PUBLISHING EDITOR’S LETTER

Once again we share an amazing issue with our valued readers and loyal clients. This is our first issue for 2015, and change is good. The changes we have made with this issue give our clients a far better return on their investment, and our issues from here on will be available on the shelves for 6 months at a time. I would like to thank our dedicated team, including our new and regular contributors, for assisting us to create this issue in which we give bridal couples many different ideas for planning their special day. In this issue we have 5 competitions especially for you – good luck to everybody that enters! Thank you to Aleit for giving us his valuable input on weddings, telling us what can actually go wrong and how to deal with it. I am confident that every reader will enjoy his personal feature on page 7. He also gives us the benefit of his expertise on décor on page 90. A big welcome to Gareth Kenna, who gives us his insight into different aspects of planning a typical wedding day. Be sure to read his ‘tongue in the cheek’ article on page 156. During the past few months I was invited to several exclusive destinations, experiencing the luxury of several resorts in Mauritius and also doing reviews on local wedding venues and honeymoon destinations such as Arniston (page 160) and De Grendel in Cape Town. Make sure to read about these incredible venues, as well as the food review on page 60. On your wedding day décor is a high priority, and we are proud to feature a whimsical one-of-a-kind underwater shoot by talented photographer Ilze Moore on page 86. CREDITS Make-up: Bobbi Brown www.bobbibrown.co.za Clothes: Chilli Mer Boutique www.chillimer.co.za Photographer: Saara Pasanen

We also have 12 Real Weddings for you, which are a popular feature with all bridal couples to gather ideas. These beautiful weddings all took place recently, so reflect new trends. We also feature two beautiful engagement shoots, by Joggie Prinsloo and Ett Venter, on pages 64–67 and 68-69. What a lovely way to celebrate your engagement. We were privileged to have the team of My Wedding Day travel to a magnificent resort in Mauritius called Ambre, sponsored by World Leisure Holidays and Air Mauritius. We created the most incredible fashion shoot for brides and grooms, as well as lingerie and fashion shoots for the honeymoon couple. The talented photographer, Kobus Tollig, captured details of all of the garments and had so much fun with the amazing backdrop of Ambre resort. It was a wonderful experience to work with him, being highly professional and passionate about his work. We also wish to thank the incredible make-up artist, Lee-Anne Nourse, for all her hard work, as well as Ria Prinsloo, our fashion expert, for her styling of our professional models, Tarbi, Sherri and Rudi, who were all ready by 5am every morning. These images are in our Fashion section as well as the Groom section. We are proud to say that our enthusiastic team created this issue with passion and dedication, and it is our wish that you will benefit from all the features and articles, in planning your own wedding day. We are looking forward to our next issue, which is already in planning, and cannot wait to share it with you. Follow us on our social media – and look out for the invitation to our 2015 Bridal Event, happening soon.

ALEIT In a sudden, heart-chilling moment I looked down to see a 2m long black tyre mark on her dress from the freshly polished wheels of the car. She turned around in a panic, asking how bad the damage was. In the background Mendelssohn’s Wedding March was already sweeping through the third bar of music. What could I do but tell a little lie: ‘Nothing’s wrong’, while neatly tucking the scuff mark between the folds and covering it with the gorgeous veil. Crisis averted. Oh, the rings, the rings. Picture this – one of our most beautiful ceremonies in full swing, motherin-laws already in tears, the bridesmaids beaming with pride. Then the minister asks for the rings to cement the marriage – at which point the 18-yearold ring bearer realises he left them at the house. Well, the trio played their entire classical repertoire during the half hour that followed, while the poor lad retrieved the valuables. That reminds me of another ceremony disaster … The poor minister, obviously a little aged and somewhat forgetful, started the ceremony with the most beautiful message. But when he finally addressed the couple all hell broke loose; you see, he kept addressing sweet Catherine as Caroline. Now naturally everyone is getting a little uncomfortable. The ceremony was almost over when Catherine, in horror, finally piped up and corrected the minister. See, the gentle Catherine was frightened that the wedding wouldn’t be legal should she be addressed otherwise. Such a sweet soul. Another memorable ceremony was hosted at the gorgeous Tintswalo Atlantic, so sadly destroyed by a horrible fire earlier this year. We had come up with a foolproof Plan B in

THE DIAMOND BOUTIQUE AND CANVAS STATIONERY BOUTIQUE CRAFT SPECIAL CREATIONS Elna Blom is founder and owner of The Diamond Boutique (formerly African Diamonds), which she started in 1983. She says: “When it comes to engagement/wedding rings, I believe in two things: no matter what your budget, we are able to design and manufacture a ring that is the perfect resemblance of your relationship, and that every client should be completely in love with their rings. We will go back to the design until you fall in love with your ring – that is a promise!” Elna was expecting her daughter, Carike Greffrath, when she started The Diamond Boutique, and Carike today loves working in the business, and says: “When you work in jewellery you’re generally working with happy people – couples getting engaged, having wedding bands made, husbands having earrings made for their wives as anniversary gifts. This is what will keep me in the business for years to come!” Carike also owns Canvas Stationery Boutique, a design and manufacturing studio focused on creating exceptional designs for weddings, company and other special events. MAKE-UP | SKOONLIEF

“That’s why I began doing make-up in the first place: I was hoping that through helping people see the beauty in themselves, I could try and find it in me.” – World-renowned late American make-up artist, Kevyn Aucoin Suzanne Potgieter just adores doing make-up and hair, and named her company ‘Skoonlief’, which means ‘beauty’. The fairytale Beauty and the Beast holds great meaning for the philosophy behind Skoonlief. Says Suzanne: “Once we discover beauty in others, this inner discovery also leads to an outward transformation. Making my clients enhance their natural beauty also enhances my life. It is a magical and fulfilling moment once a client sees herself in the mirror.” Once she completed her studies as a make-up artist (including airbrush make-up) and hair stylist, Suzanne decided to specialise in bridal make-up. “Being part of a bride’s special day is one of the greatest privileges a make-up artist can have, and one that I relish. “At Skoonlief I try to give my brides a make-up experience that boosts how they feel about themselves. Be it a fashion shoot, special occasion or your

wedding day – I try to make you feel the most beautiful you have ever felt.” When Suzanne is at work the atmosphere is one of absolute joy and laughter as she transforms the person in front of her into the best version of herself,

Just as you spring-clean your house, you are also supposed to springclean your make-up. How often do we tip over our entire makeup bag to reveal the little bits of nasties lurking on the bottom of the bag? At the same time, replace old, outdated make-up: Heavy foundation and pressed powder should be replaced by something lighter and dewy, smokey eye shadows should be replaced with lighter, more vibrant, neutral eye shadows. Also swop powder blush for a cream blush that can double up as a lip product. u

Montblanc Patron of Art Edition - Henry E. Steinway The name “Steinway & Sons”, found above the keyboard of every piano produced by Steinway, is immortalised as a fine engraving on the gold-plated cone ring, while the 750 (18 carat) gold nib is intricately engraved with a portrait of Henry E. Steinway himself, capturing the noble aspects of his character: determination, perfectionism and passion. The Montblanc emblem in black and white precious resin crowns the fountain pen. Displaying all the most iconic features of a Steinway grand piano, the Limited Edition 888 cap is adorned with the representation of a piano harp made from precious 750 solid gold. Through the delicately crafted skeletonised cap, the gold nib can be seen, finely decorated with a filigree portrait of Steinway. The barrel features the depiction of one octave of piano keys in black and white, celebrating the exquisite balance, flexibility and smoothness that make a Steinway keyboard so unique. The pattern on the cap ring is inspired by the decor of the domed rotunda in the Steinway Hall in New York. For this edition the iconic Montblanc emblem is created from precious mother-of-pearl. With every design detail, Montblanc’s limited edition writing instrument captures the remarkable achievements and personality of the artist. The Montblanc Patron of Art Edition Henry E. Steinway is available in select Montblanc boutiques worldwide. For further information visit www.montblanc.com

Montblanc Patron of Art Edition - Luciano Pavarotti Limited to just 98 pieces worldwide, the limitation number of the Luciano Pavarotti Limited Edition 98 commemorates the year Pavarotti was presented with a Grammy Legend Award for his contributions and influence in the music industry. The overall design of the writing instrument is based on the tenor’s unforgettable performances of Puccini’s Turandot and its tragic score inspired by the rich cultural heritage of China. The mythical Chinese dragon entwines the writing instrument’s cap and barrel, made of masterfully skeletonised 750 solid gold. Recalling the flower that inspired Princess Turandot’s musical motif throughout the opera score, a jasmine flower delicately engraved in white jade adorns the 750 solid gold cone. The velvet curtain of the opera stage of the Teatro Comunale in Modena named after him is symbolised by the red lacquer of cap and barrel, enhanced with a delicate guilloché. In a final tribute to a man who truly stood out with his powerful voice and passion for humanitarian work, a finely engraved portrait of the opera star adorns the 750 solid gold nib of this Limited Edition.

She will then have her second envelope, which will need to be opened when she arrives at her destination. When she arrives, she will open the envelope and realise that she has been treated to a day of pampering at Skin Renewal, for instance. It will also state that they are aware of her favourite treatments. She will then see she has a third envelope, which can only be opened after her day at the spa and when she is on her way to her next destination. The third envelope will allow mention that she is on her way to (for example) the V&A Waterfront, and will contain the money for the taxi driver. She will now have her fourth envelope, which will say ‘Open me when you get to the V&A Waterfront’. Little does she know that when she opens this envelope she will receive what all women dream of – her man’s credit card, for her to spoil herself. Her fifth envelope will then tell her to meet her best friend at 4 p.m. for dinner and a movie of her choice. This is guaranteed to impress her! KOBUS TOLLIG PAGE 40

GROOM ETIQUETTE

Not only is it important to consider your fiancée, but also her mother and family. Gestures such as vintage wines, cheese and flowers could be given. Don’t forget the men! Gifts are also given to the male wedding entourage, which includes the best man, groomsmen and both the father of the groom and father of the bride. Gifts should be given two days before the wedding and should be unique – best suited to each personality. For the fathers, one could purchase premium pocket knives. For the best man and groomsmen, cufflinks, socks and colourful Fabiani laces are prime. When hand-delivering each gift, ensure that you include a personalised card too. The last, special gift will be given to the groom’s fiancée the night before the wedding. Consider giving her something she does not own or that could be worn on the wedding day – something borrowed or something blue. Try and tie the gift into your vows to make it extraordinary. These are only some of the important responsibilities of the groom. Along with his fiancée, you need to choose wedding bands, give the ceremony officiate the fee or donation (or arrange for the best man to present the fees), respond to all toasts that take place on the wedding day, assist with choosing a select playlist of music, and most important – to not shy away from the writing of thank you notes after receiving all the gifts. The last duty of the best man is … the planning of the much-needed honeymoon. Choose a unique destination that none of your friends have experienced. Lead her to believe that the honeymoon will be a local destination – but surprise her with her international departure ticket in the end. Take responsibility as the groom, and you are guaranteed to be given attention during this planning process! u

EDITOR’S REVIEW | FOOD

WORDS AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY SUSAN SMIT - PUBLISHING EDITOR

I recently had the privilege to experience the food at one of the finest restaurants in Cape Town – De Grendel Restaurant – with my colleague, Ria. Here are my impressions. We were seated in the beautifully decorated restaurant with an earth

element, ambiance of wood and old family photographs, therefore bringing the past and present together. The glass-walled kitchen is the modern element, designed with wrap-around views of the Chef and his staff creating masterpieces to be served to their frequent guests. When you look to the opposite side from the kitchen you are overwhelmed by the unspoilt view of vineyards, Table Mountain and the Atlantic Ocean. We were served their popular duck breast confit, brioche, spring onion and celery dish, where all ingredients come from local suppliers. The dish was magnificent with the freshness of

the spring onion and finely cut celery enhancing the flavours. Our main courses were pasturefed beef fillet with fine beans, carrot, broccolini and potato, complemented by port, and pork belly fillet combined with bacon, mini brussels sprouts, orange and sundried tomato. Both dishes are highly recommended! We completed the amazing experience with a dessert – baked farm yoghurt, rose fig, berry, pistachio, meringue, mint and biscotti. We did not feel even a bit guilty about this, since it was a light dessert but with all the elements and flavours you would expect. The 2013 Merlot and 2015 Sauvignon Blanc from their team of Cellar master Charles Hopkins and winemaker

Elzette du Preez complemented all of the dishes. Sous Chef Garth Davids made sure that we were enjoying the dishes he helped prepare for us with so much passion and dedication. He is such a humble man who is very proud to be part of this team with restaurateur Jonathan Davies, co-founder of De Grendel, which opened in May 2012. Their vision was to build a good restaurant with a reputation of good food with reviews some can only dream about. It is clear that their combination of delectable food and fine wines creates great success for this restaurant.

A CHAT WITH CHEF IAN BERGH How did you get involved in your career as a chef? I went to Stellenbosch University after school, studying psychology. I shared a flat with two friends and we all had to cook twice a week. For me this was the highlight of my week! After university there was no money for chef school, so I just started working in restaurants and worked my way up. The first 10-15 years were really tough; I hardly saw my friends and family and earned very little money. What has been the highlight of your culinary career to date? I must say opening the restaurant at De Grendel. I worked as sous chef for Franck Dangereux at La Colombe for 3 years where we were voted best restaurant every year – but to be involved in a restaurant right from the beginning and seeing it grow and flourish is just awesome! Working at De Grendel surely has its challenges. What would you say makes your

LIEZENNE VAN HUYSSTEEN & ALLERDYCE FULTON This couple had to be up at 4 a.m. to get the effect that their photographer wanted to create for their engagement shoot. We think it was well worth the effort. Photographer: Ett Venter Photography Location: Pretoria

Liezenne and Allerdyce first met as kids, at about 4 years old. “Our folks were friends through the church. So we grew up together. ‘Kiddy love’ playing in the mud and climbing trees grew into unconditional love.” Allerdyce tells us how he proposed: “I took Liz out for dinner to celebrate her birthday on Friday 5 March 2014. We went to our favourite restaurant, Kai Thai at Montecasino. She had no idea there was a proposal on the way. We sat outside on the balcony and had our meal. I don’t remember the meal at all, but I do remember being terrified. “After the meal and a little wine I finally built up the courage to get down on one knee. As I was about to stand up and start my little speech that I had rehearsed way too many times, a family of about 15 sat down next to us. So my plans suddenly changed. “I went to our waiter and said I wanted another table inside where it was quiet. I asked if he could put two glasses of champagne on the table. He responded by saying I needed to buy the bottle since they don’t sell champagne by the glass. Once I found out how much the bubbly cost, I asked for PAGE 68

FASHION | LA PARIS

This beautiful shoot was a creative collaboration between Jacques Crafford Wedding Films, Lace Blossom, Helga Bridal & Make-up, Aartsappel and Du Wayne Photography. The inspiration for the shoot started to develop after we paid a visit to the beautiful brand new wedding and functions venue, La Paris. La Paris dates back to 1699, and is situated just 8 km outside the historical town of Franschhoek. The beautiful reception halls, lavender avenue and scenery were what sparked all of our creative ideas to come together. Lace Blossom has started a skirt range, which offers brides a more affordable and versatile way to style their look for their perfect wedding day. The idea is to make the outfit unique by choosing a desirable blouse to create the look and style that you are after. This option is for brides that do not desire a custom-made haute couture wedding dress. Accessories such as satin or beaded belts can be added for more detail and to customise your look. Lace Blossom can also offer styling ideas to create a stylish, classic look with the skirt you have chosen. The bonus is that the skirt can be worn after your wedding, and styled with more casual tops or blouses. This shoot uses just one versatile skirt from Lace Blossom, teaming it with a variety of blouses and accessories to show you just what can be achieved with this innovative addition to bridal wear, and how many very different looks can be achieved. u

REAL BRIDAL SHOWER

TEA FOR TASH NATASHA CHAPMAN

FLOWER CROWN SHOWER

31.01.2015 VENUE: BUITENGELUK IN BROADACRES, JOHANNESBURG DÉCOR STYLE: WHIMSICAL NUMBER OF GUESTS: 45

The theme of this bridal shower or kitchen tea was based on brideto-be Natasha (Tash)’s favourite book when she was growing up,

The Secret Garden. Apparently all of the major events in her life have always had a whimsical feel, so her Maid and Matron of Honour

THEME: THE SECRET GARDEN

wanted to make sure that the bridal shower also had that feeling. All

that Tash knew beforehand was the date and the venue – everything

else was kept under wraps. (See her real wedding feature on p. 128.) PAGE 84

REAL BRIDAL SHOWER

Tash is a big reader, so they scattered secondhand books all around the venue to add a vintage feel. They also set up a wishing tree where guests could write on cut-out hearts and hang their wishes for Tash and her fiance, Neal to it, and a ‘date jar’ where guests could drop in suggestions for dates that the couple have to go on. These two elements allowed the guests to be involved. Adds Maid of Honour, Tash’s sister, Jessica: “We made sure to incorporate personal touches to the day such as photos of Tash and Neal hanging from the tree by the present table. The games were a big highlight, and the games we chose highlighted how well Tash and Neal know each other. They also added a naughty (but not sleazy) twist.” Her advice for other Maids of Honour organising a bridal shower is as follows: “As much as the bridal shower is so exciting for the bridesmaids, try to remember that you have been chosen mainly to help with the wedding preparations. Make sure that you are still there for the bride-to-be with her wedding plans, because it’s very easy to get caught up in the bridal shower and lose sight of what your main role is. “On the day of the bridal shower it helps tremendously to have someone there that isn’t a part of the bridal party to help set up. We had Carla’s parents, who calmed us down and helped us hang things from tall trees, gave us objective advice and, when we had to rush to go and get ready, made sure that everything looked perfect. Also, don’t forget to feed the bride and give her

lots of water throughout the day!” u

REAL WEDDING DECOR | UNDERWATER SHOOT

WORDS BY CANDACE ALLAN FROM ABSOLUTE PERFECTION AND ILSE MOORE

Our talented décor team from Absolute Perfection and photographer Ilse Moore wanted to bring you something that hasn’t ever been seen before - a mini wedding-inspired styled shoot under water! They wanted to create something otherworldly and whimsical - a wonderland of pastel colours in a soft, out of this world underwater ambiance - and we are sure that you will agree that they succeeded.

PAGE 86

DECOR | UNDERWATER REAL WEDDING SHOOT

PAGE 87

DECOR | UNDERWATER SHOOT

Shooting underwater makes it difficult to achieve very specific ideas or looks due to the fact that it is a very unstable and unpredictable environment. Keeping this in mind we planned all of our shots in a ‘forgiving’ manner, and allowed our talented models to express their creativity underwater and to interpret the scene as if they were truly experiencing the atmosphere and beauty of the moment. Their interpretations of their surroundings fitted beautifully with the pastel colours and romantic tones, and helped the photographer to create a very painterly feel within the images. Being underwater brings such calm and peace to a person; it is almost a whimsical escape, and we wanted to capture this idea – almost like Alice in Wonderland when she comes across a world that is unimaginable. Of course the idea of putting a full table with flowers, candles and vases along with a cake underwater is almost an impossible and somewhat of a laughable thought. How on earth were we going to tackle such a logistical challenge? The team met, put their thinking caps on, and pitched in with different ideas to make this shoot a success. On the actual day we were all equally nervous as to whether our logistics would work in practice. By the end of the shoot, at 11 pm, after a 19-hour working day, we all sat on the floor in awe of the images we had produced. What an honour to work with such an incredibly talented team. u PAGE 88

The importance of wedding décor should never be neglected or overlooked. Wedding maestro Aleit Swanepoel of The Aleit Group explains how to use embellishments to create a sophisticated, elegant or minimalist appearance, with unique décor to establish the look and feel that each bride opts for, and which also reflects the essence of the bridal couple. For the table setting a minimalist, trendy look will never be outdated. A clear, cylindrical vase with natural greens or single stem flowers such as lilies or the chicory tree can be a showstopper. The ‘Old man’s beard’ is also sought-after this wedding season. My signature look on a table is to have the runners spread across the width of the table as opposed to straight down the middle. This ensures linear perfection and uniformity on each table.

The classic wrought iron garden chair can be transformed into a stunning feature when completed by a comfortable crisp white pillow and bouquets. A selection of species of our indigenous South African national flower, the Protea, wrapped with a nautical-themed ribbon is what was used here. A fusion of chairs at a ceremony breaks that monotonous look. Don’t be afraid of bringing a variety of chairs into the mix for the ceremony. Options include church benches and ottomans – even a chair from mom’s house will give your ceremony the ‘X’ factor. Creating lounge pockets are the perfect fillers for the pre-drinks area or those lonely spaces next to the dance floor. Use options such as perfectly squared gazebo frames dressed with soft cream, tulle or crisp white linen to create lounge pockets.

Textured arrangements of various heights, shapes and sizes, contrasted with orchids with exposed roots in glass vases offers the required simplicity that will remain fashionable. Silver tablecloths with perspex Tiffany chairs will ground the look, ensuring an evening of glamour. My personal take on this centrepiece is to add some nostalgia with picture frames with pictures of family member’s wedding’s – going back generations – surrounding the wedding cake.

DECOR

Wedding cakes have been part of the marriage ceremony ever since medieval times. Historically wedding cakes have always been white, the symbolism being that the colour white has always denoted purity. Today there are many variations of the wedding cake and there are no rules! Examples include the buttercream cake, the naked cake, a fresh dessertstyled cake, the chalkboard cake, the chocolate cake, and even a sequined or glitter cake. A rustic cake can be adorned with fresh flowers by your florist, in line with the theme throughout your reception area. A white ABS aisle is a great surface for a printed vinyl of the couple’s vows, favourite poem or their monogram.

For this beach wedding this striking gazebo enhances the backdrop of the crystal blue ocean. Giant white paper flowers and fresh dendrobium orchids adorning a giant gazebo can be the talk of the town. This offers the ceremony the perfect sacredness it deserves. This is truly one of the most spectacular ways in which to embark on a journey of happiness forever! u

Leon certainly made his proposal in an unusual setting. Says Sarah: “While snorkeling in Hawaii he pointed to a little ‘coral cove’ – and then pulled out the ring with the other hand! After dragging my eyes away from the sparkle, I made my way to the surface to take my snorkel mask off to try and look a little pretty for the big moment. After what felt like forever, Leon said ‘Will you make me the happiest man in the world and marry me?’.” On their wedding day Sarah’s ‘something old’ was her mom’s veil, and her ‘something borrowed’ was a hairclip from designer Kathrin Kidger, who made the bridesmaids’ dresses. ‘Something new’ was her wedding dress, as well as pearl earrings which Leon gave her on the morning of their wedding, and ‘something blue’ was the evil eye on her garter, from one of her maids of honour. Their wedding ceremony was traditional, and Sarah’s minister and family friend performed the marriage. “We had a few of the boys from the Michaelhouse choir sing, which added to the romance of the already beautiful chapel. Arriving at the chapel with the bells ringing just set the scene totally, and walking down the aisle was definitely something I will never forget. I just wanted to run to Leon and give him a big kiss! I still get butterflies thinking about it.” The guests then went to the stables at Orchards to enjoy Pimms and lemonade, drinks and snacks which had a carnival feel with fresh popcorn, candy floss, lawn games and a performance by local band No Fly Zone. Sarah and Leon had their photos taken during this time, but joined for drinks for a while, where they got to listen to their MC sing a song that he had written for them. Then they all proceeded to the beautiful hall of Orchards: “This hosted the many laughs, delicious champagne, amazing food, special words, fantastic dance moves and happy memories during the night. A definite highlight was the dessert of Dom Pedros and the most amazing

LONG-DISTANCE LOVE YOLAAN BEGBIE & HAMET AGUEMON

DUAL CELEBRATION

31.01.2015 VENUE: LA RESIDENCE HOTEL,

Yolaan is from Cape Town and Hamet is from Cotonou in Benin, and this couple met in Boston, USA, the day after Valentine’s Day in 2013 while both attending the Africa Business Conference at Harvard

FRANSCHHOEK

University. Yolaan was living in New York at the time and Hamet in

DÉCOR STYLE: ELEGANT AND

Dubai. Says Hamet: “We dated long distance for 8 months (speaking

on FaceTime every single day, despite the 9-hour time difference, and meeting for a few days in a different country every month) before Yolaan moved to Dubai.” PAGE 104

REAL WEDDING For the proposal Hamet surprised Yolaan with a weekend away at Bab al Shams, a luxurious desert resort just outside Dubai. “We spent the afternoon at the pool and then went to our room to get ready for dinner. Then Hamet came to sit next to me and began to recite a love letter he had written. He went down on his knees and I was giggling throughout, thinking he was just being romantic. I didn’t realise he was proposing until he pulled a ring box from under the pillow. He later showed me the narrated video he made with the jeweller while they were making the ring. We then went for a sunset camel ride in the desert before having a rooftop dinner.” Yolaan describes their whole wedding day as “dreamy”. They enjoyed being surrounded by people they love, many of whom had travelled from far to share their day. The bride’s favourite moment was walking down the aisle to Louis Armstrong’s version of ‘La vie en rose’, then dancing to Brenda Fassie’s ‘Wedding day’ after being announced husband and wife. The groom had two highlights: “Walking down the aisle with mother and when Yolaan walked in. My heart was going boom boom and when she walked in I felt calm.” Since they have different religious backgrounds – Yolaan is Christian and Hamet is Muslim – they kept the ceremony as interfaith. The wedding day was also Yolaan’s 30th birthday – so the day was truly a celebration of life and love. The bride had three wedding gowns: the first couture princess style, the second a traditional West African dress and the third a red carpet-style party dress. The first and third were created by family friend Jacques la Grange. Yolaan first met Jacques more than

10 years ago while looking for a matric ball dress. He made the dress for her matric ball, the dress for her 21st birthday, the maid of honour’s dress for her sister’s wedding (and her sister’s wedding dress). The second dress was a gift from Yolaan’s mother-in-law. The fabric was sourced in Nigeria and made by a designer in Benin. This couple’s advice? “The day speeds by and it can be overwhelming, so sneak away for a few minutes to allow yourselves to be still and take it all in. Also, if you can, leave for honeymoon immediately after. The whole process can be quite exhausting, so you’ll want to relax and soak up and enjoy all that just-married goodness.”

DREAMS COME TRUE LIZELLE COLLIN & MARVIN PILLAY

FAIRYTALE ROMANCE

This couple met at work – the ultimate blend of ‘mixing business with pleasure’. Lizelle tells us what happened: “I was at my desk at work when I saw a really attractive (and seemingly shy) guy at my boss’s PC.

“Then one day Marvin couldn’t hold it in any longer and said to me, ‘I really like you, and would you be my girlfriend?’ I wondered what took him so long! From that day on the romantic story is still being written.” On 25 November 2012 Marvin pampered Lizelle with a day spa treatment, and after that he blindfolded her and took her to the Montecasino air balloon in Johannesburg, where he had a huge poster saying ‘Lizelle would you marry me?’. They say that the highlight of their wedding was seeing all their hard work and long planning come together. “It looked like the real fairytale wedding I have always dreamt of. Walking down to the altar, seeing all my family and friends with that proud look, and not forgetting seeing my husband with tears in his eyes, were really special moments.” Lizelle’s advice for those of you planning your big day is to enjoy planning your wedding: “It’s really a joy to see your beautiful ideas all in one room. The memories are worth it. And keep smiling – you are going to have your lovely photos forever!” Lizelle and Marvin spent their honeymoon in Mauritius. u THOMAS VIDEO AND PHOTOGRAPHY

“The bus driver had become tired, so they had to make the stop. The last boy to get off the bus was Marcel. My heart was racing as I turned to my dad and said ‘That is the man I am going to marry one day’. “To everyone this was quite the joke. We spent the night talking about life and our dreams, and taking a dip in the ice-cold pool. That has always been our number one thing – to have fun together. That morning at 6 a.m., when we finally said ‘good night’ on the first night of forever, Marcel looked at me and said ‘I love you’. And that is how it all started. That was when we were 15.” Marcel’s mother passed away from breast cancer a couple of years ago, and they wanted to honour her on their wedding day. “She was such an amazing person, a driving force behind many things that has made Marcel the man he is today. She is and always will be an inspiration to both of us. We decided to ask the Polo Club at Val de Vie to play their polo match with a pink ball. Marcel and his groomsmen wore pink socks as well as pink hand-knitted roses. I also wore bright pink shoes. We knew that she would love this, and wanted her to be a part of our big day in some special way. “We decided to honour my grandfather, who has also passed away – and who would have loved to be by my side on this day – by handing each guest a KitKat chocolate, as this was his favourite.”

“When I arrived he took my hand and led me to where he had set up an incredibly romantic table surrounded by fairy lights. When I took off my blindfold, he was down on one knee. On the walk to the ceremony we placed old photographs of our parents’ and grandparents’ weddings in frames on the trees. It was like a memory lane leading up to our ceremony! “The ceremony was one of our favourite parts of the wedding. Nothing can prepare you for the emotions you feel as you say your vows to the person you love the most in the world! “We introduced an old Irish tradition called Hand Tying into the ceremony. Ribbons are passed between the guests, who bless them with well wishes for your future. The ribbons are then tied around the couple’s hands by their family members, binding their lives to one another. It was a very special and unique part of our big day. “Instead of having a jar of rose petals as confetti we had a confetti bar. Each different type of confetti – from fynbos and petals to little daisies, was a different blessing; happiness, love, adventure, etc. The guests could then choose their different confetti for their lace confetti cones based on the wishes they wanted to throw on us! “After the ceremony we had a wonderful market between the vineyards. It was a wonderful way to pass the time between the ceremony and the reception. “Instead of having the first dance during the reception, after the market we had all the guests congregate in the reception venue courtyard. We then entered the reception by doing our first dance. It was a fun alternative to the traditional timeline and an amazing way to start the reception festivities!” Tash’s ‘something old’ was a piece of her mom’s wedding dress, sewn as a little heart into the bottom of her dress. Their advice to those of you planning your own weddings is to plan early, and don’t leave things until the last minute. “Get the boring stuff done first, like your Antenuptial Contract. You don’t want to be rushing around in the weeks before your wedding. Remember to enjoy every moment. “Well I say we were meant for each other, because we always seem to find our way back to how much we love each other. We do this in many ways, but most importantly we never forget who we are and what we mean to each other. Hence we decided that our wedding theme would be ‘Back to love’! “He proposed at our engagement dinner hosted at the One & Only Hotel, Cape Town, since in our culture the man officially proposes only after he has gone through the lobola negotiations.” Unathi says that she had not expected to enjoy her wedding, but did! “As the bride you are stressed out about how things are going to go – but I truly enjoyed myself and had complete fun. I am grateful that my 96-year-old grandmother could come to the wedding and that all the people I hold dear to my heart were there to witness and support me on my big day.” The highlight of her wedding day was walking down the aisle “to be wedded to the love of my life”. u

Paul in Durbanville. That was where the sparks began!” PAGE 136

She loved the way he proposed to her: “If you have to imagine the most perfect romantic getaway, here are a few things that might pop into your head … a secluded cottage in the mountains, champagne on ice, chocolates, rose petals sprinkled over the bed, a romantic candlelit dinner, and of course someone special to share this moment with. This is exactly what happened on Valentine’s Day 2014. “Just as I thought this night couldn’t get better, Paul went down on his knee, with the most beautiful ring that I have ever seen. There were small candles on the ground, spelling the words ‘Will you marry me?’. With a shocked but excited ‘Yes!’, I burst into tears! I thought that nothing could top this moment, until one year later, on the day of love, 14 February 2015, we exchanged our wedding vows. “We got married at the most beautiful venue, Towerbosch, in Stellenbosch. The name of the venue says it all! No words can describe the feelings inside when I was walking down the aisle with my father, seeing all of our friends and loved ones and being awaited by my husband-to-be. He had the widest smile that I have ever seen! “The entire day felt like a fairytale and it was literally a case of feeling love in the air – not only between me and my groom, but everyone present. The highlight of our wedding day was when the pastor said ‘I now pronounce you husband and wife, you may kiss the bride!’ I could not wait to kiss my husband and sign the register with my new signature as Mrs Van Rensburg. “After the ceremony things kicked into the next gear, and the party started. The reception was very intimate, with a calm and loving atmosphere. This was the most amazing day of our lives, and exceeded our expectations – even better than the version I dreamt of! We know that this is the start of our ‘Happily ever after’ journey, and cannot wait to walk this road together.” Their advice for future brides and grooms is not to worry about too much detail and to remember what the actual meaning of the day is. “Start planning well in advance and on the day of the wedding, embrace every moment and don’t stress about the small things. No-one else will notice if something goes wrong. The cliché ‘enjoy the day, because it goes by so fast’ is an understatement, because in a blink of an eye the last song starts to play. So enjoy it to the max!”u

Angeline tells us how it went down: “It was a normal Sunday – we visited Leon’s parents and left at noon. As we were driving home, Leon handed me tickets to go and watch a live performance that evening. After the show we had drinks and drove back home. Halfway back he blindfolded me and told me to guess where we were. We took a left turn then a right, made a U-turn, and I was completely lost. “The car eventually stopped, he helped me out, down some stairs then up over a hill, and there we stopped. As I took off the blindfold, the man of my dreams was on one knee in front of me with the scenic view of Pretoria’s lights in the background. And so it was that on 14 September 2014 we got engaged at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.” She says that the highlight of her wedding day was the special moment she had with her dad right before the doors opened and he walked her down the aisle. “The most special moment of my day was when the doors opened and I saw my husband-to-be crying, waiting so proudly and in love.” Their advice for those of you planning your own special day: “Laugh, have fun and spend time making memories that will last forever. And don’t just be a married couple – be best friends.”

A MARVELLOUS TIME ZANELLE CALITZ & RYNO LE GRANGE

Make Over OUT OF OUDTSHOORN

11.04.2015

Zanelle and Ryno first started dating when they were at Oudtshoorn High School in 2008. “Ryno used to spoil me with

flowers and ice cream after rugby training. Since the first day Ryno saw me in the gym his soul kind of went ‘Oh there you are, I’ve been looking for you’.” They have moved on far from those days, and now live in Australia.

PAGE 144

REAL WEDDING

Zanelle tells how Ryno proposed to her: “We were on holiday in Ko Samui in the Gulf of Thailand on 11 December 2012. Ryno planned a romantic private dinner on the beach. The hotel kept it a secret from me, saying that the family had to attend a formal dinner. We all got dressed up. At the beach Ryno organised two musicians, and while they were serenading us he proposed! It was a breathtaking moment with a beautiful backdrop.

PAGE 145

REAL WEDDING

They decided that because the wedding day goes by so fast, they would like to make the most of the weekend and show their Australian friends how we celebrate on this side of the world. “The night before the wedding a mountain braai was held at Zorgvliet with close friends and family, and the day after the wedding we had a picnic at the venue to finish off the wedding celebrations!” During the ceremony Roelien Grobbleaar played beautiful background music on the harp. The couple wrote their own personalised vows to one another. The groom is a big fan of Marvel Comics, and decided to wear the Marvel Agents of S.H.I.E.LD. symbol as his boutonniere. He also bought Marvel suspenders and bowtie for the ring bearer. Adds Zanelle: “Just as a fair exchange for the rings, Ryno had a Thor doll waiting for him in front too.” They say that their sneak peek at the reception hall took their breath away. “Everything was perfect, from the bon bon table to the flowers, lights, relaxing sofas and our cheese wedding cake (table de gateau de mariage).” As I am sure you can tell, this couple likes to do things differently. The bride wore hand-painted shoes from Turkey which were made for her by Leonie, her mother-in-law. “The one shoe had pictures of the engagement in Ko Samui, the date and my maiden name, and the other shoe had the wedding date, venue chapel and bride and groom’s name on it. For the garter, we decided to make our own using some ostrich feathers from Oudtshoorn, a symbol to remind us of our journey that started in high school.” They also didn’t throw the bouquet. “We asked which couple had been married the longest, and they were given the flowers. They will become an inspiration for us.” Their advice to you future brides and grooms? “Relax, enjoy every moment and have some fun. Have a look at your reception before any of the guests go in. It is a beautiful picture that will stay with you forever.”u PAGE 146

PLANNING

A FEW SIMPLE RULES TO PLANNING THE PERFECT WEDDING WORDS BY GARETH KENNA

Old women the world over will tell you that ageing isn’t for sissies – and this holds true for marriage as well. It’s a marathon of epic proportions, to be embarked on and survived despite great odds. The big day itself comes with lots of challenges – so here we provide some (tongue in cheek) tips to help you get on with your planning. It all starts with the exquisite trauma of the

Successful weddings are designed in one of two ways: to please the families of the bride and groom, or to please their friends. You cannot please both, so don’t even try. Your mother didn’t approve of most of your friends

PLANNING

Here we are talking about your bridesmaids’ and not yours. To be fair, this is another of those ‘damned if you do, damned if you don’t’ scenarios where nobody will win. It all comes down to an excess of expectation. The bridal party expects to look pretty (laughable really, as reality television in recent years has shown), and you expect them to look numerous. And therein lies their downfall, because the more bridesmaids you have, the more risk you run of body shape raising its diverse and ugly head. Bad colours and awful fabrics aside, there has yet to be a dress designed that is capable of bridging the great divide between a size 2 and a size 14. Perhaps the recent wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton offers a solution to this little problem: if the future Queen of England can make do with a single bridesmaid, then surely so can you? (Although in retrospect, perhaps a less comely size 2 candidate in favour of a more ‘bride-friendly’ model?) Like I said, ‘damned if you do’, etc.

PLANNING

Your groom’s and not yours … Just kidding! Who ever heard that anything special about a wedding ever featured the groom?

Cake by Roxanne Floquet Photograph by Zara Zoo PAGE 158

PLANNING

This is the Holy Grail of wedding planning – because, let’s face it, if a picture paints a thousand words, it paints them to last forever. So do what you have to – omit from the guest list who you must, eat less on the day (and every day before that), beg, borrow, and if need be steal – to be able to afford the best photographer and book available to you. You’ve been rehearsing, staging and developing this day since you were 10 – make sure the record reflects that effort. And don’t be too hard on the groom … with so much riding on the perfect day, he’s sure to get it wrong at least half of the time. But look carefully … that goofy look you’re dreading won’t reach his eyes – love-filled, there won’t be room – and as old ladies will tell you: “Love will conquer all”. u

ARNISTON SPA HOTEL

ARNISTON SPA HOTEL, ARNISTON, WESTERN CAPE Voted by Time magazine as one of the world’s top 10 hideaways, Arniston is a leisurely two-hour drive from Cape Town. The four-star Arniston Spa Hotel is a superb setting for a special wedding and honeymoon. WORDS BY SUSAN SMIT Set in the Overberg, in one of the Cape’s most exquisite locations next to the old fishing village of Kassiesbaai, Arniston Spa Hotel offers breathtaking sea views and 60 luxurious rooms, all equipped with the comforts of a world-class hotel. The restaurant is well-known for its scrumptious breakfast buffet, delectable and relaxed lunches and fine dinners, complemented by an award-winning wine list. Add to this the presence of the Ginkgo Spa at the hotel, and you have a setting made in heaven. The Spa’s facilities include a Rasul (a Turkish steam chamber), two saunas, three multi-purpose treatment rooms, a twin treatment room and a soothing tranquility lounge. Arniston Spa Hotel’s wedding planner, Robbie Haywood, outlines why it is a great choice for a wedding package. “Everything is available here in this amazing setting, and the whole hotel can be booked out for a wedding (maximum 120 guests). There are local suppliers such as make-up and hair specialists, and wedding cake bakers, and we can recommend any service providers from flowers, free-form coverings and photography to gazebos, draping, décor and music. The harbour and beach make for beautiful pictures. “Ceremonies can be held in either the village’s quaint little church, on the hotel lawn overlooking the ocean, or on the beach. Wedding celebrations are tailor-made to your specifications and either held in one of the restaurants or on the front lawn of the hotel in a tent. Should your celebrations include music and dancing, the hotel will be your exclusive venue for the day and night of your wedding. And of course there are plenty of spa treatments to choose from! Our wine cellar also makes for a quaint and romantic venue if you have a small wedding party, and accommodates 30 people around a long Oregon pine table.” The 60 luxurious rooms of this hotel are all en suite and equipped with world-class amenities. The seafront rooms have spectacular views, and you can drift off to sleep with the sound of the waves breaking on your doorstep. There are also inter-leading rooms for families, as well as fireplaces in some of the pool view rooms for those cosy winter evenings.
