Valley Presbyterian Church August 2017 Volume sixty-two, Number seven

Dear friends, Who started Auburn University at age 15 and graduated at 18? Who holds two masters degrees, in organ and in piano, from Syracuse University and is only 22? Who just accepted our offer to become the new VPC Assistant Minister of Music? The answer to all the questions is Julia Tucker! Julia will be joining our staff in September and will start to make beautiful music on our organs and our pianos on September 10, the very day we begin our new fall series on the parables. We have been blessed once again over these last months by the playing and the creativity of Barbara Johnson—I’ve never been in a setting where we had such talent available in transitions. Music reaches places in our souls that preaching seldom touches, and I can’t wait to see how Jennifer Hamm and Julia Tucker inspire our choir and congregation in the coming years. Please take an opportunity to thank Barbara and welcome Julia.

Arizona, Grand Canyon and deCristo, on August 11 and 12. All of you are invited to the worship time which includes communion, on Saturday August 12 in the Sanctuary at 10AM with Kelly Nieto preaching. You can add your gifts and voice to our celebration. There is a multiplication effect, a shared synergy, a mutual encouragement which greatly increases our individual enthusiasm if we allow it to. Thank you for the many ways you bless others here at Valley, with your own personal acts of generosity, support, and love. On August 13 we will be “Blessing the Backpacks” of youth and children returning to school and commissioning our Sunday School teachers. August 14 is the first day of classes for Valley Day School. Please keep all leaders, teachers, and volunteers who are mentoring rising generations in your prayers. Last fall we celebrated 60 years of ministry. This 61st year, I believe, will be one of our best. Blessings in the name of Christ,

The dedication and gifts of our staff motivate my faith and energy every day—and three or four times on Sunday! VPC will be hosting the two Presbyteries of

Who We Are: Telling God’s story Every story of Jesus Christ becoming real in people’s lives is unique. God works through our experiences and relationships to create a journey specific to our circumstances. At Valley Presbyterian Church, we want to hear those stories, and we want to tell those stories. Starting this month, the Valley Vine will start undergoing some exciting changes! We are working to create more space to tell stories about how God is at work in the lives on His people at VPC. What’s different? To start, we’ve added four pages to this monthly magazine, to be able to deliver more content to our community. You’ll also notice more specific stories from VPC staff and others involved in our ministries. Additional space has been given to ministry areas you may not know as much about, we encourage you to check these out! You may notice less overall space given for specific events, this is intentional. The Valley Vine is a place where you can sit down and go deep month by month. Not to worry, though! The weekly Focus, given out at church on Sundays, covers almost everything going on, and VPC’s Ministry Brochures cover every event, class, and program over a span of months.

Storytelling at Vacation Bible School

Listening to how God wants to use ink and paper to reach His people is an ever-evolving process, and we want to know what you think! Feel free to email communications@vpc.church with your thoughts and feedback on our new layout. We value your partnership with us as we work together with the Lord to transform lives.

Mission & Service

Chris Woodard, Mission Director: chrisw@vpc.church

Yavapai Elementary School, VPC’s next school mission partner

Yavapai Elementary Teacher Supply Through Wednesday, August 2 Donate today: vpc.church/mission

Even though it is still a hundred and fifteen degrees outside, summer is over for many of us- yes, it is time to go back to school!

Yavapai Elementary School is one of the most underfunded schools in SUSD. We have the opportunity to provide classroom materials for the teachers and students creating a successful classroom environment for all those involved.

Valley Presbyterian Church is passionate about investing in the next generation and making sure that children in our community and city have the opportunity to do their best in school. Because of this, we are involved with our local elementary schools and the MentorKids USA after school program. To make sure children have all that they need to start the school year off right, we will be collecting school supplies for Yavapai Elementary School. Yavapai is one of the most underresourced schools in Scottsdale Unified School District, and this opportunity is a wonderful way to bless teachers and students- ensuring that they have the appropriate materials for a successful classroom environment. We will continue to support over fifty children at Navajo Elementary School through the healthy packs program. This program ensures that they most needy of our children have food over the weekend. Please email me with any questions. -Chris Woodard

Volunteer with MentorKids USA Mondays, 3PM, van leaves from VPC It has been partnering with MKUSA for over five years. We will be continuing our support of the MKUSA Promise Neighborhood in South Phoenix this next year. Every Monday we help students with homework and programs they are having for the day. This is a wonderful opportunity to assist and equip the next generation!

Healthy Pack Program: Navajo Elementary School This community effort is led by the Concerned Citizens of Scottsdale, providing weekend food packages to kids in need. Sadly, one out of six people in America are food insecurethey do not know where their next meal will come from. VPC has adopted over 50 children at Navajo Elementary School to ensure that they will have proper meals over the weekend which will help them succeed with their schooling.

Pastor Mike Nieto: miken@vpc.church The importance of a faith community My friends, we truly live in a golden age of connection and communication. Whether through Facebook, Skype, email, text, cell phone, or even good old land lines, we can reach out and reconnect with friends and family thousands of miles away in an instant.

Inquirer Class 6-8PM, August 2, Fireside Room, Dinner provided Sign-up: vpc.church/inquirer Childcare: nursery@vpc.church Have questions about your faith? Wonder what it means to join a church? Interested in becoming a member? We’ve been waiting for you! Contact Pastor Mike for more information.

However, studies consistently show that people feel more and more isolated and lonely. That’s why reaching out and connecting with a church body is such an important step in your walk with Christ. Without community, and the relationships and accountability it brings, it is easy for us to lose our way and to take our eyes off life’s important things.

Jesus tells us that He came, “that we might have life and have it abundantly“! (John 10:10) Can you believe that? God loves you and wants you to live life to the fullest! And we want to help, so please don’t hesitate to reach out to us with anything, we are here to serve and lift you up in any way we can. And if you are new to our family and are interested in more information about VPC please consider attending our next Inquirers class. -Pastor Mike Nieto

Children & Families

Tina Gilbreath, Children’s Ministry Director: tinag@vpc.church

Talking with Children’s Ministry volunteer Jeanine Nesvig Jeanine Nesvig (Sunday School and VBS volunteer) is one of our fabulous team members. She decided to volunteer because, “I Jeanine came to know Jesus as my Savior because of the Easter lesson given to my 5th grade Sunday School class in Rockford, Illinois in 1959.” In addition, she said, “I have four grandchildren and I believe it is important for them to know who Jesus is. Aren’t we all called to share the Gospel with “the greatest in his kingdom?” Serving with the Children’s Ministry team is a positive experience for other reasons as well. Jeanine tells us, “my relationship with God grows as I learn more about him in the stories I teach to the children. I enjoy connecting with others who share my love and concern for the children of VPC. I get to know some pretty terrific kids (the best thing).” VPC Children’s Ministry is looking for more volunteer team members!

Blessing of the Backpacks, Sunday School Volunteer Commissioning, Family Worship, & Summer Lunch Sunday, August 13 Kids, bring your backpacks to receive a special blessing for the school year. Help us recognize and bless our volunteers, as well. Children 3 years old and up will worship with their family. Nursery will be available for infants and toddlers. Then, join us for lunch as we get ready for a new school year!

Fall Sunday School Starts Sunday, August 20 Sunday School registration: vpc.church/children Please reregister your children for the year. From infants through high school, help us get the information we need! Let Tina and Marie know if you have questions.

Men’s Ministry

Chris Woodard, Men’s Ministry Director: chrisw@vpc.church

Men, come on an adventure! I am honored and excited to step into this new role as Director of Men’s Ministry at VPC. Men, we have been called to be imitators of Christ, but what does that look like in our jobs, families, friendships, and life? This year we will be journeying together and supporting each other about how we can live out the life God has called us to in all that we do. We will begin the fall with our fourth annual men’s retreat. We will be heading up to UCYC in Prescott for a weekend of fellowship, discipleship (which for men means; paintball, rock climbing, bonfires, and napping) and worship. Retreating is a great discipline to incorporate into the rhythm of life and I can’t think of a better way to kick of our year than retreating with you!

Men’s Retreat September 29-October 1 UCYC, Prescott, AZ Cost: $125

Retreating is a wonderful moment to refocus on what is important in our lives. Retreating is hard to work into our busy lives but the discipline of retreating is an important aspect of our Christian Life. Jesus modeled this behavior for us and as imitators of Christ it is important to allow ourselves to get reconnected and refreshed by our God.

Third Tuesday of the Month Breakfast October 17, 6:30AM RSVP by Sunday prior All men are invited to join together the third Tuesday of the month for breakfast at VPC. Gather at 6:30AM and breakfast will begin at 6:45. We will hear testimonies from each other and be focus in on our topic for the month.

I look forward to experiencing life together and discovering ways in which we can support each other to be the men God has called us to be. -Chris Woodard

Care & Support

David Turner, Pastor: davidt@vpc.church

Engaging in ministry with depth When we think of successful ministries in the life of a church we might picture programs that engage large numbers of people. Oftentimes, however, the kind of ministry has a profound impact in a person’s life comes through the in the one-on-one moments we share with another person. When a deacon delivers a bouquet of flowers, shares a kind smile, visits someone in the hospital, brings a hot meal, makes a phone call that says, “You were on my mind and I miss you”; these actions have a huge impact on a person’s life and convey Christ’s love and encouraging presence. One such time for me came in a visit to a wonderful couple in our church, both of whom were facing life threatening issues. When we talked about their fears and questions about God, they began to realize that faith does not exempt them from the difficulties of life. Faith insures them that during difficulty they will not be alone. When we share our lives with others- those are the times that have the greatest impact. -Pastor David Turner

Music

Jennifer Hamm, Minister of Music: jenniferh@vpc.church VPC’s organist blessings In March, we found ourselves suddenly without an organist. Holy Week was just three weeks away and our concert was in six weeks.

I found myself starting to panic until I was comforted by our own Barbara Johnson, who quickly said, “I’ll do whatever you need.” Now, normally, any other church in this predicament would have to find a substitute – an unknown – an outsider that would be “OK” and possibly difficult to work with. However, at VPC we are blessed to have two excellent organists that are fully capable of stepping up! Barbara has played for us almost every Sunday, and her talent and servant leadership, make her a joy to work with. Paul Paige has also stepped up to substitute and help take care of our Chapel Organ. God has provided when VPC had a need in our music ministry, and for this I am grateful.

Chancel Choir Rehearsal Wednesdays starting September 6 7:30PM, Choir Room This is a great time to join our Chancel Choir. We are seeking new members! We rehearse each week and sing each Sunday at the 9AM service. Come share your voice and love for fellowship and the Lord!

After a lot of prayer and searching, God has also provided a new organist for us this fall! Please look forward to the September Vine where you can learn more about our new organist, Julia Tucker. -Jennifer Hamm

A new school year means new friends, new adventures, and new beginnings. This will be my first opportunity to welcome families back to school at VDS, and I’m grateful. I can’t believe I’ve been blessed with the chance to share Jesus with our students, families, and staff on a daily basis! As we welcome new families, new children, and new teachers, we ask for your prayers. Pray that our families make connections and find a strong sense of community at VPC. Pray that our teachers feel valued and encouraged in their ministry. Pray that our children feel safe and loved within our walls.
