FROM THE EDITOR

A

few nights ago, I had the opportunity to sit on the beach and, as always, my gaze was immediately drawn to the evening sky. We were in luck as it was a crystalclear night. The stars were actually twinkling and the moon cast a beautiful shadow. I’ve always had a real fascination for the universe and space travel. I’m in awe of how far we have come since humans first stepped foot on the moon all those years ago. As you read this, there are actually three humans working in space. Two Americans and a Russian just floating around in the International Space Station. Can you imagine? One person who doesn’t need to imagine is celebrated astronaut Buzz Aldrin, the second man to step foot on the moon. As the world commemorated the 50th anniversary of the moon landing on Sunday, we were lucky enough to secure a few words from Buzz, which we share this week. You can read his first-hand account in our cover story on page 12. We also take a look at the various plans to not only reach, but colonise, Mars into the not-so-distant future. For those of us not lucky enough to land a job in NASA’s space program, there is a different program launching locally that we are pretty excited about. Sunshine Coast Council has joined forces with local businesses, including My Weekly Preview, to offer the B-Well and Prosper platform to boost mental health in small businesses. You can find out more about this great initiative on page 18.

Ever wondered what those grooves in the bottom of your freezer shelf are for? They can be used to stack meat trays vertically to create more room.

In 2000, Australian film The Dish educated thousands around the world about the role of the Parkes Observatory in relaying a live television feed of man’s first steps on the moon. However, what many people don’t realise is that, while the film got many aspects of the moon landing correct, the writers did use creative licence. It was actually the NASA Honeysuckle Creek Tracking Station, located on the outskirts of Canberra, which was responsible for airing the first eight minutes of the moon landing. While Parkes played a role, it was Honeysuckle that enabled the footage to be broadcast to hundreds of millions of people around the world.

THE NEXT

47 The last time humans travelled beyond lower Earth orbit was 47 years ago in December 1972. NASA’s Apollo 17 was the sixth and final manned spacecraft to land on the moon.

FRONTIER

As the world reflects on the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, we are once again setting our sights on the stars in anticipation of our return in 2024, the first time we will have taken that giant leap since the 1969 Apollo 11 mission. WORDS: Candice Holznagel.

1 Voyager 1 is the most distant man-made object from Earth. It launched almost 42 years ago and left our solar system to enter interstellar space in 2012. It still communicates with NASA daily.

87 The first known interstellar object to visit our solar system – a 400-metre long rock – was discovered in 2017. Named Oumuamua, it travels at about 87.3 kilometres per second and provides an insight into how other solar systems are formed.

500K There are more than 500,000 pieces of space junk tracked as they orbit Earth and millions more that can’t be tracked. Even a fleck of paint can damage a spacecraft due to the speed of travel.

“I

t suddenly struck me that that tiny pea, pretty and blue, was the Earth. I put up my thumb and shut one eye, and my thumb blotted out the planet Earth. I didn’t feel like a giant. I felt very, very small.” This week marked 50 years since Neil Armstrong stepped foot on the moon, and it’s fair to say that we have come a long way in that time. It took 400,000 people to put Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the moon in 1969. It’s also said that the computers on board the Apollo 11 spacecraft contained less power and technology than the smartphone that you hold in your hand today. And yet, as NASA prepares to return to the moon by 2024, it’s worth noting that some of the technologies used all those years ago are still relied on today. Now, NASA is investing billions into new technology that will see humans visit the moon for the first time since the maiden mission, which captured global attention. There will be one notable difference on this visit – the astronauts won’t be coming home for some time. NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine recently spoke out about the Moon to Mars exploration project. “President Donald Trump has asked NASA to accelerate our plans to return to the moon and to land humans on the surface again by 2024,’’ Mr Bridenstine said in a statement in June. “We will go with innovative new technologies and systems to explore more locations across the surface than was ever thought possible. This time, when we go to the moon, we will stay. And then we will use what we learn on the moon to take the next giant leap – sending astronauts to Mars.” It is hoped that the mission will reveal further understanding of exploration, scientific discoveries and insight into how humans could live sustainably on another

planet. Essentially, the complex plan to establish a sustainable human presence on the moon by 2028 is a test bed for building a community on Mars. But, first things first. NASA plans to launch the research Mars Rover next year to address “high-priority science goals for Mars exploration, including key questions about the potential for life on Mars.” It will be a challenge, with hopes of landing the rover in the 45-kilometre wide Jezero Crater. As for the moon, the human Artemis mission will begin in earnest later next year when the first commercial deliveries are launched. Scientific and technology instruments, as well as the Gateway spaceship, which will support the human missions to the surface, will be delivered. The first space launch tests will kick off in 2022, building towards the 2024 goal. Among the team will be the first female astronaut to visit the moon. The eventual 2028 milestone will be the first time humans spend a substantial amount of time exploring vast regions of the surface. In comparison, the 12 Apollo astronauts who previously reached the moon have a combined total of 80 hours on its surface. It will then be at least another two years before NASA tackles Mars. In the meantime, private enterprise is forging ahead with billionaire and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk aiming to establish the first base on the red planet in 2028. He has famously stated that humans will be living in a Mars city by 2050. In addition, the United Arab Emirates has plans to establish a 600,000-people strong city on the foreign planet by 2117. Funded by the UAE, with support from NASA, the Hope Mars Mission will launch in 2020 and reach Mars the following year. There are plans to construct a complex of buildings called the continued> myweeklypreview.com.au

Mars Scientific City, which will comprise laboratories for food, agricultural testing, energy and water. Australia is also taking steps in seeking out opportunities within the space industry. This week, AAP reported Australia set up its own space agency in Adelaide 12 months ago and is keen to work with NASA for opportunities to be involved in its Artemis program. “That doesn’t necessarily mean that we will be sending an astronaut to the moon or to Mars but it doesn’t exclude it either,” Australia’s Industry Minister Karen Andrews said. “We are part of the space race, we want a bigger part.” Australia’s space agency works with industry and researchers to maximise opportunities for the country, AAP reports. In addition to his moon to Mars plan, US President Trump has also flagged a ‘space force’ aimed at a space warfare, but Ms Andrews said she has not be involved in any discussions in relation to that.

BUZZ ALDRIN As the Western world stopped on Sunday to remember the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, Apollo 11 astronaut and lunar module pilot Edwin ‘Buzz’ Aldrin shared his thoughts with My Weekly Preview about the history-making mission. July 16, 1969, the launch date. Tell us about it. Launch was almost imperceptibly smooth through the early abort modes, and nothing unexpected happened. We knew we were accelerating, but the launch was so smooth compared to Gemini launches that we did not know the instant of leaving the ground. We only knew it from the instruments and voice communications which confirmed lift-off. We saw our rate of climb, altitude changing, but were comfortable in our seats. We looked at each other and thought, ‘We must be on our way. What’s next?’

associated with splashdown. Coming down, we had to wait until we hit the water, and you are not quite sure what altitude you are at. On splashdown, we had to throw a switch to release the parachutes, only it was a bit bumpy, so we tipped over before we could release the parachutes. The balloons tipped us right side up again. It was good to be back, eventually to see and talk with family. When we arrived on the carrier deck, we were placed in a containment trailer and it had a window. When they played the national anthem, we wanted to stand.

How was the moon landing? As for being on the moon, well, getting down was interesting. As we approached, we levelled off and kept moving down and forward to land. We knew we were continuing to burn fuel… then we heard 30 seconds left. If we ran out of fuel, we knew it would be a hard landing!

On reflection how do you feel? The Apollo 11 mission was many things to many people. To me, it was the dream we had all signed up to chase, what we had imagined, worked and trained for. The apex of national service to a country we unabashedly loved. The height of aviation and exploration. Hundreds of millions saw their own reflection in our visors, efforts, risk with purpose, doing what had not been done before. Even now, we say: If America put men on the moon, what can’t we do? And that sentiment is right. We did then – and we can do now – whatever we put our combined minds to. So, Apollo 11 was a dream-come-true for all of us. A launch so smooth we had to look at dials to confirm we were off – an extraordinary journey made possible by tens of thousands of extraordinary patriots; a bit of excitement on descent, making footprints in moon dust. It was a privilege to have been able to undertake the first manned mission to the lunar surface, an honour to have worked with so many good and dedicated people, and to have left our footprints there. Even now, sometimes, I marvel that we went to the moon. But now, I think, it is time for the next generation to buckle up, get back to the moon, and get on to a permanent presence on Mars.

We saw the shadow in front of us. That was new, not something we saw in the simulator. The light turns on. Neil remembers we shook hands, and I recall putting my hand on his shoulder. We smiled.

How did it feel to exit on to the moon? Once down, we climbed down the ladder and out. As Neil descended… he announced, “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”. I then got in position to come down. When I got off and looked around, and it was easy to balance, I said ‘magnificent desolation’. It was magnificent desolation. I think Neil remarked on the beauty too. Tell us about your return to Earth. Well, we would later relax in confinement, but at the time I focused on a procedure

AGENDA

WORKING ON A HAPPY, HEALTHY FUTURE The council has teamed up with mental health expert Aaron Williams to help the region’s businesses and employees. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

Aaron Williams

S

he’ll be right mate. It’s Australia’s go-to phrase and represents the relaxed Aussie way of life. But all too often, the phrase is used as a way to mask problems we’d rather not deal with, especially workplace stress. No one wants to be seen as the weak link in the chain, the one who lets the team down, who isn’t on top of things. To enhance workplace wellbeing on the Sunshine Coast, the Sunshine Coast Council will launch its B-Well and Prosper program on Tuesday July 23, specifically for small business and its employees. In creating the content for the B-Well & Prosper website, the council worked with Aaron Williams, founder of Mindstar, an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) provider that offers online coaching and psychological support to a number of companies including ANZ, Zurich Australia and the Men of League

Foundation. Mr Williams has lived in Verrierdale for more than a decade and acknowledges we live in paradise, yet we appear to be more stressed than ever. “This is something that’s been close to my heart for many years,” he says. Smaller business owners often don’t have the budget to invest in stress, wellbeing and mental health support for themselves or their employees and can feel like they are doing it all on their own. Council recognised this and wanted to make sure small businesses had access to relevant resources. “We partnered from the beginning and came up with a concept together around how we would use technology and video content and create a portal. “The vision was to make the Sunshine Coast the healthiest business community in Australia,” Mr Williams says. “People who work in small business experience high levels of depression, stress and anxiety. They have barriers to seeking support. They might take time off because of mental health or go to work in spite of it, which leads to absenteeism and presenteeism. People who work in small business don’t have an HR department.” When asked what people could do right now to ease the stress and overwhelm in their lives, Mr Williams advises: “Stop using your mobile phone as an alarm clock. People are lying in bed and the moment they switch off their alarm they’re already in the office by checking their email. Then it’s about gratitude – being grateful for what we have; we live in paradise. The third is reminding yourself you have a beautiful life. If you feel you don’t have a beautiful life, you need to find out what you

“There are so many known benefits from taking responsibility for employees’ wellbeing”

can do to create one.” Sunshine Coast Council is partnering with Mindstar, Youi, Unitywater, Telstra, ComLink, 92.7 MixFM, Seven News, Sunshine Plaza and My Weekly Preview to deliver the online portal that will help business owners and employees to establish healthier workplaces, address cash-flow stress and identify signs of employee burnout. “The nature of work has changed so much,” says Mr Williams. “We spend so much of our time at work. From an employer’s perspective, there are so many known business opportunities and benefits from taking responsibility for employees’ wellbeing. It helps them retain their best people. They can become an employer of choice and the biggest advantage is productivity. “We live in an increasingly stressed and busy world. Every single one of us in today’s world is dealing with stuff day in, day out. Relationship stress, financial stress, being a

parent, having ageing parents. If employers can help their employees deal with that stuff, it’s going to result in a happier, more productive workplace.” Mr Williams hopes the B-Well & Prosper program will help open conversations around mental health and wellbeing in the workplace. “It’s really smashing the stigma around this stuff,” he says. “It’s about helping every single person be their best, every single day. “We looked around and couldn’t find anything like this that was really designed for small business and made available free. Being supported by major organisations is a real indication of the need they see in the region. It is a world-leading program.”

FEARLESS HOSTS FIRST NATIONAL CONFERENCE FearLess, the subsidiary of PTSD Australia New Zealand, has announced the speaker line-up for its first national conference to be held on August 21 to 23 at The Events Centre in Caloundra. The line-up includes more than 30 inspiring speakers from a diverse range of backgrounds including military, law enforcement, emergency services, academic, health and not-for-profit, including NRL legend Anthony Miniciello (pictured) and Coast-based founder of Stories of HOPE Australia Kerrie Atherton. Co-founder and acting chair of FearLess Allan Behm says more than one million Australians are suffering from the “pernicious and pervasive effects” of PTSD. Tickets are available at fearlessconference.org.au/the-conference-2.

The annual Buderim Street Party is set to ignite the streets of Buderim on August 3 with music, food and fun for all. The event covers the area from the smaller roundabout in Burnett Street, down to Middys on Main Street. The Buderim Village is closed to traffic and you will find a host of stalls, two stages of street entertainment, a jumping castle and crafts, face painting and henna tattoos, as well as a huge range of food options. It is estimated that around 10,000 people will join in the festivities, hosted by volunteers from the Lions Club of Buderim and the Rotary Club of Buderim. The fun kicks off from 5.30pm. For a list of road closures, visit buderim.com/buderim-street-party.

BUDERIM GINGER A WINNING ICON Buderim Ginger was awarded the prestigious 2019 Queensland Business History Award at the Queensland Business Leaders Hall of Fame induction dinner in Brisbane. From humble beginnings in a Buderim blacksmith’s shop in 1941, Buderim Ginger won the award for its extensive historical collection and efforts to share the company’s story with the public.

A warm bed and a roof over your head can easily be taken for granted, but unfortunately for 1600 Sunshine Coast people, it’s far from reach. Local businesses have been urged to join up to the 2019 Vinnies Corporate and Community Sleepout on August 8 at Maroochydore Beach. Around 22,000 people are homeless in Queensland and the Australian Bureau of Statistics show 23.5 per cent of homeless people are under the age of 18. All money raised will go towards St Vincent de Paul, which is hoping to expand the number of affordable housing options on the Sunshine Coast and build units on a piece of land in Nambour. CLOSE TO HOME WindanSea Boardriders Club is now a big step closer to securing a dedicated clubhouse right by the beach. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

T

he WindanSea Boardriders Club has taken a huge step towards celebrating its 50th anniversary in its own clubhouse next year. In what WindanSea Boardriders president Terry Landsberg describes as an “Australianfirst concept,” the plans featuring a rustic wood and tin clubhouse were tabled before the Sunshine Coast Council. Councillors voted nine to two in favour of the Caloundra organisation securing foreshore land behind the dunes at the end of Buderim Street, Dicky Beach to build a place to call home. “This is the first time in over 80 years that foreshore land has been approved for a clubhouse for surfers or board-riding clubs, apart from surf life saving groups,” Mr Landsberg says. “The council debated it for nearly two hours as there were quite a lot of aspects to discuss.” Mr Landsberg says the club started preparing for a bid for land for a clubhouse more than seven years ago, after floating between the Outrigger Caloundra Canoe Club, the Dicky Beach Surf Club, the Currimundi Hotel and a host of private residences to host their club meetings. Former president Tim Hindley “put his hand up” to kick off the bid and has received

Artist’s impression of the WindanSea clubhouse tireless support from club members and friends of the club, who have given freely of their time and expertise to create a thorough application. Among them are former Caloundra City Council deputy mayor Don Smith and planning company RPS general manager Brad Williams. Mr Williams says he was first called upon to help in 2013 and quickly fell in love with the WindanSea community, which has more than 150 members aged between six and those in their sixties. He and his children are now

members. “A lot of people have been involved over a long period to lend their skill base to work towards an outcome that we believe in,” he says. “You don’t just get anything on the foreshore, especially State Governmentowned land, so legitimately you are required to go through a fairly rigorous process. Mr Williams says the end of Buderim Street has long been accepted as the unofficial home of WindanSea. “The clubhouse [will be] very small and is basically a club room for us to have general meetings with a small

kitchenette, office and storage facility so we don’t have to continue to bring equipment down in trailers to each event,” he says. “The structure is very lightweight and will be mounted above ground, so it is built to suit the environment and it will provide shelter when the weather gets a bit inclement as well as providing a place for members of the community to come together.” WindanSea has produced many elite surfing athletes such as Tom Curren, Wade Goodall, Eli Steele, Joel Parkinson, Ian Dimond, Peter Boyd and rising star Reef Heazlewood. WindanSea will remain communityfocused with no gaming or liquor licence and will provide a base for other clubs including Caloundra Malibu Club, Moffateers, Indigenous Surfing and Disabled Surfing. Mr Landsberg hopes the new clubhouse will be operational by Easter next year, in time for the annual Pa & Ma Bendall surfing competition.

BUSINESS & FINANCE

Justin Scattini, Ord Minnett Buderim.

SEEKING YIELD

T

he themes of falling interest rates, both locally and globally, and the (now passed) $158 billion in income tax cuts are set to be a driver of the market in the months ahead. Rate cuts tend to be stimulatory for most sectors of the market, from cyclical stocks, for example consumer discretionary, industrials, and miners, to companies with higher gearing, such as utilities, infrastructure and property trusts, which benefit from lower interest costs. More specifically, we expect to see a noticeable and sustained benefit from lower interest rates to higher yielding equities. Term deposit rates are set to stay low, driving investor preference for higheryielding assets in the search for income. Banks are likely to be sought for their yield, but we highlight that rate cuts are generally

harmful to banks in operational terms. Cuts put downward pressure on net interest margins to the extent that mortgage rates fall, interest income earned on excess capital falls, and banks are unable to lower deposit costs commensurately, particularly on non-ratesensitive (low-cost) deposits. Worth highlighting here are hybrid securities, which we have discussed at length in previous articles. They should remain supported as official interest rates continue to fall, and offer an attractive solution for yield-starved investors, particularly retirees who have traditionally relied on term deposits. As term deposit rates approach ‘floor rates’, it is likely many investors will pry their money from deposits and deploy it in the hybrids market, although hybrids have a higher risk profile. In our view, the recent rally in hybrid securities over the past month is justified. At current levels, however, we are cautious that valuations are stretched. This leads us to recommend a greater focus on security selection and capital preservation over capital appreciation. COST OF LIVING HIGHER THAN 20 YEARS AGO Cars, TVs and computer games are all cheaper than they were 20 years ago, but the cost of things Australians actually need have spiked to double and triple what they were. The cost of medical treatment and secondary school education is about triple what it was in the year 2000, while child care and housing are almost double. Meanwhile, wages have gone up just 78 per cent in those 20 years. Anthony Doyle from Fidelity International analysed Australian Bureau of Statistics data and found the true cost of living in Australia is higher than the official consumer price index figure. From 2000 to 2019, Mr Doyle found the cost of secondary education had increased 203 per cent, medical and hospital services went up 195 per cent, and housing was up 94 per cent. Insurance was up 118 per cent, pre-school and primary education went up 159 per cent,

and food and alcohol rose 62 per cent. “The inflation in these categories is far greater than both the wage growth over the same period [of] 78 per cent and the official CPI [of] 57 per cent, he says. However, cars are 14 per cent cheaper and audio-visual equipment is 89 per cent cheaper than in 2000. Clothing, footwear and furniture are all down 10 per cent, and games and hobbies are down 16 per cent. Mr Doyle says the data shows Australians who invest in the stock market or bonds may need to take on more risk. “It may not be enough for some Australian households to protect their standard of living from rising costs to own assets that generate returns in line or slightly above the official CPI, he says. “Additionally, cash no longer generates a positive real return (which accounts for inflation), and yields on Australian government bonds are at all-time lows. – AAP

PROFILE

Rethinking how we work

L

Ms Messenger encourages any business, big or small, to embrace this “mindset flip” and soar towards greater success. “Ask, ‘what’s our vision as a company and what’s our vision as individuals?’ I think it’s really important to look at both things and then overlay them and go, okay, we both want to reach these goals. “Have very honest conversations and set rigorous KPIs. Go, okay, I’m prepared to test that if you want to work one day a week from home. Okay, you work really well at six in the morning, so come in early and leave by three. It’s about testing and building trust over time. The majority of my team are now working from home and they’re just so grateful.” For small business owners contemplating changing up their workplace and helping employees become happier in their roles, Ms Messenger has this advice: “Number one is flexibility. Number two is understanding different people are motivated by different things. Some people are motivated by money. Some are motivated by bringing their pet to work or being awarded publicly. Humanise the workplace and don’t treat everyone the same. The third thing is to introduce things like meditation and yoga, simple wellness practices into the workplace that people can take part in. That develops a sense of community but also helps with mindfulness. “For many years I measured success by how many people I had in my team. Now it’s by how much freedom we all have. So far, the output has been nothing short of extraordinary.”

“Make it more about output, KPIs and productivity, rather than bums on seats”

In her new book, Work from Wherever, Lisa Messenger inspires us to pursue revolutionary new work paradigms that focus on flexibility, freedom and wellbeing. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw. isa Messenger is reimagining the future of work. She’s talking flexible hours, yoga classes, a weekday surf if the swell is good and even long stints of overseas travel – on your current salary. Anything is possible in Ms Messenger’s world, where key performance indicators (KPIs) are still important but freedom is key. The entrepreneur’s latest book, Work from Wherever, captures the spirit of the digital nomad, entrepreneur or solopreneur and

lots of staff and hefty overheads,” she says. “It was impacting my health and I felt like I was in survival mode all the time. When I started the business, everyone worked nine to five and that was the norm. But with the trends I’ve seen over the last five years, everyone wants to have a side hustle and flexibility. “What I realised is people work at different paces and people have different responsibilities. How I’ve tried to frame it is, make it more about output, KPIs and productivity, rather than bums on seats and time in office.” Ms Messenger believes companies of the future will need to embrace the ‘work from wherever’ mantra in order to retain the best talent and create happier and healthier workers. “It’s a massive mindset shift,” she says. “When I had Collective Hub, my deputy editor Amy asked me if she could go travelling for four months and continue to work on a full-time salary. I was like, are you crazy? When we sat down and worked it out on deliverables, I thought, she’s one of my best employees. She went travelling through South America for four months and did the best work I’ve ever seen. We set very specific KPIs. When she got back, she asked if she could move to Kiama. She ended up running my entire monthly magazine from 2.5 hours south of Sydney. That’s when I realised some of my best people are freelance.” Today, Ms Messenger has a new lease on life. She’s running three businesses and has never been more productive. “When I had a full-time office, the bright shiny thing always got the most attention. It was pretty inefficient. Now, as long as the work is being done, they can go to the beach, do yoga classes or watch their kids in the school play. It has become a more data-driven business.”

MY PLATE

Just like Nonna used to make Filip Gubicza has always loved gnocchi. And now the chef has turned his passion into a business, making perfect gnocchi for Sunshine Coast restaurants and consumers. WORDS: Nicole Fuge.

G

nocchi in shades of green, white and red catch my eye. It’s a subtle nod to the Italian flag and country in which this delicious dish originated. “Gnocchi is an Italian potato dumpling, traditionally made from cooked potato and flour,” Filip Gubicza says. “Making gnocchi can be a challenge if you haven’t done it before. You start with selecting the right potato, and there are over 4000 different varieties. Then it’s a process of peeling them, cooking them, mashing or pressing them, mixing in the right amount

of flour, kneading and working the dough the right way, rolling and cutting them into small pieces, then cooking them again. “Each step has to be perfectly timed, each ingredient has to be carefully measured,” he says. “It takes a lot of skill to make great gnocchi.” Born and raised in Sweden to Hungarian parents, Mr Gubicza grew up loving food and cooking. He then developed that into a career as a chef, which took him all over the world before he settled here on the Sunshine Coast. Mr Gubicza was highly sought-after

and worked in some of Noosa’s best restaurants, where he says he experienced how making gnocchi in an already busy restaurant can add a great deal of pressure to kitchen staff and resources. It was then that he came up with Handcut Deli – crafting gnocchi for busy people. “Handcut Deli became my expression for good food while creating a business for myself, and now, almost six years later, Handcut Deli has grown from a tiny sole trader to a small company, employing two people part time, and now we’re in our own production facility,” he says. Handcut Deli has a range of eight gnocchi – including potato, sweet potato, beetroot, and green pea and ricotta – seven of which are organic and vegan and three of which are gluten free. “Since we work with raw ingredients it’s not always the same from week to week. Root vegetables can change in cell structure considerably in seasons and different regions. “By using our hands as our most valuable tool, we can make sure the gnocchi is made to perfection every time. “Each potato is looked over and tended by hand before the dough is mixed, kneaded, rolled and cut. “We make sure to use the most local,

organic and best ingredients. Finally the gnocchi is blanched before it gets vacuum packed and frozen.” Mr Gubicza also makes a range of condiments to complement the gnocchi – think burnt butter and sage, and mushroom and black truffle butter. These are available at a range of shops and farmers markets for customers to cook at home, or to order at one of the local restaurants serving Mr Gubicza’s gnocchi. Handcut Deli was one of 13 local businesses participating in this year’s GrowCoastal Food Innovation Accelerator program, run in partnership with the Innovation Centre Sunshine Coast and the Food & Agribusiness Network (FAN). Applications are now open for the 2020 GrowCoastal program, subject to support from funding partners in 2020. To apply go to innovationcentre.com.au/growcoastal. IF YOU GO

Lennons Bar & Restaurant

Comfort food

in a fine dining setting When it comes to fresh produce and tastebud-pleasing fare, the Sunshine Coast is hard to beat. But, if you are in need of a city escape, then you can’t look much further than this foodie favourite. WORDS: Candice Holznagel.

I

’ve recently added a new find to my list of favourite Brisbane venues. A beautiful setting with modern fare and an unrivalled city position – it’s hard to believe that Next Hotel has been under my nose this entire time. Settled directly opposite The Myer Centre in Queen Street Mall, Next is home to the celebrated Lennons Restaurant & Bar, which pays homage to one of Brisbane’s most iconic businesses. It was in 1884 that hotelier John Lennon built the stylish three-storey Lennons Hotel on George Street, by far the most prestigious hotel in the city. In 1941, it was knocked down

to make way for a larger building. This hotel was frequented by the rich and famous, with the guest list boasting the likes of The Beatles, Sir Robert Menzies and US General Douglas MacArthur. In 1972, Brisbane Council bought the building and Lennons was built on Queen Street Mall. Today, that building houses Next Hotel, but its restaurant maintains the famous moniker. It was with this deep sense of history in mind that we settled into our warm window seats on a chilly winter’s evening. The twinkling lights of Queen Street Mall sparkled through the floor-to-ceiling

windows, adding to the restaurant’s sophisticated modern vibe. For me, dining out is about more than the food. A positive experience should serve up knowledgeable and friendly staff, atmosphere, a smart and sophisticated interior design (Lennons boasts an open-concept kitchen), a quality wine list and of course a well thought-out menu. The award-winning Lennons ticks all the boxes. Designed by head chef Coby Davis, the new winter menu features a range of classics revamped with a modern twist. We began our culinary journey with an entrée of confit duck plated with beetroot puree, pickled beetroot and beetroot meringue; and the potato gnocchi with pumpkin cream, fetta, sage and walnuts. Both dishes were stunning in presentation and in flavour, particularly when accompanied by a glass of one of the hotel’s most popular wines, the Luna rose. Our culinary feast continued as our mains were placed on the table – Lennon’s signature pork belly served with braised red cabbage, fried speck and apple cider jus, and the 330-gram wagyu scotch fillet with a Dianne sauce. Chef Davies says he wanted to create a menu that represented upmarket modern comfort food. “We try to encapsulate this familiar home-cooked feel for guests when they dine with us,’’ he adds. If only we could dine like this every night. Visit nexthotels.com/next/brisbane/dining.

WHERE TO EAT Breakfast – Felix for Goodness is a hidden gem in Burnett Lane. It offers an array of delicious treats for breakfast including danishes, frittata and a tasty carrot and sesame mini loaf with ricotta icing. Nodo in Elizabeth Street has all the usual favourites, with a healthy twist. It is known for its gluten free baked not fried donut treats. Lennons Restaurant & Bar has a $19.50 special. Choose one item off the menu and also help yourself to the extensive continental buffet of pastries, cereals, toast and cakes. Lunch – You can’t go past the coolest pool bar in the city. Open from midday on the weekends, The Pool Terrace and Bar at Next Hotel boasts terrace seating with views across the pool to the city beyond. It specialises in tapas, burgers and pizzas. Dinner – The award-winning Lennons Restaurant & Bar offers a $45 dinner special from Sunday through to Thursday. It includes a main and dessert. Or, you can enjoy the full winter menu on Friday and Saturday evenings. STAYING THERE Next Hotel Brisbane is located on Queen Street Mall and provides easy access to the city and airport. The hotel caters for travellers by offering free wifi, a 24-hour gym, pool and transit zone, which consists of showers and sleep pods. Hotel rooms range from the standard queen for $189. We opted for the Deluxe King room, which was spacious with an uber modern bathroom.

MY OPINION

CRIKEY! BINDI’S 21

WINNING THE LIFE LOTTERY

Like millions around the world, Sami Muirhead is moved by the achievements of the incredible Irwin family, as she celebrates Bindi’s birthday.

Richard O’Leary deliberates what it truly means to win the lottery and how joy can be found in unexpected places.

B

est part of my week? Going to Australia Zoo to celebrate Bindi Irwin turning 21 years old. I do not know Bindi, but I am not alone in saying I feel so incredibly proud of her. We all felt our hearts shatter when a tiny Bindi and Robert Irwin lost their dad 13 years ago. They were only eight and two years old respectively when Steve was stung in his chest by a barb from a stingray. I will never forget that day. I was on air and our entire show turned into a tribute to the great Irwins, as tens of thousands of Coasties grieved together and flocked to Australia Zoo. None of us could believe the news. The world lost an icon and a hero, but Bindi lost a dad and a role model. Can you imagine being tucked into bed at night by Steve Irwin? How fun he must have been as a dad. I will never forget how Steve’s face used to light up at press conferences whenever his little girl was mentioned. I went to the media scrum the day this enthusiastic dad announced the birth of Bindi. Steve and Terri named their precious baby after their favourite crocodile (Bindi) and dog (Sue). It set a course for a unique life. Bindi is now world-famous and has recorded multiple TV shows; is an accomplished singer and dancer; an advocate for animal and land rights; and clearly a smart businesswoman with amazing life goals. I will be forever grateful for the Irwins’

influence over my kids. They are such wonderful role models in a world filled with cardboard Kardashians. Thanks to Bindi and her brother, my kids love animals and are walking encyclopaedias on the subject of lemurs and red pandas. Bindi posted on her Facebook page about coming of age: “In my life I’ve learned the value of kindness and respect. As a young woman in this social mediadriven world, I’ve found that it’s of utmost importance to be uplifting and encouraging. Stand up for what you believe

“I will be forever grateful for the Irwins’ influence over my kids” in and let your light SHINE.” My kids have run into the Irwins at the zoo a few times. Bindi has always dropped to her knees and called my little ones “love” and “sweetie”. Robert, too, has gone out of his way to talk to his little fans when he could have easily slipped away from the strangers for peace and quiet. They are both such well-rounded and high-achieving, humble human beings. I hope you are having a quiet toast of bubbles yourself Terri, because you have done a bloody marvellous job of raising those kids.

O

h how I remember the days when my life was all about wine, women and song. Alas, no longer. These days it’s more like soy flat white, myself, and reading. Not that I’m complaining. I’m more content than I’ve ever been. The realisation of how much my life has changed came as I painted the ceiling of the verandah by myself, listening to the podcast The History of Rome, while my boys entertained themselves inside. My hands were covered in paint, my shoulders ached from reaching above my head, but I was happy. As I continued to slap the paint between the masking tape borders, my mind wandered to all the talk about winning Lotto – one of the prizes had jumped to $110 million. My parents had bought a couple of tickets and had already divvied up their winnings (I did quite well, thank you very much). But what would I do if I won? I’d pay the mortgages for myself and my brothers. Give my parents a blank cheque, knowing it wouldn’t pay for everything they’ve given me. A college fund for my kids and then some. Of course, I’d start the obligatory charity – although I convinced myself I

would give my time as well as my money. I’d buy a bookshop – just so I could wander in and take any title I wanted. One-hundred acres in the hinterland. A few horses. And I’d rescue a couple of sheep and cows each year to partially offset all those lamb chops and roasts I had eaten until recently. Tuition fees would be set aside so I could do any university subject – just for the heck of it. No thought of getting another degree. Of course I’d continue to work – just to keep me honest. Kidding! A couple of million in the bank for travel and that would just about do me. Probably $5 million – $10 million tops – I’m not a greedy man. The reality is I would change very little, as boring as that sounds. I would pay my debts and put aside cash for my bills and I could stop stressing about my financial future. But I would still live on the Sunshine Coast. My kids would go to the same school. I would hang around my same friends. And one of the most enjoyable things in the world would still be painting a ceiling by myself while listening to a podcast as my boys played inside. So really, I have already won the lottery. Although, maybe I could splurge on a couple of decent paint brushes – these ones keep going outside the lines.

time WHAT A MAN Mason Hope’s music doesn’t just entertain; it’s also a vehicle for him to heal and help other young men. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

M

ason Hope’s passion for boosting the mental health of young men comes to the fore with his latest EP, with the first single set to drop on July 26. The extremely talented Sunshine Coast musician will release The River ahead of an epic launch of his five-track EP, Running Falling Floating, at the Gympie Music Muster on August 23. Mr Hope says his latest record has ticked a number of items off his bucket list, including the chance to record with ARIA award-winner Shane Nicholson at his home studio on the coast of New South Wales. The pair first met when then 17-year-old Mr Hope won the Trans Tasman Entertainer of the Year title in 2017. Mr Nicholson was one of the event’s judges. Mr Hope began writing songs for the EP at the start of the year and says a week with

Mr Nicholson was all it took to breathe a whole new vibe into his lyrics. “He knew how to get the best out of me and we worked well together. Having him as a mentor was really cool and I definitely got a lot more out of it than just some amazing songs, Mr Hope says. “This EP is different to anything I have put out before, but it’s still authentically me. Shane’s one of the most genius music producers I’ve ever seen and these songs capture the style of music that I really want to continue releasing. It is the EP I am the most proud of. “All of the songs on this record have flowed straight out of me and onto paper; they all speak to me on a very deep and emotional level. The first single, The River, is about Mr Hope’s childhood and he shares the feelings of abandonment he experienced despite his

loving grandmother taking him in to raise him at age age of one. Mr Hope says Let It Go, which features Allison Forbes and is about mental health, was the quickest song he has ever written. “When I was younger, I went through my share of traumatic experiences and then endured severe bullying throughout high school. I was encouraged to join a youth engagement committee, which ended up creating Headspace in Maroochydore. “I found that I was therapeutically helping myself by helping others. I became the Headspace national youth ambassador and a member of the national youth reference group and I have learned a lot about how to keep a balance in life and maintain a healthy mental health space. “We should be able to speak up and talk about emotions, having a voice when you are not okay and being empowered to seek help. I want to be part of getting rid of that stigma at a younger age for men. A Sunshine Coast Council RADF Grant helped to make Mr Hope’s EP possible. To be among the first to hear Mr Hope’s new work and for information on how to pre-order the new EP, visit masonhope.com.au.

Have you heard about the new ‘chocolate tea’ craze? It’s the latest trend that has people going wild for cocoa husk tea. While cocoa bean husks have been used for centuries by people across South America and other parts of the world to make delicious chocolate-tasting tea without the calories, we are only just cottoning on to this in Australia. The Husk Mill produces and sells a range of cocao husk teas through its website and stockists, and offers signature blends like Vanilla Cacao, which tastes like a Dutch hot chocolate, Cacao Rose Tea, which tastes like Turkish delight, and Cacao Coconut, which tastes like a lamington.

Lightning flashes of inspiration could strike on Monday or Tuesday – but make sure you communicate clearly or there’ll be chaos along the way. Friday onwards is a fabulous time to initiate a pet project or refresh your physical appearance.

On Monday and Tuesday, avoid using words as weapons – or making promises that you later regret. The new moon lights up your solitude zone and Mercury moves forwards in your hopes and wishes zone, so it’s time to recharge your batteries.

This week, conversations will be confusing as retrograde Mercury muddles your mind, which could result in the tendency to send and/or receive mixed messages. Uranus also stirs up waves of discontent within a romance, friendship or group dynamic.

Avoid being a stubborn and intractable Scorpio. Uranus rocks the relationship boat, so listen to what a loved one is trying to tell you. The new moon encourages you to be more independent, creative and adventurous – especially at work.

Hasty hubris could land you in hot water on Monday or Tuesday, so think things through before you speak and act. Thursday onwards looks fabulous for travel and foreign connections as the new moon activates your adventure zone and Mercury turns direct.

The new moon stimulates your intrigue zone, so no secret is safe. With Mercury retrograde, you could stir up issues from your own less-than-perfect past. Lust and loot loom large as you work through issues involving trust and intimacy.

One half of you wants you snuggle up close with someone special, while the other half longs to be footloose, fancy-free and rebelliously independent. You’re also likely to say something totally inappropriate (especially on Monday or Tuesday).

New moon week is the ideal time to ditch bad daily habits and start afresh. Work, health, fitness and food choices are the main areas where you need to make some long overdue changes and adjustments – the sooner the better.

You’ve been talking about saving for something big for a long time now. This week, with Venus, Mars and the new moon firing up your finance zone, resist the urge to be flash with cash. Instead, put your money where your mouth is and actually start saving.

Monday and Tuesday look rather shambolic, as the sun/Uranus square disrupts your daily routine. Plus, with Mercury retrograde, your need for speed is seriously curtailed. Creative projects, exciting hobbies and sporting activities are favoured.

THE REAL COST OF A FIRST HOME

There are many factors that affect housing affordability, according to the property experts. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

T

he Housing Industry Association has released a report declaring housing affordability is the best it’s been since 1999, but according to a Sunshine Coast property expert, there are many more factors to take into account than average wages, dwelling prices and interest rates when calculating affordability. Released last week, the HIA’s Affordability Index took a macro look at eight capital cities and regional areas around the country. HIA senior economist Geordan Murray says for a home buyer with an average income purchasing a median-priced dwelling (assuming a 10 per cent deposit), mortgage repayments would consume the smallest proportion of their earnings since 1999. “The main reason the HIA Affordability Index today is comparable with the level in 1999, despite house prices rising significantly faster than incomes, is that interest rates are 4.6 per cent today compared with 6.7 per cent in 1999,” he says. “Average earnings have increased by 113 per cent over the 20 years to 2019, while the median home price has increased by 228 per cent, but the lower interest rates have kept the cost of servicing a loan the same. “There are also a number of initiatives

Mal Cayley from Investor Property that do not feed into this Affordability Index that will assist with first-home buyers entering the market. The reduction in income tax, the easing of APRA restrictions on mortgage lending and the Australian Government’s First Home Loan Deposit Scheme are likely to be important considerations for households.” The report shows that in all eight capital cities there was an improvement in the affordability index over the quarter to

June 2019, with Brisbane recording an increase of 2.6 per cent. Investor Property managing director Mal Cayley says while this is a positive sentiment, it is a “macro statement” and those looking at affordability on the Sunshine Coast need to drill down and focus on the local market. “When considering affordability, accommodation is just one factor, so for example when you look at Logan, which is the cheapest on the Affordability Index, things like travelling to work and accessing lifestyle activities like the beach, are going to cost you a lot more in fuel and travel time,” he says. “It can often work out cheaper to have less disposable income in an area that has a higher accommodation cost because everything else becomes more affordable and accessible. It is about the lifestyle you want to live and this is why Sunshine Coast property continues to see a high demand.” Mr Cayley uses Aura as an example. It offers a range of property price points and if you live in Baringa, you are within walking distance of a range of facilities including shops and schools to future large-format retail and industrial complexes. “The rents are steady and will only

increase with time because people want to live there, but they get easy access to everything else,” he says. “Affordability is such a complex issue and Australia is so large and diverse that trying to simplify it isn’t beneficial. “When you look at what’s happening here, the pent-up demand is still there and we are now starting to see more activity in the market. Enquiry and energy is back. “There have always been plenty of people around, but until recently they didn’t have the energy [to act] because they didn’t have the confidence. Now, their confidence is returning.”

FIVE FAST FACTS • The HIA Affordability Index today is comparable with the level in 1999. • Average earnings have increased by 113 per cent over the 20 years to 2019. • The median home price has increased by 228 per cent. • Interest rates are 4.6 per cent today compared with 6.7 per cent in 1999. • Enquiry and energy is back in the Sunshine Coast property market.

CONSTRUCTION UNDERWAY ON LUXURIOUS BEACH LIFE ALEX APARTMENTS

L

ast week construction company McNab, along with developer Cube Developments, launched the start of construction at one of the Sunshine Coast’s most anticipated luxury developments, Beach Life Alex, with residents expected to move in by late 2020. McNab construction manager Carl Nancarrow says starting work on the iconic development is good news for local trades and subcontractors, given McNab’s commitment to supporting local on all their construction sites. “We expect to have up to 200 staff and subcontractors onsite at peak times so the site will be a hive of activity over the coming months as Beach Life Alex comes out of the ground,” Mr Nancarrow says. “We are delighted to work with Cube Developments to make these luxurious apartments a reality and having the team onsite to officially get work underway is a great milestone after completing our final design phase. “On average we achieve around 95 per cent of local trades on our projects, so a development of this calibre will see an impressive injection into the local economy

Craig Morrison, Scott Juniper (Cube Developments), John Connolly (councillor), Andrew Stevens (Project Urban) and Carl Nancarrow (construction manager at McNab) and a boost for our construction industry. We have great talent here on the Coast and have enjoyed developing excellent partnerships with the best in the business since opening our doors on the Sunshine Coast in 2017. “I am confident this development will raise the bar for apartment living on the Sunshine Coast being one of the few remaining sites offering uninterrupted, never-to-be-built-out views of the ocean in

the popular Alexandra Headland precinct.” Developer Scott Juniper from Cube Developments says Beach Life Alex has been well received by the market with more than 60 per cent of the 57 high-end apartments sold, and strong enquiry levels for the remaining apartments. “The combination of uninterrupted ocean views to the east and lake views to the west means all apartments have their own appeal,” he says.

ELEVATING TO NEW HEIGHTS

I

t’s all systems go at one of the Sunshine Coast’s most anticipated boutique developments with construction well underway at Elevate on Buderim, located just a stone’s throw from the town’s popular high street precinct. Those who have already bought one of the seven luxury apartments in HMR Project’s $7.5 million development can look forward to celebrating Christmas in their new homes thanks to builders Devcon Building Co. being ahead of schedule. HMR projects director Ken Reed says he is delighted with the progress despite the weather being unseasonably wet in the month of June. “Devcon has done an exceptional job of staying on track, despite some challenging conditions, and we are really starting to see the vision for Elevate on Buderim become a reality,” he says. “We wanted to combine urban sophistication with the village appeal of Buderim and we have worked hard to choose construction materials and methodologies that complement the Buderim streetscape and community plan. “The iconic lebbeck tree which overlooks the site was carefully integrated into the design of the building providing

dappled shade for the ground-floor restaurant deck. “We continue to work closely with environment officers from Sunshine Coast Council to ensure we protect this beautiful part of Buderim’s heritage.” Four apartments were snapped up soon after the project came to market with only one of the two expansive penthouses remaining and two three-bedroom, two-bathroom apartments. “Now that construction is progressing well we have a new wave of interest from

those who were waiting to see the development come to fruition, so we expect the remaining apartments will sell prior to completion.” Managing director of Devcon Building Co. Michael Kain says all is on track to meet the pre-Christmas completion date with the second level slab being poured in early August, following completion of block work to the first level. “Our amazing team of staff and quality local subcontractors are making great progress and with 35 to 40 workers onsite

at peak times, the site is a hive of activity,”he says. “Boutique projects such as Elevate on Buderim provide a significant boost to the local economy given the high-end finishes and quality of workmanship required to deliver to the specifications. “We’re committed to using trades from the local area to retain that economic impact here on the Coast ensuring the spend goes straight back to local businesses and service providers.” Elevate on Buderim offers light-filled living and entertainment areas with modern, luxurious finishes such as northern beech timber flooring, Miele appliances and impressive stone benchtops throughout. GLOBAL HOTEL OPERATOR STAKES CLAIM IN MAROOCHYDORE CBD

T

he Maroochydore City Centre has been selected as the location for a new international four-star business hotel on the Sunshine Coast in a strong vote of confidence for the emerging CBD. Leading Australian hotel investment and development company Pro-invest has confirmed it will develop and operate a

nine-storey Holiday Inn Express & Suites hotel in the heart of the new Maroochydore CBD. SunCentral Maroochydore chief executive officer John Knaggs says the opening of the new Holiday Inn Express & Suites next year will coincide with the launch of the Sunshine Coast Airport’s new international runway in 2020.

“The hotel opening will also align with the new international subsea broadband cable, which will provide the fastest data and telecommunications connection to Asia from the east coast of Australia from next year,” Mr Knaggs adds. “It is a testament to the growth and investment in this region that a leading firm like Pro-invest has identified the commercial opportunities on offer in the new Maroochydore CBD. “The Sunshine Coast is already the second fastest growing local government area in Queensland after Ipswich – ahead of the Gold Coast – and commercial commitments like this will ensure the region continues to thrive.” Mr Knaggs says Pro-invest has made an astute investment from a brand and visibility point of view, locating the hotel at the gateway to the city centre so it would be one of the first buildings visitors to the CBD would see. Pro-invest has applied to Economic Development Queensland for a 167-room business hotel, which would be on a prime 2535-square metre site on First Avenue and close to the proposed future light rail network. In addition to accommodation, the hotel will also have 183 square metres of retail space on the ground level and a rooftop recreation area with a swimming pool and gym. The hotel will also have a bar, meeting and function rooms as well as 54 car parking spaces concealed from the street by vertical landscaping. For more information go to maroochydore-city.com.au.

FINAL WORD Hotel development company Pro-invest is building a nine-storey hotel in the new CBD.

CBD IS TAKING SHAPE Construction started this week on the first building in the new Maroochydore CBD with developer Evans Long turning the first sod on its eight-level commercial and retail building. The $30 million energy-efficient building, Foundation Place, is being built on a site on South Sea Islander Way, directly across the park from the proposed new city hall. Evans Long director Dirk Long says more than 40 per cent of Foundation Place has already been leased. Mr Long says in addition to basing Evans Long’s own head office in the building, other

“More than 40 per cent of Foundation Place has already been leased” tenants include a local construction company that had taken 350 square metres, a law firm with 250 square metres, a town planning company with 138 square metres and a financial planning firm with 70 square metres. “We have had strong interest from a range of potential tenants who want to be part of the new, vibrant CBD,” he adds. Mr Long says modern businesses consider eco-friendly features ‘must haves’ to attract and retain the right staff but also reduce their footprint in the region.

SURF REPORT

with MWP’s man in the water

So recently a friend was in waist-deep water walking out at the pass in Byron in 1.5-foot slop. Unexpectedly, the person in front threw his board away without checking who may be behind him. The result? Twenty stitches to the head. So always check behind you and maintain control. Use your spider senses! Okay, J-Bay done and sadly Medina won. The worst part of that is Ryan Callinan had him on toast with three minutes to go when he had a brain fart and gave him two sets of waves that he had priority for. To quote Homer Simpson: DOH! Conditions are beautiful so enjoy what you can.
