For Fathers Raising Children with Special Needs: Audiobooks Share Stories that Offer Inspiration and Hope BARRINGTON, IL, Oct. 2, 2023 — In 2017, the 21st Century Dads Foundation launched the Special Fathers Network (SFN), a dad to dad mentoring program for fathers raising children with special needs. SFN matches new fathers with Mentor Fathers from similar backgrounds who have faced similar challenges. “SFN Mentor Fathers share their experiences with younger dads closer to the beginning of their journey raising a child with the same or similar special needs,” explained David Hirsch, founder of the 21st Century Dads Foundation. “The SFN Mentor Fathers do not offer legal or medical advice; that is what lawyers and doctors do. They simply share their experiences and how they have made the most of challenging situations.” Among the SFN’s other resources for fathers are the SFN Dad to Dad Podcast and audiobooks featuring collections of inspirational stories drawn from the podcasts and grouped by subject matter. Cerebral Palsy Stories: From the Special Fathers Network Dad to Dad Podcasts is the fourth in the series and is a compilation of 12 stories told from the perspectives of fathers raising children with cerebral Palsy. Each of the 12 chapters includes a heartfelt story by a father who has also agreed to serve as an SFN Mentor Father, including Mark Miller, an executive with Chick-Fil-A who also provides the foreword. The fifth and newest audiobook in the series, On Losing A Child: From the Special Fathers Network Dad to Dad Podcasts, features emotional accounts from 12 fathers who have lost a child. Kim “Rooster” Rossiter, founder of Ainsley’s Angels, provides the foreword.

“We encourage every father of a special needs child to become a Mentor Father for the opportunity to provide hope, inspiration and courage to those newly touched by the news of having a special needs child,” Hirsch added. About the Author David Hirsch is one of the country’s most outspoken advocates for father involvement. He is the founder of Illinois Fatherhood Initiative, the country’s first state-wide nonprofit fatherhood organization, as well as the 21st Century Dads Foundation. His TEDx Talk, “Why We Need to Break the Cycle of Father Absence,” has been viewed more than 34,000 times. He is also the host of the SFN Dad to Dad Podcast and the author of six books, including 21st Century Dads: A Father’s Journey to Break the Cycle of Father Absence, and five compilations from the SFN Dad to Dad Podcasts. A wealth manager with 39 years of experience, he earned his MBA from Northwestern University’s J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management and a Bachelor of Science degree in Accountancy from the University of Illinois. He was also a Kellogg National Fellow with the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, one of the country’s most well recognized interdisciplinary leadership programs. He and his wife, Peggy, have been married for 40 years and are the proud parents of five adult children as well as two grandchildren. They live in Barrington Hills. His interests include reading, underwater photography, fishing and endurance sports. For more information, please visit https://21stcenturydads.org/.

Giannoulias Recommends Increasing Requirement for Drive Tests from 75 to 79 Study shows senior drivers among the safest in the state. Illinois would continue to have the strictest driving renewal laws in the nation. Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias released a report today that recommends adjusting the age requirement for mandatory driving tests from 75 to 79, making Illinois more consistent with other states. For the past dozen years, Illinois has been the only state in the nation that requires senior drivers to have their behind-the-wheel skills tested on a regular basis. The last two states that mandated driving tests for seniors did away with them in 2011 (New Hampshire) and 2005 (Indiana). “As Secretary of State, road safety is a top priority of mine,” Giannoulias said. “Statistics show that seniors are among the safest drivers of any age category. This change would make Illinois driving standards for senior drivers more consistent compared to other states while keeping Illinois as one of the strictest states for license renewals.” Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) statistics in 2022 included a full year of data relating to the emergency rule that raised the age to 79. IDOT reported virtually no change in crash rates for drivers 75 and older, with a crash rate of 24.39 per 1,000 drivers, which is lower than every age range of drivers between 16 and 69 years old. “AARP applauds Secretary Giannoulias’ recommendation to permanently reduce the number of older drivers subject to agebased license renewals,” said Ryan Gruenenfelder, Senior Manager of Outreach and Advocacy for AARP Illinois. “Though AARP maintains age alone is not determinative of driving performance, this is a step in the right direction. We look forward to continuing to work with Secretary Giannoulias to identify policy solutions that assess all drivers’ ability to be safe on the road.” During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Illinois General Assembly passed a measure modifying driver requirements in response to

the unprecedented public health crisis. The act temporarily raised the age of driving tests from 75 to 79 and was scheduled to expire on January 1, 2023. Lawmakers extended the act to October 1, 2023, and requested the Secretary of State’s office recommend whether the age increase should be made permanent. There are more than 9.1 million licensed drivers in Illinois. Of those, approximately 280,000 individuals are between the ages of 75 and 78, or 3% of the driving population – who would be impacted by the permanent implementation of this legislation. In neighboring Wisconsin, where there are no requirements specifically geared toward older drivers, all drivers are required to renew their licenses every eight years and are not required to take a driving test, regardless of age. Crash rates among senior drivers there are nearly identical to those in Illinois. The act regarding the change only pertained to drivers 75 to 78 required to take the driving tests. Current Illinois law would remain unchanged when it comes to renewing drivers for other age groups: • All drivers below the age of 81 must renew their licenses every four years. • Drivers aged 79 and 80 must take a vision and driving test (if their four-year renewal is up during this time period). • Drivers aged 81 to 86 must take a vision and driving test every two years. • Drivers aged 87 and older must take a vision and driving test every year. Giannoulias is urging the state to adopt the rules immediately so seniors would not have to take driving tests after the October 1 deadline and before the requirements are made permanent. He added that the Secretary of State’s office will continue to monitor state driving laws and advocate for changes as long as our roadways remain safe and Illinois drivers, pedestrians and cyclists are protected.

Financial Advice Column

What should you ask a financial advisor?

by Janice R Newman We need more compassion in our lives! The virtue of compassion appears to be Missing In Action in today’s society. We are constantly busy, running the rat race, and trying to make ends meet that society is focused on the “I”, “ME”, and “MYSELF” that we don’t notice the “US”, “WE”, or “THEY”. Many of us have lost compassion for others as the world and most of society puts the emphasis on the I. Compassion is having sympathy and concern for others who might be suffering or in need. We have emotional connection and feelings for others in need through our level of compassion for others that causes us to act to relieve that suffering. However, with our constantly busy lives, we appear to be missing or unaware of others around us in need. Or are we aware but choose to ignore it because we don’t have time or want to care? Jesus taught the parable of the Samaritan helping a wounded man in Luke 10:29-37 (NIV) on exhibiting great compassion and love for others. In the parable, a man was robbed, beaten, and left for dead on the road. Three people walk by the man including the first two a priest and a Levite, also in the priesthood. These men cross the road to avoid the wounded man. They purposefully chose to ignore the man and lacked compassion or concern. The third man was a Samaritan, whose people were despised at the time. The Samaritan chose to help the man by bandaging his wounds, taking him to an inn so he could recover, and paying the cost with no expectation of being paid back. He helped a stranger in need out of his compassion for others. People are called to have compassion and love for others no matter what religion, culture, race, or social affiliation of people who are different from us. We are called by God to love others and compassion plays a role. Jesus talks

about the greatest commandments in Matthew 22:37-39 (NIV) “Jesus replied: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself’”. Which of the three men had neighborly love for the wounded man? Last week, leaving my house rushing for an appointment in heavy pouring rain, an elderly lady in a wheelchair was waving her arm at the passing cars. When I drove passed, I heard her say “Help!”. My thoughts were I was going to be late if I stopped, what type of help she needed, if I could help, if it was a rouse, etc. Then God popped into my head the parable of the Samaritan and to turn around to help. My husband and I asked how she needed help. The lady was in a panic that the sidewalk was covered with water, possibly mud that her wheelchair would get stuck or fall over. All she needed and was praying to God for help for someone to guide her through the high puddle to calm her fear. She didn’t need help to push just to navigate her safely. We easily helped her, and she was on her way in a minute. I don’t know how long she was crying out and waving for help, but she was on a welltraveled street and right next to a busy church/ school parking lot exit, and no one stopped. Learn to increase your compassion for others by • Putting yourself in other’s shoes. • Practicing kindness. • Withholding judgment. • Slow down and being aware of others. • Following Jesus’ example of caring for others. • Obeying God’s command to love others. Demonstrate compassion for others because you want others to have compassion for you if you are in need. Y? Why Not! www.ywhynot.com

SUBMITTED BY PATRICK ZAMKIN Managing your finances and investing for your future are important tasks — and they can be challenging. But you don’t have to go it alone. Many people benefit from working with a financial advisor, someone who knows their needs and goals and makes appropriate recommendations. If you’re considering getting some help, you’ll want to ensure a particular financial advisor is right for you, so it’s a good idea to ask questions. Here are some to consider: • Have you worked with people like me? All of us are unique individuals. Yet, you do share certain characteristics with others — age, income, family situation and so on. And you might feel comfortable knowing that a financial advisor has worked with people like you and can readily understand and appreciate your needs and specific goals: college for your children, a certain type of retirement lifestyle, the kind of legacy you’d like to leave and others. The more information you can provide about yourself upfront, the better your chances of finding a good match. • Do you have a particular investment philosophy? Some financial advisors follow a particular investment style, while others might focus on specific investments or categories. There’s nothing inherently wrong with these types of approaches, but you might be better served by working with someone who takes a broader view — one that emphasizes helping clients meet their goals over any particular philosophy or strategy. • How will you communicate with me? Open and frequent communication are key to a successful relationship with a financial advisor. So, you’ll want to know what you can expect. Will you have annual or semiannual reviews of your accounts? In between these reviews, can you contact your advisor at any time with questions you may have? How

will an advisor notify you to recommend investment moves? Is the financial advisor the individual you’ll communicate with, or are other people involved? • How do you define success for your clients? Some investors track their portfolios’ performance against that of a specific market index, such as the S&P 500. But these types of benchmarks can be misleading. For one thing, investors should strive for a diversified portfolio of stocks, bonds and other investments, whereas the S&P 500 only tracks the largest U.S. stocks. So, when you talk to potential financial advisors about how they define success for their clients, you may want to look for responses that go beyond numbers and encompass statements such as these: “I’m successful if my clients trust me to do the right things for them. And, most important, I’m successful when I know I’ve helped my clients reach all their goals.” • How are you compensated? Financial advisors are compensated in different ways — some work on commissions, some charge fees, and some combine fees and commissions. There isn’t necessarily any best method, from a client’s point of view, but you should clearly understand how a potential advisor is compensated before you begin a professional relationship. These aren’t the only questions you might ask a potential financial advisor, but they should give you a good start. When you’re trusting someone to help you with your important financial goals, you want to be completely comfortable with that individual — so ask whatever is on your mind. Heart Smart JOSH BOOTSMA Who are you? Easy question, right? You’re James, or Jasmine, or whatever your name is. But is that your identity? Is your whole personhood wrapped up only in the name on your birth certificate? Of course not. Maybe you can trace your lineage back centuries to Senegal or Spain. And that’s certainly an important part of you, but it doesn’t fully explain who you are today as you read this. Your vocation and work are very much linked to you as a person, but does it define your identity? Aren’t you more than what you do every day? Some people talk about gender identity and sexual orientation in terms that imply those things constitute who we are. But your sexuality is simply a way to describe the type of person you’re attracted to. And your gender describes the way you think about yourself and those around you. Neither of them capture the root of your identity. Your family is closer to the mark. Because if, God forbid, your family were taken from you, a huge part of your identity would be taken as well. But not all of it. The answer to who you are is not wrapped up in anything on this earth. It’s founded entirely upon God. The God who created you has linked your identity inseparably to Himself. Being God’s child, saved by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, is the only thing that remains after we’ve peeled away the layers of who we are. Your relationship with your Savior is the only solid rock that your identity can stand upon. There are only two answers, then, to the question “who are you?” The first is “I’m a child of the world” and the second is, “I’m a child of God.” What’s your answer? SOUTH HOLLAND COMMUNITY CENTER OBSERVES BREASK CANCER AWARENESS: The main lobby of the South Holland Community Center is ablaze with variations of pink balloons to raise awareness of breast cancer. The display is up all week and recalls fundraisers that support the irradication of this dread disease. ***

In July 2022, the cost of both printing and mailing greatly increased. Instead of passing this cost along to our long-time dedicated advertisers, we made the tough choice to eliminate our free mailing sevices to keep The Shopper alive. As of July 2022 we no longer be mailing to homes. If you would like to continue to receive a paper in the mail the cost will be $20 a month. Our new distribution plan has increased the availability of the newspaper as well as expanded the area we serve with added locations below. Thanks for sticking with us , we love our readers and communities! Thank you -

TAKIJNG A STROLL AROUND HIGHLAND: With this beautiful fall weather blessing our towns, Jim and Debbie Robson decided to take 11-year-old Mia and 12-year-old Patches for a walk. Speaking Of Seniors

Happy Endings

A $4,233 Question WOODROW WILCOX

MIKE BUDER It’s not the offer starting price that matters; it’s the ending price! Some home negotiations are a sprint, others are a marathon. Some offers start close to list price, others are what is commonly called “low ball”. As participants in this home buying and selling dance, there’s probably as many different strategies as there are homes on the market. Can you keep it rational, or do you get spun up and let emotional reaction get in the way of selling your home? Part of a Realtor’s job is keeping everyone on an even keel, to continue negotiations to the point one side or the other decides not to proceed.... but that discontinuation should be because we couldn’t achieve that meeting of the minds on terms, NOT because one side is furious with the other! And a common source of emotional fuel often is the initial offer price, that supposed “low ball” price. Now here are 3 things to consider as a home seller: 1. They like your home enough to write an offer! 2. They like your home enough to write an offer! and 3. They like

your home enough to write an offer! Get the point? There are other homes on the market and they chose yours to try to buy! Don’t worry about their starting price; we only care about getting them to an acceptable end price! That acceptable end price can happen in one move or a few small bumps! Let them dicker around; another offer just may come in that trumps their gamesmanship! That’s how buyers become educated fast! It’s critical that we don’t burn any bridges during the negotiations, so they feel comfortable coming back. So, remember, not every offer will succeed. Try to keep the end point in mind with every offer. Don’t reject outright, counter on your terms. Keep communication open. Keep it civil. Keep the bridge open and unburned! It’s not the starting line that matters; it’s the FINISH LINE! Mike Buder A local Christian Businessman RE/MAX 10 (708) 418-4444

Our agent Sam Ulayyet brought me some papers to examine on September 27, 2023. The papers were about billing charges to a client who lives at Lakes of the Four Seasons in Crown Point, Indiana. I reviewed the papers and wrote a letter to the medical firm’s billing office. With some editing to protect the privacy of our client and others, here is my letter to the medical firm. Our client gave me some papers about a bill and charges by your firm to her. She asked us to review the papers. I found something that seemed strange. Your firm charged her credit card twice on 01/05/2022. The first time was at 8:33 AM for $4,000. The second time was at 8:41 AM for $233. But in the Medicare Summary Notice forms from Medicare that she gave me, I could find no services from your firm that correlated with such charges. It seemed like your firm charged $4233 on a date when no medical services were rendered. It might be that the patient did not deliver

all the paperwork to me. Please, help me to understand what medical services were rendered to connect with the charges on 01/05/2022 for $4,233. Send your response to our client. She will then share it with me. All the help that I am giving this client is FREE OF CHARGE. This insurance agency always helps our clients with medical billing problems without charging anything. It is our way to demonstrate to our clients that we really care about them. If your insurance agent or agency does not give this high level of customer service, why not switch to use our agency? Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over three million dollars by fighting mistakes or fraud in the Medicare system. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which is available through book stores or online.

Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: We are going to sell our home. We have a dog and cat. What suggestions do you have for showings? Answer: Your pets are members of your family, and you love them as such, but when it is time to sell your home, they can create a bit of a challenge in a few key ways. You are not alone if you are trying to sell a home and you have pets. Around 60% of sellers have them, with 61% being dogs and 33% being cats. However, buyers either want to visualize their own pets in the home or, depending on their preferences, no pets at all. Pets can also create messes and odors that can turn buyers off. It is important when your house is on the market that you keep it incredibly clean, especially if you have pets. You want to make sure you get to the root cause of any odors as well. If you have rugs or carpets, you might need to have them professionally cleaned or even replaced to eliminate pet odors. Same with furniture. Vacuum your home every day. You must be conscious of not just odors and cleanliness when you have pets, but there may be people who come into your home with pet allergies. Pets can be destructive, and you may overlook some of this damage because you are used to it, but buyers will not. Go

through your home with fresh eyes and look for any pet damage that needs to be repaired, like scratched or torn furniture or flooring, chew marks on baseboard or window sills or ripped curtains. Check for any damage outside of your house too. Remember, not everyone loves pets as much as you do. If possible, put your pets elsewhere during showings. If your pets do have to stay at home, come up with a solution with your real estate agent. Do not have buyers be surprised by your pets. For example, maybe you can put them in the basement and leave a few notes if necessary. Tell people in your note they should not try to pet your dog or cat, even if they are friendly. Finally, talk to your real estate agent about giving you plenty of notice before a showing so you can arrange care for your animals whenever possible. Sims announces community revitalization funding State Senator Elgie R. Sims, Jr. announced that a combined total of $1.6 million is coming to local communities to support revitalization efforts. “Investing in affordable housing uplifts our community and boosts our local economy,” said Sims (D-Chicago). “We are taking strong strides toward revitalization and attracting investments in the communities that need it most. All Illinoisans deserve sustainable, livable housing options.” The Illinois Housing Development Authority recently approved $19 million to support affordable housing and community revitalization efforts across Illinois. Awarded under the Strong Communities Program, the initiative will provide funding to 68 units of local governments and land bank authorities for the acquisition, maintenance, rehabilitation and demolition of abandoned residential properties in their communities. The program is designed to support local revitalization efforts and attract further investment in communities that may lack the resources needed to tackle vacant, abandoned and deteriorated properties. The second round of Strong Communities Program awardees include: · Cook County Land Bank Authority: $562,000 · South Suburban Land Bank and Development: $562,000 · Village of Hopkins Park: $195,000 · Sauk Village: $337,000 “Vacant and abandoned properties continue to be a strain on local budgets and resources in communities throughout Illinois, which is why IHDA created the Strong Communities Program to assist local governments with their neighborhood revitalization efforts,” said IHDA Executive Director Kristin Faust. “Through the Strong Communities Program, IHDA seeks to help communities transform these properties back into positive, revenue-generating assets for neighborhoods.” The grants are funded by the Rebuild Illinois capital plan and will leverage IHDA’s existing funding to increase property values, create jobs, help reduce crime, generate additional tax revenue and attract further community investment in underserved communities around the state. A total of $30 million in grant funding has been awarded through two application rounds.

“Portals” Exhibition by Tommy Zarlengo Coming to SSC’s Photo Four Gallery The Art & Design Department at South Suburban College is pleased to announce a guest artist exhibition titled “Portals” by artist Tommy Zarlengo. This captivating collection of paintings will be showcased in the renowned Photo Four Gallery at the main campus in South Holland from October 13 to November 17, 2023. The public is cordially invited to join the artist for an engaging Artist Talk on November 1, 2023, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., offering a unique glimpse into the inspiration behind this extraordinary showcase. Tommy Zarlengo states, “I extract magic from the mundane, transforming everyday experiences into art. My life’s journey has led me to open many doors, each revealing a different facet of my creativity. Throughout these diverse endeavors, a common thread has woven them together: a deep love for art, an insatiable drive to create, and unending curiosity. “The series, “Portals,” holds a special place in my heart. These pieces have been my therapeutic companions, guiding me to focus on the present by immersing myself in painting and discovering the beauty within one of the simplest yet most powerful forms. Each canvas is a portal to a

moment, feeling, or world I have experienced, captured, and brought to life through my art. I invite you to enjoy this visual exploration, to find your connections, and to embrace the beauty that exists in the ordinary and extraordinary alike”, remarked Zarlengo. The SSC Photo Four Gallery, located on the fourth floor of South Suburban College, welcomes the public to attend “Portals.” The Photo Four Gallery’s operating hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Thursday, providing ample opportunities to experience this captivating exhibition. Please note that the gallery remains closed on weekends and holidays. The college extends a gracious invitation to the general public to enjoy the art exhibitions and receptions at no cost.
