BEST FOR BEDROOMS

Celebrated Australian designer and Carpet Court ambassador Darren Palmer shares his favourite shutters and flooring combinations.

Bedrooms are arguably the most personal rooms in your home. More than the living and dining area, bedrooms are spaces just for us, private rooms – not public, so it’s important that they look and feel exactly the way that we want them to, especially when it comes to key interior elements such as the flooring and shutters.

Shutters play an important role in the bedroom. They shield you from the morning light and provide privacy throughout the day and into the evening. As for the floor – whether you opt for carpet or hard flooring – it plays a big role in determining the look and feel within the space.

If you’re renovating your bedroom and can’t quite work out what flooring and shutter combination you’re wanting to choose, here are my three favourite options that will work in any bedroom. Roller blinds with dark timber flooring In a bedroom with dark flooring, you want to have as much access to and control over natural sunlight as possible to help brighten the space. By having Carpet Court’s Austere Light Filter blinds in your bedroom, you can easily control how much light enters the space, making it the perfect option for a room with dark, timber flooring.

If you were to have heavy drapes or complete block-out blinds, you would tick the boxes in terms of privacy, however there would be little room for light to make its way in and you’d be relying on artificial light sources to brighten the space – they can only do so much.

If you’re looking to renovate or upgrade your bedroom, consider how flooring and blinds work together to really enhance and lift a space.

Veri Shades with plush carpet My favourite blind selection has got to be a gentle, flowing and drape-like shade that drift s eff ortlessly in the breeze. Veri Shades are the perfect solution to creating a space with soft elements and décor. Veri Shades have the functional versatility of a vertical blind, but with the beautiful, linear soft ness of an undulating sheer drape – providing daytime privacy, as well as night.

While they look extremely elegant with hard flooring, combining Veri Shades with a plush carpet creates a sense of luxury and comfort. This is ideal for any bedroom. Plantation shutters with light timber flooring Inspired and influenced heavily by the grand beach houses of East Hampton in Upstate New York, the Hamptons style is about a fresh and traditional approach to beachside living. If you’re creating a Hamptons look within your home, consider the typical elements such as bleached timber floors and white, fresh shutters.

Installing indoor plantation shutters is one of the easiest ways to achieve the Hamptons look, and when you accompany them with a flooring option such as Carpet Court’s Precinct Oak in the colourway Amalfi or Loire (pictured), the job is done.
