The American Duchess Shore Excursions staff strives to capture the true essence of each port we visit to give you the most authentic immersion into the region. We are constantly working to find the best local guides and historians to share the story of their beloved cities. These independent, local guides will join us on both our Hop-On Hop-Off Tours and Premium Excursions. They will share their knowledge of the port’s history, weaving in their own personal stories and personalities, allowing for an intimate, sometimes unedited, glimpse into the culture and charm of their town. Because these local guides are hired independently, and are not employees of American Duchess Shore Excursions, they will not be included in your voyage gratuities. If you believe your guide did a superb job, please feel free to extend a token of your gratitude.

LO C A L GUI DE S & GR AT UI TI E S

AQSC works with many local historians, civic leaders, and tourism professionals to create the most rewarding premium experiences on America’s Rivers. These local guides take pride in their community and are independent par tners of the AQSC Shore Excursions’ staff and drivers. Often times, our staff is asked for guidelines in regards to rewarding (tipping) of local Premium Tour guides. These local guides are not included in your daily gratuity charges. INDUSTRY GRATUITY GUIDELINE: $1.00 / person - Half Day Excursions $2.00 / person - Full Day Excursions Please note that gratuities are never expected, yet are greatly appreciated, and shall never be solicited by our par tners. Ottawa, Illinois (Chicago, Illinois) Pre-Cruise Am erican Select P r em i u m Exc u rs i o n The largest city of the American Midwest, Chicago, Illinois, was founded in 1830 and quickly grew to become, as Carl Sandburg’s 1916 poem put it, “Hog Butcher, Tool Maker, Stacker of Wheat, Player with Railroads and Freight Handler to the Nation.” Established as a water transit hub, the city evolved into an industrial metropolis, processing and transporting the raw materials of its vast hinterland. Between 1950 and 1960 Chicago’s population shrank for the first time in its history, as factory jobs leveled off and people moved to the suburbs. Since then Chicago’s population increased and it remains a center of trade: Airports supplement the old rail and water transit hubs, and agricultural futures are traded electronically from the floor of its storied Mercantile Exchange.

Ottawa, Illinois

Located at the confluence of the Illinois River and the Fox River, Ottawa is known as “The Friendly City.” The first settlers, mostly fur trappers and traders, arrived on the land around 1823. They traded with the Native American tribes that lived along the Illinois River. “Ottawa” comes from Indian “Awdawe,” which means “to trade.” In 1830, the Green brothers cleared the land of it’s trees and erected a sawmill and gristmill becoming the first to grind wheat in northern Illinois. Shortly after, European immigrants flocked to Ottawa, attracted by the rich soil for farming. Once the building and completion of the Michigan canal was complete Ottawa grew steadily as more business and supplies were brought through the newly built canal.

Included Ottawa Hop-On Hop-Off Reddick mansion

Historically important and architecturally unique, the Reddick Mansion anchors Washington Square, the site of the first Lincoln-Douglas Debate. Built in 1855, this lovely 22-room Italianate mansion was possibly the most expensive and ornate private home built in Illinois before the Civil War. The fifty foot high Reddick Mansion was built with four floors and an attic. The elaborate style on the exterior is also seen in the interior, particularly on the second and third floors. Approximate time: 30 Minutes - 1 Hour

The only I&M Canal toll house in existence, The Ottawa Office offers a unique glimpse of what life was like in the 1800’s. As only one of four stops for the collection of tolls, these houses once stood in LaSalle, Lockport and Chicago with the LaSalle office closing in 1876. Learn the “Lincoln Connection” and of his business and travels along the Canal. See the ‘rope bed’ where nap’s were considered comfortable and view the actual toll log book still in existence today. Photographs and stories from your tour guide will take you back in time to the Lincoln era and when luxury transportation was a boat pulled at four mph by a mule! Approximate time: 15 - 30 Minutes

Ottawa H i st o r i ca l a n d S c o u t i n g H e r i ta g e M u s e u m The Ottawa Historical and Scouting Heritage Museum is dedicated to the preservation of the history of boy scouts, girl scouts, campfire and the Ottawa, Illinois area. Ottawa, Illinois is the home and final resting place of one of the founders of the Boy Scouts of America, William Dickson Boyce. W. D. Boyce incorporated the Boy Scouts of America on February 8, 1910, and the Lone Scouts of America in 1915. This museum houses the famed collections of the Lone Scout Memory Lodge, formerly located in North Carolina, the most extensive collection of Robert Baden-Powell memorabilia in the United States (English scouting) and superior exhibits relating to youth scouting programs for the last 100 years. The All-American Historic Legacy In the 1800s canals were vital lifelines for Americans. Canals provided a thoroughfare for travelers as well as transport of goods. Pulled using the power of mules, canals were an efficient way to navigate the lands and were a popular mode of transportation for President and Mrs. Lincoln. Today, we will travel through the I&M Canal, as period-clothed guides offer informative explanations of each step as we pass through the locks and offer entertaining stories and anecdotes about how the canal helped build Chicago. After passing through the canal, we’ll head over to the historic Visitor’s Center, where we will meet with Mrs. Mary Lincoln, wife of our fearless President, who will share politics, personal stories, and even some secrets!

Peoria, Illinois

Peoria is unique in it’s history and location in Illinois, Archaeologists can trace early man in Peoria as far back as 10,000 B.C.E. Artifacts and burial mounds yield evidence of a Native American civilization that was highly organized, ritualistic, and in harmony with nature. By 1650, the Illinois Indians, a part of the Algonquin Nation, populated the area. The major tribes of the Illinois Confederacy were the Peoria, Kaskaskia, Michigamea, Cahokia, and Tamaroa. In 1673, Father Jacques Marquette and Louis Joliet explored the shores of Peoria later leading to it’s colonization including a fort, trading posts, a blacksmith shop, a chapel and a wine-press. During the Civil War Era, Peoria was sharply divided on the issue of slavery and even hosted the Underground Railroad. Today, Peoria has become famous as a representation of the average American city because of its demographics and its perceived mainstream Midwestern culture and is often used as a test market for new products, services, and public policy polling.
