She has a dynamic spirit and a gift for working with people. She is respected by all who know her and will be greatly missed,” said Queen of Peace High School Principal Hedi Belkaoui. Malone will be remembered for the energy and enthusiasm she brings to her classroom. “I’m really sad Mrs. Malone is retiring because she is such a great teacher and her class is a lot of fun. PE definitely won’t be the same without her,” said sophomore Ashley Murphy. A sentiment echoed by current and former students. Malone is a staple in Chicago having also taught and coached at Mother McAuley High School, Brother Rice High School and St. Ignatius College Preparatory High School. In addition to her accomplishments in the classroom, Malone is an esteemed volleyball coach who has amassed countless awards throughout her career including Illinois State Volleyball Coach of the Year (1980, 1981 and 1982), City Volleyball Coach of the Year (1980 and 1981) and induction into the Girls Catholic Athletic Association Hall of Fame.

Patti’s All-American Annual Holiday Recital Ensemble
CATHY & JIM HIGGINS I went to the closet to store a few toys. W hen I opened t he door t here wa s nothing but noise. Box after box fell on to the floor. It took all my power to close that big door! Down to the basement to store all this stuff. I was looking for room, but there wasn’t enough. So out to the garage to find some more space. But it was loaded with boxes all over the place. It’s time to move, this house is too small. I’ll get on the phone & give my Banker a call. He looked at my numbers and said you’re Approved! Let’s start packing our stuff and get on with this move. We’re looking at homes, we know we’ll find one. But after 36 viewings, there really were none. Ugly green carpet, everything outdated. T he ads on t hese homes were way overrated. We asked our Realtor, is there anything nice? She said yes there is, but you’ll have to up your price. We weren’t very happy, she could see on our face.
She said $10,000 higher and you’ll find a nice place! The home on Elm Street was pretty as a picture. With Beautiful flooring and outstanding fixtures. Granite counters and Stainless Steel. We can see that this home is a really good deal. The look on our face went from frown to smile We had found our dream home, but it did take a while. It has triple the space, this home is just great! Let’s make an offer, before it’s too late. Sellers accepted our offer, we are so delighted. Plus nervous and anxious, but definitely excited! Christmas in our new home, because the closing is near. Patti’s All-American in Dyer hosted two holiday-themed dance recitals on Sunday, December 18 at Lake Central High School in St. John. The dancers ranged in age from 2 – 18 with various types of dance showcased include tap, ballet, jazz, pointe, lyrical, hip hop, and many preschool numbers. Under the direction Dance Manager, Robin Arvanitis, the children performed to various holiday inspired songs and wore festive dance costumes while parents and loved ones watched. Both shows were a huge success w ith Patti’s A ll-American staff,
parents, and Lake Central staff working together. Along with the recitals, there was also a free craft and vendor show. The craft and vendor show was open to the public and allowed guests and visitors to do some last minute Christmas shopping before and after the shows. Patti’s All-American is also celebrating 47 years in business this year. They teach gymnastics, tumbling, dance, Ninja Zone, Gym-N-Learn Educational Preschool, and swim. ANNA M. CAISON Last mont h a fa it hf u l ser va nt a nd wa r r ior went home to be w it h t he Lord. W hen I learned of her passing I experienced a moment of shock and grief followed by overwhelming joy because she had been gra nted rest from her labors. Ruth was an evangelist at heart. Her burning desire was that everyone she met heard the gospel message and be given opportunity to receive Christ as their Savior. She was a light to her family and her community. She was one of a group of senior women who supported me in ministry with prayers and words of encouragement. Ruth fought the good fight, she finished the race, she kept the faith. I know there is a victor’s crown reserved for her. In remembering Ruth Stewart, I’ve included a piece she submitted a few years ago, from “Christmas Memories from our readers.” We continue with Christmas Memories from our readers w it h t he follow ing submission. “Isaiah 9:6 - For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the

government shall be upon His shoulder. His name sha ll be ca lled Wonderf ul C o u n s e l o r, t h e M i g h t y G o d , t h e Everlasting Father, and the Prince of Peace. I learned from a child what Christmas really means and why we are happy to exchange gifts. John 3:16 plainly tells us God loved us so much that He gave us the best gift anyone could receive, eternal life. It is not a physical gift, but a spiritual one that could never be destroyed or replaced. For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in Him, shall not perish, but have everlasting life. Christmas means to me “the JOY of the Lord” which is my strength, the PEACE of God which passeth all understanding. Let us all remember we can do without the “mas” but we cannot do without Christ. He is our hope of glory.” – Ruth Stewart For questions and/or comments, send an email to anna.a62@yahoo.com . Or you can write me at: Anna Caison, P.O. Box 529, Lansing, IL 60438.

Thornton Township Brightens The Holiday Season
Taking time out from their volunteer duties are Denise Branch, Vicki Pinter, Ted Vickers, Leslie Pinter and Tamara Hooker.
Dolton Trustee Tiffany Henyard, Township Assessor Cassandra Holbert and Stanley Brown, Dolton trustee and mayoral candidate stopped by to visit with the families receiving gifts and join them for pictures with Santa.
Volunteers Priscilla and Julie Macias helped distribute the holiday gifts for the children at the township’s Christmas Care program.
__________________________________
Margie Kendricks of Calumet City came to pick up gifts for her children. She was accompanied by son Jaylin, age 9. In addition to caring for her own children she is also a foster parent.
Rachel Clark walked into Thornton Township hall and was simply amazed. Her eyes turned to the thousands of wrapped gifts for kids and couldn’t believe an event like this existed. “I can only imagine how the kids feel like when they see everything,” said Clark, of Calumet City, who brought her son, Julius, 4, and six nephews. “It’s incredible that a program like this is available and I know so many families, including myself, are very thankful.” Thornton Township, the largest township in Illinois, gave away more than 4,500 toys to community residents as well as 1,400 holiday food baskets during its annual Christmas Care program. It’s a tradition that has become a staple of the township’s December programs for the past two decades in an effort to make the holidays more enjoyable for families. Each child receives at least three individual wrapped gifts. “This is one of my favorite programs all year,” said Frank M. Zuccarelli, Thornton Township supervisor. “It’s a great feeling when you see the excitement in a child’s eyes when they see all the wrapped presents, and then you see the parents so thankful that they can provide a good Christmas for their children.” The gifts provided allow families who are struggling to give their children a Christmas they could not otherwise provide. This was the first year Melissa Bradley from Lansing participated. Bailey has found it very difficult to make ends meet with the limited child support and assistance she receives for her three children. She has no family to assist her and is unable to work full time because she must spend much of her time caring for her son who has autism.“ I am so thankful for the gifts. Seeing Santa just makes their day,” she
said. Calumet City resident Lakesha Foucher said she is unable to provide gifts for her nine children on a low income. “We really appreciate all of the assistance the township provides,” she said. Throughout December, Thornton Township employees and volunteers wrap thousands of gifts, separating them by age group and families. It is a labor of love that has staff wrapping late into the weekday nights along with the weekends. In addition, the township gave families free onesies for newborns up to 24-months, understanding the need to provide an all-encompassing package of gifts, food and clothing. The township volunteers are special people who love helping others. South Holland residents Vicki and Leslie Pinter have been volunteering for the past six years. “We came here to drop off gifts one year and then started helping out,” We have met a lot of nice people,” said Vicki Pinter. “We’re on speed dial whenever the township needs assistance and we are always happy to help out.” Denise Branch and Tamara Hooker shared similar stories. Both were dropping off gifts and then assisted with the gift wrapping and later added other tasks. Sisters Pr isci l la a nd Ju l ie Macia s have a lso been volunteering for several years. Their mother Maria is the founder of the township’s Mexican Folklore Dance Group that performs at various events throughout the year. She also volunteers for her school district and church. Priscilla Macias said she likes to see the children get excited when

We like giving back to the community,” she said. Priscilla plans to make a career of helping others. She is currently in the graduate program for clinical social work at Aurora University. “The township enjoys helping families. That is what local government is supposed to do,” said Joyce Washington, Thornton Township trustee. “The community really comes out for this program and we are going to continue having this event for our residents.” Thornton Township recently received the Illinois Township of the Year award at the annual Township of Illinois Annual Educational Conference in Springfield. Illinois Again Tops List For #1 Nanny State. ARLO KALLEMEYN January 1 is the effective date for almost 200 new state laws passed by the Illinois General Assembly a nd signed by t he governor in 2016. Illinois has some big problems like no budget, unfunded pension debts, and people mov ing away, however our elected officials have been busy passing over 200 new laws. Here are some of my favorites. H B 572 3 P r ov ide s that a person convicted of operat i ng a veh icle w it hout a n i n su r a nc e policy shall be guilty of a petty offense instead of a business offense. Why ma ke it ea sier to get behind the wheel without insurance? H B 5 6 0 7 A l low s US sav i ngs bonds to be declared abandoned after b ei ng u nc l a i me d a nd unreedemed 5 years after final maturity and allows the treasurer to obtain a jud icia l deter m i nat ion that the bond has been re ver te d to t he st ate. Illinois needs the money so bad they will take ours when they think we won’t notice. H B 4 1 0 5 A l l o w s motorcycles rear lights to be blue. A ren’t motorcycles hard enough to see? SB 2303 Requires excess Assorted quilts, bedspreads and coverlets, some quilts handmade, $15-$20 ea; decorative toss pillows, $1$2 ea; duvet covers, assorted sizes, $3-$5 ea. 708-4816907
balances in certain funds to be transferred to GRF by Aug. 31. I’m surprised that any Illinois funds have excess balances in the first place. SB 2806 Raises the fine for v iol at i ng r a i l r oad c rossi ng law s. Not convinced a larger fine can fix stupid. H B 6 1 31 R e q u i r e s driver education teachers i nst r uct st udent s on proper act ions to ta ke during a traffic stop. How about “Obey the police officer. Period.” SB 0805 Requires license plates to be clearly visible. Yep, we need a law to tell people they can’t get a license plate and keep it in the glove box. HB 6287 Provides that no egg shall be offered for sa le for consumers u s e 45 d a y s or mor e after candling. Good to know my omelet will be sufficiently candled. HB 5788 Adds catfish to the list of aquatic life that may be taken by pitchfork, spea r g un or bow a nd a r r o w. C a t f i s h m u s t not have a high priced lobbyist in Springfield. Arlo Kallemeyn Shopper Publisher a nd big fan of elected officials taking care of business.

Random Reads BRANDI SMITS The Keepers: The Box and the Dragonfly By Ted Sanders Horace F. Andrews was positive that he passed a sign that said his name on it. While the sign did not say his name, it did say “House of Answers” which still kept Horace’s interest. After an encounter with a bizarrely tall man who smel led of br i m stone, Horace went on to check out this House of Answers for himself. Entry wasn’t a s e a s y a s op en i ng a door. Horace was met with puzzles and an odd reg i st r y book w it h a n old-fashioned quill and i n k wel l. Little did he know that the decision to come back would change e v er y t h i ng w ho k ne w about l i fe a nd rea l it y forever. W hen he retur ned, he met a ma n na med M r. Mei s ter. learned that the box was special. Items put in the b o x w ou l d d i s a p p e a r and return in exactly 24 hours. Also Horace could look through the box and see what would happen 24 hours into the future. Horace knew that there w a s somet h i ng big ger going on than he k new and it involved Mr. Meister and that strange tall man, whose name he learned w a s Dr. Jer icho. One n ig ht Horace obser ved a girl running from Dr. Jericho. The girl, Chloe, a lso had a n item f rom t he House of A nswers. Her item a l lowe d her to pass through objects like walls and trees. Horace and Chloe must make a decision to join a cause they aren’t even sure is the good side or spend the rest of their lives hiding from Dr. Jericho and his cohorts. This is a very intricately written story about magic a nd good ver su s e v i l. Horace a nd Ch loe a re fairly stock characters, but the details and originality of t he stor y more t han make up for it. I highly recommend this magical adventure that takes place on the streets of Chicago.

MIKE BUDER L e t ’s f l a s h b a c k t o Christmas Eve 2013. I was enjoy i ng a C h r i st m a s celebration for employees of one of the family owned compa nies t hat I work w it h. T he phone ra ng and the secretary picked up the phone. Her intro and outro were pleasant enough, but there was no mention of the holiday. The owner of the business asked her why. “I don’t want to offend anyone,” she sa id. “I happen to know that you celebrate Christmas,” he said. “Our fa mily is a Christ ia n family and we celebrate Christmas. I want you to feel comfortable wishing people a Merry Christmas if you so choose.” It was a courageous statement and one t hat made me proud to work with this family-owned business. Many people today think that we must be politically correct in our interactions with others, especially in our businesses. If you ask me, it’s pretty sad. We live in a country where men and women have fought for centuries so that we could have the freedom to express our beliefs. In the past century, we’ve seen movements such as that of the great Martin Luther King, Jr. to ensure that people of all colors and faiths have equal rights. We ’v e s e e n p o l i t i c a l f ig ht s s o t h at p e ople ca n ex press t hei r love for whoever they wantwhether they be opposite or same sex. In Germany, we foug ht aga i nst t he oppression of a ll t hese people under Hitler. We’ve fought for t he g reatest abi l it y to ex press who we are as individuals… and yet when it comes to our faith or religion, so ma ny people sudden ly feel silenced. I a m not
offended when someone w ishes me a Happy Hanukah, Kwanza or any other holiday that I don’t’ celebrate. I appreciate the fact that some of the t hings I ex press about my faith get some people f i red up. A nd t hat ok ! T he men a nd w omen who fought and died for this country did so just as much for your right not to believe as they did for my right to express my belief. I’m not really sure when people’s “feelings” outweighed the rights of other people to talk about faith. I don’t discriminate w hen it comes to t he businesses we work with. I don’t have a problem working with people of all faiths or for that matter no faith. But I personally respect a nd appreciate bu si ne s s ow ner s w ho a r e n’t a f r a i d t o t a l k about God. I believe we find God everywhere we look. He’s in every faith, in every f lower, in every interaction and in every child. I don’t preach to my clients and co-workers, but I’m also not afraid to have a conversation about G od. How about you ? Does God have a role in your workplace in a ny way, shape, or form? Oh and by the way – Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and God bless you and your family! Please, refile any claims for medica l ser v ices to our client for any date of service from Januar y 1, 2008 to the present after January 1, 2017. Our client did not cause this problem. Medicare c au s e d t h i s pr oblem . Please, cooperate with our client to get your claims processed correctly. T h a n k y ou for y ou r cooperation. ### T he help t hat I gave this client was FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency “goes t he extra m i l e” f o r o u r s e n i o r citizen clients. Does your insurance agent or agency g ive t h is h ig h level of service to senior citizen clients? If not, why not?
On December 19, 2016, one of our clients brought his friend to our office for my help. A few years ago, I had helped the client who brought his friend with a medical bill problem. His friend first talked to one of our agents who asked me to help. For over an hour, I made phone calls with the new client. He had Medica re. But, Medicare was not paying anything on his medical bills. He is from Greece and speaks Greek much better t ha n English. He lives in Sa int Joh n Township in Lake County, Indiana. In our phone calls, we discovered that Medicare did not update his record for almost nine years. He started using Medicare as his prima r y insurer on January 1, 2008. But, Medicare never changed h i s st at u s f rom bei ng on a n employer g roup insurance program – for nine years. At t he conclusion of ou r me et i ng , I w r ot e a “TO W HOM IT M AY CONCER N” let ter a nd made copies. I told him to take or send a copy of the letter to every doctor, hospita l, or laborator y that he had used and to which he owed money. Substituting t he words “our client” for the actual name of our client, here is the letter that I wrote. Everyone who believes the federal Medicare system works fine should read this letter. ### Our client and I phoned Medicare offices today to learn what was causing problems for his Medicare billing. Financial Advice Column
Year-end Taxsmart Investing Ideas BOB KRYGSHELD A s 2016 d r aw s to a close and we move into the holiday season, you probably have a lot going on in your life. But it may be worth your while to take some time to explore a few year-end investment and financial moves that can potentially pay off for you when you file your taxes in April. Here a re a few such moves to consider: • B o o s t y o u r 4 01( k ) contributions. Unless you have a “Roth” 401(k), your contributions are made with pretax dollars – so the more you put in, the lower your taxable income. Ask your employer if you can increase your 401(k) c ont r ibut ion s for t he remainder of the year. (For 2016, you can contribute up to $18,000 to you r 401(k), or $24,000 if you’re 50 or older.) Also, if you receive a bonus before the year ends, you may be able to put that toward your 401(k) too, thus deferring the taxes you’d have to pay on this extra income. • Add to your IR A. You actually have until April 18, 2017, to cont ribute to your IRA for the 2016 ta x year, but t he more you can put in now, the less you’ll have to come up w it h at t he f i l i ng deadline. Contributions to a traditional IR A are g e n e r a l l y d e d u c t i b le , but the deductibility is phased out if your income rises above certain levels. For 2016, you can put up to $5,500 in your IRA, or $6,500 if you’re 50 or older. (Roth IRA contributions are never deductible.) • Contribute to a 529 plan. When you contribute to a 529 plan, any earnings g row t h i s d i st r ibute d ta x-free, prov ided it is used for qualified higher educat ion ex penses. ( H o w e v e r, 5 2 9 p l a n distributions not used for
For sale: 2014 Chevy Cruze LS Auto, Sliver Ice Metallic, $12,849. Call 866-474-2222
these qualified expenses may be subject to federal and state taxes and a 10% penalty on the earnings.) Furt hermore, your 529 plan contributions may be deductible from your state taxes. • Be generous. It’s certainly t he season for g iv i ng, a n d w h e n y ou m a k e charitable gifts, you can both give and receive. By sending cash to a qualified charity, you can get a tax deduction, but if you look beyond your checkbook, you might gain even bigger benefits. Specifically, if you donate appreciated securities you’ve held for more than one year to charity, you can deduct the value of the securities, based on their worth when you make the gift. Plus, neither you nor the charity will have to pay capital gains taxes on the donated investments. • Con sider “t a xharvesting” opportunities. Try to identify the gains a n d l o s s e s y ou h a v e realized this year, as well as any gains you estimate may still be paid on some of y ou r i n v e s t m e nt s . By work i ng w it h you r financial advisor and tax professional, you may be able to find some “ta xharvesting” opportunities, in relation to these gains and losses, which could benefit you. So, there you have them: some “ta x-smart” ideas you may want to put to use. And since some of t hem need to be done before the year ends if you want to see the benefit on your 2016 tax return, consider ta k ing act ion soon. Overcoming Your Credit Card Crisis The battle with credit card debt can be a constant struggle against high interest rates and monthly payments that never seem to make a dent in what you owe. How is it possible to make monthly credit card payments and never get anywhere? This problem is caused by high interest rates that eats up most of your payments. Even though you make your minimum payment, you don’t make much headway eliminating the debt. Luckily, there’s a way to find debt relief without incurring more debts. Using certified credit counseling like Consolidated Credit, you can get
professional advice to identify the right solution for your needs. A certified credit counselor can review your options to see which solution is best for you. You can qualify for lower interest rates or even eliminate them, while consolidating your credit card debt into one easy payment to get you out of debt faster. Every financial institution differs, but most people see a reduction of total payments by up to 30-50% as they pay off debt faster. Freedom from debt can become a reality!

THE TOUCH OF CHRISTM AS-JOY PEACE AND HOPE: Was the theme of t he Leba non Lut hera n Chu rch of Chicago (Hegew isch) under the leadership of Pastor Frank Showers in a delightfully spirited Christmas Cantata Sunday December 18th, 2016. Pictured here at the Altar of Lebanon Lut hera n Chu rch a re t he si ngers under the direction of Lynn Ranos along with pianist Bunny Korbelik and Narrator Carol Kaim. The women are left to right: Becky Bryne; Lucille Sider; Joan Pearson; Donna Coon; Joanne David; Lisa Ubik; Shirley Baysinger; Kaylin Korbelik and Carol Hanna. The men, left to right are: Ben David; Rick Ranos; Gary David; Pastor Frank Showers and Carol Johnson. Following the Cantata refreshments were served in Memorial Hall and served by the Fellowship Club. The voices were enchanting and filled with the promise of the season. Director Lynn Ranos had the choir practicing since October and it showed in the professionalism and dynamics of the performances in two parts. The “Gloria” opened the evenings selections followed by “Love Came Down,” “Celebrate the Wonder,” Shout the Glad Tidings,” with Soloists Becky Berne; Lucille Sider; Lisa Ubik and Carol Hanna. The t houghtf ul “Christmas is Dawning” was followed by t he Interlude 2 of “Love Came Down,””and Noel. Sing Noel.” with the Trio of Kaylin Korbelik, Joan David and Joan Pearson soaring to the rafters! Next we, the audience, were invited to sing along with classic Christmas Carols, “Hark the Herald Angels Sing,” “The First Noel,” “Go Tell It on the Mountain,” Silent Night! Holy Night!” and “O Come All Ye Faithful.” The Second opening announced “There’s A Song in the Air,” a mystical, “Starlight,” Rise Up Shepherd,” with Soloist Gary David; “He Came Here for Me,” “Love Came Down” repeat and the rousing Gloria Finale,” which had us on our feet! This was N 2 N’s first Cantata and we were not disappointed! BravoBrava to All from Lebanon Lutheran Church! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! ***
Paolone and Paul Balcerak, standing at right. A great time was had by all and the food was delicious and all home made. As always, the vet’s gave thanks just for being there and for having survived some pretty harrowing experiences back in the day. Next up will be the Lansing Veteran’s Memorial Ceremonial Honor Guard’s annual Christmas Party Tuesday December 27th, 2016 at American Legion Post 330 in Calumet City. They will be planning the 25th anniversary of the founding of the HG coming later in 2017 and grand plans are being made to celebrate that event as well. *** BR E A K T IME FOR L INCOL N’S TASTY SANDWICHES IN HIGHLAND INDIANA: Owner Helen Stasinos of Dyer, In decided to take a couple days rest up after the Christmas holiday. She took Monday and Tuesday off after Christmas and will be taking Monday and Tuesday off after New Year’s too. Then she will be back to making those fabulous pies of hers and remember her Mom Katherine’s fabulous saying--”Pie fixes everything! Yum ***
CA LUMET CIT Y CHRISTM AS DECOR ATING CON TEST BR INGS OUT THE BEST: Some 60 houses, mobile homes and even a window in the Bernardin Manor made the cut to be considered for the “Most Beautiful Decorations” of the season. Pictured here is a mobile home in River Oaks Estates decorated on all sides and truly capturing the spirit of the season. N 2 N was invited to ride along with Calumet City staffers and judge the contest. This is not the 1st time N 2 N has done this. A few years ago we rode along and judged the decorations and it was a fun ride. This year was bit different and truly exciting. Inspectional Services’ Debbie Sellers and I rode the route in a Calumet City squad car driven by 10 year CCPD veteran Corey Bland. Corey took us to the highways and byways of Wards, 2, 3 and 4 and along the way we got to be in on a “call”--a multi car pile up at Stony Island Avenue and Dolton Road. Both Debbie and Corey called the accident in. Luckily, we were in the right place at the right time and ambulances were dispatched to take the injured to the hospital. “All in a day’s work,” Corey said casually. Asked how he liked being a police officer, Corey was enthusiastic! “I love it,” said the Dad of an almost 3 year old boy who is eagerly anticipating Christmas. Meanwhile, while in the back seat of the squad car (very uncomfortable too. No padding on the bare bench seat, bars all around, seat belts seldom used, and a small space for one’s feet under the front seat. “A good place to stay out of,” Debbie commented, we viewed 20 of the 60 homes under consideration. We marked our ballots and wished each other and Corey a very Merry Christmas. Will let you know who won the contest in upcoming N 2 N’s. In the meantime have a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year and Blessings to You and Yours!
LOCALS ATTEND THE SOUTHEAST SIDE VIETNAM VETERANS ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PARTY: The fabled Jovial Club in South Chicago was the setting of the annual event which found south suburbanites, traveling back to their early days South Chicago fave, the most popular Jovial Club.
