps, because if they go private, then you’ll really have something to complain about.
