Dog Rules For The Holidays

ARLO KALLEMEYN 1. Be especia l ly patient with your humans during t his t ime. They may appear to be more stressed-out than usual and they will appreciate long comforting dog talks. 2 . T he y m a y c ome home with large bags of things they call gifts. Do not assume that all the gifts are yours. 3. Be tolerant if your humans put decorations on you. T hey seem to get some special kind of pleasure out of seeing how you look with fake antlers. 4. T he y m a y br i n g a l a r g e t r e e i nt o t he house a nd set it up in a prominent place a nd cover it with lights and decorations. Biza rre as this may seem to you, it is an important ritual for your humans, so there are some things you need to know: a. Don’t pee on the tree b. Don’t drink water in the container that holds the tree c. Mind your tail when you are near the tree d. If there are packages under the tree, even ones that smell interesting or that have your name on them, don’t rip them open e. Don’t chew on the cord that runs from the funny-looking hole in the wall to the tree 5. Your humans may

occasiona lly inv ite lots of strangers to come visit during this season. These parties can be lots of fun, but they also call for some discretion on your part: a. Not a l l st ra ngers appreciate kisses b. Don’t eat of f t he buffet table c . B e g f or g o o d ie s subtly d. Be pleasant, even if unknowing strangers sit on your sofa e. Don’t drink out of glasses that are left within your reach 6. L i kew ise, you r hu ma ns may ta ke you v isit i ng. Here you r m a n ner s w i l l a l s o b e important: a. Obser ve a l l t he rules in #4 for trees that may be in other people’s houses. (4a is particularly important) b. Respect the territory of other animals that may live in the house c. Tolerate children 7. A big ma n w it h a white beard and a ver y loud laugh may emerge from your fireplace in the middle of the night. DON’T BITE HIM!! Don’t Let the Holiday Blues Get You Down For many people the holiday season is full of celebrations and cheer, but for some, this season can bring more misery than merriment. With high expectations of giftgiving, decorating, feasting and family gathering, feelings of disappointment, sadness, fatigue, frustration or being overwhelmed are not unusual. Psychologists point out that there is a difference between the holiday blues, which are often temporary and go away once the season ends, and more serious conditions such as depression, seasonal affective disorder and anxiety disorders. “If people are already experiencing stress or sadness in other areas of their life, they may be especially vulnerable to these feelings during the holidays,” Carrie Cadwell, PsyD, HSPP, Public Education Campaign Coordinator for the Indiana Psychological Association said. “However, the holidays can be a great opportunity to enhance psychological well-being.” “When we can identify significant distress, we know t hat t reat ment helps,” says Cadwel l. “T he SA MHSA (Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration) 2013 Behavioral Health Barometer Report highlights that approximately 65-68% of youth and adults who receive Apt. for rent: Lansing, 17723 Park Blvd., 2-bdrm., 1st flr., new carpet, new paint. treatment here in Indiana report improved functioning.” It is important that individuals and families be aware of their loved ones and seek help when needed. Even in the absence of professional help, there are steps people can take to help themselves over the holiday season. The Indiana Psychological Association and the American Psychological Association offer these tips to combat the holiday blues: Take time for yourself — Even w it h pressure to be everything to everyone, remember that you’re only one person and can only accomplish certain things. Sometimes self-care is the best thing people can do. Go for a walk, hang out with a friend, watch a movie or take time out to listen to music or read a new book. Everyone needs time to recharge their batteries — by slowing down, people will actually have more energy to accomplish their goals. Volunteer — Find a local charity, such as a soup kitchen or a shelter where families can volunteer together. Not only is giving back a great way to spend time with loved ones during the holidays, but helping others has been shown to reduce stress and improve overall mood. Have realistic expectations — No holiday celebration is perfect. View inev itable missteps as opportunities to

demonstrate flexibility and resilience. A lopsided tree or a burned brisket won’t ruin the holiday; rather, it will create a family memory. If the children’s wish lists are outside the budget, talk to them about the family’s finances this year and remind them that the holidays aren’t about expensive gifts. Remember what’s important — The barrage of holiday advertising can make people forget what the holiday season is really about. When the holiday expense list is running longer than the monthly budget, scale back and be reminded that what makes a great celebration is loved ones, not storebought presents, elaborate decorations or gourmet food. Seek support — Talk about the anxiety, stress or sadness with friends and family. Getting things out in the open can help people navigate their feelings and work toward a solution for the holiday blues. If the feelings persist, consider seeing a mental health professional, such as a psychologist, who is uniquely trained to understand the connection bet ween t he mind and body. Psychologists can offer strategies on creating attainable goals, changing unhealthy behaviors, and addressing emotional issues. Peace on Earth Long ago it was prophesied that peace would come upon the earth. But not in the way that people thought it would arrive. God’s way of providing peace was to send His Son, His only begotten Son....Jesus. Scripture says in Isaia h 9: 6 that his name shall be called, “The Prince of Peace.” Mankind looked for a thing but God had determined before the foundation of the world to send a person. This person, Jesus, would be God in the flesh. In John 1:14 we are told that the Word became flesh and dwelt among us. The Word, by being incarnated brought God into humanity. This was done solely by a sovereign act of God because of His great love for us. God’s intent was to reconcile man to Himself through His Son. Because of sin, ever y person was at enmit y w it h God. And because we were sinners, we needed redemption. Home for rent: Calumet City fully furnished, section 8 welcome, $1450/mo. + sec. deposit. Also Room for rent: $120/wk. + deposit. Utilities included, and use of house. Call Algie. 708-890-5405

Because we were also enemies of God, we needed reconciliation. Without this, we could have no real peace. Therefore, God sent His Son in the likeness of human flesh so that we could be justified through the blood of the cross of Christ. When anyone believes upon the Lord Jesus, his sins are forgiven, he is reconciled to God and he receives peace. This peace is the person of God Himself who enters into the man or woman who receives Him. Peace is not something that man can accomplish in or of himself. Nor is it merely the absence of war or turmoil in this world. Peace can only reign in our hearts through Christ the Lord. This Christmas let every heart prepare Him room and receive His wonderful gift of peace. Pastor Pete Tassio The King’s Community Church

Hammer Toes

Hammer toes are actually a curling of the toes. Sometimes these are flexible and can be straightened with manipulation, or fixed which means they are always curled with arthritic changes that don’t allow straightening. Many times corns are found on the tops of these toes. Surgery can be performed to straighten these toes or occasional trimming of the corns can alleviate some of the pain. If you have any questions concerning hammer toes or any other problems, please stop by or call my office during office hours.

CALUMET CITY LIGHTS USHER IN THE HOLIDAYS

The much anticipated Christmas season in Calumet City was officially launched on Friday December 5th, 2014 with the official tree lighting and Santa parade. Kids of all ages came to City Hall, 204 Pulaski Road that evening to await the dazzling lights and the arrival of Santa and Mrs. Claus. An added highlight of the festivities was the arrival of the Christmas Reindeer, all the way from their Rantoul, Illinois home, Hardy’s Reindeer Ranch. The Reindeer are one of Mayor Michelle introduces St. Nick to the crowd. Calumet City Mayor Michelle Markiewicz Qualkinbush’s favorite parts of the event. The Reindeer visited with residents from a pen in the park across from city hall. After the crowd said good by to the Reindeer, it was time for Santa and Mrs. Claus’ arrival in the Santa sleigh. They led the merry band of revelers north on Wentworth to Calumet Children were able to feed and pet the reindeer from Hardy’s Reindeer Ranch. Memorial Park where the children stood in line to take pictures with Santa, receive their candy canes and tell the jolly old elf of their Christmas wishes. Speaking of Elves, Mayor Michelle had all her City Hall ‘helpers’ at the tree lighting that night including City Clerk Nyota Figgs; City Treasurer Gerry Tarka, 2nd Ward Alderman Leni Wosczynski, Police Chief Edward Gilmore, Fire Chief William Galgan, Debbie Sellers, Denise Rzonca, and Gerry Surufka. The Mayor admits that Christmas is her favorite holiday and she hopes that residents enjoy the seasonal festivities as much as she does! “I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year!”

MARJORIE ALICE DEVRIES Just before Abraham L incoln was elected President of the United St ates, t here w a s t a l k of a civil war. There also s e e me d t o b e a c i v i l dispute within the Locke fa m i ly. T he se a re t he grandchildren of Captain Benjamin Locke, a revolutionary war hero. Benjamin Locke (the captain’s grandson) wrote this letter to his brother and sister about the family dispute: Haverhill, Scioto Co., Ohio Oct 14th, 60 Dear Brother and Sister, We received yours of the 7th yesterday and hasten to answer by the first mail which will be tomorrow, we were glad to hear you were all well and were having such fine weather and good crops both human and vegetable, our farm crops have been fully up to an average but of the other crop none—our health has been very good, Delmont has not had any of his fits nearly a year and his health is now pretty good but he is not able to labor much. I enjoy very good health except being troubled some with a cough but not bad, Cynthia enjoys her usual health but has failed rather more by old age than I have, the others of our family all well~ I wa s a stonished to l e ar n th at D elli e an d For sale: 3 ft. tree with stand, $10; dozen pink ornaments, $3; bent handle snow shovel $18; large fresh tree 20” stand $14. 708-460-8308 For sale: Oak kitchen table w i t h f o u r c a p t . c h a i r s, cushioned seats, and backs, caster wheels $200; Beer keg. cooler, best offer. 708-8890350

William claimed to have any control over my share in Mother’s dower, if I gave Brother Delmont a deed to that effect it was done inadvertently, I sold my share of Father’s real estate to Delmont at its then appraised value, not including my claim in Mother’s dower, I have no recollection of there being anything said about buying or selling that part of my claim, of this I am certain I never received anything for it; Brother Delmont could not have thought he had a claim to the property, if he had he would not have paid me my share of the timber which was sold off of Mother’s dower, which he did (if I remember right the sum was about $11,00). We’l l continue Benja m i n’s let ter nex t week. If you’re wondering w hy t here’s a c om m a i n $11,0 0 ( me nt ione d above)… t hen joi n my club. I can’t confirm if its $11.00 or $11,000. when to step away and call it a day. We need to do whatever we can to make the holidays easier and more enjoyable, “take whatever short cuts necessary,” is my motto. Yes, my frame of mind is more positive as I am penning this on my day off. I’ve had a chance to catch my breath and I have determined to do less than I intended. Part of the issue I struggle with is overbook ing myself, most people do, and they carry this mentality into the holidays then they wonder why they feel overwhelmed. We need to focus on the moment, what do we really need to do today? What can wait? Can we ask anyone for help? I know many may laugh at that one, yet seriously, if you need help you should be able to ask the people closest to you, yet what can make all the difference in the world is the approach. No matter how agitated, take care that your tone is not accusatory! Always ask with gentleness and with respect. Often we treat strangers with greater regard than we treat those dea rest to us. Remember, we a re a ll human and generally we do want to do right by one another. My prayer is that we enjoy the holidays, and love each other not perfectly, yet love each other nonetheless…

Illinois Commerce Commission a nd Attorney General Lisa Madigan issued an alert to utilit y customers about a scam targeting residents in the Chicago area and Northern Illinois in which someone claiming to be a utility employee asks for immediate payment of a bill either at a customer’s door, over the telephone or by email. The ICC and t he Attorney Genera l’s Office have received complaints from utility customers about scam artists claiming to be utility representatives, telling customers that their ser v ice w ill be disconnected unless payment is made directly to the scammers. The scam artist may direct the consumer to purchase a prepaid credit card, a “Cash Card,” and to call them back with the personal identification number (PIN). The stories can vary, for example, with the scammer saying that the customer’s billing cycle has changed and payment must be made immediately, that the account is past due and payment can be made to them directly to avoid disconnection of the utility service, or the customer’s previous payment was rejected or never received. Complaints have doubled in the past year, with victims paying up to $8,000 to the con artists. Complaints indicate the scammers may be targeting small businesses and Latino residents in particular. “Any time you are asked upfront for money in an unsolicited call or knock at your door, that is a universal red flag for a scam,” Madigan said. “Utility companies do not go door-to-door collecting payments. Instead utility customers should report any solicitation immediately to the Attorney General’s Office, the ICC or their utility company directly.” IC C C h a i r m a n D ou g S c ot t n ot e d t he sig n i f ic a nt i nc rea se i n c u stomer

complaints about these illegal scams and urged consumers to protect themselves by contacting their utility or the ICC. “We want all consumers and businesses who feel t hey a re bei ng pressu red or scammed to end the conversation w ith potential scammers and call their utility ser v ice prov ider or t he ICC Consumer Services Division to check out the claims,” Scott said. “You do not have to sign anything or give personal information to anyone calling you on the phone, sending you an e-mail or showing up at your door. If you feel something’s not quite right about the situation, get the utility’s phone number off your bill, call the utility and ask for help.” Attorney General Madigan and the ICC offer these reminders to utility customers: • Never provide personal information to anyone who comes to the door or calls you claiming to be a representative of the utility. • Contact the utility at the phone number listed on your bill to confirm the caller or the representative at your home is a verifiable employee of t he utilit y. Do not ca ll a different number suggested by the potential scammer and do not let them into your home. • Utilit y field personnel in Illinois do not take payments from consumers. Be on guard with anyone who asks for your personal information, or says you must pay immediately and suggests a method to get the money quickly. If you suspect you have been scammed, have a suspicious incident to report or have questions, contact Madigan’s Consumer Fraud Hotline at 1-800-386-5438 or file a complaint on her website. Consumers can also file complaints with the ICC at 1-800524-0795.

WARNING: Scam Artists Posing as Utility Company

The Teachers’ Forum I love this mystical, magical time of year, my happiest childhood memories took place around Christmas time, a time when family came together and celebrated the wonder of Christmas. People seemed a little kinder, more generous in heart and attitude, more willing to make allowance for the flaws of others… Conversely, we tend to expect a great deal at this time of year. We strive to make everything perfect. We idealize, we romanticize, and in turn, often put on the shoulders of fallible human beings unrealistic expectations. We also place t hose u n rea list ic ex pectat ions upon ourselves. We want to make the “perfect meal”, give the “perfect gift”. When we play the host or hostess we feel that it is our sole responsibility to make sure that everyone has a great time even if their disposition tends to be unpleasant! W hen we tr y too hard the natural tendency is to fall short, this seems like a no-brainer yet look around at all the stressed out people that wish the holidays were far behind them… how sad! Yes, it is true that Learning to enjoy the holidays can in and of its self become an art form, for if we are not careful, we can easily become entangled in the frantic, frenzy that marks the tail end of the holidays. The bottom line is we need to know

(Never known to fail.) Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in Eternal Glory. Thank you for your mercy toward me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days. After 3 days, the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. VB

Area Residents Share Fellowship at Township Holiday Dinner

More than 1000 residents of the south suburban area enjoyed a complimentary traditional holiday turkey dinner and all the trimmings. _______________________________________

Residents from throughout Thornton Township, the south suburbs, northwest Indiana and Chicago gathered in the spirit of fellowship at Thornton Township’s annual Community Holiday Dinner. Co-sponsored by Thornton Township and South Suburban College the event began as a Thanksgiving dinner for the homeless in 2000 and is now open to everyone bringing all segments of the community together. Those in attendance enjoyed a complimentary traditional turkey dinner with all the trimmings prepared by Jimboo’s Catering and served by volunteers from the township, SSC, area churches, community organizations, local businesspeople and elected officials. The event continues to attract new volunteers. Colin and Jamie Cutler of Dyer, IN came out serve because they enjoy giving back to the community. Jamie became acquainted with the township and the many programs it provides through Thornton Township Clerk Jacqueline Rivera. “I work at Suburban Access in Homewood and we were able to provide clothing and turkey dinners for 25 families in the township for Thanksgiving. It was our pleasure to provide assistance,” she said. Deborah Ward from South Holland was another first time volunteer for this event. “I’m just a servant for the Lord. I love to serve wherever I can,” she said. The event is designed to bring together people from all walks of life so they can get to know each other while breaking bread together. Rivera praised Supervisor Frank Zuccarelli for his ongoing commitment to serve those in need and to work to unite the community by offering events like this. Zuccarelli was unable to attend the dinner due to illness. Melody Means of Chicago came to the dinner with her mother and daughter and her daughter’s friends. She said atmosphere was welcoming, warm and friendly. Donald Kramer of South Holland and his friend Stephen Protector of City’s Health. Troy Maatman Plumbing, Inc. The Gift of Reconciliation

Random Reads

ANNA M. CAISON The most precious gifts are the ones that are God given, that express the Gospel message over and over again in the lives of those who have surrendered to His touch. On November 14, my husband and I exchanged one of those God given gifts w ith each other------the Gift of Reconciliation. And the time we spent together from that day unto the day he took his last breath was more glorious then when we first married 41 years ago. The 13 years of separation seemed to have never happened as we repented and asked each other for forgiveness. This renewed relationship was different, richer and more meaningful than what we had before. My visits to his bedside were filled w ith intimate discussions about life, God, the scriptures, our children and us. Sometimes we’d sit in silence holding hands, enjoying each other’s company. On weekends I’d spend the night with him at the hospital. Together we’d watch the sun set and awake early the next day to witness the sun rise; taking in all the beauty and wonder of God’s masterpiece in the sky. The day after Thanksgiving, he asked me to marry him. I said, “Yes!” And

on December 6, our youngest daughter handed me 2 velvet grey colored ring boxes. One of the boxes held a diamond engagement ring, and the other contained a wedding band with a diamond chip. In a 3rd box that she handed to her dad was a matching wedding band for him. At his request she had smuggled in champagne to celebrate the occasion. On December 8, my husband slipped into a coma and on the following evening at approx i mately 7: 55pm made h is transition from time into eternity with the Lord. A few days later I noticed the purchase receipt attached to one of the boxes that held our rings. It was dated March 11, 2003, 4 years after we had divorced. However, after each of the students w rite in t heir journa ls, they realize this isn’t an ordinary English class at all. Belzhar i s a f r ag i le s t o r y. E v e r y t h i n g i s present; cha racters, plot, setting, but you’re not qu it e s u r e w h at ’s holding it all together. At a ny minute, t he façade w i l l fa l l away a nd t he truth will present itself. Belzhar is a quick read, but is filled with a depth t hat w ill continue your thoughts once you close cover for t he last time. I wa s not ex pect i ng what I discovered when reading Belzhar. Trut h is irrelevant. Facts are subjective. Dreams are reality.

The Leading Edge

‘Tis the Season for Generous Leadership RENEE N. HALE, DSL Ever yone knows t hat t h is t i me of yea r is t he “g iv ing” t ime of yea r! Fol k s ca r r y food and packages to friends and neighbors, charities out s ide pu bl ic pl a c e s col lect donat ions, a nd non-profits solicit yeare nd f i n a n c i a l g i v i n g . W hat about each one of us, individually? Is there a ny t h i ng mot ivat i ng us from the inside to be generous and giv ing in situations where we have opportunities to give of ou r selves to t hose we lead? “I’m not a leader,” you say! But you are—you lead yourself first, then others around you every day—even if you’re not the “boss”. Engage in generous leadership; then, make it a year-round lifestyle. Be generous in effort. Go the extra mile in doing your job. There’s nothing better than a volunteer employee ! This is someone who chooses to do more than is required on the job. You can lead colleagues by showing this kind of above-and-beyond ac t ion . It ’s not a b out gaining recognition for yourself; rather, it’s about seeing where attent ion and service can help and investing yourself there. It’s “others” focused living. Be generous in random deeds of kindness. Serving those you meet in public who need even l it t le things, like help carrying packages, mu lt ipl ies kindness and generosity significantly beyond just you. Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: My Home has been on the market for 8 months now with no offers. My home needs some updating, but I know it is worth what I am asking for it. I have had few showings. Any suggestions? Answer: A Sellers Lament: It’s been 53 weeks since my house went for sale. And to transfer my energy to updating, not whining. I’m changing some fixtures and adding new floors, In hopes to see more buyers come through those ‘new’ doors. My plan must be working, more buyers are here. I can feel it coming, a sale is near. But another month passed, with no offer in sight,

That light in the tunnel is not looking too bright. The Realtor said to lower the price. Then I told him my thoughts, which weren’t very nice. I’ll give it some thought, I disgustingly said, As he left my home, shaking his head. My house is worth more, I’ve lived here for years. So many memories and blood, sweat and tears. But I lowered my price, just as I was told. And a couple weeks later, my home finally Sold. Jim & Cathy Wish you & your Family a Wonderful Holiday Season and a Very Happy 2015! Sometimes You Must Play Rough

WOODROW WILCOX I n e a r l y D e c em b er 2014, a cl ient sent me a copy of a letter from a federa l agenc y. T he let ter ex pla i ned t hat t he cl ient wou ld get a check for $527 from the federa l gover n ment i n about 45 days. Then, the government would get its money from the hospital in Illinois t hat ignored Medicare rules and forced our client to pay $527 to avoid harm to his credit or being sued. The client had already p a id t he $ 527 t o t he hospital in Illinois when he ca me to ou r of f ice to ask why the Medicare supplement i n su r a nc e policy that our insurance agency had sold to him did not pay the bill. W hen I invest igated the matter with our client, I learned that the hospital filed a claim incorrectly and that Medicare ruled that the hospital could not charge our client $527. I wrote three polite-but to t he point-letters to t he hospital asking it to refund the wrongfully collected money from our client and to file the claim correctly if it wanted any money for the service. A f ter t he hospita l ref u sed to ref u nd ou r client’s money, I helped our client file a complaint against the hospital for not follow ing Medicare billing rules, for ignoring a ruling of Medicare, and for using the mail and phone to wrongfully extract $527 from our client. Our client paid that to the hospital before seeing me in order to avoid negative credit reports or a lawsuit from the hospital. Medicare’s Screening Invest igat ion Un it contacted the hospital to ask for its side of the story.

SIDING & GUTTER ICAN

The hospital ignored the request for information from this federal government agency. That was a bad move for the hospital. The final result of this story is that our client will get his money back and the federal government is sure to get its money back from the hospital. I suspect that the hospital will have a few additional expenses from this matter, too. The money was extracted from our client t h roug h t he hospita l’s threats of credit damage or law su it. W hen my let ters to t he hospit a l d id n’t w ork , I h ad to do somet hing else. Sometimes, you must play rough. All the help that I gave to this client was FREE OF CHARGE. The owners, managers, and staff of this insurance agency really do care about our senior citizen clients. We “go the extra mile” to protect our senior citizen clients w hene ver m i st a ke s or misdeeds in the Medicare system threaten to cause our clients some financial harm. Does your insurance agency give this high level of service to its senior citizen clients? If not, why not? Note : Woodrow Wi lcox is the senior medical bill c a se worker at Sen ior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of t hat i nsu ra nce agenc y over one million dollars by correcting medical bill er rors in t he Medica re system. He even wrote t h e b o o k S O LV I N G MEDIC A R E PROBLEM $ (w w w.solv ingmedicareproblems.com).

God, in the workplace? MIKE BUDER L et ’s f l a s h bac k to Christmas Eve 2013. I was enjoy i n g a C h r i s t m a s celebration for employees of on e of t h e f a m i l y owned companies that I work w it h. T he phone ra ng a nd t he secreta r y a nswered it. Her i nt ro and outro were pleasant enough, but there was no mention of the holiday. The owner of the business asked her why. “I don’t want to offend anyone,” she sa id. “I happen to know that you celebrate Christmas,” he said. “Our fa mily is a Christia n family and we celebrate Christmas. I want you to feel comfortable wishing people a Merry Christmas if you so choose.” It was a courageous statement and one that made me proud to work with this familyow ned business. Ma ny people today think that we must be pol it ica l ly correct in our interactions with others, especially in our businesses. If you ask me, it’s pretty sad. We live in a country where men and women have fought for centuries so that we could have the freedom to express our beliefs. In the past century, we’ve seen movements such as that of the great Martin Luther King, Jr. to ensure that people of all colors and faiths have equal rights. We’ve seen political fights so that people can express t hei r love for whoever they want-whether they be opposite or same sex. In Germany, we fought aga inst t he oppression of all those people under Hitler. We’ve fought for t he g reatest abi l it y to ex press who we a re as individuals…and yet when it comes to our faith or religion, so many people sudden ly feel si lenced. I am not offended when someone w i shes me a Happy Hanukah, Kwanza

or a n y ot h e r h o l i d a y that I don’t celebrate. I appreciate the fact that people are who they are and they aren’t afraid to express that. I know some of t he t hings I ex press about my faith get some people fired up. And that’s ok! The men and women who fought and died for this country did so just as much for your right not to believe as they did for my right to express my belief. I’m not really sure when people’s “feelings” outweighed the rights of other people to talk about faith. I don’t discriminate w hen it c ome s to t he businesses we work with. I don’t have a problem working with people of all faiths or for that matter no faith. But I personally respect a nd appreciate bu s i ne s s ow ne r s w ho a r e n’t a f r a i d t o t a l k about God. I believe we find God every where we look. He’s in every faith, in every f lower, in every interaction and in every child. I don’t preach to my clients and co-workers, but I’m a lso not a fra id to have a conversat ion about God. How about you? Does God have a role in your workplace in any way, shape, or form? Oh and by the way – Merry Christmas and God bless you and your family! Financial Advice Column

Time for a Family Meeting to Discuss Financial Preparations? BOB KRYGSHELD Du r i ng t he hol iday sea son, you no doubt have a lot going on in your life — work f unct ions, gatherings w ith friends and neighbors, tracking down the elusive “perfect gift,” etc. But you may f ind it va luable to add one more event to your calendar: a family meeting to discuss those financial preparations that affect you and your loved ones. Of course, the scope of your meeting will depend on your age and the age of your children, and on whether you have elderly pa rent s. So, let ’s look at one fa m i ly meet i ng scenario that would work under two different sets of circumstances: you are meeting with your own grown children or you are meeting with your elderly parents. In either case, you’ll wa nt to rev iew t he following areas: • Investment information — It’s a good idea to let you r g row n ch i ld ren know where you (and your spouse, if still living) keep you r i nvest ment s a nd what sort of investments and retirement accounts you ow n, such as your IRA, 401(k), and so on. You should also provide your children with the name of your financial advisor. And talk to your parents about their investments. You might think that this c ou ld b e c h a l le n g i n g topic to bring up, but you might be surprised at their willingness to talk. • Estate planning d o c u m e n t s — C omprehen si ve e st ate planning can involve a variety of legal documents, such as a will, a living trust, power of attorney, etc. If you have already created t hese doc u ment s, you need to share both their location and their intent with your grown children, who will be active players in carrying out your estate plans. The same is true with your elderly parents — try to encourage them to share all their estateplanning documents with you, especially if they will

be counting on you for their care. • Names of professional adv isors — As you put together your estate plans, you will likely need to work with a team of financial, ta x a nd lega l adv isors. Ma ke sure your g row n children know the names of t hese professiona l s and how to contact them. Similarly, seek the same infor mat ion f rom your parents. • Wishes for future living a r r a n g e m e n t s — It ’s cer ta in ly possible t hat you will be able to live independently your whole life. On the other hand, you may eventually need some type of long-term care, such as that provided in a nursing home or an assisted-living residence. Let your children know what your feelings a re about such a possibility, and what preparations you have made. And try to elicit the same information from your own parents. • Fu nera l or bu r ia l instructions — Admittedly, you ca n probably f i nd t opic s t h a t a r e m or e pleasant to discuss than funeral plans. Yet, if you ma ke you r ow n bu r ia l or cremat ion pla ns i n advance, and possibly even prepay for them, you will be taking a tremendous burden off the shoulders of your loved ones, who won’t be forced to make difficult decisions — or scramble for money at shor t notice — during a highly emotional time in their lives. Once again, you’ll also want to learn about your parents’ desires for their final arrangements, and what steps they may have already taken in this area. By holding a fa mily meet i ng about t hese i ssues today, you c a n avoid a lot of stress and misunderstandings in the future. So bring out the coffee and cookies — and start talking. HOLIDAY FUNDRAISER FOR DARLA WINL AND OF VALPARAISO: Over $3100 was raised Sunday December 14th, 2014 in a charity Cut-A-Thon held at Utopia Salon in Merrillville, to benefit cancer patient Darla Winland of Valparaiso. Darla is pictured here with her family, husband Bob standing next to her, brother Breck Wall at right and sons Charles Liodos, 17 and Andreas Liodos, 13. Not pictured is 18 year old Thano Liodos. In another picture are the stylists who volunteered their time and talent to giving the $10 haircuts: from left, seated in chair is Breck Wall, Stylists (and clients) Amy Floyd, Britney Fulton, Char Coglianese, at whose Utopia Salon the event was held, Melinda Hollifield and Jeannette Jackson seated in chair. There was a silent auction and many donations by the likes of: The Chandlery; Advantage Signs; the Performing Arts Center, Munster; Little Chef Pastries; Round the Clock; Albert’s; Strack and Van Tils, among many others. Darla has lobular breast cancer( dense breast cancer that mammography does not pick up) and as a result had a mastectomy, a hysterectomy and is in a series of radiation and chemo treatments. Her prognosis remains guardedly optimistic as she undergoes treatment at Northwestern and Rush. Donations are still being sought for Darla. Call Char Coglianese at 219-6636033 for information. N 2 N was at this fundraiser and it was absolutely thrilling to see so many family, friends and generous strangers come out to support Darla and her valiant efforts to beat cancer. Darla has a warning for women with dense breasts: “A mammography will not detect cancer in either lobular or ductal types. You need to get an MRI or an ultrasound and 20% of women have such density in their breasts. I had annual monograms and exactly 6 months after I had one and got the all clear, this happened!” ***
