ISSUE 469 October 6, 2017
FROM THE EDITOR
T
here would be few people, if any, who could say that their lives haven’t been touched by cancer. This insidious disease is the leading cause of death in Australia – no surprise there. This year alone 134,174 Australians will be diagnosed with cancer. It is a disease that does not discriminate. For those of us who have witnessed the physical and emotional effects cancer has, there is no greater hope than finding a prevention or cure. October is breast cancer awareness month – a time to focus on research and fundraising for this particular strain of the disease. Breast cancer is responsible for 13 per cent of all new cancers that will be diagnosed in 2017. One in eight women will be delivered the heartbreaking news that they have developed the cancer. Sunshine Coast mum Donna Penny is one of the thousands of women who is fighting the battle of her life. It has been nine years since she was first diagnosed, and four years since she was told she had two years to live. As Leigh Robshaw discovers in this week’s cover story, Donna is a true inspiration. A symbol of strength, of mother’s love and determination, and of all the people who are battling the emotional drain and everlasting effects of cancer. You can read her story on page 10. QUICK CHAT
KEEPING IT REAL Where on the Sunshine Coast do you live? I’m lucky to live at Marcoola with a community who all know they’re lucky too. First job? I was a waitress at The Greek Club in West End when I was at uni. What are you currently working on? An exciting range of projects on coastal management, agriculture, biodiversity, water quality and cultural heritage. For instance, traditional cultural fire management at Aura, erosion control on pineapple farms and diversion of organic waste from landfill for composting on a farm. Your family includes My husband Stui, daughters Polly and Louisa, stepsons Jason and Kane, granddaughters Illuna, Ivy, Aysha, Kaiala and Erin, lots of extended family and my 94-year-old parents still together in their own home. First car? A white Valiant called The Prince, of course.
BIO
Can you nominate a day in your life that turned out to be a turning point? When I was about 15 and out riding a horse, I had a moment of intense clarity where I realised God was within and the quest was to strive for perfect honesty, not perfection. Life was never the same after that.
What achievement are you most proud of? I would have to say giving birth to healthy daughters tops any other achievements.
Favourite song? I love traditional cultural songs, like Kothbiro by Ayub Ogada, a Kenyan song of the rain coming. Then of course there’s Katie Noonan’s Tip of Memory.
Susie Chapman has worked in community-based natural resource management for more than 20 years. A biochemist and nutritionist, Chapman is helping preserve the Sunshine Coast’s unique and productive landscape. She is currently working with Healthy Land and Water, is an honorary senior fellow at the University of the Sunshine Coast and was inducted into Sunshine Coast Sustainability Hall of Fame in 2012.
Best day in your life? Marrying Stui was a brilliant day.
Your greatest regret? Can’t say I have any as I wouldn’t be here now if I hadn’t made the choices I have, sometimes wise and sometimes not.
What are you reading now? I’ve just put down A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara, a most extraordinary tale about the impact of sexual abuse.
crusader
If you could change one thing on the Coast, what would it be? I’d like the local government to steer a path back to integrity and ensure our agreed town plan is upheld and meetings and dealings are more transparent.
“Never take yourself too seriously, and never eat anything bigger than your head”
Favourite book? One of the magical realism novels from South America, either Gabriel García Márquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude or Isabel Allende’s The House of Spirits.
Susie Chapman
What is your favourite place on the Sunshine Coast? Our beloved Marcoola beach, where we commune each day on matters of death and birth and everything in between.
Best advice you’ve been given? Never take yourself too seriously, and never eat anything bigger than your head.
You are happiest when? Sharing exquisite moments in nature and sharing the success of a job well done. If you could tell your 18 year-old self anything what would it be? Listen well. You may not agree with every story but they are valid, for they are their stories. Tea or coffee? Strong coffee and peppermint tea. NRL or AFL? Not a big football follower, but I do enjoy a Broncos and Cowboys game as it’s no so aggressive.
It’s all coming together in Harmony

$140 MILLION
Since 1994, the National Breast Cancer Foundation has awarded more than $140 million to fund 479 Australianbased breast cancer research projects. In 1994 the survival rate for women diagnosed with breast cancer was 24 per cent. Today, it’s 90 per cent.
DO YOU REMEMBER? QUOTE OF THE WEEK “Breast cancer doesn’t care how old you are, where you live, whether you’re a career woman or a mother. Breast cancer is a disease that currently affects one in eight Australian women of all ages and backgrounds.” Jane McGrath

DID YOU KNOW?
1960s trend The iconic yellow smiley face was created in 1963 by Harvey Ross Ball. Ball, who was working at an advertising agency, was paid only $45 for his creation, which took the world by storm. Unbelievably, the face was not trademarked at the time.
He may be one of NRL’s greatest players and currently celebrating the Melbourne Storm’s premiership win, but Queenslander Billy Slater was born in the humble town of Nambour.

YAROOMBA BEACH will be a place where the coast’s natural assets are nurtured and enhanced to create Australia’s most significant ecotourism resort. Acclaimed ecotourism expert Tony Charters has said The Westin Coolum Resort & Spa and surrounding coastal village is the right plan to deliver the Sunshine Coast’s first Advanced Ecotourism and Climate Action Leader certified destination. Visitors and locals will be able to interact with and learn about the Coast’s environment and heritage along the Coastal Discovery Trail and within the Coastal Discovery Centre where
technology, art and play combine. Along the trail they will wind their way along pathways through the protected wallum vegetation to the beach to look for animal tracks and witness the whale migration in Winter and Spring. Or they will take a tour to learn about Indigenous food and significant landmarks – after being inspired by native food and sculpture gardens. All of this will be provided within a sustainable coastal village. Evan Aldridge, Yaroomba Beach, Project Director

THE GOOD FIGHT While doctors, researchers, biologists and fundraisers work towards the goal of zero deaths from breast cancer by 2030, terminally ill Warana mum Donna Penny treasures each day she is given to make memories with her loved ones. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

hen Donna Penny was given the news her breast cancer was terminal, she didn’t ask, why me? She asked, why not me? In 2013, the Warana mum to two children and three stepchildren was given the devastating news that her breast cancer, first diagnosed in 2008, had returned. Her doctor gave her two years to live. Four years later she is defying the odds, fighting to stay alive for her children, particularly her youngest son Kai, who is 11 and has only ever known his mother with cancer. “Kai is the reason I keep going,” Penny says. “I have a son, Aiden, who is 22 and he buries his head in the sand about it. Because he’s older, he’s more aware of my morbidity. Kai’s so cute – he’ll see something on cancer on TV and say, ‘will that make you better mummy?’. I’ll say, ‘I don’t know darling, we’ll have to wait and see’.” Kai was the inspiration for Penny’s book Why My Mummy?, which gained national media attention when she published it last year. The Project’s Carrie Bickmore was so touched by Penny’s story, she flew to the Sunshine Coast to interview her. “I’m no one special,” she says. “All these other women get it. I’m just the one in eight women who got diagnosed with early stage breast cancer and then one of the 30 per cent of early stage breast cancer [patients] that went on to have terminal, or stage four,

breast cancer.” Penny first found a lump in her breast when she was 30, but it didn’t show up in a mammogram or an ultrasound and she was told it was nothing to worry about. But the lump didn’t go away and in 2008, when she was 35 and Kai was just 20 months old, three small tumours showed up in an ultrasound – though a mammogram didn’t pick them up. There was no lymph node
micro-fractures. It’s also in her left adrenal gland and she has two lesions in her liver. “My chemo options are running out,” Donna says, in her matter-of-fact way. “I’ve been on full-time chemo pretty much for two years.” According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation and Cancer Australia, the rate of breast cancer diagnoses in Australia is increasing. Today, one in eight women and

involvement, but she had a double mastectomy to be on the safe side, underwent chemotherapy and took Tamoxifen, a drug used to treat and prevent cancer, for five years. She was given a 98 per cent cure rate, but in 2013, the cancer returned. A CT/PET scan revealed lesions in her spine, left humeral head, pelvis, hips, ribs and skull. Today, Penny’s breast cancer has spread to multiple bones. She has a fractured rib from the cancer eating into it and many
one in 715 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer by their 85th birthday. This year, an estimated 17,586 women and 144 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and of those, 3114 women and 28 men won’t make it. Although more people are being diagnosed with breast cancer, the good news is more are surviving. In the 1980s, the breast cancer five-year survival was around 72 per cent and today it has improved to 90 per cent, thanks largely to earlier detection
and better treatments. Sunshine Coast breast cancer surgeon Dr Lisa Creighton has operated on more than 1500 women during her 14 years practising on the Sunshine Coast. She cites improvements in imaging, such as digital and 3D mammography, and the development of new drugs like Herceptin as some of the factors contributing to better outcomes for breast cancer patients. Genetic testing for the BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutation has attracted much media attention after celebrities like Angelina Jolie publicised her own diagnosis and subsequent double mastectomy. However, Creighton reports that the gene mutation accounts for only five to 10 per cent of all breast cancers. “Not all women who opt for a bilateral mastectomy have an abnormal gene,” she says. “Some women may opt for a preventative or prophylactic mastectomy if they do have the gene, and there are a similar proportion of patients who elect to have a preventative mastectomy who don’t have the gene, but still have a strong family history. That underscores the next frontier: understanding more about cancer genes and finding the next piece of the puzzle that predicts for breast cancer.” As an oncoplastic breast surgeon, Creighton enjoys the relationships she has with her patients and finds her lifesaving myweeklypreview.com.au

COVER STORY
SCREENING AND DENSE BREASTS Most medical experts agree that successful treatment of breast cancer is linked to early detection. BreastScreen Australia invites women aged between 50 and 74 for a free mammogram every two years. Women aged 40 to 49 and over 75 can also be screened free of charge but don’t receive invitation letters. Ultrasound can detect breast changes that can be felt but not seen on a mammogram or changes in women with dense breast tissue. Research has found dense breasts can increase cancer risk by six times and make clear mammogram detection difficult. The Specialist Women’s Imaging Centre at Currimundi has Australia’s first Senographe Pristina 3D Mammography System, a $5-million machine that uses a dye to enhance the contrast in the image and aid accurate diagnosis, particularly for dense breasts. For women at high risk for breast cancer, an MRI may be recommended. Women are also advised to do a monthly breast self-exam.
dying – I’m scared of leaving my kids, especially Kai, because he’s still at an age where I don’t want him to forget me. I just need to get him a bit older. “I’ve done two legacy videos. I just wanted to tell the kids, especially Kai, to work hard at school, travel, meet a girl, treat her well, save money, do the trips and always be kind. And I just wanted him to know how proud I was of him and if he settles down and has children, I’ll be watching over him. And I said I loved him more than anything and I’m sorry I won’t be around.”

BEATING BRCA2 When Sunshine Coast real estate agents Loren Wimhurst and Karen Jones tested positive for the BRCA2 gene mutation, the pieces of a lifelong puzzle fell into place. Their family seemed particularly prone to cancer – their mother died of pancreatic cancer in her fifties. Their older sister Tania – who sadly died in a car accident along with her unborn baby – had a rare tumour on her kidney when she was young. Younger sister Justine fought aggressive breast cancer in 2013 and Loren and Karen have also fought the disease. Loren was also diagnosed with an aggressive melanoma. “When we tested positive for the BRCA2 gene mutation it was really scary, but it made a whole lot of sense,” Loren says. In 1994, Loren was 27 years old and 20 weeks pregnant with her daughter when she found a lump in her breast. She went to the doctor three times over a period of two months but was told her not to worry, as she was ‘too young’ to get breast cancer. “Mum had pancreatic cancer at the time and was in her early fifties,” she says. “It was Mum who kept saying, go back. I went to the Wesley in Brisbane and they diagnosed quite aggressive cancer. I was in surgery that night because it had gone so long.” Surgeons removed all the lymph nodes and a third of Loren’s left breast, and started her on three months of chemotherapy. Her daughter Estelle was born at 28 weeks, and was hospitalised for three months. (Today, Estelle is a healthy 23-year-old.) “I’ve also got a son Sam, who is 27. I breastfed him, did all the right things, never smoked, was fit as a fiddle, was never a big partygoer. I was just the most unlikely person to get cancer.” In 2002, Loren’s cancer came back in both breasts and she had a double mastectomy. Karen decided to have her ovaries removed as a preventative measure in 2009 and began investigating a double mastectomy, but put it off due to her busy life as a working single mum of two children. “I’d been having 12-monthly screenings, alternating MRIs and mammograms and they did pick up a suspicious lump earlier this year

work rewarding, although it has its sad moments. “I can tell you the name of every patient who hasn’t won their battle,” she says. “They come in all shapes, sizes, ages and backgrounds. They haven’t necessarily done anything wrong, haven’t smoked or drank, they’ve just drawn the short straw.” Like Creighton, oncologist Dr John Reardon, who established the Sunshine Coast Haematology and Oncology Clinic in 1998, believes gene technology is the new frontier in the fight against the disease. “I’ve no doubt in the future, part of a tumour will be sent off to the pathologist and part to the molecular biologist and they’ll tell us the array of abnormal genes that are driving the process. It’s certainly the way oncology is going. The days of blunderbuss chemotherapy are limited and of all of the new agents in clinical trials around the world, probably 95 per cent are targeted and not just general chemotherapy.” As an army of medical practitioners, scientists, researchers and fundraisers work towards the goal of zero deaths from breast cancer by 2030, Donna Penny is living each day as it comes, supported by family and friends, including husband Jason, who she renewed her marriage vows with in June thanks to My Wedding Wish. “I think the main thing for people with a terminal illness is to always have something to look forward to,” Donna Penny says. “We’re off to Japan in February so Kai and Jason can go snowboarding. Then a beautiful friend is taking me on a holiday to Aruba in April. I love flamingos, so we’re going to Flamingo Island. Fingers crossed my health holds up.” She’s also off to the Mornington Peninsula on a retreat for women with terminal breast cancer later this month. “We’re a group of 25 dying women and we plan to drink the champagne, eat the cake and have massages. “I can’t talk for all women with stage four breast cancer, but I’ve been lucky to live a full life. I’ve had a great life; I met the love of my life, Jason. He proposed two weeks before I started chemo. I’m not scared of
Karen Jones and Loren Wimhurst that turned out to be breast cancer,” Karen says. “It was detected with a mammogram and ultrasound but for a couple of months, my hand kept going to that spot. It wasn’t a lump but I just had an intuitive feeling that something wasn’t right.” Karen’s surgeon, Lisa Creighton, advised her to have a double mastectomy, which she had in March this year. Fortunately, the cancer hadn’t spread to the lymph nodes. “I’m 52, Loren is 50 and Justine is 48 and none of us have breasts or ovaries, we’re all like androids now,” says Karen. “However, we’re all still here.” “Be diligent, be healthy and don’t put your head in the sand,” warns Loren. “If I’d stuck my head in the sand when I was 27, I wouldn’t have made it to 30. It’s quite scary to face the facts, but facing the facts means you have a good chance.” Both say they are grateful for the care they received during their darkest moments and are big supporters of Sunshine Coast charity Bloomhill Cancer Care, among others. Loren runs the Next Property Group Bloomhill Charity Auction and has raised more than $100,000 in two years. This year’s auction will be held at Gary Crick Automotive in Maroochydore on October 27.

PACK A PICNIC AND SUPPORT LIFEFLIGHT Sunshine Coast parents are encouraged to bring their kids and favourite teddy bear to enjoy a fun-filled picnic at Coolum State School on Saturday, October 7 to help raise funds for the emergency helicopter service LifeFlight. Organised by Sekisui’s Yaroomba Beach and LifeFlight, the Bears Picnic will host an array of themed activities from meeting Chief the LifeFlight bear as well as face painting, a jumping castle, an animal petting zoo, a teddy bear hospital, colouring in competitions, sausage sizzle, raffles and entertainment. LifeFlight Foundation CEO Leanne Angel says the inaugural event encourages people to come together and raise funds for the RACQ LifeFlight helicopter.
In any one year, around one million Australian adults have depression and more than two million suffer from anxiety, according to Beyond Blue. This is why it’s so important that events such as Mental Health Week are acknowledged. This year the event is being held from October 8 to 14 and Sunshine Coast Council is inviting residents to join Fusion Sunshine Coast’s 4.8-kilometre Walk/Run for Wellness from Maroochydore Rotary Park in Cotton Tree on Sunday, October 8. The walk from 8am aims to raise awareness of the issues surrounding mental health and to promote wellbeing.

It is being held at Hinton Fitness in Sydal Street, Caloundra. There will also be a physiotherapist and exercise physiologist on hand to discuss the general health benefits of active ageing. To RSVP email kevin.moss04@gmail.com.
Year 1 Mooloolaba State School student Archie Griffiths was diagnosed with leukaemia earlier this year and the entire school community is rallying behind him and his family. The school is hosting a comedy fundraiser – A Laugh for Archie – on Friday, October 13 to raise money for Archie’s cause. The event is being held in the school hall and doors open at 6.30pm. SUNNYKIDS FOUNDER LEADS THE STATE SunnyKids founder and CEO Chris Turner (pictured) has been awarded Queensland Not for Profit Leader of the Year at the recent Australian Institute of Managers and Leaders awards. Known for his focus and commitment to providing support to children across the Coast to help them reach their full potential, Turner became the first man in Australia to run a domestic violence refuge in 2003. In 2009, Chris formally founded the SunnyKids children’s charity, taking the organisation’s work throughout the region and delivering online resources to schools across Australia with 500,000 students participating in SunnyKids programs in 2015 alone. Just last year, SunnyKids delivered over 13,000 hours of support to vulnerable children and families on the Sunshine Coast.
KEEPING OUR BEACHES SAFE
RE OF T N
The Sunshine Coast beaches are set to be a little safer over the next five years with the council and Surf Life Saving Queensland announcing the continuation of their partnership to provide lifeguard services for the region. The contract extension, which starts this month, will allow SLSQ and the Australian Lifeguard Service Queensland to work directly with the council to watch over and protect the hundreds of thousands of beachgoers who visit the Sunshine Coast in growing numbers each year. Mayor Mark Jamieson said among the most significant achievements since the contract started five years ago had been the delivery of an additional 3700 lifeguard hours, which was vital for keeping our beach-users safe.
100,000 OLD TALES FOR ALL Did you know the Sunshine Coast was originally called the Near North Coast? Or, that four men and a cat travelled from Ecuador to the Sunshine Coast on a man-made raft? These stories are now on show with the official launch of the Newsmakers Exhibition at the Landsborough Museum taking place last week. As part of the 50th Anniversary of the Naming of the Sunshine Coast celebrations, the exhibition showcases stories that have happened during the past 50 years that have helped shape the region. The exhibition will run until September 2018. Entry is $10 for adults, $9 for a concession and $3 for children.
One hundred thousand additional car parking concessions will be available annually in Queensland Health’s major hospitals, including the Sunshine Coast University Hospital and Nambour. Health Minister Cameron Dick said the extra concessions aimed to significantly increase the availability of affordable hospital parking. As part of a Public Hospital Car Parking Action Plan, hospitals with paid parking were required to develop and publish their car parking concessions policy. “As a result, patients and carers experiencing hardship, who require assistance, are visiting frequently, or who are in our hospitals for extended periods of time, will have increased access to free or discounted car parking.”
SAND SNAKE CAUSES A STIR Mooloolaba Beach was a hive of activity on Monday as a giant snake took centre stage as part of the Shaping Sands festival. The snake was the work of international sand artist Dennis ‘The Sandman’ Massoud and Year 3 Mooloolaba State Primary School student Jack Steif, who designed the illustration as part of a competition run by the school and Rotary. Jack’s mum, Dennis Massoud with a creation Kate Steif, said she was over the moon to hear her son had won the drawing competition. “He has a wonderful imagination and he came up with the design and artwork all on his own. I am very proud of his achievement.”

YOUNG WILDLIFE CRUSADER INSPIRED BY STEVE IRWIN Caloundra student Ollie Scully is passionate about wildlife and he wants to educate others about the importance of our local environment.
O
llie Scully has natural curiosity in abundance and he is using his passion for wildlife to pave a pathway to awareness for the rest of the community. The 17-year-old Caloundra resident has been most at home in the bush for as long as he can remember. He spent most of the last school holidays in pockets of bushland around the region searching for wildlife to photograph and post about on his Facebook page Sunny Coast Wildlife. “One of the first memories I have is being truly into watching the wildlife that would come to Grandad’s bird feeder on his old property in Buderim,” he tells My Weekly Preview. “He had everything from rainbow lorikeets and rosellas to possums come there, and I then decided to start learning all I could about them. “As I began to learn and understand more about birds, frogs, reptiles and now all animals, I knew I wanted to help other people make changes to the way they live to conserve these animals for as long as possible.” Scully says the rate of development on the Sunshine Coast is astounding and he has grave concerns for the future of native wildlife if more is not done to preserve them.
Ollie Scully shares his bushland experiences via his Facebook page “I have often been in forests doing some research and come back one day to find the whole thing is a dirt patch,” he says. “Then a couple of weeks later, houses go up. I’d love to see more people rehabilitating land and much later in my life, I plan to start buying back land for wildlife, especially in my area around Caloundra.” Some of Scully’s latest Facebook posts
include a trip into the fire-ravaged area near Aura, where he reported his awe for how quickly the area’s vegetation has regenerated. “At first glance, it’s had a big impact in the Caloundra conservation reserve, but I followed a track down there and saw the small saplings have already regenerated, and there are goanna tracks everywhere, so they are out in force, hunting for morsels,” he says.
“While some animals were killed in the fires, those who survived have been thriving with the good nutrients in the new growth and easy vision for those who hunt. After all, this is how forests always were when the indigenous Australians used fire to regenerate forests and aid them to hunt for food.” The enthusiasm is palpable as Scully recalls some of his most memorable wildlife experiences that he describes as “solitary ordeals”, which is why he takes to his blog and social media to share them. He’s also keen to start a YouTube channel. “I draw a lot of inspiration from [Steve Irwin]; he was always an idol of mine growing up. I want to show viewers what they can see if they go beyond the city and why these amazing animals need to be conserved. “I often think about how massive a task it is, and how complex our ecosystems are, but the bigger it is, the more I feel strongly that I need to protect it.” While he still has one last term before graduating from Unity College, Scully has already lined up work experience with a tour company in the Kakadu National Park and is preparing to launch himself into his passion, with the aim of creating a lasting legacy and boosting the wildlife conservation message.

MY OPINION
SHOPPING SHAME
HOW TO MAKE LOVE LAST
Sami Muirhead likes the idea of supporting small local stores that carry quality goods, but can’t resist the pull of a big store bargain.
Suzanne Loubris says there is no formula for a perfect relationship, but good communication, understanding and forgiveness are essential.
I
’m an addict who needs to stop my dirty cycle of abuse. I am trying to avoid my weakness: Kmart. I binge shop at the chain shop and then feel guilty for spending money on a whole lot of stuff I probably do not need. OK, stuff I definitely do not need. I want to support local more. Bespoke and ethically-made products appeal to me. I want to live by the mantra of quality not quantity. But, it can be hard to resist Kmart given the huge presence the giant has on social media. Users are taking to Instagram and Facebook to share their styled rooms and design hacks using the store’s vast product range. There is a buzz to be heard and bragging rights to be had with how you can bring a cool factor to your house and life for a song. And us girls love talking up how we transformed our pads for a bargain as much as we love watching Sophie Monk crack her witty one-liners on The Bachelorette. Kmart life hacks even make the mainstream news sites these days they are so popular. Who doesn’t want to add a cactus to their ensuite in a macrame hanging basket or cover their kids bedroom in the latest fruit-shaped wall decals? What about those little zip-up bags for keeping wet togs in that Kmart has just released? You cannot buy them for money or love as they sell out before they are
unpacked on the shelf. True story. I have been in three times to try to change my life and be organised when it comes to kids’ wet clothing after swimming. I am not alone in my Kmart bingeing. Wesfarmers own Kmart. The global corporation has just released its half-yearly profit figures for Australia. Profit in six months has increased by 13.2 per cent to $1.82 billion. Kmart was the star performer and boosted its earnings by 16.3 per cent to $371 million on revenue growth of 8.9 per cent. That is a lot of $2 candles and cactus plants. It makes it hard for the little
“I want to live by the mantra of quality not quantity” independent guys to compete. And all the more important to support them. When I’ve spent my dollars with the hardworking, local little guys – usually on a dress or a homewares item that I have truly loved – it has stood the test of time. So let’s start afresh as we head into term four of school and the summer of 2017 before Christmas hits us. My name is Sami. I am a little bit addicted to shopping. But I will resist the allure of the $2 cactus.

W
hat makes a perfect relationship? Whatever the two people in it decide. There is no perfect formula for a relationship in my view. So what is your perfect relationship? Have you discussed it? Have you agreed? By the way, having one person dictate and the other silently concede is not an agreement and will not create a perfect relationship. In my experience, the person who concedes sometimes gets retribution later on in life. Maybe we should sign a relationship contract that we renegotiate every few years: I promise not to fart; burp; eat with my mouth open; tell you stories about what happened at work in minute detail then yell at you when you tell me what to do about it; walk dirt into the house; forget to replace the toilet paper; play Candy Crush in bed. I promise to: be nice at least 80 per cent of the time; make love to you on an agreed basis; brush my teeth; keep my nails pretty; not develop a beer gut; and only watch sport 30 per cent of the time I am home. There’s a great saying I heard a long time ago. A man marries a woman hoping that she will never change and a woman marries a man believing that he will change. Both are disappointed. I am sure it translates to the LGBTIQ community equally as well. People often have an idealised view of how their relationships will progress, regardless of all the evidence to the contrary. We are omnipotent when we are in love, a bit
like P-platers who have no idea how dangerous driving actually is. We enter into the relationship thinking our love will continue to blind us to the other person’s revoltingness. When the cracks start to develop, we think how annoying it is that the other person is the way they are. In fact, the very things we loved about them when we met them are incredibly annoying now. We don’t consider that maybe WE need to change. How do we learn to negotiate and communicate, listen with empathy instead of firing off at the first word the other person utters that we don’t like? How do we listen to understand, instead of being adamant about how right we are? What if we perceived our partners as being well-intentioned? What if we were forgiving? What if we communicated graciously? ‘Hey, you probably don’t realise this, but when you walk inside with muddy boots; drop your towel on the floor; leave your nail clippings; hair or makeup all over the place, I want to stab you with a sharp implement.’ Oops, that wasn’t what I meant to write. ‘Hey, you probably don’t realise this, but when I tell you about my day and you tell me what I should have done differently, I feel hurt and frustrated instead of relieved and at peace because I believe I have been heard and understood.’ Whoa. Imagine sounding like that. You’ll be off to sort out conflicts between countries next. Why don’t you give it a try?

WORDS OF WISDOM FROM AWARD WINNER There is no better place than the Sunshine Coast to get the entrepreneurial juices flowing. Just ask Jetts CEO Elaine Jobson. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane
T
he Sunshine Coast has one of the highest numbers of entrepreneurs per capita in the country, with small businesses flourishing in an environment that is rapidly growing and evolving. But the size of your business is not what matters the most when it comes to determining its success, as Elaine Jobson knows all too well. The CEO of Jetts Australia and International, who was also named the 2017 Outstanding Business Woman of the Year at the Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network awards, is set to share her wealth of knowledge as the keynote speaker at the Caloundra Chamber of Commerce’s next Better Business Breakfast. The Mount Coolum resident will share five valuable lessons small business owners can learn from big business, with practical tools to enact immediate change for the better. Jobson’s career has taken her around the world, from working for Richard Branson in South Africa, to setting up a chain of gyms in Indonesia and Malaysia. “Having the opportunity to work for Richard running a business he acquired in South Africa were some of the best years of my career, where I learnt firsthand how to build a great culture and build a truly customer-centric business,’’ Jobson says. “He is a risk taker but not foolish. He spends countless hours pawing through the detail of his companies to not expose them to unnecessary risk. He has fantastic personal values and lives them every day. He is congruent and consistent, which are rare traits in many leaders of today.”
Jobson has learnt from the best and says she makes a habit of doing things that scare her. Having spent time on both sides of the business fence, owning a small business as well as running multinational companies, Jobson understands the challenges of competing
“Thoroughly understand the problem before you decide on a solution” against the big brands in terms of sales, marketing and talent acquisition. “The best advice I’ve ever been given was to spend time thoroughly understanding the problem before you decide on a solution,” she says. “This advice has helped me make the right decisions and not rush into solving the wrong problems, a common error in business.” Attendees of the breakfast will also benefit from a glimpse into how Jobson managed to propel Jetts into the top 25 best places to work.
The Caloundra Chamber of Commerce Better Business Breakfast is on at The Events Centre, Caloundra on October 26 from 6.45am to 8.45am. Tickets are available at caloundrachamber.com.au.

In this fast moving world, it’s smart to let a professional handle things
Struggling with weight? Never enough energy? Can’t pinpoint the cause? You may have developed sluggish liver or chemical sensitivity. Have you been battling with weight issues and tried every diet and exercise to date? Is constant fatigue getting you down? Are hormones wreaking havoc on your quality of life? Anxiety or depression getting worse not better? Problems with skin, respiratory, joint or digestive issues? Numerous factors can play a role, as to whether an individual develops what is known as multiple chemical sensitivity, a hyper-response to even the lowest levels of both toxic and non-toxic chemical substances. This sensitivity can be inherited, however it may also depend on an individual’s exposure and their environment.
Up to 50% of the population have a genetic abnormality in how they detoxify and are at greater risk.
It’s always wise to remember that the greater the potential return, the higher the risk. We understand you may want to fast track your financial situation but we also understand the importance of moderation, so you can trust our highly qualified financial advisers to keep a firm hand on the wheel, so you remain in control and arrive at your desired outcomes. Talk to us today about how we can tailor an effective strategy to improve your financial position and reach your investment goals.
Symptoms can range from rashes, skin irritation, itchy ears, dark circles under the eyes, muscle cramps, headaches, memory impairment, poor concentration, depression, anxiety, coughing, wheezing, joint pain, constipation, diarrhoea, food intolerances, addiction to food, thyroid imbalances or premenstrual symptoms. Your work, home, and the environment where you live, close to a city, or farming and is where exposure is highest. Other risk factors can be a poor diet or nutritional deficiencies, obesity, kidney or liver disorders. Medications we take, personal hygiene items we use on our body, cosmetics, cleaning products and the kinds of plastics we use on a daily basis, can all place a heavier burden on our livers to detoxify us, fast tracking us down the path to chemical sensitivity. We know the liver plays a major role in our toxicity levels, so comprehensive detoxification profiling is available, but other contributing elements also need to be identified, such as food intolerances. Your nutritional status is assessed, along with testing for any genetic abnormalities, bacterial or viral infections, along with guidance on how to minimise exposure for the future. Misdiagnosis is common due to the varied and multiple symptoms that are often seen with this type of condition, so ensure you seek advice from one of our trained integrative practitioners who can assess your risk of chemical sensitivity. GROWTH AHEAD FOR BETTER MENTAL HEALTH
DON’T FORGET Is your memory starting to go? A few relatively simple lifestyle changes can help, writes Jodi Chapman.
A sensory garden for older people suffering mental illness is on the wish list for the Sunshine Coast Health Foundation. Not-for-profit organisation Wishlist is planning to install a sensory garden in the Older Persons Mental Health Unit at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital to the tune of $5000, but community donations are needed to get the green project off the ground. “The majority of our consumers are over the age of 65, and have come to

hospital to receive specialised mental health care,” says acting nurse unit manager Sarah Challenger. A recent summary of research into promoting good health through contact with nature found that even small levels of exposure to nature accounted for improved health outcomes across a number of health conditions, including mental health.
If you can help, please considering donating at wishlist.org.au or phone 5202 1777.
The founder of Metabolic Precision, Dr Paul Cribb, will be speaking at Fernwood Fitness Maroochydore on October 10 from 6.30pm about body transformation. The event will kickstart the gym’s Summer Sculpt six-week body transformation program. To RSVP to the free seminar or to find out more about the program phone 5479 0744.

ou’d be forgiven for thinking that poor memory is an ageing problem, but what if it’s not? Forgetting a name or word is common, though when you find you’re forgetting recent conversations and not recognising faces easily, it’s time to look at what’s happening. When your fading memory begins to affect your productivity at work, it’s often
“Start by increasing sleep, reduce stress and resolve conflicts” coupled with signs of distractibility, poor focus, feeling disorganised and sometimes a low mood. This puts your work at risk, and the stress then makes the problem worse, as stress is the main contributor to memory loss, not necessarily ageing.

Starving the brain of sleep; missing key nutrients from the diet such as calcium, magnesium, B complex and proteins; hormonal imbalances; and brain inflammation are all causes of memory loss that will occur at any age when you’re not living a balanced healthy life. Short term, we accept it as part of life, though it shouldn’t be. Long-term depression, Alzheimer’s or dementia are risks we take if we ignore it. Start by increasing sleep, reduce stress with exercise or downtime, resolve conflicts and spend time with people you love, choose better food, treat your body like you love it, as you should, and ask for help with your health if it’s beyond your ability. Choosing health and happiness is up to you, so choose to live the life you deserve.

Claudia Schiffer’s skin secrets
MAKE YOUR EYES POP WITH METALLIC MAUVE
we love!
Age-defying model Claudia Schiffer looks amazing at 47. She has said she’ll never use injectables and that Botox is poison – she’s more scared of its long-term effects than getting wrinkles. She looks after her skin with Clinique products and surprisingly, uses a men’s face scrub, saying exfoliation is the key to her flawless skin. She shies away from too much makeup and likes to wear a little concealer and bronzer. r

6 MOST POPULAR NAIL SHAPES The shape of your nails will alter how your hands look. Celebs favour almond nails as they elongate fingers, while square nails are a practical option, and squoval is a happy medium between square and oval. Attempt ballerina (also known as coffin) nails only if your nails are long and sturdy as they’ll be prone to breaking. Oval nails are the most versatile and suit most hands.

APP OF THE WEEK
IT’S GOOD TO TALK There’s been a bit of chat lately about walkie-talkie app Zello, which turns your mobile phone into a two-way radio. The Zello app has a bit of a history – it started life back in 2007 in Russia and was known as Loudtalks, an app for Windows. However, Zello recently hit the headlines when more than a million people downloaded it in just one day before Hurricane Irma hit the Caribbean. Earlier this month it topped Apple’s app store chart in the US. Unlike other messaging apps, users don’t need to dial a phone number or type a text to communicate with friends. With Zello you just hold down the ‘echo button’ to speak. The app is available for free download now on the App Store for iOS devices.

HANDS-ON CLOCK A WINNER Remember the Weasley family clock, which showed the location of Ron, George and Fred when they weren’t at home? If you liked that, you’ll love the Eta Clock. Like the clock in the Harry Potter book and movies, the Eta doesn’t tell time, but tells you where the people in your life spend their time. Each hand represents a person and points to their destination, such as work, home, school, at the gym or outside. As the person moves, so does their corresponding clock hand. The clock face is made from oak plywood and laser-engraved with 12 locations, while the hands are anodised aluminium and dyed with your choice of colours. Mobile devices connected to the clock broadcast their geolocation co-ordinates to a secure server, which then relays that information to the clock. Magic!
JUDGEMENT DAY
The Eta Clock will retail for $US375 ($465) and is available on kickstarter.com with an estimated delivery date of July 2018.
ROBOTS COULD REPLACE TEACHERS Inspirational teachers of the future will be intelligent machines rather than humans, according to a British university vice-chancellor. Within 10 years a technological revolution will sweep aside old notions of education and change the world forever, says Sir Anthony Seldon. The vicechancellor of the University of Buckingham believes school teachers will lose their traditional role and effectively become little more than classroom assistants. They will remain on hand to set up equipment, help children when necessary and maintain discipline, he says, but the essential job of instilling knowledge into young minds will wholly be done by artificially intelligent (AI) computers. “It certainly will change human life as we know it,” says Seldon. “It will open up the possibility of an Eton or Wellington education for all. Everyone can have the very best teacher and it’s completely personalised; the software you’re working with will be with you throughout your education journey. – AAP

Triple J reporter Sarah McVeigh is the host of a How Do You Sleep At Night?, a new podcast where she chats to people who live with judgement every day. McVeigh will introduce listeners to a big tobacco lobbyist, a killer, hunters and a stock market manipulator. Every day these people are judged for what they do and McVeigh explores the different moral codes we all live by. The podcast will force you to question your own moral compass and perhaps look at the world from other people’s points of view. We all assume we aren’t bad people while judging others, and How Do You Sleep At Night? will have you questioning that assumption. The How Do You Sleep At Night? podcast is available on the App Store and Google Play.

inding a box of old letters is like striking gold for a historical writer like Dorothy Whittington. Her 2007 book March Hero told the story of Jim Hocking, a 21-year-old Nambour man whose act of bravery saved the small English town of March in 1944. When his family discovered Jim’s last letters, she knew she had to update the book. Mayor Mark Jamieson is launching the second edition of March Hero at Nambour RSL on October 6. “The Hocking family had Jim’s wartime airgraph letters turn up in an old biscuit tin,” she says. “Another two chapters were added. “It now becomes a really poignant countdown because you know his life ends on July 28, 1944, but his letters talk of hoping to be home for his 22nd birthday. As with the first book, it is a very emotional journey. He’s only 21 and he’s in England flying bombers. His letters put Jim into his story.” Whittington, a veteran Sunshine Coast journalist who began her career as a cadet with the Nambour Chronicle in 1975 at the age of 19, is a passionate historical writer who knew she’d found a fascinating story when she first heard about Hocking. “I was covering a Maroochy Shire Council meeting in the late ‘80s when they were looking at forming a sister city relationship. It was mentioned that March in England had been saved by a boy from Nambour during the war. My ears pricked up. I thought, ‘that’s a good story’ and filed it away in my head. He had told his crew to jump to safety while he guided his burning bomber over the sleeping town and died when it crashed in a paddock within view of
its 14th century church. “I was living in England in 2005 and thought it was finally my chance to follow up the story. I made the trip to March and also visited Jim’s grave in the Cambridge Cemetery. It was a chill November day. There were autumn leaves blowing across Jim’s grave and I thought, what the hell is a boy from the Sunshine Coast doing buried in this cold, grey place? I determined at that moment I would write his story. While it was well-known in England, many people in Nambour, where he was from, had never heard about it.”

PROFILE Whittington says it was a harrowing story to tell. “It was a labour of love; it’s a story I feel quite passionate about.” Whittington’s tenacity over many years has seen her enjoy a long and successful career in journalism. She worked on major Fleet Street dailies, freelanced in Europe and returned to Australia to work for the Brisbane Sun as well as stints with TV and radio in the days before the Coast had its own news bureaus. She has worked for almost all of the newspapers on the Sunshine Coast at some point, written the biography of former Maroochy Shire Chairman Eddie De Vere in 1996 and edited the autobiography of former chairman Fred Murray, as well as providing the research for two TV documentaries about the Coast. My Weekly Preview readers will recognise Whittington’s local history stories, many of which she writes from personal experience, having grown up in Nambour and raised her three children in Palmwoods. Many locals will also recognise her as the editor of Your Time magazine. Less known is her role as a funeral celebrant with Gregson and Weight

There have been a lot of exciting times.” While she’s a dedicated career woman, she says she has always put her children – Rebecca, 32, Beau, 27 and Alix, 25 – first. “I had a home office long before there was internet and often when the kids went to bed, I would write to 2am,” she says. “I really felt strongly about being there as they grew

Interviewing then PM Bob Hawke at the Noosa Pro-Am golf series in the ‘80s up. If I’m ever asked about my greatest achievement in life, I’d say those three kids. They’re amazing. “When Mike Ahern had just become Premier, I was doing a story for the Sunday Sun. It was a Saturday afternoon and I was vacuuming. Becky answered the phone. I put the vacuum down so I could take a call from the Premier of Queensland and I thought, this is a working mother.” Whittington held off on her travel while raising her family but now she’s over 60, she has a policy to head offshore at least twice a year. While she’s still recovering from “living and breathing the book” for months, her focus is shifting back to her website, Brismania, completing her lifetime transformation from print journo who called in stories at public phone boxes, to digital editor. “I’ve gone from working beside the printing presses and the smell of ink, to social media, where the press is all but wiped out. “What I’d really like to do next is give tours of Brisbane, to combine history with playing tourist at home,” she says. “There’s some amazing WWII stories. That’s the next project that bubbles away in the back of my head, saying take me, take me.”

MY TIME
TODD’S TALES Todd Widdicombe is thinking about a career change from radio to souvlaki.
R
ecently my buddy Sami went to Greece on a “creative immersion retreat” and stayed on the Isle of Lemnos, the home of haloumi cheese, which is right next to the isle of Lesbos, the home of every bloke’s infantile fantasy. I even joked with Sami, because I’m a 42-year-old juvenile, “Hey I guess what happens on Lesbos stays on Lesbos, am I right or am I right?”. She immediately retorted with “Nice try git, but I’m straight”. Yeah Sami, so is spaghetti until it’s half-cooked.
It reminded me of the time my dad John visited the Canary Islands decades ago and didn’t see one single canary. Then later that year, he visited the Virgin Islands. Same thing. With that in mind, I’m afraid to visit Lesbos. Sami brought a Greek mythology kids book back for her young tribe and it’s littered with fairly graphic stories of Zeuss destroying other gods and then coming to Earth and removing the fire and light, leaving behind him a lifeless, desolate wasteland and inadvertently creating Adelaide. The book shows Zeuss’ enemies having their livers hacked out by vultures and their eyeballs and brains removed, with a good dose of disembowelling and beheading. Just a bit of light bedtime reading for the wee-uns. Having said that, if you’re into it and you love that kind of terrifying, nightmare inducing Greek tale, just watch Wog Boy 2 on DVD. Sami’s creative immersion retreat did inspire me with my own creative thoughts and I’ve decided I’m chucking in the radio gig to start my own Greek themed restaurant. When I say restaurant, it’s more just me in a caravan selling kebabs. But I’ve come up with the ultimate name for my new venture: “I Should Be Souvlaki, laki laki laki”. Yeah I know, better keep the radio job.
TURNING UP THE VOLUME ON COAST MUSIC SCENE
Fast becoming the state’s premier regional music industry conference, the fourth annual Turn Up Sunshine Coast Music Industry Conference is poised to once again provide a boost for local musicians and music venues. The conference program includes keynote presentations, discussion panels with leading music industry achievers and showcase performances from local Sunshine Coast artists including Nicole McKinney, Mason Hope and Doolie. Turn Up program director Eloise Gallagher says the conference provides a platform of opportunity, inspiration and education for the Sunshine Coast music industry. “It supports and invigorates the vibrancy of our local music scene by bringing music people together to network, share best practices, listen to outstanding local talent and learn from some of our industry’s best, right here in Nambour, the creative heart of the Sunshine Coast,” she says. Industry veteran Glenn Wheatley will share advice from his 50-year career in his keynote speech. The conference is on at The Lind Theatre in Nambour on October 19. Tickets are $50 plus booking fee from oztix.com.au or turnupevents.com.

This is a gripping, haunting, and well-paced suspenseful psychological thriller that will have you turning pages to the very end.

MENTAL, BUT STILL ROCKING
ELECTRONIC DUO DOUBLES UP DURING TOUR When UK-born vocalist and multiinstrumentalist Rachel Clutterbuck and Melbourne beatmaker Mattriks join forces, magic happens. The live electronic duo, known as Rachel By The Stream, is performing two gigs on the Coast. The duo’s debut album, Situation Positive is an eclectic 10 tracks spanning reggae, high-octane pop and dance, and was written and recorded over three years in the pair’s Brunswick music studio. Originally planned as two EPs, the band decided instead to release the material along with their more dance-oriented tracks, as an album. “We realised we didn’t want to release genre-distinctive EPs,” Clutterbuck says. “We play all of these songs live in the same set and somehow it works, so we wanted the album to reflect that diversity. Rachel by The Stream will play Peregian Originals on October 8 and the Solbar in Maroochydore on October 13.

WOODFORD POSTER UNVEILED
GOTTA SEE LEE Lee Kernaghan is one of the all-time greats of Australian country music. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the launch of his amazing career and the release of his first chart-busting hit, Boys from the Bush. The anniversary tour is guaranteed to be one of the most sought-after tickets of the year, with the concert covering a quarter of a century of smash hits as well as songs from his new 25th Anniversary Album. Lee Kernaghan will be at The Events Centre in Caloundra on October 27 from 8pm. Tickets are $69.90, concession $64.90 and children (two to 14) $59.90. They are available at theeventscentre.com.au.
The highly anticipated release of Woodford’s festival poster each year marks an important milestone in the life of Australia’s largest gathering of performers; it’s a visual statement of the intentions, ideas and hopes for the festival ahead. Designed exclusively by Woodfordia Inc.’s Artist in Residence Gavin Ryan, the poster is a powerful illustration of the relationship we have with nature, represented by the life surrounding a coral ecosystem and encompasses this year’s over-arching concept of interconnectedness. This year, the Woodford Folk Festival will host a series of presentations and forums on the state of the Great Barrier Reef and for the first time in the history of the festival, the festival speakers program will be released before the full program is revealed on October 14. Woodford Folk Festival is on December 27 to January 1. Early-bird tickets are on sale now at woodfordfolkfestival.com.
Sunshine Coast residents have a chance to pay just $10 for a brand-new MINI Ray, or a 14-carat rose gold morganite and diamond ring. The major raffle prizes, donated by Coastline MINI Garage and Sunstate Jewellers, will be drawn on October 8. You still have time to head to Coastline MINI Garage to buy your tickets. All proceeds from tickets sales will go to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Don’t miss your chance to win this fantastic prize.

BUSINESS & FINANCE
Mark Davidson, Ord Minnett Buderim.
SUPERANNUATION BENEFICIARY NOMINATION
F
or many investors, superannuation typically represents a large share of their wealth, so it is important to ensure family and intended beneficiaries are suitably addressed in the event of death. A super death benefit can be paid only to an ‘SIS dependant’, which includes a spouse, a child of any age, financial dependant, interdependent person and the legal personal representative of the deceased. The option of having the superannuation left as a pension is restricted to a spouse, a child under age 18, a child between the age of 18 and 25 years when the child is financially dependent, a disabled child, a financial dependant other
than a child, or an interdependent person. There are various options in relation to nominating a beneficiary. Firstly, a pension can be reversionary, which enables you to nominate who you would like to continue receiving your pension after death. A second option is a binding death benefit nomination (BDBN), which enables you to specify the SIS dependant(s) who you wish to receive your super, and also the percentage splits between these nominations. Finally, a nomination can be non-binding, which gives guidance to the
“It is important to ensure family and beneficiaries are suitably addressed” trustees when allocating to beneficiaries, but they can choose to direct the super elsewhere. This raises the possibility that super could be distributed against your wishes, and thus it may not be a good option. A BDBN can be either lapsing or non-lapsing. If lapsing, it must be reviewed and renewed every three years. A non-lapsing nomination sounds the best option at first glance, however, if
circumstances change regarding the desired beneficiaries, it must remembered to update the nomination. In many ways, a reversionary beneficiary is the simplest and smoothest choice to make. The pension automatically reverts to the beneficiary with no interruption to payments. It also ensures the funds remain in the concessionally taxed superannuation environment. One planning consideration is that with a reversionary nomination, the surviving spouse has 12 months from the date of death before the pension balance is included in their transfer balance cap (TBC). This gives some time, if needed, to restructure other pensions before inclusion in the TBC. Conversely, a BDBN can give the beneficiary the flexibility to decide whether to take the super as a lump sum or, where eligible, as a pension. This is a complex area and there are many planning opportunities arising from the various death benefit nominations, so it’s important to consult a suitably qualified professional when finalising your plans. SHINING DUO Buderim’s To Hold & To Have jeweller Shiree Hobson and business partner Jo SaxelbyBalisky have just returned from Sydney after winning the Jewellery Association of Australia Australasian Jewellery Design Awards. It is the second time the duo has secured the award. Most recently, their design was entered in the Precious Metals category, while they previously won the Bride to Be award. “It is a rare accomplishment to be nominated by your peers as a finalist once in your career, so to win twice in a row is an accolade we are still finding difficult to believe. Especially since, as a jewellery design house, we are only three-and-a-half years old,’’ Shiree says. The pair will now represent Australia in the International Jewellery Design Awards held in Hong Kong.

HIA AWARDS
PERFECTING HOUSE DESIGN The annual Housing Industry Association awards are on again with the region’s best builders vying for a win. So, what does it take to make a winning house? My Weekly Preview finds out.
T
he 2017 Housing Industry Association’s prestigious awards are upon us again and this year’s entries will not disappoint. HIA Sunshine Coast branch manager Stuart Collins says the quality of homes continues to surpass expectations as each year passes, confirming the region’s reputation in the construction and architectural industries. “The residential construction industry is a tough industry to operate in with heavy regulation and constant change,’’ Collins tells My Weekly Preview. “Each year the awards allow us to put to one side all the challenges and celebrate industry’s achievements. Our members build outstanding homes, which lead the way in design, innovation and workmanship, and it is an absolute privilege to showcase these projects.”
FIVE MINUTES WITH STUART COLLINS, HIA SUNSHINE COAST BRANCH MANAGER Grant McDonald Homes won the hotly contested People’s Choice Award in 2016.
What are you waiting for? If you have a project that you are proud to have built then get the recognition you deserve. If you are not successful then learn from the experience. It is a great night out and you can gain inspiration from other entrants. While there have been many first-time entrants that have won awards, there are also those that have been unsuccessful initially but continually improved their product and have gone on to win multiple awards.
Mosaic Construction’s Maleny home called Two Roads won the 2016 Home of the Year title
SNAPSHOT These are the HIA Sunshine Coast Housing Awards categories: • Home of the Year • People’s Choice Award • Custom Built Home • Display Home • Renovation/Addition • Best Use of Face Brick • Outdoor Project • Residential Building Designer
• Spec Home • Townhouse/Villa Development • Project Home • Innovation in Housing • Small Lot Housing • Apprentice of the Year • Excellence Award • Kitchen of the Year
Q) What advice do you give to people thinking about entering the awards in the future?
• Kitchen Design • Bathroom of the Year • Bathroom Design • Commercial Interior Design Project • Interior Design Display Home • Property Styling • Residential Interior Decorate • Residential Interior Design
The HIA-iLandscape Sunshine Coast/ Wide Bay Housing Awards will be hosted on October 6. To read about the winners, be sure to grab your copy of My Weekly Preview on October 27.
Q) What changes have you noticed over the years in regards to entries? Unsurprisingly the dollar values across all kitchen and bathroom and building award categories have increased significantly. The industry has also seen the emergence of new specialised areas with their own award categories such as small-lot housing, innovative housing, outdoor kitchens, interior design, outdoor projects and affordable housing.

HIA AWARDS
KERRY PENGELLY, HIA AWARDS JUDGE
there’s been a big investment by builders showcasing beautiful small-lot houses. The display homes are well worth an enjoyable leisurely look. Make time to have a look – you’ll be delighted.
Kerry Pengelly has immersed herself in creativity. Her background is in architectural illustration, house design, property development, landscape design and installation. She is also a watercolour artist. Pengelly has been a HIA Awards judge for the past nine years and says she enjoys seeing the house design industry evolve with the times.
Q) Tell us about the quality of builders on the Sunshine Coast? Are they on par with larger cities?
Q) What are the benefits of the HIA award for entrants? Recognition and exposure of their talent, problem solving, skill and flair.
Q) What advice do you give to people thinking about entering the awards in the future? Awards matter and it is reassuring to those wishing to build to know a builder has met a high standard in all areas.
Q) What changes have you noticed over the years in regards to entries? The big improvement in outdoor spaces and an acknowledgment that, in this climate, homes are often open
Showcase Property Styling has entered work into the awards to the garden or patio, and outdoor areas are lovely places to spend time.
Q) As a judge what are you looking for when considering the difference between a good entry and a winning entry?
Every year I see a few homes that really are a piece of 3D art, that you can live in – where the volume and space, material use and line take your breath away, where the inside and outside is blurred, where’s been a big investment in design time and how the space will impact on the inhabitants. Where there is not only an excellent, highly skilled finish, but it is liveable, has design flair and comes from a place from within the builder’s heart and soul.
That’s a complex question as the criteria and points allotted alter for each category. When you have two good entries it comes down to quality of finish and detailing.
Q) How is the standard of entries this year? The benchmark just seems to shift up a notch each year. It’s difficult to not be in awe of what is achieved.
Q) How has the building and design industry changed in the past decade on the Sunshine Coast? Continually improved design, a paring down and coming to terms with the essentials of living as building lot sizes have reduced in size. Houses that open up to the outside or where the line between the inside and the outside is blurred.
Q) What can people learn from these homes and apply to their own projects?

FROM THE HEART
Many of the homes viewed are fantastic value for money and are affordable to those looking to build. Small-lot housing continues to evolve, including multiple use of spaces. This is where much of the building construction is happening, and

HIA AWARDS
DEAN COSTA, HIA JUDGE It’s been 25 years since Dean Costa first entered the construction industry and he hasn’t looked back, going on to build a hugely successful business. This is his first year judging the prestigious awards.
Q) What is your favourite part about judging the competition? My favourite part was the team that I was judging with and seeing the great efforts from all the builders on the Coast that entered the awards.
you execute your build correctly with minimal defects and great workmanship.
Q) What changes have you noticed over the years in regard to entries? Over the years I have noticed that the standard of housing is pushing the boundaries of construction and design.
Q) As a judge what are you looking for when considering the difference between a good entry and a winning entry? The quality of workmanship and design considerations.
Q) What are the benefits of the HIA award for entrants?
Q) How has the building and design industry changed in the past decade on the Sunshine Coast?
The benefits for the awards is that it strengthens the builder’s name and identity as a builder and it is also a great achievement.
The building and design industry over the past decade has evolved into some really great contemporary and architectural designs pushing boundaries.
Q) What advice do you give to people thinking about entering the awards in the future?
Q) What can people learn from these homes and apply to their own projects?
Select the category that you are going to enter and make sure
Over the years as I have evolved as a custom builder you see all these great award-winning homes in magazines and you become inspired from these great homes. Things that can be taken from these homes can be how they are orientated and use of materials.
This Noosaville entry is from Total Creative Constructions
Q) Tell us about the quality of builders on the Sunshine Coast? Are they on par with larger cities? I believe that the quality of the builders on the Sunshine Coast are of a high standard and this shows with the amount of awards that the Coast has produced and won at a state and national level.
Dean’s tip for building a dream home:
This Planet Homes property is entered in the 2017 awards
If I was to build my dream home I would make sure that the orientation was correct to get the right amount of light and breezes.

I
f you could bring three things with you to a deserted sand cove, what would they be? If your answer is limited to a private chef, a personal waiter and the magical dust of fairy lights, then fear not on the four-hectare paradise that is Lagen Island. You’re not asking for much on this island off the archipelagic province of Palawan in the Philippines. We’re about half a day’s travel from survival of a different kind, including Manila’s fatal drugs war and the strife-torn Mindanao. But if you can make do with the wonder of one of the earth’s most diverse snorkelling dives; if you can live off the serenity of what was once the world’s best coastal destination; and if you just add their signature calamansi citrus fruit to every dish until the end, then you may just cling on here. This is the conclusion I eventually succumb to after cheating death on what the resort guide described as a “luxury 30-minute hike”. He failed to mention the 100-metre incline. However, upon returning to where the dirt hit the sand and the sand met the still waters of the secluded cove of

Bacuit Bay, I realise I don’t really need much here at all. After an hour-long flight from the sorrel smog of Manila and the brisk jeepney transfer to the jetty, comes the 45-minute trawl through what the locals call their own Bermuda Triangle. Perhaps this is because it’s flanked closely by all three El Nido resort properties, or perhaps because today our bamboo vessel is navigating a dark and ominous rainstorm. The boat crew are assuredly unmoved, and once we emerge out of the mire with our boat intact, we glide past a dozen islets puffing their chest with glorious limestone cliffs. It was as if we were transported to Peter Pan’s Neverland – only without the pirates. Finally comes the mirage that is Lagen Island, a hidden Filipino gem tucked into a Gatorade-blue lagoon and guarded by the white-crested water cottages. Greeted by the musically inclined welcome band and a delightful calamansi juice upon arrival, the formalities are soon drowned out by the view. “The first thing they always say is that it’s amazing,” boasts resort manager Jen Zafra.

“Then they ask if that limestone giant rock at the front of the lagoon is real. As far as National Geographic is concerned, it’s about 200 to 250 million years old. It’s our icon.” After the Ayala family spent almost $US9 million (about $11 million) refurbishing, “amazing” doesn’t quite cut it. The aesthetics are only half the experience – a maximum 110 guests are catered to by almost 150 employees, including a “special team” that arranges your getaway to one of five private coves. With bohemian-style tents and floating pontoons with private waiters and chefs, it makes you wonder what else you need to “survive” on this 7000-plus archipelago in Southeast Asia. If you actually manage to grow tired of the relaxation on your white balcony, you can jump back on a boat and venture out to the unimaginatively named Big and Small Lagoons. You will see dozens of travellers who are taken out to kayak and swim in the middle of the towering limestone walls. The snorkelling though is where it’s at, with more than 800 species of fish, including metre-long jackfish, clownfish, and endangered sea turtles. * The writer travelled as a guest of Philippines Tourism.

hen it comes to turning your hobby into a holiday, I’m going to put my aunt Rosslyn out there as my role model. After a double knee reconstruction (due to too much snow skiing) she was told the best way to recover was to either swim or cycle. She fell in love with both and promptly joined up with a local swim club who are now such close comrades they travel around the world together – from the Bosphorus to the
bays of the Cinque Terre – combining their love of swimming and travelling. This woman astounds me and is such a leading light to the joy of following your passions. So, whether it’s a love of gardening or a penchant for pedal power, you just never know where that hobby of yours will take you.

CALLING ALL CREATIVE TRAVELLERS
Award-winning ceramic artist Shannon Garson is embarking on a new adventure and inviting others along for the ride. The Maleny artist is hosting a tour to Tasmania in March and has room for artists, foodies and travel buffs to experience the southern state in a special way. Garson’s delicate, nature-inspired work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally and she has picked up dozens of awards and accolades. She has taught overseas and now this new venture has captured her imagination. “I’m really excited to be hosting my first tour. We’ll explore, forage and experience some of the most stunning places in Tassie,” she says. “Every day will bring new surprises – slow breakfasts, bespoke tableware, wild seas and intimate gatherings sharing food with artists, designers, farmers and chefs.”
Partnering with group travel experts Trade Travel, Garson has handpicked creative art and food experiences that will captivate and inspire those travelling with her. Tour guests on her Creative Voyage – Tasmania will be treated to feasts along the way including dinner with the executive chef at MONA (Museum of Modern Art,) a Huon Valley Hungarian feast and lunch with gourmet farmer Matthew Evans. And it wouldn’t be a Tassie tour without a chance to munch on apples right there in the orchard! “We’ll peer into hidden corners of studios and learn first-hand from renowned artists while feasting, talking and laughing,” Garson says. “Stunning scenery, magnificent historic buildings and quaint townships are along the way. This really is a tour for everyone.” Visit tradetravel.com.au/creative -voyage-tasmania/

So Evergreen has negotiated with Europe’s best operators to bring its travellers experiences such as a tour to Drachenburg Castle in Cologne, a guided hike through the vineyards or Rudesheim, or a day trip to the medieval fortified town of Rothenburg – all while on a 15-day river cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest. When you pre-book one of these tour options you will be assured of the best price and value-added extras exclusive to Evergreen Cruises and Tours. Not only are the destinations sure to impress, but spectacular staterooms are something to look forward to after an exhilarating day of sightseeing. Emerald balcony suites on the Horizon and Vista Decks of the river ship include a flat screen TV with infotainment system, individual air-conditioning, a personal safe, fridge, hairdryer, hotel-style beds, an ensuite bathroom, Wi-Fi and bottled water daily. There is even an innovative indoor balcony – at the touch of a button, the top section of the floor-to-ceiling window drops
down, flooding the suite with fresh air and providing seamless views. Emerald balcony suites on the Horizon Deck also feature the desirable upper-deck views as well as additional inclusions such as bathrobes and slippers, and other treats to make your experience even more special. FACTS AND STATS
The latest Household Income and Wealth Survey has produced some surprising results. My Property Preview crunches the numbers.
T
he Australian Bureau of Statistics has published the 2015-16 results of the Household Income and Wealth Survey and the results are not what many people expected. Statisticians looked at household debt and over-indebtedness, considering a household to be over-indebted if the level of debt was either three or more times the household income, or 75 per cent or more of the value of household assets. The results show that 21.6 per cent of households are over-indebted, 51.9 per cent of households tare not over-indebted, and 26.4 per cent of households have no debt. Interestingly, higher-income households were found to be more likely to be over-indebted than lowerincome households.
(10.7 per cent) are the least likely to be living debt free. “Whether you agree with the analysis used to determine whether households are over-indebted or not, it is interesting to look at the trends,” Kusher says. “Households with no mortgage debt, most of which are retiree households, are least likely to be over-indebted. On the other hand, higher-income households with a family that have outstanding mortgage debt are most likely to be over-indebted. “While you could say that families of working age with higher incomes are better able to service their debt, interest rate hikes or reductions in the value of their assets could have a significant impact on their ability to service their debt,” Kusher adds.
The latter were also more likely to be debt-free. CoreLogic analyst Cameron Kusher says a staggering 94.6 per cent of the households found to be either not overindebted or debt free had no members of the household in the workforce.
“Whether you agree with the analysis or not, it is interesting to look at the trends” Lone-person households are the most likely to be living debt free (45.9 per cent), while single family households with a couple and dependent children

NEW HOMES CREATE THE IDEAL WORK-LIFE BALANCE Small business owners searching for the perfect work-life balance are being encouraged to look at Bells Reach, as a series of shop-top homes are launched at the popular community. Three shop-front terraces, created by Vantage Homes, are being built at the central site of the former Bells Reach Sales and Information Centre, which relocated to Stockland’s Aura community earlier this year. The shop-top terrace homes are pre-approved for retail use downstairs and residential use upstairs, and feature two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a spacious ‘shop-front’ area and separate entries

for each of the home and business spaces. Stockland regional manager Ben Simpson says this gives entrepreneurs a chance to live and work in the heart of the new community. “Not only is this popular spot a great choice for business, it’s a lifestyle choice too – zero commuting time means owners will have more time to enjoy the two parks, additional retail options and proposed cafe right on their doorstep,” he says. Earlier this year, Stockland unveiled plans to redevelop the former Sales and Information Centre site at Bells Reach to create a residential and retail development overlooking its award-winning Quinn Park.
New research from research and ratings agency Canstar Blue into the real estate industry has revealed 31 per cent of consumers value an agent’s ‘problem resolution skills’ as the number one contributor to their satisfaction. The second most significant contributor to their satisfaction, according to 28 per cent of customers, is ‘communication and advice’. As a result of this research, First National Coastal’s general manager Shane Dawes is urging the real estate industry to shift its emphasis to problem resolution and communication over the traditional and historic focus on marketing and agency fees. “Agents must shift their emphasis from marketing to communication skills as well as problem resolution or perish,” warns Dawes. First National Real Estate has been presented with Canstar Blue’s Most Satisfied Customers – Real Estate 2017 Award, the second year in a row the organisation has won the prestigious industry acknowledgement. It was also awarded Most Satisfied Customers – Small Business Real Estate 2017 by the consumer ratings agency. “This research confirms that customers value an agent’s ability to anticipate and resolve challenges that arise while selling a client’s home or managing their investment property. This award is testament to the real estate expertise of our 4600-strong network of real estate agents and their commitment to customer satisfaction.” Head of Canstar Blue, Megan Doyle, congratulated First National Real Estate on the success, saying, “Good communications and problem resolution are crucial elements of any good real estate service and it is notable that First National Real Estate was
the only one to rate five stars in these areas. For topping our ratings for the second year in a row – while also taking top spot in our small business real estate review – we congratulate First National Real Estate.” Again this year, Canstar Blue engaged Colmar Brunton to survey 3000 Australian adults across a range of categories measuring customer satisfaction. Customers in the survey group were required to have used the services of a real estate agent in the past three years. In the past two years First National Real Estate has been awarded the following Canstar Blue Awards: • Most Satisfied Customers – Real Estate 2016 • Most Satisfied Customers – Real Estate 2017 • Most Satisfied Customers – Small Business Real Estate 2017. myweeklypreview.com.au

Superannuation Nest Egg / Development Opportunity For those who can afford to landbank or buy into their superannuation this quiet North facing parcel has been identified as Future Urban and has recently had a feasibility study for a subdivision plan containing 29 allotments. The adjoining property has received approval to be subdivided and, as part of that process, town sewerage must be brought through this property in consultation with the owner. Up until recently, this property was known as Nambour Nursery. Laid out over 11 acres with picturesque waterways that provide atmosphere and irrigation. The property will suit tree changes and investors alike. Apart from receiving rental income from the two existing homes (one four bedroom, one two bedroom), the former, easy to run, nursery has the potential to re-commence trade and expand to include a cafe and retail sales outlet.

with MWP’s man in the water
While reading up on philosophy recently, I stumbled across a great joke. And, considering there isn’t much surf around lately, you get the joke instead: A court recently found a man guilty of defamation in a case against one Ms Johnston for calling her a pig. Upon hearing the guilty verdict the man asks the judge if he is allowed to call Ms Johnston a pig. The judge replies with a no. The man then asks if he is allowed to call a pig Ms Johnston for which the judge says: “I see no reason why not.” With that the man leaves the court and says, “Good afternoon, Ms Johnston.” Go Julian. ARIES MAR 21-APR 20
TAURUS APR 21-MAY 21
GEMINI MAY 22-JUN 21
Mid-week looks frustrating, as the Mars/Saturn square stymies motivation and slows progress. So you’ll need to be patient, which is not one of your virtues! The good news? Jupiter jumps into your ‘money-fromothers zone’.
With Jupiter in your partnership zone, until November 2018, aim to be more compassionate towards loved ones. Plus try to view a relationship from a more philosophical perspective. If single, you could fall for someone from another country.
Expect a week of intense communication challenges. You’ve got plenty to say but make sure you listen to others. Jupiter wanders into your wellbeing zone, which is good news for your health and emotional wellbeing over the next 13 months.
CANCER JUN 22-JUL 23
LEO JUL 24-AUG 23
VIRGO AUG 24-SEP 23
A relationship looks problematic, as a loved one issues ultimatums. More compromise is needed – on both sides – if you want to avoid tears before bedtime. Jupiter visits your entertainment zone until November 2018.
The week starts with a challenging sun/Pluto square. So pace yourself and do your best to avoid run-ins with authority figures. If you are the person in charge, then resist the urge to be bossy and over-bearing with others.
On Monday your finicky OCD side could run rampant. If you let it. Instead take ten deep breaths, try to relax, and keep things in perspective. Your public profile really takes off over the next 13 months, as Jupiter blesses all forms of communication.
LIBRA SEP 24-OCT 23
SCORPIO OCT 24-NOV 22
SAGITTARIUS NOV 23-DEC 21
When it comes to a personal issue or a family matter, it’s time to ask some hard questions and take a firm stand. Don’t let a loved one walk all over you, and avoid the tendency to procrastinate! You won’t get far if you just sit on the fence.
It’s time to celebrate! Jupiter, the planet of luck and prosperity, is moving through your sign until Nov 2018. And this only happens every 12 years. So make sure you are proactive as you capitalise on the energy boost and good fortune.
Work will be frustrating this week, or a friend could surprise you by doing something unexpected. It’s definitely time for Sagittarians to become more philosophical, as Jupiter moves through your contemplation zone for 13 months.
CAPRICORN DEC 22-JAN 20
AQUARIUS JAN 21-FEB 19
PISCES FEB 20-MAR 20
This week is about getting the ratio right between public life and your private inner world. Be inspired by Hugh Jackman, who celebrates his birthday on October 12: “The secret to modern life is finding the measure in time management.”
Jupiter charges into your career zone. Which bodes well for a promotion, new job or lucky break coming your way over the next 13 months. But there is no room for false modesty! In order to truly flourish you must be passionately proactive.
Someone may pressure you to reveal information that was given to you in confidence. Hence your current moral conundrum as you ponder ‘Is honesty always the best policy’? With Jupiter transiting through your travel zone, foreign shores beckon.
Solve all the clues and reveal the eight-letter word spelled down the middle of the grid.
What is Stuart Little? What is Shere Khan? Worn on cowboys’ boots The number of Harry Potter books A volcano does this A treat made of sugar, butter and milk What is Marty from Madagascar? A noise made when sleeping

THE LAST WORD
SUNDAY MORNING CONTEMPLATION Richard O’Leary enjoys some father-son bonding over an unsual chat.
“W
ould you rather be boiled alive or hanged?” I open my eyes to get a better look at this human alarm clock. My seven-year-old son holds a copy of Horrible Histories Top 50 Villains. This should be an interesting start to my Sunday morning. Now the uninitiated may resort to turning over in bed, but I know that will only delay the inevitable. “Hanged.” I say. Would you rather be beheaded or skinned alive?” “Beheaded.” Would you rather be starved or thrown off cliffs?” “Thrown off cliffs.” “Strangled or poisoned?” I ask him to repeat the question as I’m not sure. I usually go for what will be quickest but strangulation seems too intimate. “Poisoned.”
“Would you rather be shot or burned?” “Shot.” “Burned or blown to pieces?” “Blown to pieces.” That’s the last of his questions, but he’s not done with me yet. “Ask me what I would rather.” Fast-forward five minutes and I now know my seven-year-old’s macabre order of merit. But my youngest child is not finished. Not content with the book’s list of choices, he begins to create his own. “Spear or bullet?’ “Alcoholism or plane crash?” My brain transports me back to my childhood and a tea towel with Irish jokes on it: “My grandpa drowned after falling into a vat of whiskey. His workmates tried to save him but he bravely fought them off.” But like the air trapped at the bottom of a cold glass of beer, a more recent memory starts to bubble its way to the surface. I come across him on my way to work.
I’ve known him more than a decade, not well, but enough to say hello. He’s sitting on the pavement, pulling himself along with his hands. His skinny legs are bloated at the feet. I’ve seen him a couple of times in the last month as his battle with the bottle enters its final stages. His inability to walk is probably caused by alcoholic myopathy, his muscles unable to support his weight. I ask if I can help him, call an ambulance perhaps? He replies “I only have a few weeks to go, and I’ve had a relatively long life.” He is only in his mid-forties, although his grey, crumpled, shell-shocked face reveals many of those years have been tough. So to answer to my child’s question, I’d take the short-lived terror of the plane. Although for the last word on this topic, I’ll leave you with Elon Musk, the billionaire backer of the first private mission to the Red Planet. “I would like to die on Mars. Just not on impact.” olearylastword@gmail.com
