The Tony Awards, given for excellence in live Broadway theater, have announced that Erica Heilmann, a local theater teacher, has been recognized as one of only 20 teachers in the United States to receive Honorable Mention for the Excellence in Theater Education Award. The Award, sponsored by The Tony Awards and Carnegie Mellon University, recognizes a K-12 theater educator in the U.S. who has demonstrated monumental impact on the lives of students and who embodies the highest standards of the profession. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are so many wonderful teachers out there, including those who taught me, so to be even considered for this award was very special,â&#x20AC;? said Heilmann, theater teacher at Thornton Fractional South High School in Lansing. She was the only teacher in Illinois to win this distinction. Heilmannâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s plate is full when it comes to theater, directing the award-winning Oak Lawn Park District Teen theater program, the Broadway Jr. theater program, multiple shows in the adult theater program, and having taught theater at T.F. South High School since 1998. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Erica was my first theater teacher when I was 7 and has literally changed my life,â&#x20AC;? said Reagan Pender, a theater major at Ball State who was recently directed by Broadway star Sutton Foster. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Erica is an incredible asset to T.F. Flooded basement at Davros home

The rain was coming down hard on Tuesday February 28, however Jim Davros wasn’t especially worried. He had lived in his Dolton house over 30 years and his finished recreation room had never flooded. This night would be different—very different. On Tuesday night Jim and his family would experience a flood of biblical proportions. The rain began early in the day and by 8pm there was standing water in the street in Jim’s neighborhood on East 156th St. in Dolton. The flood zone behind his sub-division goes from 156th & Clyde east to 156th St and west to the Calumet Expressway. Flooding regularly occurs on 158th & Greenwood just to the North of the area. When he went to check on his basement the water was rushing through his above ground windows. His 2 sump pumps were running non-stop but were slowly losing the battle against the rising water. Jim’s neighbor, Dolton Police Officer Michael Moore, helped out his neighbor over several days and provided 12 sandbags and a shop-vac. Those tools were useless against the deluge of water. The rain water rose to cover the floor to a depth of 6-8 inches. Carpeting, drywall, furniture and family heirlooms were

ruined. Chris Oster, owner of Torrance Liquors, was made aware of the flooding, and he brought over 14 fiberglass skids to elevate the furniture and other valuables from the flood water. Jim took time out from baling water to remind his wife that they had faithfully paid their flood insurance premiums at American Family Insurance for many years. Mr. Neal Massucci owner of the local agency, said not to worry, that they were covered. After many phone calls to NFIP the bad news came. NFIP informed Mr. Massucci and Mr. Davros that the home was not fully covered for flooding. Mr. Massucci called and contacted the national organization regarding coverage many times to no avail. Little did the Davros family realize but their flood insurance company— the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP—would fight them when it came time to pay their claim. Homeowner Jim Davros has years of experience in the waterproofing business that includes inspecting new construction at the Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport, the University of Minnesota, and the waterproofing of the Mormon Temple in Nauvoo, IL. He even owned his own roofing and waterproofing company for over 50 years. He has

_______________________________ years of experience in the construction business, and when Jim sees a flood, he knows what he is talking about. His basement flooded that night, but the insurance company doesn’t see it that way. There is a lot of fine print on any insurance policy and the NFIP is no different. To repair the damage caused by this flood including foundation, waterproofing, and interior decorating was just under $20,000. The NFIP offered Davros a fraction of that estimate to repair and refinish his basement. Jim said, “We paid our premiums without fail, but now when we need the insurance company to help us out, they kicked us to the curb! They didn’t have any problem cashing our premium checks but when it comes time for them to write a check for flood damage it’s a different story.” During a long waiting period, Davros had to instruct an inept insurance adjuster and engineer regarding flooding as well as having his letters and phone calls ignored. The NFIP even had the audacity to send a renewal policy! The moral of the story is when buying flood insurance to protect your home, be very wary and careful when buying from the National Flood Insurance Program.

Sheep Before the Slaughter ANNA M. CAISON “Sheep before the slaughter” is the thought that came to mind as I read the report about a 30-year-old pregnant mother of 4, killed by 2 officers responding to her call regarding a burglary that occurred in her Seattle apartment. Tears brimmed my eyes as I cried out to the LORD. “We’re nothing but sheep led to the slaughter!” I thought about Philando Castile. He did everything he was supposed to do when pulled over for a minor traffic stop. Five of seven bullets were fired into his body in front of his girlfriend and her 4-year-old daughter, killing him instantly. I then thought about my son and became fearful for him, my sons-in law, my siblings’ sons, and our grandsons. For a moment, I became afraid to leave the house to go to the store as images of me being pulled over and tasered, flashed before my eyes. The testimony of Black legislators, doctors, and police officers (when out of uniform) saying they too are periodically pulled over and asked to show their ID played through my mind. “Does every Black person in America have a target on their back? What are we supposed to do? the LORD from Israel during her exile. They too saw themselves as “sheep before the slaughter (v. 22),” crying out to God to deliver them from the hatred and abuse of their enemies. The Apostle Paul quotes the same verse in his “More than a Conqueror” message in Romans 8:35-39. God had not then, nor has He now turned His back on His people. He still loves us. I don’t know why God delivers some, but not others from wrongful death and incarceration. But in all these things, the child of God is more than a conqueror. Just as the wrongful death of Jesus, redeemed us from eternal separation from God and His ultimate plan for us; our wrongful death or the wrongful death of a loved one (whether the loved one is a Christian or not) becomes a catalyst for exposing injustice and stirring up righteous indignation that brings about positive changes in our laws. As unsettling and stressful as our lives have become we can find the courage and peace of mind to pursue and enjoy life if we keep our focus on the Lord. Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: My spouse and I purchased a home without having a home inspection. This was the worse mistake we ever made. We saw the house via the Internet, and only did a quick walk-through on the day of the closing. The broker was supposed to pick us up for the walk-thru at 2 PM, when it was light out. Instead, he picked us up at 4:45 PM and we arrived at the home when the sun was almost down. We had to be at the closing at 6PM. There were no lights in the bedrooms, as this is how the home was built. There were plumbing problems, it was evident in the light of day that the seller had made cosmetic improvements. After the fact, we had a home inspection, and many problems were found. A home is a major purchase, and a buyer should be protected from having a dream turn into a nightmare. Answer: I can’t imagine that this situation would have arisen if you had a buyer broker or an attorney. The purchase of a home is a substantial matter and if the seller’s broker cannot keep a crucial appointment then the owners will have to make adjustments, not you. Given that the time for the pre-settlement walk-through was inadequate and that the original appointment was not made, why

did you not postpone closing? Why did you not have money set aside in an escrow account for potential repairs? In general, it makes sense to make a photographic record of the property at the time you make an offer so that the condition of the property can be proven. Always have plenty of time set aside for a pre-settlement walk-through, as you did with the 2 PM appointment. You have a right to obtain the property at closing in substantially the same condition in which it existed as of the day your offer was made. If the lights are out, the utilities are shut off and it’s dark out then you have no way to reasonably determine the property’s condition or operate appliances. Purdue University Surplus Program Sells to the Public The Purdue University Surplus program reduces landfill and generates revenue through the sale, recycling and distribution of the University’s surplus assets. In addition to selling items declared surplus by various university departments in their on-campus retail store, open to the public weekdays from 12pm to 4pm, the University also utilizes online auctions to help generate more revenue and reduce waste. Purdue University began selling items online in July of 2011 on the government auction website GovDeals.com. The program started small, selling items like laptop charging cabinets and miscellaneous equipment with opening bids as low as $25. By the end of the year, the university’s surplus online auction sales earned more than $78,000. Over the past six years, the university surplus program has sold over $1M worth of surplus assets on GovDeals.com. Everything Purdue Surplus sells are items that are no longer of use to any department within the university. Once sales are final, a portion of the proceeds are used to help fund the surplus program with the remaining proceeds returning to the using department. Mark Schock, Manager of Materials Management for the university states, “GovDeals’ auctions have allowed Purdue Surplus to expand its customer base and maximize profits back to the university. GovDeals always does a great job of marketing specialty items and reaching specific markets. BRANDI SMITS The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas Starr is two different people when she needs to be. Sometimes she’s Garden Heights Starr, the daughter of convenience store owner Mav Carter who lives surrounded by gangs and drug dealer. Other times she’s Williamson Starr, one of the handful of black students at the prestigious Williamson school located 45 minutes from her neighborhood which she attends with her white boyfriend Chris. Starr feels a part of both worlds, but also disconnected at times. Her favorite show is Fresh Prince of BelAir. She tells Chris that she feels like she is Will Smith’s character when she’s at Williamson. She’s a stranger in a different place striving to still be herself. One night Starr goes to a party in Garden Heights with her friend Kenya. While Kenya was dealing with some serious boy drama, Starr runs into her old friend Khalil. While they are talking, gunshots ring out. The two quickly leave the party to get away from whatever dangerous situation erupted at that party. While driving in Khalil’s car, they get pulled over. The officer approaches the car. After a short exchange, the officer tells Khalil that he has a taillight out and to get out of the car. The officer

goes back to his car. Khalil leans down to the window to ask Starr if she’s ok, and the worst thing Starr could ever imagine happens right in front of her. The officer fires multiple shots at Khalil, killing him. Starr knows that Khalil did nothing wrong and didn’t deserve to die. Unfortunately the media is saying otherwise. They are painting Khalil as a drug dealing thug. Starr knows the truth, but is afraid to tell anyone aside from her family that she was there. She’s known in the media only as “the witness.” Protests fill her neighborhood, turning it into a place of chaos where tanks drive down the streets and looters destroy businesses. All Starr wants is justice for her friend, but she learns that sometimes the truth can be blurred and what’s right is lost in the noise. The Hate U Give is an important book, to say the least. It’s also deeply engaging. Starr Carter is one of the truest characters I’ve ever had the pleasure to meet. I can give you the summary of the plot, but it would never be enough. Two Area Schools Receive Math and Science Partnership Program Grants The Indiana Department of Education announced School City of Hammond and Hammond Academy of Science and Technology are on a list of schools chosen to receive 2017-18 Math and Science Partnership (MSP) Program Grants. Recipients of the grants have displayed a focus on classroom integration of math and science instruction, with an additional focus on relevant Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) within grades K-12.
