e visited the local nursery recently. It was at the request of our young son who has discovered the joys of gardening through his kindergarten program. He has been chatting non-stop about carrots, broccoli and herbs, and went so far as to plant offcuts of oranges and blueberries outdoors in a bid to establish his own garden. My husband has a bit of a green thumb, which is more than I can say for myself. The last plant I was gifted lasted a record four weeks. I felt like I deserved a gardening gold medal. Now we are in the throes of planting a variety of vegetables, and our son’s excitement is contagious. So much so, that I’ve noted the upcoming Queensland Garden Expo in my diary. The annual celebration is one of the country’s most loved gardening events. Gardening has many proven benefits. It reduces stress and anxiety, improves concentration and encourages physical movement. In our case, it is a great tool to connect as a family and to the planet – both great lessons for children. It also encourages an understanding of horticulture and the importance of nurturing wildlife, especially bees, which have been front and centre of media and scientific reports around the world. In fact, people are discovering the benefits of introducing bees and hives into their gardens, as we discover in this week’s cover story. Also, this edition we have the latest property news, including a commercial property update on the new and exciting Maroochy CBD. Enjoy.

QUICK CHAT

THE GOOD LIFE Where do you live? I am currently in Bli Bli, but I will move to Woombye soon, where I am building my own home. First job? Punching in the barcode numbers of winning scratchie tickets in the days before barcode scanners at a newsagents. It was a dream job for someone who loves magazines. What are you currently working on? I could go on and on here, but, essentially, I am getting the Women’s Lifestyle Expo ready for its best ever event on July 19 and 20 at the Maroochy RSL. Your family includes? My two teenagers, Connor, 17, and Anika, 14, and our two fluffy Irish longhair kittens, Coco (after Chanel) and McCaw (after Richie).

Favourite book? Anything by Cecelia Ahern or Maeve Binchy.

BIO

Alexandra Brunswick was born and raised in Germany before moving to New Zealand with her family. She studied law there and worked as a solicitor before she again moved, this time to the Sunshine Coast in 2000. In 2016 she met Women’s Lifestyle Expo founder Sue Frost. Ms Brunswick felt passionate about the expo straight away, so she bought the business from Ms Frost and her husband.

Choose iQ Shutters for all your INTERNAL SHUTTERS

Can you nominate a day in your life that turned out to be a turning point and why? Probably the day Sue Frost’s husband was telling me they were looking at selling the Women’s Lifestyle Expo. I could not stop thinking about it for three days and then knocked on their door to make them an offer. Your greatest regret? I try not to have regrets, as I just get on with things.

What are you reading now? A novel by Marian Keyes, which I am realising is probably a bit young for me now.

solicitor

Best day in your life and why? Being in Venice two years ago on a stunning day with my two children, my parents and my sister. It felt like something out of a movie with the people I love.

“Don’t sweat the small stuff. Just go with it and it will work out”

First car? A bright green Austin Morris. I still remember driving to McDonald’s with it for the first time. I felt so mature.

Alexandra Brunswick

If you could change one thing on the Sunshine Coast, what would it be? Less traffic!

What achievement are you most proud of? My two incredible children, who melt my heart and make it sing every day. Well, almost every day. You are happiest when? Eating dinner with my kids at the end of the day. What frustrates you the most? When I’m not as efficient as I think I could be.

Favourite song and why? The Wild Boys by Duran Duran, as it takes me back to when I was a teenager.

How do you deal with your frustrations? Depending on the time of day, either exercising, or having a glass of wine and watching TV with all other gadgets turned off.

What are you watching right now, would you recommend it, and why? House Rules, as I am building soon and it is giving me lots of inspiration.

If you could tell your 18-year-old self anything, what would it be? Don’t sweat the small stuff. Just go with it and it will work out.

When was the last time you played sport and what was it? I am part of a fitness group most mornings of the week, which is not really a sport, but we still are a team and have fun.

If you could have dinner with any three people, dead or alive, who would they be? Sorry, can it be four? It would be my four grandparents. If you won $1 million, how would you spend it? Invest it cleverly, so I can live off the proceeds.

Best advice you’ve been given? There is no time like the present. So don’t procrastinate and get it done now.

Tea or coffee and how do you have it? Black tea, no sugar.

What is your favourite place on the Sunshine Coast and why? I absolutely adore Montville in winter, as the mountain air is so fresh and the views are spectacular.

Adelaide scientists have identified a new species of extinct sea creature after 500 million-year-old fossils were found on Kangaroo Island. The large trilobites are related to modern crustaceans and insects and grow to about 30 centimetres in length. James Holmes, a PhD student at the University of Adelaide, says researchers named the new species Redlichia rex, similar to Tyrannosaurus rex, because of its large size. “(Also for) its formidable legs with spines used for crushing and shredding food, which may have been other trilobites,” he says. Mr Holmes says the fossil illustrates an evolutionary battle happening between predators and prey, with both developing more effective measures of defence. “The overall size and crushing legs of Redlichia rex are a likely consequence of the arms race that occurred at this time. “This giant trilobite was likely the terror of smaller creatures on the sea floor.” The specimen is currently on display at the South Australian Museum. – AAP

COVER STORY

Getting a buzz out of bees As amateur beekeeping continues to rise in popularity My Weekly Preview discovers there is a bright future for urban beekeepers. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

Y

ou can’t take them for walks, they won’t come when you call their names and you can’t snuggle up with them on the couch, but with the rise in backyard beekeeping, bees are becoming Australia’s newest pet. While they may not be top-tier pets like dogs or cats, there’s a lot to love about bees – and it’s not just the unlimited access to pure honey that’s prompting thousands of Australians to begin beekeeping. “Beekeeping in Queensland has increased exponentially and without precedent in the last three years,” says Jo Martin of the Queensland Beekeepers’ Association. “While this is overwhelmingly good news and a reflection of the growing awareness of bees and related products, the figures present an interesting scenario. “The number of hobbyist beekeepers – that is, beekeepers with between one to four hives – has increased by over 75 per cent since 2015. In December 2015 there were around 1800 beekeepers registered in Queensland running between one and four hives. The latest figure from the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries shows the number currently sits at 3755 beekeepers keeping between one and four hives as of June 7.” Celebrity chef and TV presenter Paul West is one of many who has jumped on the bee bandwagon. Speaking with My Weekly Preview in the lead-up to his appearance at

14 My Weekly Preview | June 28, 2019

14.indd 1

the Queensland Garden Expo, he explains how he became fascinated while hosting the two-part ABC Catalyst series The Great Australian Bee Challenge. “I wanted to deepen my understanding and appreciation of bees and dive into some of the science behind them as well,” he says. “Bees are a really hot topic and the general public has a lot of interest in them, but the average punter doesn’t know too much about them. We have entomologists who dedicate their entire lives to specific behaviour sets in bees and there’s still so much to know and so much unknown. “Bees are an incredible species of creature. They’ve been around for about 260 million years and to be around for that long, their behaviours and traits have to be so well refined and so complex. It’s incredible the work this tiny little animal can do. To create a kilo of honey, the total distance they have to travel is something like three times around the planet. Their societies are complex and their abilities are astounding.” Threats like colony collapse disorder, diseases like American foulbrood, pests like varroa mite, insecticides and habitat loss have caused bee populations to decline overseas, but Australia remains a safe haven. “Globally there are significant issues with decline of bee populations, but in Australia we have one of the most robust populations of European honey bees,” says Mr West. “We have yet to suffer from colony collapse

disorder and the varroa mite is yet to hit our shores. We actually export hives to the rest of the world. “In addition to that, we’ve got 1600 to 2000 species of native bees with more being identified as we speak.” In his Catalyst show, Mr West encouraged people to establish their own hives in urban backyards, a trend that is taking off as more people realise keeping bees is not only a fun and satisfying way to connect with nature’s life cycles, it’s also fascinating. “Without a doubt there’s more room for everyone in our community to become

equipment. That’s a one-off cost. In a good season a backyard beehive could produce 30 kilos of honey. That’s with about an hour every fortnight of maintenance – and you know it’s 100 per cent honey. “To your readership who wants to become involved in bee ownership, now’s the time to start thinking about it. Reach out to your local recreational beekeepers’ club. They are passionate and have a wealth of knowledge. They are super enthusiastic to see more people keeping bees and they will mentor you and hold your hand through the whole process.”

“There’s more room for everyone in our community to become engaged in the protection and keeping of bees” Paul West, TV presenter

engaged in the protection and keeping of bees,” he says. “There’s husbandry involved – you don’t just set a hive up and forget about it. In terms of production it’s pretty easy; it’s less maintenance than a dog. If you can keep a dog, you can keep a hive. “The initial set-up cost, you’re looking at around the $1000 mark to set yourself up with a swarm, hives and personal protective

Mr West stresses the importance of registering your hive with the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries because if there are any disease or pest outbreaks, the department needs to know where all the hives are before it spreads. “People think it’s over-regulation by government but they’re trying to protect the safety of Australia. Australia has such a huge myweeklypreview.com.au

COVER STORY

Dr Tim Heard border and there are ships and planes coming in on a regular basis. The varroa mite was discovered on a ship that came into Port Melbourne, but it was detected quickly and they averted the varroa mite apocalypse.” Also speaking at the Queensland Garden Expo will be Dr Tim Heard, an entomologist, ex-CSIRO scientist and president of the Australian Native Bee Association. The author of The Native Australian Bee Book, he is Australia’s foremost expert on Australian native stingless bees. “I’ll be talking about native stingless bees and I’ll also be talking about the broad diversity of bees that we have in Australia and their nesting and food requirements, which is where it interacts with gardening,” he says. “Gardeners can provide flowering plants, which bees derive their food – pollen and nectar – from. By growing those plants, gardeners can help bees, but bees help us by providing us with a richer connection with nature. “I’ll be talking about how we can set up a bee hotel, or a ‘B&B’. If you understand what bees need to nest in, you can boost numbers and provide a greater abundance of bees.” While Dr Heard says media reports of bee Armaggedon are exaggerated, he does want bees to be given the protection they deserve, and the more people who become involved with looking after bees, the better.

“You hear exaggerated statements that if bees go extinct, so will humans. The things that make life possible don’t rely on bees. Rice, wheat, root crops – they don’t require bees for pollination. You hear one-third of the food we eat is reliant on bees. That’s an exaggeration. It’s one-third of the crops that have some dependence on bee pollination. It’s more like 10 per cent of the food we eat and it amounts to $400 billion globally. “However, if bees went into a spiral of decreasing diversity, even if only 10 per cent of food production were lost, we’d have to clear more land, which would put more pressure on bees.” Dr Heard sees a huge future for Australian native stingless bees, which aren’t affected by the varroa mite, which is lethal to the European honey bee. And unlike many native Australian bee species, the stingless bee produces honey – but there’s a catch. “It’s barely available at the moment,” he says. “The world has just discovered stingless bees and everyone wants a bit of them. If you’ve got a beehive and you’re extracting honey from it, that’s going to slow down your breeding. “But honey from native stingless bees has a huge future. It’s rich in flavours and aromas of the Australian bush, wonderful eucalyptus oil-type flavours. We think that comes from the fact that the bees store their honey in the hive in pots made out of plant resins. That’s different to honey bees; honey bees store theirs in wax. Plant resins contain a lot more chemistry and a lot more antioxidants.” “Native stingless bees are highly sociable like honey bees and are a very adaptable species that does very well in our urban areas in the warmer parts of Australia, like southeast Queensland. I can see a future where individuals have half a dozen hives in their yards and act like brokers – they split hives, propagate them and take them out to farms. “This is pretty much the reverse of everything that happens in that farm-urban complex. Cities have a footprint where resources are drawn from farm areas – they go into cities and it’s one way. Here’s an example of how our urban backyard could

contribute to agricultural production.” Native stingless bees are completely harmless and are a great educational tool, able to be transported to schools and kindergartens where children can see busy bees in action. “Their potential for education is enormous,” Tim Heard says. “Kids love them. Kids are so strongly drawn to them. They can look inside observational hives and see the working of the hives.” So, could the native stingless bee become a new Australian pet? “I think they are already well along that path of becoming a new pet,” Dr Heard says. “People who might have a backyard garden, they’re probably going to have a pond and maybe native plants. Stingless bees are very compatible with that. If it’s a food garden with chooks and worm farms and vegie gardens, stingless bees are very compatible with that. They provide a pollination and they produce honey.” What could bee better? For more information on native bees visit australiannativebee.org.au.

5 BEE FACTS There are about 20,000 different species of bees in the world. The average European honey worker bee lives for just five to six weeks. During this time, it produces around a 12th of a teaspoon of honey. Australian researchers have proven bees understand the concept of zero and can do basic addition and subtraction. To share information about the best food sources, honey bees perform a ‘waggle dance’, moving in a figure eight and wagging their bodies to indicate the direction of the food source. As an industry, honey bee pollinators are estimated to contribute around $6 billion a year to the Australian economy.

HISTORY

NOWHERE TO GO, NOTHING TO DO Lack of entertainment was a big deal for teenagers on the Sunshine Coast during the 1970s, when there were few restaurants, even fewer live music venues and, until the drinking age was lowered to 18 in 1974, no access to nightclubs. WORDS: Dot Whittington.

I

n June 1967, a crowd of teenagers packed into the Nambour Civic Hall for the Battle of the Sounds. It had been the talk of the town for weeks. My 18-yearold brother, who only years earlier had been sporting a plastic Beatles wig, was among them, and his little sister was very jealous. Brought to Nambour by local radio station 4NA, the Hoadley’s Battle of the Sounds was a national competition. There were six bands competing in Nambour that night, and the crowd was ecstatic, dancing “until late” to rock/pop bands which had never before graced the Civic Hall stage. The Nambour group Gemini Four made it to the Queensland Country division but the national prize went to Melbourne’s The Groop, which had Brian Cadd on keyboard and vocals. But the dearth of entertainment in the region continued. In 1972, a 16-year-old girl contacted the local papers: “I am writing this in the hope that some interest might be spurred and something done about the lack of entertainment facilities on the Sunshine Coast. There is entertainment for those under 12 and over 20, but what about the so-called troublemakers, the teenagers? “This group is important to a thriving surf centre such as our widely publicised Coast. “The Gold Coast has adapted itself to this group by providing numerous discotheques and coffee houses etc and has been rewarded by increased numbers visiting and financing the area. “Apart from the meagre efforts put forward by a few church organisations, any attempts in providing entertainment sources have been negligible. Nambour, in particular, is deprived, possessing only one theatre. This means the

Mandy Jones and Steven Rowe serve coffee at The Place in Cotton Tree in January 1977. young people must go out of town for the little extra entertainment which is offered. “For example, on Friday, July 21, the dance at Palmwoods was for an exclusive group who could afford evening gowns, the skating rink was overcrowded for its comparatively small size, one theatre wasn’t operating, and another was showing an R-rated film. “I hope this single plea, backed by others, will stir some interest from local enterprises who would not only find this a profitable venture but would also provide the Sunshine Coast youth with a common, healthy form of entertainment by night as well as our beaches by day.”

celebrate our multi-million dollar redevelopment

I still have that letter, as well as the tattered typewriter copy of a speech I gave at a meeting called in 1973, to debate a proposal to establish a casino on the Sunshine Coast, basically suggesting the money would be better spent on providing entertainment for young people. The boys were also complaining. They couldn’t even go somewhere for a game of pool as it was illegal to enter a hotel; and theatres (cinemas) were few and far between. Under Gough Whitlam’s Australian Assistance Plan (AAP), the North Moreton Region Interim Council for Social Development appointed a project officer and

held a workshop on the needs of youth. The project officer, a third-year social work student from the University of Queensland, spoke to “a variety of people in the district – police, child-care officers, national fitness and social workers who are concerned about the needs of our young people”. Little came of it; the AAP was abolished in 1976, and nothing changed. The peak of the popular Cotton Tree rollerdrome had passed by the time Chifley’s Hotel opened at Alexandra Headland in December 1974. It was an instant hit. Surfair at Marcoola opened as the Coast’s first upmarket hotel and convention centre in 1971, and by mid-decade its Sunday afternoon sessions with live music was striking a chord with the local crowd. The Palmwoods Dance, usually with Ivy Garrad on the keyboard, lead singer Rex Eggmolesse and MC George Garrad plus various combinations of musicians and band names, was one of the few unlicensed venues. In 1976, the former Vogue Theatre became Maranatha Arcade with the Hack Shack fun parlour, Jaffle Inn snack bar and 500-seat cinema. There was also a Christian book and music shop and, run by the Christian Life Assembly as a family entertainment centre, it never really hit the mark for teenagers. The Place, which opened in the boxing hall at Cotton Tree at about the same time, was another community-driven effort to “get something going” for the youth of the Sunshine Coast under the banner of the Sunshine Coast Youth Action Group. By now there were trendy restaurants springing up as well, but that’s another story. And then, at the turn of the decade, the Coast grew up – or maybe it was me.

REVIEW IMAGE: VISIT SUNSHINE COAST

BUMPER RESULT FOR LATEST TOURISM FIGURES

Strong growth from New Zealand, the UK, USA, Asia and Europe has helped the Sunshine Coast produce a bumper result in the latest International Visitor Survey (IVS). Tourism Research Australia, which compiles the figures for the IVS, estimated 309,000 overseas travellers visited the Coast in the 12 months ending March 2019, an increase of 0.9 per cent. Holiday visitors grew at an even faster rate, recording 1.6 per cent growth. The surge in visitors produced record expenditure of $277.2 million, 20.5 per cent higher than the previous year. Visit Sunshine Coast CEO Simon Latchford says strategic campaigns have paid high dividends. “Achieving such positive results in the international market highlights the foresight behind the expansion of Sunshine Coast Airport, he says. “There is clearly a tourism appetite for our region, and the launch of the new runway next year will provide opportunities to attract additional services from across the Tasman and, in the longer-term, from Asia as the Sunshine Coast builds its profile in these markets. Mr Latchford says next month, the region will welcome the return of seasonal international flights from Auckland and once the new runway is in place, the Coast should attract permanent services from Auckland and other major centres across New Zealand.

$10,000 The region’s best and brightest young people brought their innovative ideas to life with a truly impressive display of talent, creativity and ideas at the Mayor’s Telstra Innovation Awards. The all-girl team RoboGems from Chancellor State College took out the top prize with Parki-bit, a wearable device aimed at assisting sufferers of Parkinson’s disease. Jasmin Harrison from Saint Andrew’s Anglican College’s team StudyVerse was awarded the 2019 Outstanding Female Entrepreneur for the region. These outstanding students will share in $10,000 worth of technology prizes and receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Sydney where they will tour the Telstra Experience Centre to receive further mentoring from senior Telstra technology leaders and visit a start-up incubator. The SafeTick team from Saint Andrew’s Anglican College won the Telstra In-Store People’s Choice Award.

SUNSHINE COAST COUNCIL DELIVERS BUDGET Sunshine Coast Council has endorsed its $864-million budget for 2018-19. Mayor Mark Jamieson says this year’s budget demonstrates a continuing commitment to enhancing the natural environment, supporting and servicing the community and building an economy that can provide jobs now and into the future. “Each year for the past six years, we have delivered a budget surplus and this year will be no different, Mayor Jamieson says. Budget highlights include $123 million to maintain, renew and replace roads, pathways and stormwater assets, $33 million for the environment, including beaches, foreshores, bushland conservation and clean energy, $77 million for recreation, including maintaining and upgrading the council’s many parks and gardens, sporting facilities and lifeguard services, $44 million for libraries, galleries and community facilities and services, $32 million for economic initiatives, including local business support, major events and holiday parks and $7 million for community events and grants. Mayor Jamieson says a record $370 million has been allocated to the capital works program, which is the largest in the history of this council. “Our capital works program goes to the very heart of the liveability and connectivity of our community, he says. “The budget includes $151 million for the Sunshine Coast Airport Expansion project which remains on track for completion by Christmas 2020. Council has also allocated $33 million for works at the Maroochydore City Centre for streets, cycleways and footpaths; installation of street lighting and street furniture; construction of a new park and landscaping; and the first stage of a striking new waterway on the site.

PROFILE – they’ve had to lose a lot along the way, with me not being there for important events because my work has taken me away.” The Telstra award is the latest in a string of awards Assistant Commissioner Platz has received, including International Female Officer of the Year 2016 from the International Association of Women and Police. She says she had planned to turn down the job with the AFP if it was offered to her. “I never envisaged actually leaving Queensland. It was a really hard decision. I had done 30 years in Queensland and had a trusted network of family and friends. “But when I started talking to the Commissioner of the AFP and he told me about the type of work I’d be doing, I accepted. It involved a lot of the things I’m really interested in – I have a big history in Queensland of working in child exploitation units.” While disturbing statistics about child exploitation regularly pop up in our news feeds, Assistant Commissioner knows the sad reality behind those statistics. She says the AFP received around 19,000 reports of child exploitation in 2018 alone. “The statistics are horrible to say the least, with the amount of Australians who are watching online sexual abuse and torture of children,” she says. “Just as you would order a meal online, Australians can look up a menu, see what they want to watch, what age and gender of the child they want this abuse to happen to, when they want to see it and how they want to see it. They can watch the rape of a young child for about $40. It’s horrendous but that’s what a lot of Australians are doing on a Friday night. “Predominantly the children are being abused offshore and they live stream it, so it

makes it harder for us. We might catch one person and they might be responsible for abusing 30 or 40 children. “Every day we get reports, mainly from overseas, of Australian IP addresses that are downloading child exploitation material. Each of those files could contain one image or a file of 100,000 images. They say on average each paedophile, if we were to take their computers, would have 168,000 files of child exploitation.” Assistant Commissioner Platz has seen the worst of these videos and has staff members whose role it is to “do nothing all day every day but sit and watch these videos”. To help with the psychological trauma they endure, these officers go through a program of graduated exposure so they don’t see the worst videos straight away. “We have the teams assessed every year to make sure they’re coping,” she says. “We wrap around people. It’s not always the worst ones that stay in your memory. For me, there are only a couple I have a really vivid memory of. There’s a street on the Sunshine Coast I will never drive down. I don’t want to remember what I saw of what happened to that child.” Assistant Commissioner Platz says while she is a resilient person, the way she copes is to continue focusing on the next child or the next case, rather than dwelling on the past. “I think back to why I joined policing in the first place. I wanted to make a difference and wanted to help the community – even if I can help save one child, that’s something.”

“There’s a street … I will never drive down. I don’t want to remember what I saw”

Line of duty The Sunshine Coast’s own Debbie Platz is one of the nation’s most senior police officers, working tirelessly against the world’s worst criminals. She spoke to My Weekly Preview about her work and her latest award. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

ebbie Platz is softly spoken, calm and composed. Her voice is not that of a toughened, battle-weary police officer who has seen the worst of humanity. Her words are measured but her spirit is kind, generous and full of conviction that her work is making a difference in the world. The University of the Sunshine Coast alumnus recently won the Public Sector and Academia Award at the 2019 Telstra Australian Business Women’s Awards for her work fighting crimes such as cyber attacks, people smuggling, and child exploitation.

After more than 30 years with the Queensland Police Service (QPS), including 18 years on the Sunshine Coast, she accepted the role of Assistant Commissioner with the Australian Federal Police (AFP) in 2017 and has been commuting back and forth between Canberra and her home in Mooloolaba. The award is a much-deserved acknowledgement. “It was lovely and I was very proud and honoured,” she says. “I was lucky to have my husband and three children there and it was one of the first times I’ve seen my husband cry. It was nice recognition not just for me, but my family and friends

This family farm hosts visits from southeast Queensland’s best chefs, who then return to their restaurants and create menus based on what they have experienced. “I think that’s where restaurants are going; they want to make the move to being able to ‘grow with the grower’. We also want to learn from them,” The Falls Farm’s Christine Ballinger says. Plant-based eating is growing globally and this 24-acre Mapleton farm produces a wide array of vegetables, fruit and herbs. As part of The Curated Plate’s Destination Series in August, guests can spend a day at the farm to enjoy the extensive market and herb gardens, orchards and a tasting of the organic produce. its vibrant produce, we celebrate the relationship between chef and producer, a factor becoming more important as people search for authenticity. People have become more adventurous as food culture has become part of our daily lifestyle. The rise of dedicated food programming on television, social media and growing food tourism means that we are constantly influenced and inspired by colourful and diverse food opportunities.

The Culinary Collective is a series of events held in popular Sunshine Coast restaurants, bars and breweries, which will see local chefs collaborate with feature chefs from The Curated Plate’s festival program to create one-off menus and unique experiences. Chase Kojima (pictured) of Sydney’s Sokyo joins the Spice Bar kitchen to create this one-off seafood extravaganza, proudly supported by Mooloolaba based Walker Seafoods, Australia’s largest wild-caught tuna and swordfish company. The Curated Plate encourages guests to immerse themselves in the flavours foraged from organic and sustainable practices and enjoy once-in-a-lifetime dining experiences. Bookings are essential. RATES RETHINK

T

he Australian stock market has outperformed its developed market counterparts in 2019 so far. It may well continue to do so. We have recently raised our forecast for cuts to the official cash rate of the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) to an additional 50 basis points (bp) of easing in 2020. This further easing is on top of the widely expected 25bp cut delivered at the bank’s June meeting and would leave the benchmark interest rate at 0.5 per cent by the middle of calendar 2020. At the local level, these changes largely reflect explicit recognition by RBA governor Philip Lowe that an unemployment rate below five per cent can be sustained and, in fact, needs to be actively pursued to hit the central bank’s inflation target band of two to three per cent.

NAB BANKS ON TECH A broad rule of thumb is that an easing of 50bp should reduce the unemployment rate by 0.15 percentage points over the subsequent 12 to 18 months. Assuming a starting level of 5.2 per cent for the unemployment rate, our previous estimate of 50bp of easing were inadequate to deliver the macroeconomic outcomes necessary to achieve a pick-up in inflation, hence our forecast revisions. It is worth highlighting here that so far global trade ructions have not threatened the Federal Government’s coffers. This is because a surge in key commodity prices, and iron ore in particular, has driven the value of our exports higher even as export volumes have drifted lower, at least partly in response to tariffs. The strong trade performance means the first stage of fiscal

policy easing – the low- and middle-income tax offsets – is still in train and likely to be passed into law soon. This boost to household income will underpin secondhalf GDP growth, with most of the benefit coming in the December quarter. Within equities, defensive sectors, such as health care, and yield stocks are the focus. Yield stocks are likely to remain relatively attractive given expected interest rate cuts from the RBA and the possibility of easier monetary policy by the US Fed if trade tensions persist. National Australia Bank is allocating $2 billion to boost high-growth tech companies over the next five years. The lender said the pledge – which is in addition to its existing NAB Ventures seed funding program – will provide tech innovators with ongoing financial support via loans, advice and assistance with capital raising. NAB’s chief customer officer business and private banking Andrew Healy says companies the bank is targeting are often already profitable, but may need further capital and banking expertise to become the ASX100 players of tomorrow. He added the pledge is a direct response to the economic challenges identified this week by the Australian National Outlook 2019, a collaboration with CSIRO, NAB and 20 other non-government organisations. The report recommended five key shifts that Australia should make to secure a prosperous future, including innovation and investment in growth –AAP sectors such as technology.

MY OPINION

VIOLET CRUMBLE VS CRUNCHIE

THERE’S A GOOD DUCK

Sami Muirhead sparked a furore across the Coast when she dared suggest the rival honeycomb chocolate bars are equally delicious.

Richard O’Leary says dogs have special powers that can make you bend to their will, which may explain the rising popularity of more unusual pets.

W

hat has been the best part of my week? Realising we Coasties are a little bit bonkers when it comes to the debate over which is better: the Violet Crumble or the Crunchie chocolate bar. I naively thought they kind of tasted the same and were both delicious golden honeycomb goodness. How wrong was I and how stupid was I to vocalise my thoughts? I have never received so much hate mail in my life after I said on radio the two products taste pretty much the same. And let me tell you, Violet Crumble fans are way more kooky and hardcore than Crunchie fans! One friend who is a VC stalwart accused me of likening Passion Pop to Veuve champagne. Another friend labelled me: “A total idiot who has clearly burnt off all her tastebuds in recent years by drinking too much cheap wine.” The Violet Crumble was returned to Australian ownership last year and is being sold in a bag format (big squares inside the bag) after nine years in the wilderness. Most supermarkets on the Coast have sold out of the reintroduced bag format, with VC fans stocking up. It truly must be the way it shatters that matters. Violet Crumble lovers have rejoiced nationwide and I am starting to think the honeycomb is laced with something more addictive than sugar, the way it sparks loyalty and fever with connoisseurs of the

crumble, who claim the honeycomb is thicker if you look at a cross section of the surface. Yes, my life has been reduced to comparing cross sections of honeycomb bars! Both sides of the debate seemed to agree the Crunchie has thicker chocolate and more holes in the actual honeycomb. While you are digesting those amazing facts, let me share with you the other big food bombshell rocking my first world. Cob loaf. A christening or Christmas was not a proper celebration for many decades growing up and all the way into my twenties without a good dip nestled warmly inside a cob loaf. We could not get enough of that French onion soup and spinach combination drizzled over thick white bread. Cob loaves have been a regular on Aussies party menus for over 100 years, but social media is erupting with fancy cob recipes, including butter chicken cob loaf and even hot chocolate mousse cob loaf. But the one that has me dreaming of carb loading on the couch tonight is the cover of the current Taste magazine. There she sits with all her curves and bumps in resplendent glory, filled with slow-cooked sticky maple pork with pork crackling dippers and a bacon waffle. If that does not make your clan go crazy, then you need to take a good hard long look at yourself and your family values. We just need the timeless jelly tip iceblock to return and my life is pretty much complete.

I

knew it. Sure I had just read it in The New York Times, but it was just confirming what I already knew deep down – dogs really do have superpowers to bend you to their will. You know that look that dogs give you to get what they want? The slightly raised eyebrow – a combination of pleading and pet-applied pressure. The look that makes you give your dog a treat despite the vet calling him a bit tubby, and the fact he has

“You know that look that dogs give you to get what they want?” just eaten a few minutes earlier. Scientists can’t tell you exactly what a dog means by that look but they have given it a name – AU101: inner eyebrow raise. Or as I like to call it, human manipulation 101. It all comes down to dogs having a muscle called the levator anguli oculi medialis – which with one flex melts the hardest hearts and leads humans to unconsciously select those animals to breed in favour of dogs who have more deadpan expressions. Tellingly, wolves don’t have this muscle and have been left to wander the wilds to fend for themselves.

Originally, the study looked at horses and cats. Horses had some limited ability to replicate the facial movements of dogs, while cats don’t need such primitive permutations to express themselves – they just do what the hell they want, when they want to do it. Or as it says in my son’s book The Funny Life of Pets the difference between dogs and cats can be summarised easily: • If you don’t feed a dog, it will follow you around telling you that it loves you. If you don’t feed a cat it will just go somewhere else. • Dogs can do jobs. Cats either can’t do jobs or can’t be bothered. • If you tickle a dog’s tummy it will love it. If you tickle a cat’s tummy terrible things will happen. But both species seem to get what they want. Dogs who expertly flaunt the AU101: inner eyebrow raise have a much better strike rate of being adopted from the local pound, while cats have no such concerns. In my experience you don’t choose a cat, it chooses you. This apparent manipulation may help explain why many people are turning away from cats and dogs as emotional support animals. In just eight years, one American company that certifies a range of emotional support animals – everything from ducks to alligators and insects – has seen an increase from 2400 to 200,000 animals. Now that’s sure to raise a levator anguli oculi medialis, or two.

READER’S CORNER THE GO-AWAY BIRD Author: Julia Donaldson and Catherine Rayner Publisher: Pan Macmillan RRP: $24.99 Reviewer: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane The stunning illustrations of Catherine Rayner bring the tale of the Go-Away Bird to life. Settled in her tree, one by one other birds fly in, wanting to play, eat, sing or dance together. However, the Go-Away bird sends them on their way with a less-thanpolite rebuke. But when the dangerous Get-You bird comes along, she realises the importance of having friends who can back you up. In true Julia Donaldson form, this is a delightful rhyming tale that will captivate children of all ages and makes for a great family bedtime story these school holidays. My daughter was particularly thrilled to learn that a Go-Away bird actually does exist, although the real-life versions are much more sociable.

TRAVEL

DID YO

THE WONDER OF WHALES UP CLOSE Whale watching is an unforgettable experience you can have right here on the Coast. WORDS: Candice Holznagel.

A

s an avid traveller, I have had the opportunity to visit some of the world’s most beautiful locations. Snorkelling the aqua-blue waters of Fiji’s Coral Coast, boating in France’s breathtaking Lake Annecy, swimming in the crystal-clear water of Thailand’s islands. Yet, I can confidently say the Sunshine Coast is up there with the best. Clean beaches, a green environment, a healthy ocean and amazing experiences – what more could we ask for? Earlier this month I had the opportunity to take in the beauty from a different perspective – 12 miles offshore to be exact. Needless to say, the experience made me fall in love with our region even more. It was a sunny Wednesday morning when my mum, my five-year-old son and I drove into the recently refurbished The Wharf Mooloolaba. Armed with our cameras, and full of excited anticipation, we joined the line outside the Sunreef building.

Standing before us was the majestic and newly renovated glossy-black catamaran, aptly named Whale One. The boat was to be our base for the next few hours as we joined other hopeful whale watchers – and an entertaining and knowledgeable crew – in search of the annual humpback migration. The whales are on their northern migration following their summer of feeding in Antarctic waters. They travel up to 5000 kilometres with many stopping in the Hervey Bay district to mate and give birth, before moving south back through our waters from September to November. Thankfully, these charismatic creatures are now protected following needless culling of close to 85,000 humpbacks between the late 1940s and 1962. The International Whaling Commission banned humpback whaling the following year, but it’s estimated that the east-coast population had dwindled to as little as 100. Thankfully, environmental sanctions have resulted in the population

recovering substantially. The 2019 migration will be one of the biggest yet. It is believed that around 20,000 whales now travel our waters. On our day at sea we were lucky enough to see not one, but three, curious calves. Cautious at first, the large babies slowly worked their way towards their human spectators, perhaps encouraged by the squeals of delight. Even the seasoned crew were celebrating the beauty before us. Whale watching boats must adhere to specific rules and regulations, so you can rest assured that your viewing experience won’t hinder these loveable creatures. As the catamaran stood still for 45 minutes, we watched the playful whales in their element. Breaching and swimming under the catamaran, any hesitation that the calves originally felt quickly dissipated. Baby humpbacks weigh in at about 20,000 kilograms and measure up to four metres in length. They are a sight to behold. It was an experience we will remember for a lifetime.

Prices for Whale One start at $55 for a child. Adults pay $75. The swim tour costs $165 per person. Bookings are essential. Visit whaleone.com.au. What you need to take The cruise boat is covered and provides plenty of shaded seating. However, it’s still a good idea to wear sunscreen. Food and drinks are available for purchase on board. And, don’t forget to take your camera. Tip Even on the calmest days at sea, the motion can cause sickness. Sunshine Coast residents ents and visitors will be on top of the world, with Australia’s tallest travelling, portable observation ferris wheel now in Caloundra. The giant Skyline wheel provides a bird’s eye view across the hinterland mountains, the

whale watching tours. John Matterson has owned and operated 17 charter vessels during his 30-year love of the ocean, from the small town of Tathra on the far south coast of New South Wales, through to the vibrant diversity of Sydney Harbour and now the tranquil and serene waters off Mooloolaba, which he now calls home. Allow John and his crew to instil this passion for the ocean and the majestic humpbacks as he embarks on his next adventure with you. Brisbane Road, Mooloolaba elitesailing.com.au.

sparkling sea and vibrant towns from its 35-metre-high peak. With 24 gondolas seating up to 144 people, including a wheelchair accessible gondola, all are welcome. Each ride lasts for about six to eight minutes. The Xtra Ordinary Events’ ferris wheel moves to several different locations throughout Australia each year and the warmer winter climate on the Coast was a great incentive to be located in Caloundra these school holidays. The wheel is located in the Bulcock Beach car park on The Esplanade in Caloundra until July 21. Free parking is available at the Cooma Terrace Parking Station, 400 metres away. Experience what it feels like to sit in the pilot’s seat of 20 historic aircraft at the Queensland Air Museum’s next Open Cockpit Weekend on July 6 and 7. The Open Cockpit Weekend will combine history and modern technology with a virtual reality and flight controller display by Joyce Mayne. Take to the skies with VR and then learn more about the history of the aircraft featured in Australia’s largest aircraft display. The remarkable team of QAM volunteers continue to restore the historically significant aircraft on display and maintain them for the visiting public to enjoy and appreciate. Guides will be on hand throughout the weekend to share their tales. With a combined hundreds of thousands of hours in the air, the volunteers have experiences from the basic Tiger Moth

crop-duster to the most extreme military aircraft and modern passenger aircraft and their stories will keep you enthralled for hours. Don’t despair if you can’t make it to the weekend, the QAM is open throughout the school holidays, with experienced tour guides on-site every Monday and Wednesday to show visitors around. Pathfinder Drive, Caloundra qam.com.au.

VIRGO (AUG 24-SEP 23)

LIBRA (SEP 24-OCT 23)

SCORPIO (OCT 24-NOV 22)

Expect a disappointment as you discover you’ve over-committed time, energy and enthusiasm to a project (or relationship) that’s going nowhere. Pick yourself up and re-formulate your goals, as the solar eclipse activates your hopes and wishes zone.

Being a languid and laid-back Libran won’t suffice as the solar eclipse pushes you to be your personal best and explore fresh horizons. Venus sends a lucky career break your way or blesses a relationship with a student, colleague or client.

It’s a wonderful week to travel, read, research or study as the solar eclipse boosts your brain power. Mars and Venus move into your career and aspiration zones respectively, so make sure you capitalise on the energy boost and good fortune.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV 23-DEC 21)

CAPRICORN (DEC 22-JAN 20)

AQUARIUS (JAN 21-FEB 19)

PISCES (FEB 20-MAR 20)

You can look forward to a fresh start involving lust or loot as the solar eclipse stimulates your intimacy and joint finances zone. But your usual confidence could take a temporary dive, as someone brings up an embarrassing incident from the past.

The solar eclipse urges you to nurture family and friends with the time and attention they deserve. If you’re having ongoing problems with a loved one, let go of the past and be proactive about finding a solution.

You’re keen to rush things (especially relationships), but don’t barge in with guns blazing! The solar eclipse urges you to focus on practical matters and finish details properly before you embark on new projects, so it’s a suitable time to tackle domestic chores.

Tuesday’s solar eclipse prompts you to pursue a creative idea, do something romantic with your partner or fall in love! However, if you’re involved with a club or organisation, expect power plays or personality clashes later in the week.

SUNNY OUTLOOK

Our property market remains affordable and is looking healthy.

T

he latest Queensland Market Monitor released by the REIQ has shown that despite a nationwide trough, the property market in Queensland remains affordable and continues to show signs of sustainable growth when compared to its southern counterparts. The report lists the Sunshine Coast unit and house markets as “steady” with the Sunshine Coast Local Government Area (LGA), which excludes the Noosa market, delivering 3.5 per cent growth – the secondhighest annual growth in the state. The annual median house price on the Coast is $585,000 and is almost 30 per cent above levels five years ago. “Generally speaking, the Queensland markets are doing as well as can be expected, proving somewhat resilient to the economic headwinds facing the nation,” REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella says. “Under these circumstances we would implore the State Government to reconsider its position on broadening the first homeowners’ grant to include established homes in regional Queensland. A boost for buyers in this market, where homes are verging on oversupply, would be beneficial to changing the falling trendline.” The Coast LGA came in second behind

Noosa, which was the standout growth market of Queensland for the past 12 months. Noosa continues to hold the title of most expensive house market in the state, growing 8.7 per cent to a median house price of $750,000. While the annual growth figure remains strong, the March quarter is the second consecutive quarter of contracting price in the Noosa local government area (LGA), with a fall of 4.7 per cent in the March quarter. Noosa and the Sunshine Coast unit markets have also appeared to outshine the majority of markets analysed in the QMM. The report shows vacancies across the Coast softened over the March quarter and have begun to shift from a tight to healthy status. Subsequently, annual median rents in the region have remained unchanged for the March quarter indicating a fall in demand for some rental properties with the exception of Noosa which posted four per cent rental growth and saw vacancies remain tight. The driver for strong rental performance in the area is an increase in owner-occupiers, limiting the rental stock and in turn putting pressure on rents.

What is a median house price The REIQ calculates the median house price by using the value of the home in the middle of a sample. For example, because there were 785 houses sold on the Coast in the last quarter, when they are listed from cheapest to most expensive, the median ($585,000 in this case) is the value property number 393 was sold for.

SUNSHINE COAST YEAR ON YEAR 4087 house sales, median sale price of $585,000, 3.5 per cent growth. 2810 units and townhouses sold, median sale price of $415,000, no growth. 1043 vacant land sales, median price of $265,000, 3.9 per cent growth.

TENANT INTEREST ON THE RISE IN NEW MAROOCHYDORE CBD

T

enant interest in the new Maroochydore CBD is rising with work on the construction of the first commercial building poised

to start. SunCentral commercial property consultant Jerry O’Reilly says commercial confidence is already high on the Sunshine Coast and the new Maroochydore city centre is meeting a growing demand for contemporary infrastructure and state-ofthe art technology. Mr O’Reilly, a stalwart of the Sunshine Coast commercial property sector, says interest in the region has lifted in recent years but the new CBD has raised it to a new level. “The Sunshine Coast is one of the largest regional economies in Australia with an annual growth rate that is more than one per cent higher than the national average,” he says. Mr O’Reilly says the CBD has been built with smart city infrastructure and cuttingedge urban design to ensure tenants can confidently grow their businesses into the future. “We are receiving inquiries from businesses that are seeking to expand their

operations and take advantage of the positive growth which is taking place on the Sunshine Coast,” he says. “Because the new city centre is being built on a former golf course, there is no legacy infrastructure to remove or replace. It has been created with the most advanced telecommunications and data

infrastructure available. “We are negotiating with a wide array of companies from the finance, legal, hospitality, medical, education, technology and residential sectors, all of which are increasingly reliant on efficient, state-of-the art connectivity to thrive in a digital future.” Mr O’Reilly says the new international subsea cable, which will be operational in 2020 and will land at the eastern edge of the new CBD on Maud Street, will provide business with Australia’s fastest data connection to Asia from the east coast. Sunshine Coast developer Evans Long has been the first to identify the opportunities of the new CBD with construction to start soon on its eight-story Foundation Place office building. FINAL WORD “The new subsea cable will be operational in 2020”

Ms Quinn has expertise in residential, commercial and retail markets and was most recently chief executive officer of Retire Australia, the largest private operator, developer and manager of seniors’ housing in the country. Ms Quinn has also served on a number of boards including the Property Council of Australia and the Urban Development Institute of Australia.

Former Australian rugby union player and commercial real estate agent with more than 30 years’ experience, Paul McLean, was chief executive of Savills Australia from 2006 – 2016. SURF REPORT

with MWP’s man in the water

By the time you read this, I will be back from scoring waves in Indo. I surfed some new places, which were quite special. I believe there is a huge swell to hit this weekend up there. Snap… back to the Coast and cold. Not sure what the report looks like, but don’t really care either. I’ll bask in my memories of hot Indo waves for a few weeks. Later peeps.
