WOMEN’S MINISTRY

Women’s Ministry at VPC is a vital, growing, intergenerational ministry: from young moms to older saints, women’s studies and events bring women from every age and stage. Every month, the ladies of VPC spend over 74 hours in bible study, and twice a year (The Women’s Breakfast and the Retreat) the women gather to hear speakers, to get to know one another, to take Communion together, and to pray. I am truly blessed and inspired by every woman at VPC, you each bring incredible gifts and joy to me and to each other! This next year, we will be sending out a survey asking what the women of VPC would like to receive and to give in women’s ministry, what should we try and how to invite friends. Most importantly, we want to take a look at the spiritual needs of the women in our congregation and look at how we can lift one another up in faith, hope, and love. -Pastor Kelly Nieto Presbyterian Women PW provides monthly Bible studies. We are grateful to Kelly Nieto who continues to give us an informative “Bible Study Briefing” to prepare for the circle meetings. Monthly programs planned by Gloria Murison and Beve Lane are presented after a delicious luncheon prepared by Sandra Gonzales. We have learned about domestic violence, Ladies of the Canyons, women in the Arizona Women’s Hall of Fame, and Family Promise along with the Christmas program presented by Saguaro High School Chorus. Jennifer Hamm and Julia Joynt did a fabulous performance of love songs. We had a fashion show benefitting the Silo. Sunshine Acres was presented with a check so each child could pick out clothes. Each time Family Promise was on campus, we prepared and served a meal. Donations to the Thank and Birthday offerings totaled $892. We supported World Wide Missions ($1,600), Presbytery of the Grand Canyon and the Synod ($600), and All for Girls ($200) among others. -Wandie Hulick, Moderator

PRAYER

Last year, during the Lent season, a group of about 20 VPC members and friends took a walk through the prayer garden at Canaan in the Desert. One of the sisters led us through each station, and at the end, as we were preparing to leave, the sisters had gathered together for their evening prayer. As they sang “Great is Thy Faithfulness,” we all listened and were filled with that moment of inexplicable joy and peace. We know that the great God of the universe is the only true source of lasting joy and peace, every month the House of Prayer prays for VPC members and ministries, spreading God’s presence and power. Over this next year, look for the House of Prayer to be re-launched with new members’ names, and for more opportunities for VPC members to join together in prayer! -Pastor Kelly Nieto

MEN’S MINISTRY

I would not be the man I am today without the influence of many great men in my life. I think of my father and big brother, my pastor and youth director, professors and mentors, all of which had a unique imprint on my life. How fortunate I feel to be a part of the men’s ministry at VPC. It is a ministry where men are investing in each other’s life. It is a place to grow in the discipleship process through mutual support and encouragement. It is a place where men can work together to have a special influence in the lives of those that God has called us to serve. I am excited to see where God will lead us next year and all that can be accomplished when men come together to serve our Lord. -Chris Woodard

MISSION

Every day the power of relationships is displayed at VPC. How blessed we are to serve a God of relationships. A God that loves so much that God would care to be in relationship with us. Through that powerful relationship not only do we receive the transforming love of Christ but we are forever changed to share that love with others. It brings me great joy and excitement to witness people from VPC as they open up their lives and enter into relationships with people that only our great God could orchestrate. Real people’s lives are being changed by real people. Thanks you for being a church filled with real people that would dare to open up your life to engage in relationships that demonstrate the transforming love of God. -Chris Woodard 47th Annual Cooks’ Tour: Hands Across the City, Arms Around the World Hundreds of people came to VPC for Presbyterian Women’s major fund raiser—the 47th Annual Cooks’ Tour. Funding from last year’s event was presented to 15 different organizations both local and worldwide. Highlights from this year included: Gifts of the Heart Christmas cards painted by Tom and Dick Van Arsdale benefiting MentorKids, Medical Benevolence Foundation, and Ministry of Hope. Two fabulous homes were on the Home Tour, and of course, there was a unique “watch dog” created by the very talented Miriam Green. It takes hundreds of hands to make the day a fabulous experience. Sandra Gonzales and her wonderful family prepared a delicious luncheon served by 20 cheerful students from Coronado High School. There were many treasures to be found in Crafters, Kitchen Treasures, Tiffany West, and the Silent Auction. The hospitality was extended throughout the campus, but never more clearly than at the Complimentary Tea Table. Many thanks to our gracious and hardworking staff and volunteers that are truly His Hands in the world. -Jeanne Campo & Wandie Hulick

CHILDREN

The VPC Children’s Ministry staff is blessed with and cherishes our time with children, families and volunteers. Our wonderful volunteer team is constantly striving to improve the ways they share the Gospel message making it more personal and memorable. Our goal is to see all of our children develop a faith that sticks throughout their life, and to support our parents as they guide and teach these little ones. It begins in our nursery where children learn that ‘Jesus loves them’ and continues through elementary school as children grow to understand just how much ‘Jesus loves them’ and develop a personal attachment to our Lord and Savior. “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them.” Matthew 19:14

VALLEY DAY SCHOOL It has been a banner year for Valley Presbyterian’s Day School. At Valley Day we’ve seen tremendous growth in every area of our ministry – from an increase in our total number of children enrolled to additional teachers and classroom space. We praise God for His provision. We are grateful to be His hands and feet as we serve the families of our Day School community and share His love with our students on a daily basis. -Meghan Gottfredson

STUDENT MINISTRY Student Ministries at VPC is an exciting place to be. Summer 2017 our Junior High students served in San Diego and our High School Students worked in San Francisco. In both cities, students served the homeless and those in need. Students found themselves outside their comfort zone, but they rose to the occasion and it was wonderful to see them grow as individuals and in their faith. Last year we were blessed by the leadership of Joseph Parisi who made the jump from intern to full-time Director of Student Ministries. At the end of 2017, Joseph decided to focus full time on his studies and end his time at Valley Presbyterian Church. Joseph touched many students’ lives. He will be missed, and we wish him well in his next adventures. Looking ahead we are excited to see what God has planned for students at VPC in 2018. We look forward to nurturing our students’ faith, growing and pouring into our volunteer team, and supporting the parents and families of our students. -Tina Gilbreath

WORSHIP, MUSIC, & ARTS

When we come together to worship at VPC, we come to honor God with our lives, our talents, and our resources, and to bring glory to God. VPC is passionate about engaging and involving its members and our community in activities and opportunities to see God in worship, music, and the arts. This year we hosted 10 concerts as a part of our Concert Series, all under the guidance of Jennifer Hamm, Minister of Music. We tried new things, like a Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Chorus and Youth Choir, which both have added special music to many of our worship services. In conjunction with the Discipleship Committee, we have added weekly times for reflection and prayer during Advent. A preschool age was added to EXPLORERS! and was a huge success. We welcomed accomplished organist Julia Tucker, who has enhanced our worship in many ways. VPCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Worship Band, under the leadership of Travis Kingma, released a short CD of original songs, which enables us to reach out to friends and potential new members with a taste of what our 10:30 service is like. Funding for this project came from the Kurz Music & Arts Endowment in the VPC Foundation. Our Worship Committee, under the direction of Session Elders, meets monthly to ensure all services run smoothly, and improvements are continually addressed and incorporated. Special events, such as serving monthly communion for all services, conducting baptisms, welcoming new members, and celebrating significant milestones of our members, all happen within the context of our regular worship services. Our faithful Ushers have been present at nearly every worship, music, and arts events VPC has offered, and we were excited to increase their presence and training this year. ENCORE UNIVERSITY

Encore University is all about Adventures in Lifelong Learning for students and for the Encore Team! Encore was created to serve and engage our VPC senior community. “What would the best possible senior program look like here at VPC,” was the question and the challenge. A committee of 12 researched churches across the US and brainstormed all kinds of senior program concepts resulting in a “college” model as a great platform for service, welcome to VPC, and building relationships through the process of learning and exploring Adventures in Lifelong Learning. What students have found at Encore University is a place to be and to stay active as they age and retire, Theological studies deepening their faith and understanding of God’s word, study of subjects they never attempted earlier in life, fun expressions of creativity through art, memoir writing, exercise, and the culinary arts. Gloria Diefenderfer is so thankful for Encore University. For three years she attended Kiki Swanson’s course on how to write personal memories. Without this experience her children and grandchildren would not have her legacy to pass on; especially her story about peanut butter. “Encore has been a God send for my mom. After her husband died, it was so hard for her to create a new life of activities. She loves coming to Encore; it has given her a new purpose.” -Anonymous The Encore Team has found that we are meant to step outside ourselves and answer Jesus’ call to serve and to be his disciples. We express this through volunteering, extending a warm welcome, using our teaching gifts, recruiting and administrating, and letting every student who steps onto the VPC/Encore University campus know they matter to God. We are blessed to be part of the VPC family and purpose. -Encore University Team

DIVORCE RECOVERY

In 2017, the Divorce Recovery Ministry has experienced growth in participation as it offers a significant experience for many people who are traveling this path and need encouragement, insight, and the faithful support of others traveling on the same road. While this ministry has blessed a number of people in our own congregation, it has reached out into our surrounding community with the healing presence of Jesus Christ. For a second year, we’ve been blessed by the leadership of Anna Kohls, a licensed Associate Marriage and Family Therapist, who has facilitated two seven-week programs with one in the winter/ spring and the other beginning in the fall. The curriculum focuses on topics such as: conflict; why some marriages succeed and others fail; the five love languages; healthy and unhealthy relationships; grief and loss; forgiveness; boundaries; and hope for the holidays to mention only a few. Along with the topics that can adjust depending on the needs of the class, this course also offers a safe place to talk and process the feelings and experiences as well as a place for healing prayer. -Pastor David Turner

DISCIPLESHIP

Discipleship and Spiritual Growth at VPC is about helping each one of us learn more about who Jesus is and grow to be more like Him. Our committee works with Wednesday night classes, Encore University, Women’s Ministry, Men’s Ministry, Presbyterian Women, MOPs, Prayer Ministry, and Day of Discipleship. As we plan and teach and pray, we know that God is creating sacred spaces where each of us can encounter Him. God doesn’t expect perfection from us; God simply asks us to be willing to be transformed. He asks us to bring our fears and failings and confusions so that He can renew us over and over again. God also asks us to bring our strengths to Him to be used for His glory. As we look back over the past year and look forward to the next year, Discipleship and Spiritual Growth at VPC will continue to create those spaces and times to help you to get to know the almighty God, and to show Him to others! -Pastors Kelly & Mike Nieto

VALLEY PRESBYTERIAN FOUNDATION

In its forty plus years, VPF has built a 6.3 million dollar trust. In 2017, $141,000 was distributed to VPC from our unrestricted funds. In addition, the Foundation raised over $60,000 dollars to replace appliances in the Landes Kitchen, funded the purchase of new portable stage components for Landes and contributed to the Kilgore Chapel stained glass preservation project. Gifts to the Foundation this year amounted to $1,257,277.38. This was made possible, in large part, by the estate of Legacy Society member Barbara Patterson. Our mission activities this year included awarding 12 academic scholarships. Since 2010, 53 VPC members have received one or more scholarships. VPF funded Music and Arts programs including special concerts open to the public, a contemporary music CD and music video, and partial funding for the upgrading of the Sanctuary organ. During the past year, several concerts were underwritten by the Foundation. VPF continues to assist in funding travel and program needs for on-going mission activity, such as travel expenses for Stephen Ministry training and mission trips for youth and for Malawi volunteers. VPF maintains the Memorial Garden, which provides a resting place for over 800 members. Now in its tenth year, The Legacy Society has more than 120 members. Our Legacy Dinner for 2017 produced a net income of approximately $139,000 and contributed $78,746 for the Foundation’s General Fund. The Foundation wishes to hear from our church membership. We want to be part of the financial success of VPC. Please share how you believe the Foundation can best serve the needs and goals of our church. FINANCE & OPERATIONS

One of the main responsibilities of the Finance and Operations Committee is to account for funds that you, the congregation, pledge, tithe, and donate. Thank you! We are also responsible for keeping the operation of the church running smoothly. This has been a great year in both areas. First, we ended the year with a small surplus. We thank you for your faithful support, and we thank the Session for approving a balanced budget for 2018. A complete financial report is set forth on the pages that follow. In addition, our outside auditors, Mayer Hoffman McCann, will be preparing the 2017 audited financials for Valley Presbyterian Church and Affiliates, which should be available by the end of May 2018. This year saw a major change in the operation of the campus. The Lord brought us an experienced facilities manager in John Pelton. John understands the rules and responsibilities of operating 80,000 square feet of buildings on 10 acres of campus. He immediately identified many safety shortcomings, coordinating safety inspections and repairs that were long overdue. We are transitioning away from utilizing outside landscape and cleaning contractors and are hiring in-house; Linda Hendriks has joined the facilities team, which also includes Will McGaugh, with primary emphasis on cleaning, and we will be adding one more custodian. These changes will result in a savings to the Church of about $20,000, while at the same time providing a cleaner and more beautiful campus. We cannot end the year without thanking Fred Fetters, Kris Williams, Dick Lockwood, David Joynt and the other members of F&O who each so faithfully attended the meetings and freely gave of their time and talent. -Sam Kelsall

BOY SCOUT TROOP 441

Boy Scouts of America Troop 441 was established at Valley Presbyterian Church 50 years ago. In 2017. Three Scouts obtained Eagle rank and the troop earned numerous merit badges. Grace and peace to you all, we are so thankful for this past year of serving the congregation at VPC, and we look forward to what God will do in us and through us in the year to come!

Most importantly, we would like to say thank you to all of you for the many prayers, meals, and encouraging words shared with us during Kelly’s health crises in the summer and fall. We are grateful for a congregation that cares so much about each other and the staff. Thank you to all of you who stepped in and helped, taking over large events, and also taking the day-to-day ministry needs off our plate so we could take time off to rest and recover. Every night, we would take the stack of cards we had received that day from the congregation, read through them together, and pray the prayers you were praying for us. We will never be able to fully express our gratitude, thank you for modeling what it means to be the “hands and feet” of Jesus Christ. The ministry of Discipleship and Spiritual Growth is a call to know Jesus Christ more. It begins with us, following the pastoral charge to stay close to Jesus and listen to the Holy Spirit. This past year, we have had the privilege of studying God’s word and seeing God’s hand at work in revealing who God is as we lead worship and preach. We have had the great honor of being present in moments of grief and joy: officiating services of worship to remember loved ones and to praise God for the gift of eternal life, and also joining with couples as they begin the spiritual journey of becoming one. We have visited with those who are homebound or in the hospital, praying for God’s comfort and peace. During the week and at special events, we have gathered together to learn from the stories of courageous Christians, study God’s word together, strengthen marriages, encourage parents, and take time of spiritual retreat and prayer. The call to being a disciple of Jesus Christ must happen in community and with a commitment to life together. Over this next year, we anticipate even more moments of growing closer to Jesus and learning to hear the Holy Spirit’s still, small voice with the congregation at VPC. We deeply appreciate the work of the Session, committees, and the entire staff at VPC. “It’s time for your annual physical.” I’m not sure how many of you like to hear those words, much less get excited about going to your doctor for all the tests. We often adjust ourselves to the aches and pains we feel in the course of the year and despite not feeling as well as we did a year ago… we continue. The thought of an annual physical is simply an unwanted interruption. Sometimes this hesitancy to engage in an “annual physical” can be seen in our ministries as well.

For Congregational Care, this past year was an opportunity to do an “annual physical.” We celebrated the areas of ministry that are healthy and made the necessary changes in others to promote health and growth. We celebrated the accomplishments of the Deacon’s Lay Hospital Chaplains who visited in excess of 180 people in hospitals, rehab clinics and hospice centers; the Memorial Reception Team served at over 30 memorials; the Communion Prep Team prepared communion through the course of the year; and 144 floral deliveries to our at-home friends to mention only a few endeavors of the Deacons. 2017 also welcomed needed changes to the Tasty Spoon Ministry, which shifted to only preparing fresh meals; the Deacons created an “After-Care” Ministry that provides follow-up contact to people released from area hospitals and rehab clinics to make sure they’re cared for. The Deacon’s Fund adjusted the parameters of what the Deacons ministry provides and at expanded our care-giving by networking with local community resources that can better address the complex needs of those seeking help. Our Mental Health Ministry continued to grow by providing both the NAMI Basics and NAMI Family to Family classes, supported the October NAMI Walk, offered a “Coping with the Holidays” workshop and “Wired that Way” class, and encouraged people to participate in the Annual Behavioral Health Conference. Our Stephen Ministers continued to provide care for those in need of a listening ear and have expanded the scope of their leadership. Pet Pause teams made visits to Westminster Village and individual homes and at HonorHealth Osborn Hospital. Grief Share continues to be a safe place for those who’ve experienced the death of a loved one and Grief Support helpings people in their healing journey. Dinner for Eight continues to be a vital ministry to connect people at VPC. Our fall workshop, “Cancer: Navigating the Journey” proved to be inspiring for many of the people who attended. This past year was an opportunity to evaluate and make healthy changes in the Congregational Care Ministry and take the next step to expand our ministries to the glory of God. “Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Annual reports have key statistics and offer a compilation of facts and figures. They increase our transparency and allow our congregation to see clearly and to evaluate our efforts. But an annual report is also an occasion for remembering and celebrating the life God is creating in our midst. The rush of the next obligation can prevent us from taking grateful stock of all the blessings we have experienced.

• In 2017, for the first time in a generation, VPC had a net gain in membership as many gifted men, women, and youth added their capabilities to our Kingdom efforts. • Our Valley Day School grew by 25% and welcomed 50 new families, initiating Chapel services and integrating their work with ours.

The addition of Julia Tucker, as Assistant Music Minister, has added great creativity to our worship resources. Travis Kingma and our band released a terrific album of original songs, with the support of the VPC Foundation, to enhance our reach into our community.

Our budget has moved from a deficit pattern to stability and to surplus during the last three years. The VPC Foundation received a million dollar bequest from Barbara Patterson, added more than $700,000 to its funds through astute management, disbursed dollars crucial to our mission and ministry, and raised the resources to redo our kitchen.

The Master Plan is complete! It is visible in a new model that currently sits on the first floor of the Administration Building. The designs have exceeded every one of my expectations and have delighted our Master Plan Committee and Session. Last year, we asked Jones Studio to envision a single primary worship space, a new heart for our campus and a greatly improved facility for families, for hospitality, and for outreach. It is a transformational plan —thank you to all the hundreds of members, young and old, who shared ideas and shaped priorities. Now it gets even more exciting as you will get to see the details of the design and the proposed phases. Everyone wants to know how much we will do and when we will start. And so you can pray for our Session as we measure costs, congregational passions, and financial capacity during the first months of 2018.

Nothing is more critical for VPC than reaching the rising generation of disciples and leaders. The departure of our energetic Student Ministries Director, Joseph Parisi, to pursue his undergraduate degree at GCU full time in 2018 has provided a chance to rethink the structure of our youth ministry.

As we enhance our connection between our growing work with children and families and our work with youth and young adults, Tina Gilbreath’s job will grow and be retitled from Director of Children’s Ministry to Director of Family Ministry. She will communicate and connect with all the parents we minister to and help with planning and volunteer recruitment across the age range—from 1 to 22. This support will be crucial for the new leader of our youth ministries, whom we are currently seeking. We are looking for a director/pastor with seminary training and strong church experience who can grow and deepen our efforts with middle school, high school, and college youth. Please pray for Elders Susie Huseth and Darrah MacDougall, Elder-to-be Doug Eaton, and Boots Dunlap who will lead our search. Thank you to Chris Woodard for helping organize our program until we find our new leader.

We welcomed the amazing John Pelton onto our team. His faith, great energy, and unusually broad skills in repair and restoration are the perfect complement to the large capacity of Will McGaugh. Will added to the baby explosion on our staff with the arrival of Grace— congratulations to Will and Rachael! We said goodbye to Paul McNutt in late 2017 and welcomed an excellent third contributor to our facilities crew, Randy Lewis. He has strong experience and capabilities. Additionally, Linda Hendricks joined the team, with an emphasis on cleaning. Welcome them when you see these two team members!

The remarkable Kris Bahr finally got her part-time assistant, LaRene Jennings,to help her with all of her diverse responsibilities in finance, operations, and record-keeping.

Praise God! Kelly and Mike Nieto came through some major health challenges this year. At this year’s Annual Meeting, we are fine tuning their shared pastoral call. They moved from one shared position in Discipleship and Spiritual Growth (DSG) to two full-time positions so Mike could lead Encore University. With two small children, this has proven to be quite a challenge, so using the Goldilocks’ Principle, we will be setting out a position that is the equivalent of 1-1/2 time. Kelly will lead DSG, and Mike will assist Dave Turner in pastoral care, with an emphasis on visitation. All the Encore courses and advertising are set for semesters two and three, and Becky Bennett will help Shelby Trimaloff administer that program in the winter and spring.

I write this prior to Christmas 2017, and you are reading it toward the end of January 2018. It will already be out of date! Just in the intervening time, there will have been more items to share, more moments of care and compassions, more instances of grace.
