an you believe that we are already heading into the month of October? Is it just me or is this year passing by at an exceptionally fast rate? Next month marks six months until Australia hosts the Commonwealth Games – the fifth time our country has had the honour. And, while our neighbouring city, the Gold Coast, will be in the spotlight, our region will be in on the action. The Games are expected to contribute more than $2 billion to the Queensland economy and the Sunshine Coast is tipped to reap some of the benefits. There are at least three teams who are using our facilities for training and accommodation. Visiting tourists are also expected to make the short journey north to take advantage of our relaxed lifestyle and beautiful environment. There are a number of Coast residents gearing up to represent not only their country, but our region, at the games. One of these is Tessa Wallace – a Caloundra athlete who is on a mission. You can read her story on page 8. From sport to style, there is something for everyone in My Weekly Preview. You will find our wedding feature on page 32. CRAZY FOR COCONUTS Where on the Sunshine Coast do you live? Mount Ninderry, in the foothills of the Sunshine Coast green belt. First job? I spent two years as a seaman, sailing around the Pacific Ocean. What are you currently working on? I created the first yoghurt made from coconut milk and so my work continues down the same path, testing and trialling new ideas and recipes every day with our great COYO team. At the moment we’re working on expanding our product range, looking into other foods and recipes that will allow us to continue to bring dairy freedom to everyone.

Born and raised in Fiji, COYO co-founder Henry Gosling knows his coconuts. As a child he collected and prepared coconuts for the family dinners. Fast forward to 2009 when he was living a semi-retired life with wife Sandra on the Sunshine Coast and he had the idea to make yoghurt from coconuts. After six months of testing, the Goslings made their first commercial batch of COYO, a product that is now sold all over the world.
Favourite book? My favourite book has to be Fiji by Daryl Tarte. It’s a great read that details the history of Fiji from the time of the wars between the Tongans and Fijians, and then slowly follows through to the Indians as indenture labour, to the first coup. It is riveting reading and very close to me. What are you reading now? I just finished Fiji, so nothing in particular at the moment, although I’m doing a lot of travelling with work so am definitely on the hunt for my next

Can you nominate a day in your life that turned out to be a turning point? June 9, 2009. [The day Henry first thought about making coconut yoghurt.]
What achievement are you most proud of? Sticking to my passion and a world first in both COYO and the food genre that is coconut yoghurt. You are happiest when? When I’m spending time with my family and enjoying a relaxing Saturday afternoon with my feet up, reading the newspaper. If you could tell your 18-year-old self anything, what would it be? needed to make it in the fast lane. But her path to success has been fraught with health and injury hurdles. Wallace was selected for the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games when she was 16 years old and went on to win a silver medal in the 200-metre breaststroke behind Leisel Jones. Two years later, in 2012, Wallace qualified for the London Olympics and
Taylor McKeown came to the fore and later went on to win 200-metre breaststroke gold medal. Wallace finished eighth. Wallace tells My Weekly Preview she decided to take 2016 off in a bid to rejuvenate her body and rediscover her passion for competitive swimming. She has spent this year focusing on having “a good crack” at the Commonwealth Games.

I
t is a sporting event unlike anything regional Australia has ever seen before and in a little over six months’ time, it will take over the Gold Coast. It is the XXI Commonwealth Games. From April 4 to 15, more than 6600 athletes and team officials from 70 nations will converge on the Gold Coast to compete in 23 sports. They’ll be supported by about 15,000 volunteers, their every event watched by a global audience of 1.5 billion people. The Sunshine Coast won’t miss out on the action. Our region has attracted interest from international teams, including the 300-strong Team Scotland, which will be based at the Novotel Twin Waters Resort and use facilities at the University of the Sunshine Coast in the lead-up to the Games. Team Wales will also base its athletics and swimming teams on the Coast, along with the smaller Isle of Man team and the 50-strong Team Niue, which will use the Sunshine Coast Recreation Centre in Currimundi for pre-games training. While the only official event to be held in our region is the Queen’s Baton Relay, which will pass through Caloundra on March 27, there is no shortage of talented local athletes who are already knuckling down to prepare for a tilt at the Games. Among them is Tessa Wallace. The 27-year-old Caloundra swimmer is no stranger to the extreme dedication
despite battling a bout of Ross River Fever, she advanced to the semi-finals of the women’s 200-metre breaststroke and finished with the 15th-best time overall. It was at the end of 2012 that Wallace was diagnosed with Lyme disease and began to come to terms with what that would mean for her competitive career. By 2014, she was back in form and qualified for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, just scraping on to the team in third place as fellow Sunshine Coast teenager
“I am hoping to come away with a medal and I’m really striving for that gold,” she says. “This will be one of the toughest Games – there are a lot of big competitors in the line-up, so it will be an exciting Games. I definitely can’t let my guard down.” Australian swimmers will have to wait until five weeks out from the Games’ opening ceremony before competing for a spot in the green and gold team. But one thing Wallace is mindful of
doing is pushing herself too hard. Living with the extreme fatigue and muscle aches associated with Lyme disease has forced the athlete to learn how to find her own balance between training with her father John at the Caloundra Aquatic Centre, working at a Caloundra real estate business and competing. “I need to make sure I stick to my strict diet to keep my immune system strong and don’t overtrain,” she says. “It’s about being smart and I’ve learnt that as I’ve gotten older. “Like any athlete, I’ve had a couple of injuries here and there, but getting through them only makes you stronger. I’ve had my ups and downs and hopefully this preparation is the one that’s going to really click and show off my true potential at the Games next year.” Wallace says before her self-imposed 2016 break, she found herself “trying to push through a brick wall,” not only physically straining her body, but mentally putting too much on her plate. “There were a lot of breakdowns, and I knew that I wasn’t going to be swimming at my full potential if I kept going like this,” she says. “I came back gradually, and surprised myself with a reasonably good time at trials this year, where I came second in the 200-metre breaststroke and just missed myweeklypreview.com.au

I was still extremely happy with my time and it gave me a good insight into what I’m capable of come next year.” Training has already kicked up a notch for Wallace, as it has for dozens of other hopefuls across the region. Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC) chairman Peter Beattie says the Sunshine Coast is poised to play an important role in the success of the Games. “We already have 120 volunteers from the Sunshine Coast who have signed on to assist with the operations of the Games, and the Queen’s Baton Relay will come through the Sunshine Coast. So people will have the opportunity to see it and be a part of it as millions of people would have from around the world,” he says. “There are still tickets available if people want to get down to the Games and watch these impressive athletes compete live, with free public transport to the Gold Coast included with every ticket. “Residents will also be able to watch the international teams who are basing themselves on the Sunshine Coast train before the Games begin.” Speaking to My Weekly Preview while on the Sunshine Coast last week, Beattie says GOLDOC will accept the handover of the $550 million, 29-hectare Parklands athletes village from developer Grocon in just three weeks, marking the completion of the infrastructure needed for the Games. “Preparations are on budget and on

And unlike many other Games held around the world, every sporting venue for the Games, which are
located on the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Townsville, and Cairns, were already in existence and in great shape, so we’ll have everything done well in advance of the Games and ensure they are in tip-top shape by the time the athletes arrive.” Visit Sunshine Coast CEO Simon Latchford says the region will reap the rewards that will come from not only being geographically located close to the Goldie, but also from the legwork put in by the Sunshine Coast Council earlier this year. “Sporting-type events have delivered well in excess of $100 million in value in terms of visitation in the last couple of years and their benefits must not be underestimated,” Latchford says. “The council had a stroke of genius and went out to try and attract countries to use the Sunshine Coast as a training ground in the lead-up to the games. Not only do the teams come, but their support mechanisms come and so do their friends and relatives. It is incredibly clever and we are doing what we can to leverage off it. “And, ironically, they will spend longer here training than they will at the actual Commonwealth Games, so they will be eating, drinking, filling up their cars with petrol, and paying for accommodation here. These benefits spread the wealth throughout the entire community, not just those directly linked with tourism.” Latchford says once the Coast “does what it’s so good at – making people feel welcome”, there will undoubtedly be continuing flow-on effects with athletes and spectators staying on or gravitating from the Gold Coast up to the Sunshine Coast pre- or post-Games to see what we are all about. “In terms of direct and indirect expenditure, we are looking at millions and millions in economic benefit to the region,” he says. “The creation of destination awareness is something we cannot put a dollar value on. It’s that substantial.”

Ashlea Gierke in her competitive days Picture this: you have trained for five hours a day in the pool for more than a year, competed in countless national and international swim meets and done quite well. But when the time comes for the London Olympic trials, you miss the Olympic Trial final by 0.03. This is the reality of radio presenter Ashlea Gierke, a third of the Hot 91.1 breakfast show. The 27-year-old was a competitive swimmer for 15 years before giving up on her sport after the trials for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014, where she was once again cruelly dealt a blow by missing out on team selection by a rabbit’s whisker. “[Co-hosts Dave Matthews and Sam Coward] call me the Nearlympian because I just missed out, but the thing is that in swimming, there’s never much in it ever,” Gierke says. “At the time it was hard, because I had done a PB, but at the same time, it wasn’t quite where I wanted to be. Years of training come down to that one moment and if you are not in complete, amazing condition, it can be anyone’s race.” Gierke says it will be amazing for the Coast’s athletes to compete in front of a home crowd next year and as she watches some of the swimmers she used to compete against take to the starting blocks, she will know the dedication and hard work that led them to that point. “These athletes make a lot of sacrifices and work every single day to make their dream of being a Commonwealth Games athlete come true,” she says. “To be able to do that while living on the Sunshine Coast is the perfect combination for athletes here. “Get behind our locals and check out the countries who will be here for pre-camps, so you can really get inspired. Hopefully our younger athletes will also be inspired by these Games to go on and achieve their sporting dreams.” Gierke says she has no inclination to return to swimming competitively, and enjoys taking on the guys over the airwaves.

TIME TO GET INTO GEAR FOR BUDERIM 9 CHALLENGE Are you up for the challenge of one, three, or nine hills? Cyclists can enter now for the Buderim 9 Challenge to find out when the event comes to town again in December. Now in its sixth year, organisers are gearing up to welcome avid cyclists to face the challenge of cycling up (and down) nine of Buderim’s toughest hills to raise awareness and funds for Sunshine Coast disability service, CPL, and they are calling on you to join them. Josh Paix, who lives with cerebral palsy and is a regular B9 participant, is challenging cyclists out there to tackle the 76-kilometre course and as many of Buderim’s nine hills as they can in three hours. “Cyclists from across the country, our local cycling clubs and even some from overseas will converge on the streets of Buderim and gear themselves up to ‘Get Over It’ for this unique challenge,” Paix says. Australian champion cyclist Henk Vogels will return as the challenge ambassador and a new category will allow a team of three cyclists to take on three hills each. Last year’s event saw 250 riders, nine sponsors and countless local businesses come on board to help raise more than $24,000 to support children and families on the Sunshine Coast with cerebral palsy. The council has set up an online survey as a part of its consultation process over the Maroochy River mouth groyne replacement issue. This survey has extended the consultation period to October 6. MALCOLM TURNBULL MAKES A FLYING VISIT TO COAST Hundreds of people packed into the Caloundra RSL to catch Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull on his first visit to Caloundra last Thursday night. Hot topics of the evening included same-sex marriage, energy prices, and the government’s desire to return the budget to surplus by 2020/21. Referring to his opponent, Opposition Leader Bill Shorten, as Blackout Bill on numerous occasions, Turnbull says there is a strong need for backup and storage for the electricity grid and says the gas shortage on the east coast is another significant problem and one he has tackled with restrictions on gas exports.
FETAL ALCOHOL DISORDER WORKERS GET $1.3M BOOST A $1.3-million Federal Government funding boost will expand Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service’s ability to care for children dealing with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) and their families. The funding will result in an increase in the total number of clients by 45 per year and will run until 2020. The Child Development Service was relocated from Nambour General Hospital to a larger space at Wises Road in Maroochydore in 2014 and service director Dr Heidi Webster says early diagnosis and support is essential for children with a FASD.
SPECIAL HONOURS BESTOWED AT GRADUATION The poet behind Gallipoli, Homecoming and Enter Without So Much As Knocking, has received an Honorary Doctorate at a University of the Sunshine Coast graduation ceremony. Dr Bruce Dawe is 87 years old and still teaches classes in poetry. USC staged four graduation ceremonies at the Matthew Flinders Performance Centre in Buderim on Thursday, with more than 400 graduates receiving degrees and certificates. Coolum signwriter Steve Hall also received an Honorary Senior Fellowship for his continued support of USC’s Design study program.
A Nambour General Hospital (NGH) specialist has been awarded a prestigious research grant by the Emergency Medicine Foundation for her work to improve emergency care for older people. NGH specialist Dr Elizabeth Marsden has received a $100,000 research grant to evaluate ways of extending the flagship Geriatric Emergency Department Intervention (GEDI) program to other hospitals in Queensland. The program, established at NGH over several years, has brought major improvements to the care of the elderly. The program, which is now also operating at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital, involves specially trained nurses, who are the single point of contact for elderly patients.
VALE JOHN GALLINA John Gallina, the man at the helm of Sunshine Coast’s disaster management program, has been hailed a logistical expert, a calming influence under pressure, a man of compassion, a consummate professional and a gentle giant. Gallina passed away unexpectedly on September 24 while holidaying with family on Hamilton Island. Mayor Mark Jamieson says his leadership contributed immensely to our community’s preparedness and resilience during natural disasters. “John was a gentleman whose passion for the region was exemplified through his service in protecting Queenslanders through his service with Queensland Fire and Rescue, as well as his work coordinating Sunshine Coast Council’s disaster response.”

A Sunshine Coast veteran returned to Timor-Leste to promote peace and renewal in the troubled nation.
F
ormer Sunshine Coast soldier Eric Kerr has been in Timor-Leste on another tour of duty, but instead of donning the camos, this time he wore Lycra and pedalled for peace. Kerr, an army veteran of East Timor and Iraq, was leading a team in the gruelling Tour de Timor. Kerr, Emmett Karstrom, Jon King and Mike Prince were competing against 380 other riders in taking on the five-day, multi-stage race, which ran from September 19 to 23 and covered around 500 kilometres, including a total of 10,000 metres of climbing. The team was representing Caloundra-based not-for-profit organisation The Encouragement Foundation, which provides safe and supervised dormitory accommodation through Encouragement House in Maliana for remote, rural students so they can have the opportunity to go to high school. Kerr previously visited Timor-Leste on a United Nations Transitional Administration East Timor mission in 2000 to co-ordinate resupply and distribution of logistics. “Even when presented with hardship, the Timorese people remain positive and value
Mike Prince, Jon King, Emmett Karstrom and Eric Kerr at the start line. their family as the most important element in their life,” Kerr says. “Every day you spend with the Timorese, the more infectious their enthusiasm and willingness to move forward as a nation shines through.” Kerr says he was well-prepared for the gruelling race, with decades of running,
riding and surfing on the Sunshine Coast under his belt, as well as regular exercise through his role as the under 12 Age Manager at Alexandra Headland Surf Life Saving Club. “I’ve been road riding since I was 13 years old and participating in triathlons in more recent years, but I’m new to mountain
biking and I must say in the past few weeks I have learnt the hard way on a few of the technical courses on the Sunshine Coast, entertaining as it was with a number of hard falls,” he says. Kerr’s goal reaches beyond simply raising awareness of Encouragement House and completing the race. He wants to promote the rebuilding of Timor-Leste through sport and education rather than through war and unrest. “It is important in life to contribute to a greater cause and make a difference to people who are not as fortunate as we are living in Australia. For the Timorese, they are rich in culture and value the family as their centre of gravity, which I admire,” he says. “The Tour de Timor is a story of human determination, of courage, of rich culture, of untouched natural wilderness, of international sporting excellence, of young Timorese national heroes and of a resilient people who are embracing and celebrating peace in their young nation.”

SUPPORT CHILDREN LIKE AUSTIN
Childhood illness can be devastating for children and their families, but you can help by digging deep. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.
A
ustin Lynch was just starting school early last year when his energetic personality began to wane. At first, doctors thought it might be anxiety at such a big change that was causing him to become lethargic and withdrawn. But when one side of his face began to droop, Austin’s mum Sarah quickly took him to the hospital. Their lives were never the same again. A CT scan showed Austin had a huge tumour in his throat. Within hours, he was rushed to the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital where he endured a series of tests and scans, which revealed he had Burkitt lymphoma – a rare and extremely aggressive form of childhood cancer. Austin’s family was given the devastating news that the disease had already spread through his central nervous system and into his liver and kidneys, and that his chance of survival could be as low as 70 per cent. Austin, who is from Maroochydore, had to endure multiple lumbar punctures, general anaesthetics and six months of

intensive chemotherapy, resulting in countless hospital admissions. The chemo made Austin so sick, he couldn’t eat or keep any food down. He needed a nasogastric tube in order to keep his nutrient levels up and to stop him from losing too much weight.
At just six years of age, Austin was so scared about what was happening that his medical team decided to limit how many doctors were allowed in his room at one time, while his parents and the nursing staff worked hard to build back his trust. As part of this, Austin enjoyed the
distraction of the services provided by the Children’s Hospital Foundation including bravery beads, bedside play and music therapy. He now no longer has a nasogastric tube, but his eating habits have been affected by his treatment. Good nutrition will continue to be a focus for him on his road to recovery. The young Sunshine Coast boy is one of the faces of the Children’s Hospital Foundation and Woolworths’ Regional Wall Token Campaign, which raises funds for distractive therapy resources, interactive play equipment and toys at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital. Children’s Hospital Foundation CEO Rosie Simpson is calling on people to purchase a $2 token from Woolworths until October 1. Simpson says since the launch of the partnership began 30 years ago, more than $50 million has been raised to help fund lifesaving research, vital medical equipment and support programs for thousands of sick kids. “Childhood illness hurts. It hurts the kids who must endure it and it hurts their families,” Simpson says.

Sami Muirhead has returned from her Greek island adventure with wisdom on leading a happy life imparted by a fabulous 78-year-old.
I
had to travel 32 hours to the Greek islands to meet one of the wisest ladies I have ever known and ask her advice on being happy, being happily married and feeling OK when we look in the mirror. It was done surrounded by groves of lemon, bay and olive trees on the island of Lesbos. The island borders the Aegean ocean and is incredibly rich in minerals, which are found in the ocean. Many bath in the waters there, as they say it helps a women age with beauty. Pass the bikinis. Victoria is the ultimate Greek mama who is 78 and spends half her year in Melbourne and the other half in her native home of Lesbos. The grandmother is gorgeous and larger than life. Think Sophia Loren dressed in a Camilla kaftan dripping in gorgeous gold jewellery and overflowing with vitality. “My secret to being happy is that I have a beautiful family. That is all that counts. My family. I have three gorgeous daughters and my son is a divine man and of course I have a good husband and my grandchildren give me a lot of good energy,” Victoria beams. The wisdom continues. “I always pray every day and that keeps me young and I tell myself not to worry as God is with me. What will be will be. I smile even when I feel sad. I tell all young women, do not let little problems become big problems.”
As for a recipe for a happy marriage, the wise woman says remember to say sorry to each other often and if you know your husband has done something wrong, do not say anything in front of anyone else but wait until you are home in private and then talk about it in a very calm way. Duly noted Victoria (married 53 years and counting). So perhaps next time we are at a barbecue, I should not snap at my long suffering hubby that he is not eating enough salad in his diet and I am sick to death of cleaning the loo. It’s called grace and decorum and what a wonderful reminder to live this way. Lastly, I asked Victoria why Greek women are so body confident no matter what their shape, and comfortable in their own skin, while Aussies seem to shudder at getting in our togs in front of anyone. I travelled with eight Aussie women and seven of them groaned about getting into their cossies. And we are raised on the beach. Why are we largely ashamed? “We tell our girls they are so beautiful from the day they are born and our bodies are just our bodies. Do not worry if you are not perfect. You are alive and healthy. Eat the gelato. A man likes a woman who looks happy, not who looks hungry. This is all that counts.” Bravo Victoria!

Is it good marketing or just good weather that has brought more tourists to the Sunshine Coast, asks Bill Darby?
T
ourism has been in the spotlight again this week with the release of national visitor data for the year ending June 2017. It’s easy to know when these figures are released, because the tourism bodies that receive council funding for attracting visitors rush straight to the media. They can’t wait to tell us all what a great job they’re doing. Compared to other regions, the council budget allocated to Sunshine Coast tourism marketing is really only a drop in the bucket. That said, this is all the more reason why the scarce resources we have available to us are wisely spent. We need marketing strategies that get us the best bang for our buck. There has been lots to crow about in regional tourism growth over the past two years. The Coast has ridden a wave of success, with rises in both domestic and international visitors. Plenty of people have put their hand up to take the credit. We are told that the investment into the airport and an increase in scheduled flights has grown the tourism economy. We are also told sponsoring major events to attract elite athletes to the region is cementing our reputation as a world-class destination. Our tourism body Visit Sunshine Coast now employees more people and has its fingers in more pies than ever before. Expensive forays into non-traditional markets has defined recent policy around tourism and events promotion in our region – and the ratepayers are footing the bill. All
the while, Brisbane’s loyal drive market has largely been taken for granted. More recently, there has been cause for concern. While the spin doctors talk about increases in domestic arrivals both from interstate and Brisbane, they’re masking the real picture. The Bruce Highway might be more congested with day-trippers and those visiting friends and relatives, but the real tourists are not getting the message. As more Queenslanders are holidaying on the Gold Coast and the Southern Great Barrier Reef, the percentage of visitors staying in Coast holiday accommodation has declined. Nowhere is this trend more pronounced than from Caloundra to Maroochydore. What if the recent purported growth in the region’s tourism sector isn’t a result of all the new events and the big salaries being paid out to the tourism bureaucracy? What if we’ve simply been riding a rising tide thanks to great weather, easy credit and favourable foreign exchange rates? In my view, this is the frank discussion that needs to be had. It has been six years since the formation of Visit Sunshine Coast. The growth in both tourism and events expenditure from council revenue has been exponential. With holiday numbers from Brisbane in decline, the local tourism industry is exposed. Over 90 percent of tourism revenue is delivered through the drive market. While the statistics can be made to look rosy, no one seems interested in this inconvenient truth.

CAPE PALLISER GETS THE SEAL OF APPROVAL The views make the climb worthwhile. By Karen Sweeney, AAP.
T
he red and white lighthouse stands out against the dark rocks and grey skies at the southernmost point of New Zealand’s North Island. Two hours from Wellington along narrow coastal roads and over tall mountain ranges, the lighthouse appears like a beacon, a short way up the hillside. It looks like an easy walk, but from the car park at the bottom you see the real story.

One steep staircase goes straight up the hillside one step straight after the next; not zigzagging like you might expect health and safety laws might require. About halfway up the 251 stairs, the step height grows subtly, only noticeable by the fact the burning in your glutes gets a little bit worse. Fortunately there’s plenty of excuses to stop and take pictures of the 18-metre structure that looms ahead, and
the waves crashing on the rock that you hear behind you. There’s not much to see at the top, but the small fenced area around the lighthouse offers stunning views of Palliser Bay and the Rimutaka Ranges. It’s windy, a little bit wet and the clouds are dark and threatening, but the views are captivating. A short distance off the coast a fishing boat traces back and forward, probably from nearby Ngawi. Cape Palliser is the North Island’s largest seal colony and during the summer months it attracts hundreds of visitors to see the seals and their babies. On this particular day, six laze around on the rocks, rolling and scratching, yawning and sleeping and, of course, posing for pictures. We spot another two perilously close to the road looking like large, grey boulders
– less than a metre from the gravel track. The drive to Cape Palliser from Wellington takes you via the Rimutaka Ranges, which separate the capital and the east coast. The steep and winding road drops steeply off the side in places before the landscape suddenly turns flat. The coastal road is two lanes most of the way, becoming one in sections where the road has literally crumbled into the ocean and over a series of single-lane bridges that are common across New Zealand. You reach the coast at Lake Ferry where you should stop if you’re in need of coffee (there are no cute beachside coffee shops en route). There is, however, the Captain’s Table Food Truck at Ngawi. It sells snacks and ice-cream, but unfortunately the sad little chalk sign warns customers “sorry no coffee”.
IF YOU GO: GETTING THERE Air New Zealand flies from most Australian capital cities to Wellington. Cape Palliser is a two-hour drive and an easy day trip from there. STAYING THERE There are no accommodation options in Cape Palliser, so you’ll need to rest your head in Wellington.

n the world of the 24-hour news cycle, it is easy to get bogged down in the news of the day and worry about the swings and roundabouts of the property and stock markets, or the negative headlines and geopolitical issues facing the world. But a successful investor needs to block out this short-term noise and focus on the long term. Long-term wealth is achievable, and all that is required is a bit of planning and a lot of discipline. Most people know that any investment needs to grow, but there are two sides to the wealth creation coin – growth and income. The value of an asset’s income stream
is often overlooked, but it is often the more valuable component. Take the Australian Stock Market as an example. The ASX 200 index over the past five years has achieved an average return of approximately 5.77 per cent per annum.* But this increase reflects only the share price. When you add in dividends – or income – and then reinvest those dividends, the return climbs to 10.57 per

EMPLOYMENT UP Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson has welcomed new statistics which show employment opportunities in the region are on the increase and unemployment figures are amongst the lowest in the state. The figures show that employment in the region is up 11,500 over the year – with 6400 jobs in construction alone. “The Sunshine Coast Regional Economic Development Strategy focuses on achieving four goals for our region over the next 20 years: to grow the economy to $33 billion – triple what it is now; to provide 100,000 new jobs in high-value industries; to produce 20 per cent of goods and services produced for export; and to increase household incomes so they exceed the Queensland average. “We will achieve that by delivering jobs,’’ Mayor Jamieson says.

Boosting employment is at the cornerstone of my mayoralty, with council dedicated to growing and diversifying our jobs market. We received some very welcome statistics recently, which clearly showed we are getting more Sunshine Coast locals into jobs. Employment opportunities in the region are on the increase, with 11,500 jobs added over the past 12 months, and our unemployment figure is amongst the lowest in the state at 4.8 per cent. On Monday, I was delighted to officially open Langs Building Supplies’ new $20-million facility at Bells Creek. Langs’ investment is estimated to have contributed $54 million to the regional economy during construction alone and once fully operational, it is estimated they will contribute $193 million to the regional economy annually. It’s also a great opportunity for locals, with Langs planning to double their existing staff numbers in the next 12 to 18 months. This will see their total staff numbers reach up to 250 by the time they are fully up and running in about 18 months time. Thank you to Langs for your great support of our region.

The sights and sounds of the Sunshine Coast’s stunning natural environment have been captured and used in the first interactive digital version of our Environment Levy annual report. Available on council’s website, the unique 24 page e-book showcases the significant achievements delivered through our Environment Levy program in the 2016/17 financial year complete with incredible pictures, informative and entertaining video and full sound-based interactive viewing. The levy provides funding to deliver a range of environmental projects and initiatives which would not otherwise be possible. In the last financial year, we invested a total of $10.04 million in protecting our environment, including $3.7 million towards the acquisition of 75 hectares of environmentally significant land. Another $320,000 was invested to deliver research, planning and monitoring to support koala conservation and better understand the health of our waterways. Around $1.2 million was allocated to on-ground environmental projects including

RUNNING BEARFOOT THROUGH THE MUSIC SCENE
O
rganic is a word that seems to be thrown around a lot by musicians who want to explain their creative process, but it truly is the very essence of how Sunshine Coast hip-hop/dub/roots band Bearfoot came into existence. Vocalist Asher Chapman had lived in Vanuatu and played drums in a band there before moving back to his native Sunshine Coast, jamming on the guitar and writing some songs before ending up at an open mic

night at the Sol Bar in Maroochydore. He was soon joined by Sean Keenan and Rhys Fox on the drums and bass and as a trio, they began to make their mark. “We ended up getting gigs even though we didn’t have the songs for it,” Chapman says. “We invited our mates to jump up and jam with us and the people who kind of liked it stayed in the band.” Now complete as a six-piece, with Damian Khoury, Rohan Nitschke and Sullivan Heywood rounding out the group,
their latest single Crazy For You has been ripping it up on Triple J Unearthed and was a crowd favourite on their latest tour, which will finish up with a set at the Caloundra Music Festival on September 29. The single, which features Coast singer Andrea Kirwin, is a love song with a difference. Chapman describes it as “a knees-up ska-driven track with twists and turns, celebrating our rollercoaster love lives” and says he wrote it six years ago when he first met the woman who has now become his wife. “Our producer Paulie B got Andrea in to do some backing vocals to add a nice bit of texture to the track, but then we asked her to sing the second verse and it sounded awesome, so we left it there,” he says. “Andrea was our first recorded collaboration and she just nailed it. It’s been really cool that everyone seems to be digging it.” The band as it stands has been together for about 18 months and Chapman says their diverse backgrounds in everything from heavy metal, to reggae, roots and hip-hop means their sounds is as unique as they come. He says he is looking forward to ripping up the stage with Bearfoot as part of a stellar Caloundra Music Festival line-up. Bearfoot is at The Caloundra Music Festival is on September 29. AFTERNOON FUN TO CELEBRATE COAST NAMING
As part of Eumundi’s celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of the naming of the Sunshine Coast, the Imperial Hotel and Eumundi Brewery are hosting free brewery talks, glimpses behind the scenes, family activities and a live music program that culminates with Melbourne’s disco/pop dynamos Vaudeville Smash. Manager Paul Thomas says the festivities and live music will be rolling all afternoon and into the evening. “As our gift to the community to say thank you for supporting the new Eumundi Brewery, we’re giving away up to 300 free tickets to see Vaudeville Smash,” Thomas adds. pring signifies new beginnings and many couples choose this season as the perfect time to say “I do” and start on the new journey of married life together. In fact, almost 40 per cent of the 120,000 couples that will get married in the next 12 months will do so in spring.

“With the stunning weather, beautiful flowers available and tantalising, fresh produce on hand it comes as no surprise that spring weddings are such a wonderful time of the year,” she says. “At Twin Waters Golf Club, spring means blooming gardens, longer days, immaculate
grounds for your images and wonderful evenings spent on the terrace celebrating with loved ones.” These are the three months of the year where you can enjoy the Goldilocks climate, where it’s not too hot and not too cold, and this gives you a lot of flexibility in the type of outfits you choose for yourselves as well as the bridal party. Spring is also a happy period where there are no major public holidays to worry about, so you won’t have to compromise on the date you have your heart set on. One of the only downsides to a spring wedding is its popularity. It means that if you crave a springtime wedding, you will need to plan a bit further in advance to secure the suppliers and venues you love, as they will be quickly snapped up due to the large volume of couples booking weddings at this time. You might also have to allocate a little more to your wedding budget, as peak wedding season also means suppliers and venues might charge a little more or require larger deposits. INDUSTRY WRAP the Queensland Market Monitor report. REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella says Queensland’s southeast corner once again stood out as the ideal housing market, delivering steady, sustainable growth. “There is no denying the consistency of greater Brisbane’s yearly median house price growth – we have grown steadily for about four years – which is proof that affordability combined with jobs and lifestyle are the recipe for a pretty close to perfect house market,” she says.
SUNSHINE COAST REMAINS TOP PROPERTY MARKET Despite quarterly contractions, the Sunshine Coast remains one of the top performers in the Queensland market, according to the REIQ’s Queensland Market Monitor report for the June quarter. In the Sunshine Coast statistical division, which incorporates the Sunshine Coast Council area as well as Noosa, the market slipped a small 0.3 per cent over the June quarter, from $561,500 in March to $560,000 in June. The unit market also contracted in the June quarter, falling 4.9 per cent, from $410,000 in March to $390,000 in June. Noosa continued leading the residential property market and based on the annual median sale price, Noosa has become the second-most expensive house and land
market after Brisbane and the most expensive unit market in Queensland. The annual median house and unit prices were $645,000 and $479,000 in the 12 months to June 2017. The rental market is the strongest in Queensland, with high demand of rental properties and very low vacancy rates. Similarly, the outlook of the sales market is positive and supported by economic fundamentals such as population growth. The report shows prospects for the Sunshine Coast’s residential property market are positive and supported by a broad plank of infrastructure and development projects. Although the volume of sales over the March quarter fell in the Sunshine Coast
and Noosa areas, the region was also one of only four local government areas that also reported a fall in the number of property listings from the 12 months to May this year. The most popular sale price for houses throughout the region sat between $500,000 and $750,000. Market trends show characteristics of a market favouring vendors, with falling supply and increasing demand and also seeing a shortening of days on market from 54 days in May last year to 46 days in May this year and the second-smallest vendor discount, at just 3.7 per cent. The Coast’s unit market sales fell over the June quarter, but the median sale price increased three per cent to $479,000, making it the most expensive unit market in

They’re well-known as the friendly faces behind the various Luke’s Supa IGAs across the Sunshine Coast, and now revered business people Mel and Gill Luke are returning to Coolum Beach to make their property debut. CAN’T FIND A VEDDER MAN Richard O’Leary can’t forget the time he got some Pearl Jam lyrics wrong on a date.
I
’m mad for a good mondegreen. A what? You know when you are singing the lyrics of a song with all your heart only to find out later that you don’t have all the words quite right – that’s a mondegreen. I’ll give you an example. Your mum has a few wines and starts shushing everyone because an Elton John song starts playing, and she belts out, “Hold me closer, Tony Danza” instead of “Hold me closer, tiny dancer”. Or when your mate is jumping around the living room and giving Pearl Jam’s Jeremy everything he’s got and nailing it until he mistakenly says, “Jeremy’s smokin’ crack today” instead of “Jeremy spoke in class today”. Pearl Jam provided my most embarrassing mondegreen – it was about 20 years ago and I was

mondegreen of the 1987 song Come from the Heart, written by Susanna Clark and Richard Leigh. “You’ve got to sing like you don’t need the money. Love like you’ll never get hurt. You’ve got to dance like nobody’s watchin’. It’s gotta come from the heart if you want it to work.” I think Purkey’s version is punchier, which brings me to my newfound belief that another line should be added following the decision by one of France’s most celebrated chefs last week to walk away from his coveted three Michelin stars. The Michelin Red Guide is the oldest European restaurant reference guide, and it’s rating of a restaurant can make or break a business – three stars is the highest possible score. Sebastien Bras says he’s sick of worrying about every dish potentially being assessed by anonymous food judges. He just wants to go back to preparing beautiful food because it makes him happy.
