SEPTEMBER-DECEMBER 2021
MINISTRY BROCHURE
Welcome to the Ministry Brochure! Identity is a deep concept. Simple in one way, it can be determined by an ID card or a fingerprint, and such measures are enough to O.K. a purchase at Safeway or to unlock an iPhone.
David Joynt Senior Pastor
But in another way, identity is more complex and interesting, for both individuals and their communities. The brochure you are examining illustrates this. It reveals a great deal about the character and priorities of our church. VPC values learning and questions. We cultivate community and friendship. We believe everyone is called to service and witness. We stretch across the generations to grow our faith and deepen our relationships with God and one another. We love the scriptures and we are invested in healing the local and global problems which break God’s heart. We have many gifted artists and musicians who enhance our worship and our praise.
As you read this material, read it as a snapshot of our identity as a community of faith—but don’t stop there. For how you respond to the invitations and possibilities in these pages reveals a great deal about you! Are you longing for a new way to serve? Deeper connections with people? An opportunity to share your story or ask your deepest questions? The identity of people and faith communities is never fixed and static, unless they are dying. Ultimately the identity of VPC depends on you and I—how much we choose to do and be for one another and for God. Your fingerprint is fixed but not your identity in Christ. As you read, consider how can I step forward in my journey to be more like Him?

Worship Safely
We are encouraged by the high vaccination rates at VPC, but with continued concern over the Delta variant, we want to emphasize that anyone who wants or needs to wear a mask should feel free to do so at worship or any of our programs. We love to see you in worship and on campus! Feel free to attend any of our worship services ‑ RSVP is no longer needed on Sunday morning.
New Worship Schedule begins Sunday, September 12
8AM, CHAPEL
We are excited to bring back the unique and expressive worship experience found in the Chapel. The Valley Singers vocal ensemble and organ provide music for this service, along with traditional liturgical elements.
9AM, SANCTUARY & LIVESTREAM
VPC’s first sanctuary service includes music, prayer, space for kids, preaching, scripture, and an emphasis on community. Music is commonly led by VPC’s Chancel Choir and accompanied by our organ.
10:30AM, SANCTUARY & LIVESTREAM
Worship at 10:30AM contains many of the same elements as 9AM. Music is commonly led by VPC’s worship band with drums, guitar, piano, and bass. Whether you decide to attend a specific service because of the time or musical style, you will find space to hear God’s Spirit and respond through Christ-centered worship to God’s acts of salvation and ongoing transformation in the world.
AWAKEN CAFÉ, OPEN 8:30AM-NOON
We invite you to connect with the VPC community before or after worship at Awaken! Proceeds from beverage purchases support VPC’s Mission Partners locally and globally. This is a great place to spend time with friends and family; kids can play in the Awaken Plaza and the indoor/outdoor seating provides a comfortable place to relax all year long.

In our 58th year with 129 students and their families! This year we’ve welcomed three new teachers and one new music teacher to our staff of 16. VDS is a play-based Christian preschool for children 18 months old through age five, August-May. We provide children with a Christian environment and sound educational program, where meaningful relationships develop between home and school, child and teacher, and the world around them.
Do you have a little one ready for preschool or know someone who is in searching for the right school? We’d love to help you navigate the process or answer any questions you might have. Our enrollment is full for the 2021-2022 preschool year, but we always keep a waitlist. Registration for the 20222023 preschool year at VDS will begin in early March. We are offering virtual tours of our school at this time, and we look forward to sharing our preschool in action.
We ask that you pray for us as we begin this new year! Pray for health, for safety, and that our students would see Jesus in all that we do here at school.
We’ve grown into beautiful new classrooms, and we’re excited for all that God has in store for us.

Classes vpc.church/classes
OASIS COMMUNITY WEDNESDAYS, STARTING IN SEPTEMBER Facilitators: Dr. Terry Hargrave & Sharon Hargrave, LMFT
Wednesdays, September 15—October 20 6-7PM, Sanctuary Masks? Vaccinations? The Election? Policing? Sexuality? Wherever we look, we are overwhelmed with conflict, conspiracies, aggression, anger, and even hate. This deadly polarization makes it seem impossible to hang together as a church and as a family. Our goal in this interactive class is to understand our own polarization and the emotional turmoil in our identity and safety that got us to this position. We will learn how to relate and understand the emotional pain of those “on the other side” and how to dialogue without escalating anger and bitterness. Finally, we will learn how—even when we differ dramatically—we can move forward with a oneness that allows each person to contribute the gifts they bring to relationships.
Terry Hargrave, Ph.D. is nationally recognized for his pioneering work with intergenerational families and is the founder of Restoration Therapy. His work has been featured on ABC News’ 20/20, Good Morning America, and CBS Early Morning. Dr. Hargrave is the Evelyn and Frank Freed Professor of Marriage and Family Therapy at Fuller Seminary in Phoenix, Arizona. Sharon Hargrave, LMFT, is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Arizona, California, and Texas. The founder of RelateStrong, Sharon serves Pepperdine University’s Boone Center for the Family as a consultant. She is also an affiliate faculty member in the Marriage and Family Therapy program at Fuller Theological Seminary in Phoenix, Arizona.
TWO SPECIAL CLASSES FROM ADVENTURES IN LEARNING
The Christian Heritage Involved in the Founding of the United States Tuesday, November 2 7-8:30PM (Doors open at 6:30PM), Sanctuary Presented by Senator Jon Kyl
The United States Government was created to protect our God-given rights. If we are, indeed, created in the image of God, and He has endowed us with rights, it follows that we have a sacred duty to preserve and protect those rights. How should we do that? Refreshments available after class.

There is Nothing Wrong with Our Constitutional System That a Little “Civic Virtue” Won’t Cure Tuesday, November 9 7-8:30PM (Doors open at 6:30PM), Sanctuary Presented by Senator Jon Kyl
Some people are disheartened by what they perceive is a dysfunctional federal government, and propose to “streamline” the Constitution as a solution. The structure of our Constitution can continue to enable us to govern ourselves, if we understand and follow it and do so as our Founders intended, by conducting our affairs with civic virtue—that is, the commitment to the greater good, rather than narrow selfish purposes.

OASIS COMMUNITY WEDNESDAYS, STARTING IN OCTOBER The Beatitudes: Living with Christ With Pastor David Turner Wednesdays, October 27—November 17 6-7PM, Chapel
The Sermon on the Mount is the most complete distillation in the New Testament of the value system, ethical standard, and lifestyle of a follower of Jesus—and it all begins with the Beatitudes. In a world that tires of false pretenses and empty promises, the Beatitudes reveal the heart of Jesus and the character of those who follow him. “Blessed are the poor in spirit; Blessed are those who mourn...” Why are these blessings so important? We will examine Matthew’s Gospel and audience and what each of the eight Beatitude character qualities mean.
Men’s Bible Study With Pastor Chris Woodard
Wednesdays, October 27—November 17 6-7PM, B106 (Calvin Center) Men! This will be a great time to connect with other guys. We are enriched by the varied life experiences of the men at VPC, and we are all made stronger from hearing each other’s stories. We look forward to seeing you there!

Jon Kyl served as a Congressman from Arizona from 1987-1995 and as a Senator from 1995–2013 and 2018. He was Senate Minority Whip from 2007 to 2013. Kyl earned bachelor’s (1964) and law (1966) degrees from the University of Arizona where he served as President of the Arizona Law Review. After being admitted to the state bar in 1966, he practiced at a Phoenix law firm for the next 20 years, before running for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.
