A Time for Change Welcome to MYVEGAS MAGAZINE! It’s all about change, and change is good. It’s a part of our natural progress in America. Our kids grow up and go to college, fashion and style evolve every season, new restaurants open almost every week, technology changes every day, and Vegas seems to continually change as fast as all of it. Even the recession cannot stop change. In fact, the recession has promulgated more change than we’ve seen in a long time, and mostly in small business. While large corporations downsize, employees that find themselves out of work, begin to launch their own small businesses and we as a community, enjoy the creativity, enthusiasm, culture and flavor of these new local entrepreneurs. For others, it’s making a career change and going to a specialty school to learn new skills and head in a new direction. If you want to stay ahead of the game, you have to adapt and adjust to whatever changes come your way. And we know that, here at My Vegas Magazine. As local publishers for the last 20 years, you may have picked up a copy of our past publications, including The Best Restaurant Guide, Las Vegas Home & Garden, Today’s Health Magazine, Dine Out, and Las Vegas Woman, among others. To change with the times, we now bring the best of the best of our past publications, into one magazine, for you, the Las Vegas local. My Vegas is all about you, your kids, your life, your restaurants, your shopping, your health, your entertainment, and your Vegas! With our community-based editorial, you’ll find great reading, accompanied alongside of local businesses that compliment each article. We’re always excited and interested to hear your feedback and comments. Tell us what you would like to see and read about, we’ll make it happen. If you think that a certain restaurant should be inside, or a business that has performed exceptional for you, let us know, we’ll make room for them. I personally am very proud to introduce Candice Shaffer, our Managing Editor, and Jessica Lovell-Carro, our Client Manager, as the worker-bees of My Vegas. You may reach out to them and be a part of this dynamic magazine that represents what living in Vegas is all about. I thank all of our team and staff for bringing this dream to life. You can now throw away all those other magazines, and keep My Vegas on your coffee table. It’s all in there, it’s all in one, and it’s all there for you! And be sure to subscribe online for our weekly updates, free subscriptions, more in depth articles, contests, mixers, expos and much more at MyVegasMag.com. Thank you for reading My Vegas, and we hope to see you at one of our live events soon! Enjoy!

It is our pleasure to introduce to you the first issue of My Vegas Magazine! Words cannot explain how honored I am to bring you the new avantgarde My Vegas Magazine. Your one stop source for what’s going on in Las Vegas! From Mt. Charleston to Lake Mead, My Vegas Magazine has you covered. Because I was born and raised in the community of Las Vegas myself, I know our city has much more to offer than it’s reputation of being just an adult playground for locals and visitors alike. Tourists often have their ideas of what Vegas is about, and although we’re called “Sin City” and advertised with the infamous slogan, “What Happens in Vegas stays in Vegas,” locals know what a great community we live in. To many visitors, there are a couple of common misconceptions, one being that we as locals live in hotels on the Strip, and number two, that while Las Vegas is a fun place to visit, it’s not necessarily a place to live and raise a family. We have a wealth of family-oriented events and activities. Our cultural diversity continues to produce talented athletes, artists, small business entrepreneurs and cutting edge technology from our local graduates. We remain in the top ten of the fastest growing cities in the nation and are attracting more and more businesses taking root within our community. We continually reinvent ourselves, expanding our vision far beyond the gaming industry upon which this town was built so many years ago. The beauty of our community is the ability to embrace our rich and notorious past all the while staying excited about our future, which is more promising than ever! With the exponential growth of our city, it’s hard to believe that not long ago, there wasn’t much other than dirt lots on the outskirts of what’s now central Las Vegas. Within the pages of MYVEGAS Magazine, you will find comprehensive articles about our city, and our amazing advertisers with specials you will not find elsewhere. Get informed about our passion, the grandeur of Las Vegas! We thrive to bring this information to the forefront and many faces of the city that doesn’t sleep…or does it?

get a tune up for your body By Carol Ann Weber I remember how my father kept his old ’52 Chevy in impeccable condition, performing regular oil changes and tune-ups like clockwork, even steam-cleaning the engine. If there was even a rattle that didn’t sound right, he made sure it got fixed. But he wasn’t nearly as meticulous when it came to his own body. I used to tease him that he might need an oil change and a tune-up every once in awhile, too! After a session of moderate or intense exercise, that’s exactly what you do for yourself. Although exercise doesn’t actually change any bodily fluids, it does move them around in your body. Your heart pumps harder, your blood circulates in your arteries and veins, your respiration increases and your lymph flows through the spaces around all your cells. Exercise also circulates the synovial fluid inside your joints, which is the lubricant that allows the joint bones to glide over each other without friction, creating freedom of movement. If you stop moving, all the rejuvenating and healthy functions of your body will eventually slow down and then shut down. Use it or lose it! I love to tell the story of two cars. Both were the same make, model and year, both purchased brand new by their owners and driven off the show room floor the
same day. One owner, let’s call him Jack, just drove the car into the ground. He never did regular maintenance, rarely changed the oil, never made repairs, and put the cheapest possible gas in the tank. The other owner, Jacquie, performed all the regular maintenance tasks and promptly performed even the smallest repairs when required. She also filled the tank with the right kind of gas and made sure the tires had enough air. In five years, Jack’s car was ready for the junk yard, and Jacquie’s looked and drove like it was brand new. Did you know that leading a sedentary life is more likely to kill you than smoking cigarettes?
and carried out by the University of Hong Kong and the Department of Health, concluded. With all the talk of the rising cost of healthcare, it is time we start taking better care of this amazing vehicle we were given at birth. Most of the maintenance won’t cost a dime and you have a much better chance to reduce your personal health care costs without any government legislation. Here are a few ways to give yourself a tune-up: · Take the stairs instead of the elevator · Put a stair-stepper or treadmill in your office - even 15 minutes counts · Walk around the block at lunch or on your breaks · Walk to the local market, the gym, etc. instead of driving. · Take your dog for a walk. If you don’t have one, rescue a dog from the local animal shelter. Now there’s a win/win!
That’s what a new study reported in the South China Morning Post,
So, ladies and gentlemen, start your engines!

“Super Couple” Matrimony Made with Medicine & Music
Drs. Yevgeniy and Jeannie Khavkin first met in Chicago, where they quickly discovered that they shared a lifetime of experiences. Both grew up in Russia, play musical instruments, and decided to follow in their mothers’ footsteps by becoming doctors. Sharing a passion for medicine and music, their commitment to one another in marriage was destined. The Khavkins left the Windy City for Las Vegas two years ago. Today, they are using their many passions to help shape the community where they are raising their young son. The couple is expecting their second child in December. Along with their family, their love of Las Vegas is also growing. “In Las Vegas, we’ve found so many wonderful opportunities and people,” says Jeannie, who is one of the few female facial plastic surgeons in Nevada. “We were drawn here because it’s a young city where we felt we could make a difference.” In 2010, Jeannie, who is boardcertified and completed a fellowship in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery at the University of Toronto, opened her Summerlin based practice, Khavkin Facial Plastic Surgery. “I have been fortunate to train with world-renowned leaders in facial plastic surgery,” she explains. She quickly established a reputation for excel12 • MyVegasMag.com

lence by combining her extensive training with an innate sense of aesthetics to help her patients achieve their aesthetic goals. Yevgeniy got an early start on his medical career. He has been playfully compared to TV’s Doogie Howser since he started medical school at the young age of 16. He finished medical school and neurosurgical residency at the University of Chicago and went on to complete a spine fellowship at Johns Hopkins University. Today he is a board certified neurosurgeon specializing in the minimally invasive treatments of spine disorders. The young couple is also passionate about giving back to the community. They are involved
in Helping Hands Surgical Care; a Las Vegas based non-profit organization whose mission is to provide medically necessary surgeries for uninsured Nevadans. Yevgeniy is a past president of the Russian American Medical Association and donates his time to MiraMed, a charitable organization with a vision of securing a healthy, productive life for all disadvantaged children in Russia, as well as to Jewish Healthcare International. Jeannie is a founding board member of Smiles for Survivors Foundation, a local non-profit that provides oral rehabilitation to breast cancer survivors. “Establishing a foundation that directly benefits breast cancer patients in my community has been very rewarding,” says Jeannie. The organization recently held its second annual Blow Out Breast Cancer event at Square Salon & Spa in Summerlin where it raised thousands of dollars. While balancing raising their family with careers and community service, the Khavkins still find time for the arts. They recently performed in “Doctors in Concert” where Yevgeniy was singing and playing guitar and Jeannie was accompanying him on a piano. “Balance in life is essential,” says Jeannie. “And fortunately, this is a philosophy that we both share.”

Would you like to experience the benefits of Dental Implants? Improved appearance. Dental implants look and feel like your own teeth. And because they are designed to fuse with bone, they become permanent.
Improved speech. With poor-fitting dentures, the teeth can slip within the mouth causing you to mumble or slur your words. Dental implants allow you to speak without the worry that your teeth might slip.
Improved comfort. Because they become part of you, implants eliminate the discomfort of removable dentures.
Easier eating. Sliding dentures can make chewing difficult. Dental implants function like your own teeth, allowing you to eat your favorite foods with confidence and without pain.
Improved self-esteem. Dental implants can give you back your smile and help you feel better about yourself.
Improved oral health. Dental implants don’t require reducing other teeth, as a tooth-supported bridge does. Because nearby teeth are not altered to support the implant, more of your own teeth are left intact, improving your long-term oral health. Individual implants also allow easier access between teeth, improving oral hygiene. Implant don’t get cavities and never need a root canal.
Durability. Implants are very durable and will last many years. With good care, many implants last a lifetime.
Convenience. Removable dentures are just that; removable. Dental implants eliminate the embarrassing inconvenience of removing your dentures, as well as the need for messy adhesives to keep your dentures in place.

with Michelle Mortensen Whenever I walk into a store I am always drawn to the most expensive thing. It happens everywhere from Nordstrom’s to Petsmart. I consider it a gift although my husband disagrees. Being cheap is not easy for me, especially during the holidays. For some reason, I want to decorate. I say it’s for my baby, but at 9 months I doubt she even notices the winter wonderland I’m compelled to create. My dilemma is doing it affordably. For Thanksgiving, I stormed home décor stores buying every gold, blingy pumpkin or turkey I could find. I broke the bank. My new strategy involves comparison shopping. Centennial Center is a great place to do this since my favorite home décor stores are all in one place. It is also worth a trip to Hobby Lobby, in my opinion. They have weekly coupons for 40% off one item and they carry a lot of BLING!! Can you tell I have a need for all things sparkly and sequined? Second, I’m turning to Pinterest for DIY Holiday décor. I’m no Martha Stewart, but I’ve got to tell you, Pinterest makes me believe I can do anything. I just hope Pinterest is right! If this strategy works, I’ll have more money in my pocket, a happy husband and a beautiful home. I’ll keep you posted. Channel 8, KLAS-TV On Your Side Consumer Reporter 20 • MyVegasMag.com

5 Factors
Of The Modern
World That Lead To
Child Obesity by James Druman
According to a showing on CBS News in January 2010, 2/3 of Americans are overweight, but even more alarming is the fact that childhood obesity has tripled over the last three decades. So, is child obesity a problem? That question hardly needs asking, but what concerned parents want to know is why--after all, it takes understanding a problem before you can get around to finding a solution. And if you look at the lives of children in the modern era as compared to the kind of childhood most of us lived, it’s really not that hard to see. Let’s look at 5 major factors of the modern world that are leading to this increase in child obesity. 1. High-tech Entertainment One major contributor is not so much sedentary living but the fact that the things that keep us sedentary have become so attractive. The special effects of movies and video games have reached a pinnacle of complexity, and even a 35 year old adult could find themselves lost in the world of gaming opportunities, where virtual realities often consume people’s lives. Sprinkle a child’s imagination into the mix and it’s no wonder they can sit for months and months lost in a virtual world.
24 • MyVegasMag.com
Developing Healthy Habits
2. Busy Parents While many parents know their children need some serious lifestyle changes, they simply don’t have the time to make that happen anymore. In most cases, both parents have to work and there is no one around to get the kids out and about.
3. Paranoia In the cities, violence in the media can often discourage families from allowing their children to go out on their own--so doing things like hiking around town or riding bicycles is completely off limits. While there are some dangers out there (largely depending on the area you live in), many parents are taking it too far. Social problems are not as bad as the news programs would lead us to believe. It’s just that we constantly get hammered with a barrage of bad stories and therefore assume the world is a dangerous place. 4. Poor Nutrition Many of our children, just like us,
do not get a healthy diet, and this is a large contributor to child obesity. The foods we eat are typically highly processed as well as loaded with sugars and fat. What our children need is whole foods and plenty of vegetables--and portions need to be significantly minimized because Americans eat way too much. 5. Bad Examples As the statistics show, many of us are just as unhealthy as our children, and this is largely a cause for this problem. Children learn by imitation. If we are eating unhealthy and never engaging in active past-times, they are bound to do the same, especially if we apply the same unhealthy principles to planning their diet and day. What kids need is not mystery--it’s what every person needs if they wish to combat obesity and the diseases that come along with it. They need plenty of exercise and a healthy diet. Need it any more simple that that? Exercise is as simple as children running around a yard. Good diet is as simple as real foods (not processed) and avoiding overeating. That’s it--and that’s why even you can give your children the healthy habits they need.

It’s bullying!
And, it has to be stopped. by Karen Cook TV news anchors are reporting this daily. We’ve read the newspaper headlines. We can’t believe it has all come to this. It’s a cause of suicide. Violence and murder. Now we can’t ignore it anymore. It’s bullying! And, it has to be stopped. Make no mistake. If adults were abused in the same manner as our bullied kids, we would call the police. Some statistics to serve as a wake-up call are: • Every 7 minutes a child is bullied on the playground • 8% of students miss one day of school per month because of fear • 43% are afraid to go to the school bathroom • 1 out of 4 kids is abused by another kid • 28% of youths who carry weapons witness violence in the home These stats are taken from the excellent website: http://www.atriumsoc.org/ Does anyone defend your child? Not by a long shot. • Adult intervention 4% • Peer intervention 11% • No intervention 85% Shocking, right? But, what if it is happening to your kid? You will want to do everything in your power to help your child because it’s not a matter of “kids being 30 • MyVegasMag.com
kids” anymore. Bullying has become an epidemic leading to serious consequences. How will you know your child is in trouble with bullies if they won’t tell you? Many won’t. They are afraid to speak up.
There are some signs you can watch for: • mood changes. Are they becoming angry, depressed, anxious? • suddenly does poorly in school • does not want to go to school • complains of physical ailments in order to stay home • comes home with damaged clothing or belongings • complains of “losing” belongings • has unexplained marks or bruises It’s important to help your child know it’s okay to talk about the incidents with you. An important description for younger children is the difference between “tattling” and “telling”. Tattling is when you say some-
thing about another person to get them in trouble just for the fun of it. Telling is reporting something someone has done to you to cause physical or emotional harm. And the actions were carried out with malice and intention. Parents, teachers, principals and law enforcement officers must understand the far-reaching effects of bullying. The antisocial behavior that started on the playground can span a lifetime. The bully’s aggression can manifest into sexual harassment, date violence, gang attacks, spousal abuse and elder abuse. The bullied child will have selfesteem issues. Grades will suffer with many victims dropping out of school to get away from their tormentors. They may make poor choices when dating because they come to believe it’s acceptable to be treated with disrespect. Their hurt and anger can lead to depression. And, a discontented and unaccomplished life. So whatever age your child, you must make noise. There is nothing as heart wrenching as seeing your loved one crippled spiritually. As much as we feel for the parents that are in the headlines, nobody wants to be another statistic.

NORTH END PIZZA 6440 N DURANGO DR. LAS VEGAS 702-645-9006 Vegas does many things right, but there is a huge debate about the pizza shops. “The water isn’t right”. “It’s nothing like back east”. Well, North End Pizza at North Durango and the 215 decidedto do something about it. Every couple months, dough made in the Boston area makes the 2,900 mile pilgrimage across the states - and it tastes every bit as good as an east coast pizzeria. Owner Claudia Vaccari comes from a long family legacy of pizza making, and it shows with every bite. The dough, fold-able The cheese, stretchable. The sauce, perfect. The mainstays like their Cheese Pizza and Supreme are all top notch, but our suggestion? Try the White Pizza withmozzarella and ricotta, olive oil and garlic. There’s no sauce, but it’ll be your instant favorite. And despite walls covered in Boston Red Sox paraphernalia, don’t worry. Fans of the Yankees, and everyone for that matter, are treated like family. Just don’t mention the results of last season, or you’ll give the staff “agita”. 36 • MyVegasMag.com

holiday food pairing
with Les Kinkaid!
When it comes to pairing wine with food there are no rules. You should drink the wines you like with the foods you like. But here are some basic guidelines to maximize those flovors. Match the weight & texture of the food and wine: A light-bodied fish like sole works well with a lightbodied white wine like Pinot Grigio, while a heavier-bodied fish like salmon calls for a richer, fuller-bodied white like chardonnay. Balance the intensity of flavors: A mild flavored food like roast turkey pairs well with lightbodied white and red wines like Sauvignon Blanc and Beaujolais, but in the context of a holiday dinner with stuffing, cranberry sauce, and other strongly flavored side dishes, an intensely flavored white like Gewürztraminer or a rich, fruity red like Syrah or Zinfandel is preferable. Balance tastes: The five basic tastes are sweet, sour, salt, bitter and umami (the recently discovered fifth taste is found in savory foods like mushrooms, soy sauce, and aged cheeses and meats). Salty and sour tastes in food make wines taste milder (fruitier and less acidic), while sweet and savory (umami) tastes make wines taste stronger (drier and more astringent). Match flavors: Flavors are combinations of tastes and aromas, and there are an infinite number of them. Counterpoint flavors: Sometimes, the best choice is to counterpoint flavors rather than matching them. For more information visit Les’ website at www.leskincaid.com.
coffee-spiced prime rib roast from BRADLEY OGDEN
(Serves 4-6) Rub Ingredients: • 6 garlic cloves, chopped • 2 tablespoons finely ground espresso beans • 1 tablespoon chili powder
• 1⁄2 teaspoon ground cloves • 2 tablespoons kosher salt • 2 teaspoons freshly ground pepper Roast Ingredients: • 7 pounds prime first-cut rib roast, with 3 full ribs • 1⁄4 cup grapeseed oil or vegetable oil • Kosher salt • Freshly ground black pepper
The coffee and chili powder add a nice earthy aspect that compliments and enhances the bold, beef flavor of the rib roast. Have your butcher prepare the prime rib with the fat cap still attached. Have him cut under the fat cap as though it were going to be removed but leave it attached on one side. Step by Step Instructions: Adjust an oven rack to the lower middle position and heat the oven to 400°F. For the Rub: Combine the ingredients in small bowl; mix well. Set aside. For the Roast: Peel back the fat cap and sprinkle the meat with the rub. Roll the fat layer back over the roast and truss with butchers’ twine. (Roast can be made to this point up to two days ahead.) Place the roast, rib-side down, in a large roasting pan and coat the roast with the oil; generously sprinkle with the salt and pepper. Roast for 30 minutes; reduce the oven temperature to 275°F and roast for another 2 to 21⁄2 hours or until internal temperature is 130°F for medium rare; 140°F for medium. Remove the roast from the oven and let it rest for 20minutes before slicing. Note: If you have a portion that is more rare than you guest would like, return that portion to the kitchen and place it in the pan with the roast’s drippings. Cook on top of the stove for 30 seconds on both sides or until desired doneness. Wine pairing: Cabernet Sauvignon MyVegasMag.com • 37

MICHAEL GRIMM by Mark Shaffer
The talented Michael Joseph Grimm was born December 30, 1979 in Colorado on the Fort Carson base, and was raised by his grandparents in Waveland, Mississippi. And now lives in right here in Henderson, Nevada. Grimm is an American singer/ songwriter and winner of the fifth season of America’s Got Talent who won the $1 million AGT first prize and is using some of his winnings to build his grandparents a new house. Grimm auditioned in LA for the 5thseason, of AGT which aired in the Summer of 2010. His audition won the hearts of all three judges, which sent him straight to Vegas Week. During Vegas week, he performed “Try a Little Tenderness”, and he advanced to the quarterfinals. His quarterfinal performance, “Tired of Being Alone”, was a winner and moved him onto the semi finals. At the semi finals, Grimm selected the song “You Can Leave Your Hat On” and out performed the competition, sending him to the finals. There he left his guitar behind and stunned the audience with “Let’s Stay Together”, which then sent him to the Top 4. 40 • MyVegasMag.com
On September 14, 2010, at the finals, he performed “When a Man Loves a Woman” and pointed to his girlfriend, Lucie, in the audience, winning America’s Got Talent for 2010. Following his AGT experience, Grimm took his winnings and went on the road headlining the AGTTour Show with a stop in Las Vegas at Caesar’s Palace, on October 8, 2010. The AGT Tour Show visited 25 cities across the USA. Making good on a promise, the AGT winner proposed on September 16, 2010, to Lucie Zolcerova, his girlfriend of nearly three years, during a taping of the Ellen DeGeneres Show. At the AGT finals, he revealed that his girlfriend, Lucie, was the love of his life, and the inspiration for his performance of “When a Man
Loves a Woman”. “She’s been there for me,” Grimm expressed to DeGeneres during the show, “Once you find that good woman you hang on to her.” During the taping of the show, DeGeneres called Lucie down from the audience, and Grimm got on one knee to propose. Her answer was a swift “Yes” Grimm married his fiancée,

It’s a rare opportunity to be invited into the home of your local mayor. However, when it comes to Mayors Oscar and Carolyn Goodman you’ll find it’s not all that unusual. They welcomed the MYVEGAS crew inside their home for a look at what it’s like: two mayors living together and raising their family here in Las Vegas. Oscar and Carolyn moved here as newlyweds in 1964 and wanted to raise their kids in a growing city and promising community. Who knew the impact they would have on the City of Las Vegas or the memories they would create beyond the walls of their Vegas home? On any given Sunday you never know who’s going to stop by the Goodman’s. It may be a knock from someone asking for an autograph (their home is not in a gated community as you might think) or it may be their favorite

visitors, their 4 children and 6 grandchildren wanting to swim or play games. The Goodman’s are always ready to welcome, entertain and feed the masses. Carolyn is the declared cook of the house. Oscar says he loves everything she makes, but especially her meatballs and her short ribs with Sauerkraut. In fact, Oscar says he’d much rather eat his wife’s cooking than go out to any restaurant. The couple says things haven’t really slowed down much since the 70’s when they first moved in. What was once a home with small children
and two working adults is now a home with grown children and grandchildren coming and going, and still two working adults. Not much has changed. While living in their first home near Eastern and Viking, a home they bought for $49,000, they had their eye on their current home. “We used to just drive around and look at the homes that we couldn’t afford and we kept driving by this particular home,” says Carolyn. Finally, in 1976 it was up for sale and they bought it. Their children were 3, 5, 6 and 6 at the time, so this house quickly became the

Goodman Family Home. Although there are many unique parts of this house there are a few things that make this home so spectacular. The Koi pond in the back yard is filled with fish, frogs and turtles. It’s a place that is special to Oscar and the kids. They would spend hours exploring and learning. Many of the paintings and sculptures found throughout the home were made by Oscar’s mother, once a well known artist in Philadelphia, where the Mayor and former Mayor lived before coming to Las Vegas with just $87 dollars in their pockets. Artwork and eclectic pieces are a huge part of the Goodman home. One of the first pieces of art they bought together hangs in the den. It cost $500; a lot of money back then. A

lot of money now. Carolyn says it took them forever to finally pay it off. Everything in their homes seems to represent a part of their journey, which can be traced back inside another favorite place in the home, the library. It holds the books the couple has collected

over the years and the history of their family and children. The Goodman’s have opened their home up to many famous faces over the years. The list includes many Presidents, actors
and sports figures that made it a point to stop by while in Las Vegas. From President Jimmy Carter, Ted Kennedy, Sir Anthony Hopkins, and Muhammad Ali to the cast of the movie Casino - Sharon Stone, Joe Pesci and Robert DeNiro. The Goodman’s friends may be famous, but they treat them like family. “We make everyone feel at home, no pretense, we have a good time,” says Oscar. Pictures of their guests are even sprinkled among family photos that stand on anything that will hold a frame. The family piano, in fact, plays double duty by also serving as a place to display family history through photographs and memories.

Las Vegas. We love this home,” said Carolyn. That pretty much settled it. She says there is just something about a familiar place, “after you’ve lived in a home long enough you can do it blind folded in the pitch dark and make your way knowing where everything is.” Mayor Goodman says working and raising a family here has been about balance. When talking about her work, community involvement and raising her children she says it’s just what you did back then. That’s what she was raised to do. “Your role in life is to take care of more than just yourself, you need to have a role. Do the best you can and make life better.” And that’s what she’s doing now. After retiring in 2010 from The Meadows School, which she founded in 1984, she was elected mayor of Las Vegas in 2011, taking the reigns from her husband who held the position for the previous 12 years. During her 48 years in Las Vegas, Mayor Goodman has made education her mission and has dedicated years of volunteering and service to the educational community. Today she continues her public service and gives back to the city she loves and the one that helped shape her and her family. That’s why we are so excited to have Mayor Goodman as part of the MYVEGAS family. Look for Mayor Carolyn Goodman’s column From the Mayor’s Desk in each issue of MYVEGAS Magazine where she will address issues that effect locals and highlight what makes Las Vegas such a special and unique place to live, work, and play. Sparkle is IN! A giant cocktail ring, even some sequins on a loose tank is a “DO” for a leisurely shopping trip or a night on the town. Remember, there’s a fine line between stylish and tacky. For work, muted sequins on a jacket or sweater can liven up any winter outfit. If you can’t find muted sequins, this season, try netting over sequins. That can give you the same muted appearance. Make sure the rest of the outfit is monotone. Wild patterns will quickly “tacky” up your look. For evening, go for bright, bold shimmer on a dress or pants. If you’re going for pants, look for black sequins. For a dress, it’s your choice, blue, green, black, gold... anything goes! Try not to overaccessorize. Trust me, one small piece of jewelry is enough. Simple stud earrings will do. Don’t be afraid of sequins. Go Vegas style and “Sparkle Up!”

my relationship
Justifying bad by Katie Bencze
Recently I was sitting with a dear friend at lunch. As many friendly conversations go, our chat eventually wandered into the realm of relationships. In the span of two hours we attempted to solve the problems of the world… or maybe we just confused ourselves more. Either way, somewhere between our salad and the check, we hit a subject that consumed the rest of our time…defense mechanisms. We’re talking good old Sigmund Freud and fun coping strategies like repression, denial, projection, etc. While Freud may own the rights to the introduction of defense mechanisms, I hold a gold medal in us-
behavior
age. Someone very close to me was bipolar. Growing up with it meant dealing with a roller coaster of emotions and situations. Finally, I discovered and honed my natural defenses. I had to find a way to let this person be a part of my life and still protect myself. In the end, it was these defense mechanisms that allowed me to process my situation and have a good relationship with this person. In turn, I am acutely aware of how powerful these defenses can be. How we use that power is up to us. Here’s the thing, we all have defense mechanisms. We are supposed to. Bluntly speaking, they allow us to deal with emotional or traumatic experiences without flying over the coo coo’s nest. Most are harmless enough as they are used to cope, but now and then you find someone that is so loaded with defenses that it is toxic. This is where the natural gift that is meant to protect us actually hurts us…or worse, those around us. I see these tendencies circle around guilty behavior like for example the woman who had an affair and convinced herself she didn’t. We can also look at those people who tend to go from Jekyll to Hyde. Eventually when they become Jekyll again and they need to justify what they’ve done as Hyde to salvage their own sanity. Many times they are so wrapped up in it; they may not be aware of it or have even convinced themselves of an actual alternate

my relationship
reality. This is very hard to understand from a normal perspective – but we’ve defined that this is not a normal situation. Navigating these relationships whether they are family or romantic can be very difficult, frustrating and exhausting. I don’t have the answers but I can offer a few things I’ve discovered along the way. First, this sucks. Usually it involves someone you love or have loved. When you come across this type of person, the thing you are going to want to do is rationalize them on your terms. You can’t. You are not dealing on a level playing field. The rules of logic that you may follow don’t always apply. Yes it’s not fair but its reality. Second, remember that you have to deal with the person at hand, not the person you want or expect them to be. You will find it much easier to navigate when you
keep this in mind. Third, don’t get wrapped up in your guilt or the blame game. Blaming yourself or blaming them is just a distraction and passes nothing but time and prevents healing. Finally, you must decide what you want. Do you want a relationship? Or maybe the situation has passed and you need some closure? Either way, you must understand that everyone is capable of different things. It’s ok to accept that they may not be capable of giving you what you need. And it’s ok to realize that you cannot fill the void that they lack. It is not yours to fill. So ultimately, deciding what you want from (and if you want) the relationship is a good start. From there, it gets very personal. Can you have a relationship with someone like this? Yes, but only you can decide if it’s worth it.

trial by peers Juveniles charged with misdemeanors can be tried, represented, & sentenced by their peers. by Bailey Shaffer
Did you know a person between the ages of 12 and 18 can pass a bar exam, be on a jury, and participate in court cases? I did, because of a unique program called Trial By Peers. Trial By Peers is an innovative diversion program used as an alternative for first time and some second time juvenile offenders. This program allows juveniles charged with misdemeanors to be tried, represented, and sentenced by their peers, and other teens. The teen participants in this program are able to learn how the legal system works. They get to be involved with judges, lawyers, and other legal authorities. To join this program I filled out an application, took the summer course classes, and then completed and passed a “Bar Exam,” suited for the young volunteers. It was a great experience, and an amazing program, that I am proud to say I am apart of! My peers are also, including Arielle Marvian. I asked her some questions about her experience with Trial By Peers: Q: When did you enter the 58 • MyVegasMag.com
program? I began with the summer course in 2009. This will be my 4th year in the program. Q: What made you decide to participate in the program? A: I’ve always had an interest in the law. When my 8th grade teacher told me about the program, I was very excited. I thought joining the program would be a great way to learn more about the

law, develop my speaking abilities, and allow me to participate in something that was unique to the community. Q: What are some of the
things you have learned while in the program? A: I’ve learned to better appreciate the law and have gained an understanding of the due process system. I’ve learned how to represent a client, how to give to others. My learning opportunities inside and outside the courtroom have been endless, an effective opening statement, how to argue a point; I have also become a better speaker and gained a sense of professionalism in how to communicate with others. Q: In what ways have you seen the program change other people? A: Many kids have made mistakes in their lives that have sent them to the program. These kids aren’t bad kids, they just need some direction. They have shown a small piece of what the criminal justice system has to offer. Most of these kids have learned from their mistakes and are better for it. Some have even joined the program. As other people in this program and I agree, Trial By Peers is a life changing opportunity that offers an abundance of knowledge. I would recommend any teens interested in law, public speaking, or people with free time to join. To volunteer or donate to this non-profit organization, please go to http://www.trialbypeers.org/

by Megan Mathis Really? When society tells us we are “seniors” at age 55, and stores begin to give us discounts, many of us also start to discount the possibility of achieving the dreams we still have. Year after year we continue to break records of physical feats, mental abilities, and age barriers – proving nothing is impossible. So why do we set limitations? Ruling out the obvious reason, that some things can be dangerous to your health, I suggest that we go forward without limitations. I suggest we start new projects and have new experiences and live each day fulfilling our dreams. There are so many true stories of accomplished men and women over the age of 55 who look and feel as if their only half way through a full and glorious lifetime. I am one of those believers, and you can count on me to encourage anyone, no matter what their age or desire, to GO FOR IT! Let’s break away from the idea that age will hold us back from our desires – because anything is possible! Here’s to a magnificent journey of fulfillment for people of all ages in 2013. Generous Donations Keep No-Cost Legal Program Going Strong by Michael Clark
Did you know that Clark County has a trusted resource for senior citizens’ legal services? The Southern Nevada Senior Law Program provides free, quality legal services to county residents who are age 60+. They are the only free legal service provider in Clark County that exclusively assists senior citizens. You may know them as the former City of Las Vegas Senior Citizens Law Project. The Law Project was sponsored by The City of Las Vegas since 1978 and unfortunately, in July of this year, the City had to withdraw its financial support due to the economic decline. Determined to continue this valuable program and with the support of the senior and legal community, The Law Project transitioned from a government program to a free standing non profit entity on July 1, 2012. Legal advocacy/assistance services are available in civil areas of law including simple wills, long-term health care planning issues, consumer disputes and small claims instructions, intervention in elder abuse, landlord/ tenant and mobile home problems, homesteads, social security problems and other government benefits problems. The Southern Nevada Senior Law Program also helps with preparation of documents for handling medical/legal issues in the event that the client is unable to do so. The dynamic force behind the law program is Executive Director Sugar Vogel. Ms. Vogel began as 62 • MyVegasMag.com
a part time attorney in 1984. Over the years Vogel’s responsibilities grew as the senior law program expanded its scope of service. There are now 7 full-time attorneys, a number that includes both Ms. Vogel and her Deputy Director, Elana Graham. “We work with our senior clients patiently and sensitively to ease their fears and resolve their legal problems,” Ms. Vogel
Sheri Cane Vogel, Esq. Executive Director, Senior Law Program
explains. As an example of the personal, rewarding experience involving older people, Vogel remembered, “Mary and Tom had been married for 53 years and led a happy, relatively quiet life. They were devastated when Tom was diagnosed with stage 3 cancer. This was the biggest challenge they had faced in all their years together. “They felt lost and alone but knew they needed to prepare for the future.” A Senior Law Program attorney patiently answered their questions and explained op-
tions. She guided them through completing their Powers of Attorney for Healthcare, Directives to Physician and wills giving them peace in knowing their wishes were documented. “Seven months later, Mary returned to us as a widow,” she recalled. “She tearfully told us how we had made a traumatic time more manageable and how grateful she was for our help. Since the assistance we had given the couple had been so valuable, she hoped we could help her move forward on her own.” After that, the attorney helped Mary update her will and re-title her home. “Mary was assured that we will always be here to help her in times of need.” Although legal services are provided at no cost, the program gratefully accepts donations. “We have several grants and other sources of income,” Ms. Vogel announced, “but very often it’s the individual donor who keeps us going. Our goal is to continue to provide these important and free legal services to the senior community and grow this program to meet the increasing needs of seniors and they meet the challenges of aging.” Because the Southern Nevada Senior Law Program is a 501 c 3 non-profit, all contributions are tax deductible. Even a very small donation is welcome. Interest parties can mail a check to SNSLP 310 S. 9th St. 2nd floor Las Vegas, NV 89101. For more information please call (702) 229-6596

10 Reasons
People Give back by Jamie Lober
Giving to charity can be self-gratifying, as you will reap the spiritual, emotional, social and psychological rewards. 1. Personal issue. If your friend or family member has heart disease or another chronic illness you may be more apt to give toward the cause. 2. Religious belief. Some feel it is more blessed to give than receive. 3. Family tradition. Some families are more giving than others. If you watch your parents do selfless deeds you are more likely to carry on the trend and instill the value in your own kids. 4. Clean up home. Charity does not always mean a monetary donation, as it can come in the form of clothing, furniture or household items that you no longer use which may mean the world to a person or loved one in need. 5. Tax relief. The monetary or material gift may be deductible so there is an advantage. Consult with your account for specifics. 68 • MyVegasMag.com
6. Community recognition. Donors are often recognized in the newspaper, at dinner events or on placards on buildings. Large donors often hold leadership positions in the community as well. 7. Advance medical research. Some organizations depend on funding in order to continue research so they can one day cure many diseases. 8. Workplace initiative. Many businesses are eager to support the community through charity sporting events where employees can form teams on behalf of their workplace which would foster teamwork, a sense of belonging and a positive feeling from giving back. 9. Setting a good example. Something as simple as saving spare change and deciding on a charity to give it to can have special meaning and encourage others to do the same. 10. Making a difference. Everyone can have an impact at any age regardless of how large or small the action may be. In the spirit of the holidays, it is a prime time to get into the act of giving. © 2012

Stay & play mesquite by Tammy Kincaid
For many, removing themselves from the daily hustle and bustle that life brings can be defined in many ways. A staycation, which gained popularity for several years due to the economic turndown, resulted in a family staying in their home city and enjoying area attractions. Today, however, couples can enjoy a quick getaway just 80 miles north of Las Vegas in Mesquite, Nevada as an affordable alternative. Many people would be surprised to learn that in spite of some hardships the town is still growing with a population of over 17,000. Visitors can choose from five different hotels in the area to fit every budget, some with casinos and several motels as well. The oldest and probably the most recognized of the five is the CasaBlanca Resort & Casino. It opened in 1996 by Merv Griffin and Players International and was known as Player’s Island Resort. The name was changed in 1997 when Black Gaming acquired the resort for 30.5 million. Today, Casablanca offers over 70 • MyVegasMag.com
450 contemporary style hotel rooms with European style bedding. No other casino in Mesquite, Nevada has as many dining options as the CasaBlanca Resort. Their gourmet restaurant, Katherine’s, offers an innovative menu featuring fish, seafood, poultry, pasta, and the finest cuts of beef from Chicago Stockyards Prime Beef. Caesar salad, spinach salad, bananas foster, and Café Diablo are all served with tableside flair, an art you rarely see today. Dinner is served daily from 5:00-9:00 p.m. with 50% off cocktails during happy hour from 4:00-5:00 p.m. The resort also has a 24-hour coffee shop and buffet with limited hours. If you have visited Mesquite before, you might be familiar with the Eureka Casino Resort. Newly remodeled and one of the nicest hotels to stay in Mesquite, the 214 rooms are decorated and styled with your comfort in mind. The Eureka is family-owned and operated since 1997 by the Lee family. Gregory T.H. Lee has incrementally transformed it from a small
and simple operation to a modern, multi-faceted hotel and casino. Their signature restaurant, Gregory’s Mesquite Grill, has exquisite cuisine cooked on a mesquite wood grill, traditional décor and great customer service. The menu features all the old-time favorites, along with added specialties of live Maine lobster and Italian cuisine nightly from 4:00-9:00 p.m. The remaining three hotel properties are Highland Estates Resort Hotel, Holiday Inn Express (formerly The Falcon Ridge Hotel), and the Virgin River Hotel & Casino. In addition, CasaBlanca does offer RV parking behind its property.

weekend getaways by Jessica Lovell Carro
Of course it depends on where you go, but traveling light and planning ahead is key. Make sure to check the weather and be ready to mix and match your favorite pieces. Think of items you can wear and wear again. Bring a great pair of heals for a night out, then work them into the day with a pair of shorts or skinny jeans. Choose neutral colors so you can add fun costume jewelry or a bright handbag. Don’t forget accessories that protect your skin like a fun fedora. Now’s your chance to experiment and mix it up a bit. Prepare to dress in layers, because the weather can change on a dime. Bring cardigans, light clothes you can take on and off as you go from day to night. Bring items that are feminine and sexy but that can also be sporty and comfortable. For men, it’s less complicated. If you’re heading to the beach there’s no need to over pack. A few pairs of khakis, a couple of polo shirts, a pair of nice flip flops should do the trick. For night , throw in a pair of khaki pants, a couple of dress shirts and maybe a fun cotton blazer. Don’t overcrowd the suitcase with anything too bulky. Think less is more, especially if you’re on a ski get-a-way. As always , try to leave a little room in the suitcase to bring any fun new finds home with you.

The Intelligent Way to Buy
The Farmers Market by John Cole
Why are so many individuals purchasing at farmers markets, read this and possibly you may join them. Over the past few years, farmers markets have multiplied in popularity. Removing the middleman, these food markets permit you to get tiptop and unprocessed produce that is all grown locally. Encouraging local business enterprise is excellent for the economy and what you may not recognize is that the food acquired at these markets tends to have marvelous flavors. Put simply, farmers markets are tremen-

dous for the consumer, the producer, and the environment. The Pros and Cons of Farmers Markets Guardianship for our environment is one of the greatest concerns for all of us now. Everybody is looking for directions in which to assist. Measures like trimming back the number of plastic bags we use, turning lights off when not needed and waste product recycling have all helped. Yet, one new thing that we can all do, is buy local food from a farmers market.
A lot of waste that goes on today is in packaging. At a farmers market, the packaging is limited. Produce such as fruit and vegetables are not packaged but remain loose. As they are developed nearby, they have less to travel which reduces the fuel intake used. Another advantage to foods picked up in farmers markets is that you understand precisely where it has been. The producer will give you genuine, information-packed response about the products they sell. Produce which is imported is normally, is treated with chemicals to ensure that it survives longer, whereas local produce does not need to be processed with anything, since it doestravel far. Without a doubt, the main advantage to consumers is the quality of the products. Usually, you get to taste the different wares on show before you purchase. Homemade jams, spreads and newly-baked cakes are all there to try out. You will find fresh tender meat, flowers, and hand-crafted decorations. There is an astonishing variety of food all with its own specific and terrific taste! Considering all these facts, it makes sense to buy food that is produced locally. Farmers markets allow you to taste honest-togoodness quality foods. One final point, some farmers markets are online which allows you to shop from hone and have your items delivered to your door.

The Smith Center
for the Performing Arts The Cultural Epicenter for Las Vegas by Debbie Hall
After more than two decades in the making, The Smith Center for the Performing Arts opened March 10, 2012 to a star-studded premiere and continues to shine with concerts, music, art, symphonies, weddings, and events as well as home to the Discovery Children’s Museum, and residence companies Nevada Ballet Theater and the Las Vegas Philharmonic. Located in downtown’s 61acre urban development, Symphony Park, The Smith Center offers performances by resident companies, first-run touring attractions and performers. The 5-acre cultural campus features three performance spaces: the 2,050-seat main performance area in Reynolds Hall; Boman Pavilion’s 258-seat Cabaret Jazz and 250-seat Troesh Studio Theater. There is also 1.7 acre park that offers outdoor concerts. Overlooking Symphony Park, the Cabaret Jazz club spotlights jazz artists and cabaret entertainers. “Cabaret Jazz is the perfect place for local music lovers to enjoy collaborations and performances by our generation’s greatest musicians and entertainers,” said Myron Martin, president and CEO of The Smith Center. “Cabaret Jazz is a distinctly different venue than others at The Smith 80 • MyVegasMag.com
Center,” Martin said, noting that it operates similar to popular live jazz and cabaret clubs that can be found in New York City or Chicago. “It’s an easygoing yet elegant club that pays homage to the spirit of America’s music and embodies the spirit of Las Vegas.” Through affiliations with the John F. Kennedy Center’s Any Given Child program and the Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts, The Smith Center seeks to expand arts education for all Southern Nevada students. The Smith Center features monumental outdoor and indoor sculp-

The city of Las Vegas, Clark County and State Legislature collaborated on a car rental fee that resulted in a bond of $105 million with a commitment totaling $170 million. In 2005, The Donald W. Reynolds Foundation gifted $50

million in honor of their chairman, Fred W. Smith, and his wife, Mary, and pledged an additional $100 million grant to help complete the campus. The vision then led The Smith Center’s design team to visit venues across North America and Europe in 2007, where they studied some of the world’s finest opera houses, concert halls and performance venues. After the tour, the team came together to design The Smith Center. MyVegasMag.com • 81

Let’s face it, Las Vegas is known for many things – gambling, the skimpily-clad showgirl, the glitz and neon lights – but arts and culture, not so much. Time and again, there have always been locals and local patrons that champion the Las Vegas art and cultural scene, but success has always been elusive, until now. One of the earliest efforts at trying to grow this local scene is “First Friday.” Founded in 2002, by long-time downtown residents, Cindy Funkhouser, Julie Brewer and Naomi Arin, the event has had its fair share of controversies and naysayers. When it started ten years ago, it had an initial attendance of 300 or so people; five years down the line and that number ballooned to 10,000; and now, a decade later, and it’s doubled to over 20,000 attendees.
The irony is not lost on me that it took an “outsider,” in the form of First Friday LLC, comprising Zappos execs Tony Hsieh, Fred Mossler and Steve Hill, downtown developer Andrew Donner 84 • MyVegasMag.com
st
and Joey Vanas, Managing Partner, to take over the event, after its brief hiatus in 2011, amidst the height of the recession. Perhaps this is the push that downtown Las Vegas needs – it helps that there seems to be more of a concerted effort, and more importantly, a downtown “evangelist” of sorts in the form of Hsieh. It’s all coming together now, albeit slowly, where, perhaps in the past, when the event seemed a little disjointed; today it’s more cohesive, with a lot more participants and attendees. Differences aside, art was, is and always will be at the heart of the event – it is this support that is paramount to its success. The new owners recently launched the First Friday Foundation, which aims to build on the success of First Friday events by implementing programs that “keep local artists working, creating, and inte-
grating with the community.” First Friday “virgins” can expect young and established local artists displaying and selling their work. Plus, food trucks galore, live music featuring up-and-coming bands, spread across four stages, special art installations, live performance paintings, a dedicated kids zone, and the most important and most difficult to put into

words, a vibe that’s unmistakably cool and hip, that one just can’t resist being a part of. The end result? It brings people together, it fosters a feeling of community, one that Las Vegas sorely needs, and more importantly, it improves the quality of life for all residents. So get out there and prove that art and culture is alive and well in Vegas.

celebrating the holidays with your pet!
by Jessica Lovell Carro The holidays can be fun for everyone, including the family pet. But your furry friend might require some special attention so think ahead before the festivities begin. Be mindful of your guests around the holidays. Your pet may be the love of your life, but not everyone feels the same. Prepare a special room or area to put your pet when inviting party guests over. Avoid glass ornaments and edibles ones that might temp your pet around your tree. There’s also lots of fun to have with your pet too. Whether they like it or not, it’s a perfect time to dress up your pet, even if just for a quick photo opportunity. It’s fun to buy a new chew toy or try a new gourmet treat they might like. Shop wisely because there are plenty of ways to fill your pets stocking that are budget friendly. Pet-themed gifts are always a favorite among pet lovers. You can personalize dishes, wine glasses, pet beds and more. These are often gifts you can make on your own, if you’re crafty. You can even make a donation in a friend’s name! Spread the love. There are many ways to help local charities and donate to animal programs where your money can go a long way at making a difference in the life of a homeless pet. Check with your favorite pet store or local pet charity and find out how you can help. 86 • MyVegasMag.com

they’re good for your
There are powerful benefits that are bestowed on us by our loving, loyal and beautiful pets. From dogs and cats to horses, donkeys, birds, fish, rabbits and reptiles, the research is clear: having a pet improves our lives in quality and longevity. Actual studies at UCLA found that pet ownership corresponds to better health and fewer medical visits. Research has also shown that pet owners are generally healthier and happier than non-pet owners. Studies further reveal that just looking at animals can reduce anxiety in times of stress. For example, the simple act of looking at fish swimming in a tank can induce feelings of calmness and relaxation. This may be why many doctors have aquariums in their offices. Fostering pets is a way to rescue abandoned animals; it provides a temporary loving home until a permanent loving home can be found. This act of kindness toward an animal is beneficial to our health, feels good and benefits all those involved. Teachers can also attest to the positive impact having classroom pets like fish, turtles, hamsters, hermit crabs or horny toads can be for young children. It gives kids a sense of responsibility to care for the pets and helps them to learn about these specific animals. Students observe first-hand how animals respond to
human interaction. It creates interest in caring for pets as a natural part of learning.
Pets like dogs, donkeys and horses get us outside to either walk or ride them. This has a direct impact on our health and exercise habits. Pets also require us to participate in soothing meditative activities like petting and brushing them which helps to lower our heart rate, blood pressure and stress levels. Our pets learn to understand what we say. At our house we have to spell the words ‘walk’ and ‘cookie’ so our dogs don’t get too rambunctious when we are about to take them for their walk or give them a doggie treat. Some breeds are said to understand up to 300 words. Birds are also very smart and can understand what is being said. Some bird species can even mimic human speech. Animals seem to have an uncanny sense of our moods based on subtle cues like body language, tone of voice and demeanor. They help us to keep our own behavior in check. We can observe the reactions of our pets when our voices are raised in excitement or anger. Pets are sensitive and help us to become more sensitive as well.

Some dogs have been trained to sense shifts in diseases or the aura that precedes an epileptic seizure and can warn their person or guide them to safety. Such helper dogs are trained to also spot “freezing in Parkinson patients and with a touch of their nose can miraculously unfreeze a foot or hand. Dogs have also been trained to detect low blood sugar in diabetic patients and give a signal to correct their blood sugar before a serious reaction can occur. Pets are remarkable for their capacity to love us unconditionally. They bring us good cheer, humor and companionship on a daily basis. My dogs run out to greet me and do the happy dance everyday when I pull into the driveway. Pets improve every aspect of our lives through their love, optimism, compassion and goofiness; they are good for our health. Pets make us more human. need a career change? apply these 7 principles By Keji Giwa The need for a career change tends to occur when people start to experience one or a combination of two factors. These two factors can either be Internal or External. The sad case is that although many feel the need for a career change, they have no idea what they would like to do next and for some, what they want to do is obvious but how, where and when continues to elude them. Regardless of the factors that trigger the need for a career change, the most important question one needs to answer is ‘WHY’. 2 years ago, we re-packaged our winning formula for helping people attain the career of their dreams and doubling their salaries. The results have been phenomenal with 100% success rate and thousands of people attaining the right career change and getting job of their dreams. However, before we tell you what this winning formula is, let us establish the key reasons why people develop the need for a career change: There are two deciding factors for this: External FactorsA lot people develop the need for a career change due to a number of external factors and these can be related to their working relationships with fellow colleagues, an inability to grow within the company, poor location, an unpleasant environment or family related reasons. 92 • MyVegasMag.com
When any of these factors become the need for a career change, there are questions you need to ask yourself before making that life changing decision to change your career. “Am I sure the problem does not lie with me?” 1. How well do you relate with people? - Would you say your attitude welcomes or drives people from you? If the problem has got to do with your attitude, you’ll have the same problem elsewhere. 2. How competitive are you within your current role? - Employers
value employees that help grow their business and will give anything to retain that person. Are you exercising your natural talents at work daily? Your natural energisers (PASSION)! Do you have any for your current job? 3. Location, environment and family related reasons are also external factors that puts us in a position to make life changing choices,
but they must never be at the risk of loosing our identity. what makes us whole and fulfilled in life. Internal Factors These factors are probably the most valid reason when it comes to experiencing the need for a career change. It’s battle between what your conscience is telling you, your dreams, hopes, aspiration and your current situation. The need for a better life, a more fulfilling career, the ability to exercise your natural talents and engage your passion. A Combination of External & Internal Factors On the other hand, it could be a combination of both external and internal factors, which can be very dangerous because it can lead to a life of frustration, despair. Inevitably leading to envy and jealousy for the progress of other people. When this happens, you could find yourself wanting the success of others and dedicating your life to getting it. This is a road that will always lead to a dead end. Little progress is made when you try to be someone else. Most times, your weaknesses become more evident and people begin to see an incompetent employee rather than a competent one. So Why Do You Need A Career ChangeThis is what it’s all about. Finding the answer to your ‘WHY’s in life. As Stephen Covey once mentioned at one of his seminars, if you can find the answers to your
my career & education
‘WHY’s in life, you can handle any ‘WHAT’, ‘WHERE’, ‘WHEN’, ‘HOW’ or ‘IF’. Why do you need a career change? If your answer to this question falls under the need to attain career fulfilment, enjoy going to work and getting paid a fortune for what you do so naturally, then our successfully tried and tested, easy to apply principles can help you make the right career change today. Here is a quick summary of the 7 easy to understand and apply principles to changing your career and attaining the job of your dreams: Step 1: The 12 Laws of Discovering Your Purpose- Give a dog a bone and you’ve got it working, give a dog your month’s wage in cash and you’ll be working extra hours to make the money back.
“Where purpose is unknown, abuse is inevitable”- Myles Munroe Step 2: Creating Your Unique Selling Point People will only see you as you see yourself. When you pay to watch a play or a movie, you are not just there to see the actors but to enjoy the characters they portray - 100% of our candidates have potentially doubled their salaries and gotten the career of their dreams because our eWorkshop has taught them how to create their Unique Selling Point (USP). Step 3: Knowing What The Employer Wants A doctor never tries to treat a patient without trying to first diagnose the cause of illness. Diagnose the Em-
ployer - Joyce attained two great job offers because of this. This eWorkshop will teach you how to do this in relation to your chosen career. Step 4: Job Hunting Smarter Not Harder 70% of jobs are never advertised and 1 in 4 jobs are duplicated online at least 5 times out of the 30% of jobs actually advertised. You need to be looking for the 70% of jobs. How you do this requires thinking outside the box. Step 5: How To Rebrand & Remarket Yourself To Win 80% of employers overlook key details on your Resume / CV and to every job advertised nationally, there are 1000 applicants to each job. If your Resume / CV does not stand out, you might as well stay out. Our sample Resume and CV templates got Joyce a job of a life time. Triple her previous salary. Step 6: How To Network From The Top Down If Bill Gates was your best friend, would you need to contact HR? The internet has made networking as easy as a piece of cake. James has been using this concept since he graduated. Today, he is an Investment Banker for one of the world’s Investment banking companies. Step 7: Selling Without Selling At Interviews No one likes to be sold to. We like to feel like we are buying for our own reasons. When you go fishing and you want to catch a fish , do you bait the hook with your favourite food or with the favourite food of the fish. Bait the hook according to the fish type. Maria applied this principle and she is earning double her previous salary.
