Now that 2015 is upon us, you may be thinking about making some New Year’s resolutions. Perhaps you’ll decide to take up a musica l instrument, or hit the gym more often, or even learn a new language. All these are worthy goals, of course — but you could also gain some key benefits by work i ng to ach ieve some financial resolutions. Here are a few to consider: • Fi l l “g a p s” i n y ou r i n v e s t m e nt p or t f o l i o. From time to time, you — or possibly your financial advisor, if you work with one — m ig ht ident i f y “gaps” in your investment portfolio. For example, you might find that you are making insufficient progress on a key goal, such as saving for a child’s college education. Or you might discover that you need to place additional resources in a particular a sset cla ss to ach ieve proper d iversi f icat ion, which can help reduce the impact of market volatility on your portfolio. (Keep i n m i nd, t houg h, t hat diversification, by itself, can’t g uarantee prof its or protect against loss.) So, put “filling portfolio gaps” high on your list of New Year’s financial resolutions. • B o o s t y o u r 4 01 ( k ) cont r ibut ion s. I f you r sa la r y has gone up w i t h t h e N e w Ye a r, consider boosting your c ont r ibut ion s to you r 401(k) or similar employers p on s or e d r e t i r e me nt plan. You may not be able to a f ford to contribute t he ma x i mu m a n nua l amount — which, in 2015, i s $18,0 0 0, or $ 24,0 0 0 if you’re 50 or older — but if you increase your contributions every year, you ca n g reat ly speed your progress toward your retirement savings goals. You can put this New Year’s resolution into effect by contacting your human r e s ou r c e s or b ene f it s department as soon as you get back to work in 2015. • Eliminate “unhealthy” i nve st ment habit s. A s

part of your general New Yea r’s resolut ions, you m a y h a v e de c ide d t o cut back on “carbs” and sugar-laced soft drinks, w it h t h e e x p e c t a t ion that these moves could help your overall health. But you can also make “u n he a lt hy ” f i n a nc ia l moves, such as chasing after “hot” stocks (which may already have cooled off by the time you find them) or selling quality investments just because their price has temporarily dropped. Strive to focus more intently on your longterm investment strategy, as opposed to reacting to short-term stimuli. • Re v ie w y ou r e s t a t e s t r a t e g y. D u r i n g a n y g iven yea r, you m ig ht experience major changes in your life — marriage (or remarriage), new child, new home, etc. — a nd these changes will have profound effects on your estate plans. But whether or not you encountered any of these events in 2014, it’s a good idea to look over your estate planning documents* — such as a will, living trust, power of attorney, and so forth — to make sure they are st i l l current w it h your w ishes. It’s especia lly i mpor ta nt to update beneficiary designations on your insurance policies and retirement accounts, so that they are aligned with the wishes you have expressed in your w ill. And if you haven’t drawn up you r est ate pla n s* yet, make a New Year’s resolut ion to do so i n 2015 — because it’s never too soon to take the steps necessary to protect your loved ones in the future. Unlike some New Year’s resolutions, these financial ones won’t require a big shift in your lifestyle. But if you can stick to them, they can make a big difference in your life. One of my favorite non-traditional Christmas passages of scripture is found in First Timothy 4:14. Here, Paul tells young Timothy, “Do not neglect the ‘gift’ that is in you.” The ‘gift’ Paul spoke of was the Holy Spirit that enabled Timothy to carry out the purposes of God for his life. Every year we celebrate the Christmas season in giv ing gifts to family and friends that we love and value. We spend considerable time in selecting gifts that we hope will bring pleasure and joy to the receiver. As a child I remember the gifts my grandmother received every year from my uncle. One year he bought her an electric carving knife. The next year an electric skillet, and the following years other kitchen appliances he thought would make life easier for her. But she was always saving them for special occasions. Grandma was like that about all of her gifts (clothes, jewelry, etc.) she deemed special. She died at age 89 having never used any of the things she was saving for a special occasion. Over 2000 years ago God gave the gift of eternal life to all who would put their

trust in His son Jesus. The gift includes adoption into God’s family, an abundant life here on earth and everlasting life (life without end) with God. Yet many neglect to receive and utilize God’s gift. They say things like, “I need to get right first,” or, “I’m not ready to give up my life yet,” or, “I’m too young, I’ll wait till I get older,” never realizing that they may not live to see the ‘occasion’ they speak of. Like Timothy, Christians neglect the gift of the Holy Spirit when they fail to rely on Him to accomplish God’s purpose for their life. It is the Holy Spirit that enables us to live out the gospel message; to love people who are unlovable; to forgive as God has forgiven us; to live a life of freedom in Christ instead of being tangled up and bound by the cares of the world. Jesse White Warns Businesses of Statewide Corporate Solicitation A firm called Annual Business Services is contacting Illinois businesses in an attempt to collect a $125 fee to fill out a corporation’s “corporate minutes.” The fake notice states that the fee must be paid by January 9, 2015. White recommends that corporations do not reply to the solicitation. The Illinois Business Corporation Act does not require corporations to file an “Annual Minutes Form” or pay such a fee with the state or any private entity. The only fee that corporations must pay is the fee that is paid with their annual report. Illinois corporations should be on the alert for this

and similar attempts to collect fictitious fees. “The problem is t hat t he for m t his bogus firm is sending out looks similar to our Secreta r y of State’s a nnua l repor t form,” White said. “We are concerned that companies may be f iling t he form and paying the $125 because they believe they are filing their annual report with us, as required by law.” If a business would like to file a complaint in regard to the solicitation, please contact the Illinois Attorney General’s Consumer Fraud Division at (800) 243-0618.

T he y got let ter s f rom t hei r Med ica re Pa r t D insurance company that each of them owed almost $140. They came to me because I work at t he i nsu ra nce agenc y t hat helped them select and purchase their Medicare Part D prescription drug policies. In our phone call to the insurance company about these letters, we were on hold for over an hour. The clients and I talked while we waited to speak with a representative. W hen we did get to speak to a representative, she apologized for the long wait. We asked about the letters that claimed our clients owed money. “How ca n t hey owe m on e y t o y ou r f i r m ? T he pr em iu m for t he Medicare Part D policy is deducted from their Social Security checks and sent to your firm from Social Security?” I asked. T h e r e pr e s e nt a t i v e checked a nd ad m it ted that a mistake had been made. I asked to speak to a supervisor. When one a nswered t he phone, I explained that I was not compla ining about t he employee who answered t h e p h on e . S h e w a s ver y n ice. But, I wa s compla ining about t he long w a it so spea k to someone on ly to lea r n about t he mista ke made by t he insurance company. The supervisor apologized and told me t hat t here had been a “glitch” in the company’s

computer system which sent thousands of such letters by mistake. That morning, t he customer service department at the insurance company had over 2,000 phone ca l ls on hold and waiting to ask about the same kind of letter that was sent by mistake. The result of t his is t h at ou r c l ient s f r om Lowell were much happier when they left than when they came to our office. I explained to them that no one in this insurance agency can control other people or f i r ms a nd t he m i st a ke s t hat a re sometimes made. But, the people at this insurance a genc y rea l l y do c a re about our senior citizen clients. We “go the extra m i le” to protec t t hem from financial harm when someone makes a mistake about their insurance. In this case, I spent almost two hours with this couple to check on a problem that neither they nor our insurance agency caused. Does you r i nsu ra nce a genc y g ive t h i s h ig h standard of service to its senior citizen clients? If not, why not? Ma ny times these surface as a result of mistakes made in the past 12 months. However, when it comes to rea l estate, resolutions don’t necessa r i ly apply as it is unlikely that you do a rea l estate t ra nsact ion every year. Furthermore, you c a n’t ac t ua l l y R E SOLV E to bu y you r neighbor’s house, or to sell your $100,000 home for $300,000. Well, you could, but you’d probably be setting yourself up for disappointment right from the start. Some things are simply out of a would-be seller’s control. But as a would-be seller, you can le a r n f r om a nd m a ke RESOLUTIONS based on t hose sel lers who have gone before you. Example, I am sure right now there are current sellers who are resolved to take the next buyer that makes an offer under their asking price a little bit more seriously. If you plan to sell your home in the near future, here are some helpful resolutions that your might consider… RESLOVE to think of your home as a product. Start cleaning out old stuff now. If there are things deep in your closets that you don’t think you’ll use between January and the time you intend to move, consider a storage locker or making space in the garage. Does you r rea l est ate agent suggest that the basement needs a paint job? Get

some painting bids now. Have you a lways hated how the bathroom vanity takes up so much space? Consider changing it now so buyers w ill perceive your bathroom as bigger. This will also help you to spread out t he costs of home repairs and changes ov er t he ne x t s e v er a l mont h s. R ESL OV E to understand your timing and exit strategy. One of the biggest stresses on a seller is trying to plan a purchase a nd a sa le at the same time. Can you afford to close on the new home before selling? If so, for how long ? Do y ou n e e d t o s e l l t h e property first? If so, will the potential sale price support a home purchase in the neighborhood that you want to be in? If not, what other areas should you be looking in? Selling and buying at the same time brings up all kinds of financial, emotional and physical stress.
