THE FIRST WORD
ISSUE 474 November 10, 2017
FROM THE EDITOR
Win
It was 25 years ago that Australian band The Waifs joined forces and released their first album. Now, more than two decades later, they are celebrating the milestone with a new album and a regional tour. The band’s eighth album, Ironbark, which was released earlier this year, will see The Waifs head to Caloundra on their regional tour. The group will perform at The Events Centre on November 29. We are giving away one double pass, valued at $118.
T
he first question Steve Miller asked when I phoned to talk with him about this week’s cover story was, “Do you have children?’’ I told him I have a three-year-old son, and that I hope we never have to live through the nightmare his family has endured. The Millers suffer on a daily basis – the result of a senseless and cowardly attack. As Steve points out, unless you have the misfortune to be the family of a one-punch victim, you will never know the depth of the pain and heartache it brings. In January 2016, Australia mourned the loss of Steve’s son Cole, an 18-year-old boy who was struck down. Cole’s death is one in a string of similar attacks that continue to haunt our streets. It is a concerning trend demanding the attention of parents, politicians, police and medical professionals. It is also an issue that grabbed the attention of Danny Green, who has devoted his own money and time to educate the public about alcohol-related violence. Yes, Danny may be one of the world’s most celebrated boxers, but he has a heart of gold and wears his emotions on his sleeve when it comes to saving young lives. As he told me, he walks into the ring with a fellow athlete who wants to be there – a substantial difference to throwing an unprovoked punch at an unprepared, innocent person. Let’s hope the madness stops. Thank you to Steve Miller for opening his heart and sharing his story in the hope that it makes a difference.

QUICK CHAT
TREASURED GIFTS believe it, even on my graduation day.
First job? Working in the accounts department at Butler Brothers in Brisbane. The wage was five pounds per week. My family includes… my husband, Peter. Our daughter, Bronwyn and her husband, Geoff. Our son, Scott and his fiancée, Joanie. First car? VW Beetle. I always wanted really wide tyres. Unfortunately, that never happened, but it did get a paint job.
Your greatest regret? Not understanding about giftedness when our daughter was small. It was only when Bronwyn was training teachers to become gifted education mentors that she discovered she was gifted in innovative thinking and she was 40 by then.
Favourite book? I especially like Hugh Lunn’s book, Over the Top With Jim, because I grew up in Annerley, Brisbane and it reminds me of my childhood – and my Dad’s name was Jim. What are you reading now? I have been fascinated meeting the children in Alan D. Thompson’s book, People Like Me. What are you currently working on? Having just concluded the five-year journey to write The Gifted Kid Book Series, I am currently working on the animation of my stories and preparing presentations for the marketing phase. I am looking forward to interacting with children, parents, grandparents and educators.
author
Gloria Van Donge BIO
Pelican Waters author, Gloria van Donge and her husband Peter did not know they were the parents of a gifted child until she was an adult. The discovery prompted Gloria to create a series of five illustrated children’s books to help educators work creatively with gifted children at a young age. Her goal is to affirm gifted children and help them treasure their potential to excel.

Can you nominate a day in your life that turned out to be a turning point? Easter 2012 was a turning point in my life because that was when our daughter phoned and suggested the idea of writing a book for gifted children. This unleashed wave after wave of creativity.
What achievement are you most proud of? Creating life – the tender moment of holding our newborn children.
“Learn to appreciate life – a rose petal, the crunch of celery, vibrant colours…”
Creating stories – holding my published books in my hands. You are happiest when? When I’m creative, toying with new ideas, shuffling words, doing my best.
What frustrates you the most? Technology. I am quite challenged by it.
Favourite song? Let’s Go Fly a Kite from Mary Poppins because I associate it with the idea of freedom.
How do you deal with your frustrations? If it’s a technical problem, I call my husband. If I’ve hit a brick wall in my writing, I go to the beach.
Best advice you’ve been given? As a new author, the best advice was to accept the fact that draft one is only ever a draft. I learnt to hold words lightly, so editing and restructuring didn’t leave scars – only memories of the thrill of reshaping an idea.
If you could tell your 18-year-old self anything, what would it be? Be thankful and generous. Learn to appreciate life – a rose petal, the crunch of celery, the vibrant colours when white light is diffused, and laughter.
What is your favourite place on the Sunshine Coast? The beach – Moffat, Kings, Bulcock – anywhere where the waves roll in and make lacy patterns on the sand.
Tea or coffee? Flat white in a mug – extra hot.
Best day in your life? One of the best, but scariest days, of my life was the day I walked onto the university campus at St Lucia as a mature-aged student. I discovered I loved to study. My father still couldn’t
NRL or AFL? The guys in the family barrack for the Broncos.

DID YOU KNOW?
Who can remember stomping and clomping around on tin can stilts? This classic childhood pastime was a favourite of Australian kids in the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s.
The largest beach towel was recorded in Spain on June 5 in 2010. It measured 87.14 metres in length and 25.20 metres in width. It took eight days to make.

Fairy bread
Meaning: Frequently served at Australian children’s birthday parties, it’s bread cut into triangles and sprinkled with hundreds and thousands. Origin: First recorded in the 1920s. It’s believed the name could come from the poem Fairy Bread in Robert Louis Stevenson’s A Child’s Garden of Verses, which was published in 1885.
WORD OF THE WEEK Nuncupative Verbal; spoken rather than written.
LIFE HACKS The weather is certainly heating up. If you like your drinks to be refreshing, wrap a wet piece of paper towel around the bottle, pop it in the freezer for 10 to 15 minutes and it will come out icy cold.

$120M INTO THE COAST’S ECONOMY EVERY YEAR THE economic benefits of Yaroomba Beach to the community are significant. Each and every year, our project will add $120 million to the Sunshine Coast regional economy. That benefits the local shops and cafes, the locally grown flowers that go into the hotel, the strawberries or meat from local farms plus all the services to run the 5 star international The Westin Coolum Resort & Spa. It’s also the 90,000 new visitor nights a year to the resort - driven by bringing conferences and events back to the Sunshine Coast. This activity supports job creation and employment across the community – not just the 360 new jobs we will create at Yaroomba Beach, but many new and existing positions with tourism operators, retailers and eateries from the coast to the hinterland. If you want this economic and jobs opportunity for your region, show your support at www.yaroombabeach.com.au

COVER STORY
STOP THE VIOLENCE
Alcohol-fuelled assaults and one-punch attacks are increasing in our nation. My Weekly Preview investigates why and speaks to those who are trying to curb the violence. WORDS: Candice Holznagel.
C
ole Miller was 18 when he was struck down in the most cowardly way. The young man, like most teens embarking on adulthood, had dreams, hopes and aspirations. The former Mooloolaba Surf Club lifesaver was a talented water polo player and was tipped to follow in his older brother’s footsteps and compete at the Olympic Games. Tragically, Mr Miller was not given the chance to become the man his family knew he could be. Instead, he died in the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital on Monday, January 4 last year, 24 hours after receiving a single, fatal punch to the back of the head while walking to a taxi rank with his best friend after a night out in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley precinct. The attack was instigated by Daniel Maxwell, who was out celebrating his 21st birthday. The New Zealand national received an 18-month suspended sentence and was deported back to his home country. His co-offender Armstrong Renata, who delivered the unprompted fatal blow, faced the Supreme Court in Brisbane last month and pleaded guilty to unlawful striking causing death. The court heard that Mr Renata’s Steve Miller coward punch caused the teenage victim to fall and hit his head on the pavement. Mr Miller suffered massive head injuries and brain trauma and his family made the heartbreaking decision to turn off his life support the following day. Mr Renata was sentenced to seven years in prison and must serve 80 per cent of the time. Taking into account the time he has already served, he will be eligible for parole in four years. Mr Renata is the second person to be sentenced under Queensland’s one-punch laws, which carry a maximum penalty of life imprisonment. The laws were introduced under the Safe Night Out Legislation Amendment Bill 2014 and form part of the Queensland Government’s Safe Night Out strategy, which aims to reduce alcohol and drug-related violence. Cole’s father, Steve Miller, agrees the focus needs to be on curbing senseless attacks to prevent further tragedy. His family, which includes Cole’s mother Mary-Leigh and Cole’s three older siblings, are stuck in a nightmare, and as Mr Miller told the court in October during a tearful victim impact statement, they continue to live in “utter turmoil”.
Until now he has chosen not to speak publicly on the issue of alcohol-related attacks. As he says, it won’t bring his son back. “Cole’s attacker was out and it was documented by the police that on a minimum of three previous occasions he tried to attack people,’’ Mr Miller tells My Weekly Preview of that fateful night. “That’s what they were out doing. It’s very sad. What do you do? The state spends a fortune trying to educate people. To me, it’s not working, is it?” His son’s death is only one in a string of unprovoked attacks. In 2006, Brisbane 15-year-old Matthew Stanley died after being king-hit at a birthday party. In 2012, 18-yearold Thomas Kelly was killed in a cowardpunch attack in Sydney’s King Cross. Daniel Christie, also 18, was killed in the same area two years later. More recently, the attack on Melbourne heart surgeon and father of two, Patrick Pritzwald-Stegmann, 41, shocked the nation after he was fatally punched for asking someone to not smoke at the entrance of the hospital where he worked. Sunshine Coast lifesaver Josh Mill was 22 when he was set upon at the Caloundra taxi rank in 2009. As he lay unconscious, his attacker continued to punch him. And, only last month a teenager was struck down in a one-punch attack in Maroochydore and left with a broken jaw. A Monash University study, King Hit Fatalities in Australia, 2000-2012: The Role of Alcohol and Other Drugs identified 90 deaths. Of these, 24 happened in Queensland. It’s believed that the overall national figure has since grown to around 95. Alarmingly, one in five Australians aged 14 years or older reported being a victim of an alcohol-related incident in 2016, according to statistics from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare. In the past 21 months, Steve Miller has spoken to his fair share of academics and politicians about the issue. While he hastily admits he is not an expert, he believes the core of the issue is Australia’s social and cultural problems. “It’s a real problem in Australia these days. It’s that social breakdown. People are hitting people for no reason at all,’’ he says. “Academics say that we’ve got to get these social issues sorted and encouraged into the children at a young age. In primary schools and preschools they have this system that they can implement about keeping your hands to yourself. They need to teach

COVER STORY the meaning of conscience at a young age. “It’s a problem that needs to be targeted and that’s where the money needs to be spent. There are a lot of issues to talk about… social differences, social scenarios. It’s a broad problem. “Number one, learning starts at home in a good family environment and number two, it’s good in those early days in primary schools to educate.” One person who is throwing his weight behind the issue is world boxing champion Danny Green. Driven by the growing number of one-punch attacks taking place, Mr Green took the matter into his own hands by launching a coward punch campaign. He funded the production of three TV advertisements highlighting the effects on the victim, the offender, family and friends, and worked alongside government bodies and major TV networks to air the commercials.
campaign,’’ he tells My Weekly Preview. “It’s cowardly to do these types of unsocial, disgraceful attacks. I’m looking to get an education tape that goes into schools.” Mr Green says his profile as a fighter has assisted the campaign. His profession is a combat sport, completely different to the cowardly nature of these attacks, he says. “It made sense for me being a fighter to do this. Many young men look up to what I do and respect what I do. “This is a type of cowardice. The media now, they don’t just turn a blind eye to it. Now society is trying to eradicate it.” He offers advice to people heading out for a night on the town: “Try and have situational awareness. “[It’s about] awareness of where they are, what they are doing and why. When out and about identify situations that turn bad quickly. Get out of there. “If your friend is starting to pick a fight…

“This is a type of cowardice. The media now, they don’t just turn a blind eye to it. Now society is trying to eradicate it” Danny Green
He is calling on the community to label these attacks exactly what they are – a coward’s punch, and he travels the country spreading the message about senseless violence. Mr Green, who put down his professional boxing gloves after defeating Anthony Mundine in a world-televised fight in February this year, says he has donated his money to the campaign for the past five years because it is something he passionately believes in. As expected, Mr Green has met with numerous victims – something he finds extremely difficult to do: “Emotionally it’s very tough. I get frustrated. “I don’t raise money to make things or to do gala things; this is purely an awareness
chill them out, talk to them, cool them down. It’s up to everyone to be a part of it. Identify situations and diffuse it before anything happens. The message is, ‘you are a coward, no one respects you, no one condones it and you will be looked upon as a coward’.” In addition to education campaigns, lockout laws are another method the State Government has dabbled in to reduce the violence on our streets. Proposed 1am lockout laws were scrapped by the government in January this year following report findings that there had been no “obvious reduction” in alcohol-induced violence since restrictions began in July, 2016. Currently, venues located in the government’s 15 identified Safe Night

a very concerning issue for society, which affects the health of our nation. Every society, and we’re no different, has aggression among certain segments of it that use physical violence to cope. A lot of times individuals can control this behaviour until the inhibitors are taken off. We can educate all we want about the harmful effects of alcohol, not that we shouldn’t, but that’s not going to stop the social enticement to drink. “Society has to limit the behaviour through consequences.” The Miller family will continue to live with the consequences of alcohol-fuelled violence every day. “How would you feel if your child was snapped out some day by some bloke?’’ Mr Miller questions. “We think it’s terrible, but we can’t imagine. All I know is that the problem is getting worse. When you see it, you say, ‘those poor people, how can they live with that, it’s terrible’ and you go on living your life. “When it happens to you… it rocks your world. I know for a fact, this guy [Renata], his life is ruined. His life is ruined for one stupid night where he got on the alcohol and didn’t respect. He wants forgiveness. He looked me in the eyes in the courtroom. I can’t give him anything. He has to live with what he did. “He’s in jail and we are grieving our son.”

Precincts (SNP) can’t serve alcohol after 3am (an hour later than venues outside these areas) and drinks that rapidly intoxicate, such as shots, can’t be served past midnight. Caloundra, Maroochydore and Mooloolaba have been identified as part of the Sunshine Coast SNP. Mr Green says lockout laws are one step towards reducing the problem. And he is not alone in that belief. Mr Miller supports the concept, as do two leading Coast academics. Dr Rachael Sharman, who is a lecturer of psychology at the University of the Sunshine Coast, says that contrary to belief, lockout laws do have a positive effect. Interestingly, she believes education is not the key to combatting this growing problem. “Education gets a panacea for everything these days and it rarely works,’’ she explains. “We seem to have an increasing attitude that children should be raised without consequences and I fundamentally disagree with that. I’m not convinced that education will work at all. “You are talking about young men who are silly for a start, they are also incredibly intoxicated. Something you taught them at the age of six, 16 or 60 isn’t going to work. They are young, dumb and full of confidence and they are out there intoxicated. “Some of the best things that work are the boring things like restrictions, the lockout laws. Again that’s a consequence, ‘we’ll stop you from being an idiot if you can’t stop yourself’. Like it or not, it works. Give people cause to double think their actions. “Australia does have a massive bingedrinking problem. People make excuses, ‘he’s just a lad having a night out’. We fob it off. In other cultures getting drunk to intoxication is considered quite disgusting. “Until we see a clear message from the government that it won’t be tolerated, we will continue to have these problems.” Dr Sharman’s colleague, Professor John Lowe, wholeheartedly agrees that consequences are key in this social issue. Prof Lowe, who is USC’s head of health and sport, says the data is overwhelming. “Two-thirds of all violence is alcohol related and it goes up if both people are drinking. It is

BREKKIE PIE BRINGS HOME THE BACON Out of a field of 1500 national entries, Nambour Christian College (NCC) students brought home a bronze medal from the Great Aussie Meat Pie Competition held at the Sydney Fine Food Festival recently. NCC Head of Hospitality John Shuttleworth says the 17 Year 11 and 12 pastry and baking students were awarded for their delicious Big Al Brekkie Pie. The win was even sweeter given the team were the only school in the country to enter and were up against professional bakers. NCC is the only school in Queensland, and one of three throughout Australia, that offers a Certificate II in Retail Baking Assistance.
WE’RE SMART COOKIES IN THE DIGITAL REALM The Sunshine Coast has again been named a Smart21 community for 2018 by the Intelligent Community Forum (ICF), during the 4th Annual Next Gen Tech Conference in New York City. Mayor Mark Jamieson says Smart21 represent the best models of economic, social and cultural development in the digital age. This is the fourth time the region has been named a Smart21 community after being selected from a group of nearly 400 other communities throughout the world, with other finalists in Canada, the United States, Taiwan, Finland and France.

Another division one win lands on the Sunshine Coast, this time with a Palmwoods family celebrating a $3-million win. The family held one of the seven division one winning entries nationally in Saturday Gold Lotto draw 3785 on October 28. Each took home a division one prize of $3 million. The private syndicate’s System 9 entry won a total of 144 times in the draw, bolstering their total prize to $3,132,289.75. The winner says the family syndicate had been running for years using the same marked numbers. “We’ve been waiting since yesterday morning for your call,” one of the family members said when a Golden Casket official phoned.

HAVE YOU GOT A WINNING IDEA FOR HACKFEST? Get your grey cells engaged and head along to Hackfest, the Sunshine Coast’s premier innovation event.
D
o you have a great idea that could make the Sunshine Coast an even better place to live? If so, Hackfest 2017 wants you. Now in its third year, Hackfest is all about creating solutions for a smarter region. You don’t have to be a computer whiz to make a mark at the three-day event, just turn up with a big idea and let your powers of innovation run free. To help get the creative juices flowing, an IdeasFest will be held on Tuesday, November 14 from 7pm at the Hive Business Space, which overlooks the site where the new Maroochydore CBD is taking shape. Economic Development Portfolio Councillor Stephen Robinson says IdeasFest will serve as an appetiser to Hackfest 2017 on November 24–26. “In previous years we’ve held IdeasFest at the same time as Hackfest, but this time we’re making it a stand-alone event to generate even more momentum and excitement for the main event a week later,” Cr Robinson says. “It’ll be an opportunity for absolutely anyone and everyone to come along and share their great ideas or solutions to problems they see in our community. Anyone who submits an idea will be able to view and
make comments on other ideas that have been submitted. “Most of the ideas will go on display at the Hackfest launch night and will be in contention to be one of our winning entrants in 2017.” Mountain Creek couple Adam and Allison Roth took out the top honours in Hackfest 2016 by combining their love for live music with the frustration of not being able to find out who’s playing when and where, to create an innovative app called Coast Live!, which is
now available on Google Play. An interactive app, titled Lucky Dip, which focuses on activities on the Sunshine Coast and lets the user select what they want to do, at what type of location as well as how far they are happy to travel, was last year’s overall runner-up and winner of the smartest use of open data award. Hackfest 2017 participants will have access to open data from the council as well as the State and Federal governments. Cr Robinson says Hackfest closely aligns with the council’s Smart City Framework. “We’re progressing towards the Coast having the latest in global technologies for lighting, waste, parking, assets and other infrastructure and services to enhance the lives of our residents and visitors through this new Maroochydore CBD,” Cr Robinson says. Sunshine Coast Council Hackfest 2017 will run from 5pm on Friday, November 24 to 6pm on Sunday, November 26. An opening night event will be held at The Hive, which will be a great chance for individual hackers looking to form a team. Hackfest is free to enter and prizes include a paid three-month ICT internship with the council.
To register or send in your idea for the hackers, email hackfest@sunshinecoast. qld.gov.au or go to sunshinecoast.qld. gov.au/Experience-Sunshine-Coast/ Events/HackFest. My Weekly Preview is a proud supporter of Hackfest.

OLDER SOLDIER TO BE REMEMBERED A Buderim man who died in WWI at the age of 45 had hoped to set an example for young Australians. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.
W
hile some young men increased their age on paper in order to enlist for World War I, a Buderim resident shaved a few years off of his. John Dahl was 44 years old when he signed up for the Australian army late in 1915. The widower and father-of-one, who was killed in action shortly after arriving in France a year later, has been chosen as the Buderim War Memorial Community Association’s ANZAC and Remembrance Day Committee’s local hero. Committee member Geoffrey Hole says Sapper John Dahl is vastly different to the decorated war hero Eric Foote, who was celebrated as Buderim Hero last year. These differences not only in age, but background, demonstrate the wide cross section of young men who enlisted in World War I. Mr Dahl will be remembered along with the more than 60,000 of his comrades who died in the war. “We know how John Dahl felt about the shortcomings of younger people not entering the services, because he was interviewed by the local correspondent of the Brisbane Times, a friend of his, before he left for the Western Front in France,” Mr Hole says.
The Times quotes Mr Dahl as saying youngsters were “...too scared and not patriotic enough” to join the fight. “Because he had that interview done before he went away, it gave a contemporary feel for what was going through the minds of people before they went off to war,” Mr Hole says. “By 1916, Australians had seen some pretty awful things on the western front,
particularly in Gallipoli, and the number of recruitments was falling off. John felt that he needed to set an example for the young fellows that weren’t stepping up and getting involved anymore.” A Queensland Rail labourer until 1901, Mr Dahl had moved to the Sunshine Coast to start a small fruit orchard at Mons in his thirties and left from Adelaide on HMAT A29 Suevic on May 31, 1916 as part of the 11th Field Regiment of Engineers. He was based in the support line at Armentieres and was tasked with the job of bridge repairs and securing trenches for artillery. Mr Dahl was killed in action on Christmas Eve, 1916, leaving his son John Addison Dahl in the full-time care of Mr Dahl’s sister. Mr Hole says they have been trying to track down Mr Dahl’s son and any other relatives to invite them to the Buderim service, which will be led by retired Army officer Drew Milled with accompanying music from the Buderim Mountain State School Choir and String Ensemble. The Buderim Remembrance Day commemoration will be held on November 11 at 10.30am at the E J Foote War Memorial Sanctuary, Park Lane, Buderim.

A TRIBUTE TO JAMES Acker’s Weekend aims to keep James Ackerman’s legacy alive.
F
ootballer James Ackerman’s legacy will live on with the upcoming Acker’s Weekend packed with events to boost awareness for organ and tissue donation, as well as raising money for new equipment for the Sunshine Coast
University Hospital. Mr Ackerman died in hospital in June 2015 after being injured by a shoulder charge while playing in the position of prop for the Sunshine Coast Falcons during an Intrust Super Cup game against Norths. His family have become passionate advocates for organ and tissue donation, and the upcoming Acker’s Weekend will solidify their message. The weekend will kick off on November 11 with the James Ackerman Memorial Cricket Match, which will see the Ackers All Stars fighting to retain their Memorial Shield as they battle it out on the cricket pitch with Lucky Stars Australia. The free match will begin at 5pm at the
Caloundra Cricket Club and will feature former Brisbane Bronco Jack Reed, Queensland Bulls cricket player Nathan Reardon and Sunshine Coast Falcon players. The evening will feature a host of raffles and items up for grabs in an auction as well as special guest appearances. The James Ackerman Memorial Race Day is on November 12 from 11am to 5pm at the Sunshine Coast Turf Club. Tickets are $10 for general entry. Mr Ackerman’s aunt Kaylene Hart says all of the money raised at both events will be donated to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital to help fund further items needed in the adult and pediatric intensive care units. “(These are) all wards that we have personal experience with from losing James to having (his daughter) Milly so unwell last year,” she says. “It’s our way of giving back to a community that has so generously supported us since losing James.”

s a self-managed superannuation fund (SMSF) the right structure for me? This is a question we are often asked when we meet with current and prospective clients. As you can appreciate, the answer is different for each client as there are a number of factors to consider. Importantly, there are a number of things we need to know before answering this question. How much money do you have in superannuation? For what purpose(s) do you wish to establish an SMSF? Is there a particular type of investment you are looking to access? What stage of life are you at? Are you living in Australia or planning to move overseas? What is your personal health situation and are you capable of making investment and strategic decisions? There are a number of pros and cons associated with establishing and maintaining an SMSF and you should have a good understanding of them before proceeding. An SMSF may give you much more choice over what you invest in and how you structure that investment. Importantly, you as trustee (in other words, the person responsible for running the fund) have much more control and flexibility over how both investments and strategic advice is implemented, which could result in a potentially better outcome when you compare it with holding your funds in an industry or retail super fund. An SMSF may allow you to pool your family superannuation savings for the
purpose of investing in a much more cost-effective manner. It might also give you greater control and flexibility around the implementation of estate-planning wishes. On the other hand, you need to consider what the SMSF will cost you to establish and maintain. This is particularly important if you have a smaller amount of superannuation savings. Additionally, as trustee you have a greater degree of legal responsibility to the Australian Tax Office and to the other trustees and members of the SMSF. It is particularly important to know that you will not be eligible for compensation
“There are a number of things to be considered before establishing an SMSF” under superannuation laws if the SMSF suffers loss as a result of theft or fraud in the underlying investment asset. As you can appreciate, there are a number of things that need to be considered before establishing an SMSF. If you currently have an SMSF, you should consider reviewing your personal situation and asking yourself whether or not you should continue to have one. An SMSF is not for everyone. There are great costeffective alternatives to SMSFs that will allow you to simplify your retirement while maintaining control. People who are looking to establish an SMSF or have one should seek professional advice before making any decisions. STRENGTH IN NUMBERS Former Olympic gymnast Barry Cheales says Buderim Men’s Shed has given him a new purpose in life after retirement. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.
IMAGE: TRACY NAUGHTON
I
t was 2010 when former gymnast Barry Cheales found himself living in a small unit in Maroochydore. He and his wife Ros had left Brisbane, their four children had left home, and Mr Cheales found himself at a loss as to what to do with his days. “In a unit you can’t have a workshop or any tools, there’s no room to do anything,” he says. “In retirement you have a lot of time on your hands. You can play golf and do a bit of travelling, which is great, but there’s only so much of that you can do before you start thinking there’s got to be more to life.” Mr Cheales won an Order of Australia Medal for his contribution to sport after many years competing as a gymnast and serving as the inaugural national coach for 10 years, as well as officiating at a national level. He competed at the Turkey Olympics in 1964 and the Mexico Olympics in 1968, coached the Australian gymnastics team at the 1972 Munich Olympics and was the manager coach at the Montreal Olympics. Along with Ros, also a gymnast, he started the Brisbane Gymnastics Club, which ran for 25 years, and he also lectured in human movement studies at the Queensland University of Technology for more than 30 years. It’s clear an idle retirement was never going to be an option for this dynamo. When he heard about Buderim Men’s Shed, which was established in early 2011, he signed up. Today, he’s vice president of the organisation – one of Australia’s largest, with 298 members – and is busy organising grants and tackling admin for the rapidly expanding group. “My Dad was a home handyman and taught me some basic skills in my youth,” he says. “I always worked on the basis if it’s broken try and fix it, if you can’t fix it, get the professionals in. I built a lot of furniture and renovated houses while the kids were growing up. Since joining the men’s shed, I’ve made a couple of cupboards, bread boards and occasional tables. Now I’m in the office, working with governments and fundraising sources.” Mr Cheales has experienced first-hand the physical, mental and emotional benefits men’s sheds provide. With 12 sheds on the Sunshine Coast alone and 1100 across Australia, the movement has taken off in recent years. “The main benefit of joining a men’s shed is having somewhere to go where you can talk to blokes without being judged,” Mr Cheales says. “You can tinker making toys or learn a new skill, it activates the brain and over a period of time you have a new bunch of friends. Blokes talk about a colonoscopy they just had, someone will say, ‘geez, I need one of those, how did it go’? You get more information you probably wouldn’t ask your doctor about. “Guys will probably open up a bit more freely if they’re
Barry Cheales at Buderim Men’s Shed and right, as a gymnast actively doing something and working with a couple of fellows. The smoko room is also a great avenue for people opening up. Some just listen and don’t say anything.” With the sense of isolation that can accompany retirement contributing to depression in older men, Mr Cheales believe men’s sheds provide an invaluable haven. “There’s good camaraderie in the men’s shed movement,” he says. “It’s just such a good thing for blokes. They say to us the women in Buderim are happiest on the days the men go down to the shed. You can’t say because a man went to the men’s shed he didn’t commit suicide, but we have anecdotal evidence from individuals and families saying the men’s shed has been the remaking of their father or husband. He’s found a new lease on life and found somewhere to go and to be valued.” Mr Cheales says at least 100 blokes turn up to the general meeting every third Tuesday and there’s a mandatory health talk afterwards, with health professionals visiting to address everything from prostate cancer to how to lift properly. And the shed isn’t all about woodwork, either. It also offers gardening, art, lead lighting, toy making, metalwork, computer skills, leatherwork, upholstery, billiards, a book club and a ‘yackety
yak’ session, which is all about having a good old chinwag about a chosen subject with a TAFE teacher facilitating. Buderim Men’s Shed’s home at Mill Road has been generously provided by owners Dr Bill Glasson and Professor Claire Jackson, however this was a temporary arrangement. On Tuesday, the first sod was turned on the new Buderim Men’s Shed property at Kuluin, which will hold three sheds – one to house the hard machinery, one for central administration and the third for an art studio. The Federal Government awarded the Buderim Men’s Shed a grant of $500,000 under its Building Better Regions program for the new facility. Buderim LNP candidate Brent Mickelberg has pledged $600,000 if he wins the seat in the upcoming state election, while Buderim One Nation candidate Steve Dickson has pledged $500,000 if he wins. There have also been many donations including $170,000 worth of earthworks from Shadforths Civil Contractors. The group has also raised $400,000 of its own. It’s hoped two upcoming fundraisers will add to the funds already raised. The first is the annual Open Day, to be held on Saturday, November 18, where visitors can purchase handmade items. The second is a breakfast at Buderim Tavern on Friday, December 8 featuring bestselling author and body language expert Allan Pease. “It has been a big learning curve for a group of retired men over the past four or five years to build the shed into what it is today,” Mr Cheale says. “When fellows go on holidays, we visit other sheds and fellows from other sheds come and visit ours. “We also work closely with the University of the Sunshine Coast. We provide subjects for the Thompson Institute (neuroscience research centre) and we have exercise physiology students come up and do work placements.”
For more information about the breakfast with Allan Pease call Ken O’Flaherty on 0417 646 759 or email: info.bsg@westnet.com.au. For information on the open day, call Barry Cheales on 0414 3799932.

MY BODY
Summer hair inspiration She’s had every style from long to super-short, but we think US actor Jaimie Alexander looks best with this gorgeous, textured bob. This versatile look is set to be huge this summer and suits most face shapes. It’s a wash and wear style that’s perfect for carefree beach days and summer parties. The star avoids blow-drying her hair, preferring to simply scrunch in a bit of mousse to add body. Her everyday makeup look is natural, with just a little eyeliner and lip balm, but for evening she likes to play up her green eyes with a smoky eye, dark eyeliner, thick lashes with a nude lip and a spritz of Miss Dior, her favourite scent.

NUDE BY NATURE
By Leigh Robshaw Nude By Nature’s Flawless New Liquid Foundation is designed to give perfect coverage. It’s a thick formula with a matte finish that does give a smooth, more even look to the complexion. However, my skin is very dry and I found it wasn’t quite moisturising enough for me and tended to flake, but for normal to oily skin, it would be a great summer foundation. I also tried the Nude by Nature Flawless New Concealer in Rose Beige, which gave exc excellent coverage under my eyes and on bl ble blemishes. Its longwearing formula stays pu put for the day and doesn’t wipe off the se second you apply makeup over it.

COUNCIL URGING WOMEN TO GET ACTIVE Women and girls are being urged to grab a yoga matt or throw on a leotard and get active this month. Sunshine Coast Council is hosting its free Healthy Sunshine Coast Get Out Get Active classes with activities ranging from dancing, community yoga and group fitness. Councillor Jenny McKay encourages females to get involved in the award-winning program. “Research showed women and girls are less likely to participate in physical activity so we asked the community for their suggestions on what would inspire them to take the first step to being active,’’ she says. “This feedback allowed us to understand the barriers, motivations and triggers women and girls face in daily life and I believe we have successfully designed a welcoming and energising program. To register visit sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au and search for ‘Healthy Sunshine Coast’.
IN THE NEWS A new drug approved to treat breast cancer could be used as a powerful weapon against aggressive forms of pancreatic cancer. Australia’s Garvan Institute of Medical Research has shown in preclinical models that Palbociclib effectively targets a major subtype of pancreatic cancer that affects two-thirds of all patients with the deadly disease.
Patient trials are underway and lead research author Dr Marina Pajic says it’s hoped the drug can be easily repurposed. The five-year survival rate of pancreatic cancer is seven per cent, with standard therapy a ‘one-size-fits-all’ combination chemotherapy approach. Dr Pajic says the study was designed to meet an urgent need for new, targeted therapies. AAP
ARE YOUR FEARS STEALING YOUR LIFE? Jodi Chapman reminds us that life is an adventure, and this realisation is the key to living a happy life.
I
s fear holding you back from being happy? From achieving your goals and dreams, or even simply achieving daily tasks? Fears can be innate, they can develop over time if exposed to stress, or they could be a result of your biochemistry, causing anxiety. So where is yours coming from, and how much time will you waste living this way? Sometimes our experiences in life are lessons, to learn to move forward and achieve happiness, to face our fears and find peace. To resolve fears we must understand them. Emotionally, fears can develop from expectations formed throughout life that have not come to fruition, and perhaps we fear loss, or dread something terrible will happen. In early life, we have no expectation as we have nothing learned to compare to, so we live life experiencing
every day as a new adventure. Once aware of what we want, we form an expectation or belief from what we know, forgetting how to experience, and falling into expectation of what life should be. This keeps us from feeling the joy and happiness in that day when we don’t reach that expectation. Are you afraid of what you are missing, chasing what you don’t have, and wasting time instead of enjoying what you do have or spending that time working towards what you want? Are you holding the door open for the expectations of the past, yet losing all the time you need to work on the dreams of the future? Let’s experience again rather than expect, and learn to be adventurous again.

APP OF THE WEEK
FREE DISASTER ALERTS When severe weather is approaching, flood waters are starting to rise or there’s another type of disaster in the region, the Sunshine Coast Council wants to provide important alerts to the community as quickly as possible. That’s why the council has made it even easier to get the alerts you need, straight to your phone or tablet, with its CoastAlert notification service. The push notifications, linked to information on the council’s Disaster Hub website, are a new feature. To receive the alerts, simply download SCCApp, and emergency notifications will be automatically sent to smartphones and other mobile devices that have the app installed. SCCApp is available from the AppStore or Google Play.
DIY KIT OFFERS INFINITE FUN Tech is always great to admire, but it’s when you can get involved and create your own gadget that things get really interesting. Core Electronics has developed the Desktop Infinity Mirror Kit, which creates an optical illusion that appears to show a tunnel of light that tears through space. Because it is sent as a kit, you have everything you need to recreate the stunning mirror, or you can dive deeper into the tutorials and level-up your coding or go rogue and create something completely unique. The embedded controller is also WiFi enabled, opening up the possibilities of web interaction. The pack includes pre-cut acrylic panels, a particle photon development board with WiFi, all required electronics bits and pieces for assembly, fasteners, the power supply, instruction manual and an open offer for support from the Core Electronics team. The Desktop Infinity Mirror is available on kickstarter.com and costs $100 with free shipping in Australia. Estimated delivery is in November.
STUDY AIMS TO BUILD TRUST IN TECHNOLOGY A University of the Sunshine Coast study is looking for ways to help restore the trust of older Australians in online technology if they become victims. PhD student Judy Watson aims to interview people aged 55 years and over who have had their identity stolen and would like to help others in similar situations. “The theft of personal information from scams is increasingly common and it is important to gain deeper understanding of how this problem influences the intentions of older adults to continue to use online platforms,” Ms Watson says. “The information we collect will be used to develop recommendations to help reduce the incidence of identity theft, lessen its impact, build resilience and restore people’s trust.” Watson expects to complete her research by early 2019. People interested in taking part in the confidential study can email Judy.Watson@research.usc.edu.au.
LATEST PODCASTS BEVERLEY WANG HOSTS THE PODCAST AUSTRALIA NEEDS RIGHT NOW A new barrier-breaking ABC podcast, It’s Not A Race, asks Australia to talk about race. Presented by executive producer of RN Drive Beverley Wang, the podcast takes a fearless look at the deeply ingrained issues of race and identity that define and divide us across our multicultural nation. “This is the podcast Australia needs right now,” Wang says. “Race, racism and difference are part of everyday life. We need the tools to acknowledge and talk about these subjects, especially if they’re out of our comfort zone.” Listen to opinion and insights about race from commentators and culture makers. MY OPINION
EMOJI ETIQUETTE
ACTION STATIONS FOR RDA
Sami Muirhead has enthusiastically adopted the language of emojis – just don’t send her a love heart or you’ll get a cranky face in return.
Darrell Edwards says a new phase for the RDA Sunshine Coast will see our region’s economic profile continue to grow in the right direction.
S
o the penchant for swerving the correct use of the English language continues, as we love to shorten everything when it comes to talking and texting to each other in our wonderful country. #Totes! There is even a movie all about the addictive little emoji. And when you can use an emoji, why on earth would you write the word? Nothing pleases me more than sending a text littered with emojis when all the kids are asleep as I sit and drink my wine and foolishly tell myself how witty and funny I truly am. Yes, I know how to party! I was a reluctant latecomer to embrace using emojis and I still only use them with good friends or family. Nothing infuriates me more than receiving a ‘heart’ emoji from someone I do not know very well. Can you imagine going for a job interview and asking how you went in the process and receiving a frowny face? Respect the emoji etiquette, people. And my long-suffering husband knows he is banned from sending me a ‘thumbs up’ emoji if he ever wants ‘special’ time again. The thumbs up emoji is for mates but not for lovers in my crazy head. So, those in my inner circle have been slammed with colourful little pictures as I sit delighted with myself sending out a spray of texts to my victims… um sorry, family. For example, “Mum! The kids and I had Mexican for tea!” can be transformed into a virtual fiesta with little pictures of a taco, a cactus, a
Mexican flag, a chilli, a Latin dancer, and the list goes on. It is enough fun to make me cook Mexican every night just so I can overdose on emoji use. In the last week Apple released 70 new emojis. Hoorah! I do not know how to access the new little icons but I am still excited because I know when I next see my 10-yearold nephew, he will sort my phone out for me. Yes, this does make me feel old and indeed useless, but I know how to use a fax machine and the 10-year-old does not. Admittedly, he will never need to know. The new emojis include a T-rex dinosaur, a person vomiting green gunk, an orange love heart, a vampire, a hedgehog and an exploding head. I would have liked a mum sitting on a toilet with three little people trying to barge in, but apparently Apple is way too cool for this icon. I would also like a mum with a little thought bubble above her head dreaming of sleeping, drinking cocktails, and binge watching trash TV. Earlier this year, Mark Zuckerberg posted the most popular emojis on Facebook are the smiling face with open eyes, and the crying face. Australia had the most carefree report of all the countries in the survey, being leading users of emoji for booze, drugs, junk food and holiday celebrations. So I am fairly desperate to download those 70 new emojis. I may have to go and visit my nephew just so I can stay up late sending out a barrage of text messages. Look out, Mum!

hat a fulfilling ride it has been since I joined RDA Sunshine Coast a little more than 18 months ago. Now the RDA network is about to embark on a new phase, with increased focus on investment attraction, international trade partnerships and leveraging public and private sector investment. The move came about following a review of RDA committees at the instigation of Regional Development Minister Fiona Nash. RDA committees will continue to play an active and facilitative role in their communities with a clear goal to grow strong and confident regional economies. Our local committee has collaborated and partnered in more than 22 events, delivering critical funding to ensure success. These are some of the achievements: Digital Sunshine Coast Action Plan – An ongoing collaborative project hosted by RDASC, Sunshine Coast Council and Noosa Council to drive digital industry sector development, and support all sectors of the regional economy that will be impacted by digital innovation. Digital Scorecard – An ongoing partnership with the State Department of Science, Information Technology and Innovation to develop a review of technology to help businesses and communities improve their resilience, competitiveness, connectivity and self-sufficiency by embracing innovation, entrepreneurship and digital technologies.
Advancing Regional Innovation Program – RDASC, along with the Sunshine Coast and Noosa Councils, are lead collaborators in this State Government program to attract, connect and support innovators across the Sunshine Coast region. Coding and Programming Curriculum – RDASC, in partnership with TAFE Queensland East Coast and Sunshine Coast Council launched a six-week Introduction to Coding course for those looking to develop their skills in coding. Start Up Business Curriculum – Delivered through TAFE Queensland East Coast and directed at Year 11 and 12 students who do not wish to attend university but would like to start their own businesses. The course encourages innovation and supports the economy by creating jobs for youth. Ripple Effect – This ongoing project informs and inspires local small business operators to leverage business prospects available as a result of the $1.8-billion Sunshine Coast University Hospital and how to best capitalise on these opportunities. Building Better Regions Fund (BBRF) – We successfully supported grant applications under the Building Better Regions Fund for Buderim’s Men’s Shed ($500,000) and The Events Centre in Caloundra ($3 million). Sunshine Coast Transport Forum – RDASC hosted the first Sunshine Coast Transport Infrastructure Forum in June 2017 to discuss the growing need to prioritise transport infrastructure on the Sunshine Coast.

FROM THE MAYOR
This has been a great year for our Sunshine Coast. Not only have we celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Naming of the Sunshine Coast, we have witnessed the opening of two of our major projects – the Sunshine Coast University Hospital in the Kawana health precinct and Sunshine Coast Solar Farm at Valdora. There has also been significant progress in the creation of our new CBD at Maroochydore and the expansion of our Sunshine Coast Airport. Our unemployment rate of 4.9 per cent continues to be below the state average, building approvals are at an eight-year high, we have posted new records in domestic and international tourism visitation, and there is more than $10 billion in public and private projects being delivered or in the pipeline. Crucially – and this is great news for our business community who rely on consumer spending – the Sunshine Coast’s average household income is rising, which is a major goal of my mayoralty. Household incomes are now 10 per cent below the state average compared with 22.3 per cent below the average in 2013. I’m sure we can build on the achievements from this year in 2018. Mark Jamieson Mayor Sunshine Coast Council
INFRASTRUCTURE
FUNDING FOR THE COMMUNITY When we build a new bridge, upgrade a popular skate park or widen a major road, it’s hard to miss. But there are some projects within council’s $237 million Capital Works Program this year you probably won’t notice – and it’s those that could make the biggest difference during storm season. We have upgraded SES facilities and established a second Field Coordination Centre in Caloundra to help our Local Disaster Management Group coordinate urgent repairs during severe weather events. After finding a new home for the Nambour SES Group in Woombye last year, we have added a new amenities block with toilets and showers, a kitchenette, additional office spaces, a meeting room and a large training space. Some of our Get Ready Queensland Program disaster preparedness funding has been allocated towards a new sandbagging machine for the SES, making it faster and easier to fill up the bags ahead of the next severe weather event.
CLEANING OUR BEACHES More than 200 Sunshine Coast school students joined conservation volunteers and local turtle experts to collect 200 kilos of rubbish from beaches across the region in just one hour last week ahead of the annual turtle nesting season. Students from eight local schools across the region joined forces with council, Unitywater and volunteers from TurtleCare and Coolum and North Shore Coast Care at a beach clean-up event to reduce the amount of plastics on local beaches from Mudjimba to Currimundi. The rubbish and marine debris was recorded in the Australian Marine Debris Database. The clean-up day was the first of many events to assist volunteers with beach and dune conservation as female turtles prepare to lay their eggs along the Coast’s beaches. Thank you to all of our young environmental leaders who dedicated their time to helping our environment. Please dispose of your rubbish thoughtfully to protect our local turtles and marine life.
OLYMPIANS COMING A team of Olympic champions is coming to the Sunshine Coast for a pre-Commonwealth Games camp next year. We’ll be welcoming Australia’s women’s sevens rugby team who will preparing for a shot at another gold medal at the Gold Coast Games. They will be based at Caloundra from April 5-11.
ROUNDABOUT OPENS Residents have welcomed improved traffic flow at the intersection of Mons and Owen Creek roads in Forest Glen after a new roundabout was opened months ahead of schedule. The $2.6 million project will accommodate future traffic volumes as the business district continues to grow. The upgrade also includes cycle lanes, landscaping and a fourth leg to service future uses.

MY TIME
TODD’S TALES Todd Widdicombe has got something to say about commonplace cliches.
T
he English language is a ripper. For example, I’ve just discovered that a dog named Ralph can almost say his own name. You’re repeating it now, right? Ralph, Ralph. However, there are certain famous old sayings that are nuttier than a Snickers bar and need to have a good, long, hard look at themselves. Sayings that have been around since the dawn of time but just like the last Transformers movie don’t make any sense, and suck.
Let’s start with “no use crying over spilt milk”. Yep, we’ve all heard it before. Some of us have even said it, but it’s wrong people, wrong. Sure you say there’s no use crying over spilt milk, but what if it’s the last milk on earth and there’s no more for your brekkie coffee and even worse what if it’s Bonsoy? That stuff’s hell expensive! “Believe you me.” What? That’s loco. If I’m telling you a crazy fact why would I say “believe you me”? Surely if I’m the one spinning the yarn it should be “believe me, you”. How hard is it seriously? “Time to fight fire with fire.” What was that? I’m pretty sure the experts use water. “A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.” No, no, no. A bird in the hand is worthless. Try paying for a schooner at your local with a bird in the hand and they’ll call the cops. “Laughter is the best medicine.” Not if you’ve got herpes. Nobody’s laughing then. “Never look a gift horse in the mouth.” This is preposterous. ALWAYS look a gift horse in the mouth – the ancient city of Troy was literally burned to the ground by not looking a gift horse in the mouth. Have we learned nothing from history?
While I’m at it with our equine friends, what about “straight from the horse’s mouth”? What does this even mean? What, are horses some sort of almighty beacon of truth? No they’re liars who’ll say anything for a carrot and a cube of sugar. Horses are not to be trusted people. “I’m head over heels for her.” That makes no sense at all. We are all head over heels all the time. Except when we are sitting down – then we are head over groin – or when we are lying down. Head over heels indeed. It’s more a somersault than a saying. “Needless to say.” What was that? If it’s needless to say then why say it at all? It’s the saying that cancels itself out completely. It’s needless to say, it is without need, there is no need, so why say it? And that classic saying that every school teacher I’ve ever had said – “the early bird gets the worm”. Not sure that one has ever been scientifically proven. Sure you’d assume there’s a veritable smorgasbord of worms early in the morning, but let’s be honest, that early bird can have the worm because worms are gross and mornings are stupid. You might say the “early bird gets the worm” but I say “the second mouse gets the cheese”. Always.
TAPPIN INTO TOWN After playing to sold-out houses and receiving rave reviews around the world, Australia’s newest and hottest tap dance sensation is coming to Caloundra. The Tap Pack picks up where the Rat Pack left off, featuring songs from Bublé to Beyoncé, Sinatra to Ed Sheeran. When these hits are mixed with slick humour, high-energy entertainment and world-class tap dance, it’s easy to see why these gentlemen are Australia’s finest. The Tap Pack is on at The Events Centre, Caloundra on November 10 at 1.30pm. Tickets are $59.90 adult and $54.90 students and children and are available at theeventscentre.com.au.

CALENDAR GIRLS WILL SHINE IRISH CULTURE COMES TO LIFE It is a production that has been seen by more than two million people worldwide and continues to captivate audiences with the beautifully executed performances. It is The Rhythms of Ireland. Choreographed by two-time world Irish dance champion Michael Donnellan and musically directed by champion musicians Martin O’Connell and Thomas Johnston, the show promises an entertaining and spectacular evening of traditional Irish dance, music and song enhanced by stunning costumes, lighting and sound. The Rhythms of Ireland is at The Events Centre, Caloundra on November 11 at 8pm. Tickets are $69.90 adult or $64.90 concession and children under 15, and are available at theeventscentre.com.au.
The world-acclaimed Calendar Girls is the final show of a very successful year for The Lind Theatre. Director Judith Boyd has gathered a cast of talented actors from across the Sunshine Coast for a limited season of eight performances. Ms Boyd is confident performing Calendar Girls in such an intimate theatre makes the stage version even more powerful than the film version of the heart-warming comedy, which starred Helen Mirren. With the creative assistance of Andrew Clasohm of Creative Persona Photography, The Lind Theatre ladies have also created a delightful calendar, which will be for sale before and during the run of the show. All profits from the calendar will go to the Queensland Cancer Council. Calendar Girls is on at The Lind Theatre, 16 Mitchell Street, Nambour from November 10. Tickets are available at lindlane.com.au.

home GREEN UP Greenery was announced as this year’s Pantone Colour ur of the Year, and for good reason. Add a splash of green n paint to a room and create a unique feature wall. Alternatively, brighten up a white space by painting a vintage cabinet. We like the Green Pepper colour from Haymes Paint.
ON TREND: Jungle vibes
tip
Lush greens, deep blues and vibrant orange – welcome to the jungle. This quirky style has once again raised its head, taking on catwalks all over the globe. Fashion labels are dishing out the tropical-themed designs and consumers are lapping it up. And, as often is the case, the runway trends drive interior style. This time is no different with the theme popping up in homes around the world. All you need to do is take a stroll through local boutiques and homewares stores to see that this trend has certainly taken hold.
The entryway to your home is the perfect place to introduce the theme. Potted plants, large ornate mirrors and artwork are great fixtures for this space.

The Leaf outdoor cushion from Domayne will brighten up your outdoor or indoor entertaining spaces. Visit domayne.com.au sp domayne.com
Keep in mind that adopting the jungle theme doesn’t necessarily mean garish patterns and bold colour. This design perfectly illustrates how the addition of a simple cushion and potted plant can turn a plain chair and sitting room into a relaxing, tropical space.
TEXTURE Texture is important in design because it creates atmosphere and helps identify a style immediately. This wall hanging from Go Arty is the perfect element for a jungle-inspired room. Visit goarty.com.au
FINISHING TOUCHES A room’s styling doesn’t only rely on big ticket items such as furniture, paint and flooring. Decor accents are just as important in completing a style. Choose pieces that tie the design together nicely. We like this Byron lantern from Harvey Norman. Visit harveynorman.com.au

SHARING THE DESIGN LOVE
Creating the right feel is essential when undertaking home renovations, especially when you want a value increase to match your investment. Award-winning designer Adrian Ramsay will give you a glimpse into how it’s done. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.
A
ward-winning fashion and interior design guru Adrian Ramsay started his journey with humble beginnings, growing up on a farm outside Wellington in New Zealand. Although he lived in a rural town, he developed a passion for fashion and architecture at a young age, sketching the buildings he imagined from scenes in the Wild West novels that captivated him as a 10-year-old. He then went on to start designing custom-made formal trousers for his school friends. Both passions have developed into successful careers after Mr Ramsay quickly discovered a tendency towards innovation as opposed to following the grain. As a trained expert in the TRIZ methodology of systematic innovation, he spent several years at Airbus training engineers in innovation and problem solving across Europe, America and Australia before settling on the Sunshine Coast to start his own business, Adrian Ramsay Design House, in 2007. Mr Ramsay has since been involved in more than 100 home design projects throughout Australia, England, France, New Zealand and India. While it takes many years of study and hands-on experience to reach the heights of Mr Ramsay’s skill, he regularly hosts workshops to impart his knowledge with DIYers of all skill levels. His newest workshop is inspired by his latest USA design tour where he met with architects, interior designers and builders to discover design ideas and trends. “I was looking for a way to share my design knowledge to empower people to take on renovations and build homes that work for their lifestyles, families and environments,” Mr Ramsay says. “I understand what points they should be aware of when it comes to trends and
An Adrian Ramsay design outcomes. I see so many people who have the skills and passion and are just missing the experience and knowledge. “If I can share mine, this gives them the guidance to create a better home and environment. It benefits the whole family, which makes the world a better place.” Previous workshops have covered the topics of pools, bathrooms, kitchens, working with brick, rammed earth, and tropical trends and have attracted participants from across the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane and further afield. “I have worked with architects, other interior designers, builders, suppliers and people looking to tackle a project of their own at these workshops,” Mr Ramsay says. “Some are in their 20s, others in their 60s, with build budgets ranging from $10,000 to $2 million. While there isn’t a typical attendee, the common factor is
they love design and want to know more about it.” Mr Ramsay says a passion for designing living spaces is similar to those who get a thrill out of choosing what to wear. “You get to unpack the things that support you emotionally and wrap them around you in your home – it’s very satisfying and creates a place that’s you,” he says. “Also, there are a lot of homes that are poorly designed to start with that need reworking to meet personal needs and wants. “We expect a lot more these days than we did 30 years ago, so houses need to be altered to bring them up to the market and lifestyles. If you do it right, you’re adding great value to an investment so it’s smart to maximise any investment you have.” While on-trend styles might give homes

a more modern look, Mr Ramsay says homeowners need to remember the old adage “form follows function”. “When function is king, we get to enjoy what has been created as we interact with it,” he says. “We should always elevate beyond function to form, so that we add emotion to what we create. This is what design is really about. “When you have great function and form, you create ‘flow’, and this is special.”

ADRIAN RAMSAY’S TOP FIVE RENOVATION TIPS: 1. Do a needs analysis on your home. Don’t be short-sighted – look five to 10 years into the future. 2. Check out if you will be overcapitalising, and create a budget. 3. Get great design advice. You don’t know what you don’t know. Get a designer who wants to create a design that is all about you and within your budget. 4. Create a design priority list, based on how much you use each space you are looking at updating. For example, everyone in the home uses the kitchen, so it’s a high priority. 5. Don’t rush. Get it right on paper before you start to build.

SPRING GARDENING PROJECTS
S
pring is well and truly happening. The days are longer so it’s important to start your gardening early in the day and avoid the worst of the heat at midday. Remember your plants feel just the same – so whether it is watering, trimming, fertilising, transplanting or spraying, do this in the cool of the morning. There is still plenty of time to get summer annuals established and provide masses of colour. Now is the best time to be planting to Christmas displays. If you want a mass of red and white this festive season your best options are going to be petunias, dianthus, vinca and alyssum. Also keep an eye out for angelonia, dahlia, lobelia, torenia, verbena and cosmos. These will all perform well this season. In the vegie patch start on all the leafy greens. Start planting now for beans, corn, lettuce, bok choi, pak choi, silverbeet, pumpkins, watermelons, cucumbers and zucchini. Herbs such as basil, parsley, oregano, marjoram, mint and tarragon are all looking good at the moment. There are some key jobs to be done this month in the garden, so make sure you take advantage of the weather to keep growth happening all season. Azaleas, camellia, gardenia, magnolia and michelia have all
Marjorie Van Roy is a horticulturist and the director of Manawee Garden Centre. She is passionate about providing advice to customers ranging from the home gardener to the developer. Her aim is to create a garden or a space where people can gain pleasure and enjoyment from it. been or about to be flowering, which means it is time to fertilise. Use a specific fertiliser for these plants at least once a year. These plants are also fairly shallow rooted, so make sure you water well before fertilising, and water well after. Mulching will help ensure these plants don’t dry out and the fertiliser breaks down into the soil. Many citrus have been fruiting so it might be time to tidy up the trees and prepare for the next crop. The golden rule is always prune after fruiting, so if your tree is flowering you might have to wait until after the next crop. Ensure you prune to allow maximum sunlight to reach all parts of the tree, and fertilise well. Fruit and citrus
fertilisers should be applied every two to three months in most cases. Citrus trees likes plenty of water, but good drainage. With the warmer weather, the unfortunate reality is that many insects can cause significant damage to our plants. Check your plants early in the morning and spray at this time for maximum results. Identify the pest you are trying to treat, rather than just spraying indiscriminately – many insects are beneficial and will actually control the bad pests for you. If you aren’t sure, try to collect the insect in a jar or bag and bring it, along with a piece of the plant you found it on, to determine if the insect is a helper or a hindrance.

MOTORING PREVIEW
BEEFING UP THE E-CLASS The release of the Mercedes-Benz All-Terrain might be a sign of things to come from Europe, writes Peter Atkinson, AAP.
M
aybe it’s by virtue of our remote location at the bottom end of the globe. Perhaps it’s because we’re one of the few right-hand-drive markets in the automotive world. Or perhaps it’s because in global terms, Australia is a tiny speck on the radar for the big European manufacturers. Whatever the reason, we have tended to get a relatively small selection of the models produced by the world’s biggest marques. In Europe, all-wheel-drive is a popular option on many prestige models. Yet in
Australia, with the exception of SUV models, we see very little all-wheel grip in Euro dealerships. Audi is the exception, with all-wheel-drive Quattro versions of just about every car in its fleet. But the other big Euro players have largely stuck to front- or rear-wheel drive for their sedans and wagons. Maybe that’s beginning to change with the roll-out of this machine from MercedesBenz – its new E-Class All-Terrain model. It’s the first such variant to be unveiled Down Under by the German uber marque. Essentially it’s an E-Class luxury wagon
with Benz’s ‘4Matic’ all-wheel-drive system, plus more ground clearance and some tough-looking styling cues to emphasise its rugged persona. Don’t expect to see this one on many beaches or muddy tracks, though. More likely it’s here to appeal to the outdoorsy types who like to head from the city to the snow in winter, or mountain bike tracks in summer, and would like to do so in the comfort and safety of an all-wheel-drive machine. Particularly one with the worldfamous three-point star on the bonnet. The All-Terrain is offered in one form only – the E220 variant with a two-litre turbo-diesel engine. It provides adequate if not exactly breathtaking performance (143kW, 400NM) but with impressive fuel efficiency and driving range. It will go more than 1000 kilometres on a tankful – perfect for a weekend at the snow. The compromise is that it’s no firecracker to drive. It’s a little pedestrian away from the lights and lacks the responsiveness we’ve come to expect from high-end Euro diesels. That’s probably okay for the All-Terrain’s target market, because it’s primarily pitched as a car that will likely spend weekdays chugging around in commuter traffic and weekends loping along the freeway on the way to overnight adventures. And in that context it’s perfectly suited for purpose. Inside, the All-Terrain is premium Benz with a brilliant digital widescreen cockpit
format and impressive design with the turbo-style air vents, leather-trimmed dash and door fascias and the very best of finishes. Beautiful and practical. It’s a particularly serene and comfortable place to be. The All-Terrain is quite keenly priced at $109,900 plus onroad costs. By way of comparison, a Benz E220 diesel sedan (there’s no standard wagon on sale in Australia yet) is more than $15,000 cheaper than the All-Terrain. But it doesn’t offer all-wheel-drive. Which, when it all comes down to it, is the whole point.
MERCEDES-BENZ E220 ALL-TERRAIN HOW BIG? It’s based on the E-Class executive wagon – so it’s a full-sizer that gets some additional road presence courtesy of its raised ride height. There is plenty of space for five adults, plus all their gear, for a weekend getaway. HOW FAST? Not particularly. The four-cylinder diesel is efficient and effective, but not sporty. HOW THIRSTY? That diesel, combined with a nine-speed automatic transmission, will get you figures as low as a combined 5.7L/100km, which is phenomenal for such a big, versatile machine. HOW MUCH? Retail is $109,900 plus onroads; our test car added premium paint and a Vision Package that pushed the ask to $116,880.

Lady luck comes calling early in the week! But in order to achieve success, abstract ideas must be transformed into practical projects. (And remember there’s a fine line between divine dreams and disappointing delusions.)
Even routine tasks will be fun on Monday, as Venus and Jupiter help you enjoy each step along the way. Some exercise will also help you bounce through the week. But if you don’t communicate clearly, then misunderstandings are likely.

ARIES (MAR 21-APR 20) The Venus/Jupiter connection promises lots of fun, love and laughter. Romance could blossom or a friendship be rekindled. But resist the urge to be extravagant. On Tuesday adventure calls, as you tune into the wild child within.

Monday’s Venus/Jupiter connection helps you pump up the charm at home or work. People are hoping you’ll come up with creative ideas, so dig deep. Saturday’s new moon signals nurturing old relationships and establishing new ones.
Family life looks fabulous early in the week, when Venus and Jupiter bless relationships with your favourite relatives. It’s not all fun and frivolity though! From Friday onwards the new moon reminds you there’s a backlog of chores to do at home.
Venus and Jupiter encourage you to contribute more to your community. Social media is also favoured as you text or publish your ideas to an appreciative audience. Aim for a mental spring-clean on the weekend, as you adapt to new ways of thinking.

With party planets Venus and Jupiter linking up early in the week, it’s time to have fun, flirt, create and collaborate. So jump in and make the most of it! Then the new moon indicates a turnaround to do with money matters or self-esteem issues.
It’s a wonderful week to zero in on your special unique talent, and make a promise to yourself that you will develop it to full capacity. As entertainer (and fellow Scorpio) Katy Perry says “Find out what your gift is and nurture it.”
This week, with lucky Venus linking up with prosperity planet Jupiter, you’ll be given the opportunity to make extra money. And you’ll also be in the mood to spend! So strive to show some restraint, otherwise you’ll go from princess to pauper in a flash.

AQUARIUS (JAN 21-FEB 19)
PISCES (FEB 20-MAR 20)
Don’t hesitate to grab opportunities when they appear. If you maintain motivation and are proactive, then your life will move in new directions. With the new moon activating your hopes and wishes zone, it’s also time to review your goals and aspirations.
With Venus, Jupiter and the New Moon all stimulating your career zone, start thinking about strategic ways to create work opportunities and maximise your professional potential. It’s also a wonderful week to get positive feedback from your boss.
This week’s Venus/Jupiter vibes are wonderful for work and money. But don’t unintentionally mislead someone with mixed messages. Do your best to keep things clear. On the weekend, prepare for a fresh start in legal matters or commerce.

STATE ELECTION WISHLIST
NEW DEVELOPMENT A SURE THING
Approval has been granted for a new development in Marcoola with direct access to the beach – no roads to cross.
A
5.5-hectare parcel of vacant land right on the beach at Marcoola will be transformed into a multimillion-dollar mixed-use development. The Shore Marcoola has received approval from the Sunshine Coast Council and will include 33 direct access beachfront homes in stage one, followed by a 114-room hotel resort, 144-bed residential aged care facility, and a retail precinct. Equipment will be onsite next door to the Surf Air resort on David Low Way in the coming weeks. Project Director Damon Falcongreen says he expects titles will be issued on the completed 33 lots by May next year. “Our first priority will be delivering the home sites and we are confident that there will be strong interest due to the absolute beachfront location where residents can easily access the beach from their back gate without having a road or path to cross,” he says. Mr Falcongreen says the Brisbanebased owners acquired the property in November 2016 after carefully considering options for the site over a number of years. “Our interest in acquiring and
developing the site grew significantly when it became apparent that funding and approvals were in place for the new Sunshine Coast Airport runway, which is expected to be completed in 2020,” he says. “There is no doubt that the vast majority of Marcoola will benefit from reduced aircraft noise as a result of the direction of the new runway, which will only impact a reduced area well to the south of our site.” House and land prices at The Shore are
expected to begin from $880,000. With direct access to Marcoola beach from the freehold properties, Division 8 Councillor Jason O’Pray says the protection of the dunal foreshore into perpetuity has been an important part of negotiations with the developer. “It is also in keeping with council’s strong environmental and sustainable philosophy and we understand this arrangement may be the first of its kind in Australia,” Cr O’Pray says.

The REIQ has released its wishlist for the November 25 state election. CEO Antonia Mercorella says the election offers voters an opportunity to cast a vote for a candidate who recognises the importance that the real estate sector plays in the state’s economy. “Real estate employs around 50,000 Queenslanders and this makes it of huge significance to the future fortunes of Queensland,’’ she says. The three key focuses of the REIQ include the First Homeowner Grant, which can assist young people to get their foot on the property ladder. As it stands, only those first homebuyers who are building their first home or buying off the plan are eligible for the grant, which locks out thousands of equally-deserving young Queenslanders from the property market. Broadening the grant will bring thousands of young Queenslanders to the property market, the REIQ states. Second on the organisation’s agenda is the issue of stamp duty, which the REIQ is urging the government to abolish. Finally, the REIQ is requesting mandatory CPD. “Consumer protection is at the heart of the REIQ’s push for the government to introduce mandatory continuing professional development for all real estate practitioners,’’ the organisation reports.

SURF REPORT
with MWP’s man in the water
While he is a 100 to one shot winning this year’s world title, Julian Wilson is a bloody magician. You know when you watch a magician close up, and you walk away wondering how the hell did they do that? The same applies to some recent footage where he was surfing at Coolum. Just your standard back-side 360 air… no biggy. But he lands switch foot and rides out of it. Mind blown. Maybe he can do some magic at pipe. This weekend will have some swell with SE winds, so points I guess. I heard a whisper of a little cove protected from SE wind which has amazing sand banks on the high tide… not where you think either. Hint… black snake country!
