Sheriff’s Office Hosts Carjacking Safety Booth at Chicago Auto Show The Cook County Sheriff’s Office will host a booth at the Chicago Auto Show to provide safety information about carjackings and increase awareness of tracking technology that can help recover stolen cars and prosecute offenders. Carjackings in Cook County, including Chicago, increased 38 percent in 2021 compared to 2020. Other metropolitan areas around the country have also reported an increase in this crime. “This is a terrifying and dangerous crime that enables additional crimes to be carried out with the stolen vehicle,” said Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart. “We need to work with the public, inform them of how to protect themselves and how important tracking information can be in these cases. We cannot give up trying to reduce this crime.” The public outreach is just the latest effort by Sheriff Dart to raise awareness about this issue and work toward long-term solutions. Sheriff’s Police are active members of a regional carjacking taskforce, and the Office has worked over the last year to gather and share data and intelligence among police agencies to help increase vehicle recovery and prosecutions.
The Office has also identified a key mechanism to address carjackings: quick and easy access to tracking information. Sheriff Dart engaged automakers in December and encouraged them to work with the Office to improve quick access to tracking information if a vehicle is stolen. Discussions are ongoing. Currently, each automaker has their own unique process to obtain tracking information and too often it is difficult for police or victims to navigate. It can sometimes take days or weeks to get the information, making it harder to catch the perpetrators and prevent the vehicle from being used in new crimes. The Office is asking for a single 24/7 hotline staffed by trained experts to legally access tracking information. Meanwhile, Sheriff Dart developed a consent-to-track form that owners can submit to the Sheriff’s Office to grant access to vehicle tracking information in the event it’s illegally taken. Having the completed form on hand will make it easier for law enforcement to access tracking information from manufactures quickly. The consent form is available on the Sheriff’s Office website.

Mrvan Black History Month Statement Today, Congressman Frank J. Mrvan released the following Black History Month statement, which was submitted into the Congressional Record of the U.S. House of Representatives. “Madam Speaker: It is with great respect and sincere admiration that I rise today to celebrate Black History Month and its 2022 theme – Black Health and Wellness. “This year’s theme recognizes the achievements and initiatives of African Americans in healthcare while simultaneously highlighting the disparities that still exist in our country. As we reflect on the past, we must examine how race and racism have created additional barriers for African American health outcomes. “Specific to Northwest Indiana, I would like to take a moment to recognize and commemorate the notable achievements of Dr. Clarence Boone, a well-known obstetrician-gynecologist and leader in our region’s medical community. “Dr. Boone was born and raised in Gary, Indiana. He graduated from Froebel High School in Gary in 1949 and went on to attend Indiana University - where he earned a degree in anatomy and physiology. He then made history as one of five Black students enrolled at the Indiana University School of Medicine in 1952. “After medical school, Dr. Boone returned to his hometown in Gary and spent his career advocating for African Americans and women in the medical field. He served as President of the
Medical Staff of Methodist Hospital and as Medical Director for Planned Parenthood of Northwest Indiana. Dr. Boone is remembered as a community mentor who was committed to providing medical service to individuals who would not otherwise have access to it. “While we have made progress to improve access to affordable health care options, there still is a long way to go. Generations of strict geographical segregation have left many hospitals and medical care centers that continue to serve African American communities under-resourced and under-staffed. “Evident prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, and certainly emphasized by it, these shortages have resulted in African Americans being more susceptible to illness, less likely to receive adequate treatment, and placed further at-risk for complications. “While I appreciate the milestones reached through the passage of the Affordable Care Act, more must be done to improve access to affordable health care and decrease the gap in healthrelated outcomes for African Americans. “With this year’s celebration of Black History Month, let us honor Dr. Boone from Gary and all African American scholars and medical professionals who have played such a monumental role with their contributions to health care in the state of Indiana and throughout our country, and let us recommit to ending health disparities for African Americans that still exist today.”
The Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra Presents Rach & Blue The Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra and conductor Kirk Muspratt present Rach & Blue, with two performances, Thursday, March 3, and Friday, March 4. Both concerts are at 7:30pm at Living Hope Church, 9000 Taft Street, Merrillville/ Crown Point. Pianist Wael Farouk will perform two piano masterworks: Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 and Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue. The concert will also feature lively classical pieces from Strauss and Enesco as well as contemporary works from Aaron Copland, James Horner, and John Williams. “Over the past 20 years, I have conducted hundreds of concerts with our Symphony, but I am not sure ever one quite as diverse as this one!” Maestro Muspratt said. “This crossover concert mixes classical and contemporary pieces that are excit-
ing, bold, and timely!” Tickets for the concert range from $35 -$75 each and students are $10. Concert season subscriptions are still available. Additionally, on Friday evening, the Symphony will celebrate its 20th anniversary season with Maestro Kirk Muspratt with a Pre-concert Party, from 4:30 – 6:45 pm at Gamba Ristorante, 455 E. 84th Dr., Merrillville. The party will feature heavy hos d’oeuvres, desserts, and an open bar. Tickets for the party are $125 for individuals, and tables of eight are available starting at $1000. Tickets for the concert are not included in the ticket price but can be purchased separately. For tickets or party reservations, call the Symphony office at (219) 836-0525 or visit the website at www.NISOrchestra.org.

As you prepare your tax returns before the April 18 filing deadline, you’ll want to be up to date on changes that could affect you. Here are some issues to discuss with your tax professional: COVID-19-related distributions and recontributions – If you took a coronavirusrelated distribution (withdrawal) from a retirement account, such as a 401(k) or IRA, in 2020 and chose to spread the amount equally over three years, you need to include the relevant part of the distribution on your 2021 tax return, so you should bring your 2020 Form 1099-R to your tax advisor. You can recontribute your distributions back into any retirement account eligible to receive a rollover for up to three years after you received the initial distribution. So, if you haven’t already done so, you can still recontribute to your 401(k) or IRA up until the April 18 filing deadline – and by doing so, you could reduce your 2021 taxes. (Your tax professional will know what forms and documentation you’ll need for this recontribution.) Return of RMDs – In 2020, the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act suspended the required minimum distributions (RMDs) from retirement accounts that people over a certain age typically must take. But RMDs returned for 2021 and had to be taken by Dec. 31, unless your birthdate is between July 1 and Dec. 31, 1949, in which case your starting date was delayed until April 1, 2022. So, if you had an RMD for 2021, bring your 2020 Form 5498 or your 2021 retirement account statements to your tax professional to calculate the required RMD. You’ll also want to provide your 2021 Form 1099-R to report the amount of RMDs taken. Charitable contributions – The CARES Act authorized a deduction for cash contributions to qualified charities for those who don’t itemize. For 2020, the maximum deduction was $300; this provision has been
extended for the 2021 tax year, with a new provision allowing a $600 deduction for joint filers. If you do itemize deductions, be aware that the CARES Act also suspended the 60% of adjusted gross income limit for cash gifts in 2020, a change that has been carried over to 2021. Child tax credit – For 2021, you can claim up to $3,600 for children younger than 6 and up to $3,000 for children ages 6 to 17. This tax credit is refundable, which means you can receive it even if it’s larger than the amount of taxes you owe. The credit phases out at certain income limits. Child and dependent care credit – This credit is more substantial in 2021 – up to $4,000 for one qualifying person and up to $8,000 for two or more. This credit is also potentially refundable, but it phases out differently than in previous years, so you’ll want to go over your dependent-care expenses carefully with your tax professional. And last, but certainly not least, review your IRA contributions. There aren’t any changes for 2022, but you can still fund your traditional or Roth IRA for the 2021 tax year up until the April 18 deadline. See your tax professional soon to ensure you’ve got everything in order. Staffing shortages at the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), combined with a heavy workload due to pandemic-related programs, may slow down processing of returns, so consider getting your taxes done as soon as possible – especially if you’re anticipating a refund. MIKE BUDER “Should I wait until the Spring market and warmer weather before I list my home for sale?” As a Realtor in the South suburbs of Chicago, I get asked this question all the time. My response is quite simple… “If you can list your home now, you really should.” And the reasons why are equally simple: 1. Low inventory 2. Continued demand. Our local market has become a year-round market. Sure, more people do move in Spring and Summer but traditional sellers have an opportunity to shine if they list their homes when there are mostly speculated, overpriced houses and distressed properties on the market. These very low inventories and news reports about escalating lending rates, have gotten buyers off the proverbial fence and into the Winter market. Homebuyers are searching for well maintained and well-priced homes to
hit the market. This is an opportunity few home sellers will take advantage of because they think people do not want to move in the Winter, and some people don’t want the inconvenience of showing their homes during snowy weather. But in my experience, the buyers looking at homes in the winter months are very serious about buying a home. Home buyers are tired of weaving through a slim inventory of bankowned properties that need work and have no disclosures. Most buyers prefer to buy from a traditional seller… and buyers worry that interest rates will edge up in the spring, reducing their affordability for purchasing a home. The plain truth is, in today’s market a wellprepared home seller most likely will not have to wait a long to see multiple offers. In the past few weeks, homes that I
have listed received multiple offers within one day of hitting the market. Pricing and preparation were key to getting quick offers. These are not flukes either. I have seen many well priced listings fly off the MLS in December and January. In past years, I have seen our inventory levels double from the month of February to May. So… “stop thinking like the average seller”, get your home on the market now and let it shine! RICHARD ZEKVELD Knowing your history helps me know you. Our personal, family, and cultural histories are part of who we are. They form us and the trajectory of our lives. That’s why I’ve always been interested in my own family and cultural history as well as those of others. Knowing your history helps me know you. That’s true of both individuals and people groups. I didn’t grow up around many people of African descent. When my family and I moved here fourteen years ago, my world began to include African Americans with a different cultural history than my own. This led me not only to ask a lot of questions, but to read about African American history. A few years ago, I discovered Isabel Wilkerson’s The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America’s Great Migration. I couldn’t put it down. Wilkerson traces the mass migration of black Americans from the American south to northern and Pacific states from about 1915-1970. She follows three individuals and their families and tells their stories against the broader historical backdrop of the Jim Crow south and the segregated north. She rounds out the big picture with countless anecdotes featuring other people. It’s worth the read. There is a history that supersedes my personal, family, and cultural history as well as yours. It is the history of God’s spiritual family, from Genesis to Revelation; the history of tho,se adopted into God’s family through faith in Christ from every tongue, tribe and nation. It is the history of our creation and fall in Adam and our redemption in Christ. This history includes, redeems, and uses the blessings and brokenness of our diverse personal, family, and cultural histories in the one grand history God is writing. It’s worth the read. Prayer to the Blessed Virgin
(Never known to fail.) Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in Eternal Glory. Thank you for your mercy toward me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days. After 3 days, the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. MTM

Real Estate Specialists
Real Estate Questions & Answers CATHY & JIM HIGGINS Question: We have been thinking of selling and have heard that it is a great market to sell and that buyers will be viewing our home all day long. Is this true? Answer: Yes, most likely that will be true. The good news in this market is that this will be short lived, because your home will more than likely sell within a few days. Then the showings will stop. This is opposite earlier markets where you would get a few showings per week, and it would last a month or two. The best way to get through the parade of people is to leave the home and let the agents show it using a lockbox. If you are concerned with the virus, we use covid protocol on all our listings, where the viewers use shoe covers, hand sanitizer and we limit the number of people who can come in at one time. We ask that they wear a mask, not enter if they are not feeling well and not use the bathroom. Not one of our clients, that we are aware of, has contracted covid. We can also arrange for showings only on certain days of the week and certain hours of the day if this helps you. Remember, there are a large number of buyers in a low inventory situation. This cre-
ates a huge demand for homes and definitely makes it a strong seller’s market. Buyers are waiting for new properties to come on the market and when they do, they want to see them right away. This is what is creating the home buying frenzy! Now is a great time to sell with home prices at all time highs. It is also a trying time to buy a home because of the low supply of available homes and the competition that it creates among buyers. E-mail us your Real Estate questions at Cathyah@aol.com. Celebrating “Fearless Fifteen” 15th Anniversary of Empowering Girls In Northwest Indiana Girls on the Run Northwest Indiana is celebrating a milestone anniversary! Fearless Fifteen - Celebrating 15 Years of Empowering Girls in the NWI is being celebrated all throughout 2022. This local non-profit began in 2007 with a team of fifteen girls at Merkley Elementary in Highland. From these humble beginnings, it has grown exponentially having served to date over 16,5000 girls across a ten-county service area. Girls on the Run is about so much more than running! It is a ten-week, after-school program that teaches research-based social-emotional lessons designed specifically for the challenges that 3rd-8th grade girls face. The program recognizes the important connection between body and mind and is centered around fun and accessible physical activity, ensuring we are strengthening physical - as well as emotional - health. Lessons are intentionally delivered in a safe and inclusive environment where girls can be themselves and make meaningful connections with teammates and mentors. One participant said, “Girls on the Run could make any girl fearless...when you are surrounded by people you trust, respect, and care for, nothing can hold you back from being the most beautiful version of yourself!” “One thing that sets us apart from other

Sims Moves Legislation To Protect Students And Teachers From Planned Attacks State Senator Elgie R. Sims, Jr. (D-Chicago) moved legislation to establish the Safe 2 Help Program, a hotline designed to receive reports from the public regarding potential self-harm or criminal acts directed at schools, students or school employees. “Our number one job is to protect our state’s most vulnerable populations,” said Sims. “This program was introduced to keep our children and schools safe while providing help to those who are battling mental illness.” Senate Bill 3936, an initiative of Illinois State Police, would require the agency to work collaboratively with the Illinois Department of Hu-

Speaking Of Seniors
Hospital Billing Incredibly Incompetent WOODROW WILCOX
On February 7, 2022, I helped a senior citizen client from Calumet Township file a complaint against a hospital in northwest Indiana with the Consumer Protection Division of the Indiana Attorney General’s office. On December 7, 2021, I sent a letter to the hospital telling them that they made a mistake on the billing to our client. I told them what they must do to correct their error to allow Medicare to approve the medical services so that Medicare and our client’s Medicare supplement policy could pay the bill. The hospital omitted certain codes needed to process the bill. The bill was over $1,788. Also, I sent the letter to two addresses of the hospital – the main billing office and the address of the payment processing company. Instead of following my instructions, the hospital sent the bill to a collections firm. That was incredibly stupid and incompetent. The paperwork that we had proved that this hospital does not follow good business practices. The hospital’s bad business practices could easily hurt senior citizens on Medicare. The bad behavior by the hospital’s billing department left us no choice but to file a complaint against the hospital. All the help that I gave this client was free of charge. This insurance agency “goes the extra mile” for our clients to demonstrate that we really do care for our clients. If your insurance agent or agency does not give this high level of customer service, why not switch to one that does. This one does. Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over two million dollars. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which is available through book stores or online.
