In t hose days Caesa r Augustus issued a decree t h at a c en s u s s hou ld be ta ken of t he ent ire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place w h i le Qu i r i n iu s was governor of Syria.) A nd ever yone went to t hei r ow n tow n to register. So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house a nd l i ne of Dav id. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, t he t ime ca me for t he baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him i n a ma nger, bec au se there was no guest room available for them. A n d t h e r e w e r e shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their f locks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause g reat joy for a l l the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the

Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” S u d d e n l y a g r e a t company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” W hen t he angels had left them and gone into heaven, t he shepherds s a i d t o on e a n ot h e r, “Let’s go to Bet hlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen h im, t hey spread t h e w or d c on c e r n i n g what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what t he shepherds said to them. But Mar y t reasu red up a l l t hese t h i n g s a nd p onde r e d them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorif y ing and praising God for a l l t he t h i ngs they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told. Year-end Tax-smart Investing Ideas BOB KRYGSHELD It may be worth your t i me to ex plore a few year-end investment and financial moves that can potentially pay off for you when you file your taxes in April. Here a re a few such moves to consider: • B o o s t y o u r 4 01 ( k ) c ont r ibut ion s. Un le s s you have a “Roth” 401(k), your contributions a re made w it h pret a x dol la rs – so t he more you put i n, t he lower y ou r t a x a ble i nc ome. A s k y ou r employ er i f you ca n increase you r 4 01( k ) c o n t r i b u t i o n s for the remainder of the year. (For 2016, you can contribute up to $18,000 to your 401(k), or $24,000 if you’re 50 or older.) Also, if you receive a bonus before the year ends, you may be able to put that toward your 401(k) too, thus deferring the taxes you’d have to pay on this extra income. • Add to your IR A. You actually have until April 18, 2017, to cont r ibute to your IRA for the 2016 ta x yea r, but t he more you can put in now, the less you’ll have to come up w it h at t he f i l i ng deadline. Contributions to a traditional IR A are genera l ly deduct ible, but the deductibility is phased out if your income rises above certain levels. For 2016, you can put up to $5,500 in your IRA, or $6,500 if you’re 50 or older. (Roth IR A contributions are never deductible.) • Contribute to a 529 plan. When you contribute to a 529 plan, any earnings g row t h i s d i st r ibute d ta x-f ree, prov ided it is used for qualified higher educat ion ex penses. ( Ho w e v e r, 52 9 p l a n distributions not used for these qualified expenses may be subject to federal and state taxes and a 10% Battery Back-up Pumps give you peace of mind. We have the best one, the finest we can find. Witvoet Plumbing. 708-331-7335

penalty on the earnings.) Fur t hermore, your 529 plan contributions may be deductible from your state taxes. • B e g e n e r o u s . I t ’s certainly the season for g iv i ng, a nd when you ma ke cha r itable g i f t s, you can bot h give and receive. By sending cash to a qualified charity, you can get a tax deduction, but if you look beyond y ou r c h e c k b o ok , y ou might gain even bigger benefits. Specifically, if you donate appreciated securities you’ve held for more t han one year to charity, you can deduct the value of the securities, ba se d on t hei r wor t h when you make the gift. Plus, neither you nor the charity will have to pay capital gains taxes on the donated investments. • C o n s i d e r “ta xh a r v e s t i n g ” opp or t u n it ie s . Tr y to ident if y t he ga ins a nd losses you have realized this year, as well as any gains you estimate may st i l l be pa id on some of y ou r i n v e s t m e nt s . By work i ng w it h you r f i na nc ia l adv i sor a nd t a x pr ofe s s ion a l, y ou may be able to f i nd some “ta x-ha r vest i ng” opportunities, in relation to these gains and losses, which could benefit you. So, there you have them: some “ta x-smart” ideas you may want to put to use. And since some of t hem need to be done before the year ends if you want to see the benefit on your 2016 tax return, consider ta k ing act ion now. Happy Holidays! What an extraordinary 2016 year! Depending on one’s perspective, there have been times of euphoria and of disappointment. The Chicago Cubs winning a World Series Championship and an unprecedented United States Presidential campaign and election have brought us to places in our life we have never before experienced. Through it all, it’s important to know that we can all fall back on that we know to be secure in life.

We can all find security and joy this time of year; the joy of our upcoming Winter Wonderland, the joy of homecomings and family dinners, the joy of giving back, and the joy of service to others in need. May it be our prayer to give thanks continually for the certainty of God’s graciousness that we’ve experienced here in South Holland. As we celebrate God’s gift of the Christ Child, may we continue to humbly serve and to rejoice in the security and unity we share as a faith and family community. As a Village Board, we and our entire administration express our sincere desire for each of you to experience the peace of security and joy during this blessed Christmas season and throughout the upcoming 2017 New Year!

Is a High School Diploma Necessary? Arlo Kallemeyn Is a high school diploma really necessary? High school students ask themselves this question at least once during their high school years. Most students answer this question with a resounding ‘Yes’, however, for some students the lure of freedom from schoolwork is just too enticing - they just stop attending high school. At first, life outside of school for these former students can be fun and interesting. After all, life has so much to offer, right? These students can stay out at late-night parties and sleep late the next day. These students can spend their time having fun without worrying about a tough math exam the next day. However, some of the former students soon come to a sobering realization. They realize that going through life without a high school diploma virtually guarantees them a future of low-paying jobs and subsistence living. They realize that chasing pleasure today will result in painful experiences later in life. These are the former students that District 205 is committed to helping. Other school districts may assume their job is finished once students have left the traditional 4 years of high school. District 205 believes that the job is not finished until these students are given another chance to earn their high school diploma. This belief is why District 205 has created District 205 Board of Education members encourage Outlook Academy students in their studies. the Outlook Academy. Thornton Township High School District 205 and Chicago State University have formed a unique partnership to provide students with a pathway to earn their high school diploma that extra boost to get back on track with their peers. This exciting partnership will provide students in need of additional credits with one-stop access to both high school classes, as well as higher education and workforce development programs. This program began over 10 years ago at District 205. It was previously known as ‘Extended Summer School’ and the ‘13th Graders Program’. This program is supported by State of Illinois funding as well as federal funding to provide education to young adults between the ages of 17 and 22. Board President Bernadette Lawrence commented, “The Outlook Academy is going to make a wonderful difference in the lives of so many young adults. These students now realize that a District 205 High School Diploma can change their lives, and they are so excited to come to class and be on a path to graduation. We have worked with many stakeholders to make this a reality. I’m so happy that the Outlook Academy will now help these students to realize their dreams.” The #1 goal of the District 205 Outlook Academy is to help students obtain their District 205 High School Diploma. These students need several credits and classes to earn their high school diploma. Students will attend classes located on the Chicago State University Campus taught by District 205 teachers until they have fulfilled all credit requirements for their high school diploma. Besides attending classes taught by District 205 teachers, students will have access to CSU and District 205 tutors. Students will also be provided with academic and career counseling support. Outlook Academy Director Brett Fickes commented, “I’m very proud of the Outlook Academy. It provides real help and hope to hundreds of young people who desire to change their lives for the better. We are putting them on a trajectory that can help make a real difference in their lives. In October the first class will finish their high school requirements. This reminds us of our mission and high calling – to provide a stellar high school education to each student in our care, and to create life-long learners.” The Outlook Academy currently has 190 students registered, taking classes in math, science, social studies, and more. Due to the popularity of this program, there are nearly 200 students on a waiting list who are ready to fill the classrooms and earn their high school diploma. More information is available on the District 205 website under Areas of Instruction. “I would like to thank those teachers who supported the development of this life-changing program. Your dedication to our community is greatly appreciated,” said Director Brett Fickes. If you or your student is interested in joining the Outlook Academy or you have any questions, please contact: Patricia A. Malopsy-Fortier, Outlook Academy Coordinator at (312) 752-0367.

Christmas Giving MIKE BUDER I a s k , w h a t i s y ou r def i n it ion of g iv i ng du r i ng t h is Ch r ist ma s s e a s on ? C h r i s t m a s i s celebrating the life and birth of Jesus Christ who gave his life for us – for ou r si ns…hu nd reds of years later we celebrate this with an abundance of gifts in a material form that society tells us we have to – to sustain the p r o s p e r ou s e c on om y. To c omp e t e w it h t he Jones’, to have the next best thing for the year, to show your love through a price tag, style, or brand. Is t h is t r u ly g iv i ng or multiplying what you’ve been doing throughout t he yea r for t he loved ones su r rou nd i ng you (wife, kids, sister, mom, etc.)? Are they in “need” of 8 gifts under the tree totaling $800.00, racking up your credit card debt and most likely ending up in the back of the closet or donated 6 months later. Please – remember what Christmas is a ll about. Christmas is not about going into debt financially a nd emot iona l ly. It i s about helping the elderly neighbor shovel her walk, giving that extra change or dollar in t he bucket for the frozen volunteer ringing the bell outside of the store your walking out of. Christmas is giving your time to donate to

the local shelter whether it’s blankets, money or service. How about giving blood to t he A merica n Re d C ros s (t he y h ave great cookies). Since the time of Christ’s birth, the spirit of giving gifts has been present in the mind of each Christian as he or she commemorates the Christmas season. Our Heavenly Father gave us his son, Jesus Christ. This precious son gave us his life, the atonement and v ictor y over t he g rave. What will you and I give for Christmas this year? Let us in our lives give to our Lord and Sav ior the gift of gratitude by living his teachings and following in his footsteps. It was said of him that he “went around doing good” (Acts 10:38). As we do likewise, the Christmas spirit will be ours. Merry Christmas to you and your family. Hammer Toes

Hammer toes are actually a curling of the toes. Sometimes these are flexible and can be straightened with manipulation, or fixed which means they are always curled with arthritic changes that don’t allow straightening. Many times corns are found on the tops of these toes. Surgery can be performed to straighten these toes or occasional trimming of the corns can alleviate some of the pain. If you have any questions concerning hammer toes or any other problems, please stop by or call my office during office hours.

Township Holiday Dinner Unites The Community

Over 2,000 people were served the annual Thornton Township Holiday Dinner. Photo provided by Ernst Lamothe Jr.

The spirit of unit y was apparent as residents from t h roug hout Thor nton Tow nsh ip, t he sout h suburbs, northwest Indiana and Chicago gathered for Thornton Township’s annual Community Holiday Dinner earlier this month. Co-sponsored by Thornton Township and South Suburban College the event began as a Thanksgiving dinner for the homeless in 2000 and is now open to everyone bringing all segments of the community together. Those in attendance enjoyed a complimentary traditional turkey dinner with all the trimmings prepared by Jimboo’s Catering and served by volunteers from the township, SSC, area churches, community organizations, local businesspeople and elected officials. The event is designed to bring together people from all walks of life so they can get to know each other while breaking bread together. Thornton Township Supervisor Frank Zuccarelli believes offering events that bring people together promote understanding, appreciation for our differences and make the community stronger. Those in attendance praised Supervisor Zuccarelli for his ongoing commitment to serve the senior community and people in need. The annual dinner continues to attract new first time attendees. This event was very special for friends Geraldine Wright and Frances Barnes because it was the first time they attended a community event since moving to Riverdale. The two had been residents of a nursing home for several years until a community organization helped reintegrate

them back into the community. The women said they are very grateful that the township is now assisting them. They enjoyed the food, entertainment, dancing to the music of the Past Life Band and making new friends. “This is a wonderful event w ith a great atmosphere and friendly people. I love being around other people,” said Calumet City resident Delores Murrell. “I enjoy the entertainment, and of course the wonderful food. The township has been so good to the community.”

Redeemer Lutheran Church has celebrated Santa Lucia Day since 1968. A queen is crowned, followed by a traditional Swedish smorgasbord. Queen Jenna Sprouse and her court for 2016 include, (left to right) Brianna Stone (2007), Linsey Daluga, Jenna Sprouse (Queen) Shannon Gallagher (2007), Courtney Stone, and Marissa Broadway (2013). Star Boy, Frank Alspaugh. According to the legend, Lucia was born in Sicily. On the night of her marriage, she gave

away her dowry to the poor people of the village and confessed that she had become a Christian. Accused of witchcraft, she died a martyr’s death at the stake on December 13th, 304. She was later canonized as Santa Lucia and is a symbol of light, faith, and Christian charity. “Sankta Lucia” has always been recognized in Sweden as “The Queen of Lights” and on December 13th, or Lucia Day, a celebration has been held to honor the return of the light after the dark winter. Overcoming Your Credit Card Crisis The battle with credit card debt can be a constant struggle against high interest rates and monthly payments that never seem to make a dent in what you owe. How is it possible to make monthly credit card payments and never get anywhere? This problem is caused by high interest rates that eats up most of your payments. Even though you make your minimum payment, you don’t make much headway eliminating the debt. Luckily, there’s a way to find debt relief without incurring more debts. Using certified credit counseling like Consolidated Credit, you can get

professional advice to identify the right solution for your needs. A certified credit counselor can review your options to see which solution is best for you. You can qualify for lower interest rates or even eliminate them, while consolidating your credit card debt into one easy payment to get you out of debt faster. Every financial institution differs, but most people see a reduction of total payments by up to 30-50% as they pay off debt faster. Freedom from debt can become a reality!

Stage Show Brings to Life a Chapter from Motown vs Chi-Town To complement the Chicago Blues Museum exhibition Motown vs. Chi-Town on display at the South Shore Arts gallery in Munster, Theatre at the Center is bringing back the popular performance of The Signal: A Doo Wop Rhapsody. The Signal: A Doo Wop Rhapsody recounts the story of show creator Henry Farag’s experiences growing up amidst this exciting musical chapter in Gary, Indiana’s history. The live jukebox musical presents 21 popular Doo Wop hits intertwined with recreations of radio broadcasts that will transport the audience back to the romantic times of the 1950s and 1960s. This special performance will be presented at Theatre at the Center in Munster on Thursday, December 29 at 7 p.m. The Signal: A Doo Wop Rhapsody features a cappella groups Stormy Weather and The Spaniels, along w ith Grammy-award winner Willie Rogers performing Doo Wop favorites. Many of the performers represented were discovered singing under the streetlamps in Gary, not far from Farag’s childhood home. Street corner groups were part of the fabric of the neighborhood back in those days. Local deejay Vivian Carter was also just getting started in her career in the 1950s. While continuing to work at the local radio station, she opened a record store in Gary. She and her husband James C. Bracken also started a record label called Vee-Jay Records. Vee-Jay released records by The Spaniels, The Eldorados, The Dells, and Blues legend John Lee Hooker. One of their biggest hits was by The Four Seasons, the first

white act featured on the label. Vee-Jay was also the label that originally introduced the Beatles to American audiences with “Please, Please, Me” and “Ask Me Why” released on 45 in 1963 - one year before the Ed Sullivan Show appearance. Carter passed away in 1989 leaving behind a great musical legacy. A ticket to The Signal also includes admission to The Chicago Blues Museum exhibition Motown vs. Chi-Town on display in the South Shore Arts Gallery in Munster. The exhibition explores the rich history of the music scenes of two great cities from the 1950s through the 1970s, with stories told through historic photographs, rare video footage and original artifacts. The exhibition showcases the many Blues and R&B legends that began their careers in Chicago and Detroit, including several from northwest Indiana. Amazing photographs and videos depict dozens of Blues legends such

The Wonder of Christmas

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: Our buyers recently had a home inspection performed on my home. The inspector said the fireplace damper is broken. I haven’t used my fireplace in years. We have had 17 Christmases in our home, so I’m sure the damper was damaged by the fat guy in the red suit coming down our chimney. Why should I be responsible to make that repair? Answer: We assume you mean Santa Claus. I think the jolly old man who brings happiness to millions of children & families ever y year, deser ves a bit more respect from you. Since Santa visits millions of homes every year, there are bound to be a few accidents. We once had a few roof shingles break off from what was probably caused by Santa and his reindeer team. Since Santa’s visits have been ver y special to our family, we consider t his as nor ma l Holiday maintenance and had no problem making the repairs. Kustom Electric. Mr. Seller, the broken damper is a safety issue. Your new buyers have every right to insist that you fix the chimney damper. Failure to do so could terminate the contract on your home. We suggest you fix the safety issue with your home, move towards a successful closing and be happy knowing that your new buyers will be safe in their new Home. Here is somet hing else you should know: Blaming Santa for this broken damper is most definitely going to put you on His “Naughty List.” You may want to reconsider your accusations. as Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters and Dinah Washington. One highlight of the exhibition is an original booth from the Chicago’s legendary Blues spot the Checkerboard Lounge. A special section of the exhibition explores Northwest Indiana’s connection to the music scene. Vee-Jay Records and their artists are highlighted as one of the earliest African American-owned record companies in the country. Vee-Jay went on to become a major R&B label. A spotlight is also shown on the origins of a better-known aspect of Gary’s history, The Jackson 5, who first opened for soul greats James Brown and The Chi-Lites, and whom Gladys Knight brought to Berry Gordy’s attention prior to 1969, when they became hits as Motown artists. The exhibition was created by the Chicago Blues Museum which was founded by Gregg Parker in 1991. Stefanie Mielke is the exhibition curator. Motown vs. Chi-Town will be on display through January 29, 2017. Indiv idual ticket prices for The Signal are $30, and student tickets are $20. Ticket includes admission to the exhibition Motown vs. Chi-Town presented under the same roof at the Center for the Visual and Performing arts in Munster. Handyman Services All Handyman Repairs done on-the-side to save money! Painting, drywall, tile, concrete patching, doors, roofing, hauling. Very reasonable. Mark 708-4087192

While pondering, what God would have me write about Christmas, I was drawn to a passage of scripture that led me to see another aspect of the Christmas Story that is often overlooked during the holiday season. The world has always considered a person to be valuable to society if he is wealthy, intellectual, politically savv y, a nd of course, born of “acceptable” ancestry. The poor, under educated, the disabled and those of “unacceptable” ancestry were considered worthless and expendable. But listen to what the Apostle Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 1:27-29 (AMP Bible): “But God has selected (for His purpose) the foolish things of the world to shame the w ise (revealing their ignorance), and God has selected (for His purpose) the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong (revealing their frailty). God has selected (for His purpose) the insignificant (base) things of the world, and the things that are despised and treated w ith contempt, (even) the things that are nothing, so that He might reduce to nothing the things that are, so that no one may (be able to) boast in the presence of God.” When I looked at Christmas through the lens of the above verses, I became overwhelmed with awe and wonder at Ch r ist’s i nca r nat ion i nto hu ma n it y

because, His stor y included my stor y and others like me who didn’t make the world’s top ten list. When the Lord became man, He didn’t choose a family of wea lt h, priv ilege and prominence. He selected instead, an obscure, insignificant family on the fringes of poverty. Our salvation did not come t hrough government policy or intellectual thought. It came through the birth of a baby, of Jewish descent; a not so favored minority of the Roman Empire. Throughout Christ’s earthly ministry He chose men and women that society de eme d wor t h le s s, we a k , i n fer ior, disabled and poor to proclaim the power of God by making them recipients of H i s m i racles, hea l i ng , accept a nce, forg iveness of sins, a nd power over demon ic oppression. Fol low i ng His resu r rect ion, He com m issioned His fol lowers, of which a major it y were considered socia l outca st s, to lead others to Him through the preaching of the cross which to the Jewish elite was a stumbling block, and to the intellectuals, foolishness. But to those who receive it, it is the wisdom, wonder, and power of God. Merry Christmas!!! For questions and/or comments, send an email to anna.a62@yahoo.com . The Ha mmond Public Libra r y recent ly received a laptop computer and flatbed scanner, as part of the Indiana Genealogical Society’s Indiana Genealogy Digitization Project. The library has agreed to use these resources to digitize local history documents, which will then be included as free databases on the Society’s website. The library will produce five such databases over the next six months, and after completion of the agreement the library will retain the digitization kit to use as they wish. There are tremendous Indiana genealogy and history resources scattered throughout the state. A great many of these were published in small quantities and can be difficult for researchers to locate. These documents come in a wide variety of forms such as booklets, flyers, commencement lists, programs, identified group photos, monographs, theses, etc. and can be found in private homes, churches,

They remind me of the movie “Cocoon” and then the sequel to “Cocoon” that describes a group of seniors who discover mysterious entity’s from a far away planet that gives them their youth back, BUT, they have to travel to that mysterious planet to keep going. The sequel has them coming back to earth with not so spectacular results. That’s what the Pullman Tech Alums remind me of. They are all in their 80’s, 90’s and more and travel to Oak Lawn each fall for a reunion and surprisingly most are still t here! If you have any contact with Pullman Tech, they want to hear from you. Call Carmen (Cal) Adducci at 708-596-9537 or Olga Brazzale at 219-696-0129. They have discovered the fountain of youth!!

For inclusion in Neighbor 2 Neighbor, please call Janice at 708-302-8585 or write to her C/O Coldwell Banker, 20 E. US 30, Schererville, In 46375 or e-mail her at janice. mintonkutz@cbexchange.com
