Mission As Christians we have hope that, through Christ, our future is secured and God provides for our daily needs. At Valley Presbyterian Church, we want to extend this hope into our neighborhoods, cities, country, and world. We do this by advocating for the marginalized, providing basic necessities of life for the forgotten and proclaiming the Good News to the lost. God uses His church in amazing ways; we are thankful for all the ways He used VPC in 2015. -Chris Woodard 45th Annual Cooks’ Tour: Hands Across the City, Arms Around the World This year hundreds of people came to our campus for Presbyterian Women’s major fundraiser. Over the years we have helped fund over 50 organizations (local, national, and worldwide). It takes many hands to make the day go well, and during the year of preparation over 400 volunteers participated and enjoyed fellowship with each other. Sandra Gonzales and her family prepared a heavenly lunch for over 325 guests. Twenty students from Coronado High School were the cheerful servers.

Report Pages Children
Ministry to the children is important, because children are being shaped and molded by all the influences around them. Our desire is to see children connect with Jesus in a personal way through experiences at church and at home. Our volunteer team is committed to sharing the message of salvation each week in loving fun ways. Our special events reach out to the community and provide an opportunity for connection. We hope to partner with parents as they nurture their child’s faith. We minister to the KIDS; We train and nurture our VOLUNTEERS; We reach beyond our walls with SPECIAL EVENTS; We support FAMILIES by helping them grow as spiritual leaders of their household. We PRAY the children of our community come to know Jesus as their Lord and savior. -Tina Gilbreath
Valley Day School Learning through play…. Every day! The purpose of the Day School is to provide a Christian school built upon a sound educational program, where meaningful relationships develop between home and school, child and teacher, and the world around them. We have been an outreach at VPC for 53 years; we serve our church families and the community at large. We have 105 families with 124 students, 10 teachers, and 8 different classes. The school community comes together various times through the year for fun family activities like Family Fun Night, Movie Night, and Open House, plus other school community activities. We also run a four-week summer camp each year. The school is able to provide scholarships to families in need, who otherwise would not be able to attend. These children are precious, and we are fortunate enough to share in their world each day. -Julie Johnson

Women To say God’s Spirit is moving in big ways through the Women’s Ministry would be an understatement. I am humbled every day to get to walk through life with the women I meet in bible studies, fellowship events, Presbyterian Women, and MOPS (just to name a few). God is using a variety of opportunities geared to meet the diverse needs of women in our community. The creativity and spiritual depth found in these groups is energizing and exciting. I have been beyond blessed this past year! I am honored to call many women my new friends and look forward with an expectant heart to 2016 for the great things God is planning. -Leslie Woodard MOPS is a ministry focused on reaching moms and helping them find community. Our MOPS program has continued to grow - attracting families from the church, Day School, and across the valley. Over 75 women have been involved in 2015, and over 105 kids under age 6 have been part of MOPS Kids. A Friday morning at MOPS is about making connections and building friendships. It’s about laughter, celebration, and the chance to belong. MOPS is a place where moms come to catch their breath. It’s the chance to share Jesus over a cup of coffee. It’s a place to grow as mothers, wives, and friends. 14 guest speakers joined us in 2015, challenging us to be intentional with our children, inspiring us to become spiritual leaders in our families, and affirming God’s never ending love for each of us. -Meghan Gottfredson Presbyterian Women held its Church-wide Gathering in Minneapolis with the theme “One Body, One Spirit” from 1 Corinthians 12:12-13. 1736 amazing women met with our incredible global mission partners to celebrate, worship, and learn. Our six circles studied “Come to the Waters” and met monthly for fellowship and study. Thanks to JoAnn Jones for her “Bible Study Briefings” prior to meetings. PW also donated $10,000 to Sunshine Acres and $1,000 to the Thank and Birthday offerings in addition to our $2,800 PQ pledge. -Wandie Hulick, Moderator

In 2015, VPC Men’s Ministry began the New Year by hosting our 28th Annual Men’s Breakfast at Gainey Ranch with the theme “God’s Call; Our Cities” with over 170 men attending. Along with great food, fantastic fellowship, and music, we were challenged and inspired by a series of speakers including The Honorable Douglas A. Ducey, Governor of Arizona, as well as our keynote speaker, Dr. Bruce Main, founder of UrbanPromise in Camden, New Jersey. In the course of the year, our Men enjoyed a Spring Training Baseball game and an outing at Top Golf where over 25 guys enjoyed lots of food and laughter while showing off their driving and chipping skills or at least attempting to do so. In late September, 30 men gathered at Living Springs Camp just outside of Sedona for an amazing weekend of recreation and relaxation hiking Oak Creek Canyon, fly fishing or enjoying a rousing game of horseshoes. Rev. Luke Parker was our guest teacher and led us on a study of David centered on our retreat theme, “After God’s Own Heart”. In addition to the breakfast, fun outings and our retreat, we also shared in blessing many of the children in south central Phoenix by joining with many others in our church for a blitz build of a safe playground for children called “Kaboom”. -David Turner
Prayer House of Prayer 2015 Our church community made a commitment to have every person in our church family prayed for everyday in 2015. On November 22, 2015, our congregation was invited to continue this commitment into 2016. Those who wanted to be a part of this journey received the names of people within our congregation who they would pray over every day for a year. The prayers have not stopped since! We pray because we know that as we commit ourselves to communion with God the world will change, and our Heavenly Father will bring the Kingdom in us and around us. We are a faith community that believes in the power of prayer. -Leslie Woodard

Adult Education
Encore University
Our Adult Discipleship ministry is focused on providing educational opportunities for members to learn more about God and to learn to follow Jesus better every day. We strive not only to help our church gain theological head knowledge, but to gain heart experience through a relationship with God, and for that to translate into obedience to God and service to the world.
Encore University achieved much success in 2015 and strives to continue this success in 2016 by taking our outreach efforts to the next level. The ultimate mission for Encore is to build new relationships and encourage a sense of community at VPC through increased participation and membership.
There are many ways for our members to join smaller communities of people who are learning more about the Bible and the Christian life. Educational opportunities at our church include Wednesday night classes, Encore University, and Community Groups. Topics in 2015 included Ethics, the Book of Romans, Presbyterian Creeds, and the Hymns. For the Spring of 2016, we have planned to offer a parenting class for young families, our yearly Financial Peace class, and classes about several biblical topics. We pray that those involved in these educational ministries will grow closer to Jesus and closer to the people he wants us to be. -Kelsey Woodruff
The Promised Rock At The Promised Rock Student Ministries, we have been blessed by the Lord with another year of great ministry! Students have come to know Jesus Christ as their Lord and have grown in their discipleship which is more than we could ever ask for. Our Sunday morning group, Monday night group, and Wednesday night groups have all been well attended. They are paving the way for continued fruitful ministry to our students. We thank you for your support this past year and ask that you continue to pray for this ministry. Know that we are also praying for you and for your involvement in our students lives. What a blessing it is to be in the community of God; our hope in 2016 is for all generations to be a part of our student ministry. This year we will launch our High School leadership group called “Servant Leadership”, offering a youth membership class, and continue to explore new ways to reach teens and young adults. God has paved the way and we are excited to follow where he is leading. Blessings in 2016! -Jordan Gustafson
In the fall of 2015, Encore launched its Ambassador Program. With the implementation of this program, Encore will continue to make a difference in the lives of others through Lifelong Learning, as well as provide the groundwork for developing relationships through discipleship. By understanding the needs of our students, faith via action will be encouraged through involvement and spiritual growth. In 2015 our popular Breakfast Speaker Series included: Derek Hall, Jon Kyl, and Robert Robb. Two exceptional Three-Day Seminars were offered which featured Jeffrey Weima and Aydin Aygun. Professors Emeriti from Arizona State University joined the outstanding faculty at Encore. There is so much opportunity to share the love of Christ and Valley Presbyterian Church with others here at Encore University. Come grow with us! -Becky Bennett, Tracy Keller, and Debbie Sayre
Divorce Recovery Over the course of the year, our Divorce Recovery Ministry has undergone some adjustments as we honored the ministry and faithfulness of Lisa Bateman and continued this important work. This year we have been led to Sheila Rud, who continued this vital ministry to our church family and community. She reflected on her work this fall: “The Divorce recovery program was beneficial to its participants in several ways. Participants were able to begin to develop strategies for working through painful feelings and develop personal strengths to help them thrive.” -David Turner & Sheila Rud

“Worship is our response, both personal and corporate, to God for who He is, and what He has done; expressed in and by the things we say and the way we live.” – Louie Giglio.
Thank you members and staff for your generous support. During a potentially difficult time 2015 ended with a $63K surplus!
The purpose of VPF is to hold and generate funds for use in the mission and preservation of the church; we support all ministries at VPC. The Foundation has net assets in excess of $4.7 million, and distributed over $200,000 in earnings to various needs of the church in 2015.
We have an opportunity to worship our great God through several different styles, settings, and experiences. In the Chapel, we experience a quiet, intimate worship setting. In the Landes Center, we get a modern experience with praise band and contagious energy. In the Sanctuary, we find a traditional setting with choir and organ. In each of these settings, we worship the same Lord and are blessed by the dedication of our volunteers, congregation, and staff each week. 2015 was a dynamic year for Worship, Music, and Arts: •Hired a Minister of Music (Jennifer Hamm) •Hired a Worship Leader (Travis Kingma) •Hired a Organist (Hyunmi Lee) •Chancel Choir gained 6 new members and a few returning members •Launched EXPLORERS!, an after-school program for children K-5th grade to learn about the world and Jesus in creative ways
Thank you to the Foundation, which supported some of our operating and capital expenditures. The VPF Legacy Dinner Fund the Need program generated over $77K for three capital projects. We continue to have no external debt, but did use our Line of Credit (LOC) throughout the summer. Cash flow improved tremendously in November! Kris Bahr is a master at keeping our LOC low and all the financial business of all VPC, VPF and VDS operations. F&O is blessed with terrific committee members, staff support, and volunteers: Elders: Fred Fetters, Gloria Gabler, Vicki Tatum Members: Jayann Fordon, Kiki Swanson, Charles Kurz, Nancy Pohl, John Stuart Staff: Brandon Fox, Kris Bahr, David Joynt. Our many telephone receptionists, Counting Team, and our Sextons-Paul, Russ and Will-who keep our ministries and campus running! -Dick Lockwood
In addition to those dollars, VPF was able to “Fund the Need” through monies raised at the annual Legacy Dinner. These generous donations allowed us to quickly provide 400 new chairs for Landes Center, repair a leaking roof over the Chapel, and complete several major plumbing projects. VPF sponsors two concerts a year Chancel Choir and orchestra. We academic and mission scholarships to maintain the Memorial Garden, and and Stephen ministries.

Our goals are to increase Legacy membership and communicate the message that no amount is too small to leave for future members. We thank everyone who has remembered the Foundation and VPC in their estate plans, as well as those who have contributed their time and talents to enhance the investment in our church community’s future. -Vicki Biggs Tatum
•Schubert’s Mass in G (and other choral pieces) performed by the Chancel Choir and La Forza Chamber Orchestra •Chancel Choir, Praise Band, and members of the Phoenix Symphony presented a Christmas Cantata •Projection of hymns in the Sanctuary and relaunch of the Bell Choir •The Organ Repair committee met several times to assess repair options and costs

Pastor Kelsey Woodruff Like many of you, I chose Valley Presbyterian Church because of the unique community I found here. Soon after moving to Phoenix, my family and I were drawn in by this church’s welcoming atmosphere, lively ministries, and strong theological grounding. In short, it was a place in which we saw God’s hand already at work, and at which we felt we could join into what his Spirit was doing here. God was at work in so many areas of our church’s life in 2015! Some of the highlights I have personally experienced this year have been through Sunday worship, Women’s, and Children’s ministries. Sunday services are times when all generations in our church to come together to worship God and remember what He has done for us. It has been wonderful to hear the new voices of our Minister of Music Jennifer Hamm and Contemporary Worship Leader Travis Kingma. The Women’s Ministry breakfast brought over a hundred women in all stages of life into the same room to form friendships, worship, and meditate on Scripture together. The Mothers of Preschoolers ministry has been growing in number and excitement as moms and their children are welcomed onto our campus every other Friday. My oldest son has become involved in EXPLORERS!, one of the wonderful Children’s programs that is reaching out to young families. I have heard many from the congregation express happiness over the many new families finding a church home here. I joined the staff of VPC in August in the area of Discipleship, where I had the opportunity to learn from and build upon the wonderful ministry that Pastor Turner developed, in conjunction with the dedicated members of the Discipleship committee. I have loved being a part of a wholehearted staff that are empowered and encouraged by Pastor Joynt. All of our leaders, both staff and lay volunteers, are earnestly serving the church and enabling it to spread the good news of Jesus and his love for us. One of the most special moments of my year was being ordained as a Minister of the Word and Sacrament in VPC’s Sanctuary in December. I was grateful to all who participated in the service through liturgy, music, or attendance. The service was representative of the welcome that my family and I have received here. I have been blessed to serve as the Interim Director of Discipleship, and I look forward to the new perspectives and gifts that Mike and Kelly Nieto will bring as Associate Pastors of Discipleship in 2016.
Pastor David Turner
When I was in High School, I ran track, my specialty was the 2 mile run. By nature I tend to be competitive and I found this event as one that not only tested my endurance but more importantly my focus. Success came to me only when I’d learned the valuable lesson of focusing on my game plan for the race rather than observing who was in the stands; tuning out the cries of encouragement to my competitors and instead training my ear to the voice of my coach. I learned at an early age the importance of being focused and listening to the right voice. This lesson has been invaluable to me over the years as ministry requires focused ear tuned into God’s voice. Without it, ministry can easily be sidetracked. While ministry is always a challenge, this past year has brought new tests, and at times the race has been extra tiring, but God’s grace abounds; God’s voice of guidance and encouragement rises above the clamor. His kingdom building, where lives encounter the grace and love of Jesus Christ, prevails. This past year I’ve had the privilege of caring for 28 grieving families through a total of over 40 memorial services, encouraging them in the healing process and pointing them to our grief support ministry. Our Stephen Ministry continues to expand, with over 50 trained Stephen Ministers catching the vision of this caring ministry as they share in a life-changing experience for many people. This past year our Congregation Care Ministry has expanded to partner with Fuller Theological Seminary. We have added two therapists-in-training through the Marriage & Family program to our ministry, under supervision of the seminary to work with a broad range of counseling needs. In addition to providing much needed professional counseling services at no cost, the Congregation Care Ministry offered a first ever “Care Giver’s Ministry” Workshop, attracting over 30 participants for a Saturday training session to equip those interested in sharing our time with those in hospitals, homes and care communities. We focused on the care giver’s internal preparation for the ministry through the use of prayer, scripture, humor, and active listening. We also took time to learn about caring for someone with dementia and the grieving process when a care-giver loses their care-receiver. This past year was also a year of visioning new possibilities for the future as groundwork was laid for the possibility of a new Parish Nurse Ministry as well as the expansion of our Mental Health Ministry. This past year has been filled with challenges, but I’ve also learned that God is able to do far more than what we’d ever imagine- if only we’d listen and follow. May we never forget the lesson we learn from the past and move into this New Year with great anticipation of what God will do when we step out in faith! Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen” (Ephesians 3:20-21)
