Calumet Memorial Park District’s Upcoming Classes The Calumet Memorial Park District’s Wado-Ki Karate is a style of the ancient Okinawan martial art that stresses focus, fitness and discipline, making it a great program for both children ages 4 and older as well as adults. Classes are held on Wednesdays from 5:45 until 6:30 PM. The next session will be from January 6 to February 17. The fee is $40 for residents, and $45 for non-residents. Registration is being taken at the Memorial Park Fieldhouse, 612 Wentworth Ave. in Calumet City. For additional information, please call 708-868-2530 x121. Candy Cane Classic

Patti’s All-American of Dyer hosted their Candy Cane Classic Saturday, Dec, 5, at the facility in Dyer. This noncompetitive exhibition was designed where each student worked to achieve their best personal, all-around score. All children were awarded both a participation ribbon plus a first through fifth place ribbon based on their individual scores. A ll scoring was done by Patti’s A llAmerican instructors. Parents, grandparents, and friends were encouraged to take pictures and video to capture all the exciting moments. Patti’s All-American will host their competitive Cupid’s Classic in-house meet in February on Valentine’s Day. All Patti’s gymnasts and tumblers are eligible to take part.

SSC Holiday Basketball Camp The South Suburban College Men’ Basketball Team will host a Holiday Basketball Camp which will begin December 28th. Providing Job Seekers With Careers Sout h Subu rba n Col lege (SSC ) recently added one more graduation to its list of ceremonies this fall with its Hig hway Const r uct ion Ca reers Tr a i n i n g P r o g r a m ( HC C T P) . O n November 20, 2015, SSC presented Certificates of Completion to 16 of 22 students who completed the program this past summer and fall. HCCTP is one more short-term program that the college provides to job seekers who are looking for different options. HCCTP is an intensive 450-hour prog ra m held over t he cou rse of 12 week s, for 40 hou rs per week. Prospective students must meet three simple requirements to be eligible to start the application process: they must have a driver’s license, must have a high school diploma or GED, and must be at least 18 years of age. The application process sta r t s w it h ma ndator y orientation followed by assessment test i ng. If t he st udent passes t he assessment test they are then given an interview and sent for a drug test before getting started. SSC received the grant for HCCTP in the fall of 2013 from the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) to prov ide tuition free training to women, minorities, and disadvantaged individuals seeking employment in the construction trades. Searcy Boyd of Harvey has tested, interviewed, and passed the entrance requirements for Ironworkers Local 1. “It is ver y exciting to see doors opened for our graduates that may have been closed before,” said Rebecca Garcia, HCCTP Manager. “Watching someone come in with the desire to gain a career in the construction trades and then see them do what it takes to make it happen is truly amazing. I cannot wait to see how this program continues to grow and change lives in the future.” Garcia said graduates who complete apprenticeship programs and become journeymen can hope to earn a starting salary of $41,600 to $93,000, depending on the trade. Happy Birthday Jesus! by Janet Robinson “Was Jesus really born on December 25?” Christians commemorate the birth of Jesus on this day. In fact, historians really don’t know the actual date, but what we all know is that Jesus was born. Oftentimes, children a nd adu lts equa l ly become d ist racted with the celebratory customs of Christmas including Christmas decorations, gift giving and receiving, special dinners, Christmas carols and Santa Claus. But how often do we take the time to reflect on the birth of our Savior and King. Are we celebrating His birthday without Him? A birt hday pa rt y is to honor t he person’s birth because they are special and loved. Jesus’ birthday, Christmas, is no different. It’s like having a birthday party for a friend or family member, all the guests are invited and awaiting the honoree’s arrival, the decorations are hung meticulously and the house is prepared, the feast of food is fit for a king, and the gifts are beautifully w r appe d w a it i ng to be r ippe d open. Everything is in place and ready…except, the guest of honor was never invited. That sounds foolish, doesn’t it? Isn’t this exactly what happens when we don’t acknowledge Jesus in some way on Christmas day? You might ask, “What are some practical ways to honor Him?” Some suggest ions a re, ha ng ‘Happy

Birthday Jesus’ banners throughout the home. These can be purchased or made on the computer. Before dinner, have a family prayer thanking Jesus for His provision, protection, love and peace. Gather everyone to sing Happy Birthday to Jesus. Also, you can read or have a child read the Christmas story as told in the Gospel of Luke 1:26-2:4. That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. People tend to be a litt le more t houg ht f u l, families come together and the world seems to be a kinder, less impersonal place. T houg h Ch r ist mas for some, is a cu lt ura l event, its or ig ins lie in t he Christian faith. Although the exact date of Christ’s birth is unknown, it is the day that Christians come together to celebrate His birth. His whole life is a gift to us, He is our Savior and friend, and He will govern our lives if we give Him the reigns. Moreover, it is to our advantage to allow Him those reigns for He knows where He wants to take us and that far outweighs our illinformed plans…. On our own we are left to our devices, and we can ask ourselves, how is that working for us? Jesus can teach us how to live and how to treat each other. He is our ultimate example; His entire life is an example of servant hood. Yes, I know that servant hood holds a negative connotation for some, yet through servant hood we find our liberty. We do not serve or give grudgingly, or out of a sense of obligation. We are not trying to earn a reward or position with Him. No- we get to serve, we get to give and that is an honor. Giving gifts at Christmas time is a small token, a tangible expression of our love for each other. We choose gifts that we hope will reflect the personality of that individual. We can craft it from our hand or purchase it through our labor, in either case, it makes it special and I believe that pleases the heart of God. May we be that gift to each other, and to the world at large. May we live and love beyond our corner of the world. May we cherish the greatest gifts of all- the love of Christ and our love for each other.

Students at Christ Our Savior Catholic School in South Holland decorated a mitten tree for an Advent season project. Students collected mittens, gloves, scarves, hats and gloves and placed them on a Christmas tree outside of Principal Brodzik’s office. These

The students also hosted a month long donation d r ive to ra ise t he f u nds necessa r y to purchase the items for the care packages. The students raised over $2,500 through a GoFundMe account. The project was organized through an ongoing partnership with CLAS and the Lake Area United Way. Each semester the United Way helps CLAS to organize a Day of Caring volunteer project for their students. Now when they had seen Him, they made widely known the saying w h ic h w a s t old t he m concer n i ng t h is Ch i ld. And all those who heard it marveled at those things which were told them by the shepherds. But Mary kept all these things and pondered t hem i n her heart. When Christ ascended into heaven He gave us (believers) a gift, the Holy Spirit. WOW! Having God’s power within us is absolutely amazing to me and He gives us the peace that passes all understanding. L i ke ever yone else i n t h is world of disappointment and sometimes despair, I have been through many trials, some big and some small but with every trial, I have grown closer to God and I thank Him for that every day. God will take us through all of our trials and He will mold us and make us grow through it all. I have learned that I need to stand still and let God move and let God fight my battles for me. I have also learned that because God is almighty, I have been set free from thinking that I need to manipulate circumstances, ma neuver people, ma nu fact u re resources, or move ahead of God in order to bring to pass what He has for our lives. So this Christmas let’s put Christ back in Christmas the way it should be and just praise Him for who He is and what He has done for us at the Cross. If we believe in His finished work on the Cross, we have the HOPE of spending eternal life with Him. So please join with me this Christmas season to worship the King of kings and the Lord of lords and to give God the glory for the great things He has done!! The program is structured to train volunteers to become one-on-one tutors for adu lts in need of basic literacy skills. Instruction in basic literacy includes t he development of phonetic reading skills combined w ith communication sk ills. SSC is encouraging residents to ta ke this opportunity to volunteer as a tutor or encourage someone you know to take advantage of the free program. New tutor training sessions will take place on both the Main Campus and Oak Forest Campus in December 2015 and January 2016. The tutor training is an 18-hour program that culminates with literacy training certification. Once certified, the tutors will go out to visit their adult learners at locations in or near their neighborhoods.
