january —may spring 2023 VALLEY PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

Dear Friends,

Welcome to 2023! Where will you find connection and community throughout this year? It is our hope and prayer that this magazine helps you identify the wishes and whispers God is sending your way to grow deeply in His love.

For families, we have opportunities to partner with you as parents.

For those in need, in crisis, or dealing with loss, VPC can come alongside you to provide comfort and help seek God’s peace.

If you are hungry to learn, there are classes and studies to dive into, to increase the depth of your faith.

If your heart breaks for the marginalized in our city and around the globe, this magazine highlights ways to serve and volunteer.

I don’t know all the wishes God has for you in 2023, but if you take a few minutes reading all ways VPC is doing God’s work, you will find something that will stretch, comfort, and inspire you.

Blessings,

Valley Presbyterian Foundation

Sunday Worship

Worship Safely

We are encouraged by the high vaccination rates at VPC, but with continued concern over COVID variants, we want to emphasize that anyone who wants or needs to wear a mask should feel free to do so at worship or any of our programs. We love to see you in worship and on campus!

8AM, CHAPEL

This unique and expressive worship experience is found in VPC’s breathtaking Chapel. The Valley Singers vocal ensemble and organ provide music for this service, along with traditional liturgical elements.

9AM, SANCTUARY & LIVESTREAM

VPC’s first sanctuary service includes music, prayer, space for kids, preaching, scripture, and an emphasis on community. Music is commonly led by VPC’s Chancel Choir and accompanied by our organ.

10:30AM, SANCTUARY & LIVESTREAM

Worship at 10:30AM contains many of the same elements as 9AM. Music is commonly led by VPC’s worship band with drums, guitar, piano, and bass.

Whether you decide to attend a specific service because of the time or musical style, you will find space to hear God’s Spirit and respond through Christ-centered worship to God’s acts of salvation and ongoing transformation in the world.

AWAKEN CAFÉ, OPEN 8:30AM-NOON

We invite you to connect with the VPC community before or after worship at Awaken! Proceeds from beverage purchases support VPC’s Mission Partners locally and globally. This is a great place to spend time with friends and family; kids can play in the Awaken Plaza and the indoor/outdoor seating provides a comfortable place to relax all year long.

With Dr. Jeffrey Weima, Calvin Theological Seminary Wednesdays, January 4, 11, & 18 6-7PM, Sanctuary & Livestream From seasoned scripture readers to those with very little knowledge, this class is for everyone! Is there a right way to read the Bible? What guidelines should we use to interpret scripture? Can we confidently know what God is saying in His Word? Dr. Jeffrey Weima will help answer these questions in an interesting, informative, and entertaining way. This series will likely change the way you read and understand God’s Word!

Let’s Do a Bible Study!

With Pastor Chris Woodard Wednesdays, January 25, February 1, 8, & 15 6-7PM, B106

We will walk together through the book of Mark. If you’re familiar with the book or if this is your first time in a Bible Study, we invite you to come and see what God is doing in our community through the power of His Word.

Finding Joy

With Dr. Phil Eaton, President Emeritus, Seattle Pacific University Wednesdays, January 25, February 1, 8, & 15 6-7PM, Sanctuary

There is a lot of talk about how to be happy, but what we really long for is joy. Joy is deeper, more lasting, satisfying, and life changing. Complete joy is what Jesus promises us, yet we are often not joyful people. We will explore the path to joy through Scripture, stories, art, and literature. We will learn how the ancient spiritual practices: prayer, reading scripture, silence, solitude, and worship lead us toward joyful lives.

Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. This community is primarily people born 1955—1975, with many born outside of that range; however, all are welcome! We strive to be a Christian community that embrace and encourage each other as we follow Christ on the path He sets before us. After every Sunday we send an email that summarizes class, gives updates about other opportunities at VPC, gives space for prayers, and provides a gentle thought for the week.

Kaleidoscope Classes

Sundays Starting January 8 9AM, Room B106

The Jesus of the Old Testament

January 8—February 19 (No class February 5)

We associate Jesus with the New Testament, but Christ’s theological foundation came from the Old Testament. Understanding Jesus requires understanding why God came to us in the form of a human, which comes from the pages of the Old Testament. We’ll explore how both Testaments integrate and why Jesus said that He came to fulfill the Law and Prophets of the Old Testament.

Lenten Study: Sin, Sacrifice, and Salvation February 26—April 2

What happened on the cross? Why was the cross necessary? What does it mean to sin and what does it mean that we are sinners? We will dig into the relationship between sin, Christ’s sacrifice on the cross, and the resulting salvation for those who place their faith in the Messiah. We will gain a better understanding of the singular miracle of the cross and why it made possible for each of us to have an Easter morning.

Vanishing Grace by Philip Yancey

April 23—May 21

connect Community Groups

In this RightNow Media video series, esteemed Christian writer and thinker Philip Yancey looks at the disconnect in the modern world where interest in Christianity is dropping while interest in “spirituality” is rising. Many ask: “What’s so good about the Good News?” In this class, Yancey shows the desperate need our world has for grace and how Christians can truly make the gospel Good News again.
