Dear American Queen Steamboat Company Guest, Mankind has always been drawn to the river, not only for sustenance, but as a landmark. ‘Down by the river’ was not just a necessity, it was a way of life. And for us who decide to experience river travel, it still is. These parts unknown were so malleable that they transformed rapidly into cultures of their own, so different even from the ideals and origins of their settlers. Regional traditions, like those of the Cajuns, were formed and still continue strongly with their own food, history and way of life. The Scandinavian influence is still prevalent on the Upper Mississippi. Steel workers and coal miners still tell stories of loading their goods onto barges on the Ohio and Tennessee rivers. Travel in America is well within our comfort zones, but it is still a frontier with much to be experienced. It’s time not just to vacation, it’s time to experience. As a country, America is still so very new. We will not see medieval castles around every river bend. Instead of centuries old Gothic cathedrals, we will see 20th century white clapboard local parishes that are the center of communities. We may see the efforts of revitalization in a river city’s downtown as they struggle with the remnants of the 1950’s boom and the effect that suburbanization and shopping malls have had on their Main Streets. We will not hear many foreign languages, but rather dialects and accents of which we may not be familiar. We are not showing off a royal spectacle, we are immersed in real life. On board, please allow us to indulge and spoil you in what a vacation is all about. But as you dock onto shore, allow yourself to think differently and take in, even become part of, the communities we visit. We hope you chose to sail with us, not only to escape and vacate your everyday lives, but to appreciate seeing the country (the good, bad and challenged) from the perspective of the river and all there is to learn. Vacation is to escape. American river travel is to engage, educate and appreciate the diversity of this great country.

Memphis, Tennessee Memphis’ first settlers were Native Americans who were drawn to the area’s bluffs overlooking the river. When the explorer Hernando DeSoto and his army arrived in Memphis in 1541, they set up camp and the city of Memphis exchanged hands with the Spanish, French and English, and was eventually being sold to the U.S Government. Today, Memphis is nationally recognized for its contributions to our country’s music influences. Dubbed the “Birthplace of Rock and Roll,” this iconic city offers a vibrant culture and history is intertwined through every street.

However, St. Francisville has a style of its own. Because of the rich history and culture within this river town, the food reflects notes of many different regionsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; traditional cuisines, but with a completely original spin. The building is now used as a market center for the towns’ local artisans and craftsmen to showcase their products and host their small businesses. Every day is different, you may see anything from jewelry and makeup, scarves and dresses, or snacks and produce! Suggested Visit: 30 - 45 minutes

Roya l S t r eet Take a stroll down Royal Street at any of the shops or just to admire the beautiful trees and homes. Or stop into Grandmother’s Buttons – a unique boutique that offers jewelry made of 100-year-old buttons. Inside the store, you can visit the button museum to learn the history of the business and the inspirations of the art. The store is located inside of a former historic bank lobby with 16-foot ceilings and a bank vault. Even if jewelry is not in your plans, the architecture is beautiful. This street also features some of the most historic antebellum homes in America! Suggested Visit: 30 - 45 minutes

W est Feli c i a n a H i s to r i ca l S o c i e t y M u s e u m This museum is dedicated to the history, people, and architectures of West Feliciana Parish. Inside a former hardware store, built in 1896, the Historical Society Museum displays many artifacts, photos, costumes, and articles all portraying the history of St. Francisville. G r ac e E p i s c o pa l C h u r c h Built in 1860 and rebuilt in 1893 after the Union caused heavy damage in 1863, Grace Episcopal Church stands tall in St. Francisville. Enjoy a selfguided tour of the church and the grounds and make sure to check out the organ located inside – it dates all the way back to 1860! The church is one of the state’s oldest Protestant churches that still stands today. Suggested Visit: 15 - 30 minutes

Plantations of the Back Roads

Today’s experience goes beyond the expectations of a “traditional” southern plantation and offers guided tours of two plantations with a more personal touch – Rosedown and Catalpa. Experience two southern plantations that are owned and operated by the descendants of the original families, the same family! We will begin at Rosedown Plantation, one of the most intact documented examples of a domestic plantation complex in the South. Rosedown was established in the 1830s by Daniel and Martha Barrow Turnbull, and remained in the hands of their descendants until the 1950s.

Pay close attention to see if you can find the family portrait that is displayed in both Catalpa and Rosedown!

A r r i v e at Cata l pa P l a n tat i o n Catalpa Plantation is one of numerous late Victorian cottages found across Louisiana, significant for the beautiful gardens that surround it. The oak trees lining the grounds were planted in 1814, and Catalpaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s oak alley is thought to be the only one in Louisiana which has an elliptical shape.

To u r Cata l pa P l a n tat i o n On your guided tour of Catalpa, an American Queen Steamboat Company exclusive, you will learn that it was primarily a cotton plantation in the antebellum period. Its grounds were devastated during the Civil War, the plantation house was burned, and Mr. Fort, the owner, died. In 1885, his son, William J. Fort, rebuilt Catalpa and it is this house that still stands.

Natchez, Mississippi This charming river town was first inhabited by Natchez Indians and French explorers who shared the land. It was founded in 1716, making it the oldest city on the Mississippi River. The city is known for its elegance, hospitality, and impressive preservation of history, which can be found on every street corner throughout the town. Guests will enjoy the unique shops, restaurants, museums, and antebellum houses located in Natchez.

William Johnson was known as the “Barber of Natchez.” He began life as a slave, but gained his freedom at age eleven. His 3-story brick home was built in 1840 and showcases many original furnishings. Suggested Visit: 30 - 45 minutes

Now fully restored, This Greek Revival Mansion was built in 1858. The house was built before the breakout of the Civil War in town but did suffer some damage – a cannon ball was launched into their kitchen! Suggested Visit: 30 - 45 minutes

Enter one of the most unique rum distilleries in America, where Doug and Jean-Luc Charboneau make Gold Medal winning rums from local sugar products. Enjoy a sample and then walk next door to King’s Tavern, the oldest building in Natchez - circa 1789. Suggested Visit: 15 - 30 minutes

On todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s journey, visit two of the most iconic structures in Natchez. Our excursion begins at the beautifully unfinished Longwood Mansion, the number one attraction in Natchez. Our guide will help us explore the property while we will imagine what could have been. Continue to Melrose Mansion to discover the lavish lifestyle of this historic plantationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s former owners. This exorbitant display is symbolic of the southern prosperity at the time.

Embark on a guided tour of the distinguished Longwood Mansion, the number one attraction in Natchez. Designed by famed Philadelphia architect Samuel Sloan for plantation owner Haller Nutt, the construction of this mansion was never completed. While the exquisite octagonal exterior of the mansion showcases the design expertise at work, the inside of the building has been left largely unfinished. During the building’s construction, northern workers abandoned their masterpiece when word arrived that the Civil War was underway. The mansion has since become known as “Nutt’s Folly.” Longwood’s iconic oriental design and distinct cupola may spark your imagination as you explore the grounds and discover the unfinished interior that would have certainly become breathtaking.

E x p lo r e M el r o s e M a n s i o n As we continue our exploration of Natchez, we will visit Melrose Mansion, which is widely considered one of the finest homes in Natchez. This Greek Revival home greets you with a full-height front entry porch featuring four Doric columns. Known as the “Main House”, this home was constructed for plantation-owner and lawyer John McMurran and his family. The home was filled with ornate furniture, carpets, drapes and more. Behind the main house, were the outbuildings, where a kitchen, livestock, and the slaves of the estate were located. Vicksburg, Mississippi For months Ulysses S. Grant and his Army of the Tennessee were trying to overtake Vicksburg, Mississippi – “ The Key to the South” as described by Abraham Lincoln. In late May 1863, Grant undertook a new campaign to gain access to this vital river city. After many attempts, Vicksburg still fought back and caused the Union Army to fall back. Grant chose to attack again full force at Champion Hill and Big Black Bridge, weakening John C. Pemberton’s Army causing it to retreat and finally leaving the Mississippi River in Union hands.

Pillow, the historic Pillow-Thompson House has been beautifully restored to offer visitors a look at one of the finest examples of Queen Anne architecture in the South. The home features many original furnishings and showcases the quality and high degree of Victorian embellishments that were utilized in the construction of many finer homes in Helena during the Gilded Age. F o rt C u rt i s The original Fort Curtis was built soon after Union forces occupied Helena in 1862 and served in the Union defense during the Battle of Helena in July, 1863. This replica, named after the Union General in command Samuel R. Curtis, allows visitors to experience an earthen fort, including the massive 24-pounder guns. Suggested Visit: 30 - 45 Minutes

S t. M a ry's Cat h o l i c C h u r c h Built between 1934-1935, St. Mary’s Catholic Church is considered one of the finest examples of an early Christian church west of the Mississippi River.
