MISSION What an incredible God we serve! I am amazed that the Lord of the universe would use people like you and me to actualize the Good News of Jesus Christ. Through our brokenness and messiness God brings redemption. Daily I see this happening. From the loyal mentors who serve at MentorKids USA, to the tender souls that serve meals to families without homes through Family Promise, to those whose hearts have been captured by our friends in Malawi, to those who are generous with our resources, God has been using all of us at VPC to make a positive impact for Christ in our communities. What a joy that is found in our lives when we turn our hearts towards the service and mission that God has placed before us. God used VPC in astounding ways this 2016 and it is with great excitement and hope that I look forward to 2017. -Chris Woodard 46th Annual Cooks’ Tour: Hands Across the City, Arms Around the World On November 4, 2016, hundreds of people came to our campus for Presbyterian Women’s major fund raiser—the 46th Annual Cooks’ Tour. Funding from last year’s event was presented to 15 different organizations both local and worldwide. Highlights from this year included : a campus tour of the art of Robert and Louise McCall and the Gifts of the Heart Christmas cards painted by Tom and Dick Van Arsdale benefitting Mentor Kids, Medical Benevolence Foundation, and Ministry of Hope. It takes hundreds of hands to make the day a fabulous experience. Sandra Gonzales and her wonderful family prepared a delicious luncheon served by 20 cheerful students from Coronado High School. Mariachis added to the fiesta.

The VPC Children’s Ministry staff is blessed with the privilege of ministering to more than 100 children, volunteers and parents each week. We are so honored to tell God’s story to the children at VPC. Our compassionate and enthusiastic volunteer team is committed to sharing the Gospel message weekly in memorable and personal ways to our children. These children are the future of our church and our faith, and because the majority of people who accept Christ do so as children, our time with them is even more important. In addition to ministering to our current families, we are constantly looking for ways to connect with new families in our community through special events and other ministry areas such as Valley Day School and MOPS. Children, Volunteers, Parents, Families, these are our blessing and our focus! -Tina Gilbreath

VALLEY DAY SCHOOL At Valley Day School, we are committed to enriching the spiritual, physical and intellectual development of all children in our care. Our loving teachers provide a first school experience where students learn through play and grow in faith. As a ministry of VPC, we strive to connect our preschool families to the surrounding church community. Our school day includes music, movement, art, and chapel. WOMEN’S MINISTRY

REPORT PAGES WOMEN’S MINISTRY

2016 was an exciting year in Women’s Ministry! We had the first Women’s Retreat in many years; women of all ages headed to Prescott for a weekend of spiritual renewal and deepening friendships. Women bonded during the Progressive dinner, bunko night, summer get together, and an evening of painting. In the Fall, women experienced the Women’s Breakfast. During the summer we said goodbye to Leslie Woodard, who led the Women’s Ministry for several years with creativity, passion, and love. Leslie and her family now reside in Tucson, where Leslie is in ministry at St. Andrews Presbyterian.

At MOPS preschool moms from all over the Valley gather twice a month for coffee and the chance to connect. Our meetings are an opportunity to laugh, cry, and embrace the journey of motherhood. A typical MOPS Friday includes an encouraging speaker or an engaging activity.

Presbyterian Women provides small group Bible studies in four circles which meet monthly, September through May. We remain so grateful to JoAnn Jones who continues to give us an informative “Bible Study Briefing” to prepare for meetings. Gloria Murison and Judy Draper presented programs after delicious monthly luncheons prepared by Sandra Gonzales. We learned about Phoenix Theatre, Medical Benevolence Foundation, Days for Girls, women of the Bible, and Native American traditions. The Hat Fashion Show and Coronado High School Chorus Christmas program were huge hits. Sunshine Acres was presented with a check so each child could pick out clothes they liked. We set up and served the congregational dinner and prepared and served a meal with Family Promise. Donations to our Thank and Birthday offerings totaled $892. We supported World Wide Missions ($1,600), Presbytery of the Grand Canyon and the Synod ($600), and Days for Girls ($200) among others. -Wandie Hulick, Moderator

At MOPS, women find friendship over breakfast and form connections that last a lifetime.

MEN’S MINISTRY Our Men’s Ministry began the year discovering their passion. This theme was the focus of the 2016 Men’s Breakfast, which attracted over 160 participants for a morning of fellowship over breakfast, inspirational music, and challenging messages. We listened to the story of Ron Wolfley, former NFL player and radio talk host who told his story of life in professional sports and told a little of his journey with Jesus Christ. We were challenged through the vision of author and speaker Dr. Robert Moffit. Dr. M. Craig Barnes, President and Professor of Pastoral Ministry at Princeton Theological Seminary, shared with us his thoughts on passionate relationships. In October, 35 men gathered at Prescott Pines Camp in Prescott for a weekend retreat on the theme “New Perspective.” Led by Rev. Bryan Fergus, teaching Pastor at Calvary Community Church, we focused our study sessions and small group discussions on Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. When we weren’t in our sessions, we were enjoying hikes, horseshoes and the famous zip-line. Finally, 2016 brought to our Men’s Ministry a new small group study and book discussion on James Bryan Smith’s book, “The Good and Beautiful God.” The nine-week discussion focused on our narrative of who God is that impacts how we live. -David Turner

STUDENT MINISTRY

Accepting Christ into your life is step one of a lifelong discipleship adventure. We’re here to help with the rest of your journey! Throughout the year, we offer classes to deepen your faith journey and help you live more in Christ’s image. We offer a once-a-year event called the “Day of Discipleship” that presents a speaker and seminars covering ways to live into your faith. Our inaugural event, held in October, attracted over 100 people! We sponsor the Women’s and Men’s Ministries, offering studies, breakfasts, and retreats each year. We also sponsor the Community Groups, made up of peers who engage in learning, growth, mission, and fellowship. Each group is open for new members and happily invites anyone who wants to share time with Christian peers. This past fall we launched Alpha and The Marriage Course (also from Alpha), involving nearly a hundred people. Both will be offered regularly, providing a way to bring friends and family to a gentle introduction to Christianity (or a great refresher course). We also offered Summer Movie Nights for families in June and July. Last year we made an exciting launch of RightNow Media, a website free to use with thousands of video courses and other offerings on a wide range of Christian topics. And we’re just getting started – we have plans and dreams to help you continue to become the disciple Jesus called you to be.

At VPC Student Ministry, God has moved in incredible ways throughout 2016! 18 students have come to know Jesus Christ as their Lord for the first time and many more have grown in their discipleship throughout the year, which is more than we could ever ask or imagine! Our weekly groups have continued to be fruitful. This year we had the privilege of welcoming 7 students as members of VPC through our confirmation class. In 2016 we also began our High School Leadership experience inviting our juniors and seniors to become Junior High ministry leaders. They have all stepped into the role in amazing ways and have blessed many through this process. Lastly, another large victory this year came from starting a year-long internship position for a college student looking to go into full time ministry upon their college graduation. We have been blessed by the leadership of Joseph Parisi in this position who has stepped in and done a fantastic job leading our junior high students. We thank you for your support this past year and ask that you continue to pray for this ministry. We are also praying for you and for your involvement in our students’ lives. Our hope in 2017 is for all generations to be a part of our student ministry. God is paving the way and we aim to follow closely with each step we take. Blessings in 2017!

PRAYER

DIVORCE RECOVERY

The Prayer Ministry at VPC is a ministry of every member and friend of the congregation. It is a ministry that takes place in the worship service, in homes, in schools, and in every moment that the people of God come to Him with their thanks, their confessions, and their needs. House of Prayer is a group within VPC that intentionally prays each week for specific people and events in the church. Each week, the “prayer” receives an email with a devotion on prayer and prayers to pray for that week. The weekly email is a connection point in building a church life of prayer and seeking God. Divorce Recovery Ministry underwent significant adjustments in 2016 as we welcomed our new facilitator, Anna Kohls, a licensed Associate Marriage and Family Therapist. She has worked on developing a program that provides needed information, encouragement, and ample time for discussion. This past year the study themes included topics such as grief and loss, anger, forgiveness, boundaries, and hope for the holidays. The class included include teaching, resources guides for assistance outside of class, group discussion and processing and prayer. -David Turner

ENCORE UNIVERSITY

Encore University continues to provide exceptional programming as Adventures in Lifelong Learning continue at VPC. Encore plays a vital role in Outreach for Valley Presbyterian Church. In 2016, the popular Breakfast Speaker Series included Radio & TV Personality Pat McMahon and Sports Executive & Philanthropist, Jerry Colangelo. Jeffrey Weima returned to lead a three-day seminar during the winter term. Pastor Associate Kelsey Woodruff, along with Pastors Kelly and Mike Nieto, joined the College of Religion as Facilitators. Faculty included Arizona State Professors Emeriti and Senior Lecturers, Career Professionals, and VPC Members – what a talented group! A special thank you to everyone who gives their time and talents as Encore continues to flourish. As a non-profit ministry of VPC, Encore relies on course fees, registration fees, and volunteerism to produce and sustain the stimulating, informative, and fun curriculum offerings. For many Encore is more than learning, it’s a place where friendships are made and common interests are shared. Moving forward, Encore will be working closely with Discipleship and Spiritual Growth in order to further cultivate the Ambassador Program. In the fall of 2017, Encore will celebrate its Fifth Anniversary. There is so much opportunity to spread the good news about Valley Presbyterian Church to all who visit our campus. Highlights from 2016: -Fantastic worship celebrating VPC’s 60th Anniversary. -Outstanding special services including: Ash Wednesday, Easter Week, Thanksgiving Eve, and Service of Remembrance in the Memorial Garden. -Communion monthly, for those at-home, on mission trips and at our Youth Transition event. -Baptisms for babies, teens, and adults. -First year anniversary of Minister of Music Jennifer Hamm. -Four new Valley Singers and a growing choir. -Well-attended Slavery and Song with Mountain View Choir, and Mostly Messiah. -Thriving contemporary service under Travis Kingma’s first year of leading worship. -Involved discipleship in our flower ministry. -Committed discipleship with our regular usher and communion servers. -Restoration of our beautiful handbells. -EXPLORERS! exposing an ever-increasing number of children to music and God. -Jennifer Hamm & Lisa Keylon

We sincerely thank you for your generosity this past year. Faith Giving and expectations were a little more difficult to estimate, but expenses were controlled where possible. Our research uncovered income from Memorial Garden space sales had been going to VPF instead of VPC for many years. This counted as income in 2016, and some of the money was used to supplement Faith Giving. In addition VPF income to VPC was $138K. The VPF Legacy Dinner provided for three Fund the Need capital projects again this year totaling $65K. VALLEY PRESBYTERIAN FOUNDATION In 2016, Valley Presbyterian Foundation reached $3 million in cumulative financial support for VPC for mission activity and campus and building maintenance. Specific missions were: 1) music program funding including the magnificent “Mostly Messiah” concert in December; 2) scholarships totaling $19,000 for VPC college students to defray expenses; 3) scholarships for a youth mission trip to Washington, D.C., 4) travel to support for six orphanages in Malawi, Africa, and 5) VPF’s Fund the Need program funded new chapel-area landscaping, McDonald Drive signage, and refurbishment of the sanctuary-area rest rooms. The Foundation is preparing for the 2017 Legacy Dinner. Starting last September, Co-Chairs Kathy Arner, Candy Unruh, and Bev Cooper-with a Committee of 14 church members-began meeting to host the gala “Step into the Future,” scheduled for March 31, 2017 at The Scottsdale Resort at McCormick Ranch. As this year’s President of VPF, I am very proud of the working relationship between Valley Presbyterian Church and the Foundation. For example, this year we began a concerted effort to increase the membership of our Legacy Society which stands currently at 123 members who have made the Foundation a beneficiary in their will or estate plan. Reverend Joynt has been instrumental in the creation of the “60 for 60” program which seeks to add 60 new members to the Legacy Society in this year of the church’s Sixtieth Anniversary. The Foundation ended 2016 with $4.7 million under management with $50,000 in new money this year. Also this year included a transition when Della Berg, Foundation Administrator, left after three years. We are delighted with her replacement, Charlee Turner, who can be reached at 480-991-6424 ext168. -George Bosworth

Grace and peace to you, we are so thankful to be celebrating our first year of ministry at Valley Presbyterian Church. Our first official day with all of you was March 1, 2016 and from that very first day we have been welcomed, uplifted, and loved. The congregation and leadership at Valley Presbyterian Church embodies Christ’s care, and we are so thankful to serve our Lord with each one of you. The ministry of Discipleship and Spiritual Growth is a call to know Jesus Christ more. This call is manifest in so many ways: worship, studying God’s word, prayer, and fellowship. This past year, we have had the privilege of studying God’s word and seeing God’s hand at work in revealing who God is as we lead worship and preach. We have claimed the promises of God’s word in counseling those who are grieving and officiating services of worship to remember loved ones and to praise God for the gift of eternal life. During the week, we have gathered together to look at the origins of faith and finding Jesus in the book of Genesis, the gospels, and we look forward to finding Jesus in the significance of the cross and in the book of Exodus! The prayer ministry is an essential foundation of Christian ministry, and we are so thankful for all those who regularly pray for members, ministries, and leadership of VPC. We feel those prayers guiding us and uplifting us. The weekly House of Prayer emails have been an opportunity to pause for a moment, look at a particular aspect of prayer, and then pray during the week. The call to being a disciple of Jesus Christ must happen in community and with a commitment to life together. We are encouraged and thankful to see growing communities in the Women’s and Men’s bible studies and retreats. This year, The Marriage Course, the Alpha Course, and the Day of Discipleship brought together men and women to know Jesus more in everyday life. We focused on story: God’s story in Scripture, God’s story in our relationships and families, God’s story in who Jesus Christ is, and God’s story in how we live everyday of our lives.

Over this next year, we greatly anticipate the next chapter of God’s story at Valley Presbyterian Church. We deeply appreciate the work of the Discipleship Committee, Pastor Kelsey Woodruff, and the entire staff at VPC. May our great God be revealed more clearly and glorified more dearly through the ministry of Discipleship and Spiritual Growth!

Have you ever wondered what the “perfect” church looks like? I’ve let my mind wander thinking about this and find myself gravitating to the early church described in Acts 2. It was a gathering where believers devoted themselves to the teaching of the apostles; they sold their possessions to insure everyone had what they needed; they ate meals together and praised God… and God added to their numbers daily. Wow… had I found the perfect church? With a bit more reading, I quickly came to the conclusion that even the early church had its challenges. But what stood out to me was their desire to learn more about Jesus and to put into action their new found faith. Putting our faith in God into action leads to lives being changed; it’s a critical aspect of healthy churches and it’s the story I’ve seen so many people at VPC engaged in this past year.

PASTOR DAVID TURNER

Deacon ministries and others in our congregation have prepared communion every month, coordinated and delivered flowers weekly to our elderly, visited families with newborn children, and blessed our staff with special luncheons. Our Hospital Lay Chaplains had over 175 visits to those in hospitals and rehabilitation centers and hundreds of meals have been prepared and taken to individuals and families in times of crisis. Our Memorial Reception Team blessed thousands of people at 24 memorials in 2016, and care-packages were sent to our college students and military on several occasions. Grief Support Ministry cared for 17 people who’d suffered loss. Stephen Ministry has now trained 41 gifted caregivers serving over 40 care-receivers through a ministry of listening and companionship. Mental Health Ministry grew as we hosted a workshop entitled “Mental Health and God” with 50 people from our church and local community participating. We helped raise support to educate our community about Mental Health at the 2016 NAMI Walk in downtown Phoenix. Additionally, we offered a study about Patrick Kennedy’s book A Common Struggle. We began “Pet Pause” where certified dogs and their owners spend time blessing people in their homes, hospitals, and rehabilitation clinics with a wagging tail and a wonderful conversation. This past year has been busy, but the joy of that busyness is that God is using so many at VPC to bring hope and encouragement in the name of Christ. Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. 2016 was a year of celebration at VPC! Our 60th Anniversary service stands out as a special moment. Former pastors Rev. Dr. Tom Erickson and Rev. Dr. Woody Garvin shared inspirational messages, our musicians played and sang to God’s glory, and we saw the generations gather in thanksgiving and in praise. We honored 130 members who have been at our church for more than 40 years. As a new pastor here, it was thrilling to listen to the stories of sacrifice and service that have ennobled six decades together. We welcomed the dynamic Meghan Gottfredson as the new Director of Valley Day School, connecting our preschool work more closely to our growing ministries to young mothers and to children. We learned that Jordan and Gabby Gustafson have taken a new call in Washington, DC and have initiated a new search for a full-time Director of Student Ministry. Rev. Dave Turner led our pastoral care efforts with sensitivity and faithfulness, initiating a new visitation ministry using dogs called Pet Pause Ministry. Rev. Mike and Rev. Kelly Nieto launched new classes in Adult Discipleship and made a great start as teachers and spiritual leaders. Rev. Kelsey Woodruff was ordained at the end of 2015 to serve us as our Parish Associate, and she blessed our outreach to women through Bible studies and retreats. Our website improved dramatically in terms of content, traffic, and visuals. And we initiated a church-wide relationship with RightNow Media to bring Christian educational resources to every member. The Campus Master Plan Committee received Session approval to engage The Jones Group to develop a long-range plan for our buildings and site that will help unify our congregation and our campus. Our Session approved, with congregational input, a ministry plan, “Standing Together for Tomorrow,” that focused on seven areas of our life and work, outlining challenges, opportunities, and initiatives. It will be exciting to see these plans develop in 2017! As I write this on January 23rd, I have just finished welcoming 23 new members into our church family yesterday, and it was a reminder of the biggest personal joy for me this past year— getting to know, more deeply, our membership. Your stories of faith and growth, your enthusiasm for ministry and service, have made every hour I spent working this past year precious and rewarding. 2017 will be an exciting year of growth at VPC—I can’t wait to see what God will do.
