American Duchess Shore Excursions is proud to contribute to the growth of small American towns. Unlike other cruiselines, we do not partner with local businesses for commission or kickbacks. Our support and suggestions are purely to benefit the local businesses and local economies. These authentic American towns do not often feature the ritzy shops and cafés frequently visited on European river cruises. Instead, local, hardworking business owners present their piece of the American dream in towns whose glory days are long gone, but their spirits remain. Please remember that these independently owned businesses that create their own hours to fit their schedules and may not always be open during their advertised times. When possible, we include stops near local pharmacies, so our guests can refill prescriptions or purchase any necessary supplies. Thank you for supporting these local towns by taking advantage of the unique shopping opportunities. DAILY SHOPPING OPPORTUNITIES

Bettendorf, Iowa
The modern history of Bettendorf, Iowa began about 180 years ago, when Dr. John Emerson, a U.S. Army surgeon at Fort Armstrong in Rock Island, purchased a 320 acre section of land within present day city limits and built a cabin on the property. Dr. Emerson owned a black slave, Dred Scott, who later sued for his freedom in federal court and whose case became a defining moment in the struggle to end slavery in the United States. By the early 1850’s, a man named Lillienthal settled near State and 13th, built a home, and opened a business. Other settlers followed. The settlement became known as Lilienthal and later merged with Gilbert to become Bettendorf.

Bates and became a popular stop along the river for many steamboats traveling up the Mississippi River.
