Diamonds are precious stones and sometimes cost a fortune. While some are lucky enough to possess diamonds or friends who gift such expensive stuff, others might have to do with artificial stones. There are some parameters that can really tell if a diamond is fake or real, but with the increasing quality of artificial stones, it takes only an expert to identify which one is the real one and which one is the fake. A real one has its own sparkle, cut and clarity that set it apart from a fake one. Diamond jewelers often look minutely at every stone to tell whether it is a fake or real stone and since this could make a huge difference of cost, as much as thousands of dollars they need to be extra careful while looking at the characteristics of the stone who authenticity they are going to determine. The trickiest bit is when the diamonds are very small and hence present a greater challenge. Although similar in color and glaze, you can find out if a stone is a fake or real diamond by using a diamond tester which can be trusted except in cases of moissanite. There are many other parameters to know whether a stone is fake or real and experienced jewelers use a combination of the tests to determine the authenticity. For example, heating the stone for 30 seconds will tell you if it's a real diamond because real ones do not get heated up. They disperse the heat immediately. Sending ultra violet light is also a good method to know if it is a fake or real diamond as real ones give out a blue fluorescent light. Both these tests are not exhaustive and hence should be used in combination with other tests. If you want to tell if a stone is a fake or real one you could look through it. A real diamond, with its high refractive index, sparkles much more than a fake one. Also if you look through a real diamond at a newspaper, you wouldn't be able to see the letters not can you see the bottom in case it is mounted. Another important thing is that artificially made stones are perfect. This is why if a stone doesn't seem to have any imperfections, chances are that it is a fake one as a real diamond generally tends to have some inclusions. Cubic zirconia and other artificial diamonds are heavy too compared to the read one.
