Safety Tips for Holiday Decorating The Red Cross offers seven fire safety tips to remember as you light holiday candles, string up lights, and gather with family and friends. 1. Keep children, pets and decorations away from lit candles. 2. Check food regularly while cooking and remain in the home while cooking. Use a timer as a reminder the stove or oven is on. 3. Choose decorations and artificial trees that are flame resistant or flame retardant. Place the tree away from heat sources and exits. 4. Never leave portable heaters or fireplaces unattended. Install smoke alarms. 5. I f h a n g i n g s t o c k i n g s on t h e fireplace, do not use the fireplace for
fires. 6. Keep items that can catch on fire at least three feet from anything that gets hot, such as sources of heat or stoves. 7. Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Connect no more than three strands of mini light sets and the total number of bulbs to 50. Learn how to keep your family safe through the Red Cross Home Fire Campaign. This holiday season, you can also help the Red Cross reduce home fire related deaths and injuries in at-risk communities by working with volunteers, local fire departments and community partners to install smoke alarms and provide fire safety education and training.

An Angry Woman From Dyer
WOODROW WILCOX On December 1, 2015, I received a phone call from a very angry woman from Dyer, Indiana. She was calling about a medical bill for her husband. She was so angry that she would not consider w h a t I t o l d h e r. S h e wanted me to check on a medica l bill problem w it hout send i ng me a copy of the medical bill with which she believed that she had a problem. I told her that was simply unreasonable. We talked for a while and then she said, “Well, if you’re not going to help me, then we will cancel t he pol ic y ! ” T hen, she hung up on me. Follow ing is most of the letter that I sent to her and her husband. ### In order to investigate a medical billing matter, I need facts to check. The medical bill is the best source of the basic facts. I have done this work for a l most 13 yea r s. I have a great track record of resolving medical bill problems. My help to the clients of this insurance agenc y is FR EE OF CHARGE. Give me a chance to
help you by sending me a copy of the medical bill t hat you bel ieve has a problem. A lso, insurance companies generally will NOT make checks until the end of the month. So, if a claim is not received by the 15th or 20th of one mont h, t he check w i l l not be made and the bill will not be paid until the last few days of the NEXT mont h. Demanding p a y m e nt s or a n s w e r s before a l low ing t he process to occur is simply unreasonable. ### Despite being “kicked in the ear” by the angry woman, I still was willing to help. But, in order to help, I need the facts. Isn’t that reasonable? Note : Woodrow Wi lcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care I n su r a nc e S er v ic e s i n Merrillville, Indiana. He has helped clients of that insurance agency to save over one million dollars by fighting medical bill m ista kes a nd f raud i n the Medicare system. He wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$.

Hammer Toes
Hammer toes are actually a curling of the toes. Sometimes these are flexible and can be straightened with manipulation, or fixed which means they are always curled with arthritic changes that don’t allow straightening. Many times corns are found on the tops of these toes. Surgery can be performed to straighten these toes or occasional trimming of the corns can alleviate some of the pain. If you have any questions concerning hammer toes or any other problems, please stop by or call my office during office hours.

It was then that Toussaint began his journey toward f reedom. Toussa int did not want to respond to the violence of the French men in Haiti with violence unless it was absolutely necessary. One evening Shorty was caught in the middle of a shootout and was saved by a Route 9 gang leader named Dread Wilme who was said to be bullet proof due to a special stone. Before he died, Dread gave Shorty the special stone which was supposed to protect him from death. Shorty got swept up in the gang life at a very early age and soon he was riding around with Biggie, a big name in the Route 9 gang. Shorty had no qua l ms k i l l i ng members of t he Boston crew as he believed that they had his missing sister. It was a shoot out one night that landed Shorty in the hospital which is where his story begins, in the darkness of the rubble of a hospital damaged by an earthquake.

when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. When the prescribed treatment failed, increasing the risk of survival, my only alternative was surgery. What if they make a mistake? What if I die on the operation table? How come God won’t just make the cancer disappear? Why does He choose to heal me through the scalpel of a surgeon? As the scheduled date for the surgery neared I became increasingly distressed and worried until the Lord spoke to me from 1 John 4:17. Next week part 4 This summer I’ll be leading a Women’s Bible Study “Water Walking with Jesus” in my home on Tuesday evenings from 7:00pm – 8:30pm beginning June 26 – July 31. If you’d like to attend send me an email (or letter) for the address. We will be exploring Jesus’ call to Peter to “Come,” and walk on the water with Him and how this passage of scripture impacts our walk with the Lord. There is no charge to attend. For questions and/or comments, send an email to acaison@sbcglobal.net . Or you can write me at: Anna Caison, c/o New Community Church, 14801 Lincoln Ave., Dolton, IL 60419.

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: We are considering taking our home off the market through the holidays. Any suggestions?
Fall back-to-school activities. • At Christmastime, our culture focuses on family and home. Preparing for the indoor activ ities of w inter is one of the most enjoyable periods of family life. W hen is your home ever more beautiful and inviting? You have cleaned and decorated, and your home looks like a picture postcard. If the results are good enough for family and friends, they will surely be good enough to impress your buyers. Get the family team on board to do a five-minute blitz pickup every morning to keep holiday messes to a minimum. • W i t h r e d u c e d i n v e n t o r i e s a n d motivated buyers, you will have all the members of the Multiple Listing Service on your team. If you do get a contract, you can arrange the terms to suit your needs. If moving during the holidays isn’t an option, you can put in the closing date of your choice. Most people can close 30 to 60 days after a contract is written, so there is plenty of time. Allowing buyers to view your home during this happy season lets them better picture their ow n family life in t he attractive environment you have created.
Answer: When you look at your holiday ca lenda rs you may f ind t he mont hs a l r e a d y ov er lo a de d w it h s e a s on a l obligations -- shopping, entertaining and more. It is understandable why you would be tempted to take your home off the market during the holidays. Better to just pack it in and start fresh in January, right? NO! We feel taking your home off the market during the Christmas season is a mistake. The house sure isn’t going to sell off the market! So what is the advantage of that? So you’re busy. Have your Realtor put on a lockbox. You can leave in the morning, go to work, go shopping, and let the Realtors take care of things for you. Many people take off work sometime during the season. The husband and wife are both off and want to see houses. We like the holidays because the buyers have more time, and they can look at homes together. Before you take your home off the market, consider the following points: • Although buyer activity may appear to slow down, the buyers who are actively looking during the holidays are more serious. The home market is no more affected at Christmas than during other “busy” period. If that were so, the market would shut down throughout the year as families concentrate on spring weddings, June graduations, summer vacations, and For sale: BMW Rims with tires staggered. 20’s came off 2006-750-Li. Pondering My Blessings
MIKE BUDER In my first year or two in the business (early 80’s) a young couple wanting to buy t heir f irst home wa l ked i nto ou r of f ice look ing for an agent to help them. That was my f loor time day, so I was happy to talk with them. They looked and seemed young – and they were – not even twenty yet. They were ex pect i ng t hei r first baby and were such a nice young couple. The young man was such an earnest guy wanting to find a home for his wife and soon to be 1st child. We talked for sometime and it was clear to me they couldn’t afford much. Our normal sale at that time was between $40,000 and $60,000 and I knew they were not going to be able to afford anything in our local market. They loved the area but it just wasn’t possible by a long shot. But I didn’t want to burst their bubble at that point because maybe they had some fol k s t hat cou ld help them out. I set the young couple up with a lender to get qualified and suggested that they call me once they knew what their budget was going to be. Several days later the earnest young man called me back and was proud as he could be to say they could afford to buy a home around $15,000. I had no idea where to find a home in that price range in our area since it just didn’t exist in our market. The young man said he drove by a home in a mobile home pa rk some mi les away a nd saw a home priced at $14,000, could they see it today? I was a bit taken back as I’d never sold a mobile home before and wasn’t sure at all what that was all about. I took a moment to ta l k w it h my broker (my Dad at the time) and he assured me we could handle a mobile home sale. So off I went to look at this tiny home
with the couple! They fell in love with it and saw it as their 1st castle! I remember thinking-How cool is this! We wrote up a contract on the spot and proceeded to move for ward. But… a ll heck broke loose as it wasn’t so easy to find f ina ncing for a mobi le home of this size and age. Somehow we made it all come together. This young couple was so g ratef u l to have someone c a re enough to see it through with them. Over the years, t his couple has bought and sold many homes and referred other clients to me. On the day we closed, I became so aware that it didn’t matter so much as the price of the home but rather helping a truly sincere couple find their “dream home”. It was a big gift to both of us. To this day I’ve never run across quite a not her scena r io like this one but I’ve never forgotten it. As our local market took a dive from 2007 til 2013, I’ve been able to help many folks t h roug h some pret t y tough times and I’m glad t hat I cou ld rega rd less of whether or not the big checks followed at close. I knew I had the skill and experience to help folks in need and honestly I have been personally blessed and am thankful for each and every deal. Annual Thanksgiving Dinner Unites The Community
The undefeated Thornwood High School Wrestling Team, their coaches and District 205 school officials took time out from their volunteer duties to pose for a picture with Township Supervisor Frank Zuccarelli.
Residents from throughout Thornton Township and the surrounding area gathered in the spirit of fellowship at Thornton Township’s Annual Holiday Dinner. The event originally began as a Thanksgiving dinner for the homeless in 2000 and through the years became an event that unites all segments of the south suburban community. The annual event is co-sponsored by Thornton Township and South Suburban College. Those in attendance enjoyed a traditional turkey dinner prepared by Jimboo’s Catering and served by volunteers from the township, SSC, area churches, community organizations, local businesspeople and elected officials. Du r i ng h is welcome Tow nsh ip Super v isor Fra n k Zuccarelli called on the community to support a petition drive sponsored by the township to nominate Emanuel AME Church in Charleston for the Nobel Peace Prize. Last June nine members of the church were killed in a racial hate crime, but instead of violence the public response was Christian forgiveness, unity and peace. Emanuel AME Church is credited with keeping the peace during a time of turmoil. “Please honor the victims and their families by logging onto www.nobelpeaceprizeforcharleston.com and signing the petition,” he said. “This is not only important for our community, but for our country.” When someone says something insulting instead of lashing out in anger we have to learn to walk away and pray for them,” he said. “Be kind and love each other. Be the leaders to bring about positive change.” Those in attendance praised Supervisor Zuccarelli for his commitment to help those in need and his efforts to unite the community by promoting understanding through events that bring people of different backgrounds together in the spirit of fellowship.
“We love and appreciate all of the events offered by the township, said South Holland resident Tony Van Drunen who attended with his wife Betty. Emma Powell was thrilled that Supervisor Zuccarelli took time to visit with and acknowledge her grandmother Annie Davis’ 106th birthday. He has always been so kind to us,” she said. “My grandmother is still active and looks forward to attending the township events. We are very grateful for everything the township does for the community.”

Christmas Memories (from our readers) ANNA M. CAISON Last year I asked readers to share their memories of Christmas. I’d like to re-share their stories as we begin the Holiday Season. If there are others who would like to share their memories of Christmas with our readers, you may submit them to the address listed below. Isaiah 9:6 For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government shall be upon His shoulder. His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, and the Prince of Peace. I learned from a child what Christmas really means and why we are happy to exchange gifts. John 3:16 plainly tells us God loved us so much that He gave us the best gift anyone could receive, eternal life. It is not a physical gift, but a spiritual one that could never be destroyed or replaced. For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in Him, shall not perish, but have everlasting life. Christmas means to me “the JOY of the Lord” which is my strength, the PEACE of God which passeth all understanding. Let us all remember we can do without the “mas” but we cannot do without Christ. He is our hope of glory. – Ruth Stewart (2) Growing up, I loved our family tradition of sitting around the Christmas t ree. We chose one nig ht somet ime before Christmas to curl up on the couch

or recliners and gaze at our beautiful, bright tree. With all other lights except for ca nd les ex t ing uished, we rested our eyes on the illuminated treasury of carefully placed ornaments—old friends rediscovered every year. “Our best tree yet!” someone would often remark. As a choir caroled from the record player, my heart seemed to grow quiet, open, expectant. Something captivated me about those little lights with their pointed brilliance caught in the dark evergreen boughs. Pine needle shadows in pink, blue, and yellow swatches of light etched the low ceiling of our trailer with a texture like the rush of angel wings. Stillness and wonder danced in sparks of tinsel. Together we watched and listened. For a few stolen moments, our night became silent and holy. I like to think now that the wonder I felt as a child watching the Christmas tree truly fills Christmas and brims over the top. Just think---God With Us---a newborn baby, wrinkled, red, and new! HO S T W I T H T H E MO S T M I K E C AV O T O AT B I N Y O N S I N HAMMOND: The annual Christmas Party hosted by American Portfolio’s Mike Cavoto was a splendid success again this year. With the rebound of the housing market, it was smiles a ll a round as Brokers/Agents a nd Appra i ser s posed for t h i s photo fol low i ng t he s u mpt uou s me a l . P ict u red here su r rou nd i ng M i ke C, center seated are: Mort D, Fred S, Suzette K, Tracy G, Mike K, Cathy H, Lisa D, Roberta T, Mike Z, Jim B, Janice MK, Kay S and Maria E. Mike has been hosting this annual event for the past 10 years at least and we are all so grateful he does. A great lender who tells it like it is, saves both buyers and sellers lots of time and energy by determining early on the exact status of one’s ability to purchase. Blessings to Mike Cavoto and to all a fabulous 2016! ***

Pictured are Holly Novacich (Studio by Holly Schererville,) and Char Coglianese (Studio by Char, Merrillville) on stage as they show the audience how modern makeovers are done. The models, ranging in age from girls just out of their teens to mature women, had before and after photos taken of their hair and makeup and each was transformed on stage. Persons attending had the opportunity to do some Christmas shopping and enjoy a delicious meal prepared by t he gent lemen f rom Restor at ion House Ministries out of Ga r y, In. T he men a l so gave test i mon ia l s during the course of the evening of how they turned their lives around with the help of Restoration House Ministries (not to be confused with Restoration Ministries out of Harvey, Il which is a different organization). The audience was a lso a lerted by Holly, as to how hairdressers are the first line of defense in domestic abuse situations and as such are on the alert for signs of such abuse. This topic has been in the news as of late and hairdressers in most states are now trained to spot and report any abuses. All proceeds from the benefit went to the two charities. S A N TA A N D H E L PE R S AT T H E SCHERERVILLE WALMART: It was a lonely day at WalMart last week when Santa was alone on his Christmas throne waiting for youngsters to come and join him. So N2N asked some of the store ‘elves’ to pose for our photo while we waited for youngsters to arrive. Many department stores have some version of Santa Claus on hand to provide little ones with cheer and a small gift and many non-profits are hosting Pancake Breakfasts with Santa too. A festive time for sure but please remember the ‘reason for the season!’ More on that.......next *** CHRISTMAS IS A JOYUS TIME FOR US TO REMEMBER THE CHRIST CHILD IN THE MANGER: How often we get distracted by the hustle and bustle of our daily lives and forget why we are doing all this--a stor y that began 2000 years ago around the world in a town called Bethlehem. That journey by Mar y and Joseph a nd e v ent u a l l y B a b y Je s u s w a s the start of our Christian religion, something many of us cling to today, especially today in this day and age of uncertainty. I can’t believe that just talking or writing about the Christ Child in the manger has become a subject of scrutiny. I love the slogan or say ing t hat is embroidered on pi l lows a nd in pictures t hat says --”As for Me and My Family--We Will Serve the Lord.” Who ever our Lord is, in whatever language we pray to him, let’s hope that this Christmas season will find peace and forgiveness and the ability to co-exist in a very different world from that of even just a few years ago. Any thoughts? Please write to me via my email and I will share with N 2 N readers.
