The American Duchess Shore Excursions staff strives to capture the true essence of each port we visit to give you the most authentic immersion into the region. We are constantly working to find the best local guides and historians to share the story of their beloved cities. These independent, local guides will join us on both our Hop-On Hop-Off Tours and Premium Excursions. They will share their knowledge of the port’s history, weaving in their own personal stories and personalities, allowing for an intimate, sometimes unedited, glimpse into the culture and charm of their town. Because these local guides are hired independently, and are not employees of American Duchess Shore Excursions, they will not be included in your voyage gratuities. If you believe your guide did a superb job, please feel free to extend a token of your gratitude.
LO C A L GUI DE S & GR AT UI TI E S
AQSC works with many local historians, civic leaders, and tourism professionals to create the most rewarding premium experiences on America’s Rivers. These local guides take pride in their community and are independent par tners of the AQSC Shore Excursions’ staff and drivers. Often times, our staff is asked for guidelines in regards to rewarding (tipping) of local Premium Tour guides. These local guides are not included in your daily gratuity charges. INDUSTRY GRATUITY GUIDELINE: $1.00 / person - Half Day Excursions $2.00 / person - Full Day Excursions Please note that gratuities are never expected, yet are greatly appreciated, and shall never be solicited by our par tners. Alton, Illinois (St. Louis, Missouri) Pre-Cruise Am erican Select P r em i u m Exc u rs i o n In its early days, Alton was a bustling river town, much larger than Chicago. Alton was built on industry - flour mills, quarries, brick making, pottery making - and relied on the Mississippi River. The “Steamboat Era played an important role of the growth of Alton, and riverboat traffic can still be seen from the riverfront up and down the Mighty Mississippi River.

Grafton, Illinois
Grafton is the oldest city in Jersey County and its history is openly depicted in every rustic home, hometown hospitality, and architectural structure lining the streets of the town. Officially founded in 1836, Grafton’s prime location on the river necessitated a boat construction industry. Limestone helped contribute to Grafton’s growth as quarries were one of the richest and most extensive of the town’s resources. St. Louis even uses the limestone from Grafton in the Old Cathedral and the Eads Bridge.

Hannibal, Missouri
Hannibal, Missouri has a rich history, diverse industrial economy, and truly remarkable arts. The city was founded in 1819 by Moses D. Bates and became a popular stop along the river for many steamboats traveling up the Mississippi River. Hannibal offers more parks per citizens than most towns in the Midwest and was included in the famous “50 Miles of Art.” Today, the most popular draw of this quirky town is Hannibal’s very own, Samuel Langhorne Clemens, recognized world-wide as Mark Twain. Many of the popular characters featured in Twain’s novels were based on people Clemens had known while growing up in Hannibal. Many of the characters and influences of this American icon are weaved into the streets, shops, restaurants, and museums of Hannibal waiting to be uncovered.

Havana, Illinois
The town of Havana was originally surveyed in 1827 for a man named Ossian Ross, who wanted to start a canoe ferry business. After he established his business, Havana started to grow in population and became a settlement named Ross’ Ferry. In 1848, Havana was incorporated as a town and got its name due to a small island near the mouth of the river that was shaped like Cuba. Locals called their town Havana because they were next to “Cuba.” By 1900, the town was known as a fishing and hunting center and was the most important inland fishing port in the United States. Havana became a bustling town by the first half of the twentieth century with movie theaters, fish markets, and drugstores.

Peoria, Illinois
Peoria is unique in its history and location in Illinois. Archaeologists can trace early man in Peoria as far back as 10,000 B.C.E. Artifacts and burial mounds yield evidence of a Native American civilization that was highly organized, ritualistic, and in harmony with nature. By 1650, the Illinois Indians, a part of the Algonquin Nation, populated the area. The major tribes of the Illinois Confederacy were the Peoria, Kaskaskia, Michigamea, Cahokia, and Tamaroa. In 1673, Father Jacques Marquette and Louis Joliet explored the shores of Peoria later leading to its colonization including a fort, trading posts, a blacksmith shop, a chapel and a wine-press. During the Civil War era, Peoria was sharply divided on the issue of slavery and even hosted the Underground Railroad. Today, Peoria has become famous as a representation of the average American city because of its demographics and its perceived mainstream Midwestern culture. It is often used as a test market for new products, services, and public policy polling.

Ottawa, Illinois
Located at the confluence of the Illinois River and the Fox River, Ottawa is known as “The Friendly City.” The first settlers, mostly fur trappers and traders, arrived on the land around 1823. They traded with the Native American tribes that lived along the Illinois River. “Ottawa” comes from Indian “Awdawe,” which means “to trade.” In 1830, the Green brothers cleared the land of its trees and erected a sawmill and gristmill becoming the first to grind wheat in northern Illinois. Shortly after, European immigrants flocked to Ottawa, attracted by the rich soil for farming. Once the building and completion of the Michigan canal was complete Ottawa grew steadily as more business and supplies were brought through the newly built canal.

Ottawa, Illinois (Chicago, Illinois)
The largest city of the American Midwest, Chicago, Illinois, was founded in 1830 and quickly grew to become, as Carl Sandburg’s 1916 poem put it, “Hog Butcher, Tool Maker, Stacker of Wheat, Player with Railroads and Freight Handler to the Nation.” Established as a water transit hub, the city evolved into an industrial metropolis, processing and transporting the raw materials of its vast hinterland. Between 1950 and 1960 Chicago’s population shrank for the first time in its history, as factory jobs leveled off and people moved to the suburbs. Since then Chicago’s population increased and it remains a center of trade: Airports supplement the old rail and water transit hubs, and agricultural futures are traded electronically from the floor of its storied Mercantile Exchange.
